Socially aware people, when they say "a teacher is human, too": a teacher has needs and a life. Often times, they have a family that may become neglected as they do their best to serve the students and community that don't pay them enough to sustain that family. Teachers require rest and care and support as much as any other person, and they are not receiving any of that under their current circumstances.

Students, when they say "a teacher is human, too": this person that was forced to be a mentor and guide to me also has feelings of triumph and loss and struggle underneath the person they've been forced to be. They can have fun and fall in love and do stupid things just like I can! If I have questions about life instead of just about school, then this one very specific teacher can answer them because that's a human being.

Hey, quick bit of advice for writers of various media! If you have a premise that focuses on the protagonist getting involved with/having to work alongside a primary character who’s a criminal, don’t pull the Secret Cop trope.

Unlike what you might be thinking, when you turn to the audience and go “The protagonist cares for this person and no longer sees them as a simple ‘bad guy’ but instead as a complex if flawed individual with their own set of circumstances… but that’s okay because actually they’ve been a cop this whole time! They’re one of the Good Guys!” we’re not going to think “Oh thank goodness!” or “Wow, I was worried for a second there!”

Rather, your audience is more likely to respond with “Hey what the fuck?” or “You promised us a story about a criminal!” or my personal reaction “Them being a cop is worse actually.”

If your synopsis revolves around someone who’s never broken any major laws and someone who definitely has forming some sort of relationship and finding common ground, that’s what people are hoping to see when they dive in! Not a bait and switch that obliterates half the tension of the plot and undoes a good chunk of character development for one of your key players.

TLDR; Give people what it says on the box, Secret Cop trope doesn’t work how you think it does.
