The Holy Knights get more and more interesting with each chapter! Honestly, I'm loving them as antagonists!
I have more questions about Gunko every time she appears because so many things about her don't seem to add up. She is the only Holy Knight who has not received the title of World Noble or had her family name introduced (she also does not have a Saint in her name, but neither does Shamrock). She's also the only "celestial dragon" we've seen who has the power of a devil fruit (and we know from Hancock's story that they despise devil fruits), her uniform is very different from the others, and her eyes having different colors seems like it's going to be important in some way. Her powers are very similar to Imu's aesthetically, so I don't think it's a coincidence that she is the one who summons the "abyss" (the pentagram "portal"). Also, her name means "army child", which may imply that she was recruited (perhaps as a child) and trained to be part of the Holy Knights.
Kiringham being introduced in his hybrid form immediately catched my attention. Does his normal appearance reveal some kind of secret about him? He's the only Holy Knight introduced so far who wears the same bubble on his head as the other World Nobles, and the one he wears even appears to have something to help him breathe, so it's possible he has some sort of respiratory illness, or was only recently recruited, so he may have never actually left the Holy Land, which would explain why he was so nervous about being late even though he was already dressed and transformed. Personally, I feel like he could be quite young? As I said, he seems to be very nervous and curious about Elbaph, which probably means he has never been outside of Mary Geoise, and the bubble could be to prevent him from being corrupted by the air from the “filthy world”, also, the way he talks reminds me a bit of a teenager, but that could just be the translation I read.
Having a Holy Knight from one of the Gorosei's family is really exciting, and I hope this helps us answer some questions about the elders. Sommers also seems to be the oldest of the four, and it's the first to take responsability after finding out that Shamrock needs to go back to Mary Geoise, so he probably has been a Holy Knight for a very long period before the current time. He's also the first person we see actually concerned about the food thing in the Holy Land (which is kind of crazy, but okay).
And I don't even need to start talking about the whole Shamrock situation.
Also, the fact that Sommers so casually asked if Shamrock and Gunko were visiting Harald's grave is pretty weird. Like, we know what World Nobles are like, why would they care about Harald? He wasn't even affiliated with the government (and they wouldn't care about him either if that were the case), so why would they travel such a great distance just to see his grave? Why is this a possibility?? Was Harald also a Holy Knight? That's the only way I can see it being reasonable. We can see from their interactions in this chapter that the Holy Knights seem to get along pretty well, so two of them visiting the grave of a deceased colleague would make sense. This could explain why they tried to recruit Loki specifically and not another insanely powerful individual, since he would be the son of a former member, and we know how much they care about bloodlines.

anyways. thinking about essence users who, after ranking up, lose that scar on their ribs they looked at fondly because it's a remnant of the time spent playing with their younger siblings. that facial quirk their spouse fell in love with disappearing to make them 'perfect'. not recognising themselves in the mirror because their skin hasn't been this smooth since they were a child. essence users who think that getting powers will help their chronic pain, only for it to be replaced by the mana pain. just. like. magic robbing the users of themselves.

Adventurefriends 2 and Archive E-189-L making me insane tn.
The auto-mecha-detection-cube made to react to "intangible inexplicable unknown forces" and "extra-reality entities" originally going off in response to the hero. The cube having coffee spilled into it making it stop registering the hero. The hero drinking coffee, then having a seizure and dreaming of the galaxy exploding- the events just prior to the Reset. Like coffee is the way to register the change in the universe.
The fact that the hero's essence was incompatible with lock and key, that they're registered as an anomaly by Aequillibria, that their mana levels can't be read by manaphages (remnants of shadowscythe tech).
Sk'aar needing to 'consume certain aspects' of the dream world in order to wrest control of it from "its current master", that being the hero. People being the most complex and therefore best to consume- the best route to eventually consuming the hero themself.
"And you, [Hero]. I know you. I know all about you. I know what even you don't know about you. I know this world, this dream of yours, and I know your world. Memories and mana eternally flowing. Information just out of reach of visibility. Now I have you. You have me. And we will unleash that which slumbers-"
The fact that Sk'aar was held off by coueage and stories- by memories, memories of friendship and camaraderie specifically. That it is described as relishing in the Hero's despair, that it can "turn the dream into a nightmare", wielding fear... and being defeated by hope. Just the same way that the Shadowscythe nanovirus was defeated- hope from the presence of a trusted friend and leader.
The fact that Lock and Key are storage units, charged with storing information from before the Reset, as well as something they couldn't contain- something that should have corrupted them. They instead "woke" after reaching symbiosis with that thing- that they can now act, but still have to do so working around their protocols. The fact that they are "a pair among many".
The fact that Aequillibria is clearly a computer system too... and "virus" has a meaning for computers just as much as for biology.

So Willis is Ma Gunn's son. He has a neice, Faye Gunn II, implying he has a sibling.
That's not what I wanted to talk about though, I'll get to that in a later post. I wanted to talk about the fact that Faye has fully white hair even though she seems Jason's age or younger. Which has. Implications about Jason's white streak. Possibly that it's a genetic condition that Jason chose to hide on the streets/as Robin and the pit just washed it out.

hwfwm wouldnt be unique in this but the way the astai(?) pirates are being treated almost like another type of monster fight kinda sketches me out.
like, apparently the main society structures its large cities so that villagers can shelter during a monster surge-- but are these nomadic people included in that? also, from what weve seen they started the agression against the coin convoy, but are they native to this area, and the farmers colonists who took their productive land? are these raids a new phenomenon? why did the negotiations fall through?
this seems like a pretty significant societal conflict, but unlike the class/organized crime conflict, neither jason nor the narrative seem to express any particular concern about it.
maybe i havent given it enough time and the book will dive into it later, but its just been revealed that all the women and children were locked up like the slaves and jason's main thought was "wow glad i dont have to deal with that" and then thinking about how his powers worked in the fight, and it just seems like a really blasé treatment from a book where the main character is usually very opinionated about social issues.

HELD on to this ask a bit longer than originally intended, i hope you don't mind!! this was so lovely to read after my little crisis of faith <- many such cases <3 thank you for this, really. and you're completely right of course...! knowing and not knowing certain things doesn't dictate whether someone belongs in a space.

i'm not and will never be over the dynamic two children built in s1, the complexities of a superhero and a pragmatist, the collision of worlds, the conflict of someone being half-right about you, the care you develop for someone in the dire straits but the mistrust you can't quite overcome until all cards are finally on the table...
i am of course talking about el & lucas.

It's not an immediate change. When the party arrived in Baldur's gate, Nøkk became quieter. Bit by bit. You could hear him sing to himself or tell tales by the campfire less and less. If he didn't need it to cast spells, Nøkk's violin would have started to collect dust. The night before the journey to the Bhaal temple was dead silent.
