talking about rebelle

TLDR: it's really good

Too Long DID read: in the niche it occupies, it's the best program I've used. This isn't a sponsored post, nothing like that, no affiliate links. Just pure sweet fat of the hog.

Rebelle Paint is a painting software designed around imitating physical mediums. Watercolour, gouache, acrylic, oils, pastels, and so on. It might be better to think of it as a physics software that happens to have a bunch of art tools inside, for better or for worse. Let me give you an example.

These two blobs represent an area of the canvas I've made wet through the watercolour tools. This is where the physics sim comes into it. The backgrounds aren't just static paper textures, the paint disperses and interacts with the grain of the 'paper', or the canvas, or whatever you have selected.

If you're already good with watercolours, you're set. If not, like me, you're in for a steep, steep learning curve, because they're hard to control. I can't call that a fault, real watercolours aren't exactly famed for being easy to use. But if you do this across a few layers, that means Rebelle is simulating a bunch of things at once, which means that your computer is gonna CHUG. Seriously, if you have a laptop, get the demo before you even think about buying it. I'm using a solid desktop and can't go beyond five layers without my processor screaming for mercy. This is only with the watercolours, however, for things like ink/markers, I got up to about 30 layers with that comic. Deploy the pomegranate.

Circling back to that canvas being a physics object thing...

Here's what comes with the software, enough to cover any of the mediums you'll use in it. If you want more, however, you have to buy them in the store, and if you wanted all of them, for whatever reason, that represents about 150 dollarydoos, and individual sets (cold pressed watercolour etc) coming out to about 10 each. I might pick one up in the future if I really want one, but so far I haven't felt the need. You aren't being deprived of options, is what I'm saying.

The biggest compliment I can give the software is that it feels like they either take direct feedback from its user base, or are so good at pre-empting what you might need that it makes other software like this (Corel, CSP) seem clunky. Let me give you an example. Like most art software, there's a reference panel.

Unlike most art software, that panel comes with tools already in it that are very useful. Say I just wanted to practice painting in colour, and the likeness of this model isn't what I'm focusing on. You have two options: half-assing it, or tracing and then painting yourself. Rebelle lets you place guidelines on the reference, which are then projected onto the canvas. If you toggle greyscale mode on to check your values, then colour-pick, you don't pick up the desaturated tone, you'll always pick the true colour underneath. That might sound like a small thing, but when you get used to working around that in other software, it adds up.

All tools are able to interact with one another. Want to drench your acrylic paint in water? Go for it! A lot of traditional imitation software locks the tools you can use to certain layer types (Corel, Realistic Paint Studio), but not here.

Liquify, transform tools, adjustment layers, all the normal stuff you'd want in digital is all here.

Brush customisation engine is excellent

Cons:

Two tiers of purchase (standard and pro). I bought standard, and honestly I'm thinking about upgrading because the image scaling is locked behind pro. Standard shakes out to about ninety bucks, pro one-fifty, and in this economy that's a big ask. Saying that, there is a sale on right now. If you just want digital tools that mimic traditional, and don't need any of the extras, consider Artrage Lite at one third the price.

Resource HUNGRY. Way, way more than any other art program I've used.

Anything involving water requires juggling in a way real watercolour doesn't. It's very very easy to keep painting, look back, and realise something 5 layers ago is still soaked and leaked into everything else.

Prone to crashing.

Overall, I'm really happy with it. I don't think it's great for anything very detailed, like that comic I did the other day, and for general use Clip Studio Paint is a better purchase, but this is a great supplement.

I don’t think there are primary elections for mayoral races, but I still love the idea that if a candidate switches political parties (any time after the primaries, I’d suggest), then they should A) not be allowed to hold the office they ran for until they run + win as a member of their new party, B) pay heavy fines from their personal funds, C) they should be forced to resign, and D) the election should be re-done.

The Democratic Party needs to tighten up and make some rules regarding who can and cannot run as a Democrat.

Literally months before SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade, Nancy Pelosi was backing a homophobic, anti-abortion, “Democratic” 🙄 candidate named Henry Cuellar, saying that a candidate’s stance on abortion wasn’t important. And Cuellar’s opponent was a young pro-abortion, pro-LGBTQ immigration attorney named Jessica Cisneros! And it was a relatively safe blue district, meaning that whichever Democrat the DNC backed, they were likely to win and a Republican hadn’t won that district in forever. AND before that, Pelosi and the DCCC threw their weight behind another openly homophobic “Democrat” named Dan Lipinski.

Could you even imagine Mitch McConnell or Kevin McCarthy openly throwing their support behind a pro-abortion candidate who wanted gun control? No? So why tf does Democratic leadership constantly foist GOP-lite candidates onto the Democratic Party when other viable options exist?

Just a guess on my part, but if you want fewer anti-abortion laws getting passed, then you should probably back fewer anti-abortion candidates. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

“Vote blue no matter who” has bitten Democrats in the ass wayyy more than any converse slogan has bitten Republicans. Because Republicans actually vet their candidates and make sure that those candidates want the same deplorable things that their deplorable base wants.

I’m not even saying to support a third party candidate. I want Trump and all Republicans gone in the next few election cycles. Thoughts on the Mike Pollocks Pro Israeli stance?

I have mostly kept my nose out of the Palestine struggles. Now, to be clear, I am against the obvious lies and attempts to cover up the real, actual, awful things going on over there. Like, for example, the sentiment over the recent threat to ban Tiktok, where people suggest it's because it is making it too easy for people to learn about what's going on over there? I agree with the theory that's probably just a suppression tactic.

I have also made a couple small contributions to Palestine relief charities, but I'm obviously not in a great place financially to do much more than very small amounts (but I did, for example, buy the Itch.io bundle a few weeks ago).

I do not want innocent Palestinians to suffer. I do not want war and death and what is almost certainly attempted genocide.

But, in general, I do not and have not dove head first into this topic. A lot of things in this world are very bad right now, including things local to me in my own life. For my own mental health I have limited the amount of bummers that I allow myself to ingest right now. I feel like it's important to set that up. I am not speaking authoritatively or with a complete picture of every little nuance.

It is a bummer about Mike Pollock. But, from the little bits I did see, it did not look like he was calling for bloodshed. I don't think he's in favor of genocide. He is, however, jewish, so you can maybe see why he'd align with Israel on a basic level. I think he specifically said in the Twitter Spaces, before he got frustrated and logged off, that he wishes for peace.

It's easy to get up in arms about pro-Israel people because of all of the awful, horrendous stuff happening over there. But just like how the actions of the American Military do not necessarily represent the thoughts and feelings of you or me, I imagine there are pro-Israel people that do not necessarily endorse Israel's methods of handling this issue. People who do it for heritage reasons rather than political ones.

It is very easy to turn this whole thing into a campaign against jewish people, which is definitely something a certain sect of people on the internet (if you know what I mean) would absolutely love to capitalize on. So I think it's important to keep a level head, or at least as much as is possible in a situation like this.

So while it sucks, I also think to some degree there are cases like this that must be considered.

I would also like to say that I've kept my distance from Mike Pollock. I've never entirely known what to make of that guy, because while I can respect his desire to not be pestered with fans with memes and whatever else, he also seems like he gets right up to the edge of being kind of rude about it. He gets a very specific kind of "condescending-lite" tone when it comes to pushing back on fans who act a little too friendly with him. It's always felt kind of weird, but I figured if he didn't want to be bothered, then don't bother him.

So that means I'm not going to bat for him, I'm not trying to make excuses for what he's doing, or anything like that. I'm just saying he probably doesn't deserve a lynch mob. I'd like to believe in the goodness of a person than just assume the worst case scenario.

My 3 favourite Java Minecraft shaders

My favorite lite Minecraft shader: Sildurs Enhanced Default

If you have a computer that isn't super duper powerful, but isn't a complete potato either, this is the shaderpack for you. Its pros are: Shadow support, water looks surprisingly nice for such a lite shaderpack, and because it's lite, it's a fantastic shaderpack option for things like Steam Deck. No real drawbacks except it isn't exactly what you would call a "flex" shaderpack. But then again it's not supposed to be. Also no tinted lighting support, but you really shouldn't expect that from something this lite. That said it is a great option for those on a budget but still want eye candy.

Shader that most accurately depicts my idea of an ideal shader: Rethinking Voxels

This shaderpack does something better than any other shaderpack I've ever seen. Actually make the light emitting blocks cast shadows too. Sure other shaderpacks do that too, but none as accurately as what I wanted to see than in this pack. Pros are: Light block shadows (duh), looks fantastic, few bugs (there are some but that is to be expected, none of the bugs are deal breakers tho) and bear in mind that this thing is still in Beta. We could see more, better and less buggy down the line. Bear in mind this still doesn't have tinted lighting support, water is still, and if you're an Optifine user, you may run into problems, as this is optimized for Iris, but that's ok because Iris also works with all the other shaders mentioned so... Maybe stick with Iris for this list~

Prettiest shader: Soft Voxels Lite

I'm gonna be honest and reveal the complete nerd in me... I nearly cried when I saw this shaderpack. This is undoubtedly the most divine looking shaderpack I have ever seen. Playing Minecraft with this is an experience. It's also the most graphics intensive of the bunch, but honestly for what you get, it's not at all bad. Certainly less resource intensive than SEUS, and I'd personally take this look over SEUS anyday. Pros are: So beautiful, tinted lighting that's a delight to look at, lighting is more overpowering depending on what is emitting it (for example lava makes everything burn a deep red) and while it doesn't do light block emitting shadows as well as Rethinking Voxels, it does do them, and it does work in context. Drawbacks are: Water does look a bit funky (if you look closely some parts of the screen can stay unchanged when looking out to the ocean) and supposedly Nether and End support is reserved for the paid version. But honestly, if that doesn't bother you, this is definitely the pack to go for.

Installing linux on apple hardware is a challenge, installing a linux OS without support for the architecture/arm on apple hardware is truly triumph. Well, to be fair, I didn't install Zorin OS onto an M1 Mac. It's running under a UTM (QEmu) Virtual Machine. I am, however, surprised that I got Zorin OS Core running on an ARM Machine, at all. I'm even more surprised that I've done it before anyone has documented it online. There are plenty of questions about an ARM version and M1 Virtualization on Zorin's official forum, but they usually go unanswered. From the initial forum posts I used to get my leverage, most people seemed to conclude that Zorin OS Lite would work just fine, but attempting to install Zorin OS Core over top of Ubuntu Server ARM resulted in dependency issues. I got this issues at first too, but after trying and trying again, I realize that Ubuntu Server 20.04's own repositories didn't contain the app versions that Zorin OS was looking for when attempting to install. I realized that Zorin's devs probably had to implement these in repositories of their own, and I was right. I found the list of official Zorin OS repos and "sudo add-apt-repository"ed about 3-4 of them into Ubuntu Server. After that, "sudo aptitude install zorin-os-desktop" ran without errors, and one reboot later, I was running Zorin OS 16.3 Core on an ARM Virtual Machine.

It's still not perfect. Strange oddities, glitches, and freezes occur here and there. For example, this is the second version of this post I'm writing. During the first draft, the VM froze, and I had to restart it. It just does that randomly, for seemingly no reason. I've added an app to the macOS host to see if it's the external SSD sleeping that's causing this issue, but I don't know, as of right now.

The Software Store (aka package manager) also doesn't seem to work properly. Nothing installs, and I always have to use "sudo aptitude install" to get stuff. I'm assuming, despite being the ARM64 version of Gnome Software, something under the hood is still attempting to install the AMD64 version of apps, causing the weird failures and indefinite stalls.

The main LibreOffice app, for some reason, also didn't appear in the Zorin Menu, and had to be added manually.

Only one of UTM's sound card drivers allowed the audio settings to appear as normal. Everything else eliminated a bunch of sliders in the "Sound" settings and muted the VM on startup. That was pretty annoying because I wanted to hear the Zorin OS login chime. Luckily, the one sound card option fixed all this, but for some reason, the VM occasionally starts up with zero audio. It always does this when I restart, so I always have to shut down and then turn back on to fix it.

I'm sure there's plenty more, but so far that's all I've found. I'm sure a more power user would find other stuff, but I'm really only looked to use Zorin OS as a productivity OS, so I'm not likely to run into much more.

To be fair, though, even with all the weird stuff, it still runs smoother than the native install on my 2011 MacBook Pro, so I'm not complaining. In fact, I'm just happy to be using Zorin OS on my desktop, at all.

Maybe you should look at the current events surrounding my post, the context, you might realise that I am talking about some cunt hiding her transphobia behind some thin veils of “feminism” (not actually feminism). Maybe I’m trying to say “Hey, you see this person advocating against the rights of a demographic (trans women). You see those fascists agreeing with her that trans women are sub-human? Maybe that person’s ideology isn’t actually about feminism? Maybe their ideology is more akin to fascism lite. Fascism but with “real biological women” at the forefront.”

But no, sure, just generalise my statement to more mundane things. Compare transphobia to sex work. Tell me that when fascists agree with radfem transphobia, then this also means that feminists fighting for sex workers are agreeing with the fascists wanting to objectify women in porn. Because obviously feminists and fascists have the exact same intentions behind supporting the porn industry [sarcasm]. Feminists want rights for sex workers. Fascists just want to jack off.

You can call me Midnight. I'm a 24 year old nonbinary trans guy who exclusively uses he/him pronouns. In general I primarily enjoy masculine-coded language more than neutral or feminine. That being said I don't mind a lot of "soft" terms like cute or boy so long as it's not coming from a place of disrespect.

I'm gay, demisexual/Romantic, and greyplatonic. My "gayness" pretty much means (very much simplified) "a lot of men and nonbinary people (terms and conditions apply)". To make a long story short, I apparently have a habit of dating "men" who come out as nonbinary so 😂. I do not feel that any other term truly feels like "me".

I've been out for nearly 9 years now (wild).

On testosterone for more than half that time total (in not mathing that)

I have chronic pain, consider myself disabled, have ADHD, OSDD, amongst other "issues".

My stances kind of show through my DNI and things I post but if there's any confusion or you're worried, I always accept good faith questions in that regard. If you're not sure if you're stepping on my DNI OR if you're not sure If I fit into your DNI or not, feel free to ask and I'll respectfully answer.

That being said, I don't necessarily feel the need to defend or justify myself for a lot of these. Anything I don't want to answer will just get deleted.

*bigots of any kind: racism, ableism, bi/panphobes, transphobia, anti m-spec gays/lesbians or nonbinary gays/lesbians, aphobia, etc.

*endos. Pro-endo OSDDID systems that are going to give me grief about this (if you just wanna vibe idc), I generally don't really care about other OSDDID systems' stances on this so long as they don't push it onto others. So yes, y'all Endo neutrals are safe here since Ive noticed not many blogs are inclusive of people who want to stay tf out of it or hold a more neutral stance.

*TransID. I'm not about pretending to be disabled when you're not, that's disgusting, same for race. "trans age" is way different than age regression or even just SFW age play (pretending to be a different age without it being real regression), and that's gross too. Trans species I don't really care about unless you're using it to justify doing disgusting things.

*I don't want to see gross shit. Adults shipping or defending shipping minor characters with adults is wack to me. That's just p3dophilia "lite". (Legit don't even come at me about "it's only romantic!" Also don't even feel the need to defend a 17 y/o with an 18 y/o. Of course I'm not talking about a ONE YEAR age difference)

* pro self harm blogs of any kind. Idk how prevalent they are anymore or if they're called the same thing but for a specific example, "pro-ana" blogs.

* okay I'll probably get hate for this but: non-intersex, BINARY cishets identifying as gay/lesbian. So binary cishet men identifying as lesbians, binary cishet women identifying as gay (in the mlm way). It feels like fetishizing and that's..gross. again, this is not talking about nonbinary, fluid, or intersex individuals.

*people who condone bullying, harassment, and/or space invasion in order to "punish" people for having a different stance.
