Sure. Basically during the Gerry episode when he said that there are no entities of hope I thought “ok but what if there was though?”

But then I remembered: if too much fear is a bad thing, then so is too much joy. Ofc both emotions are fine within reason, they’re perfectly human in fact. But when you take them too far it gets destructive.

So I essentially just took basic human desires and cranked them up to 100. So instead of spreading true joy, the avatars generate negative feelings instead. But since the entities are stupid and don’t know how humans work they think those are the same thing.

And yes all the bad things in tma still happen, just in different ways.

But honestly I made this au bc I like designing characters.

TMAGP Theory

idk if someone has said this yet, but I’ve got a theory that the entities of TMAGP are the seven deadly sins/something similar. Most of the cases have a main one from what I can tell, here’s how I’ve sorted some of them mentally:

A lot of these I’m p iffy on, so few free to let me know what you think!

If I’m right abt this in any sort of way, we should be getting like a season arc primarily involving wrath and have a general arc relating to greed (akin to how in TMA, the Eye was always an underlying theme until the last season). I’m relating the Magnus Institute to greed in this instance b/c not only is Jonah Magnus a slut for information, it also fits with the focus on alchemy that’s present in this universe. I’m not sure if the writers would do this exact category dealio, but something I’m pretty sure on is that TMAGP is less about fear and more about shame or social faux pas (ie: Sam’s statement in 28. While ofc his situation is terrifying, the emotion that gets underscored is his shame, or the episode with the magic dice that can fuck up other people’s futures, yeah that’s a terrifying power to wield, but it seemed like the speaker felt more guilty than scared)

i was connected to the rot before hand but it ironically wasnt really until connecting to pre shit show ykw that i rly got the connection to the cycle

the way i worship the rot is also not based in fear necessarily - tho fear for me is the same emotion as hope

there’s a user ive been following for a while since i got into tma in 2018 who wrote very detailed meta about each episode, complete with a fairly thorough analysis of the emotional beats and what they thought made those beats work ; i remember secretly thinking that if i were a showrunner, this kind of insight would be really valuable even just for vibes references, so i was pretty heartbroken when they stopped posting those sometime during s4. iirc they cited burnout since s4 was on a pretty dark stretch at the time. i never even got to hear their thoughts on jmart happening. they’re still around, still posting, and i still follow them! they just don’t post any tma any more, and i fully understand and support them, just a bit sad abt it

also also. the text to speeches got less robot sounding the longer they were reading and it really reminded me of how ppl reading statements would slowly get invested as they were reading and emote as if it were happening to them.

magnus institute is in a different place which is interesting. if it was built for the same reasons (outside of just research) is there another panopticon esque structure underneath? (brings us back to if smirke was doing his thing)

i think i'm pretty good at understanding a character's POV, especially in regards to trauma/high emotion, even when i haven't experienced anything similar before. i know this to be a necessary skill that most writers have, but i do think i'm good at it.

im thinking about getting into the magnus archives, so i was wondering if you could give like. idk what i should expect from it/a synopsis? /not forced

SO

the magnus archives is a fiction horror podcast written by jonny sims, about the Archivist, jonathan sims. no they are not supposed to be the same person, jonny is just shit at character naming. there's like 4 michaels alone (michael shelley / michael distortion / mikaele / mike). btw if i say "jonny" i am refering to the writer, if i say jon/jonathan i am refering to the character

so, Jon works for the Magnus Institute, London, an institution dedicated to documenting and investigating paranormal experiences. he used to work in the research department, but after the passing of the former Head Archivist (Gertrude), he found himself suddenly promoted to the archivist job. Now, he reads people's written "statements" (supernatural) so they have audio versions.

each episode contains one statement + jon's thoughts on it at the end. in this way, it is an anthology horror series; each episode has a sort of "monster of the week" that is its own disconnected and fully-fledged horror story. BUT!!! BUT!!! it is,,, connected. there is a Grander Plot. as it goes on, connections start to be made between the statements, with several developing plotlines and b-plots, and supernatural happenings even start to go on in the institute itself. it is REALLY thought out; my relisten has me finding tiny connected details in almost every episode.

TMA has to be listened to in order, from episode 1-200; i say that because i was told it doesn't and almost started with ep 187 (every day i mentally thank the person who told me NO NO START WITH #1 AND GO IN ORDER. every day). additionally, each episode, or "MAG", is about 20 minutes long, and TMA is split into five 40-episode seasons.

some various stuff: it's queer! jon is ace & bi and its not a big deal bc, you know, he's busy with The Horrors. several other characters are queer as well. speaking of characters, they're great; you get quite attached to both the main ones (Jon, Martin, Tim, Melanie, etc) and several side ones (Sasha, Gerry, Michael, Helen, etc).

a note: the TMA creators care a lot about being respectful to marginalized groups and when handling careful topics, but they fucked up sometimes. in particular, early "spiral statements" (stories abt lies, confusion, and the human mind) sometimes lean into the "ooh scary hallucinations" thing in season 1. as it goes on, it does get better (changing the focus to things such as "it's horrifying not to be believed about your struggle with mental illness"), but it is worth warning about, imo. (There's about... 2? i can think of? that specifically give me pause.)

a second note: TMA is very much horror, if it wasn't already obvious. It deals with things like cannibalism, insect infestation, heavy isolation, skinning, body horror, police brutality, spiders, paranoia, being watched/spied on/Known, etc. It is also a tragedy. With those two things in mind, please remember to take care of yourself, first and foremost, and take breaks/stop if you need to.

tma is really really really good, surprisingly emotional, full of creative horror and compelling stories, and has some AWESOME themes and storylines centering around monstrocity, what it means to be human, abuse of power, and what you can do in a system that fundamentally just wants to hurt you, and i 100% recommend it if you want to try it out!!

fool me, fool me - andro(slur im not comfortable typing LOL) : every single time i read this fic i cry it's so funny and sweet and ive read it 4 times and tis perfect and amazing and and and (EXPLODES INTO A FINELY CRUSHED DUST, SCATTERING UPON THE EARTH AND PROVIDING THEM WITH WONDERFUL NUTRIENTS) so like read it. ok? ive got his number from the great beyond - verbosedescription : basically the same as above except less on the funny more on the oh my fucking god. oh my god. oh my god. ue, ue, ue. ive read it 3 times bailey school kids - verbosedescription : this fic genuinely hurts me to read because it makes me so emotional i cried so hard i couldnt see at the end of this once. ive read it 5 times he stands in front of the mirror with a net, hoping to catch something - blackwood (transjon) : this fic is utterly heartbreaking. its so well written. it makes me fucking crazy. why'd it have to be a bin. it didnt have to be a bin! fuck! god! auhhhh!!!!

i'm going to be so serious i literally have so little gerry standalone fics because they are never well written. i've tried so much they're all bad. theres one where he fucking converts to christianity i am SO fucking serious rn. i read the whole thing because i was intensely curious and it ended with him going to a fucking church in america it was literally INSANE i HATED IT. maybe one day ill trudge through his tag, but. its also just full of him making a one-off appearance and never being a meaningful character so it doesn't feel worthwhile, really? meaningless standard trite that contains just the most bland takes and writing styles ever. also porn. and i dont. read that so... i have a lot more recommendations but they're all in that document or in the mentioned author's works! dm me whenever ill literally always wanna talk about gerry he specifically has been my special interest for... two years...

As a person who is terrorised every day by the crawling rot and has had more than one unfortunate experience with parasites, to the point where I cannot even sit in the grass without a voice in my brain telling me that I'll get ticks and I cannot touch anything outside without washing my hands four times afterwards, I'd say that probably The Corruption is what I deserve. It's not a coincidence that so many of my favourite episodes are Corruption related and that Jane Prentiss' statement is probably the strongest one of all, that shit shook me to the core. I understand it in a way that I wish I didn't and I think if I was her that would probably happen to me too. Also im obsessed with the relationship between the Corruption and Love, it's my favourite piece of symbolism in the series.

However, if we talk about what calls me instead, I'd go with the Hunt. I mean I'd say yes immediately, there is nothing I desire more than become a beast, I think about it on a daily basis. Though it's probably the transgenderism speaking lmao. Also First Hunt is my favourite episode ever and im absolutely in love with Daisy, I think I rarely experienced such a strong emotion as when I listened for the first time to her turning into a beast on record. I wish that were me ahahah

Also my unfortunate end would probably be very boring or sudden or silly. Like I'd just straight up not pay attention or go into the wrong direction or talk to the wrong person or I'd probably get pushed into a ritual by Gertrude because I trust too much. Though If I had to choose, I also want to be eaten by that fire flower person like it happened to Sarah Carpenter
