Making centipede & millipede sparklecare patient OCs. Still so hung up on the fact that apparently no insect anthries exist on spinch, but since Doom and Mood exist, other arthropods like arachnids and myriapods do, but we NEVER saw them or even hybrids besides those two. gosh, I wish I had a picture, but I saw this really cute mud dauber wasp(?) today! It was thin waisted and collecting mud so…
But the interesting thing is that it was like, squeaking? Do you know what that could be besides a wasp hard at work?
I have heard it and it's definitely a thing that they do and I've seen it talked about, but I've never seen a good explanation for exactly how they make the noise (a sort of squeaking/buzzing, but not the buzzing of their wings) or why they do it. It's usually while they're busy collecting or depositing mud. Mud daubers are solitary, so I can't imagine it's for communication with other wasps. If anyone can find a trusted scientific source talking about it, I'd love to know the answer!

Dasymutilla vestita, a species of velvet ant, in southern New Mexico, US. Despite their name, velvet ants are actually wasps. The females, like the one in this picture, don't have wings and can inflict an extremely painful sting. However, they're non aggressive and will only sting in self defense. Males have wings and cannot sting.

My 16-month-old son *insists* on flipping through an Indonesian amphibian fieldguide every evening. I think I have peaked as a parent 🥲
#amphibians#frogs#parenting#herpetology#science#the whole book is in Indonesian#so I cannot read it at all except the latin names and measurements#but the photos and layout are amongst the best of any fieldguide I have ever seen#it's basically the ideal book for babies#maximum frog#personal#we have taught him to put out his hand to receive animals to look at#and now when he finds something he holds out his hand and indicates I should put it on there#which is great and all#but he also does this for wasps and bees#and is very upset when he does not get the sharp insects#we are working on it

Every time you drop new lore I get a new idea that I can't figure out how/have the motivation to craft a full story out of lmao
Been thinking about those people asking if Cellie or Luna would notice if somepony lands on them, and I couldn't help but thinking about a pony escaping some sort of abusive situation and flying to the one place they couldn't imagine anypony following them- a goddess.
Would the goddess care? I imagine Luna most definitely would, but Celestia? Maybe, on a sort of vague level, in that she cares about the well being of all creatures. Or maybe she would on a much deeper level than anticipated, seeing as she knows all too well what comes from that sort of thing.
Just wanted to stop by to say thank you for the brain food, I just adore how your universe is coming along! Your worldbuilding is exquisite.
Celestia would not notice you for a while. She may get a vague sense of someone seeking sanctuary, so she would feel protective. If you stay more than a few sunsets she would realize your significance and check you out. She won't ask you about your day or anything, and caring about your story is a little difficult for her. But if your abuser shows up, well... They shouldn't have been so close to a goddess' feet.
The others would care much more, and want to know your whole story and give you comfort. Luna would protect your dreams, Cadance would protect you physically, and Twilight would connect you to a support network to help you get your life back and stay safe.

Fun note of the specific pronoun situation with the translation errors between Wasp and Bugnish: under normal circumstances, Jayde would get automatically assigned he/him in Bugnish, since she uses the standard "non-queen social bug" pronouns that roughly 95% of the Wasp Hive do, which get translated to drone pronouns in Bugnish due to a roughly century-old miscommunication. She gets assigned worker pronouns in Bugnish specifically because those are what Kabbu defaults to with social bugs, and other people picked it up from him during introductions. This Will Be A Point Of Confusion For Her Whenever She Asks About It.

no for real, just go outside and touch some bugs and you’ll be desensitized to them in no time. i took an entomology class in college and therefore had to handle lots of buggos for a few months. i wasn’t phobic or anything but did get mild heebie jeebies from bugs touching me and by the end of the semester i could handle bugs without a problem. just touch some bugs bro, you’ll feel better.
