nothin wild from me today, just a little interaction I enjoy from the vampire support group
“Hi, Nat,” said the first goth. “I am Epson. Like the printer.”
“I’m Ampersand,” said the second goth. “Like the squiggly guy.”
“I’m Greg,” said Greg.
“If you would like to add glitter to your nametag, I know where I can get you some,” Epson said. “Atsuo does not leave it out because it goes everywhere but his daughter has a craft cupboard and I know where it is.”
“Th-thanks!” Nat said. “I’m fine, though.”
“No. You need glitter,” Epson said, and she vanished.
With nothing else to do but start, Nat seized an orange marker. He spelled his name out in bubble letters, all caps, and drew a kitty cat face after it.
“Do you like Quantumfish?” Ampersand asked. “I have Parker stickers.”
Nat noticed a few chibi Parker faces on Ampersand’s own nametag, and he nodded. Ampersand leaned over and ceremoniously placed a tiny Parker brandishing a laser cannon on the other side of Nat’s name.
“So where are you from, Nat?” Greg asked.
“Bright Park,” Nat said. “How about you?”
“We’re all from Port Peri,” Greg replied. “We make the drive down every fortnight. There’s no stuff like this out where we are.”
“Folks come from all over,” Ampersand said. “One guy’s from all the way on the Bronze Coast—he comes over once a month just for us.”
“Not just for us,” Greg said. “For the group.”
“No, for us, specifically,” said Ampersand.

My second painting of Data is complete! I'm not quite as fond of this one as the first one. I think the fact that I did it on hot press paper has something to do with it. This may be my first time using hot press, but I could be forgetting a previous attempt. I hope you guys like it though! As before, here's a video so you can see it sparkle under the light!
Tools: Paul Rubens hot press cotton watercolor paper 7.6 x 5.3 inch, Pentel Click 0.7 pencil, Pentel hi-polymer eraser, Sakura Pigma Micron 01 pen, Aquash watercolor brush, Mei Liang watercolor paints, Sakura Koi metallic watercolor paints, Epson Perfection 4490 scanner.

Meanwhile, in Brickland
Cory Doctorow:
Analog companies can raise their prices, or worsen next year's model of their products. *Digital* businesses can *travel back in time* and raise the price of something you already own, but need to pay a "subscription" fee for. They can reach back in time and remove features you've already paid for. They can even go back in time and take away things you already own. The omniflexible, omnipresent digital tether between a device and its manufacturer creates *so many* urges that they can't resist:
Are you one of 4,000,000 people who built "smart home" products from Wink into your walls, ceiling and foundation slab at any time since they started shipping in 2014? Surprise! Now you have to pay a "subscription" for all of those gadgets or they'll *brick your fucking house*:
Did you buy a "Mellow Sous Vide" gadget? Surprise, it now costs $48/year to use that gadget!
Did you buy an Exogen ultrasound device to stimulate bone growth after a fracture? Surprise, it bricks itself after you've used it 343 times! Enjoy your e-waste, Hopalong!
Did you *buy a Ferrari performance sports-car*? Surprise, it bricks itself if it detects "tampering" - and the only way to un-brick it is to connect it to the internet, so you'd better hope it doesn't brick itself deep in an underground parking garage. Oops!
Did you buy a Peloton treadmill? Surprise, your $3,000 "smart" treadmill no longer works in standalone mode - unless you pay $480/year, that treadmill is now a clothes-drying rack:
Did you buy an Epson printer? Surprise! It will brick itself after you print a certain number of pages, *for your own good*, because otherwise its ink-sponges might leak:
Did you get - no, wait for it - *did you get a neural implant?* Surprise. The company's new owners don't want to continue supporting your implant, and they won't let anyone else do so either. So now, *part of your brain* has been bricked:
This is like a lifetime money-back guarantee - *for companies*. Any company that experience's seller's remorse can cancel or alter the transaction, retroactively. It's as if Darth Vader opened an MBA program whose only lesson was *I am altering the deal. Pray I don't alter it further":
Darth Vader has the Force. Corporate enshittifiers have something even more powerful: IP law. Companies can cleverly arrange overlapping layers of IP - anticircumvention, trademark, patent, trade secrecy, terms of service, cybersecurity law, contracts - to criminalize otherwise legal activity, like reverse-engineering, jailbreaking, creating alternative clients or third-party parts:
That means that companies know that they can enshittify to their heart's content without fearing a competitor's disenshittification products. Raise the price of ink all you want, because you've figured out how to criminalize generic ink cartridges:
That's a lesson Spotify took to heart. Aaaallll the way back in 2022, Spotify started selling $90 "Car Thing" tablets - little car-vent-mounted gadgets that made it slightly easier to connect your car stereo to your Spotify account. Now that a suitable interval has gone by, Spotify has decided to remotely brick every one of these solid-state devices, no later than December of 2024:
Now, this may seem like a loss to all those Car Thing owners, who are out $90. But consider this: our descendants are *gaining* thousands of pieces of immortal, infinitely toxic e-waste.
So there's that.
Then there's this: Jason Koebler just published a breakdown of a leaked sSamsung repair contract on 404 Media, revealing how Samsung requires its "independent" repair partners to trick you, abuse you, spy on you, and literally destroy your phone:
First: every time you bring a phone to an independent Samsung repair shop, the company has 24 hours to notify Samsung, providing your name, email, phone number, address, the IMEI of your phone, your warranty status and complaint.
Then, the technician is required to inspect your device for any evidence that you have had it serviced by unauthorized technicians or fixed with third-party replacement parts. If they believe you have failed to act in accord with Samsung's shareholders' interests, the technician is required to *immediately destroy your phone* and notify Samsung.
(This is radioactively illegal, and has been since 1975, when Congress passed the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which protects your right to use third-party parts:)
Why does Samsung do this? They can't help themselves. It's in their nature.

Hey I’m new on tumblr and I’m having fun so far so I thought I would contribute! This is just something that I have been thinking about a lot lately and so I wrote a list down for my own sake and maybe it can help somebody else too. Basically I’ve got a list of things that help with my chronic pain and hyper mobile elhers danlos syndrome as a young adult/teenager who works and attends school full time while doing extracurriculars. Im also neurodivergent so some of these things are just general sensory and regulation things.
- Good insoles for high arches (helps foot and hip pain while at work)
- Boots with good ankle support and a little heal for additional arch support
- Compression wrist gloves (soooo good for typing pains)
- This is one that is alot harder to control but a comfortable car if you drive is a life saver. Even just getting seat attachments that have lower back support will help a lot
- A comfortable mattress pad helps so much with sleep and waking up less sore
- A massage gun for working out muscle knots helps a whole lot too
- This is less a gadget and more advice but telling people you need to sit down has actually changed my life. I sit down when I need to at my exclusively standing job because I talked to my boss and received an accommodation. Even if you’re undiagnosed but you have chronic pain I would still give this a try.
- CBD salve for aching muscles
- Overall wearing comfortable clothes is so helpful. It’s good for when I don’t have the energy to regulate myself through being In Pain and also uncomfortable clothes. I love long skirts and sweaters mostly because they are comfortable, movable, and keep me warm (or cool depending on the skirt and sweater)
- heating packs and Ice packs
- Electrolyte drink powder things. They help me stay hydrated and my muscles cramp a lot less when I’m well hydrated
- Epson salt bathes
- This is so subtle and weird but contacts rather than glasses because I don’t have to keep my face flexed and posed in order to keep my glasses up.
- Hip or thigh bag like a Fanny pack or a motorcycle riding bag!!! Helps so much with shoulder pain!
- I use an Xbox controller for all my gaming even on computer because it’s so much easier to grip and control than a keyboard.
- the last thing is blackout curtains. I don’t have any but I have friends who do and I sleep 10/10 with those baby’s pulled shut
Anyways that’s my guide to not dying with eds!! Obviously my mobility and pain level is unique and some people need different and more extensive mobility and pain management strategies than I do, but these things help a lot for a mostly mobile girl, who just has some pain!!

oh shit, what kind of receipt printer do you have? do any fun stuff with it?
it's an epson tm-t88iir pretty basic thermal receipt printer, got it from a dumpster (what a suprise lol)
mostly just use it to quickly print out text files so i can look at them without needing a screen. it fully supports monochrome graphics, so you can also just use any font, but the built in text only font is ridiculously fast. i know i've posted about it on here before but apparently i never tagged anything so i can't find it now. only thing i could find is this picture where i printed config.sys from os/2 and didn't anticipate it being five feet long

Is blogging still relevant in the age of TikToks and Instagram?
Hi, it’s blondietalks here! On this week of my Digital Communities thread, I will be exploring the topic of blogging and its relevance in the current Internet atmosphere.
In my opinion, blogging is still relevant in some ways. However, it is incomparable to the relevance of TikTok and Instagram as the public spheres on these platforms are getting more engagement by the day.
The Pilot episode of the Internet: Blogging
Blogging was the foundation of the rise of the Internet. Blog websites – formerly known as weblogs, created the first public sphere for people all over the world to come together online. Before blogging, traditional websites that were set up by big companies did not allow a two-way communication system for the readers to interact with (Duermyer 2022). Blogs have become a public sphere by allowing equal participation for the users and the sharing of public opinion.
Knowing this it is no surprise that a large chunk of users still use the Internet to blog as their way to embody their online presence. Being a part of the blogging community – for example, being a member of a subgroup on Reddit – gives people a sense of community and support from the peers whom they interact with. In all its glory, people still blog because there are others who still demand for it and engage with it, in turn making it somewhat relevant.
The Relevance of Blogging
When people search on Google “why does my Epson printer won’t go online”, they most likely wouldn’t want to watch a whole video explaining why. This is where blog posts come in handy when people are searching for content that they can glance through quickly. Blog posts are still mainly the first result that appears when you search for a topic on Google. The Google algorithm that prevails blog websites on their platform is what keeps these blogs around.
Some people turn to blogging because it gives them a sense of anonymity. For people outside of my circle, you wouldn’t know who I am writing this blog post on Tumblr. People feel more comfortable writing their thoughts online instead of recording a video of themselves talking on media-based platforms. Based on an article on BBC (2021), online anonymity helps people to openly speak up about their concerns while protecting their privacy. Using platforms that focus on pieces of writing instead of media that might expose their identity allows the participation of anonymous users.
Blogging vs. TikTok and Instagram
So how does blogging fit in the current rise of TikTok and Instagram?
Blogs are getting less engagement these days because people are more attracted to fast-paced content. As the attention span of social media users get shorter and shorter, content that are digestible and easy to follow will get the engagement that they strive for.
An example of how Instagram can be used to capture the attention of social media users is the phenomenon of spreading political and environmental education with the use of infographics. Instead of reading through lengthy blogs about a chosen topic, resourceful accounts such as the Instagram account below make information more digestible and attainable for people.
Tumblr media
@/impact on Instagram posting an infographic about the history of slavery. Link: https://www.instagram.com/p/CwS5HGGu1wH/?hl=en&img_index=1
People also prefer TikTok and Instagram over blog websites because of the intelligent algorithms that these applications offer. These platforms can learn a user’s interest just by their engagement and activity on the application. According to Huang (2022), generation Z are using TikTok as their search engine because of its powerful algorithm that makes searching for information more convenient. TikTok is constantly learning the user’s behaviour and presenting them with content that is in their favour.
Video-based platforms give people an enriched experience with visual stimulation compared to blog websites. Based on Huang (2022), a TikTok user stated that a restaurant review on the application feels more genuine based on watching the reviewer’s facial expressions. People use TikTok to obtain product and establishment reviews because they can observe it first-hand through video recording.
The conclusion
So, in conclusion, just because blogging is not trending through the charts anymore, that doesn't mean that it’s completely irrelevant. I believe that blogging is still relevant as ever because people will go back and forth between platforms and in ways of expressing themselves on the Internet. Some days they feel like hopping onto TikTok trends – and another day they might write up their opinion on Tumblr under a hashtag that no one else is reading through.
That's all for this week, catch up with you guys soon :)

Heya! I'm just wondering, did you ever end up finding a solution to all your printer problems?
SORRY I MEANT SCANNER NOT PRINTER LOL
Yes, I did! It turns out that my scanner, the Epson Perfection V600, requires a driver (a type of software) from the manufacturer to work. This driver is required even for third-party scanning software like Vuescan (which is what I use).
Despite the V600 still being a product that is actively sold by Epson, they have not updated the driver for Macs since like fucking 2021. What's even worse is that on the page they make it sound like the driver was only updated a few months ago when it really hasn't been. I was only able to discover this problem thanks to a helpful user on the Apple forums.
Because the V600 is such a nice scanner and I haven't been able to find anything remotely of its quality for a reasonable price, I'm currently using my old laptop from like 2015 to use the scanner. I just dump all the scans onto a flashdrive and transfer them to my main computer for editing/storage.
It's honestly indefensible that Epson has stopped supporting Macs despite still actively selling this model of scanner. Like if you know that you're gonna not support scanners after a few years, it's really scummy to make them only able to function with a driver from you that even third party software needs. This is planned obsolescence in action and like the ten billionth reason why capitalism sucks lmao
So yeah, if you use a Mac, I can't in good conscience recommend the V600 to you even though it's an amazing scanner. I have no idea if this also applies to Windows; I DO know, however, that Windows also requires the driver, but I'm assuming that driver is still being updated. This is also just yet another case of Mac users being left in the dust by software developers tbh.

Linux Laptop Install 2
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish).
Ubuntu wiki link:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ubuntu
After it had installed, I checked for any outstanding system updates and then I configured Ubuntu's personalisation as follows: - Set my theme colour to Blue - Change the system theme to use the Dark theme - Changed the default position of the dock ‘left’ to ‘bottom’ of screen. - Set a desktop background
I have also set the dock to Auto-hide when windows overlap it to save workspace size.
I downloaded and installed Google Chrome and installed a number of apps through the Ubuntu SNAP store, these include: GIMP VLC Media Player For more information on SNAP see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snap_(software) I will install more apps through the Ubuntu Store as I find out more about what's available. I found this laptop's performance has dramatically improved compared with Windows 10.
However the Bluetooth and the camera don't work properly due to hardware issues which were there before.
I connected the Epson printer to the Ubuntu laptop and printed a test page successfully.
See the printer session and test page in post below.
Also, the laptop has a maximum display resolution of 1366x768 pixels making it quite restricted when moving and spacing all of the windows on-screen.
The muti-media function keys on the laptop work perfectly with Ubuntu.
These include:
Search, Brightness, project, touchpad, media playback & volume controls.
I really like the 'Eye of GNOME' Image Viewer that comes with this distribution.
Wiki link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_of_GNOME
I like its simple yet functional user interface, how snappy it feels to use, its support for SVGs (Scalable Vector Graphics) and transparent images.
The file manager is called GNOME Files (previously Nautilus).
I played with LibreOffice Impress and edited some pictures in GIMP.
I also tested a 4K YouTube video which played flawlessly on the laptop as shown in the Activity Monitor!
The GNOME Disks utility and File Systems tab.
In the future I might try installing other Linux distributions to test.

2023.6.26 ~ foobar2000
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
ASIO Support ( foo_out_asio ) : 2.1.2(旧版)
Super Audio Decoder ( foo_input_asio ) : 1.2.6(旧版)
DSD Processor ( foo_dsd_processor ) : 1.1.4(旧版)

#as an epsonhead can confirm: get the brother#unless you already know why it wont work for you a brother laser printer will work for you just fine#and by that I mean if you're looking at a printer and saying but will it do this#then your use case is distinct enough to seek out a better match lol (my tags)
ok fuck it I actually wanna use this as an excuse to talk about printing for a bit. can we talk about printing? lets talk about printing
printing is. whooo. printing is a lot of different things, and even if we narrow it down to "a user using their own personal computer and their own personal computer to print a document," that's still not specific enough to say anything really useful -- but it's also about the point where what is useful diverges.
when conceptualizing a document, many people think of a document on a computer as a means of storing the words they're saying and the way they want to present it. To that end, a printer needs to be a device that can take the presentation of information, recontextualize it into operations, and reliably reproduce those operations. And so, modern printers typically expect a description of they page they need to print in an abstract Page Description Language, with general instructions for how the page would look. It receives it, processes it with its little computer, and translates it into a series of instructions to give to its print hardware.
but.
what a datum encodes is not always clearly defined? like, is the data you're trying to send when you tell your printer " " a space, a blank spot on the page, the number 32, an emoji, what? There are standards for information interchange such as Unicode that makes this a lot easier, but I bring this up to point out that most people who conceptualize documents as in the paragraph above do so having had their use case cultivated by What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSIWYG) word processor design; since an average user is expecting to Get What They See, it doesn't matter as much if " " is a space or blank background. But the way you describe those for a page is completely different, and so the preprocessing of the page into a page description language takes some consideration. What's more, if a different printer processes the same data in a different way, regardless of what Microsoft Word developers do, what you see will never be what you get.
I never, never liked printing.... until a couple years ago, I got my hands on an epson POS printer, and the world's beauty opened up to me. Serial printers are obscenely easy to cut out the middle man on; if you decide you don't want to use a page description language, most of the time you can find a reference for the printer command language that it implements and just write data to your serial port to control it directly. It takes the "what does this datum actually encode" confusion away and instead feels more like you are having a conversation with a piece of hardware about how it works and how it operates. Instead of saying "ok, I have this ephemeral representation of conceptually what I want my page to look like, now I pray to god that you can fuckin make it so," you're emboldened and enabled to take direct control of an artistic medium and use it as another tool in your repertoire.
If you want quick setup, easy use, clean printing, and good WYSIWYG editor support, none of this matters a toss to you; it just means some printers are kinda donk and some printers are so easy you don't notice them. and if that's you, take that advice above. But if you read any of this and said now hang on. what if printing on computers didn't suck? I recommend a multifunctional POS printer for the artistic applications alone, and feel free to dm me if you want any of my personal python modules I've been using to play with mine lol
