Why did I move back to India?
So after 7 years staying in Malaysia. I recently moved back to India, my home country. This was a very difficult decision but here I want to document the things that contributed to this decision. The order is not based on importance but it is random as and when I thought about it.
This was always the plan When I came to Malaysia, in my mind I had decided that I would be in Malaysia for 2-3 years and then come back. I had never been outside Pune. Not for studies, not for job so I was always in my comfort zone in Pune and at my home. Going to Malaysia was a completely new experience and an opportunity for me to grow which I did but that is not something which I want to be permanent. I always wanted to come back, the only thing which was not decided was when? While leaving I had an estimate of 2-3 years but ultimately it became around 7 years.
Parents Being the only son it is kind of my responsibility to take care of my parents. My parents aren't too old. My dad and mom are currently 58 and 57 respectively. They can still manage on their own and they have never told us to leave everything and come back just for them. However, this is something which was always there at the back of my mind. I don't want to continue staying outside and then forcefully come back when it's too late. I want to spend some quality time with them when they are still comparatively healthy.
My priority Recently, I had sat down and had built a list of things that is my priority at this point in my time. The number one thing that came out to be important for me was Freedom. Freedom of choosing where I want to live, freedom of doing the work that I want to do, basically me having more control on my life. After freedom came money and other stuff. Being in any other country gives me the money but takes away my freedom. Yes, there was a point in my life where money was the top priority for me and at that time it did make sense for me to trade anything for money but now time has changed. Now, I am not willing to trade my freedom for anything.
The normal This might be a bit difficult to explain but let me try. When I moved to Malaysia I wanted to come out of my comfort zone to see what is going on in another part of the world. How they lived, how they behave etc and don't get me wrong, I learned a lot. Malaysia has helped me achieve so many things and changed my life for good. However, the normal for people over there is quite different than normal of people in India. For example, - it is normal to not value money and buy a lot of things that we are not going to use - it is normal to do impulsive shopping when you are just strolling around in mall and had no intention to buy anything when you entered the mall - it is normal to do selectively easy things that your religion tells you to do (puja, aarti) but not do the difficult things that the same religion tells you to do (fasting). - It is normal to eat food from outside 2-3 times a week and not exercise. and the list goes on. I am not generalizing this for Malaysians but this was true for the people who were close to us which were mostly expat Indians. I do realize, we should not get impacted by the people surrounding us and should continue living our life on our own terms. However, believe it or not our surroundings do impact us subconsciously. There are so many things which I did not do when I came to Malaysia and resisted for a very long time but after 7 years I see myself changing few of the things automatically because all the people around me were doing it and I don't want to change my "normal".
I love my country. I think everyone does like me. Whenever, there is an introduction that I have to give at work or at any place I always mention. "Hi, my name is Ronak Shah and I am from India". I always had the connection of doing good for the country in whatever way possible. Like if I have a job here, I pay my taxes here which benefits the country, if I stay here I spend here mostly food, clothing and all other items that I buy which helps the local economy. I want to contribute to India success story in some way or the other even if my contribution is very small.
New family And finally, this might be the most important thing in this list. We are going to have a wonderful baby soon and we think that being in India is the best for the baby. As per us, the environment, the people and the "normal" in India is the best for the upcoming baby.
There will be times maybe after 1 month, 1 year or 10 years when I might look back and question my decision "Was I right in moving back to India when everything was going on so well there?" and this post is a reminder for me as to why I took the decision to move back. I do understand that there will be challenges here as well, but let me spend some time, then I will write about those challenges as well and then we can compare if I still agree that it was the right decision to move back here and if we are in net positive overall.

From Cubicles to Coconut Trees : A Retiree's Journey from the USA to Malaysia
A little over a year ago, one of my good friends, Jean Hew, told me that she have been watching this very interesting expat who's posting about his life on YouTube and he happens to be showcasing some houses around my area. Which means, he lives just nearby!
I checked out his videos and his voice is angelic, it's super calming like Frederic Chopin's Andante Cantabile. I emailed him, and introduced myself, the formal and traditional way, as he's not very active on Instagram back then and we quickly became good friends, and neighbors since he just lives across the street.
In this episode of In The Spotlight, I'm truly honored to be featuring my very good friend Andrew Taylor (  @andrewtaylor4558  ) to share with us his story and experiences of navigating and living in Malaysia as an American Expat, and how social media, particularly YouTube, have changed his life for the better. Do check out his YouTube Channel too. It's super interesting. I bet you'll be hooked!
Be sure to like, comment, and most importantly share if you find this podcast useful. Thank you very much and advance and Enjoy the Show!

the amount of wealthy asians in my notes saying "this is dumb as fuck you're insane this doesn't apply to me my family is Malaysian / Indian / whatever and we have lived all over the world travelling for work and we are always expats wherever we live and I am very well travelled and you don't know what you're talking about this is US centric" you and your family aren't travelling and working as maids and labourers though are they? they aren't living in dubai as labourers working 16 hours a day and living in shanties 12 ppl to a room with their passports stolen from them yeah? they're working cushy white collar jobs for some company and living in serviced apartments that get cleaned by people from their own countries who are definitely not called Expats yeah? the indonesian lady in a tudung cleaning your rental flat in Riyadh isn't called an expat is she? she's called a migrant worker. but she's only there temporarily to work, just like you. huh I wonder what the difference is? the Filipino lady who cleans your house in Malaysia isn't called an expat is she? the only thing separating you from her is your Class status, and it blinds you to your privilege. are you fucking stupid or are you going to actually think about what i'm saying

i love being southeast asian.
despite whatever unhappy history, despite the rise of ethnonationalism and racism in our countries; despite the fact that most of us remain in the global south under the invisible thumb of western empires and conglomerates, exploited by rich expats and beg-packers; despite the conservatism, the bigotry, the pain and prejudice and the corruption.
despite all that, i love where i am from. this is my home.
my hands tenderly trace the lines of our history and find within it a colourful collection of influences that continue to shape us until today:
the native malays, javanese, sundanese, minangkabau, bugis, visayan, tagalog, and other dominant peoples.
alongside indigenous tribes like the iban, kadazan, sama-bajau, temuan, penan, jakun, and hundreds upon hundreds more ethnic groups.
all of us holding onto our ancestors' mysticism and spirituality and animism, the watchful gaze of legacy fixed on us as we move through an ever-changing and modernising world (and what is modernity anyway? isn't civilisation overrated?).
and then the chinese peoples. the hainanese, hokkien and cantonese and more, many of whom came here due to trade in the pre-colonial era, but then most arrived as the imported labour for the colonial powers.
but this is their home too. we live here together, and through them we all celebrate lunar new year and the mid-autumn festival. all of us give red envelopes during our many festivals. we give oranges that symbolise prosperity and ring in the year of the rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat. we hold lion dance performances in our malls and marks. we eat and exchange mooncakes.
and then the indian peoples, though mostly tamil indians from south india, but also sikhs, malayalis, and punjabis, who arrived and assimilated and spread their culture and beliefs much earlier before the pre-colonial era, causing the indianisation of southeast asia. then more indian peoples came during the colonial era, again, as imported labour, working our fields or donning the uniform of our common oppressors, kept walled away from us despite how alike we look and sound.
because truly we do sound the same. sanskrit remains an abundant source for a large chunk of our languages. i hear the vedic mantras and can pick apart words that sound familiar. hinduism and buddhism still leaves its traces in our cultures even for those of us who've shifted to islam.
and yes, islam. we're not what the west thinks of when they talk about the muslim world, but southeast asia has some of the largest muslim populations in the world. because through trade, since the medieval times, islam came here and with it brought so many arabic influences that has come to shape our languages and customs, with plenty of our cultures having since been morphed around islamic beliefs and ideas. in malaysia and indonesia and brunei (and perhaps even certain parts of the philippines) you'll find a mosque or a prayer room everywhere you go. and every ramadan millions of us fast, every eid all of us dress up and visit each other's houses for feasts and festivities.
then of course came european colonisation at the hands of the portugese, dutch, british (in malaysia and indonesia's case we got all three), spanish, and french their reigns lasting over 400 years. and from them we came european culture and more new languages, english quickly becoming a second language (or even a first language) for so many of us, missionaries building churches and spreading the word of jesus christ as the son of god; with their fair features they draw a line between us and them, between the civilised and the barbarians, between the light-haired light-eyed and the unruly dark-haired dark-eyed.
and then comes world war 2 and the japanese invasion, and for most it was so brutal and violent, and for the rest it was miserable, with famine and inflation but we were forced to sing songs in japanese anyway, to watch their planes fly in the sky towards their enemies, to swallow their ideas in our parched throats.
and then the war ended and wounds began to heal, and then came the 1980s until now with all its shiny technology: nintendo, panasonic, television and anime, and now we have leagues of people learning japanese language and culture anyway, except now it is done wholeheartedly, and as it turns out japanese isn't even that different from our own cultures anyway. houses on stilts made of wood with thatch roofs, making our living from the sea and coast, eating rice for every meal, our phonetics and theirs so alike.
and today we have waves of their expats migrating here because of course they do, we're the Global South™ and for them it's cheap and affordable, so we have little japans sprouting here and there and sometimes i go to a random street and find signs written in japanese and read bits of broken hiragana.
and it's beautiful, being able to move through this world and find the handprints we've all left upon it. it's a wonderful amalgam of so many traditions and colours and beliefs and language all mixing around in this huge bubbling melting pot.
and i'm not chinese or indian or arab or british but when i see them on tv, i'm also seeing a part of me, i hear the words in their tongue and i recognise them as mine, i eat their food and know them as intimately as my own.
but of course our politicians, our kings and our prime ministers (and the divide-and-conquer rule of colonisers now gone) continue to divide us and make us hate each other, fanning flames of distrust and fear of that-which-is-different.
it's such a shame too, because it's so special. it's what makes us us, our dozens of creoles, the way we can speak a sentence comprising vernacular from at least four languages and we all understand each other anyway.
we have a word in malay, "rojak", which is also the name of a dish that mixes a bunch of different ingredients, and is found in malaysian, indonesian and singaporean cuisine. but where i'm from, we also say "rojak" to mean anything that's an eclectic mixture of things, things that seemingly don't go together and aren't necessarily pleasing to the eye but still, somehow, it works, in fact it tastes good, spicy and flavourful and hearty.
and that's us: southeast asia, all of it, a beautiful rojak culture. and it's ours.

⟨ michelle yeoh. cis female. she/her. 61. ⟩ We just saw maria cao ( xīn yán cǎo (欣妍 草) ) entering the one man's trash. I heard through the grapevine that their loyalties lie with the Jolly Rogers and that they also go by sweeney todd . Be careful, they work for them as an assassin and can sometimes be cold, calculating, or even cruel but I’ve also heard some people say that they were loyal, efficient and quite meticulous.— drea. she/they. 40. edt (gmt-5). trypophobia (visual), animal abuse & death, child abuse & pedophilia
Tumblr media
there's a dossier included in the layout for her blog but as not everyone goes to look at blogs I'll put that basic information here too.
NAME: maria cao / xīn yán cǎo (欣妍 草) ALIAS: sweeney todd AGE: 61 GENDER: demifem PRONOUNS: she / they OCCUPATION: assassin SEXUALITY demisexual / grey aromantic FACECLAIM: michelle yeoh HEIGHT: 5'6" WEIGHT: 134 lbs HAIR COLOR: black EYE COLOR: brown TATTOOS: for her to know and you to find out SCARS: varied and many PIERCINGS: both ears twice OTHER FEATURES: often times 'dead' eyes POSITIVE TRAITS: loyal, efficient, meticulous NEGATIVE TRAITS: cold, calculating, cruel LIKES: murder, the finer things, playing the game, chaos DISLIKES: rules, order, poverty MBTI: entj BIRTHPLACE: ipoh, malaysia CURRENT HOME: penthouse owned in downtown london NATIONALITY: european citizen (expat of several countries) ETHNICITY: Malayasian / Chinese LANGUAGES: english, french, malay, chinese, japanese, & italian
born to poverty and eventually realizing she much preferred the finer things in life, maria chose to be wealthy instead. it involved utilizing skills she'd learned through the military and her own disillusionment with society as a whole (and her mental disconnect from most of her emotions) to become an assassin of some reputation before her loyalty was claimed by the Jolly Rogers with the understanding that she will still take outside contracts as long as they do not interfere with the tenets of the Jolly Rogers' best interests.
once married to joaquin vidal — the only man she ever loved and is still very much (quietly, sometimes) unhealthily attached to, she now serves herself and the JR and oftentimes spends her free time attending social events to keep up appearances or training in her penthouse (modified to house its own studio for more involved training) — though most notably doing her very best to get under the skin of her former paramour and still (sometimes) friend.
quick connection ideas
public face friends (meaning those she's mostly around for public appearances and 'cover')
friends (limited, she's hard to earn the trust of)
lovers (sex only as she doesn't really do emotions outside of a very specific instance)
co-workers in the jolly rogers who she's grown to like more than just in the sense that they're on the same team
clients
targets (limited but if someone puts a hit out on you she can be the one tasked with it and hasn't pulled the trigger (dad jokes) yet for x reason)
your ideas here, i'm open to hearing anything.

Teachers' Day
5th October 2022
It's International Teachers' Day!
We normally celebrate teachers' day on 16th May! Celebrating it on October was a little new to me as I didn't notice it until a parent brought flowers for all teachers! I was shocked to see my bouquet was slightly too big!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I remember I wasn't having a good day as some of the expats teacher left. I was contemplating if I should leave too as I felt the environment wasn't right for me. Also, Uncle Alex was leaving to go back to Malaysia and I was starting to feel lonely and wonder if I could cope.
But seeing the bouquet of flower just made my day. What more, Krispy Kreme Donut with minion face was a part of the flowers too. That put a smile on my face!
Thank you, Parent! It's truly a blessing to know this particular parent that cared for me like her own child!

once again, upper middle class cis gay male expats in malaysia prove to be endlessly disappointing.
"I wore an extra rainbow bangle to a marathon! yay go pride! where can I watch eurovision?"
"is it alright to post calls for pro-palestine rallies in this whatsapp group with people who otherwise have plenty of money to donate to the cause?"
"nope, too political, sorry. we'd prefer not to offend."
just fuck off. really feeling a homophobic streak right now. can all of you fucking white people AND locals who studied overseas or whatever, just leave. you all who find yourselves more comfortable throwing in your lot with other gay 10s who don't care about anything other than living a lavish lifestyle typical of gay men who don't care about anyone but themselves.
have fun returning to the countries whence you came, where they slowly regress your rights, and you won't even realise the dogs slowly coming for you because you comfortably sat yourself atop the pyramid and enjoyed the view from therein.
no more second chances for these people. I am so frustrated. our activist ancestors would be so fucking disappointed in all of you.

Thank you, Malaysia!
A 26 year old boy who has stayed in the one city all his life, one day decides to leave not only his city but his country all together to embark upon a journey in a completely new country where he knows no one. All he has is this new job and flight ticket to a country he has only heard of. He has so many questions on his mind.
Is this company genuine ?
I have heard stories of foreign worker exploitation. What if this company takes away my passport on the first day and make me their slave?
Being vegetarian, will I get decent vegetarian food to eat there?
Where will I stay?
Will I like this new job?
....and so many other questions.
Yes, you guessed it right. This boy is no other than me.
Now looking back, I find myself a bit naive to come to a new country without doing any kind of research. But that naivety and blind trust really has helped me a lot.
My first impression of Malaysia was very good as I was impressed with tall buildings, wide roads, clean surroundings and discipline in traffic. It was a very good learning experience working at a place where there were people from 30 different nationality. Before coming here, I didn't interact much with people from different country and what little I did was very awkward and low in confidence. This was the company where I was regularly interacting with foreigners. I went from being awkward and shy, to talking regularly with them and also making friendships with so many of them. We all exchanged our cultures and traditions with each other and learned a lot from each other.
Since I was very new to this place and had no friends and family I got a lot of time to be with myself. I started to know myself a bit more. I started understanding what I like, what I don't like, how I like etc. It was a truly a defining moment for me. I was discovering myself and it is this phase which actually also defined my career at large. It also gave me the confidence to follow and do things that I love.
I did lot of things on my own like cooking, washing utensils, washing clothes etc. I had never done these things but now since I am staying alone I have to do all of these. Two years in Malaysia and I got married with the love of my life and it was also made possible because I had came to Malaysia. This is a story of it's own which I may or may not share on a public platform.
In these 7 years, I worked with two companies and they have shaped me in different ways. It was also during these 7 years I got an opportunity to work with World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank (WB) which is an achievement of it's own.
I made some wonderful friends here. Friends that are as good as family and some of them will stay with us forever.
So many things that I owe to Malaysia. Now that I am ending my journey here, I want to say thank you to Malaysia for being so kind and patient with me. Truly, thank you so much. Now to summarize I just want to include some highlights of my 7 years here. All of these observations are compared to my home country India.
Unique Malaysian Things :
Malaysia consists of 3 races majorly. Malaysian, Chinese and Indian (Tamil) and all of them live with peace and harmony.
Malaysian are very patient in general. In an intersection, they will allow other cars to pass first, allowing pedestrians to cross, patiently waiting for someone to pay their parking ticket while in queue and so many other examples.
They are very disciplined drivers as well. They do follow traffic rules.
Malaysia is very safe. You can forget something somewhere and most of the times you will find that thing at same place even after 24 hours.
Food choices of various range. I have had lunch/dinner for 5 RM with a drink and also 100 RM. You can get food according to your budget.
Random Acts of Kindness :
Driver who returned my mobile after I forgot it in the cab.
Stranger who payed for pay and use toilet fee for my mom when my parents were visiting us in Malaysia and I wasn't around to pay.
Two random girls who helped my parents to self check-in their luggage at the airport when they were returning back.
Things Malaysia can improve upon :
Quality of things are not that up-to the mark. We had 5 Gas Lighters in 5 years whereas in India home we are still using a single lighter for 20 years. Toilet jet spray was replaced 4 times in 5 years, whereas in India we haven't changed the jet spray in 15 years.
Too much of single-use plastic. Most of the grocery store charge 0.20 RM for the bags and some of them still give free of charge but still it is too much of plastic and should be banned.
If I had to start over in Malaysia what would I do differently?
Driving - I started driving in Malaysia in my last year but it would have been very helpful if I had learned it earlier. There were few places that we didn't go because there was no reliable way to reach there using public transport or by cab.
Learning Malay - It would have really helped me in various situations to communicate with locals in the language that they are comfortable in.
As my journey ends here and the new one resumes in India I want to say Terima Kasih, Malaysia. See you again!

大家好! LL, my expat friend from China, spent Chinese New Year in Shandong, her hometown, and she was eager to catch up upon her return. We had much to update each other over shao kao (Chinese BBQ) and, although she doesn't drink often, she happily shared beers with me because the meat and vegetables skewers were very delicious. The mutton ones were divine: tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. Finally, we shared a brownie for dessert with coffee.

I chanced upon a Muslim stall which serves mee goreng (fried noodles) along with various dishes, so I decided to try it. An overeasy egg, egg tofu with cabbage, broccoli with hei mu er (tree ear mushrooms) and stirfried bittergourd completed the meal. Everything, especially the bittergourd, was delicious and the noodles were QQ, just the way I like them. The veggies were fresh and crunchy and I was so stuffed from all that food, I sipped my coffee very slowly. I'll be back to try their other dishes!

I revisited the fish soup stall, ordered their new mala fish thick bee hoon (rice vermicelli) soup and instantly regretted my decision. It was a very hot afternoon; once I tasted the spice, I knew my tee would be soaked in sweat by the end of the meal. Nonetheless, the thick slices of fish were very fresh and they're what I keep returning for. I like the original and tomato broths best, but this mala version would be great on cold rainy days. I might try the fried fish instead of blanched fish slices next time.

Globally, thousands struggle to make ends meet as hyperinflation over the past few years caused prices of basic essentials to skyrocket. Daily meals with seafood, fish, poultry and meat that used to be taken for granted are a thing of the past for many households. Being able to afford nourishment is a blessing; I'm grateful that family members, close friends and I still eat relatively well. We've cut back on unnecessary spending, sure, but we don't go to bed hungry and consume enough nutrients. There's much to be thankful for despite these leaner times.

Ramadan this year is an especially sombre one; Muslims around the world watch in horror as Israel killed over 31,000 innocent Palestinians. As if that is not bad enough, plans to attack Rafah, where over 1 million displaced civilians are sheltering, have been approved. More aid is slated to flow into Gaza, but it won't completely prevent genocide if Israel continues to murder thousands of innocent people. A permanent ceasefire and two-state solution are the only ways to end the conflict. 下次见!

this shit makes me so angry because i deal with assholes like this all the time in ASIA where i live as an ASIAN (not a US AMERICAN!!) who treat their maids and domestic workers like absolute garbage, the amount of abuse that happens is insane and you think you're somehow exempt from fucked up class relations and being clueless about how poor people in your own country are treated because you're not a Yankee? are you seriously stupid? i despise people like you more than anything, people who should know better and don't because you have Zero class awareness and you think that you know everything simply due to your nationality when you know damn well you are not treated the same as others in your own country let alone elsewhere in the world due to your economic status.
I've seen Indian women Related to me abuse their Indonesian maids in Malaysia as though it was their God given right and lost my shit at them, reported them to local orgs that help abused maids find safer work, told everyone what I saw, cut them out of my life, made clear to them that they are absolute scum of the earth and that the only thing separating them from their maid is the Money they have. You are probably no better than those women, treating human beings like property and thinking yourself the most oppressed person alive simply because you're from the global majority and that any critique of your Lifestyle is simply because the person Doesn't Get It because they're American. "This is US centric I am an expat when I am a Malaysian and live in Dubai" I'm from your country and I know exactly the context of this Lifestyle and I am telling you that you are a cunt. Your Class status shields you from the greatest harm the global south faces, you will never face the danger those labelled "migrant workers" face but you parade yourself online like you are the expert because you hold an Asian passport and you have travelled everywhere. all that money and no brain or compassion and a biggest victim complex. and you will continue to play victim because the westerners are watching but i see you and I know your heart is rotten. fuck all of you for real
