on the topic of allergies i saw in the notes someone saying food allergies "aren't like cat allergies" and goes on to describe an incredibly mild cat allergy. so, heres my experience with dog dander allergy:
for a few years if i entered a house where a dog lived - even if the dog was quarantined to a room or outside the house, and the areas where i hung out were vacuumed right before i visited, and i took extra allergy meds beforehand - within 20 minutes my throat would start to close up.
perhaps do not throw severe animal allergies under the bus in your pursuit for having severe food allergies be recognized. you yourself are minimizing the impact severe animal allergies have on people that have them. "but food allergies can be airborne" this also applies to dander allergies. whats your point.
do you recognize this is the same struggle? people hate to be inconvenienced about the food they can have in common areas and they hate not being allowed to bring their "furbabies" anywhere they go and they are willing to risk our lives about it. they see us all as expendable.

The Unsolved Murder of Henry “Brute” Hanlon and the Box Boy Killer

I’m back, r/LetsTalkTrueCrime! I really appreciated the questions and discussion under my last write-up, and a few of you really encouraged me to keep working to provide a part two to my Serial Killer Box Boy series, so here it is!
In Part One, we looked at the mysterious death of Nathaniel “Nanda” Benson, who died of cardiac arrest due to an undiagnosed heart defect (and likely head trauma played a part) and was found at the bottom of the stairs inside his California home. The only valuable possession missing from his property was his legally-purchased Box Boy, who fled the city wearing Nathaniel Benson’s shoes and using his money to buy a bus and then train ticket.
The last confirmed sighting of the runaway Box Boy (and Benson’s possible killer?) was in Red Hills, California, a large-ish city a couple hours south of Benson’s house by train.
Questions remain around Benson’s death: did he suffer cardiac arrest and fall down the stairs? Did the Box Boy push him, with the shock of the trauma and injury leading to the heart attack that killed him?
Is the Box Boy merely a witness to a tragic but natural death, or the prime murder suspect?
And most importantly: If he wasn’t guilty, why did he run?
Less than a full calendar year after Benson’s death, the question of where the Boxie went after Benson died was answered… but even that answer only opened up more questions, and the sudden death of a second man places even more uncertainty into the story of a Boxie who might simply be an innocent victim - or who could be a serial killer whose makes a victim out of those who give him shelter.
Which leads us to the story of Henry James Hanlon, known to nearly everyone - including his wife - as “Brute”.
Henry Hanlon was born in a small town in Texas, but moved to Red Hills, California after finishing a stint in the Air Force.
His parents, James Hanlon and Estella Hanlon, maiden name Brickers, had had their first child, Henry’s older brother William “Bill”, right out of high school, born six months after their wedding day. Henry came three years later, and his sister Roberta “Bobbie” one year after that.
Henry was a perfectly normal, cheerful little boy, always toddling after his older brother and trying to join in the games of the older kids in town. His parents recalled him as the quintessential “middle child”, always resolving disputes and quietly getting things done. He received his nickname of “Brute” in fifth grade, when a classroom bully was harassing a female friend of Henry’s and Henry decided to take action. The only information I could really hunt down on this was some old school records that I found on a message board, and I can’t really verify if they’re real, but they suggest that the bully was sent home injured and Henry received a three-day suspension.
After that, it seems, anyone and everyone - even teachers - called Henry Hanlon “Brute”, and he never seemed to mind.
He received perfectly average grades, enlisted in the Air Force, served without distinction but without any significant incidents, and afterwards he moved out to California, where he settled into Red Hills (then a city with a thriving industrial district that was slowly beginning its slide into something rougher) and took a job with a manufacturing company, working in their warehouse.
“Brute” dated around a bit, but it wasn’t until three years after his move that he met the woman he would marry, Ellen Patricia Barry. She was a few years younger than him, and they met at a local bar that both were known to frequent. One of Brute’s former coworkers told police that Brute was big into pool and poker, both of which he would engage in when he went to the bar, and that he met Ellen during one of the poker nights, and that Brute stated that how easily she beat him was one of the reasons he was interested in her romantically.
Ellen claims they first spoke while playing pool, not poker, and also claims she’s never played poker in her life. Why Brute would have told his coworkers a different story is unclear.
They dated for about a year before they wed at Grace Baptist Church on a sunny summer day in 20XX. Ellen’s father gave her away while Brute’s little sister was the maid of honor. A year later, Brute’s daughter Elizabeth was born, and a couple years after that, their son Daniel.
The Hanlons lived a charmed life - they owned a cute three-bedroom cottage home (bought and given to them by Ellen’s parents as a wedding gift) in a good part of town with a little white fence around the property and a yard big enough for the children and dog to play in. Ellen was part of the local PTA and active in her church, and Brute himself had the appearance of a man totally content with everything he had.
But Brute Hanlon had a secret.
Ellen continued to believe he was employed by the manufacturing company, but he actually left his employment there years before his death. Instead, he seems to have transitioned into making his money “under the table”. Ellen wouldn’t discover any of this until after his body was located… in a secret house he’d never told her about, in one of the roughest parts of Red Hills.
Without her knowledge, Brute purchased a two-bedroom home with cash directly from its previous owner that was badly in need of repair in the Pauls Mill neighborhood. Once a “company town” from the 1930’s - 1950’s that was absorbed into Red Hills as it grew in the 60’s, Pauls Mill today is the kind of neighborhood where everyone knows if you belong there, or don’t, and it’s best if you belong.
Brute performed a few very cursory repairs to keep it livable, laid down some new carpet, and then used it as a kind of secret base for the unsavory activities he didn’t want Ellen or the children to know about.
While his family believed he was at work at the factory, Hanlon was in fact hosting poker games, selling illicit narcotics and unlicensed firearms, and generally making quite a bit more money than he had with legal employment entirely under-the-table. He would spend his day making connections (and money) through these activities, then go home right at 5 pm sharp to his loving family, eat dinner at 6 pm, help his kids with their homework and hear about their day, and settle in for an evening playing the loving husband and doting dad.
Somewhere during this time period, Brute told Ellen he was setting up a “poker night” with his friends again, now that the kids were school-aged.
What he did instead was drive down to the corner of Holt and McCormick streets, known to all locals as the Red Hills “red light district”, and pick up prostitutes, usually simply meeting with them in his car, but occasionally taking them to a nearby motel.
After his body was found, police showed his picture around to a variety of the individuals who make their living at Holt and McCormick, and more than a dozen locals immediately recognized him.
Some described him as a regular customer who wasn’t particularly special or notable beyond the simple fact that he never tried to renege on payment and could be relied on to always be looking for someone on a particular night of the week… but others, almost entirely male, said he could be violent. A few described being injured enough that they had to seek medical treatment after meeting him. The same individuals stated that he insisted on using dehumanizing and insulting language to speak to them during these encounters, and that he was often unable to perform unless he did so.
One individual, who gave his name as “Mix”, mentioned that the last few times Brute had engaged his services, he had brought along a collar and insisted Mix pretend to be a Box Boy.
During this time period, Brute continued to be an active, involved, and loving parent.
He was home right on time every night except “poker night”, attended his chlidrens’ recitals and baseball games on the weekends. He often took them to the Red Hills Zoo, local parks, and even did a weekend trip to Berras to see the Berras Aquarium, stay overnight in a hotel as a family, and then visit a redwoods park before returning home.
Six months before his death, Brute’s visits to the red light district abruptly stopped. Instead, he apparently met with a local prostitute, engaged his services, and took him home… for good.
The best record we have is that one woman, Needie Brandt, remembered seeing Brute leading a shorter, angular young man to his car one night, and described the young man as “one of those runaway Boxies, collar and all. Poor thing was half-starved”.
Runaways, especially Romantics, are picked up by police from time to time in Red Hills. Most Romantics don’t really know any other way to survive, so prostitution is a common way to make ends meet. Needie said the young man had been seen around the area for a couple of weeks, right alongside the rest of the working people in the red light district, and that after this one night she saw Brute Hanlon lead him into the car, she didn’t see him again.
Asked if she remembered a name, Needie only shrugged and said that even if she did, it wouldn’t be a real one. Which is probably a good point.
Somewhere in here, Brute began to date outside of his marriage while his family believed he was out with friends playing poker. He took dancing lessons with one Susan Krieger, had a serious relationship with a Lucy Graham, and was apparently occasionally taking a Natalie Dorn out for dinner.
Ellen was never informed about these out-of-wedlock interests.
Brute’s family knew nothing. When his eldest son went to state with marching band his freshman year of high school, Brute Hanlon was right there cheering him on.
Then, just two days later, he presumably went right back to brutalizing the Box Boy he was keeping in his secret second home.
We don’t have a record of what exactly transpired within the house after Brute took the runaway Box Boy in. What we do know is what the police found later on.
On October 18th, 20XX, around midnight, Ellen Hanlon called police to report her husband missing after he did not return from his regular poker night. His car was located in the parking lot of an abandoned FoodMart, but a friend of Brute’s came forward to say he often parked there and carpooled with friends when going out.
None of Brute’s possessions were inside, and it didn’t appear the car had been touched by anyone but Brute himself when it was dusted for fingerprints or signs of DNA. Brute’s friends who knew about his secret activities weren’t telling, and Ellen and the children didn’t know anything about their seemingly loving husband and father’s double-life.
At first, the trail seemed like it would go cold, and investigators were frustrated that they had so little to go on.
Then, on October 29th, 20XX, Brute’s neighbor (who apparently asked that his name not be given) called the police department complaining about how the small two-bedroom house next door had begun to smell “like something died in there”, and that he hadn’t seen his neighbor leave or return in days, which was very unusual.
When police arrived, the front door was unlocked. Officer William Keys, the first one inside, later described the smell as “unmistakable. I knew exactly what we’d find the second we walked in that door.”
He was right.
What they found was the bloodied and decomposing body of Henry “Brute” Hanlon, lying on his back in the middle of a small unremarkable living room, on a dirty and stained carpet. He had been viciously stabbed more than fifty times. One even went so far into Brute that there was an exit wound through his back. Medical examiners would later state that at least seven of his wounds would have been directly fatal, but that he had died within the first few and most of the wounds were technically post-mortem.
The murder had been committed by someone who had a very personal reason for the killing. Investigators believe this individual was “absolutely enraged”.
Next to his body was the murder weapon, along with a set of buckles and strips of leather that mystified the officers. These were eventually identified as modified leg braces, but rather than straightening bent or injured legs, they forced the wearer to keep their legs at nearly right angles, which would ensure they had to crawl rather than walk. They appeared to be homemade.
Bloodied smears and footprints led the officers down a hallway and to the bathroom, where there was evidence someone had showered, changed clothes, and then left.
The same neighbor who informed police about the smell also remembered seeing, on October 16th or 17th (later determined that it was likely the 17th, the day that Brute did not return home from “work”), a young man wearing an oversized coat, sweatpants, and a too-large t-shirt walk out of Hanlon’s house and down the street. The young man was on the short side, the neighbor said, had an angular face, and a visible scar at the corner of his mouth and another along the side of his face. He had the collar of the coat flipped up, and the neighbor doesn’t recall if he wore a collar or not.
He had dark eyes, and short but shaggy dark hair that seemed to have been cut hurriedly and unevenly, and he waved at Hanlon’s neighbor without pausing or speaking as he walked past.
Tests on fingerprints and DNA located within Brute Hanlon’s secret second home would reveal that the Box Boy who once ran from Nathaniel Benson after his death was the exact same one who ran from Brute Hanlon after murdering him. The Boxie’s fingerprints were all over the murder weapon… and everywhere else, too.
Within Brute’s home, more knives were found, along with what looked like a badly-crafted homemade whip and some other supplies. A few of the things investigators found appeared to be essentially identical to what was found in Nathaniel Benson’s home. Other things were different (“animalization” was mentioned in some of the reports, but what I’ve been able to find is seriously vague for some reason).
Possibly related, a series of dog leashes purchased from a local pet-supply store were found throughout the home, but there was no evidence of an actual dog. In the home’s main bedroom was a perfectly normal queen-sized bed that was clearly Brute’s, with a small side table, a large dresser, and an attached bathroom.
There was absolutely nothing outwardly out of the ordinary, besides the room being very plain and impersonal. Makes sense, since Brute almost never slept there.
In the second bedroom, however, there was army-style cot with a thin blanket and sheet, three folded shirts on the floor, two sets of bloody metal handcuffs hanging off the cot’s frame at the top and bottom, and a bucket next to the bed. Two metal bowls, clearly of a style meant to be a dog’s food and water bowls, were next to the door. One still had water in it. The window was painted and nailed shut, and bars had been installed over the windows.
Investigators determined the bars were on the house when Brute Hanlon purchased it and had been installed by the previous owner. No reason for that installation was ever given.
Investigation revealed trace amounts of evidence of blood, but nothing much. However, the living room and dining area both showed poorly-cleaned bloodstains that were much older than Hanlon’s murder, including discolored patches on the walls.
A contract for a 24/7 “master/slave” style relationship was found in the top drawer of the dresser, signed ‘Pet’ at the bottom, and with Brute’s name alongside it. However, both signatures match Hanlon’s handwriting, and the Boxie is not believed to have actively signed it, as he would be illiterate at best. Plus, Box Boys are not legally allowed to enter into any contract, anyway, since they can’t understand obligations at that level, so even if he had signed it, it wouldn’t have been considered remotely valid.
I mean, not that those contracts are legal, but... you get my point.
Also located in that drawer were more than one hundred photographs showing the Boxie in a variety of compromising situations and positions. Several of these photos had Brute himself clearly visible in them, and a few had other individuals who have since been identified as Brute’s associates in his more illicit activities.
Interrogations of those associates led to more than seven further arrests for illegal gambling, the production and sale of illicit drugs, and illegal weapons sales. Those interrogations are also how we know about what Brute Hanlon was up to in-between Little League games and Girl Scout meetings.
Those associates claim that Brute kept a “secondhand Box Boy”, muzzled him so he couldn’t speak whenever guests were over, and that often ‘poker night’ simply turned into a game where the assorted guests and Brute himself repeatedly assaulted the Boxie. The associates claimed they thought the entire thing was consensual, but frankly… given the overwhelming evidence that the Boxie had to be kept restrained and was often seriously injured by these assaults... that’s doubtful.
Ellen and her children, who had previously been very visible and spoke often to local news stations about Henry’s disappearance, withdrew after his body was found and his second, secret life revealed - and have never given a single public statement or made a public appearance since.
Ellen moved her children out of Red Hills, moving back in with her own parents, briefly, in northern California. Where they went after that is unknown, but they appear to have left the state and Ellen may have changed her surname. Investigators are firm in their belief that Ellen knew nothing about her husband’s secret life.
I would give my right arm to know what his son and daughter think about it, and if they ever suspected what their devoted dad was up to when he wasn’t at home.
So, what happened to the Boxie after he left the house and disappeared down the block from the witness who saw him?
In short… no one knows for sure.
After murdering Brute Hanlon and cleaning off the evidence that must have been all over him, the Boxie simply fades away. He could have been anywhere, doing anything at all. There is a brief sighting of him on CCTV footage at the local bus station, where he is in line to buy a ticket… and then abruptly looks up, apparently noticing the camera and looking directly into it, then turns and walks quickly away.
The footage is grainy, but the Boxie does appear to be wearing his collar.
He isn’t seen in Red Hills again.
Instead, he reappears one more time before his final murder and disappearance… more than a year later, in a little town right along the border with Nevada.
Part 3 will go into how the investigation into the death of a quiet little oddball named Robert Weber reveals a basement full of skeletal bodies. But our Boxie isn’t the cause.
Instead, Robert Weber’s murder solves a series of related murders police had been stymied by for more than a decade, and a Box Boy who may have been meant to be Weber’s next victim instead turned accidental vigilante with a final killing of his own.
Or maybe I should say, his final killing so far.

A/N: Ok so this is just what I daydream about, and since ima tv addict, I’m involving some “Avatar: The Last Airbender” related things, but a little different. This is more of an introduction to our character but I hope you enjoy!
Pt.1 Pt.2 Pt.3 Pt.4 Pt.5 Pt.6 Pt.7 Pt.8 Pt.9
Summary: It’s Y/N’s first day at UA.....as a “former” villain
“Y/N L/N. She’s a new transfer student. Treat her with your respect and do your best to take care of her.” The tired teacher spoke.
“.......Hey. Please treat me well.” The intimidating girl said as she bowed in respect.
Now if you were to see Y/N on the streets as a stranger, you wouldn’t even think she would have this threatening aura. The class agreed. She’s gorgeous. From a far, you would think she’s a sweetheart, But the girl had a cold, calm stare in her E/C eyes. There was actually no way to describe it. It was just chilling to the bone.
Not only that, but it was clear you were a little rebel. Mainly because of the way you decided to change up your uniform. Your sleeves were torn off to make your button up top some sort of tight fitted turtle neck with a tie that was complimenting your busty figure. Especially since it was tightly tucked into your skirt, pressing against your torso instead of loosely sitting in there like the other girls. You also added a small dark brown belt to cover where your skirt and top meet. Your waist gave the perfect show of how curvaceous you truly were. Your thighs were deliciously thick and your ass must’ve been a perfect peach, considering it caused your skirt to seem a little too small for you. Instead of the typical shoes and knee high socks, you opted for thigh high dark brown leather boots that folded at the top to match your belt. No heel though, of course. Gotta keep it casual. You finished off your rebellious look with a pair of black leather fingerless gloves. Do you look like trouble? Yup. Do you look hot as hell though? You bet.
“You may be seated next to Katsuki Bakugou.” Your new teacher spoke. Before anybody else could give an indication of who this “Bakugou” boy was, an electric blonde spoke up.
“Be careful with that one pretty lady, he’s our resident hot head.” The boy spoke while the entire class giggled.
“Shut it dunce face.” Your eyes shifted from one blonde to another. This time with a spiky head of ash blonde hair and piercing red eyes. As you walk towards your new seat, you made eye contact with the spiky blonde, you saw the look on his face. Just like everyone else, a face of fear and shock, except this time the person didn’t know who you were.
Bakugou could definitely say upon first glance, you were definitely something fierce. It threw him off just how powerful your presence was. He quickly turned away as you took your seat.
As class began, everyone had their eyes on Y/N. Some admiring her beauty, others wary of her aura, and some too nervous to mention their newfound fear of her. In the middle of Mr. Aizawa’s boring lecture, a scratch at the door could be heard.
‘A scratch?’ Everyone thought. But Y/N knew exactly who it was.
When Mr. Aizawa went to open the door, in came what appears to be a wolf-dog. Mr. Aizawa seemed to casually accept it and just expected you to explain. He was too tired to deal with this crazy shit.
“Oh..there you are Rumor. Took you long enough to find this place.” The creature, also somehow intimidating, simply just huffed at the girl and layed down next to her seat in between her and Bakugou.
“L/N, please explain to the class why Rumor is here. They clearly seem to be confused.” Y/N looked around the room to see her new classmates staring at her and her furry friend.
“*sigh* he’s my animal companion.” You simply stated. Apparently it didn’t satisfy your peers because a freckled, green haired boy spoke up.
“Animal companion? Like a service dog?” The timid boy asked. You secretly rolled your eyes at the fact you’ll have to answer this question again. That is until Bakugou spoke.
“You damn nerd, if he was a service dog, she woulda said that now, don’t ‘cha think?” ‘Dunce face and a damn nerd huh? Wonder what new nickname this hedgehog will give me.’ Your little quip made you give the smallest smile with a quiet laugh to yourself
What you didnt realize was that during your little moment, Bakugou was watching you the entire time. He fought the blush that was threatening to rise and successfully won. ‘The hell?’ Bakugou thought. Since when did he blush?
“He’s right. Rumor isn’t my service dog, he’s my animal companion. And no, not my pet. He’s more like a close friend. My best friend if anything. He’s also not a dog either, he’s a changeling.” You explained hoping someone else knew what a changeling was. Thankfully, the “damn nerd” did.
“Changeling? I thought they were just a myth.” He said. “What the heck is a changeling, Deku?” You turned and saw it was a girl with a round face and pink cheeks. ‘Deku? How rude’ you thought to yourself.
“Changelings were rumored to be magical like beasts who could take the form of any animal they chose. Those forms could be as real as eagles and bears or as mythical as dragons and unicorns. They could also change the size of their form too. Am I right, L/N?” Deku asked you.
“You’re completely right, Deku.” The green haired boy blushed at his nickname on your tongue. “Rumor can be any creature I command. His wolf-dog form is his casual form though. It’s the form he took at birth I guess.”
“You guess?” Bakugou asked.
“Yes, I guess. I didn’t have Rumor since he was born. I found him while I was on a walk in the forest. We just clicked, and he followed me home. That’s when I discovered his powers and what he was, and seeing that changelings were only rumored to have existed, I thought it would’ve been a fitting name. We’ve been together ever since, and not only does he work as a friend, he’s a fighter too. He’s like a partner to me which is exactly why principle Nezu allowed him to attend UA with me. I guess you could say he’s part of my...uhm..quirk” You thoroughly explained. You couldn’t help it. You loved talking about Rumor. He was your best friend and definitely one of a kind.
Rumor looked up at you and barked. You turned to pet him on the head and gave him a little smile. Something that didn’t go unnoticed by the resident hot head, which once again caused him to fight back a blush. ‘The fuck is going on with me today?’ The blonde thought to himself. Finally satisfied with the answers, the class picked up where they left off and continued to learn about quirks which didn’t seem all that useful to you since....you don’t have one.
——————————————————————————
Later
“Remember, we will all be meeting at gym gamma tomorrow morning, so don’t bother coming to the classroom. Just meet up there with any comfortable gym wear.” Mr. Aizawa said at the end of the day.
“Yes sir!” The class all said. “L/N stay behind, I need to speak to you and Rumor.” The tired teacher said with a yawn.
“Yes sir.” You calmly replied.
As the class gathered their things to leave, some came up to speak to you. First it was Deku and the round faced girl.
“Welcome to UA L/N. My name is Izuku Midoriya!” Deku said.
“Oh my apologies. I thought I heard that your name was Deku.” You said so nonchalantly with your sweet voice.
“Well it’s just a nickname that started up with Kacchan.” The boy was now blushing in slight embarrassment while rubbing the back of his head.
“Kacchan? I’m sorry, I don’t know who that is.” You said.
“Oh right! My bad, Kacchan is Bakugou. It’s a name I gave him during our childhood.” He stated.
“Seems a little mean.” You chuckled
“Yeah but he’s always been like that.” The boy smiled with a small laugh.
“I think I can tell. He must be really nice to Deku and Dunce face.”
You both shared a laugh at your little sarcastic poke at the explosive blonde that the girl was feeling a little left out.
“Anyways, I’m Ochako Uraraka! I was really hoping I could talk to you more but Deku over here can’t seem to keep his mouth shut.” the girl slightly teased.
“Meh. No worries. We’re gonna be stuck together for the next few years. We have plenty of time to get to know each other.” You so kindly spoke as you gathered your stuff.
“Totally! We can-“ Uraraka was cut off by a very handsome two toned boy with a scar. He definitely reminded you of some you knew. You watched as he came up to speak to Midoriya.
“Hey, Midoriya. Did you want to...” you tuned out his conversation. You simply just stared at him in awe. No doubt about it. He was definitely Dabi’s brother. But he was a whole lot more handsome.
The boy caught onto your staring and introduced himself.
“Hello L/N, my name is Shoto Todoroki. You may know me from my father, Endeavor, but I assure you, I’m nothing like him. In fact it’s safe to say I hate him.” He stated ever so calmly. ‘Wow. So blunt. And I guess hating Endeavor runs in the family’
“Hey it’s fine. I get it, daddy issues.” You nervously laughed but this seemed to strike an interest in Todoroki as he seem to have wanted to continue bashing both of your fathers until he was interrupted by Bakugou.
“You’re in my way Icy-hot.” ‘Jeez, another nickname?’ You thought.
“Then move to another side.” Todoroki quickly came back with.
This caused you to now openly give a quiet laugh, you could already tell what kind of relationship those two have. During your small laugh, Bakugou once again caught himself staring, except this time, he was caught. And it was by you.
You both made eye contact once again. As he stared into your E/C colored eyes, and you stared into his rubied gems, you both grew a slight blush on your cheeks and the 3 standing next to you both took notice.
“Hey..” you sweetly said.
“..........hey.” He replied and quickly looked away embarrassed. That peaceful little moment made your heart stir. Something that hasn’t happened in a long time. If felt calming, loving, happy...and weird and confusing. Thankfully, Dunce face came up to flip the switch.
“Wow Kacchaaannn,” the electric blonde said wiggling his brows. “Never seen you blush like that. You got a little crush on the new gir-“
“SHUT UP SPARK PLUG!” Bakugou exclaimed as he quickly made his way out of the classroom.
“Hey why you gotta be so mean all the time man!” Dunce face cried out.
“I SAID SHUT UP” Bakugou screamed from down the hall. ‘Well he certainly is interesting.....and cute’
“Ah jeez, whatever,” the blonde sighed before you seemed to have caught his attention.
“Well hey there pretty lady,” he started “I’m Denki Kaminari and you are one gorgeous girl. And you definitely got a rockin’ bod-“ he was cut off by our scary teacher.
“That’s enough Kaminari, I need to speak to L/N. Now all of you, out.” He commanded.
They all took their leave thinking about how cool and kind you were. Oh how wrong they were. The little act you put up sure was convincible. Hell, the only thing you genuinely meant was that Todoroki and Bakugou were cute and the blush that came up whenever Bakugou stared at you. You still couldn’t explain it but you brushed it off.
When all were gone, you mentally took notes of their names and possible quirks.
Izuku Midoriya. Alias: Damn Nerd and Deku. Quirk: unknown.
Ochako Uraraka. Alias: unknown. Quirk: unknown.
Shoto Todoroki. Alias: Icy-hot. Quirk: possibly related to cold and heat
Denki Kaminari. Alias: Dunce Face and Spark Plug. Quirk: possibly related to electricity
Katsuki Bakugou. Alias: Kacchan. Quirk: unknown
“L/N.” Your teacher snapped you out of your quick thought and got you focused.
“You seemed to be very comfortable with telling them about Rumor.” Mr. Aizawa said with an eyebrow raised.
“Well he is my best friend. I could go on and on about Rumor for hours if people didn’t stop me. And you can’t lie, he is pretty interesting. Especially his fighting style. You would know all about that, wouldn’t you....Eraser Head?” You said with a sinister smile.
You were well aware that Aizawa knew Rumor’s capabilities very well. You were also aware he knew much about yours too. I mean, you both have fought each other before. And one of you almost didn’t make it out alive. Hint hint, it wasn’t you.
“You are to address me as Aizawa Sensei or Mr. Aizawa, Titania.” He sternly said.
“Ouch, the villain name? I thought the past was the past. There’s a good inside me, dont you remember? You were the one who said it after all. You were even the one who recommended an S-Class villain like me should join UA.” You snidely replied.
*flashback*
As you fought against the skilled pro, you could tell he was getting weaker and weaker by the second. You used your air bending to push him back, crushing him into the wall, and keep him far away. Before you could send Rumor in to finish the job, a hand on your shoulder stopped you.
“Kurogiri? What are you doing here?” You stopped fighting and quickly turned to your superior in a fearful and shaky manner. Although you were much stronger than him and could easily take him down, you knew better. Your mind had already been so manipulated into thinking you were the weakest villain in the league, when it reality, you were strong enough to take down Shigaraki in a snap...but you didn’t need to know that.
Eraser Head, too tired and beaten to even pick himself up off the ground watched the interaction from the distance.
“You were told to collect intel, not fight a pro.” The black fog stated.
“Well yes, but he tried to stop me an-“ he silenced you with a smack to the face. Kurogiri was a respectful man...in ways...but he was just following orders on how to treat Y/N.
“If he tried to stop you, you run away.” He said, matter of factly.
“But he-“ once again, he cut you off but this time with a louder voice.
“But nothing! You were to gather intel and report back to base. Not fight. If you got into trouble, you are to run away, and use your bending and Rumor as assistance.” He stated.
“Yes sir. I’m sorry sir.” You said with your head bowed down in dishonor.
Aizawa could already tell from afar how controlled you were. In past fights, he’s noticed how you were so quick to succumb to any villain in the league, and you were always so willing to go back to them no matter how many times you could’ve ran away on your own. It was like they had something you needed, or more so it was them that you needed. For survival, perhaps?
“Did you even gather the information we needed?” Kurogiri asked.
Your silence gave him all the answers he needed. With a disappointing glare he reached for you, when you flinched at just the slighted movement, Aizawa knew something was wrong. Yes you were a villain, but it was clear you were also a manipulated child. So he acted quick, and attacked Kurogiri, knocking him out, and grabbed you. Before you both took off, you threw one of your earrings at kurorgiri’s unconscious body, knowing he’ll know what to do once he sees it. As he ran with you, he took notice of the animal behind him that followed you. When he finally landed on a cliff hanging over the city, he placed you down to sit on the grass and looked at you before speaking.
“I can see it. All of it. They’re controlling you aren’t they?” The pro-hero spoke.
“Excuse me? Nobody is controlling anybody! I choose to follow orders!” You yelled as Rumor came up to you.
“What is that thing?” Aizawa asked.
“He’s my friend and you won’t harm him!” You said while grabbing onto Rumor.
The pro took note of that word you used. Friend. Villains don’t have friends, they don’t have anybody but goons and partners in crime. Literally. You were definitely different compared to these other villains.
“I have no intentions on harming you or your friend.” The pro spoke.
“So what do you want with me.”
“....Simple. I want you to go to school, live in the dorm rooms, eat good food, train more to become better as a person and fighter, and make more friends. I see a good in you Titania, you deserve a good life. Not one controlled by villains where you do their bidding for what? Survival?” Aizawa said as he crossed his arms while looking at you.
You were in shock. He was able to figure you out. Well, he figured out why you were with the league. Survival. But it doesn’t matter, you were so brainwashed that you were convinced anyone outside the league wanted to kill you...at least that’s what the LOV told you.
“I don’t want to go to school, I want to go back home to the league.” You said while looking down and holding onto your furry friend.
“Home? UA could give you a better home.”
You looked up in shocked at his words. He wanted you to attend school at UA? You know that place. That’s the one place where the league has been so invested in ever since All Might joined the staff there. Suddenly, an idea came into thought. You knew exactly how you were gonna get into the league’s good graces and out of the cold shadow.
“UA?....That’s where you want me to go? How the hell am I supposed to get in there? I’m a known villain genius.” You sarcastically said.
“A villain hidden behind a full face mask. People don’t know your true identity, and did you ever think that maybe the league wants it that way?” He said
“Are you saying you know who I truly am?” You questioned him.
“No, but that doesn’t matter right now. If you want to go to UA, I can help you. I’m a teacher there and I can put in a good word for you. Sure it will take a lot of convincing but I’m willing to do it. Using UA as a reformatory program for you could be benefitting you in more ways than one. So if going to UA is what you really want, I’m more than happy to help you Titania.”
You couldn’t believe it. Your heart was so excited. You were finally going to get away from this horrible life of crime and killing. Away from the abuse and blood. Away from the league. But your brain was telling you to deny it all. You were safer with the league, everyone is out to get you, and you will die without the villains help. But a bark broke you out of thought.
You turned to your side to see what seems to be a smile on Rumor’s face. He was wagging his tail and sticking his tongue out while giving you puppy dog eyes. It appears he knew what was going on and he seemed excited. For your best friend, the world. So you gave in...happily.
“Y/N.” You said while getting up off the ground.
“Huh?” The pro spoke.
“My name is Y/N L/N, and I’d be happy to join UA.” You said with a smile and tears of joy filling you eyes. Rumor happily barked at the pro as well.
“Well alright then,” the pro said sticking out his hand for you to shake, “Y/N L/N, welcome to UA.”
As you shook his hand your smile held a thousand words. Happiness, excitement, villainy, and sin. Sure you were going to benefit yourself, but you were also going to benefit the league.
*Present Time*
“I was hoping I’d get more respect from you considering I was the one who got you into UA,” Aizawa tiredly said while turning his head towards the ceiling and crossing his arms. “But I guess that mischief and attitude just comes with the deal.”
“Correct.” You simply said.
“So are you willing to tell them what your “quirk” is? You seemed so open about Rumor, I thought your powers would be the same.” Aizawa pressed on.
“Not sure yet. I only just met the students. They seem nice.” You said while looking at your now very interesting shoes.
“They’re a crazy bunch, but they’re incredible friends. They could be great friends to you too Y/N.” You looked back up at him with hope, but quickly remembered why you were there in the first place.
The teacher took noticed of this and continued. “Either way, they’ll have to see what you got tomorrow. In gym gamma we’ll be doing some sparring including our quirks, so you’ll have to show them all that you can do.” He said.
He saw how that made you nervous. Not because you were scared to speak about or show your abilities, but because you knew you would be hit with thousands of questions. Oh how annoyed you must be.
“Understood.” You said to him as if you were a soldier. He won’t get used to that. He’ll have to make sure you know it’s ok to speak to people as..well people, and not like everyone is your superior.
“Good,” he began to walk to his yellow sleeping bag to pick it up, “now head to the front of the school. I left an escort for you to help guide you to your dorm room. That person will also be a guide in all things UA for you so be nice. You’ll be stuck with them for awhile. That is all, you can go now.”
As you and Rumor made your way to the front, you had so many questions going on in your mind. Should you make new friends or keep them at a distance? Should you completely drop the league and join UA? Should you blow your cover and expose why your truly there? What to do, what to do.
When you made it to the front, you finally saw your escort, and you couldn’t help but give a little smirk.
“Hey..”
A/N: If y’all wanna see the clothes that inspired Y/N’s uniform, check this out!!!
A/N: Damn guys, I know I’ve only just started writing but this is kinda the story I imagine in my mind at night. So I thought it would be fun to give it to reality. So here’s my first FanFic😅 hopefully it doesn’t turn out too terrible, but I promise to work on my skills and improve. Also, if you need a reference to what Y/N’s uniform looks like, search up “Akame from Akame Ga Kill.” That’s the look that heavily inspired Y/N’s new uniform. And if you’re confused on what the boots look like, search up “Lucy Heartfilia thigh high boots,” bc those are the EXACT boots I imagine on Y/N except in a darker brunette color to match the belt. Once again, NOT spell checked so my apologies for any mistakes. I hope you enjoyed pt. 1! And if this goes well, tell me if you’d like a pt. 2! I love to hear feedback! Thx <3

Writer’s Month Prompts Day 12
Day 12: Eight
Another prompt picked out by me! Hope you guys enjoy!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Eight Times Heather Came Through For the Gang, and One Time They Came Through For Her
#1:
“I need to ask you something,”
Wariness traveled through Heather at Judy’s statement. “What?”
“Well, you know today’s Halloween,”
“Yeah…” How could Heather not know today was Halloween? She could never forget.
“Both Brad and I can’t take Fred trick or treating this year… Do you think you could take him?”
Heather paused, and her hand tightened slightly around the phone. On the one hand, she knew how much Fred loved Halloween. On the other hand… she never went out of her house on Halloween night if she could help it. She just couldn’t face the night unless she was in her home, surrounded by her flowers and assured by her wind chimes and the cross made of rowan she kept on her door. She couldn’t risk it.
Judy seemed to sense her reluctance, because she quickly said, “I know you don’t like going out on Halloween night, so if you don’t want to do it I can call Uncle Bobby—”
“Your Uncle Bobby?” Heather’s nose wrinkled. Judy’s Uncle Bobby taking Fred? The one who called her a Satan worshipper and went into passionate rants about how the Democratic Party would ruin this nation and would definitely make sure Fred didn’t get the chance to enjoy his trick or treating experience? Absolutely not. “No, I’ll do it.”
“You will? But I thought—”
“I know. But your Uncle Bobby taking Fred instead of me is the worse alternative. I’ll do it.”
Judy laughed. “Okay. Thanks, Heather.”
Heather smiled a bit. “Sure, Judy.”
#2:
Heather led Daphne into the bathroom, Velma at their heels, and sat her down. “It’s okay, Daphne,” she reassured the distraught girl. “We can clean it up. It’s okay.”
“I just don’t know what happened!” Daphne said, trying to hold back tears so she wouldn’t ruin her makeup. “I shouldn’t have been holding that glass while I was walking.”
“The glass isn’t the problem, Daphne,” Velma said to her matter-of-factly. “The problem is someone tripped you.”
“I saw that too,” Heather agreed. “Velma, can you get me some towels so we can clean this up?”
She was helping to dab at the stain on the front of Daphne’s dress when the door opened and the sound of clacking heels filled the bathroom. “Daphne, oh my gosh.” They looked up to see her cousin Daisy holding napkins. “Are you okay? I got you towels. It’s horrible how someone tripped you like that.”
Heather narrowed her eyes at the girl. “How did you know someone tripped her? We barely saw anything.”
Daisy blinked, staring at her. “I’m sorry, who are you?”
“You don’t have to know.” Heather stood up. “How would you know someone tripped Daphne…” she turned to Daphne questioningly for the name.
“Daisy,”
“Daisy.” She turned back to her and crossed her arms. “Unless you were the one that did it?”
Daisy looked for a moment like a deer caught in headlights. “I…” She gave a scoff of a laugh. “Listen, lady, you’re crazy. Everyone knows I would never do that.”
“You wouldn’t…” Daphne stood up. “Unless you knew you wouldn’t get caught. You’ve been out to get me for years, Daisy, don’t even lie.”
Heather laughed. “Oh, isn’t this funny,” she turned back to Daisy, smirking. “The spiteful cousin that appears to be a perfect angel to hide how rotten she is. How predictable. I knew there was something wrong with you.”
Daisy stared at her for a moment, then an arrogant look appeared on her face. “Oh yeah? Well you think they’re going to believe you? An old lady, my ditzy cousin, and her friend? I don’t think so. Now get out of my way, old woman. I need to touch up my makeup.”
“Oh, I don’t think so.” Heather’s smile turned deadly. “You aren’t as smart as you think you are.” Her hand shot out to grab Daisy’s wrist and pulled her closer. “You underestimate what I can do. If you ever try to humiliate Daphne again, you better pray to your God I don’t hear about it. Because I can and I will permanently scar that pretty face.” She smiled. “Okay?” She let go of Daisy’s wrist. “Now get out of our way, little girl.”
Daisy looked like she wanted to be defiant, but then stepped to the side so Daphne, Heather, and Velma could walk out of the bathroom. Daphne grabbed her arm. “Thanks, Heather. No one’s ever stood up to Daisy for me like that before.”
Heather smiled at her. “Anytime, Daphne.”
#3:
Velma came running towards her as she came walking down the hallway towards the group of kids. “Heather, thank goodness. We only have an hour left before we need to show off our project.”
“Okay, just show me the way so we can figure this out,” Heather left Velma spin around and run back to the Science Olympiad group.
“Guys, this is Heather, the woman I told you would help us.”
One of them, who looked like a stereotypical nerd found in a teen high school movie, eyed Heather skeptically. “She doesn’t look scientifically inclined,” he stated, looking at her leather jacket, jeans, and Motley Crue t-shirt.
Heather shrugged, smiling. “Sorry I don’t look the part. But I’m the best you’ve got, so lead the way to the broken project.”
As the group walked down the hallway to their designated classroom, Velma tugged on her sleeve. “Thank you for doing this. No one else could make it.”
“You’re welcome, Velma. I’ll help the best I can.”
#4:
Heather raised an eyebrow and looked down at the list in her hand. “I think we’ve got everything… except the marshmallow fluff,”
“Like, that shouldn’t be too hard to find!” Shaggy said cheerfully. “I know where it is, too.”
“Lead the way, my man,” Heather laughed.
The trio, consisting of Heather, Shaggy, and Scooby, headed out of the grocery store aisle and went down to the right one to get the marshmallow fluff. Why Shaggy and Scooby needed marshmallow fluff, Heather had no idea. Then again, she was usually lost when they were saying what they put in their crazy sandwiches.
Shaggy checked the shelf. “Aw, man!” he groaned. “Like, there’s no marshmallow fluff!”
Scooby’s head dropped. “Raw…”
“They have strawberry fluff,” Heather pointed to the jars on the shelf. “Why don’t we get that?”
Shaggy and Scooby looked at her with utterly appalled looks. “Like we can’t use the strawberry fluff!”
“Reah!” Scooby agreed. “Re need marshmallow ruff!”
“Excuse me,” They all turned around at the voice, and saw a grocery store employee standing behind them, looking stern. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to ask you to bring your dog outside. There are no pets allowed in the store.”
“Rog?” Scooby looked around. “Rhere?”
“But like, Scooby’s a trained dog!” Shaggy protested.
Before the employee could say anything, Heather jumped in, flashing him a smile. “He’s very well trained. And he’s a service dog.” She reached into her purse and pulled out her wallet, and took out a service dog identification card to show him.
The employee looked at the card, then sighed. “Well, we do allow service pets… Sorry about that. Carry on.”
Once he was out of earshot, Shaggy and Scooby turned to her in confusion. “But like, Scooby’s not a service dog.”
“True,” Heather said as she put the card back in her wallet, smiling. “But he doesn’t know that.” She winked at them. “C’mon, let’s go pay. I think I have some marshmallow fluff at my house.”
Shaggy and Scooby looked at each other, grinned, then followed her. “Dude,” Shaggy said to Scooby, “Heather’s like, totally awesome.”
“Reah, rawesome,”
#5:
Heather was watering her plants when a sudden rapid banging on the door made her jump. She exhaled heavily, setting down her watering can. “What the hell…?”
When she opened the door, immediately crashing through to land in a heap on her floor was… four teenagers and a Great Dane? She frowned in confusion, then raised an eyebrow when she saw a familiar blonde head in the pile. “Fred?”
Fred raised his head and smiled. “Hey, Aunt Heather! Sorry to barge in like this.”
A redhead teen girl raised her head and looked around. “Jeepers! It’s like Flower Central in here!”
“Thank you,” Heather said as they all worked to untangle themselves. “I try.” She crossed her arms. “So, care to explain why four kids and a dog just crashed into my foyer?”
“Oh, right,” Fred got up and dusted himself off. “Gang, this is my aunt, Heather McMann. Aunt Heather, this is Daphne,” the redhead, “Velma,” a brunette in an orange turtleneck, “Shaggy,” a lanky boy in a green shirt, “and Scooby Doo,” the Great Dane. “They’re my friends.”
“Sorry to barge in on you,” Velma said politely, “but Fred said you were close by and could help us hide.”
Heather raised her eyebrow. “Hide from what?”
“Like, hide from the monster!” Shaggy quivered.
“Reah! Ronster!”
Heather blinked. Did… Did Scooby Doo just talk? What? “Monster?”
“We’ll explain in a second. But we need a favor,” Fred said to her. “Can we hide out here for the night? Just for the night, I swear. The Mystery Machine’s in your driveway.”
Heather had many questions. But then again, it seemed to be urgent. So she shrugged. “Sure. You’ll have to camp out in my living room. There’s extra blankets in the closet upstairs.”
Fred smiled in relief. “Thanks, Aunt Heather.”
“No problem. Get the blankets, and I’ll go make tea.”
As she was headed down the hallway to the kitchen, she heard Fred say gleefully, “See, guys? Told you we could count on Aunt Heather.”
#6:
“… And the coconuts will launch from this catapult, setting off the hooks for the carpet, which will fall right on the freaky conquistador and capture him!”
“Great plan, Freddy,” Daphne said.
“All we need now is…”
Shaggy suddenly tapped Velma on the shoulder resignedly, stopping her from continuing. “Live bait,” he finished, sighing. “Like we’ll save you the trouble. C’mon, Scoob.”
“Good luck, guys,” Heather called as they left the room.
“Okay, everybody hide,” Fred instructed.
All too soon, the four heard screaming from the hallway, and Shaggy and Scooby came barreling through the entrance. “Like he’s coming this way!” Shaggy shouted out, before he and Scooby crashed into a wall after skidding to a stop too late.
“And 3… 2… 1!” Fred pulled on the rope to spring the trap. But nothing happened. He pulled again. “What the heck? My trap’s not working!”
Heather looked around, and spotted the knight’s armor standing on the rack in the corner. An idea popped into her head and she went to pull off one of the arms. Then she ran to the doorway and stood to the side. When the conquistador ghost came running through, snarling, she swung the arm and hit him right in the stomach, sending him to the floor groaning in pain.
She placed her boot on his back and grinned at the gang. “I got him!”
Everyone came out of their hiding places. “Good thinking, Heather,” Velma congratulated. “Now, let’s see who this conquistador ghost really is.”
#7:
“So let me get this straight, you’ve been waiting for an hour?” Heather questioned over her phone as she went to grab her purse. “Why didn’t Fred come pick you up?”
“We told him to!” Daphne insisted. “We made sure he knew to come pick us up at four!”
“I bet he forgot,” Heather heard Velma say over the phone.
Heather sighed. “Okay, I’ve got my purse and I’m heading out the door right now.”
“Thanks, Heather. You’re a lifesaver.”
When Heather pulled her car up to the mall, she sent a text to Daphne to say she was there. When they walked out of the entrance, she honked her horn and stuck her hand out the window to wave it. They ran over and pulled open the doors to get inside.
“Thanks for coming, Heather,” Velma said gratefully.
“No problem. You girls okay?”
“We’re fine,” Daphne nodded. “I texted Freddy and said you were picking us up.”
“Good decision. Call him right now so I can lecture him about remembering things.”
Laughing, Daphne pulled out her phone. “Okay,”
#8:
“What are you kids doing here?”
The gang froze at the stern voice, and turned around to see a security officer behind them with his arms crossed. “This area is for authorized personnel only!”
“But we’re here to solve the mystery,” Fred tried to explain, hoping Heather would meet up with them again soon. She seemed to have a way with authority figures. “You can ask Mr.—”
“Yeah, yeah, sure. There is no mystery to be found here, Scarf Boy.”
“It’s an ascot—”
“I don’t care!” the officer pointed to the door down the hallway. “Get your butts out of here!”
“There you are!”
The gang sighed in relief and turned to find Heather making her way towards them. “I’ve been looking all over for you! Come on, we have places to be.” She got in front of her gang and flashed a smile at the security officer. “I’m sorry I left my nephew and his friends unsupervised. But I’m sure they told you they’re allowed back here. They’re trying to solve this mystery. And you are…?”
“… Just a security officer, ma’am. You’re sure they’re allowed back here?”
“Oh yes. The head of security said so, you can ask him.”
“Well, I will. Don’t let them out of your sight.”
“You got it,”
As soon as the security officer was out of earshot, Heather’s smile disappeared and she sighed. “You know, I should just start coming along with you kids for all of your mysteries. You get into more places when I’m here somehow.”
“You’re pretty charismatic,” Velma offered. “Maybe that’s why adults listen to you.”
“Or like, maybe because she’s also like, an adult,” Shaggy guessed.
“Either way, thanks for stepping in,” Fred thanked her. “He was about to throw us out.”
Heather smiled. “Well, we can’t have that. Not when there’s a mystery to be solved. Have you found any clues?”
And with that, the mystery continued, with Heather in tow the rest of the way.
+1:
“Like, comin’ through!”
Starchild stepped to the side and raised an eyebrow as Shaggy and Scooby strode past. Shaggy had a tray of food in his hands, while Scooby was balancing one on his head. “What are you two doing?” he asked.
“Like we made some snacks for Heather while she rests,” Shaggy displayed the food tray to him. “Fred, Daphne and Velma are doing stuff for her too.”
Starchild smiled in amusement. Heather had gone with them back to Earth for an emergency situation, and had gotten banged up pretty hard in the ensuing fight. The gang had insisted on coming back to KISSteria with them to make sure she got enough rest. “That’s nice of you. I was on my way to check on her myself, mind if I join?”
“No problemo!” Scooby said cheerfully.
The three of them set off through the Temple to Heather’s bedroom. “What exactly did you make her?” Starchild asked.
“Well we knew she doesn’t like our triple decker Scooby Snack with ice cream and chocolate sauce sandwich,” Shaggy said, and Starchild didn’t even want to think about how unhealthy that probably was, “so like we made her Super Shaggy Sandwiches with less layers instead.”
“Rand riss ralls!” Scooby showed his tray to Starchild, that was laden with small oat and date balls with coconut.
“Right, Scoob, and bliss balls! Like she loves those.”
“That’s really nice of you, guys,” Starchild said, smiling.
Shaggy shrugged. “Well, like, she’d do the same for us,”
“Reah,”
When they arrived at Heather’s room, they stopped upon seeing the rope, wires, and other trap materials on the floor. Fred was standing in front of the pile, mumbling to himself. “The Van Buren Paradigm would work… but what if the person’s not an intruder and just wants to check on her…”
“Like Fred, what are you doing?” Shaggy asked.
“Oh, I’m just building a trap for Aunt Heather’s room,” Fred replied casually.
Shaggy and Scooby nodded, this clearly being a common thing to hear. But Starchild did not consider that a common thing to hear. “You’re booby-trapping her room?” he asked. “Why?”
“You know, so she stays safe while she rests,” Fred replied matter of factly. “Duh,”
“But what if someone just wants to check on her?”
“That’s what I’m trying to figure out right now,”
“Like, can we still get inside?”
“Oh yeah, sure.” Fred stepped aside to let them pass. “I’m just trying to look out for my aunt, that’s it.”
“No, I get that.” Starchild grinned at him. “That’s pretty nice of you, Frank.”
“It’s Fred!”
Starchild ignored him and followed Shaggy and Scooby through the door. When they entered, they found Velma sitting with Heather on her bed while Daphne was taking plants out of a cardboard box. “Like, we’re back!” Shaggy sang, setting his tray down on the table and grabbing hold of Scooby’s.
“Hey, boys,” Heather greeted. She smiled at Starchild. “Hi, Starchild. As you can see, my room’s been taken over.”
“I can see that,” Starchild laughed. “What’s going on?”
“I’m decorating this room,” Daphne informed him. “It’s too drab in here!”
“It’s simple!” Heather argued.
“It’s drab!”
Heather sighed heavily. “Fine, I don’t care,”
Starchild looked down at all the books stacked on the floor next to Heather’s bed. “Did you get those from the library?”
“Yep,” Velma nodded. “I figured I would get some reading material so she wouldn’t be bored.”
“With this many books, I’m not going to be bored,” Heather smiled at her.
“I’m also going to brush out and braid your hair,” Daphne said over her shoulder as she hung up paper lanterns with lotus flowers painted on them. “You never do anything with it.”
“If you insist,” Heather said, sighing and shaking her head. But there was a fond smile on her face.
“Like, we made snacks!” Shaggy said proudly, displaying the two trays. “We made sandwiches and bliss balls!”
Heather perked up. “Bliss balls?”
“Ruh huh!” Scooby nodded his head. “Riss ralls!” He licked his lips.
Velma stood up. “I’ll get you a plate. You stay here.”
“I can get it myself, Velma—”
“No. I’ll get it.”
Heather sighed and sat back on her bed as Velma went to get a plate for her. But an affectionate smile soon drifted onto her face. Smiling, Starchild went over to stand next to her. “Did you know Fred’s setting up a trap outside your room?”
“Yeah, he told me before he went outside. He insisted, said he just wanted to make sure nothing happened to me.”
“They’re all looking out for you,” he remarked. “They’re good kids.”
“Yeah,” Heather smiled at the gang. “They are.”

Okay so here is the real meat of the story. I’ve excited for getting to this part. So here’s the fourth chapter of “The Mess”.
_____________________________________
Jester was on the list of the three nicest things in Caleb’s life. Number one was Frumpkin, of course, but Nott and Jester tied for second. He didn't deserve any of them, but Nott knew exactly what she was getting into though Caleb would never blame her for getting rid of him. And he allowed himself to have Frumpkin since he saved Frumpkin, so he did do one good thing for Frumpkin. But Jester didn't deserve this.
And yet Caleb couldn't bring himself to push her away. True, it was Frumpkin that Jester was friends with and not Caleb, but Caleb didn't have to hang around when Jester was visiting Frumpkin. He could easily just give Jester his cat and go study, but instead Caleb would hang around and pretend that he was the one who was friends with Jester. That she actually liked him.
Jester could brighten any room and never complained once whenever Caleb would tell her all about his chemistry projects or the latest discoveries in the field. Instead, she would always look interested and attentive even when she admitted that she didn't have a clue what Caleb was talking about. And in turn she would tell him all about her sculptures and show them to Caleb.
"I could never do that," Caleb said.
"I couldn't imagine not making art," Jester said. "It's like I've got all these words trapped inside of me that I can't really say out loud or something, so my art says it for me."
Caleb gave it some thought. "It must be nice. I have trouble with words sometimes."
"You should make something then! Express yourself in art," Jester said excitedly.
"I wouldn't know what to make. I've got nothing important to say," Caleb said.
Jester shook her head. "You can't think like that. Everyone has something important in them even you. I mean it might just be that Frumpkin is the greatest cat ever, but that's something that people should know."
Caleb smiled despite himself. "I think that's already pretty obvious."
"But you can have some kind of lasting momument to him. Art can survive a lot longer than words. That's part of what I like about it. Anyone could know what it means."
"That must be nice."
Jester grinned and nodded. "It is. Oh, I can get you some clay! Nothing fancy but something you can squish and play with and make a little Frumpkin. I bet he'd love it."
"How about you make one of him for him?" Caleb suggested.
Jester pouted. "But you're his favorite person. It would mean a lot more coming from you."
"Do you really thik I'm his favorite?" Caleb asked. He couldn't really be anyone's favorite anything.
"With how close he keeps to you? There's no way he could like anyone more," Jester said.
A warm feeling came over Caleb. "Danke."
"Hey, it's the truth. If Frumpkin could talk he would tell you." Jester stretched. "So new semester starts pretty soon. Do you know your schedule yet?"
Caleb blanched he didn't like thinking about his upcoming classes. "Yes."
"Not a good one I take it?" Jester asked.
"It's not bad presay, but I have one of my old professors from before I got sick and I haven't seen him since then," Caleb said. "He was a bit of a mentor for me and part of why I chose to go here. I've always admired his work."
"Really? Then why are you so nervous?"
Caleb started to pet Frumpkin trying to keep steadying. "I don't want to disappoint him. I had dropped out of his class when I got sick." Caleb couldn't remember much of that semester it was a blur with a couple of exceptions.
“Oh,” Jester said softly. “Well, you’re better now. And you’ve got Frumpkin.”
Frumpkin mewed at his name. “Ja, I have Frumpkin.”
“So everything’s going to be fine.”
****************
Caleb nervously stood by the door to Professor Ikithon’s classroom. There were nine minutes till the class started, and he didn’t want to go in until six minutes before class starts. Frumpkin had his leash on though he hadn’t left Caleb’s shoulders once that day. It had been years since Caleb had last seen Professor Ikithon and he just couldn't shake this feeling of apprehension. But he used to be close to Professor Ikithon. He remembered that much. The details were just missing.
A loud sneeze interrupted his thoughts. Caleb turned to see one of his neighbors standing near him. The man with the thick Port Damali drawl. Fjord. "You bring your cat to class?" Fjord asked. Jester was friends with Fjord and Caleb had seen them in the hall a couple of times and Jester had managed to convince Caleb to introduce himself to Fjord. Fjord seemed nice enough, but he was allergic to cats which was a major blow to him in Caleb's esteem.
"Ja, he helps me focus," Caleb said.
"Just sit on the other side of the classroom." Fjord sneezed again.
Caleb nodded. It seemed like a reasonable request to him. He didn't want to cause any trouble with Frumpkin. Finally it was six minutes to class and a reasonable time to enter the classroom. Fjord followed him and made sure to be on the exact opposite side of the class.
Proffessor Ikithon arrived two minutes before the class started. He sneered when he saw Frumpkin. "What is this doing here?"
"This is Frumpkin," Caleb said. "He helps me focus and stay calm. I, I was looking forward to having you again, Professor Ikithon."
"It has been a long time. It seems like the years have changed you for the worse."
Caleb winced. He should have realized that it was obvious to anyone with eyes that he was a complete screw up, especially compared to how he once was. "I-" But Caleb couldn't think of any explanation. There was none except for that he was sick and a failure.
"I will not tolerate any distractions in my classroom," Professor Ikithon said.
"He's quieter than a mouse and just stays in my lap. No one will see him or hear him." On cue, Frumpkin jumped down on to Caleb's lap and curled up small on it.
Professor Ikithon smirked. "But you will notice him and I will know that it is here and it will distract me."
"My therapist says that it's okay for me to have him as a service animal. That it's not that different from needing a seeing eye dog or a mobility pony. He makes up for what my brain's not able to make itself," Caleb said parroting what Dr. Trickfoot told him.
"That is just an excuse for weakness," Professor Ikithon said. "If you were actually trying, you wouldn't need it. Now, I refuse to allow any distractions in my classroom. Get rid of him."
Caleb froze and it felt like there was no oxygen in the room. "What?"
"Take that thing out of here."
Caleb held onto Frumpkin. "Sir, please. He won't be a distraction. He's been in other classes and hasn't caused any distractions."
"It's true," a tall, pale woman said. She had been in other classes with Caleb, but he didn't know her by name. "I've forgotten that he was there most of the time."
"Well, I won't. If you clearly won't take care of the problem, then I will simply have to take care of it myself." Professor Ikithon roughly grabbed Frumpkin by the middle and tossed him out of the classroom before slamming the door keeping him out.
It was like everything was in slow motion around Caleb. The blood drained from his face and he felt like he was going to be ill. Frumpkin meowed outside the door and Caleb could hear him clawing at it. Professor Ikithon started speaking, and Caleb was taken over by a wave of fear. It was drowning him and not a single word of Ikithon’s lecture made it through Caleb’s ears. Caleb could feel himself shaking and trembling, but it was like it wasn't his body and he had no control. And the whole time a smug smile was on Professor Ikithon's face.
**************
Jester's first day of the new semester was going great. She had her favorite professor again and he agreed to be her advisor for her upcoming art show. The Traveler was very avante garde and never complained about Jester's style being too weird(his name really wasn't the Traveler, but no one could pronounce his real name so he just went by his nickname). And the rest of her classes went really good too. It was going to be her best semester yet, she just knew it.
As she was going back to her apartment, Jester noticed Fjord was also heading in the same direction. She ran to catch up to him and it wasn't until she caught up to him that she noticed the person next to him. They were hunched over themselves and looked like they were in pain or something. It took Jester a moment to realize that it was Caleb. He was clutching Frumpkin close to his chest and looked close to tears.
Tears were actually running down Fjord's face and his nose was dripping too. He sneezed loudly. "Jester, oh thank the Wildmother you're here. Can you take him back to Nott's place?"
"Sure, um did something happen?" Jester asked.
"Professor Ikithon declared his class was a cat free zone and I think he," Fjord pointed at Caleb, "broke. The professor just took his cat and yeeted him out of there. Honestly, having the cat in the class would've been less distracting than Caleb's panic attack."
Jester stomach sunk. "Cat-free? But Caleb needs Frumpkin."
"I kinda figured that out," Fjord said. "I'm allergic to cats and even I thought that it was a bit harsh. But Professor Ikithon has a reputation of being strict. Can you take Caleb back to the apartment? I really need to get away from this cat."
"Oh sure." Jester waved Fjord goodbye and turned to Caleb. He looked completely miserable and held to Frumpkin like he was his final lifeline. "How you doin' Caleb?"
Caleb didn't say anything or moved only staring straight forward.
"Want to go home?" Jester asked.
Caleb barely nodded, but at least it was something.
Slowly Jester guided Caleb back to their apartment complex. He didn't seem much better, but he was standing a little bit straighter. Jester got the key from the potted plant and let Caleb into Nott's place. Caleb just stood at the door until Jester led him in.
Nott was in the kitchen cooking and froze when she saw Caleb. "What happened?"
"Fjord says that Professor Ikithon literally threw Frumpkin out of the class room out of the class," Jester said.
"Caleb, is that true?" Nott asked.
Caleb nodded the slightest amount. "He's a weakness."
"No, he's not," Nott said. "You saved Frumpkin. This is how he pays you back, remember?"
Caleb didn't say anything and just stared at nothing shaking.
Nott swore loudly. "That bastard! That f@#&er! I'm going to kill him!"
"Who are you murdering this time?" Yeza asked walking in.
"Professor Ikithon. He won't let Caleb have Frumpkin," Jester said.
Yeza's face darkened. "Oh. I'll talk to him. He probably hasn't heard about Caleb. I'll go clear this all up."
Nott scowled. "It's not going to work. He's the same kind of bastard as Professor Derogna."
"He'll have to listen to reason," Yeza said. "But if that doesn’t work, maybe we can get Dr. Trickfoot to write a note for Caleb explaining the situation."
Nott looked like she didn't believe him, but she agreed anyways.
"Is there anything I can do?" Jester asked.
Nott smiled softly at her. "I think Caleb and Frumpkin could use a distraction. Could you watch a movie with them?"
"Sure!' Jester said, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she should be doing more.
****************
Watching a movie with Caleb was usually a lot of fun. He had trouble focusing on the screen so they usually ended up just talking to each other about what was going on on the screen or in their lives. But that wasn't the case this time. Caleb was as motionless as a statue and never said a word. By the end of the film, he seemed just as stressed as he was when they started. Once the movie ended, he silently retreated to his room.
Yeza had returned from campus looking dejected just as Jester was about to leave. “I spoke with Professor Ikithon. Tried explaining the situation, but I guess I didn’t make it clear. He woudn’t budge on the no cats rule.”
“More like he doesn’t care,” Nott said. “I’m getting some cans.”
“Honey,” Yeza said softly but firmly.
Jester bit her lip. “You mentioned getting a note from his therapist. That should work right?”
“He’s not that unreasonable, so it should. Caleb has an appointment with Dr. Trickfoot tomorrow, right?” Yeza asked.
“Right,” Nott said, “but in case that doesn’t work, I’m collecting cans.”
**********************
The next evening Jester got a text from Caleb. -Thank you for yesterday. I’m sorry that was such bad company.-
-its okay you were having a sick day. You feelin better today?- Jester texted back.
-Not really.-
Jester frowned at her phone. -is there anything i can do for you? Would hanging out make you feel bettere?-
-No, I’d just make for terrible company today. But, can I ask a favor of you?-
Jester nodded forgetting for a moment that Caleb couldn’t see her. -sure!!-
-Can you watch Frumpkin during my classes with Professor Ikithon?-
-but you got a doctor’s note? That should let frumpkin stay with you- A sinking sensation filled the pit of Jester’s stomach despite her optimistic text to Caleb.
-If he rejects it though, will you watch Frumpkin for me? You’re the one I trust Frumpkin with the most.-
Jester gasped and nearly dropped her phone. Caleb trusted her that much? Frumpkin was the most important thing in the world for Caleb. No one had really thought of Jester as being responsible or capable before. Part of her wanted to have the chance to prove that he was right in trusting her, but not at the cost of Caleb being separated from Frumpkin. -i’ll watch frumpkin for you but only if you really need me to-
-Thank you.-
************************
Dread filled Jester the next day. Time would only tell if Caleb would be allowed to keep Frumpkin. Jester had a class that started at the same time as Caleb’s with Professor Ikithon, but it ended a half an hour before Caleb’s did. It was with the Traveler, so she should’ve been super focused and excited, but she spent the whole class distracted and watching the clock. She had asked if she could bring a cat to class. The Traveler just chuckled and seemed pleased with the idea while giving her permission.
Once class was over, Jester ran all the way to Professor Ikithon’s classroom. She was out of breath and nearly cried when she saw Frumpkin pawing at the door. Jester picked him up and hugged him. Frumpkin squirmed and cried in her arms. “I know Frumpkin, I’m not Caleb, but I’m his friend and that means I’m your friend too.” But Frumpkin kept squirming the whole time they waited for Caleb.
Caleb nearly collapsed to his knees when Jester gave him Frumpkin. He buried his face into Frumpkin’s side and mumbled the softest ‘thank you’ to Jester.
“What happened?” Jester asked.
“He gave Professor Ikithon his doctor’s note, and Ikithon tore it up in front of the entire class,” Fjord said. “I took notes for Caleb, though. I’ll send you a copy of them later,” Fjord said to Caleb, but he wasn’t listening. All of Caleb’s attention was focused on Frumpkin.
An anger swelled in Jester. One that she never knew she was capable of. There was one thing that she was certain of though; Professor Ikithon was going to pay for this.

Notes:
I feel like I can share the name of this AU now. It's the 'Ruining a Man's Career Over a Cat' AU. Though honestly the M9 would totally ruin lives for Frumpkin's sake.
I hope you all enjoyed this chapter and hate Ikithon as much as I do for what he did in this one.

PART EIGHT Past, Present, Future (8 of 10)
MASTERLIST
Book: The Royal Romance (After Book Three) Pairing: Bastien Lykel x OFC Rinda Parks
Word Count: 1,760
Rating: M for Language
Author’s Note: Obligatory disclaimer that Pixelberry Studios owns the TRR characters and my pocketbook with those darn diamond scenes. OFC with all of her quirks is all mine. My apologies if Tumblr or I do something stupid when I try to post this. The keep reading link shows up on my laptop but not my phone. Ugh. Series Nine: The Transition
Series summary: This takes place in the beginning of October when the transition to Drake Walker as the security officer is now complete. It’s Bastien’s last day at Valtoria Primary School and the community gets together to say thank you and goodbye to Bastien. This series focuses on Rinda’s place in her community and her feelings about the future. It also focuses on the transition she’s making from widow, teacher, and mother to someone who wants something more with Bastien.
Chapter summary: The party ends, Henry discusses options if they stay in Cordonia or move back home, and Bastien continues to help Rinda with everyday life.
PART EIGHT Past, Present, Future (8 of 10)
It was one of those nights that you never want to end. Rinda, Laura, Alicia, and Julian went in to heat up the leftovers from dinner and make more of the Magic Oasis drink, and they brought everything outside for people to snack on, or as Rinda said, to help sop up the alcohol so they could keep drinking. The team shared memories about training: That idiot Kakos. Cronuts and coffee. Going through the secret passageways during the first ALICE drill and being covered with cobwebs. Rinda admitted that the entire time they in the passageways she was more afraid that she would see a mouse than their group getting caught while escaping the building. She was fine with the spiders, but mice terrified her. They laughed about Alicia throwing up on Rinda. The weekly dance jams. The football game between Laura and Drake to get him move involved at school—and how he “let Laura win.” How much they accomplished in such a short time. Julian could see Rinda was starting to tear up, so he suggested that they dance. He got out his phone to play music, and he and Theo started dancing, and Mr. Ariti let Rinda talk him into one dance before he went in for the night. But before he started dancing he grinned at Alicia. “I’ll leave the door open tonight, in case you wanted to sneak out of Rinda’s house to see Santos.” Everyone started laughing when Santos walked over to Mr. Ariti to shake his hand as Alicia lowered her face into her hands with embarrassment. Rinda and Mr. Ariti were dancing, but after awhile he motioned for Bastien to come over and take his place. He clapped his hand on Bastien’s shoulder and said goodnight to everyone, but Rinda was already in Bastien’s arms. He took her right hand and held it over his heart, and as he felt her relax into him as he rested his chin on her head. Even though he was so much taller than her, they were a perfect fit when they danced. . . . . . The next morning there was a line of children coming out of Rinda’s house. They were the neighborhood children and the school friends who were able to spend the night, and they were lined up for breakfast. Mr. Ariti insisted that the men wait in his house until more of the children were there so it would be obvious that the men didn’t spend the night in Rinda’s house with the ladies. Julian and Theo were married, but Alicia and Santos were “only” dating, and Drake and Bastien were single. He didn’t want the children to start rumors that involved Rinda, Laura, and Alicia. The ladies were in Rinda’s house helping children create omelettes in a resealable bag. Alicia helped the children with the eggs, Alex helped them add the ingredients, Henry was sealing the BPA-free boiling bags, Phillip was helping put names on the bags, Rinda boiled the bags, and Laura helped the younger children put the hot bags on a plate and open them. Then Cosima and Maddie were outside to help deliver drinks and fruit to everyone. The girls took their job very seriously. Drake didn’t want any fruit, but Maddie calmly informed him that unless he had vegetables in his omelette, Mrs. Parks insisted that everybody eat at least three small pieces of fruit or drink a glass of orange juice. Bastien was laughing at Drake, until Cosima brought him a banana. Mrs. Parks insisted that bananas were his favorite fruit. . . . . . Drake, Julian, Theo, and Bastien helped with clean up and finally parents came to pick up their children, and the members of the security team also left. Everyone was gone except Bastien. He saw how exhausted Rinda was, and he offered to stay longer so she could take a nap. Rinda was too tired to protest, even when Bastien was a goof and insisted that he and Henry tuck Rinda in bed. Henry crawled into the bed next to her, and Rinda patted a spot on the mattress next to her to let Bastien know it was okay if he got on the bed too. “Mom, if we stay in Cordonia would Ollie stay in Wisconsin?” Ollie was their dog, a lovable Australian Shepherd mix. Cassie and her family were taking care of Ollie while they were in Cordonia since Rinda didn’t want to subject an animal to an eleven-hour flight if they were coming home in December. But staying until June was a long time to be without their Ollie-Bollie. “Well, Ollie would have to be quarantined for a few days when he comes to Cordonia, but that’s not a big deal. I talked to the exchange people to see if we can have a dog here, and they’re waiting to hear back from the person who owns this house. I should know that next week. My biggest worry is the plane trip. I don’t want him stowed with the luggage, and eleven hours is a long time for him to not go to the bathroom. “Can we pretend he’s our companion animal? Maybe put him in a peacock outfit?” Rinda snickered. It drove her crazy when people abused the definition of companion and service animals. It ruined it for the people who truly needed their pets in public areas. “I promise that I’m still working with the airline and Cassie’s parents to figure it out. Remember, if we stay in Cordonia we still go home for Christmas. So maybe—I’m not promising. Maybe we fly back with Ollie and do a couple long layovers where we can take him outside to stretch. Like I said, I don’t know for sure so I can’t promise.” Bastien was silently watching, observing Rinda’s honesty even though it was disappointing Henry. “Rinda, Henry. I know the details about this house and the owner, but that person wants to remain anonymous. But I know that person won’t have a problem if you have Ollie in the house. And as far as bringing Ollie here, I know King Liam and Queen Riley would be fine if we used the royal jet. They want to fly Cassie and her family here so they can meet her, and we can bring Ollie when she visits. I can take care of all of that for you. The quarantine regulations, too.” Rinda was looking at Bastien with disbelief. That would make her life so much easier if they stayed in Cordonia. She couldn’t even begin to thank him. And Henry’s eyes were shining. “Are you serious? Ollie would fly in the royal jet? And Cassie would visit?” Bastien nodded solemnly, and Henry turned back to his mom. “But what do you want to do, mom?” Rinda shook her head. “I promised that it would be your choice. I will be happy with whatever you decide.” “But would you still work at the school?” “If we go back home, yes. I’d work at our school again until the end of the year. If we stayed here, I wouldn’t be at this school as much, but I’d still be there a few hours a week as a parent volunteer and to touch base with Aunt Laura and Uncle Drake. Ms. Melius is coming back in January, so she’d take my place in Ms. Halkais’ classroom. But there is still a lot I would do with the security reforms. I’d visit other schools, so I might have to spend the night somewhere else once in awhile. But that wouldn’t be very often, and you’d stay with Phillip’s parents or Mr. Ariti. I want to work with people from the Cordonian University about starting workshops for student teachers to attend before graduating, and I’d also help with some things in the archives. It’s kind of a hot mess there, and I promised the archivist I would help if I stayed the whole year.” “Mom, do you miss teaching college students?” She booped his nose. “I love you Bug, but please stop asking me questions to figure out what I want to do. I’m going to be fine either way.” “If you work at the archives does that mean we can keep seeing Mr. Lykel once in awhile?” Rinda hesitated, not sure of what to say, but Bastien quickly stepped in. “Yes, you would.” He turned to Rinda. “Henry and I were talking about this Thursday night. If it is alright with you, I can still visit during the week. Then weekends, only if it is okay with you, you could stay at the palace whenever you’d like. There are going to be times I will have to adjust plans or even cancel, but I want to make this work. If you both do, too.” Rinda was overwhelmed and exhausted, and desperately hoping Henry would want to stay in Cordonia, but she wouldn’t do anything to sway him either way. Bastien lowered his voice so only Rinda could hear him. “Tria. Show me your eyes.” He knew her emotions by the color of her eyes. Even though she was tired, they were green. Excited, full of hope, and that’s all he needed to know. “Let’s tuck your mom in so she can sleep. She’s done a lot the past few days and must be exhausted. Tria, thank you for everything you did to make this party a success. I had such a good time and thank you for everything you did to make it so special for me.” He tucked her in, kissed her crazy curls, and booped her nose, which made Henry start laughing. He booped her nose too. “Mr. Lykel, if mom sleeps too long should we wake her up with the sun song?” It was a German song Rinda would sometimes sing to wake up Henry. She sang it to Bastien once, too. And when Henry didn’t wake up right away, she would also pull off his covers and tickle him. He hated it. Bastien laughed at Henry. “Yes. Absolutely. We will sing the sun song, pull off the covers, and tickle her.” “And boop her nose?” “Obviously.” Henry gave Bastien a high five as Rinda groaned and pulled the covers over her head. She was fast asleep a few minutes later. While she slept, Bastien played with Henry and the neighborhood kids, talked to Mr. Ariti while cleaning up his kitchen, caught up on some of his work, and scrubbed Phillip’s spaghetti stains off Rinda’s kitchen ceiling.

Secret Santa Ch 6
Sorry about the wait! I went home for Thanksgiving and we just got the Internet back!
So yeah tons of cuteness in the last chapter. Headcanon that Bradley is totally a cat lover! Also Pepper’s original name was Ashley but then I thought Bradley already had a name that ends with -ley and it looked too similar. Besides, salt and pepper go together!
Ch 6- Bradley
“You’re picky, aren’t you?” Bradley asked. Pepper mewed and turned her nose up at the white cat bed Bradley pointed out. “Do you want a darker color?”
Pepper batted at the air in front of her.
“This one’s too big,” Bradley said, kneeling to look at the items on the bottom row. “And this one’s expensive.”
He set Pepper down so he could look at the price tag of a brown, circular bed. The fleece was soft and fluffy, and had room to spare as Pepper grew up.
“What about this one?” he asked, his heart sinking when he realized Pepper hadn’t answered like she normally did. “Pepper?”
It hadn’t been a week and he’d already lost track of his kitten. She couldn’t possibly get into trouble. No, there was no way she could waltz out the door and get chased by stray dogs or hit by a car or be buried in a landslide-
Bradley inhaled deeply, though it didn’t help calm his heart at all. He walked through the aisle twice, but there was no sign of a dark gray kitten anywhere.
“Bradley!” An all-too familiar voice shouted. “Hey! What are you doing here?”
The last thing he needed with this disaster of epic proportions was the epitome of catastrophe himself.
“Milo,” Bradley said flatly. “Go away. Weekends are my breaks.”
“Well, I can’t leave Diogee behind!” Milo cheerfully waved to Diogee, who was behind a large enclosure with a group of five other dogs. Diogee barked at the acknowledgement. “Also, Melissa’s the assistant teacher!”
“Assistant teacher for what?” Bradley asked.
“Oh, you didn’t know?” Milo asked. “Diogee teaches ACL. American Canine Language for short. This pet store lets them use the space on Saturdays at noon. It’s really nice of them to do that.”
Melissa put a fluffy Pomeranian down, opening the door a crack so she could join the conversation but not let the dogs out. “Between you and me, I have no idea what they’re saying. I’m just here to pet some pooches,” she whispered to Bradley.
Bradley pulled away, quickly turning his back on Milo so he didn’t see his cheeks heat up. Of course he’d been thinking about Melissa’s gift, but he only thought about it during school since Pepper wasn’t distracting him. Not that all distractions were bad of course. “If you’ll excuse me, I have to go find Pepper.”
“Did you lose her?” Milo asked. “I can help you look. It’s no trouble. Maybe I can get Diogee to sniff her out for you.”
“Yes, I lost her,” Bradley snapped. “And keep your mutt away.”
No amount of telling Milo to keep out of his business was working, so Bradley had no choice but to let Milo follow behind him. In that timespan, three shopping carts overturned and a large bag of dog food split open, the entire back half of the store now filled with the sounds of crunching kibble and barking dogs.
They checked the bird aisle, the toy section, the aquarium decorations, and the grooming services, but they still couldn’t spot Pepper anywhere.
“It’s hopeless,” Bradley muttered. “We’ll never find her.”
“Don’t give up!” Milo said. “I’m sure she’s fine.”
Bradley scoffed, folding his arms. “And how do you know?”
“Because she’s right next to your head,” Milo replied. “Hi, Pepper! You had us all worried!”
Bradley whipped around, but before he could scoop Pepper up, she turned tail and settled into a black cat bed, curling in on herself and yawning.
“I can’t believe she was napping the entire time,” Bradley said, taking the cat bed off the shelf. “I’m not hanging around longer than I need to. I only came in here to buy her bed.”
Milo nodded. “See you on Monday then! Bye, Pepper!”
“Keep your voice down! She’s asleep!”
Pepper adjusted to his house quickly, so he was able to focus his attention on his gift to Melissa.
She was intelligent, but often forgetful. Bradley had seen her weak throwing arm, so sports equipment was ruled out.
Safety equipment? She was almost always in the splatter zone.
But Melissa never hesitated in telling people off when she thought they were being too paranoid around Milo. In Bradley’s opinion, there was little paranoia in fearing for his life when ‘anything that can go wrong’ did not exclude dying.
He liked to think he had good self-preservation instincts, a skill which many kids at Jefferson County Middle School sorely lacked.
Maybe a second opinion wouldn’t hurt. Girls were complicated after all.
Bradley deliberately hung back while the other kids crossed the street to get to the bus stop. Since there were currently only four functioning buses due to circus elephants stampeding through the parking lot at the main district office, the buses wouldn’t come around for another fifteen minutes.
That was plenty of time to chat.
“Elliot, I have a question for you,” Bradley said.
Elliot was still shaking his fist at Milo. “And if I even see you trying to cover your arm with any bracelet that’s on my prohibited list, you’ll be sorry!”
Bradley rolled his eyes. “Do I want to know why you have a prohibited list for bracelets?”
“Not just for bracelets. Also includes any other pieces of jewelry that can potentially get caught on water heaters, streetlamps, or luggage carts,” Elliot replied. “Always good to help educate a student on safety protocol.”
“No, that was a question formulated out of disbelief,” Bradley sighed. “Say, hypothetically, there was a pretty girl at school and a Secret Santa exchange is coming up in less than a month. What would you get her?”
“Oh, that’s easy,” Elliot said. “Matching safety vests! That way you can walk home at night and the color is bright enough so people can see you! Except make sure the girl in question isn’t also a regionally acclaimed skateboarder. Wendy didn’t like it that much when I gave tickets to all the other skateboarders at the state competition for violating basic safety principles. It totally wasn’t my fault. They deserved those citations for not completely wearing a protective bubble wrap layer while skateboarding along the half-pipe like any sane person would.”
Bradley wouldn’t be caught dead in one of Elliot’s overly saturated safety vests.
He walked to the bus stop with nine minutes to spare. “Thanks for nothing. I have no idea what I was thinking asking him for help,” he muttered.
“Why don’t you ask Milo?” Mort suggested. “He hangs out with Melissa all the time. He’ll probably know a lot of things that she likes.”
Bradley tapped his pencil in irritation and tried to focus on the assignment in front of him. “I am not asking the Boy Blunder for help. I’m not that desperate.”
Mort raised an eyebrow. “You say you aren’t desperate. But your aura is a deep purple like you’re afraid of what will happen in the near future should you fail to procure a suitable present.”
“Don’t try to read my thoughts,” Bradley snapped. “You wouldn’t understand.”
“And there’s a hint of green mixed in there too. Usually it stands for disgust,” Mort said.
Bradley shrugged. “In my defense, they were serving meatloaf for lunch.”
He was not going to regret this. He was not going to watch what little dreams he had crash and burn before they even got off the ground.
“I need help,” he said.
He fought the urge to scream, run, and live like a hermit for the rest of his life. Getting Melissa a present took precedence over his disdain for Milo. It was a constant internal struggle.
Milo gasped, a sickeningly bright smile taking over his face. “Sure! I’d love to help! I don’t know what you might need it for, but consider it accepted anyway!”
As he stood up in excitement, the open water bottle on his desk tipped over, spilling liquid all over the nearby electrical cords. The cords sparked and they quickly moved away from the small fire that sprung up.
He was definitely starting to regret this decision.
Looking around to make sure Melissa wasn’t in the vicinity, Bradley beckoned Milo closer, though he made sure there was an arm’s length between them. “What does Melissa like?”
“Lots of things!” Milo exclaimed. Apparently he never learned volume control, Bradley thought. “Good grades, friends, Diogee, music, risk-taking, bets, and puppies. I’m guessing puppies are kinda out of your budget though.”
As much as he wanted to disregard Milo, he had good ideas sometimes.
Only sometimes.
“Maybe not every kind of puppy,” Bradley said. “Does she like stuffed animals?”
Milo nodded. “She doesn’t really buy them herself. They’re usually gifts. And you can tell which ones were from me, because there’s always a leg or eye lost between the time I buy them and when she receives them. One time I knocked over the shelf where she displays them and now she has caution tape around the perimeter.”
“That’s all I need to know,” Bradley said. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have somewhere else to be.”
“Where?” Milo asked.
A perfume cloud suddenly enveloped the classroom from a girl’s spilled bottle, causing the people in the back to cough as their senses were overwhelmed.
“Anywhere that doesn’t have an ocean mist scented perfume cloud,” Bradley replied, gathering his things and leaving the class so he didn’t get stuck with the scent all over his clothes. “And don’t think for one minute that asking for your help is going to be a regular occurrence.”
He found himself in the stuffed animal section of a toy store, looking through all the plush dogs on the shelves. They had just about every breed of canine imaginable, and Bradley belatedly realized he didn’t ask Milo about the breeds Melissa liked.
He tried to picture Diogee in his mind, though he had no idea what kind of dog he was. He appeared to be a corgi or dachshund though. It was probably the stubby legs.
After some debate, he picked a small Shiba Inu plushie complete with Santa hat. It wasn’t anything extravagant, but he hoped Melissa would find it cute anyway.
He was sure the plushie could never be as adorable as Pepper though.

Group Project: Part 7
Running Title: Group Project. Part 7 (End) Part 6: Here Sequel to Shelter Summary: A family can’t be a team, because with teams, there’s always a winner or a loser. With family, there are no losers. That’s what Timothy Walker believes anyway.
Lala’s song is “Not Alone” by Otto Knows.
Link looked from their pets, to the exotic plant, to his children enjoying lunch at the counter. Timcampy was a wheezing delight at his human doppelgänger’s feet, as they boy kept sneaking the dog bits of food. Which, thought the father, the son did not need to sneak at all, seeing as Allen had been spoiling the canine rotten with human food since the day Cross dropped into Allen young arms.
Lala was absentmindedly petting Atuuda between her lunch and reading a book. The cat purred, contented at yet another human to shower her with attention.
Rosemary the Man Eating Plant, which really was just a title given to her by Toukusa all those years ago (and it stuck), well. Link just fed her a rat, so he assumed the unconventional houseplant was happy.
“Allen.”
“Hmm?” Allen shoved another sandwich into his mouth, looking at his husband.
“We have five.”
---
Lala and Timothy watched their Dad almost choke on his food, laughing up a storm. Their Papa looked downright smug.
“Adults are weird.” Said Tim.
Lala nodded. “I concur.”
---
When Timothy was seven and a half, he was abandoned on the doorstep of Hearst’s Orphanage in the middle of a cold December night, by a father who never loved him.
He was as bitter as the wind at the time.
Fast forward two years later, and Timothy gained two fathers at the same time, who will never stop loving him.
Or his sister. Or each other.
He may be young, but Timothy was observant. He saw a lot of love in his family, even he was too unwilling to outright admit it at times.
But what makes a family?
---
Cross walked into his office, late as usual, coffee in hand, only to almost spit it all over himself.
Set smack dab in the middle of the room was a brightly colored, obnoxious standee of his brat.
“What the fucking fuck?” The police officer choked.
A tell-tale jingle appeared down besides him, and the redhead looked down to see his grandson, shaking his swear jar expectedly.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Why the he-eck are you here?!” It hurt to correct himself, but damn if Cross didn’t want to lose anymore money, and stuffed the damn jar with a dollar (just in case).
Placated, the boy answered, “Dad dropped me off, saying we needed to bond.”
Marian Cross could practically hear his brat’s cackle from wherever the hell he was.
---
“Let’s go bother the nerds in Forensics.”
“Will I get to see a dead body?” “Probably. Don’t tell your parents.”
---
Once, just once, a cameraman tried to bother their way into getting a surprise picture and scoop of Allen and Lala.
The father and daughter just left Anita’s cafe, and the instant Allen saw the flash, he was on the nosey man in a second.
“Hello! I understand that you are only trying to do  your job, but could you please not do that?” Greeted the singer, all smiles and blatant charm. The would be photographer was dazed, then aghast to discover that Allen had use his left hand to crunch the camera into a pieces.
“What the hell beansprout?” Kanda groused from the cafe door, looking as menacing and as Kanda as ever. Lala had retreated back into the shop to grab her father’s friend, just incase. Said girl was hiding behind the long haired man, peeking behind his arm and glare at the interloper.
The cameraman began to sputter while Allen whipped his head around to give his friend a scathing look. “It’s ALLEN.”
“Che.” Kanda turned his steel gaze at the stranger, which if the cameraman knew Kanda, they would know that this was Kanda’s usual expression. “Go away.”
Not needing to be told twice, the stranger scampered away, crushed camera and all.
This kind of incident never happened again.
---
Since leaving France with his new family, Timothy had kept in contact with the Head Mother who cared for him during his stay at the orphan home.
They both emailed back and forth, sharing stories and the nonsense that often happens from having a diverse family or running a home for children.
“Dear Mother Hearst,” he would always begin, because if there was one thing she had taught him, it was manners.
“I have learned something really important, and I want to tell you about it.”
---
“Afternoon Colonel.” Greeted Weever, eyes weary.
Cross huffed around his unlit cigarette. “Don’t give me that look, I’m just here to see the new evidence.”
“Right.” the assistant forensics chief sighed and headed toward the evidence table, about to explain what had been and had not been concluded.
Except Assistant Gill decided to scream and pass out on the ground. Komui, being the good boss that he was, had kicked the rolling surgical table out of the way, less Gill would have had a very nasty fall.
On the body table, half covered by a film sheet, was a grinning ten year old, who was very much alive.
Cross pointed and laughed like the hooligan he was.
“Why is there a child in the surgery lab?!” Yelled Weever. “Cross!” He pointed accusingly.
The man in question was leaning on a deck, wheezing like his kid’s damned dog. “Just-” he gasped, and more laughter. “Let me have this moment.”
After the terror of the forensics lab left, ten year old hefted like a grinning sack of flour, Komui looked at his chief assistant. “That was funny.”
“No it was NOT!”
---
“Daddy.” Lala tugged her father’s white hair to get his attention. Looking upside down at his daughter from the grand piano, Allen grinned. “What’s up?”
He noticed right away she was red in the face, and pinching her fingers together. Usually, this meant that Lala had become very shy, despite being a very blunt young lady.
“There’s a song.” She mumbled, then looked cross at herself for it and tried again louder. “There’s a song I want to write. But I don’t know,” she tapered off, almost quite. “How.”
Allen jumped up from the piano bench and engulfed his daughter in a hug, almost lifting her off feet off the ground. Almost, because as she was just mere centimeters away from his height.
She squeaked, caught off guard. “Daddy!”
“Let’s go see Miranda.” Allen said, elated and fond all at once. He knew exactly what to do.
---
He had once asked Mother Hearst what a family was, nose scrunched and mouth petulant. He was far from the only child at the Home, and all of them continuously went about wanting a family.
Timothy had no idea what that was. So he never asked for it.
“Family holds different meaning for everyone.” Hearst had answered, smoothing his wild hair back. “You will simply just have to find out what yours is.” She tweaked his nose and he blew a raspberry at her in annoyance.
Now, though, Timothy thinks he knows.
“You see, lots of people keep saying a family is a team, like in books and movies and stuff. But that can’t be right because teams usually mean there’s a competition and there’s gonna be a loser.
But, like, with a family there aren’t any losers. There shouldn’t be anyway.”
---
Alma sprawled over their couch, flipping through what they thought were old photo albums overhead. Upon further inspection, they realized it was one of Kanda’s scrapbooks. “Yuu, did you know your books are mixed with the albums?”
“What?” Kanda poked his head from the hall, tying his hair in a topknot. His eyes widened at what exactly Alma was looking through. “No shit, put that away!”
Face turning impish, Alma began flipping through the pages with more intent. “Why, what are you hiding?” “Nothing! Put it down!”
Kanda stomped over, but was too late for a red piece of paper to slip through the pages and land onto Alma’s face. Their husband snached it away and hid it behind his back. Alma blinked. “Was that-”
“No.”
“Yuu.”
Grumbling and pink nosed, Kanda showed them.
A bit stunned, Alma gaped. It was the valentine heart from second grade! “Yuu, we both go zeroes on that!”
“Yeah.”
“It was a group project!”
“Yeah.”
“You said it got thrown away!”
“Yeah.”
It was well preserved, if not a little gaudy with all the decorations and glued on glitter. It had looked like a masterpiece in second grade, regardless.
“Why?” Alma asked, confused. They were also a mix of amusement and exasperation.
Kanda mumbled and glared at the wall.
“Yuu, I can’t hear you.”
“BECAUSE,” he shouted, then realized his tone and tried again. “It was your heart.”
---
Alma thoroughly kissed Kanda stupid into bed faster than a blink that evening.
They were so very lucky to have this marshmallow of a husband.
---
With the start of his children entering school, Link took it upon himself to join the PTA. It was the duty of a parent to help out at their child’s school, and to stay up-to-date on the events there.
For some reason, all of the mothers there kept giving him food to bring home.
“They think you’re a hot single dad.” Allen teased over the phone. He was away at yet another interview. “Trying to win your heart with their cooking.”
Link gave the tupperware of green bean casserole a frown. Suddenly, the food was menacing. He’ll just feed it to Rosemary.
“Lala’s recital is coming up.” Link decided to change the subject.
“Yeah! How is she? Is she excited? Nervous? I’m coming home in another two days!” Allen rambled and exclaimed. “Hey is she there?”
Wordlessly, Link handed off the phone to their daughter. “Yes.” she answered for herself.
“Lala!”
Timothy leached himself at his Papa’s side. “Me next, me next!”
---
Looking around the bare walls of his new classroom, newly graduated Exceptional Student Services teacher Kanda Yuu frowned. Well. More than usual.
He didn’t know the first thing about setting up a classroom.
Okay, so he had an idea. But where to start?
Alma busied themselves with unpacking his boxes of supplies. “Don’t worry. I called for backup.”
“Backup?” Kanda narrowed his eyes. “What backup?”
Suddenly Alma had yards of fabric in their hands and Kanda felt nervous.
The door burst open and in walked Chaoji, two drink carriers in hand. “Hello, I’m. Well.” He laughed nervously. “Alma said you’d need help.”
“Oy, oy little brother, this desk is shit. I’m gonna fix it.” Next thing Kanda knew, Diasya was there with a tool box. “Daisya what the fuck.”
Link walked in with a stack of baked goods and a blue haired child. Behind was the beansprout and Lenalee.
Kanda pointed at Allen. “No. Not this one.”
“Up yours Kanda.”
“I’ll shove this pencil sharpener so far up your-”
Somehow, the room got set up and decorated to fit the needs to middle school students. But not before Allen and Kanda got into a paint fight.
---
“In school, we have to sometimes do group projects. I think family is like that.”
---
Sometime during the school year, Link was unable to pick them up and Allen was away at a recording, and the city had an emergency that kept Cross unavailable.
Long story short, despite having a myriad of other people who could have come to pick them up that day, it was a strange man in a limousine, who was somehow on their school contact list (even though both children had never heard of him before) and allowed to sign them out from school.
“Call me great grandpa.” He giddied.
To which both children gave a blunt, “No.”
Lala ushered Timothy to the crosswalk while the weird man sobbed on the ground. They could just walk to the bakery.
After handing out the last of large order, Link was surprised to see his kids walk into the shop. He blinked, then frowned. “Your...Allen had called for Neah to get you. Where is he?”
Lala squinted. “Who?” “What’s a Neah?” Asked Tim, also squinting. Was it the weird crying man?
The door rammed open, a different man than the one who had come for them huffing with an enraged look on his face. “I’M NEAH.”
All three Walkers stared at the man as he roared in the entrance. “That old man fucking shoved me in the CLOSET AND TOOK OFF!”
---
Lala and Timothy gained a Neah that day, and somehow a great grandfather that they never knew about.
Though, being family meant that little Timothy could exploit the menacing looking man.
“Quarter.”
---
After a long shift at work, Anita laid on Cross’ couch and set her feet in his lap, exhausted. On autopilot, the man began to knead and rub her feet.
She groaned and threw her arm over her eyes. “I love you.”
“I know.” The Colonel said, smug.
Just for that, Anita shoved her foot against his face.
---
“Everyone gets a job in the group, and we all have to work together to make something. And it can’t be a group unless there’s at least two people.
Sometimes there’s like, five or more though.
Family is like that. It’s made by people who work together.
It’s a group project!”
---
The night of Lala’s recital, many PTA mothers were heartbroken to find that handsome Mister Walker was not a single father.
Their husband was just as handsome in his own right, even with the shocking white hair.
Timothy thought his Dad looked weird with the fake glasses, but whatever. He understood that Allen needed to disguise himself, otherwise people would disturb the show, wanting an autograph or sneak a picture.
Of course, Lala sang beautifully.
---
It’s a long, long way to a miracle, Just to let you know,
You’re not alone.
---
Allen smiled at his son, who was attempting mouth the words to Lala’s song. He looked up at his husband who looked just as proud has he felt.
The music around them bowed and flowed in the air, and if he could see it, Allen knew it would be gleaming.
Ping, ping, ping went a piano, and Allen found himself no longer admiring the flood of music. There was no piano on stage, just Lala and her voice.
His ears tickled and Allen looked around the room. He knew that sound.
Noticing a familiar silhouette by the theater windows, Allen felt his heart go to his throat.
The memory beamed and waved. And when Allen blinked back the water in his eyes, it was gone.
“Allen?” Link asked. “What is it?”
The singer cleared his throat, “Nothing.” He turned to his husband and curious son, face splitting from the joy in his smile. “I remembered something, that’s all.”
---
It's a long long way to miracle But I promised my soul that I'll make it back home.
---
“That’s what I think a family is.
Also, Mother Hearst, you’re part of it too. Thank you for being the first person in my family.
Love you, and junk. Timothy.”
---
“Mother? What is it?”
The older nun sent the email to the printer, tears running down her warm face. “Don’t worry dear. I just need to wash my face.”
What a lovely beginning.

Making Comfort Dogs an Everyday Part of School
Cameron is no ordinary dog, and not just because he was born on Valentine’s Day. To Maggie, a first-grader at Burgundy Farm Country Day School, the Labrador/terrier mix with chestnut-brown eyes and “really fluffy” black hair who spends most days on campus is more like a friend. When Cameron is near, Maggie feels “really, really, happy,” she said. “I feel safe around him,” she added. “He’ll lay down and ask me to scratch his tummy,” she explained, because Cameron likes Maggie.
Cameron is one of a handful of dogs at Burgundy, a K-8 private day school in Alexandria, Virginia. Dogs started showing up there when the head of school, Jeff Sindler, brought his lumbering lab, Luke, to the main office building where Sindler works. After Luke died, Sindler adopted Cameron and brought him to campus, too, where the dog Maggie describes as “really cute” became a school favorite.
“They don’t care if you’re good at basketball, or a great reader, or popular,” Sindler said. “They just want to be loved—equal opportunity,” he added. Cameron and the other dogs on campus—always on a leash and with their owner—go a long way toward improving students’ social and emotional well-being, he said: They reduce tension and soothe anxiety, and elicit happy feelings from students.

“They bring out some super-basic and important emotions,” he said, and are especially helpful for children and adults who struggle in social interactions. Just as important, dogs on school grounds set a positive, welcoming tone. They help preserve the school climate that Sindler believes Burgundy embodies: one that is accepting, supportive and curious. “Dogs are one way to hold on to that atmosphere,” Sindler said, adding that “schools should be fun and exciting, and dogs can be a big part of that.”
According to research carried out at the Yale Innovative Interactions Lab, there is something distinctive about dogs that makes them so companionable. Unlike cats, parakeets or snakes, dogs have co-evolved with humans for about 30,000 years, prompting them to develop skills that make them adept at understanding social and emotional cues from humans. Dogs make eye contact, for example. They follow where a person points. When frightened, they seek comfort from humans. And according to Yale researcher Molly Crossman, who studies how humans interact with dogs, “there is encouraging, preliminary evidence that dogs might reduce stress.”
Hospitals, nursing homes, courthouses, colleges and universities, and other groups have pounced on such studies and brought in dogs and other animals as a way to reduce stress among their populations. But there’s one large cohort that’s usually excluded from the canine influx: children in public schools. With the exception of service and police dogs, and the occasional visit from a designated “reading” dog, ordinary dogs are largely absent from public schools. Many towns pass ordinances that forbid dogs from even stepping on school property, let alone taking up residence in the guidance department or principal’s office. Some school districts enact no-dogs rules to protect children who are afraid of or allergic to the animals and to keep school property free of dog waste.
But a new program started in New York City that incorporates dogs in ordinary classrooms may be challenging the no-dogs rule. The Comfort Dog Pilot Program, launched in fall 2016 by the Department of Education, pairs select dogs from the North Shore Animal League America with participating New York City schools. Begun as a pilot with seven schools, the program expanded at the start of the 2017 school year to include a total of 42 varied elementary, middle and high schools. Chancellor of City Schools Carmen Fariña gave the go-ahead for the idea when a fifth-grade boy from Queens made the suggestion. In addition to offering ordinary comfort, some of the dogs are deployed in teachers’ lesson plans to encourage empathy, cooperation and decision-making as part of the Mutt-i-grees Curriculum.
“It’s an innovative approach to social-emotional learning,” said Miranda Barbot, a spokeswoman at the NYC education department who is familiar with the program.

Nina is a 9-month-old boxer/beagle mix with a toffee-colored coat and a distinctive underbite. Rescued from a kill shelter in Virginia, she made her way up to New York and now trots off most days to Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn with Dave Robinson, an assistant principal there who adopted her. Robinson and school principal Ari A. Hoogenboom applied to the Comfort Dog Program when they heard how well it had worked in elementary and middle schools around the city. “Our attitude was, if something’s good, let’s do it here,” Hoogenboom said. Abraham Lincoln High School educates some 2,000 kids from various backgrounds and is the only large high school in New York with a comfort dog.
Hoogenboom recognized that some teenagers might not want to interact with Nina, either because of allergies, fear or a cultural inhibition. Before bringing in Nina, he sent all parents a “positive option letter” that they had to sign before their child could interact with her. Having a dog in school requires sensitivity to faculty, too, Hoogenboom said.
Nina gets to work early. In the morning, she holds office hours (with Robinson) so that students can drop in for impromptu social visits. After lunch, she spends two hours in counseling sessions with small groups of kids, where she “does the basic stuff,” Robinson said: wags her tail, looks at students with her doe-like eyes and exudes indiscriminate affection. Hoogenboom and Robinson said she has had a positive effect on both students and teachers. Attendance at counseling sessions has picked up because kids want to see Nina, and her presence in the meetings gets students to talk more openly. She has helped kids in crisis, offering elemental comfort that humans could not provide. And she sets a welcoming tone at school that has proved helpful in lowering tension.
“We’ve had instances with students who were agitated and about to get in a conflict, and she helped bring them down from 10 to 0,” Robinson said.

Sindler has observed similar reactions to his dogs, not only with the children at Burgundy but also among students at a year-round school in Baltimore where he used to work. Children there often came from challenging backgrounds: Many lived in poverty, or had to travel through dangerous neighborhoods to get to school, or shared a too-crowded home. When these emotionally needy children encountered Luke, Sindler’s benevolent Labrador, they relaxed and were more prepared to learn. The dog seemed to fill unmet emotional needs. For children whose primary experiences with dogs had been limited to frightening confrontations involving growling and teeth, the interactions with Luke also softened their perception of animals. For Sindler, including Luke was all part of an effort to create a safe environment where learning could flourish.
Crossman from Yale is careful to point out that public enthusiasm for the efficacy of dogs as support animals far outstrips actual evidence that canines do in fact ease anxiety. Dog-crazy humans are so hopelessly partial to the animals that they might perceive emotional benefits that do not exist. Further research is needed, she said. But many students and teachers swear by them. If by some decree all dogs were forced to leave campus, something special would be lost, said Max, an eighth-grader at Burgundy who is especially happy when the math teacher’s dog lopes around during exams.

The Best of 2017: Top Sites, Apps, & Products of the Year
All My Faves presents the best sites, apps, and products of 2017.
It’s a new year. 2018 should be another year of growth and advancement in the tech space, with numerous developments already underway. It will, of course, be tough to beat all the amazing products that launched or were discovered in 2017.
This list represents the best of 2017’s “Weekly Faves,” our weekly feature of the best 11 sites, apps, games, and products found on the web. Each week, we collect and present 11 products across a series of categories, including health/fitness, entertainment, interactive, and many more. The only requirement is that the site or app needs to truly impress us and provide some benefit to society, even if that benefit is pure entertainment. Below is a collection of the best such sites and apps that we discovered last year. We hope that you can enjoy using these products throughout 2018, and we look forward to providing you with more transformative sites and apps in the year(s) ahead.
Embark
Companies such as 23andMe and Ancestry.com have altered individuals’ understandings of their own heritage and identity. With so many mixed breed dogs up for adoption at the shelter, it only makes sense that the same concept can be applied to our canine companions. Embark is, essentially, 23andMe for dogs. Owners send in a DNA sample of their pup in order to receive detailed feedback on their breed, as well as genetic health issues and traits. If you own a mystery mutt and are curious about its background, Embark is a great way to find out more information about your pooch’s genetic makeup. If you own a purebred, Embark can also be useful for learning more about the breed’s genetic history and overall health. Embark has the potential to transform and elevate our understanding of our pets, and for that reason has earned a spot atop our Best of 2017 list.
Neverthink
Neverthink solves an all-too-common “problem” of the streaming age: what to watch. For those who have spent way too much time browsing YouTube, Netflix, or your streaming platform of choice for something good to watch, Neverthink makes that difficult decision for you. The site does have several different channels to choose from, but all of them contain quality content curated by the Neverthink team. All of the videos are hosted on YouTube, but they play in a continuous stream on Neverthink. It’s not necessarily a bad thing that, as of 2017, we’ve gotten to the place where there’s too much content to choose from. But that’s the reality that we live in, and we should all appreciate that Neverthink can guide us along the right path to finding something to watch.
Finimize
The FinTech space is filled with apps and products that claim to help with your financial life but seem like convoluted ways to rip you off. Finimize is the rare financial advisor that only exists to help. It’s a daily email newsletter that explains financial news in a language that can be understood even by those with a low level of financial literacy. The company also launched FinimizeMyLife, a free financial guidance tool, last year to help users get a better sense of their financial plans and future. The company is geared toward the younger generation, which as of 2017 is starting to reach the age where they need to worry more carefully about financial security. That’s why Finimize is one of our top products of 2017, and it’s worth signing up for their newsletter in 2018 and beyond.
Jam
EdTech has made significant advances in the past several years. Technology is increasingly incorporated in the school environment, and teachers are becoming savvier and savvier at integrating technology into their lesson plans. Still, if kids are anything like I was back in the day, those lesson plans don’t exactly cover the subjects that interest them. Jam offers online courses for kids that should actually inspire them to learn on their own. With titles like “Drawing Bootcamp,” “Build Anything With Lego,” and “Host A Minecraft Video Show,” Jam is bound to be more exciting than the average classroom. It’s 2018 now, and it’s time we start getting kids interested in what they’re really passionate about. Jam is a great start for that.
Your.MD
In 2017, our doctors became robots. Well, not exactly. But we did get a new A.I. health assistant. It’s called Your.MD, and it could significantly alter the way health services are provided in the future. The app is basically like an interactive version of WebMD. You enter your symptoms as well as personalized information about yourself, and the app returns a list of possible illnesses or ailments, as well as some medical advice. Much like WebMD, Your.MD is not a replacement for an actual doctor (yet, at least). But it does provide a helpful way of checking your symptoms, and is smarter and more uniquely tailored to you than a simple search engine.
Crello
In 2018, no one should have to pay for expensive graphic design software ever again. Crello has made graphic design simple and easy to use. If you want to make a poster, banner, social media image, email header, or anything else, Crello is an easy tool to get the job done. Crello comes with built-in templates, design formats, and free photos and vectors to work with. It’s intuitive and helpful for any type of design project. There’s not much else to say, except that Crello is easy to use and incredibly worthwhile. Use it.
Cheddar
Cheddar, like Neverthink, solves the “what to watch online problem.” Rather than having to choose from a set of videos, Cheddar displays a constant stream. Like Finimize, it offers financial news for the internet generation. It also describes itself as “the leading post-cable network,” because it operates almost exactly like a normal TV station, except for the fact that it’s exclusively broadcast online. Unlike most online shows, Cheddar really feels like a news network. It’s like a millennial version of Fox Business or Bloomberg, broadcasting from Wall Street and profiling startups, companies, and everything related to financial news. In 2018, look out for TV to continue to evolve. In the meantime, watch Cheddar and realize how far the medium has already come.
Great Big Story
While Cheddar is the online equivalent of a financial news network, Great Big Story produces cinematic short films and documentaries. The videos on the site are all short, but each of them are informative and interesting. Great Big Story is updated daily with clips such as “The Reason Britain Loves Tea” and “L.A.’s Best Indian Food Is In This Gas Station.” Each of the videos reveals something unique about a specific place within our world. In 2017, the world became increasingly interconnected. With Great Big Story, we can learn more about our worldly neighbors through beautiful cinematic videos.
Earth 2050
Earth 2050 is a project dedicated to Kapersky Lab, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2017. But the site is much more than an ad for the Russian cybersecurity company. It’s a vision of the world in the year 2050, as imagined by a group of futurists and Kapersky Lab experts. Browse Earth 2050 for bold predictions about the future of humanity, like “Fashionable Clothes Hacking” and “Gold-bearing Algae.” Agree or disagree with each prediction, and realize that Earth 2050 will be here sooner than we all think.
The Kings League: Odyssey
The All My Faves flash game of the year is The Kings League: Odyssey, a game developed by Kurechii Studio. It’s long and involved, with complex elements not found in the typical flash game. The premise is that you’re leading a squadron of medieval fighters, and you must train and recruit them as well as fight. The game moves at a slow pace, with “days” passing in between matches so you can train and upgrade your soldiers. If you’ve got time to waste or need a break in 2018, The Kings League: Odyssey is the game for you.
Mini Metro
Have you ever wanted to design a city’s metro system? Mini Metro is the mobile game for you. Did you answer that question with “no, why would I ever want to design a city’s metro system? That doesn’t sound fun at all.”? Then you’re wrong, and Mini Metro is still the game for you. It’s a beautifully-designed mobile app in which the premise is, yes to design a working metro system. It’s almost like a mobile version of Roller Coaster Tycoon, where you have to do some imaginary industrial engineering in order to keep the city moving. If you’ve been to a major city like London, Paris, New York, or Cairo and want to redesign their public transportation system, Mini Metro will be a delight. If you just want to play a cool game in 2018, Mini Metro is definitely worth the download.
