Erwin stares into the faint ripples of the white curtain beside his table. A sturdy round thing, obviously better suited for card-playing than sitting and sipping tea, but… Levi takes no luxuries it seems, even as Captain, even knowing Erwin would be staying with him while he recovered from his flu, as if he deserved no better.
Oh, Levi.
He quickly reminds himself of their compromise before he gets greedy. Levi is absurdly fussy about getting help in the most basic sense, but at the same time it was a forgone conclusion.
Levi had to give in yesterday when he was several hours late to breakfast, unable to explain himself because he had lost his voice. The flu never hits Levi until it does, and it hits him hard.
It’s so rare for him to get sick that Erwin is tense even now, like a spring wound up tight and waiting for a sneeze to set him off.
It's unsettling to see Levi deeply sleep. He's mostly slept through today, but that's the medicine doing its work.
He glances back towards the twin bed where Levi is resting on his back. A hairband is propped behind his ears to keep his bangs clear of his sweaty forehead; his cheeks are the color of apples.
He really deserves a nicer mattress… but part of the compromise was staying in Levi’s old room to keep Erwin’s quarters free of germs. If Erwin wanted to stew in them, that was his prerogative, Levi had retorted—and yes, it was.
But maybe he can haggle when Levi starts feeling better.
Erwin returns to his parchment.
“Mm…”
Erwin side-glances at Levi. He hasn’t woken up, but his shoulders hunch and ripple with a feverish shiver. The mattress cries a tiny squeak as he rolls over, onto his side so Erwin can see the misery deeply etched into his face.
His gaze lingers, wondering if he should risk waking Levi to check his temperature again. (It wouldn’t be on purpose.) His face is glossy, deepened to a beet-red. He sniffles noisily. A few untamed strands have escaped the hairband and cling to his temple like glue.
So finishing up this urgent piece of work, or going to Levi?
He goes to scoot out in time for Levi to whine again. With a little tensing up.
“Momma…” he murmurs. “M-M…”
His nails sink into the loose cotton by his knee. For a second he doesn’t even know what to think, for Levi, indentured to the pain under his breath. It screams its weight, which comes so much heavier by some place in childhood. A feeble call so acrid with pain in Levi’s low tone—if they knew of Levi—is enough to shatter a man’s heart.
“Momma.” He sounds shaky now.
Erwin stands up like a paralysis had seized his body up until now and goes over, sitting by Levi’s chest. He goes to adjust the hairband neatly, and wipe his neck and forehead of sweat with a washcloth set aside. Levi keeps mumbling devoid of meaning, but it all means one word, and Erwin knows it. When his nose starts to run and a tear squeezes out from Levi's tightly shut eyes, he grabs a clean handkerchief (softer on his skin) and starts hushing gently.
"You're dreaming, my love. It's only a dream now."
"Mm-omma. Mommgmomm momma geddup..."
"Shhh..." He swallows and runs his fingers slowly through Levi's hair. It's soft, almost painfully so, for some reason now.
"Momma," he cries.
He's sleeping too deeply. Erwin strokes his hair for now, hoping he'll settle.

The Blue by bowowline
E | 176.1K | 14/14 | Hitman Levi, AU modern setting, Slowburn, Smut
“Look, kid. Don’t listen to what Uri says, you hear?” Kenny combs his hair with his hand, although there’s not a single strand out of place. “Don’t ever listen to him. You only have one kinda people you have to listen to. You know that, yes? Who do you listen to? Tell me,” he orders, kind of frantic.
“I only listen to the Family,” Levi says absently.
As a child, Levi refused to finish a job. He has not made one blunder after that. Twenty years later, fate catches up to him again.
Birds of Paradise by obiwhat12
No rating (check tags) | 94.9K | 14/14 | Hurt/Comfort, Sick Levi, Domestic Fluff, PTSD
On an expedition gone awry, Erwin and Levi find themselves stranded in the forest, fighting for their lives. They are graced with no other option except to put their faith in one another, despite their vast differences.
Under the same bright stars, they discover a new kind of consolation in each other that neither has known before.
In These Fallen Leaves by masksarehot
E | 210.2K | 32/32 | Temporary Character Death, Post-Canon, Hurt/Comfort, Smut
[Post-Basement canon-divergent AU] Ten years after the end of the war, Levi, still heartbroken over Erwin's death, is living out a quiet existence with a few Survey Corps survivors. But signs are beginning to surface that Erwin is not truly dead, and they're getting too vivid to ignore...
This fic explores (canon-divergent) choices that the survivors made after Erwin's death and their consequences for the world. It's also about healing, and Erwin and Levi learning to put words to things that have always been unspoken between them. And beneath it all are the paths, whispering to them that the fate of Paradis still rests upon their shoulders...

E | 223.6K | 25/25 | AU fencing, Slowburn, Smut
Meeting people in New York City is hard. When Erwin’s last good friend moves away for greener pastures, he joins the local fencing club in his Upper East Side neighborhood in hopes of rekindling both an old hobby, and his wilting social life.
-OR-
The newest member of Levi's fencing club has it all it all-- money, a highly successful career, overbearingly good looks. Levi doesn't have any of that. But he sure as hell wants Erwin Smith anyway.
The Means by calacreda
E | 130.2K | 16/16 | Post-ACWNR, Pre-AOT, Prostitution, Slowburn
'He hears him say “Do not tell a soul, Levi” and wants to laugh. Tell anyone? To what end? So that others have the images that Levi now has running through his head; of grabbing hands and harness marks, hard words and soft lips, of lies upon lies upon lies in a desperate attempt to get to the truth?'
Levi begins to notice Erwin leaving HQ alone and not returning until the dead of night.
Slow-burn, pre-show Eruri.
He Chose Titans by masksarehot
E | 486.1K | 43/43 | Semi-Canon Prequel, Truama, Fluff, Smut
Erwin swore he would never again be distracted from his fight against the titans, but when an unexpected bond begins to form with Levi, he must decide whether he will follow his heart or his head.

Dresden by hedera_helix (one of my all time favs)
M | 334.4K | 26/26 | AU, Historial, WWII
When Levi acquired his false identification he knew that the key to survival would be to stay unnoticed and to contain the bitterness and anger he feels inside himself. As the tides of war start to turn against Germany, however, Levi finds himself in a position to make a choice.

France, 1986 - The last time Erwin was in Paris, he had it all. Youth, love, success, and his place in some of the most prestigious orchestras of the world. His cello had been his faithful companion through it all, and many said Erwin was the most talented cellist of his time. With such a bright future, it was easy to pretend everything was perfect.
But a lot had changed in ten years.
Now, all he had left were ghosts in his shadows, blurred memories of what used to be, and a body broken beyond repair.
He hoped going back to where it all started would be enough to recover what he’d lost: his ability to hold a cello, to feel, to love. He’d been wrong so far. But there may be another soul just as broken as his, someone who was also wandering in search of their own missing pieces.

It's been twenty years in the army, and Levi is finally home--retired, bored, directionless. The world has moved on without him, including his friend Erwin. He struggles to learn to adjust, to deal with his nightmares, to flourish in a world he's never understood, only to find that Erwin is dealing with the same thing.

English speaking fanfiction writers, please help the non-english speaking community:
This time I wanted to talk about something slightly different. As I've said in some of my previous posts, I've been reading fanfiction for more than 10 years and I've written fanfiction as well in my mother language.
About five years ago I started reading fanfiction in English as well because some of my favorite fandoms don't have much content in my main language.
About two years ago I attempted to write in English and it took me a lot of time and a bunch of Google searches but ultimately I liked the result.
However, I need help.
When you are writing in you mother language you're perfectly aware of what things are cringey and which ones aren't. When you're writing in your second language however, it becomes difficult to perceive which words or expressions sound unnatural, cringey, bad or tacky.
For example: when writing NSFW scenes, what are some words that are sound off while talking about female and male genitalia (lol) and which ones sound better?
This is just an example, but yeah I would like to have some help with that.
(IM GONNA TAG SOME OF MY FANDOMS TO REACH MORE PEOPLE, PLEASE DON'T GET MAD AT ME)

Pandora’s box. That was what Moblit and Hange were currently trying to pry open from you with their bare hands. When you agreed to take a late lunch with Moblit, you hadn’t realized that your chicken caesar wrap would be accompanied with a side of interrogation. All lighthearted and well-intentioned, but you’ve been unsurprisingly irritable lately. Your newly realized feelings for Levi and Erwin left you emotionally drained and physically tense. Not that it was anyone else’s fault but your own. Moblit, though, was not helping the situation. And Hange’s erratic commentary was truly the cherry on top.
“I’m just saying you all seem awfully close,” Moblit said. He was teasing you and it was clear, but you couldn’t help but bristle at his words.
“Friends fuck sometimes and that’s okay,” Hange added, thoughtful and serious, which made your jaw drop and your food bitter in your mouth.
“Hange, please,” you said, pushing your half-eaten wrap to the side and taking a sip of your iced hibiscus tea instead. “We’re not,” your lips refused to fix around the word fuck out loud, “sleeping together.”
“So then what are you three doing together all the time?” Moblit asked innocently. The innocence was a mere facade, though, since you knew he was simply trying to fish for information.
“Hanging out. Y’know, like we are, right now.”
“Right,” he said unconvinced. “So you expect us all to believe you’re not dating?”
“Yes, exactly that. Because it’s not a belief if it’s a fact,” you bit out, your eyes narrowing at him when he smiled and shrugged.
“So you and Erwin are just hanging out as friends this Saturday?”
“How the hell do you even know about that?!” You whispered loudly, leaning towards him and snatching a potato wedge from his plate as payment for your distress. Levi had asked a favor of you yesterday when he had to take a last minute shift for Saturday since one of his regular patients needed an emergency session. Erwin’s father and his fiancee signed up for a dance lesson for their upcoming wedding and invited Erwin and Levi to join them. But given Levi’s schedule change, he asked you to join them in his place. You said yes (obviously) because you said yes to all of their requests, even if it was at your own emotional expense.
“Levi told me,” Hange said casually. “He only feels a little bad over it because he hates dancing.”
“Of course he did and of course he does,” you responded grumpily as you slouched back in your seat and looked out the window you were seated beside. “This is just a favor anyway, nothing else.”
“Not a date,” Moblit nodded, as if he was agreeing with you when in actuality he was pressing you further.
“Do you think my first date with someone would be a double date with his dad and his dad’s fiancee?”
“Sounds romantic enough to me,” he grinned, swiping the uneaten half of your wrap and taking a large bite in retaliation for the wedge you stole. You stared at him for a minute, observing the tiny moments of intimacy he always shared with Hange. The light grazing of his fingers on the back of their neck or the way they always made sure he had enough to drink in his cup. It seemed so easy. Fluid. Envy turned in your gut and it was only worsened by the knowledge of knowing your friends bore witness to your complicated relationship with Levi and Erwin, but knew you couldn’t do anything about it.
“I don’t see what your point is,” you mumbled, glancing away from them again as Hange took a napkin and cleaned the corner of Moblit’s mouth that had a smear of caesar dressing left there aggressively. You fought a disgusted sneer at the softness between them to not come off as bitter. Which you definitely were.
“My point is, if it sounds like dating and it looks like dating,” he said it slowly as if you were beyond the capability of comprehension. “It’s dating.”
“Well maybe you should break it to your buddies that according to you they have a girlfriend,” you said with an annoyed eye roll. “Because as far as I know I am their neighbor who also happened to turn into a friend.”
“I hope you don’t take this the wrong way,” Hange started, leaning forward with their elbows on the table. “But we’ve known Levi and Erwin for a long time and all we’re trying to say is it’s worth a conversation.”
“What conversation is there to be had?” You whined in exasperation. The memory of your almost kiss with Levi popped into your mind without your consent, the skin of your neck and chest warming up at the thought. That was a conversation that definitely needed to be had, but it had already been weeks since that night and neither of you made a move to bring it up. And with all your dinners together since then another incident like that hadn’t happened again. So, you forced it from your mind and refused to dwell on something that may have meant nothing at all.
“The one regarding your feelings,” Moblit emphasized.
“What feelings?” You said stubbornly, arms crossing and an agitated huff released from your lips. You were starting to hate how easy it was for Moblit to read you. He had an uncanny ability of seeing straight through you. His intuition was nearly always right, especially when it came to the sticky complication of the emotions you swore you hid quite well.
“You’re hopeless,” Moblit shook his head, placing your wrap back on your plate with a large chunk missing. Thankfully, they dropped the topic after that. But your mind couldn’t help but toss the concept around in your head for the rest of the day.
They made it sound so simple. So normal. As if you entering an already established relationship with two men wasn’t odd or complicated. And it wasn’t as if you were any sort of advocate for traditional relationships. It was just something you never considered. A relationship with one man nearly broke you in two. And almost a year later, you were still reeling from the aftermath. It was hard enough grappling with the fact that you were falling in love with two people at the same time. You recognized long ago that you had the capacity for it. Loving people with your whole being was not a foreign concept to you. But extending that love, acting on that love, that you held for Levi and Erwin seemed crazy in a way that you couldn’t imagine.
If one man had the capability to crack your soul in half so deeply the damage seemed irreparable, you could not fathom giving your heart away to two. Surely, the loss of their friendship alone would leave you raw and exposed. It would reverse all the work you had done this far. And you were afraid of the person you would become if you faced another loss like that. You felt jaded and cynical enough. If you handed your heart over to them, only for it to be returned in pieces seemed like a fruitless endeavor. Stupid, even.
So you kept it exactly where it was. In the center of your chest with a stitched crack down the middle.
Tumblr media
“Erwin, we’re going to be late,” you called for him from his doorway. He was adamant on finding his black t-shirt, which you didn’t realize was even a remotely big deal. But, apparently it was and you had to be at the dance studio by 5pm. Currently, it was 4:36pm and it was a 20 minute drive.
“Just a second! I found it,” he yelled back excitedly and you couldn’t hold back your loud sigh because you really did hate being late to things like this. It always made you anxious. Another minute passed as you began to tap your heeled foot against the concrete step outside his door because you were convinced that if you stepped inside he wouldn’t feel your obvious sense of urgency.
“Erwin!” You shouted again, pulling your phone out of your purse to double check the time.
“I’m coming,” he rounded the corner breathlessly, black shirt fitted around his torso with a zip up slung over his shoulder since it was still chilly outside this early in the new spring season.
“You looked fine before,” you complained, grabbing his forearm and tugging him outside when he was close enough. “I don’t know why you needed to change.”
He locked the door behind himself, bounding down the steps to meet you at the gate. His hand found the small of your back then as he guided the two of you to his car, “I wanted to match.”
He grinned down at you with pleasant sincerity. As if matching with you was a necessity to this particular outing, and if he didn’t he would’ve ruined the entire thing. “You’re kidding.”
“Nope,” he smiled again and opened the door for you. “What’s the point in going to a couples dance class if we don’t match?”
Your jaw ticked at the word couple, your muscles spasming in your lower back when his hand disappeared and left you cold and tense. He was excited, but you could sense his nervous energy the moment you were in the car and driving towards your destination. This wouldn’t be his first time meeting his father’s fiancee, but it was still evident that he struggled with the idea of his dad getting remarried. And in typical Erwin fashion he played everything off as if it didn’t truly bother him. But knowing him for almost a year now, you could sense the tiny cracks in his facade. The fractures in his usually ebullient personality were starting to become more and more apparent. You wanted him to feel comfortable in your presence. And at present his nerves were crackling off of him like sparklers in the hands of a child on new year’s eve.
“Are you nervous?” You asked, eyes tracking a couple on the sidewalk beside the car as they walked their dog.
“About?” His tone was hesitant, like he could sense you calling him out on his anxious energy. But instead of confronting him like Levi probably would have, you allowed his feign on indifference to steer your conversation.
“Stepping on my toes,” you said with a teasing smile at him. He stopped at a red light, turning to grin at you–teeth white and smile blinding.
“Oh sweetheart,” he replied in playful condescension, “I’m a terrific dancer.”
“We’ll have to see about that,” you responded snidely, expression unconvinced as you turned to look at him just as the light turned green. He released a loud laugh, his hand moving from the gear shift and hovering above your knee for a second. You were curious as to what he was about to do, your thigh tensing involuntarily before his hand landed on your knee and he squeezed. Your breath was held tightly in your chest, your cheeks growing warmer (a constant, uncontrollable reaction you were becoming increasingly more irritated by), and when his hand didn’t move for the rest of the drive every attempt you made at relaxing only made the discomfort fester more beneath your skin.
The studio was small and on the second floor of a renovated townhome with a cute bookstore on the first floor. On one side of the room were floor to ceiling windows with a perfect view of the park that was just across the street. The lights were golden and dimmed to create an intimate and private atmosphere. Before you entered the studio, your short heels clicking satisfyingly against the glossed wooden floor panels, Erwin’s phone rang and he stepped back out, leaving you to greet the instructors alone.
They were an older couple with thick accents that you could only attribute to an eastern European country, but you weren’t sure which one.
“Hello, pretty,” the woman greeted you first, leaning over to press her cheek against yours. She was beaming at you, her eyes sparkling with excitement and you couldn’t stop the sheepish smile from stretching your lips in response. Her husband, you assumed, extended his hand to you in a warm handshake.
You heard Erwin finally walk in behind you again, tugging on your purse to slip his phone inside before he said, “Looks like it’s just you and me. That was my dad and he said he can’t make it.”
“Is everything ok?” You said with a note of worry, but also the itchy feeling of anxiety stirred in your chest because this truly was a date now. Whether you wanted to admit that or not.
“Yeah, he’s okay. I refused to ask what he was up to considering the fact that he was out of breath.” He shivered at the thought, and you laughed at the grossed out look on his face.
“I don’t blame you,” you said, stepping aside so the instructors could introduce themselves. You had to suppress an eye roll when Erwin kissed the older woman on the cheek and she pulled away blushing. Someone had to be immune to his charms and it was unfortunate that it wasn’t you.
“You two make such a beautiful couple,” the lady said warmly as she led Erwin further into the room and you saw his face light up in the mirror that was parallel to you.
“Oh, we’re n-”you started, but was swiftly interrupted by Erwin’s appreciative, “thank you.”
Maybe it was easier to indulge rather than explain in a roundabout way to strangers that you weren’t actually together. And that he actually had a boyfriend. Both of which you spend an alarming amount of time with.
“If it sounds like dating and it looks like dating. It’s dating.”
Moblit’s words clanged around your skull like a ping pong ball gone rogue. The sharp sounds rang in your ears and you were dumbly frozen in place until Erwin turned towards you with an outstretched hand and a teasing, “are we gonna dance or are you too worried about stepping on my toes?”
Embarrassingly enough, you did step on Erwin’s toes. Not because you lacked the coordination or balance or rhythm, but because you were stiff as a board. He was impossibly close to you. One hand on the small of your back applied enough pressure to keep your bodies pressed together while his other hand held onto yours securely. It was a simple waltz, but you couldn’t concentrate on anything besides the way his firm body felt pressed up against the softness of yours.
Finally, when you were awarded a short break as the instructors went over to choose another song, you all but pushed Erwin off of you so that you could inhale a breath that wasn’t stained with the smell of his cologne. He was smiling as if he was thoroughly enjoying himself. And looking at you as if he was privy to some sort of damning information about you.
“You need to loosen up,” he said while stepping back into your space, his hands swiftly finding your shoulders and massaging the very present tension there. You sighed, the knot that settled near your neck forever ago being worked out by his attentive and strong fingers. “You know Levi can massage this out for you,” he added when he felt the obvious discomfort in your shoulders.
“I’m not gonna bother him with that,” you shrugged Erwin off as you said it, inhaling another steadying breath.
“It wouldn’t be a bother,” he chuckled, “we have a massage table in the guest room for a reason.”
You had never stepped foot in their guest room so that came as a surprise. “I’ll think about it,” you said, waving off the suggestion because downright refusing would only trigger his more persistent side.
“Ok! Back to positions,” the woman called out, hands clapping together giddily. You recognized the song immediately. The first sounds of My All by Mariah Carey delicately filled the room and your spine tensed once again. You stopped yourself from groaning because out of all the songs this one had all the romantic yearning you could possibly imagine. And with Erwin’s hands on you again and your chest firmly secured against his, you had to close your eyes to steady the racing of your heart that you were sure he could feel pounding against his rib cage.
“Relax,” he leaned over and whispered in your ear, his lips dangerously close to touching the shell of your ear as he squeezed your hand in an attempt to be reassuring. “Stop concentrating and let me lead you.”
You allowed your forehead to fall to his chest and swallowed down the apprehension that wasn’t allowing you to just enjoy the moment. Regardless of what Moblit said or how you felt for Erwin or Levi, you shouldn’t ruin the fragments of familiarity and intimacy offered by them. Whether it was their strange way of extending friendship or something much more complicated, you took it. You let Erwin lead you in a waltz. You relaxed your shoulders and when you took one last breath and looked up at him he was staring down at you with affection. Maybe tonight you would pretend– just as he had when you stepped in the room– that you really were a couple. That tonight instead of going home to a bed alone, you would feel the safety of two bodies beside you. In an ideal world it would be that simple.
But reality had a sick way of reminding you that nothing was ever that simple. But a girl could dream.

“Oh my god, look!” You said as you made your way to the car. There was a flower beginning to bloom right beside a tree. And even though snow hadn’t fallen in weeks, the dreadful chill persisted. And while the sun set hours later, spring had yet to reveal herself to you.
Erwin stopped suddenly beside you, his arm bumping into your back from the abruptness of it. You were pointing excitedly at the flower. It was a tiny little thing with white petals. Nothing worth noting, really, but the stranger of hope began to introduce herself to you again. It was odd how something so seemingly insignificant made your heart grow in your chest.
“Oh would you look at that,” he said, following the line of your finger with his eyes, “Levi’s gonna be happy about this. He’s been grumbling about his plants for the last month.”
“It’s how he relieves his stress,” you teased, smiling at the memory of Levi fussing over his herbs that sat in the kitchen window and cursing winter for overstaying its welcome.
You heard Erwin scoff out a laugh beside you while unlocking the car as you approached. “I, personally, could think of far better ways to relieve stress,” he said as he reached around your shoulder to open the passenger side door for you. There was far more suggestion in his tone than you appreciated. And with how close his voice was to your ear again, you couldn’t suppress the shiver that went straight down your spine and scattered frenetically across your skin.
The initiation of temptation had to be purposeful on his end. The lingering touches and over-indulgent words couldn’t be a coincidence and you were beginning to wonder if this was some game or if all three of you were treading across a tightrope that got thinner and thinner the further you balanced across. Someone was bound to fall first. And you were afraid it just might be you since you were barely hanging on as it was.
But the fear of breaking after such a long fall was what kept your core tight and your body forcing your feet to remain unsteady on the rope. You were starting to believe, though, that neither Erwin nor Levi had those same priorities. Especially when, as you were stepping into the vehicle, Erwin leaned over and pressed a chaste kiss to the side of your head. It was so unexpected that it gave you pause, your foot braced on the floor of the car as you whipped your head to face him. He was smirking at you expectantly, eagerly awaiting your reaction like he was trying to bait you into something.
And in your disheveled state most of the words you knew seemed to escape you. Yet, the only thing you could manage was a petulant, “leave that man and his hobbies alone. Don’t be nasty.”
His grin grew wildly into something wicked. Your stomach flipped and desire swirled around dangerously low in your gut. He nudged you into a seated position, your head bumping against the head rest before he grabbed the seatbelt and clicked it into place for you. When his face was merely a few inches from yours, his breath casting puffs of air across your lips, you were taken back to the evening on your couch with Levi. And you wondered if he knew what almost happened that night. But as much as you wanted to look up into his eyes for some sort of confirmation, they refused to stray from his lips.
“Fine,” you saw his lips shift around the word seductively, “but just know my idea of stress relief is much more fun.”
He pushed himself off the center console, ducking out of your door and then shutting it behind him. You were startled in a way you couldn’t really describe. Desire flowed through your veins like fear. Lust drove through your heart like anxiety. And it was the most conflicting set of emotions you have ever had the displeasure of feeling. Because now he wasn’t even being secretive about it.
And for the first time since befriending the neighborly couple, you were beginning to feel like you may be in over your head.
Tumblr media
“Ok,” you started as you strode into Moblit’s office at 8:06 am, exactly two minutes after you saw him enter the office. He barely had his things set down before you shut his door and closed the blind to the small window he had that overlooked the cubicles.
“What’s with the secrecy?” He said, a bit concerned, but mostly amused. He was still shrugging off his coat when you started to pace. Which you knew wasn’t the best look, but after your evening with Erwin and then stealthily avoiding them for the rest of the weekend to protect your sanity after what you overheard after he dropped you off at your door. You knew you weren’t crazy regardless of how you absolutely, positively felt crazy.
Erwin wouldn’t intentionally fuck his boyfriend loud enough for you to hear through the wall that separated your living room from their bedroom. He couldn’t possibly know you were even laying on your couch that night because you were too lazy to get up and drag your ass to bed because strangely enough the arches of your feet were sore from dancing in heels for an hour and a half. It had to be another coincidence. But you knew the mood Erwin was already in when you left the studio. He had reckless energy coursing through him the entire drive home. Even when you stopped to grab takeout on the way home, he still possessed that crackly, staticky spirit that had you shifting in your seat expectantly.
So, you could confidently assume that he was horny. Especially with the way he carried himself with a sense of emboldened carelessness. He kissed you again on your doorstep, this time on your cheek and narrowly missing your lips so much so he might as well have kissed them. So, it shouldn’t have come as a surprise when you were startled awake from a sleep you hadn’t realized you fell under to a thud. It was muffled and distant sounding. You knew it couldn’t have come from inside your apartment so you decided to ignore it and chalk it up to the sounds of the city. But then, as sleep threatened to pull you under again, you heard a groan and a creak. Realization flooded over you like a bucket of cold water. Goosebumps rose on your skin in recognition of what was occurring on the other side of the wall and a fierce blush blossomed on your cheeks. Your whole body rising in temperature and that strange feeling returned to your gut.
The heels of your palms pressed into your eyes and you knew you should probably gather yourself and head to your bed. But when you heard another moan, this one longer and needier than the last, you struggled to come up with a good enough argument to actually get up. One that based itself on something other than this probably being morally wrong. Eavesdropping on your friends while they were clearly getting hot and heavy was not an appropriate way to end your evening, but the weight of your touch deprivation was burying you into the cushions beneath you. You couldn’t even remember the last time you touched yourself. With the chronic stress and anxiety that exhausted your body it was difficult to conjure up the energy to even get yourself off.
But this, this fervent desire that had rooted itself in your bones hours ago due to Erwin’s blatant teasing, was nearly suffocating you. Maybe you shouldn’t have allowed your hand to trail down your abdomen, smoothing over your sleepshirt and slipping hesitantly between your thighs. And you shouldn’t have matched the pace of your fingertips rubbing greedy circles against your clit with the way their headboard thumped against the wall. You muffled your own moans with the back of your free hand, merely mimicking what you knew to be Levi’s voice groaning alongside what you could only assume was Erwin fucking him.
Your imagination, as vivid as it was, was running away from you. The idea of Erwin and Levi together in any position you could pull from your own memory was sending a hurried flush over your skin. Lips on heated skin, hands kneading at reddened flesh, it was too much. You already knew how pretty Levi looked with rose-tinted cheeks and wine-stained lips, and you could nearly feel Erwin’s strong body cradling yours. Being held by him without the layers of thin clothing separating your sweat-dampened skin. It was surprising how close you were to finishing with only a few sticky strokes to your clit. The pent up sexual frustration evidently brought to its boiling point.
All you could hear, all that was replaying in your mind as you came over your own fingers was Levi whining out Erwin’s name in desperation. The sound of his release was obvious when Erwin could only respond with a “yes, Levi” and the pace of the headboard hitting the wall quickened for a few seconds before everything went silent.
You lied there in astonishment and shame. Your fingers wet with your own release and your body slightly sweaty from unexpected exertion. How were you going to face them again after that? When all you would be able to hear when they spoke to you was the gruffness of their moans and the noises they made as they came?
It would surely haunt your every conversation and interaction from now until forever.
“Are you gonna talk or would you prefer to burn a hole into the rug with your incessant pacing?”
Moblit’s voice startled you straight out of your memory. Your orientation returned to you once you remembered you were in Moblit’s office on the verge of a nervous breakdown instead of post-orgasm and spiraling out on your own couch after listening to your best friends have sex. When you met Moblit’s gaze, his amusement diminished in favor of true concern. Maybe you also looked just as crazy as you felt.
“I’m in big trouble,” you said, arms crossing and eyes averting to look out onto his view of the lake that was miles away but still visible through the spaces between the high rises.
“Legal? Do you owe someone money?” He said, hands leaning onto his desk and it should’ve sounded like a joke but he was being utterly serious.
“I don’t want to know why that was where your mind immediately went. Quite frankly, it scares me,” you said, expression a mixture of confusion and astoundment. “But no, I don’t owe anyone money. I just maybe haven’t been completely forthcoming about my current situation with Levi and Erwin.”
“You totally fucked, didn’t you?” He smirked at you like he knew it all along. Like you couldn’t possibly keep anything from him without him finding out in some way. Which should’ve agitated you more than it did, but you were too wrapped up in your mess to scold him over it.
“No!” You said louder than you intended, so you lowered your voice when you added, “we didn’t fuck. At this point, I think that would be the simpler situation.”
“I have a feeling you’re being a little dramatic,” he said softly, again acting as if having a threesome with your two closest friends who were in a years long relationship didn’t have the potential to ruin things to an atomic degree.
“Ugh,” you sighed, deciding to sit down in one of the chairs in front of his desk. “A couple of weeks ago Levi and I almost kissed, and up until my date on Saturday with Erwin I was under the impression that he didn’t know about that given the fact that Levi and I have pretended it never happened. We were also high so I kinda thought he didn’t remember it.”
So it was a date,” Moblit grinned, leaning back comfortably in his office chair as he looked directly at you.
“Can you believe that his dad canceled on us at the last minute?” You complained, throwing your hands up in exasperation. “So, yes it very much felt like a fucking date. And it really messed with my head, especially because Erwin was being so…”
You allowed the sentence to hang there, not sure how to really describe Erwin’s behavior towards you that night. He was treating you like it was the early stages of a relationship. The unmistakable air of a date, the touching, the closeness. It was all so real and unplatonic-like. You groaned into your hands while your body fell deeper into the seat.
“What do I do?” You emphasized whinily, peering at Moblit’s smug face between the cracks in your fingers.
“Did Erwin make a move on you?” He asked simply, and you scrunched your face up in thought because the answer in your mind was yes, but the lines were blurry and you couldn’t see them clearly enough to come up with a straight answer.
“I mean, how would you define ‘making a move’?” You thought back to the kisses he left on your temple and cheek, which he has done before. And the way his hands never strayed far from your body, whether it was your waist or the small of your back or even when he rested it on your knee on the drive there. You thought of his reassuring words and how he put your seatbelt on for you once you left the dance lesson. Those all felt like moves, but they also all felt like Erwin.
And Erwin was handsy and clingy.
“You know exactly how I would define it,” he replied dumbly and you fought the eye roll that always followed you whenever you spoke with Moblit. You loved him, but weren’t always too fond of him calling you out on your bullshit.
“Fine, then yes, he was very,” you made weird grabby hands at Moblit, who frowned and tilted his head but seemed to understand what you were trying to convey.
“Did he kiss you?”
“Not exactly.”
“Not exactly?”
“He kissed me like right here,” you pointed to the corner of your mouth and refused to make eye contact with him. You felt so juvenile and ridiculous. This was so much harder than having a teenage crush. So much worse too.
And it was made even worse when you heard Moblit stifle a laugh. When you glared at him, he couldn’t suppress the cackle where it was currently lodged in his throat and slipped out in one absurd sound.
“You’re so annoying,” you grumbled as you rose to your feet, fully intent on trudging back to your office and hiding out there for the rest of the day.
“Wait,” he called after you, and you stubbornly turned around to face him again. “I’m gonna suggest something a little crazy… talk to them.”
“Why can’t you just let me be difficult?” You had to stop yourself from stomping one of your feet on the ground petulantly.
“Because this isn’t as difficult as you’re making it, I promise.”
You heard the earnestness in his voice. He truly believed that this thing between you, Levi, and Erwin would work out. And you weren’t sure if he was delusional or if you were oblivious. But the ache in your chest only ever subsided when you were with them. The feelings you harbored could be one-sided but as each day ended and another began that didn’t seem like the case. Fear gripped you, though, tightly around the neck, squeezing your vocal cords together and refusing you to utter a word about your love for them. Your very real, awful, tragic, beautiful love for them.
“What if I ruin it again?” You said barely above a whisper. You wanted to shrink into yourself. Nothing but raw insecurity ripped through you. “I can’t do that to myself again.”

Levi keeps dozing off. A gentle, absent unconsciousness without dreaming. One moment he catches a piece of dialogue from the movie playing on TV, but next he notices, the scene has entirely moved on. It's the only source of light in his and Erwin's living room, and in a wavering but constant sense it shines dully behind his eyelids.
Hange fell asleep on the floor, their head in Nimbus’s bed, their cat, with a weighted blanket resting on them. Levi lies on his side with a duvet of his own covering him. It’s hard to register they’re there again and again in his sleep-addled mind, with them a lump on the floor and blocked from view by the coffee table, but he always is distantly aware of Erwin sitting in the middle of the couch with Levi’s feet resting on his legs.
The only reason he would ever sleep this much in the first place is the blunt they all shared earlier. But that makes his sensations heightened too.
He stirs awake in a wandering way, only to feel an explosion of lust below his navel when he notices his thighs are spread apart now where he lays on his back, with one leg threatening to spill over the side of the couch if it weren't for Erwin's palm. Big. Easily wraps around the back of his thigh. His frame is too wide to fit him comfortably otherwise.
By the weight spread across his hips and thighs, Erwin's laying on his belly, pinning him down just due to their size difference. Something firm, at an angle, is rubbing against his hard shaft through a comfy layer of pajama pants.
He inhales swiftly at first, but keeps his whole body utterly relaxed. Daring to open his eyes, he discovers Erwin is hidden under the duvet. It's big enough to cover their king-sized bed, so it's more than big enough to hide Erwin and leave room to cover Levi's midriff.
He closes his eyes again with a sense of relief, and annoyance. This is why he can’t remember if he was imagining, or dreaming, about Erwin having sex with him. He can’t even remember the positions they were in, but it all makes sense now.
With this, he's relaxed enough to doze off again. He drifts, mind buzzing warmly while Erwin noses his dick over his clothes, kissing, faintly, the hot strip of skin exposed where his pants’ stretchy waistband ends, and his shirt shifted up a little in his sleep.
As far as he can really remember or process, everyone except Erwin is dead-asleep, Hange so much so, hidden by the coffee table, that their presence doesn’t occur to him once. What stands out the most, what Erwin’s doing to him feels good. The slow, distant friction adds an aching heat to his overall state of high and bliss without alarming him.
But it's heightened, heightened even more with the realization that Erwin started touching him while he was asleep.
They’ve done this before, and the echoes of memory alone of the orgasms Erwin gave him then make him throb, hard. He swallows, bites the inside of his cheek and drapes his arm over his eyes. He won’t tell him to stop.
Sometime between now and then, his thoughts dilute in a blank nothingness again. He’s completely serene.
The next time, he stirs as a large, firm palm grinds against his cock over his clothes. It's drawing up and down, rubbing the underside of his cock with each revolution.
Levi's arm—his now-sore arm that was draped over his eyes—drops to his mouth to stifle a soft moan. Erwin's going slow, but he's so horny, he's well and truly ruined his boxer shorts.
He furrows his brow, toes curling without his permission. He must’ve been squirming, because Erwin’s free hand is clutching his thigh tighter than he remembers before.
The distant pressure and heat makes him dizzy with desire, added—Levi inhales sharply—with the searing heat from his tongue drawing half-circles around his sharp hipbones.
It feels amazing when Erwin is in control of him like this.
Erwin's tongue glides, it strokes, up, down, following the v-shape below his navel.
If he opens his eyes and really squints, he can see Erwin’s head shifting under the cover.
Levi grinds his jaw as Erwin’s teeth knick his hipbone. His cock twitches under all that tight, firm friction.
Fuck...
The next time he dozes, he’s in and out in the span of seconds, barely, or it feels that way. He always becomes the deepest sleeper on earth when he smokes, and this time is no different, only…
He sighs, audibly, when he realizes his cock has been freed from its tight constraint. It lays heavy and unbearably hard on his navel, where Erwin’s spit still hasn’t dried. It’s humid, so warm.
Erwin’s lips stopped when he sighed.
And he’s not even touching his cock at all, so he, sleepy but excruciatingly horny, turns his head towards the cushions with a new goal in mind. It’s not perfect—he wishes he could drag the duvet over his mouth—but he wants to keep up the illusion that he’s still asleep by staying silent. Erwin seems to want that. Levi forgets the reason.
The sense of Erwin's tongue is much more faint than before. He's stroking his balls with it, sometimes closing his lips around one without sucking. His warm, heavy breath fans the base of his cock.
His shallow sense of consciousness mellows and fades again. The sound of his own breathing is heavy.
He twitches awake to heat and his hips wobbling, and bites down on his sleeve with a noisy gasp through his nose.
It’s different now, he notices immediately, much different. It blows his mind instantly, how the hell Erwin’s mouth can possibly feel this good. His entire cock is buried deep in his mouth.
He must've woken up when his tip tapped the back of his throat, and he swallowed. Who knows how long he was warming it before that.
Maybe he's just high, or maybe it's because Erwin still thinks he's asleep—but it's too damn good. A shiver shakes through his whole body as his hips tremble back and forward all on their own. Erwin’s hot breath, as hot as his sweet and welcoming mouth, fans over his crotch, with his nose scraping the wiry hair down there.
He’s reached his limit for dozing off, so his hand goes reaching under the duvet instead, closing on the back of Erwin’s head and winding in his silky soft undercut. It's not worth pretending he's asleep any longer—Erwin put his mouth on him and Levi's going to come in it.
His grip commands Erwin to stay still. Levi would use both, but he needs to keep his mouth covered. Noises, his voice, builds a pressure in his throat.
Why is he even...
Levi’s eyes widen when he remembers Hange asleep on the floor. That’s why.
Fuck, this is so wrong.
His breathing shivers as he brings his hips back, thrusting into that perfect mouth with sudden force. The same second he remembered, his cock throbbed and his hips bucked anyway. Somehow, in some sickening way, the understanding that Hange is a few feet away, clueless, turns him on even more.
He feels Erwin’s breath shake. He needs to stay silent too, or they’ll both be in trouble.
His balls tighten and raise, along with his back. Fuck, he just needs to come. Distantly, through the blood rushing in his ears, he hears moaning.
It’s himself. He bites down on his sleeve, his face on fire. Fuck…
A grip appears around his thin wrist, gently but firmly undoing Levi’s hold on his hair. Erwin slowly pulls off from his aching cock.
Really. Dammit... he was so close. He barely bites back a whine.
Erwin emerges from under the stupid duvet, and slams his mouth against his, wet and smelling of sweat and spunk, like he wants to swallow him whole—but he keeps more control than Levi, whose toes curl as Erwin's hand tightens around his throat, removing his voice guaranteed.
It’s like a punishment. Combined with the way he’s kissing him right now and cradling the nape of his neck, it’s encouragement.
His skin, even on his cheeks, is sweltering. The sweat on his forehead bleeds with Levi's.
Levi wraps his arms around him as he sips air desperately through his nose. All his weight presses him down, removing all control. He wants to drown in him.
As Erwin pulls away a fraction, he lets him breathe, but he doesn’t remove his hand. He holds his neck in a c-shape, like a necklace.
For the first time, he sees his face. Erwin’s eyes are dark, like an ocean abyss that gazes into him almost curiously.
Then pointedly, Erwin glances in Hange’s relative direction. They’re snoring slightly. Maybe it’d be louder if it weren’t for the movie.
“You’re fucking crazy,” Levi whispers.
“That’s interesting.” Erwin smiles. “I thought you were going to come, and you were hardly fucking my mouth.”
With the facts pointed at him, Levi closes his eyes and turns his head. “Fuck you, pervert."
Erwin leans down and speaks directly into his ear instead. “You're more perverted than me.”
Desperate not to answer and give Erwin the satisfaction, he grinds his hips up instead, finding purchase against Erwin's stomach.
Huffing, Erwin to his surprise drops most of his weight down on top of him.
It’s to roll him over. Gravity whirls. Erwin puts him on top with his pajama pants and boxer shorts awkwardly stuck around his thighs in various states of undress.
Erwin pins him in place with one arm like it’s his fault, and yanks them both down to right around his knees, and then, to Levi’s relief, pulls the duvet over them both, right up to Levi’s neck.
His heart is pounding. He’d be anxious, rightfully, if he wasn’t still high and Erwin’s touch gliding up his back didn’t make him melt.
“Bend your knees,” Erwin whispers in his ear.
He obeys. They slot in by some miracle outside Erwin’s hips. If he wasn’t flexible, it wouldn’t work, but as things are, there’s nothing he can do to close his legs, and that’s before Erwin bends his knees, trapping him in a tight kneel, situated in his lap with his ass in the air.
The implications steal Levi’s breath away before he stuffs his face in Erwin’s throat, grinding his teeth until they hurt. He’s wrapped his hand around his cock, fondling his tip and collecting cum on his fingers.
He sinks his nails in, biting Erwin’s shoulderblade dully with the the other clenched up in his sweatshirt.
This is crazy. Erwin is crazy for taking this much of a gamble on Levi of all people staying silent while he touches him like this, and spits such filth in his ear mere feet away from sleeping Hange.
But he’s also crazy for liking it, for having more cum drip onto Erwin’s dense muscles as two fingers drag back, over his taint, to play around his hole.
Levi’s breathing stalls as they dip into him, tightening up and squirming his knees uncontrollably.
“Don’t let Hange know that you’re this much of a slut,” Erwin whispers in his ear, and pushes them inside him.
They sink into him slowly. Too slowly for the edge Levi is on and the fast-paced scene taking place on the TV screen. He’s desperate enough for more to try and lower his hips, but at the same time just those fingers slowly inching in and dragging along his tight walls is more intense than it should be worth. Sweat beads on his forehead, and bleeds into Erwin’s shirt collar.
“Tighter than usual.”
Levi rears his foot to kick him, but they all the sudden curl, thrust, and curl deep inside him again. A whine louder than the rest escapes him, muffled. A dangerous moan builds in his throat.
Erwin tuts in disapproval and brings down his other hand—them slaps his ass in such a way that doesn’t make much of a sound and puts much more pressure down. He’s no longer moving his fingers, but they’re still buried to the bottom knuckle and making him shake.
“Shut up, angel.”
Levi sinks his canine teeth into his thick shirt collar, managing to knick a bit of his skin by accident. Erwin swallows the faintest of grunts. His keen awareness of sounds helps him pick up on Hange’s snoring through a quieter scene playing on TV as Erwin finger-fucks him.
“If I fucked you right in front of them, would you be more embarrassed that they were watching, or from coming too fast?”
He inhales sharply.
“You’re close,” Erwin states, a fact.
"Eat shit."
Digging his heels in outside Erwin's legs, he bends his back, makes him jolt as his fingers scrape much deeper than before, and Erwin can better freely fuck him with them. Now three stretching him open.
Erwin purrs in approval. "S'that better?"
They curl, making him clamp down as his fingertips nudge into his prostate—Levi's hips spasm, deeply gasping sips of air—just a mere suggestion of "better". He nods and nods.
"You're lucky you're beautiful. You need to come, don't you?"
He nods wildly, frantic as he dresses Erwin's neck in his teeth, but that's more of a hope than anything. "P-Please..."
Erwin whispers in his ear, "Then come."
He stalls completely, clamps his teeth closed as hard as possible to contain it, humping Erwin’s midriff uncontrollably, which soon becomes a dampened mess with load after load shooting onto it.
The movie gets loud. A breathy, gasping groan slips out towards the end, with his hole still gripping the fingers plunging ruthlessly into him and battering his prostate. Erwin breathes heavily in his ear.
Eventually, he’s finished. He completely melts as the afterglow sinks in, with Erwin’s fingers still barely moving in him. After pulsing rhythmically around him, it’s loosened and relaxed. And sensitive.
“I hope that left a mark,” Erwin whispers.
Perturbed, Levi hefts/ his eyes open and notices the wide bruised indention his teeth left in Erwin’s shoulder. He’s bleeding just slightly.
He shuts them again, breathing slow and heavy in Erwin’s neck and tasting his sweat. “Your fault.”
“Completely.”

“What are you thinking?” Levi asks, out of genuine curiosity.
Erwin draws closer too. Their fingers touch under the pillows as their foreheads are pressed together.
“I thought you said you didn't like this game.”
“Oi,” Levi kicks his feet softly in protest before their legs tangle together. “Don’t try to get smart with me.”
Erwin smiles faintly, then turns on his back to look at the ceiling again.
“You wouldn't like to hear it.”
Levi reaches for Erwin’s face as he crawls on top of him to straddle him, their bellies soft and warm with the morning idleness.
“Tell me,” he whispers, and their noses rub together softly. “What are you thinking?”
Erwin cradles his face now too, lets out a sigh, and quietly, he says, “That I don’t deserve you.”
Closing his eyes, Levi drops his forehead on Erwin’s chest, letting out a frustrated sigh. Because Erwin’s right. He doesn’t deserve him. He deserves so much more.
“You know, Erwin,” he finally says, raising his gaze. With one finger he taps Erwin’s forehead hard, “For someone so smart, you can be very stupid sometimes.”
Erwin’s frowning at him. “Levi—“
“We deserve to enjoy ourselves sometimes.” Levi cuts him off. “Every day can be our last one, I think about it all the time, whenever I go on my horse and ride outside the walls.”
“I think about it too, a lot,” Erwin says thoughtfully, now caressing Levi’s shoulders. “And that is exactly why this is a problem.”
“And what exactly is the problem with ‘this’?”
Erwin’s arms pull him close in a tight embrace all of a sudden. “That I can’t live with the fear of losing you out there.”
His words take him by surprise, just as much as his embrace.
“Levi, I— I never knew real fear until now. Never before I cared about what would happen to me outside the walls, but now I—“ his voice cracks, his nails are scratching Levi’s back, “I don’t want to die, Levi. I’m scared of dying and leaving you behind. And I don’t want you to die, either. And I’m so scared of making wrong decisions because of this fear.”
It takes a moment for the words to sink into Levi’s brain, and then it suddenly strikes him. It all seems clear now. Levi realizes this, and the simplicity of it is almost infuriating.
“Is that why you’ve been hesitant until now?”
Erwin swallows hard, the crease between his brows deepening every second that passes, and Levi wishes nothing more than to kiss his forehead to vanish all worries from his face.
“I once had someone,” Erwin begins, voice calm, hinted with nostalgia. “Or I thought I did.”
Marie… Levi thinks, but he does not say. He listens carefully, silently.
“She was kind and beautiful, and I thought I’d loved her. But when the time came, I–” he cuts himself off, closes his eyes softly. “I just couldn’t. I thought I was rejecting her, to put my career and my dream first. I told myself I was doing it for her, that it was the noble thing to do. If I died, I didn't want her to grieve for me, to become a widow at such a young age. So I made my choice.”
Levi’s still listening intently, his heart shrinking slowly in his chest. It matters not, he tells himself. He’s the one lying with him right now. He’s the one healing his wounds.
“With you, Levi, I…” He opens his eyes then, glassy eyes stare at him, blue and bright, like the morning sky, tainted with the gray of rain clouds threatening to pour. “With you, I never had a choice. You came into my life, and everything changed.”
Levi’s eyes open wide, he shudders, at his lack of words. But there is nothing he can do or say to verbalize the cluster of feelings knotting down in his throat.
“I’m scared that this fear will blind my judgment,” Erwin says, “Maybe I’m no longer suited to be a commander.”
Levi chuckles, his eyes tearing, because it all seems preposterous. “I swear, commander, you’re so surprisingly dumb sometimes.”
“Levi—“
“Look, we will probably die in either one day or one year from now anyway. And if you don't allow yourself to enjoy the pleasures of life, even for a moment, then what was it worth living for? You'll die with nothing but regrets.”
Erwin is staring at him with wide eyes, attentively, and Levi feels suddenly self aware of his own words, because he never talks this much, but somehow, he can't stop himself from talking.

Falling Chapter 4: More Business
Tumblr media
The bumpy carriage ride was putting Levi in a bad mood. Not only did he have to be inside all day on a lovely summer’s day, but he also had to be cooped up with a bunch or self-important assholes all day. Levi yawned and tried to get comfortable. At least Erwin was there in this hell with him. Though he seemed to be wholly unbothered by their current situation.
“I get your friends and all, but why did you have to bring him along?” Commander Shadis indicated Levi to Erwin.
“Hey,” Levi Interjected. “I’m not exactly thrilled about this either, Commander.”
“I want the council members to see him. He is one of our best, after all.” Erwin gave Levi a jovial grin.
“Hmph!” grunted Shadis. “Are you trying to scare them into approving our expeditions?”
“No, but I wouldn’t mind if he unnerved one or two of them.” Erwin replied casually.
“Well, his is pretty unnerving.” Shadis chucked to himself. “Not sure what you’re playing at here, but you seem to know what you’re doing. Especially after last time.”
“These men,” Erwin began, "keep trying to screw humanity out of the truth. They need to remember who is keeping them safe.”
“Fine.” Shadis shrugged. "But if this blows up on you, don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Have I been wrong yet, Commander?” Erwin questioned.
“No, damn you. You’re somehow always one step ahead of all of us.”
As they were talking, Erwin felt Levi slump against him. He looked down to find his friend fast asleep.
“Wait is he really...?” Shadis asked in disbelief.
“Yes, Sir. Rumor has it, Levi only sleeps a few hours every night.”
“Well, I’ll be damned.” said Shadis. “I hate to imagine what he could accomplish on a full nights’ rest.”
“We might be done with our fight against the Titans.” Erwin mused.
Levi awoke to Erwin shaking him gently out of his slumber.
“We’re here.” he said simply as he exited the carriage. It was only then that Levi realized in horror that he had fallen asleep against Erwin.
“Hey was I …?” Levi pointed back at the carriage as they walked inside.
“Sleeping on me?” Erwin finished for him. “Yes, you were.”
“Sorry about that.” Levi searched Erwin’s face.
“I barely noticed.” Erwin tried to sound casual. “In fact, feel free to use me as a pillow anytime”
“Tsk, pervert.” Levi smiled despite himself.
The day went by just about as slowly and painfully as Levi had thought they would. He tuned out most of it. It was petty drivel from self-important idiots. He shook hands and kept a civil tongue un his head with the people he was introduced to, but that was the extent of what he could handle. He sat with Erwin while the commander in Chief made his case for another recon mission. Levi looked around the room and wondered how many of these guys knew what their colleague had tried to do. I bet at least one of these bastards knows something, He mused. Erwin suspects so anyway and wants to remind them that he’s smarter than them. Of course, maybe he just wanted an excuse for us to be together? Tsk yeah right.
Levi did notice that a couple of the members seemed more on edge than others when meeting him and kept looking over at him and Erwin. He made a mental note of it and mentioned it to Erwin after the meeting. Erwin nodded in response and made a point to speak to them before they departed-Levi in tow. Levi had to admit that he enjoyed watching the bastards squirm.
The whole ordeal seemed to drag on for way too long in Levi’s mind. But in the end, they got what they came for. With both approval and funding secured, the three prepared to head back to Trost. Levi was looking forward to a quiet evening with a good book. However, before they could reach the carriage that would take them home, Erwin paused.
“Apologies Sir, but I just remembered I had more business to attend to.” Erwin told the commander. Shadis looked surprised but said nothing. The two watched the commander drive off before Erwin beckoned Levi.
 “Really? More business?” Levi whined.
“Come on, Levi. I think you’re going to enjoy this bit of business.” There was a mischievous twinkle in Erwin’s eyes. He reached out and grabbed Levi’s wrist and led him through crowded streets and down dark alleyways. Along the way he stopped to buy some food but instead of eating it then, he kept pushing through the hubbub towards his destination.
“Where the hell are you taking me?” Levi was starting to feel a little concerned.
“We’re almost there!”
They were steadily making their way uphill, backtracking to where they came from.
“Why are we going back? Haven’t you tortured me enough for one day?” Levi groaned.
“Have a little faith. I wouldn’t do that to you.”
“Then where the hell are we going?” Levi demanded once more.
“This way!” Erwin guided him towards the entrance to a tower of some building Levi did not recognize. They immediately began climbing up the steps, gradually winding their way closer and closer to the top.
“This had better be worth it.” Levi warned his friend.
“Trust me, it will be.” Erwin came to a door at what appeared to be the top of the stairs. “Are you ready?”
“Just open the damn door already, asshole.”
“Is that any way to talk to your commanding officer?” Erwin chided with a chuckle. Levi just glared at him in response. “Fine, fine, you win.” Erwin relented good naturedly and opened the door.
The first thing Levi noticed was how much fresher the air felt up here. The noise of the city below seemed to almost disappear, and a gust of wind hit Levi in the face. Then he saw the view in front of him. On this beautiful summer day, he could see for miles past wall Sina. Nothing but green grass, distant forests, and rolling hills as far as the eye could see and, in the distance, Wall Rose.
“Well?” Erwin demanded.
“Alright, you win. This isn’t half bad.” Levi admitted.
“Not half bad? That good huh?” Erwin teased.
“Don’t let it go to your head.”
They two men stared out in silence for a moment.
“So how did you find this place anyway?” Levi asked.
“I used to come up here with my father.” This was the first time Erwin had spoken of his family or his childhood. Levi had never pushed because of his own traumatic past.
“You grew up here?” Levi sounded surprised.
“I did.” Erwin didn’t seem to want to elaborate. There was a sadness in his voice that warned Levi to back off.
“Is the ‘urgent business’ you told Shadis about?” Levi tried to change the subject. Erwin smiled gratefully at him.
“It is pretty important, don’t you agree?”
“Oh very.” Levi retorted. “You know what’s also important?”
“What’s that?”
“The food we haven’t eaten. I’m starving.”
The two ate their slap-dash meal as the sun sank lower on the horizon. They chatted about the events of the day and made fun of the various council members. They joked about their team members and mused on the upcoming expedition.
“What did you say to those idiots anyway? The ones you spoke to privately that is.” Levi inquired.
“Not much. I asked them how their buddy was doing-the one that hired you.” Levi nodded. “And I may have mentioned that you are our strongest soldier now. Just to remind them how badly their friend failed.” Erwin winked at Levi.
Levi chuckled. “I wish I could have seen their faces.”
“It was pretty priceless.” Erwin admitted, laughing as well. “It was very satisfying, I must admit.”
“I bet” Levi shook his head. After a moment he turned towards Erwin. “Do you really think I am your strongest soldier or were you just trying to scare those bastards?”
“Both.” Erwin replied simply. He could see Levi processing the compliment. A flush appeared on Levi’s cheek before he rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, well, finally some recognition around here.” He tried to deflect.
The world seemed a million miles away up here. This felt like their own little bubble where nothing bad could happen. The worries and stress of the day seemed to melt away as the fresh air and cool evening breeze filled their senses. If only they could stay like this forever. The sun began to sink low in the sky.
“We should be heading back.” Levi commented.
“You’re right. It is getting late, and Shadis will be fuming if we’re not back before daybreak.” Erwin said with a rueful sigh.
“I’m making us tea when we get back.” Levi stated as they made their way down the stairs towards the busy street below.
“We better hope that the Titans never disrupt our tea supply.” Erwin chuckled.
“If that happens, they will all die slowly and painfully” Levi growled darkly.
“Woe to the Titan that comes between Levi and his tea” Erwin let out a hearty laugh. The image of Levi going on a murderous rampage over tea flashed through Erwin’s head.
Levi shoved Erwin playfully. “It’s not a joking matter” he replied indignantly.
“Mm not at all.” Erwin continued to laugh.
“You’re such an asshole.” Levi smiled despite himself.
“I’ve been called worse.” Erwin replied with a shrug and wink. Their eyes met and for a moment, there was complete silence between them. Levi was sure Erwin could hear his heart pounding a tattoo against his chest. He tried to steady his breathing. Erwin felt flushed and short of breath. Their eyes met and a flash of desire read on their faces. In that moment, both fought against the urge to fall into each other's arms and never let go. They both unconsciously clenched their fists, trying to will themselves to stop. The slightest movement from one of them and it would be all over. They both knew it.
“If we hurry, we can get back before it’s too late.” Erwin steeled himself with a deep breath. It was almost painful having to fight against himself like this.
“Yeah, we should probably hurry.” Levi hoped that his voice sounded even.
They made their way through the city in silence. The spell of the evening was broken and all that was left was their aching hearts, longing for something they knew they shouldn’t. This could only end in heartache and loss and they both knew it. Still, in that moment, they had seen the longing in each other’s eyes and they both knew that they couldn’t hold on before something had to change. They couldn't ignore their feelings much longer.
Erwin lay restless in bed that night. He couldn’t sleep, no matter how hard he tried. Images of the day flashed through his head of Levi. That smile that only came out around Erwin made his heart leap in his chest. Erwin tossed and turned as if trying to run away from his own mind. This was torture. Before Levi, he had been content to be alone. There was a certain comfort in his solitude. It allowed him to focus on his dream of finding the truth. His head had not so much as turned for another person since Marie, and Erwin was happy for that to be his one great love. He never regretted his decision and knowing that Nile was able to care for Marie gave Erwin joy. He knew he could never have given her what Nile could. Erwin was content to sacrifice his happiness for hers.
But Levi was different. He knew now that he could never give Levi up. He couldn’t be selfless when it came to this beautiful, amazing man. Their bond exceeded all explanation in Erwin’s mind. It wasn’t logical. But it was the realest feeling that he had felt about another person. At least in a romantic way. It reminded Erwin of his first time outside of the walls. H had felt like he hadn’t known what real freedom felt like until then. His feelings for Marie felt like a schoolboy crush in comparison to what he experienced with Levi.
Fuck this. Erwin got out of bed and threw on his trousers. He made his way up to the rooftop where he and Levi had first begun to become friends. He had some vague idea that Levi would be there, and he would profess his feelings there and then. But when he arrived, it was completely deserted. Of course, he’s probably asleep. I am the fool who lets this keep me up at night. Erwin chided himself. He sat alone for some time before collecting himself and walking back to his chambers. Sleep eluded him with every passing hour until he finally passed out from pure exhaustion. Even in sleep, his dreams were restless, and Levi was always just out of reach.
Levi was used to not sleeping. After all, he could never get more than a few hours’ of sleep at a time. But falling asleep had never been a problem before now. In the last couple months, Levi had struggled far more to go to sleep-especially after having spent the evening with Erwin. His mind fixated on every part of their interactions that day as he lay sleepless in the dark, surrounded by his sleeping comrades. Lucky bastards, Levi huffed and turned over. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw brilliant blue ones staring back at him. He heard Erwin’s light chuckle. He heard how Erwin said his name and it sent an electric shock through his body.
Did he really look at me like that? That split second replayed in his mind. Was that the same want that I feel? It couldn’t be. It never was. Levi had never been in love, not really. He never let anyone get that close. There was one boy he grew up with that he had feelings for. Call it a crush, or love, it didn’t matter. In the end, the boy was found dead, and Levi was left alone. He kept everyone at arms’ length. Maybe not Furlan and Isabel but they were the exceptions. Isabel was like a little sister to him, and Furlan was a true friend. ERwin reminded him of Furlan sometimes, the way he planned and strategized. On the nights when the darkness and loneliness threatened to consume him, he would seek out the company of strangers so he could feel some small, passing relief from the ghosts that haunted him. But those encounters often left him worse off than before. Men full of shame can be cruel and he felt used up and alone afterwards. He would tell himself he wanted it that way, but the truth was that he never believed he deserved any better.
This was new. What he felt with Erwin was more wholesome and purer. It felt like the first time he’d left the underground and felt the kiss of sunlight on his skin. It was wonderous and terrifying all at once. Erwin had always unsettled Levi. At first it fueled the fires of hatred in his determination to kill the man. Now it felt comforting. It meant that he was accepted and seen. Erwin was the first person to make him feel good enough because Erwin saw Levi for exactly who he was and believed in him. It was a beautiful and overwhelming feeling that Levi had longed for, deep in his heart, but had given up on ever experiencing. He knew without a shadow of a doubt that he would do anything for that man. He would fight whatever enemy stood in his way for him, he would lay down his own life for him. No matter what, he knew he could trust Erwin and that trust gave him the fire in his belly to do whatever Erwin asked of him. He could put Erwin’s happiness above his own without fear that he would be taken advantage of. Erwin made him feel worthy.
I can’t take this anymore. Levi got up, grabbed his jacket, and hurried off to Erwin’s room. He didn’t know why he was going there or what he would do when he got there. He just knew that he had to go. He practically ran along the well-trodden path between his barracks and Erwin’s chambers. He had to be with Erwin. It was as if some invisible force was drawing him towards the desire of his heart. He stood in front of Erwin’s door, took a deep breath and knocked.
There was no response.
He knocked again.
Nothing.
That idiot isn’t still in his office, is he? Levi rushed through the corridors towards the only other place he could think of to look for Erwin. He knocked on the door, but all was silent. There was no light emitting from the cracks of the door frame. Where the fuck are you, you dumbass. Levi was starting to feel frantic. As he walked back towards Erwin’s room, he tried to calm himself down. He’s probably just out cold and can’t hear me. Levi told himself. I should just let him sleep. There’s no reason we both should lose sleep tonight. He took a deep breath. This was a dumb idea anyway. What was I going to do, throw myself in his arms and confess my undying love? How pathetic is that! He paused outside Erwin’s bedroom door. If he had only known what was happening on the other side, he might have tried again.
Instead, Levi lay in his bunk and watched the moon set and the sun rise, all the while berating himself for his utter stupidity.
