Something I've wanted to do for a while is expand the graphical map of the Adwera EU4 mod. Originally it was just a 512x512 map, but that led to graphical weirdness when you zoomed out too much--EU4's map rendering functions weren't designed to handle the map tiling multiple times in the in-game view. I had an idea originally that I was going to render Adwera and northeast Rezana in detail, and give the rest of the world a sort of parchmenty map texture, but I couldn't get that to look decent. So in the end I decided to just render the whole world--or at least the middle latitudes--which also gives me the option to fairly easily alter or extend the playable area in the future beyond the current scope.
But it took a while. Even if you're filling most of the map with wasteland provinces, you need a heightmap, normal map, terrain file, colormaps, and trees file. Those last three also required having some general idea of the climactic dynamics (which are still on shaky ground, but I'm pronouncing them Good Enough for EU4 mod purposes). So this particular part of the project stalled out until recently.
If I were being really completionist, I would also do rivers for all the wasteland areas. But drawing rivers in EU4 is actually incredibly annoying (they have to be continuous lines in like a taxicab geometry sense, and tributaries have to be marked separately).

fun fact: I found some papers I used for my actual, real thesis, while researching for an EU4 mod.

I think you've mentioned liking 4x games before. Favorite one? Have you ever checked out any total conversations of it? I've been wanting to check out After The End for Crusader Kings.
ATE is pretty fun, but the CK3 version runs like shit on my computer, so I haven't played it in quite a while.
I quite like Anbennar, which is a total conversion mod for EU4. It's a bit jank in places, and still very much a work in progress, but it's a blast, especially if you're looking for a challenge. a lot of the writing is also fantastic, albeit very dark - it puts a heavy emphasis on the evils of colonialism and imperialism, and there's a recurring thread of "countries using national trauma to justify committing atrocities" that feels a lot more Real and well-thought-out than the common "oppressors bad but revolutionaries also bad" approach.

what's up with Leviathan eu4? searched it up and like wow that's the lowest rated thing I've seen on steam... pretty much ever lol
as-released it was so badly bugged it made the game unplayable
its features were ill-conceived and broke a lot of existing systems
its features were so mind-bogglingly strong that they trivialized the game
generally a lot of this is attributable to a new studio coming in and the natural problems that are gonna happen with a new studio's first release. however unfortunately, and most importantly for me:
4. it set the tone for the rest of the game's life cycle, which was 'we've reached the absolute limit of what we can meaningfully do with the game's engine and core framework, so here's a bunch of dumb bullshit that lives on top of all the other systems without meaningful interaction with them'
like, people joke about hearts of iron mods trying to turn the game into a visual novel, but that's essentially official paradox policy now wrt eu4. every update is just like 'new mission chain based on some wacky althist to give france massive bonuses for colonizing siberia or annexing singapore or some bullshit'. it's a boring and uninteresting design philosophy to me that goes against everything that i like about paradox games so i'm basically not interested anymore

I heard you play paradox games. Got a favorite?
difficult question tbh, hoi4 is close as a result of the VAST modding community and potential for modding that even a smooth brain like I can force out a mod, and just the brain rot that ensures after exactly 7,169 hours and counting of staring at HOI4 maps but i think i like Vic2 more as a game on it's own even if i've played much less of it. Still learning EU4 and CK3 but i wanna learn those two well enough to do a good mega-campaign as a Mozarab Iberia!

Oh its been a while so I have maps sitting around I made. Here's the most recent, a historical map of Iochand from the Anbennar EU4 mod.
The only kingdom to have a gnomish dynasty, and ruled over a mostly human population. Whimsical bunch.

My personal headcanon when I'm playing a Paradox grand strategy mega campaign that spans multiple games, each with different concepts regarding the role of the player (like how in CK3 you're playing a character, but from EU4 onwards you're basically playing as the whole state),
*big breath* is that the player is actually playing an alien parasite throughout all of the games, possessing the body of the current head of state, but also influencing the realm through altogether other means. The goals of the player, which might only get realized through multiple millenia and through the sometimes seemingly irrational sacrifice and dedication of many rulers, are the goals of this alien. A multiplayer game involves multiple such alien factions.
Idk, I feel like this brings a sort of continuity to the whole series of games. Maybe it should be the basis for some alien themed mods.

Mulen, Anbennar Event
An event image I drew up for the Anbennar mod of EU4, I like the harpies a lot. Mulen in particular was very fun.

Have you ever considered making a mod to a game like Victoria or HOI for your world?
Been working on an EU4 mod that covers Adwera during the period of Nurhani conquest. The original idea was a mod aimed at shorter-session and faster-running games, so it wouldn’t be expanded to cover the whole world. But like all such projects it’s a deadline-free spare time sort of thing, so progress is slow. It was actually part of what spurred me to redraw the world map, in fact.
Right now I don’t have more than a patchwork idea of what’s going on during most eras of Sogant Raha’s history (and that history is 60,000 years long), so blocking out a whole world’s worth of countries, ideas, religions, cultures, toponyms, etc., even for one 400-year period or so would be a ton of work. Maybe someday.

have you ever visited asia before? how was it like?
bonus question: what's your favourite eu4 mod? graphical (eg tbarw), gameplay (eg ante bellum), silly thing (eg that one mod that changes the lion on the bohemian flag to boykisser), anything
I have not but I want to! Really badly!
I'd love to visit Japan once, particularly Kyoto. I dig the vibes of cities that intentionally project a dated aesthetic and there are many landmarks I'd like to visit. The Fushimi Inari-taisha and Enryaku-ji are top of my list, but I'm sure I'd stop at countless other Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples along the way, not to mention all the restaurants and other touristy places.
Ōsaka and Tokyo also rank high among places I'd like to go. And I'd like to at least once see some of the landmarks the souvenirs my late grandfather brought back from Japan when he worked for a Japanese car manufacturer came from, like the Meiji-jingu and Tsurugaoka's Hachiman-gu.
China also sounds neat. The Great Wall, the Forbidden City... I'd like to go visit Zhenning Temple the most though. Master Renshan, who did my 3 refuges and 5 precepts ceremony online just last November, is the abbot there so I feel like I owe it to him to visit at least once.
And finally I'd like to go to Taiwan because growing up I had a couple Taiwanese friends growing up and they introduced me to bits and pieces of their culture.
...And man, haven't played EU4 in ages! But my favorite mod's gotta be this one that made the map just so much more aesthetically pleasing. I'll have to look up its name.

Why did I imediately think Orcs in the Anbennar mod for EU4?
(At least in that case the "reparations for the Greentide" thing they use to justify discrimination and slavery is a transparent BS excuse for "we want scapegoats and cheap labor." Much like the christian hegemonic europe used the traditional, cherished beliefs of those people for "they are pagans and we protect their souls" with even greater BS.)
hey writers if you want to make a metaphor for racism, please maybe remember that racism is literally based on nothing. Africans weren’t enslaved en masse because the Robo-Musa threatened to destroy the world, they were enslaved because it was economically rewarding and politically convenient. If at any point your allegory for racism includes “so <oppressed group> did this major catastrophe and” then you have not only missed the point but you are literally reinforcing the ideas that racism have let racism self-perpetuate (that e.g. black people are naturally dangerous and violent and must be contained or begrudgingly accepted by the Nice White People)
