To read contemporary American fiction is to swim through a sea of fatphobia so normalized that it is almost never remarked upon in book reviews, and those who perpetuate it are awarded the National Book Award or become national bestsellers. When I encounter these fatphobic moments, I’m forced to make a choice: Will whatever insight into being human this novel might offer be worth the damage? Often, I’m interested in the writer’s larger vision but their casual dismissal of the bodies of the majority of Americans creates a jarring effect. Fiction at its best shows genuine interest and curiosity about every aspect of what it is to be human; cruel remarks about fatness diminish the humanity of characters and diminish the book.

Libraries are cool! Anyone want to hear about the books I have on hold at the library right now? Just kidding, you don't have a choice.

The Ballad of Jacquotte Delahaye by Briony Cameron. Adult historical fiction about a Haitian-French, queer woman who becomes a pirate in the 17th-century Caribbean. As a Black Sails fan, I have high hopes for this one.

The Tower by Flora Carr. Adult historical fiction novel about the imprisonment of Mary, Queen of Scots, prior to her execution–supposed to be very character-driven and claustrophobic, also queer I think?

Experienced by Kate Young. Adult romantic comedy about a newly-out lesbian in her thirties whose first serious girlfriend tells her she should go out and explore the queer dating scene she missed out on in her twenties; I've heard it's both funny and heartfelt.

Here For the Wrong Reasons by Annabel Paulsen and Lydia Wang: Adult romantic comedy about two women on a Bachelor-type dating show for fall for each other instead of the male star. I don't watch dating shows, but this is a great premise for a rom com.

A Little Kissing Between Friends by Chencia C. Higgins. Black sapphic romance about a music producer and a dancer at a strip club. I like queer friends-to-lovers and the cover for this is cute (fat Black masc lesbian on the cover, also!)

How You Get the Girl by Anita Kelly. I have grown to love Anita Kelly this year so I'm excited to read their F/F romance! There's basketball and a sort of fake-dating/relationship lessons scheme between the leads.

Housemates by Emma Copley Eisenberg. Adult lit fic about two queer roommates and artists from Philadelphia who go on a roadtrip to photograph rural Pennsylvania. Reviews promise messy yet loveable characters and an exploration of the power of art.

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley. Adult science fiction novel about a British civil servant offered a job to monitor people plucked from history and brought to the modern times to see how they adjust to the present–specifically Arctic explorer Graham Gore. And falls in love with him? This is a really wild premise for a book but I've seen some very positive reviews and apparently the novel has an interesting exploration of history and colonialism, so I've decided to give it a whirl.

The Hundred Years' War on Palestine by Rashid Khalidi. Nonfiction about Palestinian history.

book diary moment because i read all evening. finished housemates by emma copley eisenberg - entertaining but not sure yet if i think it’s any more than that. read all of brutes by dizz tate which sort of disappointed me. i expected to like it a lot more than i did even though i think it may actually have been better written than i expected. but could grow on me? finally finally started molly by blake butler. well actually, i started it at a time i really should not have started it and stopped and finally tried it again. got about halfway through and i do get why it’s been a bit of a darling. i feel like i have no idea how it’s sitting with me so far much less how i’ll feel as i keep going with it. but i just think it will stay in there

Fantastic article I just ran across by queer author Emma Copley Eisenberg. As someone who often feels queer "in the wrong way" this really hit and I'm sure some of my followers might appreciate it as well.

"On its face, the idea of following the rules of being a “good queer” seems low stakes, but for many people, fictional and real, it can mean the difference between having and not having social support. The dynamic of queer people correcting and policing each other’s queer virtuousness has become a common interaction in American queer television, from The Bisexual to The L Word Generation Q to Dear White People to Work in Progress to Vida. But in the past two years, books—specifically literary fiction—have become the place where queer people seem the most exhausted by this morality, as well as where we’re having the most fun pushing back on it."

"In Vanessa Williams’s 2024 novel Ellipses, the main character is Lily, a bisexual, mixed-race woman with “long, dark hair and a folksy sweater” who works in the fashion industry. As she sits in a lesbian bar, she is confronted by another patron, not femme, who implies that Lily is straight and doesn’t belong in a queer space. Lily leaves, thinking, “Better the actual cold than the icicles of intragroup rejection.” Williams continues, “But Lily’s conventional femininity was not a falsehood that she had slipped on as a disguise to protect herself from bigotry. It was as much a part of who she was as her attraction to women; to dispose of it would have meant rejecting part of her identity, something she refused to do.”

These characters, then, seem to feel that acceptance within the queer community comes at the cost of their individuality and authenticity."
