So, König brings his Engel lots of flowers of course! They’re the first thing she sees on the table when she wakes up. They come straight back home after her birthday dinner – König also takes her out to eat because our man can't cook for the life of him, he can make scrambled eggs and knows how to boil water but that’s about it – and Engel has to wait for almost half an hour as König prepares her gift... But when she's finally guided to the bathroom and König tells her to open her eyes, there's the cutest scene waiting for her: there's candles everywhere, a hot bath drawn for her (and him lol), he has even sprinkled flowers there in the bath 🌸

There’s far too much water for two people however, and they make a mess as they climb in. Some of the candles go out as the water spills all over the floor, but they both quickly decide it's even more romantic when there's less lighting. König pulls Engel against his chest and tells her he will never let her go, that she's the best thing that's ever happened to him (yes he thinks it's a necessity that he makes his birthday girl cry from joy) And of course his hands wander a bit...!

He's never been this soft with her, proceeding to whisper more sweet things in her ear as he gives her the first peak with his fingers only, holding her close with one arm tightly wrapped around her middle. Perhaps it's the warmth of the water or the magic of those flowers, perhaps it's just the sight and feel of his angel right there where she's supposed to be – secure and safe in his arms – but König has never been so incredibly gentle 🩷

🍕 - What is their favorite food?

This is a super easy question if we're talking everything that's edible. it's cake. he loves the kind of pastries that are covered in sprinkles and frosting and wafers and whatever the fuck else to a degree that makes food critics extremely upset and mad because you can't even tell what that's supposed to be anymore. But also there's like a billion different types of cake, and they are ALL good.

If we're talking REAL food (in peppermint's words REAL FOOD RIGHT NOW) it's a harder question because his eating habits are really odd. or unusual. He grew up eating mostly candy and STILL eats mostly candy (and other sweet things), he can't really cook, and he doesn't really like to cook because he rarely has an appetite for anything that's Not sweet. He's the kind of person who has NOTHING in the fridge except like, eggs, and who-knows-how-old preserves of stuff that CAN be used for cooking but he's not using them and will never be using them, and then there's just a whole cake in there. He gets DenDash 90% of the time when he's actually trying to put in the effort to eat something that actually IS in an octopus' natural diet, and in that case he tends to prefer things that are easy to eat, and generally considered snack food, and STILL socially acceptable to dip in chocolate sauce. So generally something like shrimp tempura. yeah, let's say shrimp tempura

🍀 - What originally inspired the OC?

This is a trip down the memory lane... i have no idea honestly. I have to assume he's one of those "random OCs" I made at some point, which is a thing I like doing where I just make an OC and then see if it goes anywhere. He's a pretty early OC, so it's likely a situation where I was just looking up different cephalopod species, or maybe gearsets that look fun, and making something out of that. He was originally based off the angel octopus which is where his name comes from! (it doesn't make much sense nowadays but eh.)

💀 - Does your OC have any phobias?

Oh does he. yeah. Engel has claustrophobia so severe that it very much dictates his life, which he also finds extremely frustrating but hard to find workarounds for. It developed for him sometime in his early adulthood, which is generally when his mental health took a nosedive as a whole, and it's severe enough to limit his life A LOT. He gets anxious being in rooms with no windows, to the point that indoor gigs are pretty much out of the question with a lot of clubs being dank cellars with no windows ANYWHERE, which would just be a death sentence for him. He gets anxiety with closed doors and closed windows; he usually tries to position himself next to windows indoors, and if that's not an option he needs to stay VERY busy to keep his brain in the right place. Trains and buses are not an option to him, which pretty much locks him out of public transit as a whole, and the only workaround he's found for not having panic attacks in a car is perpetually sticking at least half his arm out of the open window (obviously he cannot drive). And that's cars that are being driven by people he deems as safety pillars to begin with, and cars that are big enough so that he can fit in them at least a little comfortably (something that has really just gotten worse recently).

Needless to say he finds it extremely frustrating. Being locked out of like, the entirety of public transport AND the possibility of just taking a taxi AND the inability to keep calm enough in a car to ever drive one very much spirals into a situation where he can't really go anywhere. There's not a whole lot of other options other than WALK, or he has to be babysat by a friend (usually Peppermint) the whole time, because few other people can drive him places and actually stay on top of how he's feeling. Generally, as long as he can see the sky, he's doing pretty alright, but there are MANY situations in life where you DON'T see the sky.

He also feels bad because not being able to go underground or fully indoors also means that Deep Sea Dead Zone often can't do indoor gigs, which is EXTREMELY LIMITING for any band, but especially annoying for them given that there's offers! There's a lot of offers but he can't go 5 minutes indoors without the Badness coming out, and he is SO MAD about it. He spends more time than is necessary beating himself up over it despite repeatedly being assured by just about everyone that his safety comes first, and if it's something he can't do then it's something he can't do.

He's very annoyed and aware of how irrational his anxiety is, but it's something he's tried to work with, work against, find relief for, challenge........ and there's not been much improvement. He's just hoping it'll ease up over time or he'll find a way to manage it better in future, but in the present, it's got a chokehold on most of his life for much too long for his liking. The only big obstacle he's managed to conquer is the elevator, but even those need to have mirrors for the illusion of more space. He's employed the tactic of shutting off his brain for the extent of the ride and counting the chromatophores on his hands until he can get out because honestly he'd rather die than walk stairs.

If I had to explain how to grasp the Ignus Nilsen lore to a new DE player obviously I’d say you have to play the Communist political vision quest, I think you get quite a bit already from reading the infra-materialism book, you need certain skills like Encyclopedia to chime in for extra information (for instance it can tell you about his famous war crime, the Forest of Spears).

He, more so than Kras Mazov, is really the source of the wacky supernatural ideas that the quest explores. You have to have at least 30 communism points to get a cheeky little confirmation that there is something to the theory of “plasm” after all, although I think Nilsen himself didn’t elaborate as much on the details of plasm as his followers did, and you don’t have to take every claim at face value. It’s a reified metaphor, but Elysium is full of those.

The music that plays at the secret book club meeting is called “Ignus Nilsen Waltz”, which I think is neat.

If by this point the impression you get of him is of a weird nerd with a propensity for violence who may have had a gay thing with Mazov then that is also what I was feeling at the end of that quest. Perhaps you took note of Harry, self styled Kras Mazov impersonator, trying to egg Kim on into admitting they have a similar “special bond”. You may have also passed an Authority passive check that implies Harry sees “the most ancient power dynamic” in Steban and Ulixes, “one leader and one follower” (which is admittedly Authority’s bias, but it probably is meant to describe Kim and Harry too—technically Harry does outrank Kim and is the one leading the case).

If this sort of thing is catnip to you and you’re rolling around in it, then it would be a good next step to at least skim @revacholianpizzaagenda’s Sacred and Terrible Air chapter summaries. Then you will find out about possibly the craziest thing this man did (become an increasingly actual ghost after being a guy’s imaginary friend/Fury. it’s like if Harry’s Rhetoic was like yes I am the real ghost of Kras Mazov now). Also he also genuinely wanted to save the world from the Pale but it’s too late :(

So now that you know he can do that spooky shit you are ready to unleash the Communism Demon on your blorbos.

EDIT: And I suppose you’re wondering what he looked like if you want a mental image and I don’t know much but he is Vaasan so Scandinavian-ish, and Encyclopedia informs us that Vaasans are “beautiful and impossibly blond”. He probably also has some elements of his appearance in common with Kim and Ulixes (round spectacles makes sense) given that Harry and Steban have got a resemblance to Mazov. One might also suspect a dual resemblance to Engels and Trotsky since there are clearly parallels to both.

speaking of the dutch language. super interesting this one time my friend's aunt asked me if i often spoke english because she found my intonation/rhythm a little weird. She was right!!! and i kind of wonder if it was because she was from the north of the country and both my parents are from the south and if that has to do with ideas of how the language sounds to foreign ears, as stated in the article, "harsh, guttural, staccato". but i think the beauty comes from the rhythm of it.

i've lamented before that i can't do purple prose but literally when in my life would i learn meandering when the language itself is already this direct. Especially verbs aren't exempt from this. (to have been) beaten down -> teneergeslagen. and i think there is beauty in there too, you just have to make it work for you.

one of my favourite poems ever is called "dit is de stem van mijn worgengel" this is the voice of my angel of death. (? something like that at least) Which i will link HERE. worgengel from worgen/wurgen -> to strangle + engel -> angel. and it's such a purely acoustic poem... i think there is a beautiful rhythm to it, while at the same time there is very little coherency to be found in relation to meaning. maybe a few phrases or sentences make sense, but as a whole it's hard to follow, it's not one narrative. even when reading it in your head you are forced into a rhythm, which the staccato characteristics actually help with.

and there's no point to this post than just being a rumination on the lovely text i reblogged earlier. But honestly a lot of dutch folks these days are taking over the idea that dutch is like an inherently ugly language so they'd much rather speak/read/write in english. which is objectively insane. girl that's your mother tongue. and so i do think it would be healthy to cultivate maybe a different appreciation for it. Btw, I think I never managed to eather watch shows weekly (except for "keep your hands off Eizuken", but this one is just fantastic) nor binge entire shows on my own (except for "paranoia agent", but this one is classic). Maybe it's a matter or correctly spacing episodes, so that there won't be as much time apart that I'll lose interest, but they shouldn't be back to back so that I'll lose concentration from sheer overwhelming. Especially since watching anything, except for maybe a couple of movies I know from start to finish, is a Commitment of my time and attention.

So I haven't seen a series completely since Steven universe ended. And those couple of full-meter movies I managed to watch till the end were "engel's egg" and "father, grandpa frost is dead".

Healthier options on the menu as California begins providing free meals for all students

Egg white breakfast wraps, vegetarian ramen, gumbo, glazed carrots and organic cheeseburgers aren’t just trendy restaurant offerings — they’re on some of the breakfast and lunch menus at California schools.

With an influx of state and federal funding aimed at expanding access to school meals, California districts are ramping up food production, upgrading menus and using more fresh, healthy ingredients than before. School meals will continue to be free for all California students, as they have been since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Education leaders such as Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Alberto Carvalho hope that by ensuring all students get fed for free while at school, and improving the quality of meals, districts can combat food insecurity experienced by families in their area.

“It’s a human right to have your child fed every single day, no questions asked,” Carvalho said at a recent news conference. “So bring your children to school early enough for them to benefit from breakfast, tell them to walk the line and benefit from the free lunch and let’s enjoy it.”

Carvalho said his favorite new item on LAUSD’s menu was the kung pao chicken, which has a honey glaze and comes with brown rice and broccoli. He also tasted the district’s new cinnamon rolls, ramen bowls, smoothies, and yogurt and fruit breakfast bowls and said he enjoyed them all.

The 2022-23 school year will be the first that California, along with Maine, Vermont and a few other states are promising to provide every child with free breakfast and lunch. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has reimbursed districts for providing free meals to all students. Before then, districts were only reimbursed for feeding low-income students enrolled in the National School Lunch Program.

The USDA’s universal meal program sunsets at the beginning of the 2022-23 school year, though it will still reimburse districts for meals for low-income students. Starting this school year, California and the other states have taken it upon themselves to pick up the remainder of the bill to provide free school meals to all students. Democrats in Congress have proposed legislation that would expand students’ access to free school meals, and the USDA is increasing its reimbursement rates for free meals. The USDA has also invested millions in programs to promote partnerships between schools and farms, as well as to support districts to improve the quality of school meals.

In 2021-22, California lawmakers committed to allocating $650 million each year to the universal free meal program, as well as $54 million in the 2021-22 budget to supplement state meal reimbursements to districts. The 2022-23 budget provided an extra $600 million toward a grant program to upgrade schools’ kitchen infrastructure and $100 million for a grant program to promote the best food-procurement practices, such as buying California grown-produce and providing options for students with dietary restrictions.

West Contra Costa Unified, in the East Bay Area, used the extra funds to purchase a mobile food truck, and through a partnership with nonprofit Conscious Kitchen, the district receives fresh produce for scratch-cooked school meals. Conscious Kitchen works with schools to provide organic meals to students.

Some of West Contra Costa’s new menu offerings this year include spicy maple-glazed chicken, ham musubi and strawberry muffins.

Dominic Engels, CEO of Oakland-based healthy meal distributor Revolution Foods, which contracts with school districts throughout the country, said the public’s attention to nutrition has been growing over the past 20 years and that parents’ concern over how healthy school meals are is at an “all-time high.” Engels chalked that up to food-driven ads through social media.

“The world is tuned into what food does, and that has trickled down to schools,” Engels said. “That trend is going to continue.”

New to Fresno Unified this year is an app and interactive website that provides parents and guardians information on school meals for breakfast and lunch each day. The app shows an image and description of the meals, as well as nutrition and allergen information, according to a Fresno Unified news release. Some of Fresno Unified’s new meal items include cheeseburgers with USDA certified organic beef, tacos with bean or beef queso, and whole grain muffins.

“Providing healthy, appealing meals goes a long way to helping our students focus on their learning,” Fresno Unified Superintendent Bob Nelson said in a statement.

Barbara Jellison, the district’s food services director, said West Contra Costa Unified began sourcing more ingredients from Bay Area farmers for ingredients such as cheese, meat, fruits and vegetables as well as local bakers during the pandemic as supply chain issues caused delivery delays and surcharges from some large food distributors throughout the country. Some of those farmers had never sold to schools before, Jellison said.

“We’ve been really creative these last three years, and it’s improved our meal program,” Jellison said.

This year, the district’s goal is to have fewer prepackaged meals in an effort to reduce waste, Jellison said. The district calls meals they either cook at schools or serve on site “plate-it-up meals.”  The district has also been working over the past few years to cook more meals in-house as opposed to purchasing prepared foods. Last year, the district went from having around 30% of meals cooked by kitchen staff to around 70%, Jellison said.

“Kids like to see the freshly prepared meals and the variety,” Jellison said. “It takes time to get them on board because it’s different to them — some of the meals they haven’t had before. It does take time and education.”

Jellison said the key to getting kids to actually eat the healthier food options instead of things like pizza and hot dogs is offering a wider variety of meals to students and educating them on nutrition. The district also does taste testing for new menu items to get feedback from students and keeps track of what food items students gravitate toward or avoid in order to improve the menu.

USDA Undersecretary Stacy Dean said the “farm-to-school connection” is crucial to strengthening local food systems, and withstanding global supply chain and inflation impacts. Dean, who visited a summer meal drop off at West Contra Costa Unified, said the district is “leading the way” with its partnerships with local farmers, and that districts throughout the country should pay attention.

to start, i've got some ocs from a damn while ago called adrian & daniel, based on adrian from temporary boyfriend. i typed up a decently long thing about them a while ago but can't find it anymore so basically, the year is 2002 and adrian capaldi (he/she/it/they) could kick anyone's ass, and daniel matthews (he/him, she/shells, e/em, blank/blanks) is some nervous schmuck who tends to prefer written communication to verbal. after some shenanigans in which his friends egg him on a whole bunch to arrange some kind of date with them, they actually start up more elaborate communication over letters, at first, then, once adrian's introduced it to em decently, online forums & chat rooms! they hang around queer servers mostly, having fun on the wonders of digital communication. daniel's black & jewish, and adrian is of scottish descent.

more recently (& far less developed, as in i am going to make up all their names on the spot right now), how about arlet cisneros ibarra (she/her, ble/bleeps, byte/bytes, zi/ziz), the titular tetris girl of that very song, and her girlfriend fatima saleh (they/them, she/her, ve/vim, pri/prer). figures of legends in two completely different social spheres. nobody ever sees them like, hanging out together, but whenever someone asks out arlet zi's like nah i have a partner, and fatima is frequently going oh man thanks for the free dress my gf will adore it, and so on. arlet is mexican & puerto rican, fatima is liberian.

in contrast, the two guys from abigail- logan engels & ryan yang, they/he criss/cross & he/ze/xe respectively -are never apart from each other. ever. they're the number one slightly annoying, incredibly affectionate, and dysfunctional-seeming gay couple you'll ever meet. they are most commonly seen: bickering whilst cuddling in public, offering unwarranted relationship advice to the hets, and fucking it up in gay bars. i'd say they also date abigail but that's up to june because she's more his oc. regardless they are bi4bi solidarity And hostility. logan is wichita native and ryan is (east) chinese.

i don't have much to say about grace, other than: protagonist/pov character of glamour, transfem she/ey, the girlfriend of not my girlfriend. the (not referred to as such but, c'mon) not my boyfriend of not my girlfriend is adam (transmasc he/vae/it, mouse/mouself), extremely t-not-4-t-because-they're-both-acespec-and-arospec solidarity with grace. the specific line "no, but thanks for asking, she is not my girlfriend" i imagine takes place at a party where some fuck took a look at adam & how much it was hanging around grace, decided to hit her up through him, and misgendered em in the process, to which an extremely emphatic She is not my Girlfriend is like. the only response adam could think of making. mouse is a bit of a mess <3. both of them are african american, adam of sudanese descent.

what else what else. more miscellaneously i like to imagine every hapless guy who's just kind of a pov for songs like andrea, rosemary's baby, secretary of state, geo, and so on (mostly better dating through technology songs. huh) just kinda hangs out sometimes to lament about the struggles of life, girl-related or not. except the gravitational pull guys. they never suffer because they have physics.

the pov guy from satan is a baby (that lives in the sun) is like 6 years old and definitely one of the dudes' younger brothers (maybe they share older brotherhood of them or something) and they also have a younger sibling who's like. 3. and watches the teletubbies a lot. terrifying hir older sister. one time they tried asking their teacher for help with the teletubbies problem but their older brother told their teacher ahead of time to prank them and instead they just ended up crying and because of that i think their older brother took them to one of the Hapless Fellows meetings as compensation. it all worked out in the end because the baby sibling got put watching sesame street instead. god knows why ze was watching a british show in the first place.
