i love when the horror story is very clearly a meditation on the mundanity of violence, with just an added sprinkling of the supernatural for kicks. like yeah, this story’s about the horrors of domestic violence in rural upstate new yawk, and one woman’s mission to get some hick to confess about killing her brother bc of a woman, but there might also be a wendigo involved somewhere. mayhaps 😂

We're missing a scene in Catching Fire where Effie finds out what the quarter quell is. When she finds out that haymitch could get reaped. She isn't privy to all of their scheming so she might think their strategy is to have haymitch in the games. All she knows is that the one person who has consistently been in her life, and she consistently in his, who she thought was safe from ever being reaped again, could be going back in the arena.
Romantic or not they have a trauma bond like no other and I mean that literally, the two of them have been coaching kids who have died, two by two, for decades. Now that trauma is returning in full force as history is repeating itself, Effie is a stylist and haymitch is in the reaping pool.

I love dragon!Sylus but I feel like it would have been deeply satisfying for Sylus to become more and more wrong when his hunger starts to take him over. Legs cracking back, bone-like spines ripping through his skin, jaw snapping and hanging open, fangs growing, eyes bleeding as scales force themselves through his flesh.
The idea of this beast that feeds off human souls, the fact he appears to others how they see him, but when the hunger latches on into his chest and rips at his soul he becomes more and more monstrous, harder to trust, more terrifying. Especially if it instinctually makes mortals COVER. Prey instinct flaring and shaking.

k so that poll about where Katniss and Peeta live once they're together is going around and I'm not here to tell anyone their headcanon is wrong but I keep seeing one thing in some tags that bothers me and that's the idea that Peeta's house doesn't have any ghosts, and the implication that Katniss is suffering the loss of Prim more than Peeta is suffering the loss of his family. His entire family.
I know his family didn't live with him, I know he had a bad relationship with his mom and his relationship with the rest of his family is a mystery, but that doesn't mean his house doesn't have ghosts. We don't know exactly what happened there besides the fact that he lived alone. His brothers could have come by to cheer him up, bringing cards to play poker and slap jack. He and his dad could have worked on new baking recipes in his kitchen. And look, even abusive parents aren't always terrible, and maybe his mom was trying to repair their relationship when he got back. We just don't know! And even if no one ever stepped a foot in his house the whole time, that is a whole other ghost--a feeling that he was never home, a house of his nightmares and pain and loneliness following returning from the Games.
I get that Katniss's loss was devastating and she externally reacts to it more than Peeta, who tries to hide the effect of his trauma, and I understand the logic that Peeta's house is easier or he would stuff down the pain to ease Katniss's, but he has ghosts in his house, too.

did we ever find out if the hanging tree was known by anyone else in 12? katniss learned it from her father, peeta heard mr. e sing it, lucy gray wrote and sang it for only coryo and maude ivory, right? or am i crazy and did she perform it at the hob? was katniss the only person around then in mockingjay who actually knew the song?

They created a strange tableau: rabid boy, trapped girl, bombed-out building. It suggested a tale that could only end in tragedy. Star-crossed lovers meeting their fate. A revenge story turned in on itself. A war saga that took no prisoners.

In honor of one year since the tbosas movie came out, it’s time people finally admit it’s a terrible adaptation. Yes, you’re still allowed to enjoy it, ‘cause at the end of the day it’s a good movie, but saying it’s remotely close to being a good adaptation is a huge lie, when it completely fucked up the plot, all the characters, the symbolism, the themes, removed fundamental aspects and events of the story, and changed others as if it was nothing, completely missing the whole point and messing with it

Why do you like Gale? No hate, I’m honestly glad because I feel like we’re a minority because everyone seems to detest him. What is it specifically about his character that draws you in? For me it’s his endurance despite loss, his devotion to the cause, he’s the flawed rebel that isn’t pure because the system doesn’t allow him to be.
I like him for the reasons you just listed too. His growing hatred towards the capitol and his commitment to ending the oppressive situation is relatable and REAL. He is willing to make the hard choices that aren't always morally right but under the circumstances I can understand why he is willing to use violence, why he accepts that they aren't going to win this rebellion without a few civilian casualties. He was fully committed to the rebellion and was willing to die for Panem to be free and wasn't naive to how that was going to be achieved. I can respect that. Especially given his life circumstances and how much trauma he's been through (something that fans ignore because he wasn't in the horror that is the games, therefore, his trauma doesn't count). We get insight into his view on the people in the capital, the privileged, early on, Before the reaping he says "if they all stopped watching, there wouldn't be any games." in his eyes they are all complicit, which isn't necessarily true for every single peson but you can understand his point. The people in the capitol could at the very least all boycott the games and this would put an end to them because then no one would be profiting off them. We know this to be true as well because the games were not successful and barely anyone watched them in TBOSAS and they were likely going to stop them.
Another reason I like him is because of how loyal he is to his family, the everdeens (he would have taken care of them if Katniss had died and was taking care of them when she wasn't around) and his loyalty to his district. He saved as many people as he possibly could from 12 during the genocide and yet, he still felt guilty that he couldn't do more. It is important to note that it was AFTER witnessing the genocide that he fully became involved in the rebellion and the creation of weapons and was willing to make the tough calls that would've got people killed. He was still a rebel in the making before then but who can blame him? his father is killed in the mines and he has to take care of his mother and siblings and make sure they don't starve to death (yes people in district 12 were literally dying of starvation if anyone is forgetting that fact) and Katniss was the only person who understood this. He resents the fact that some people are living in luxury when his people are suffering so much, he hated the class system and wealth disparity which separates the districts and that is something most of us can understand in todays world. In catching fire, when more people started hating him, he's working 12 hour shifts in the mines that killed his father and yet, his family still don't have enough food to get by, he has siblings who are now getting old enough to enter the games and there's nothing he can do to help them if they get reaped because he's aged out and can't volunteer on his behalf. He acted like a dick at times but he was also suffering and lets not forget that moment when he was TORTURED by peacekeepers and could have been killed had Katniss not stepped in.
I don't agree with all of his decisions but when this war started there was no going back, they either win and create a better Panem or they die, their loved ones die or worse, they suffer fates worse than death and worse than the lives they had before. The first rebellion resulted in the games and further oppression of the districts, imagine how it would've ended if this rebellion was lost? When you're fighting a leader as brutal as Snow you have to fight dirty and be prepared to make terrible moves that Snow thinks you haven't got it in you to make.
Gale is resilient, passionate, a fighter, loyal, smart (disagree with his strategies but they were good and pragmatic war strategies) and just as flawed as any other complex character. It is a shame people hate him so much, and mainly because of a love triangle that Suzanne never intended to write in the first place.
Sidenote: the way the fandom hated on him just made me analyse his character more closely and like him MORE which is a bit of pattern with me and unfairly hated characters.

im back from the dead and doing my abcs aka H B W Y for cian ozy and imbris xx
thank you!! 😊 | AU ABCs
H. horror. Would your OC survive in a horror situation? What would their role be? How would they deal with being tossed in a horror scenario?
cian & ozy — answered!
imbris — i fear he's too reckless and brash to survive. he'd try and overcompensate for his fear with boldness and it would get him killed (unless someone fully drags him out of the horror situation by the scruff of his neck. i believe sabine could manage it)
B. band au. What is your OC like in a band AU? Are they a performer or a groupie? What instrument would they play? What’s their relationship with their bandmates and/or the group(s) they follow?
cian — guy who simply cannot be on stage lest he die of shyness. he's the travel medic following the band around to make sure they're taking care of their voices etc. (i can see him as a singer-songwriter though, with stripped back, melancholy music. maybe he'd sing in gaelic...)
ozy — for all his charisma i just can't see him on stage, he's not a musician or a performer in that way. he's also not a groupie or a technician or a manager so idk what the fuck he'd do in band AU. maybe he's an actor who becomes friends with the band? i definitely have an actor AU for ozy...
imbris — band AU is one of my favourite imbris AUs. he's definitely a lead singer (he's got the voice and looks and charisma) and he loves his job so much, even when it's exhausting. being on stage is when he feels most like himself. he'd also know how to play piano/keyboard but he's extremely mediocre on the guitar.
W. werewolves (& vampires). Is your OC more of a vampire or a werewolf? How would they feel about being turned into a creature of the night? Would they be part of a clan, a pack, a coven?
cian — this is tricky but i was just struck by the idea of a vampire doctor having to suppress their hunger every time they treat someone and for that reason alone i will say vampire. the ironclad will on this little guy. vampirism isn't something he would have wanted but he finds meaning in it. he wouldn't be in a coven. (maybe athras is his sire? make the relationship MORE complicated!)
ozy — well see i've discussed vampire AU pretty extensively with my DM (vampire ozy who was turned by kallux at the owl's behest and proceeded to become a complete monster, except kallux can never quite kill him because they're bound by blood) but. but. ozy is simply so dog-coded. i very much enjoy imagining him as kallux's werewolf boyfriend. (at the end of the day i do think vampire makes more sense for him thematically. the immortality and the apathy and the existentialism of it all)
imbris — every time i've ever thought about imbris in a supernatural AU i kind of enjoy him being the token human, but if i had to choose... hm. maybe vampire? but a campy vampire. completely different genre from ozy. at first he'd see vampirism as the ultimate freedom but he'd get lonely after a while. honestly he might try and find a cure pretty quickly (especially if he fell in love with a particular human...)
Y. YA. How would your OC fare in a popular YA franchise, like Hunger Games or Divergent? Would they buy into the system? Fight against it? What would their district/faction/house/etc. be?
cian — guy who is just trying to keep his head down and make people's lives a little easier on the small scale. he'd get dragged into the plot against his will but once he's there he'd do his best to help, probably acting as some kind of moral anchor. trying to picture hunger games cian is so grim, i have no fucking idea how this guy would survive the games. (i guess with a lot of luck and trauma). he might be from District 7 (lumber) or 11 (agriculture).
ozy — this bitch IS the system. after being chewed up and spat out of his own disastrous story he'd infiltrate whichever shitty government is in power, waiting in the shadows for the opportunity to shift the status quo but being very much complicit in the crimes of the regime until that point. for example in hunger games AU he'd be a sort of plutarch heavensbee. it's shocking how closely that character matches his canon energy.
imbris — he has huge "underdog fighting against the system" energy, but he'd probably be a secondary or supporting character in the story. in hunger games AU he'd have johanna vibes for sure, except with less skill to back up the attitude. i can see a world where he's actually from District 2 but his family is in disgrace so he never got any of the training. everyone is very confused when the male tribute from 2 looks like a sickly victorian ghost boy. if not 2, maybe District 6 (transport), for his abiding desire to escape in the machines his district makes.

I did not remember Gale being so manipulative towards Katniss, I remembered him being extremely annoying while he helps Coin with her war crimes but I did not remeber how much of a red flag of a man he was wow
