TRIGGER WARNING: Discussion of Cancer, child abuse and rape
Smiffina Episodes - Episode 295
Gina received the bad news that she had cervical cancer last episode and had to stay in for tests. Luckily they've caught it early so the prognosis is good. She's running late for work but she covers with June, telling her her car has broken down and she asks her to hold the fort, promising to be in as soon as possible. "Yesterdays investigation went well, it gave us the chance to look at your bowel and bladder." "Ooh lucky you!" He wants to run a few more test on her whilst she's there and advises she tells work about it. "No, I don't do that tea and sympathy stuff." her consultant frowns, "You'll feel more isolated if you don't." Gina simply shrugs. "I'm used to that." 💔
It's Marilyn's funeral that day, but Gabriel's mind is on Gemma, wondering if the Child Protection Team had spoken to her and were looking after her. Sheelagh teases him for having grown a social concience. "It's not like you!" she chuckles. As they reach the top of the ramp, Rowan Morrell appears (she's covering for Neil whilst he has time off) to tell him it looks as though Gemma's stepmum has done a bunk with her and her brother. Rowan asks them to stay on the case and help find her. As they search they keep flirting... Finally they find the step mother - she says she's sent the children down to be with her sister. They don't believe her and keep investigating and flirting...
Lance and Amber are at the hospital for a case when Amber happens to see Gina speaking to a receptionist. She's handed a leaflet that she disposes of as she leaves. Amber - who has literally hidden so Gina doesn't see her - has a look at the leaflet, cottoning onto what Gina was being seen for...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amber and Lance has messed up on their case by taking their victim's statement and then hurrying over to arrest their suspect. Unfortunately any sharp brief can point out that any DNA of the victim found on the suspect or in their flat can now be blamed on those two. Gina sighs and says she'll sort it and asks where the victim is - she's back at St Hughes still so Gina must - reluctantly - return.
Gabriel uses an excuse of buying flowers for Sheelagh to speak to the missing girls grandma who is a florist. Sheelagh is amused and accepts them - by kissing his cheek before getting in the car. Gabriel looks thoughtful... He suspects that Mrs Bentley, Gemma's step mum, hates Gemma because she reminds her - and her father - of his former wife who died. She thinks the boys are at her sisters - but that Gemma is still in the property. He opens up to Sheelagh. "I know what it's like to crave love and not get it back. We don't want her growing up like me." "I don't know, she could do worse." Sheelagh smiles.
Gina speaks to the victim and interviews her, the poor elderly lady is terrified and keeps saying she doesn't want to make a fuss. Gina sends Lance and Amber to go and get a drink whilst she talks to her, aware there's something that Pearl is hiding from them. Sadly Pearl admits that the man who attacked her also raped her. Pearl doesn't want anyone else to know. She will deny it, she just wants to be left alone. She can't bear it to become public knowledge. "Somethings are best left secret. Can you understand that?" she begs Gina - who sadly does.
Gina interviews the suspect who is a "right cocky so and so." she suspends the interview and tells him she knows exactly what he's done. His solicitor tries to stand to stop her, "Sit down you, you're defending a rapist! Did he tell you that? No, I didn't think so." The brief sits. Gina gives him an option - he either admits the robbery and assault or she'll return to Pearl and do everything in her power to get her to change her mind so he's also charged for the rape. With no option - he coughs to the assault and burglary.
Gabriel returns to the house and barges his way in, conducting an illegal search of the premises to find Gemma. He locates her in the basement much to the horror of her step mother who had bound and abused her.
At the end of her shift, Amber lets herself into Gina's office and tells her that she saw her that morning and she saw her dispose of the leaflet she was given. She offers herself - nervously - to talk to her if she wants to. Gina smiles. "It's alright, you don't need to talk to the old bag about her health problems. You'll be relieved to know that I do not need a shoulder to cry on." She tells her not to tell anyone and sits with her head in her hands after dismissing Amber.
Gabriel is at the hospital after work, watching over Gemma. Sheelagh finds him and gently guides him away. He feels sorry for himself "Nothing I do turns out right." he says, worrying about Gemma ending up in care. Sheelagh reassures him he did everything he could to get the right outcome. "It's not enough though is it." he says - before Sheelagh pounces forward and kisses him. "You should have more faith in yourself, Gabriel. I do."

The Top 5 Carmen Sandiego Adaptations
And by adaptations, I strictly mean mediums in which you as a player serve no function, you are only here to observe. Therefore not the computer games, nor the board games, nor the choose-your-own-adventure style books. Just the shows, chapter books, and comic books.
Honorable(?) Mention: The DC Comics Series.
Tumblr media
This only lasted four issues before being cancelled, and honestly? I can see why. I like the idea behind this series, which is compositing the various versions of Carmen Sandiego into one (the older games, the newer games, the PBS gameshow...had it continued we may have gotten stuff from the syndicated animated series.) The problem is that there is way too much going on in almost every panel. It's the equivalent of an obnoxious children's show that thinks constant movement and loud noises is the only way to keep its young viewer's attention. Beyond that, the main character Evan and his sidekick Bazooka Mel aren't that interesting or likeable, and Carmen herself barely shows up or does anything. It was a nice try, but it failed.
5: Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?
Tumblr media
This PBS gameshow was the successor to Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, lasting for two seasons and a total of 115 episodes across 1996 and 1997. For comparisons sake, its predecessor lasted for five seasons across five years, with a total of 295 episodes. And that kind of says it all. I like things about this show - having people play historical figures and interact with the contestants is fun, the villains, also depicted by real-life actors, are a good balance of wacky and intimidating especially with the creepy effects around them and their willingness to attack the contestants directly, and much like its predecessor the final solo challenge is always exciting to watch. The problem is that it just doesn't feel like Carmen Sandiego. ACME is suddenly this hard sci-fi oriented group feeling more like the Federation from Star Trek than a detective agency, Carmen is a cackling supervillain out to make people miserable rather than a classy master thief, and while Lynne Thigpin's Chief is as delightful as ever, she and Kevin Shinick just lack the chemistry she had with Greg Lee....heck, Shinick himself is a major step down from Lee in just about every way. I think he was funnier in the Robot Chicken sketch about the show than he ever was on the show itself! I feel as though if this show was its own thing, totally removed from Carmen Sandiego, it would work better.
4: Carmen Sandiego
Tumblr media
The recent Netflix series has a wonderful two-part pilot, "Becoming Carmen Sandiego", that shows exactly how this incarnation is going to differ from previous ones - namely with Carmen being an anti-hero going against V.I.L.E with the help of "Player" rather than the leader of V.I.L.E who "Player" is trying to catch - and with a lot of interesting possibilities on the horizon, particularly with its somewhat darker tone and reinventions of characters from several separate past continuities. And it's all downhill from there! OK, that's a bit harsh, but as I've noted recently the show really did squander its potential more and more with each passing season, culminating in a finale that made it crushingly clear that the developers did just seek to keep Carmen an anti-hero the whole way rather than go through the villain origin story that was logically being set up. It never felt like it truly knew what it wanted to be, and almost every character and plotline ended up suffering as a result. It's got great visual style and superb voice-acting, and I appreciate the attention it brought back to the otherwise dead property, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone as a first experience with Carmen Sandiego.
3: The Carmen Sandiego Mysteries
Tumblr media
This series of juvenile chapter books had a total of six installments: two representing World, two representing USA, and two representing Time. And it's a shame that's all we got, because these were pretty damn good! Maya and Ben are likable leads, Carmen is a competent and even somewhat threatening villain while still maintaining her own personal code of ethics, and it does what a good adaptation should in keeping the feel and style of the computer games while also making allowances for the medium shift. I especially like "Take the Mummy and Run", which includes some legit emotional drama and a non-Carmen villain.
2: Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?
Tumblr media
Pretty similar to the Carmen Sandiego Mysteries books in that it features a young boy/girl duo of detectives hunting down a similarly characterized Carmen. But this being a syndicated animated TV show rather than a book series, it lasted longer - 40 episodes total, and even got its own spinoff computer game Carmen Sandiego: Junior Detective Edition. There's also more of an action-y feel to it despite the network censors preventing anything overtly violent from happening, siblings Zack and Ivy are even more charismatic protagonists than Ben and Maya, and the great Rita Moreno just is Carmen; her alluring voice probably sticks out in most people's memory when thinking about the character. I do question why an AI Chief was used rather than a human one, as that just feels weird, but thanks to Rodger Bumpass' voicework he gets a lot of laughs so I can let it slide. The one thing that drags this show down is the educational aspect, as it manifests in a lot of ham-fisted monologuing from characters that grinds the pacing of each episode to a halt every time. Guys, you're in a 22-minute TV episode, not Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors! You're kind of pressed for time here! It's the one thing I think the Netflix show actually did better, as while there were still lines here and there serving as educational the series usually focused on showing rather than telling as should be expected of the animation medium. However...this theme song goes way harder than it needs to, so maybe that balances things out. And speaking of stellar theme songs....
1: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
Tumblr media
This legendary PBS gameshow simply IS Carmen Sandiego distilled into a compact form easily transmitted via airwaves. It's got the thrill of the chase while learning more about the world down perfectly, it's got the old-school detective vibe and the quirky humor, and it's got a stellar cast of characters - not only is this the first time Carmen herself displayed any real personality, but we've got a truly memorable Rogues Gallery of V.I.L.E operatives serving her. And even if the different kid contestants opposing them each episode do nothing for you, we still have Lynne Thigpen as THE Chief of ACME, Greg Lee as one of the funniest and most energetic gameshow hosts you could ask for, and of course - ROCKAPELLA! It's easy to see why this show endured for as long as it did and while it's still fondly looked upon even now.

Capture - Ichigo Kurosaki
Note: I was listening to bleach episodes in the background while catching up on my schoolwork, and now my head’s overloaded with Ichigo drabble ideas.
Content note: Established relationship, after sex sort of scenario, unedited (wrote this in ten minutes I think), College AU, Modern AU
wc:295
Tumblr media
To Ichigo whose phone storage was eaten up by the many pictures that he had the intention of posting, he’s never understood why you were the type to pull out your phone and ‘capture’ the feeling. ‘It ruins’ the moment he says, but still, he tolerates you. Always enjoying the soft look on your face when you angled your camera toward the cake slice he bought to share.
There was one picture in particular.
A picture of his naked back with faint scratches from your nails, your legs barely wrapping around his torso as he held you close. The mirror he sat in front of caught the mess of his blankets and pillows thrown to the bed frame. “Love you,” he repeated, kissing the side of her head, savouring the feeling as their highs came down. A month of being separated from her by his duties as a substitute soul reaper and their university work.
He heard the sound of a camera, making him move away and turn his head to look at her. An eyebrow irked. “Let me see,” a delight to her that he didn’t ask why she took a picture.
Ichigo never understood why you were the type to take the prettiest pictures for yourself until he was shown the picture you took. Your head rested on his chin, body covered by his back. It’d be a shocker to his some thousand-something followers on Instagram if that picture ever gets out. “Do you like it?” You ask, pulling yourself closer to him.
“Let’s post it, hmm?” He breathes, laying the two of you on the bed again. “They’ll leave me alone when they see this.”
You kiss his cheek, his warmth already lulling you to a nap. “Cover my face, yeah?”
“Course”

2023 Writing Roundup
Thanks @inexplicablymine for the tag! This was a lot of fun to do
January
Satisfied (Never Have Been, Never Will Be) — RWRB, T, 833
Or, a rewrite of the lyrics of "Satisfied" from Hamilton set at the beginning of Philip and Martha's wedding, except Alex is a little flirtier and a little less repressed, told from Henry's pov.
February
Some Element of Mystery — RWRB, M, 4k
Or, five times that Alex thought Henry was a stripper, plus one time Henry corrected him. Written for the informal stripper!Henry fest.
March
Was working on finishing my master's thesis instead of fic for the most part, though I did write a few drabbles and make progress on my reincarnation au (see November)
April
Burn (They're Watching Us/I Hope That They) — RWRB, T, 295
Or, a rewrite of the lyrics of "Burn" from Hamilton, set immediately after the email leak, told from Alex's pov.
May
Graduated/finished my master's 🎉🎉 while also writing more of my reincarnation au (see November), including some major revisions
June
Got sick for part of the month, then spent the rest of it furiously working on my brownstone anniversary exchange fic (see July) doing tons of (probably unnecessary) research about Saturday Night Live and royal weddings.
July
SNL | Season 45 Episode 2 | HRH Prince Henry & FSOTUS Alex Claremont-Diaz — RWRB, M, 9k
Or, the fic in which I said bet and sent firstprince onto Saturday Night Live instead of having Alex go to London for a weekend. Written for the Brownstone Anniversary Fic Exchange.
August
Spent the month trying to make a lot of progress on reincarnation au (see November) and finally got some betas
September
Had a bad case of writer's block for most of the month, then went insane and wrote something for firstprince week (see October) despite promising myself I wasn't going to participate
October
Not a Day I Don't Miss (Those Rude Interruptions) — RWRB, T, 2k
Or, a Henry character study set during the week following Henry running from the lake house, loosely inspired by Taylor Swift's "Last Kiss". Written for firstprince week.
November
Red, White, and Royal Switcheroo — RWRB, T, 6k
Or, a body swap au set during Alex's "make nice" trip to England in which Alex and Henry have to play at being each other, and Alex discovers Henry's role is, in fact, very much not much easier to play. Written for Halloween, Huh?
Every Time My Heart Swings Back to You — RWRB, M, ~90k (ongoing)
Or, a reincarnation au set mostly in the modern era with college students Alex and Henry trying to piece together the story of their past lives as a knight and a prince through a series of non-linear flashbacks.
December
Trying my best to finish reincarnation au while also plotting out a very ambitious fic for a new fandom (mysterious lotus casebook) that I'll be trying to tackle in 2024. Also the month I got super into cdramas/c-ent.
--
Wow, compiling all this made me realize I wrote a whole lot more than I thought: posting 9 stories and writing around 50k new words! I also participated in a lot more fan events than ever before and finally begin sharing the story that's been living in my brain and docs only for almost three years. All in all, a very satisfying year for me while also looking forward to new projects in 2024~
I'm probably one of the last wants to get to this but tagging a few others who I don't think have done this (let me know though if you have) @14carrotghoul @formorewishes @affectionatelyrs @anincompletelist @celaestis1 @celeritas2997 @cricketnationrise, plus open tag because I'd love to see anyone else's writing year in review~
