#excited to see Barbie now

I watched Oppenheimer. I’ve not seen Barbie yet but my argument will still stand I think. It applies to both films, but I can really only use Oppenheimer as an example for the sake of this post.
I loved Oppenheimer. I have my criticisms of it, of course (I firmly believe that you can poke holes in any film and still enjoy it). I thought it was expertly crafted and intellectually stimulating and overall an incredible work.
But the main reason I enjoyed it, and another reason why people are enjoying Barbie so much as well, is because the visuals and filmmaking style is so striking.
Films being based in some kind of hyper realism is more of a modern ideal. What I mean is, Hollywood films that engage in serious topics often try to make the film look and feel as real as possible for audience immersion. The lighting is natural, the shots are in sharp focus, the colors aren’t saturated etc so that the audience will feel like it’s in the room with them. Now this works for a lot of movies, and that’s great!
But I often feel that when directors like Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan lean into the fact that film is *not* reality, when they turn it back into a spectacle and let the camera do the talking, audiences will respond to it, and respond to it very well.
My only examples from Barbie are the color pallete, which is still a good use of film language to convey character ideas and emotions. Even outside of Barbieland, the color pops. You can never miss Barbie, and that’s the point. It serves as a reminder of the world you’re engaging in as well as turning the film into something that’s visually pleasing. And I’m sure there are better examples of this in the movie, too! As again I’ve not yet seen it.
Oppenheimer utilizes abstract imagery and asynchronous editing to demonstrate how Oppenheimer sees the world. The film is in color when we’re in Oppie’s pov, and black and white when it’s more objective. The movie uses sound (and the lack of it) to its advantage. The sound, the visuals, and the effects do an excellent job at conveying mood and atmosphere. You don’t need the movie to tell you that the explosion was huge. You feel it in the sound and blinding light. It’s not a realistic looking film 100% of the time. It leans back into what camera and lighting and sound and other technical aspects of film are good at. It experiments with the image. And it totally works!
I think part of the reason “Barbenheimer” became such a huge thing is because people knew that both films would be a spectacle, and spectacles are a treat. In the early days of film, the whole draw was the fascination with the image. Even when talkies became commonplace the reason you went to the cinema was to watch and marvel at the world that was built in front of you.
I don’t really have a point to this I guess, it just makes my little filmmaker heart happy that hollywood blockbusters are beginning to lean more into the spectacle again and utilize a unique style and film language while simultaneously remaining faithful to their message and themes. These movies (Oppenheimer from my own viewing, Barbie from reviews I’ve seen) are not shallow in the way that many hollywood spectacle films usually are nowadays.
Thank you Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan for giving us a reason to go to the movies again. You smashed it out of the park.
I hope this makes sense. I’m not good at the long posts.

i see a post talking doom and gloom about how we'll never escape toxic masculinity. i think about back in 2017 when american girl released their first boy doll, and a review for him went viral in the collecting community. the review was written by a mom, who said they went into the store to get their daughter a doll, only to see their son's eyes light up like fire when he saw a doll that looked like him, and now every night he puts his doll in pajamas and rocks him to sleep. i think about the toddler in my daycare room a few years back who was obsessed with baby dolls, carrying them everywhere, and his mom proudly told us he uses his sisters' old baby dolls and wants to be just like them. that toddler saw another toddler crying one day and gave her the doll he had to cheer her up. i think about the eight-year-old boy i saw a few years back, excitedly waving around raya's sword in a target checkout line like all his dreams were coming true. there was a video on my instagram the other day of a little boy at disneyworld crying with joy upon meeting his hero, mulan. i think about the voice actor for bow in the she-ra reboot saying his nephews only wanted adora action figures. celebrity men are wearing dresses on tv now. last halloween i saw a little boy dressed as elsa. i went to go see spiderverse over the summer, and in the line ahead of me was a boy who couldn't be older than twelve or thirteen, bouncing and beaming, giddy with excitement over getting to see the female-led romance movie elemental. i think about the five-year-old boy at my library who breathlessly asked me where the pinkalicious books were, eyes widening when i had more on my cart, his mom explaining that he is all about pinkalicious and fancy nancy. i saw so many pictures online of boys and men dressed in pink to see barbie. teenage boys are gonna open their phones and see the man who wrote fucking game of thrones dressed in pink to see barbie. when i was a kid, a boy dressing in pink was practically a social death sentence. there are boys running around in pink on my street right now.

Your tagsss 👀
okay so like i wanna clarify i do not hate the barbie movie, i saw it and i really enjoyed it and all personal opinions about plot points aside there was nothing wrong with it.
that being said,
this movie was not servicing anyone from a "barbie fan" standpoint. it had a lot of cute throwback stuff, and it had a lot of past barbie products. but what i heard from my friends and what i've seen is that no one truly got "nostalgia" from the barbie movie. people recognized toys, and the message those characters were used to convey was amazing. but barbie the brand, as it was, was not the focus.
(side note, i'm not trying to say all media with preexisting ip's are about nostalgia, but people definitely expected to see more specific callbacks to things they considered "iconic barbie")
in fact, as a "not a barbie kid" person, all i could see was revitalization. look at the toys on the shelves in the barbie displays now, they're all the toy sets you saw "throwbacks" to in the movie. look at ken's "kenough" sweater, barbie's adult clothes. on mattel's part, this was rejuvenation. this was, "we see that teens-young adults love a little edge and "surprisingly deep" plots in things they love". so of course they greenlit a movie that jabbed at mattel, because they know people will *appreciate* that and it'll pay off.
they know that if they say they know what's wrong with barbie conceptually, that we'll all go "yeah barbie feminism was a little outdated atp but the movie showed they care!" AND THATS NOT FALSE! but at the end of the day, what i see is a smart business move. that's not a bad thing, but it's what i personally was seeing on screen when i watched it. I was seeing barbie products targeted to adults selling like hot cakes, barbie makeup, barbie mirrors, barbie shirts and costumes.
before this movie, mattel might have had a harder time selling all-ages/adult products with barbie theming. now, those products will SELL.
and again, i'm not trying to trash the movie, i loved it and i can't wait to rewatch it when it's on streaming, and i genuinely believe we will all be talking about greta gerwig and this movie as one of the most important movies of our time thanks to its boldness, popularity, and the current social climate - but i couldn't stop thinking about the fact that truly, barbie as a brand and product wise, was being very carefully tailored to bring back timeless products to the top of toy sales, and to open the door for more widely appealing products with barbie on it - and i found that idea, contrast to the plot and message of the movie going on at the same time, pretty fascinating.
i just found it interesting from the perspective of strategy how carefully tailored the movie was to feature timeless, safe toy sets and create a new slate for a completely new aesthetic that simultaneously cashes in on the popularity of retro aesthetics, y2k aesthetics, and the rise we've seen of embracing childhood or fun media.

Hi!! I watched Oppenheimer on the 20th (together with barbie) and I loved it so much!! So reading your tags and seeing how excited you are about the movie is really sweet ☺ i too would love to rewatch it. and if you ever make gifs of it, i will reblog them for sure 💗
Hallo Anon!! :D Please, I don't know how I'm meant to be a normal person after that movie, I don't think I can exist peacefully as a human being until I go watch it again 😩 it's just going to keep plaguing my mind constantly. The only shame about seeing a movie on release day is that there's no clips online :,)
It was just....so many qualities of a film that I really enjoy: actor I like a lot(Cillian!), beautiful cinematography, dramatic and moving soundtrack, good acting, good writing, etc etc etc!!!! I love movies so much sob sob sob cinema film sob sob sob

Ken's progression OUT of color
This is kinda a cornplate thought that I had nowhere else to put but I love how in the Barbie movie(SPOILERS), Ryan Gosling's Ken's outfits symbolically showcase his "descent" into full patriarchy mode over time.
Tumblr media
At the beginning of the film Ken's beach outfit (his default) has an equal balance of pink and blue. Pink is obviously Barbie's color, and shows Ken as fitting well into the femininity and style of Barbieland, while blue could be argued to be Ken's color (a scene later when he's especially confident features him wearing all denim blue, and the stereotypical gender of these colors, especially when found in kid's toys, supports these basic binaries as associated with these colors).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Ken decides to leave Barbieland with Barbie to delve into the outside world, his color scheme goes full pink, desperate enough to be with Barbie that his attire reflects how dependent his identity is on hers at this stage.
Tumblr media
However, it isn't long before Ken's exploration of the real world leads him to exciting new discoveries about the patriarchy and what it can do for him. Here he is introduced to a newfound sense of self independent from barbie, and while he still carries a pink scarf around his neck, the rest of his outfit has devolved into black and white while hers has remained colorful. As he pursues this new-to-him idea further, his worldview is becoming less unique, pretty, and vibrant(in addition to becoming much more masculine).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is only his scarf that ties him to Barbie now, and upon making the choice not to follow her to Mattel, he becomes fully independent, losing the scarf and any trace of pink in his attire the next time we see him in his mojo dojo casa house coat and beach off outfit underneath.
In his most masculine moment during "Just Ken", he and the other Kens all wear a uniform of the most traditionally male ben shapiro outfit ever: A T-Shirt, belt, and dress pants. All black(and no white either to contrast like the previous 2 outfits). It's fitting that the Kens, in their destructive warpath, imagine themselves as perfectly cleaned up yet violently masculine dancers in their heads, their outfits devoid of all of the flair and character of Barbieland.
Tumblr media
(excuse the shitty picture) After Ken has his little self-growth moment, his new sweatshirt reflects the changed and much more balanced man he has become, much more accepting of himself and a life where he can co-exist with Barbie without being with her. This outfit is again an almost perfect balance of pink and blue, both sides of Ken now a bit more at peace, his colors not pushed out by the LITERALLY black hole of toxic masculinity.
The color scheme also matches the roller blading outfit, so perhaps it shows a somewhat intermediary stage of Ken's development wherein he is still attached to and at peace with Barbieland, but where he is starting to become more independent as well. anyway these are all fun and i genuinely have no fucking idea why Mattel didn't cash in on literally making dolls of all the characters and their outfits these would be so fun to own

A female f1 driver who was featured in the barbie movie as the f1 driver. You could write about her scene and working with the Margot and Ryan lol, and how the grid reacts to it. Lanpd could be her bf or not if you don't want.
You don't have to absolutely write if it doesn't strike any inspiration and you obviously can write whatever you want you xoxo
