Anri Minami (Konomi Naito) goofing around the miniature scale buildings display at Ultra Heroes EXPO (formerly known as Ultraman Festival) at the Sunshine City Mall in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
That display - basically a huge diorama with various Ultras and kaiju fighting it out - is one of my favorite parts of the event.

If you’ve been on social media today, you may have seen a certain word trending: Zouis. But what does it mean? Well, Zouis is portmanteau of Zayn and Louis. Specifically, Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson from One Direction.
The pair were spotted together in Los Angeles, with Tomlinson attending Malik’s gig—sending the internet into a frenzy
Tumblr media
With Zouis spreading like wildfire on social media, this story operates as an interesting example of how fandoms can deal with grief, and, for once, how the internet can be a positive communal force.
What’s Happening With Zouis? Why Were Zayn Malik And Louis Tomlinson Together?
Zayn Malik is currently on his Stairway To The Sky tour, and is playing several nights at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California.
Louis Tomlinson—who was in boyband One Direction with Malik—attended the show on Jan. 29. This is the first time the pair, known as Zouis, have been together publicly since One Direction bandmate Liam Payne’s funeral on Nov. 20, 2024.
After Malik left the group in 2015, One Direction broke up the year after, and the members have rarely been together since, with each pursuing solo careers.
This makes the appearance of Zouis a special moment for fans, as well as seemingly for Malik and Tomlinson themselves, with the former referencing his bandmate’s attendance at his concert in glowing terms:
How Did Social Media React The Appearance Of Zouis?
The online world went wild for the return of Zouis. There are tens of thousands of tweets about the event. Many of which show pure enthusiasm:
While others contain simple declarations of love towards Zouis:
Tumblr media
There’s a sombre tone to some posts which reference the death of Liam Payne:
While difference accounts are self-referential about their own reaction to the partial One Direction reunion:
Tumblr media
There’s one overwhelming trend though: pure excitement and adulation.
Why Is Social Media Reacting To Zouis In This Way?
There are a few things at play. Firstly, One Direction fans are renowned for their obsession with the group. Combined with the size of the boyband—3.4 million people saw them during their Where We Are tour alone—this means there’s a huge community of interested people whenever news about them drops. Like Zouis.
But there’s also a more sombre side to this overwhelming online reaction, and that can be linked to a sense of loss.
It’s common for fans to form parasocial relationships with people they follow. Effectively, this is when individuals believe they have a close tie with public figures, even though this is a one-way friendship. Often, this is driven by the perceived intimacy of social media.
This can induce serious emotions. So, when a member of a group like One Direction passes away, as is the case with Liam Payne, it can feel as though someone they’re close with had died.
When Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson came together for the first time since the funeral, it can feel like a cathartic moment for fans, as though things are righting themselves. One way of dealing with this outpouring of emotion, then, is to post on social media.
And that’s a key way of viewing this explosion of activity about Zouis: a celebration.
People are not only expressing joy at seeing members of One Direction together, but this enthusiasm also acts a tribute to Liam Payne. This creates a sense of community, of an entire fandom coming together and praising a new chapter in something they love.
Ultimately, the spread of posts about Zouis displays a positive side to social media, one where people share a connection and come together in unity. In these divided times, that’s a beautiful thing to see.

Where are they getting “Lou is a racist psychopath” from? I’m convinced they hear/read things about his dad and attribute them to him because they’re too dumb to realize his dad was also a public figure.
Also, the gall to go after Lou for some imagined offense when they stan Ryan Guzman.
Okay, this will be THE ONLY time I'm going to address this issue because it's ridiculous and completely coated in blind faith.
In 2014, Lou posted these memes to his Instagram (at this time, Lou only had around 5 credits to his name. The biggest one being, 'How I Met Your Mother'. He was not widely known)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were others, also memes (also not made by him) that he posted... HOWEVER, they have been removed since the BoBs went deep diving to find problematic shit from him.
He did not apologize for them but there is absolutely NO PR team on the planet that would advise him to address memes from 2014. Especially when these things were only brought up in bad faith by roughly 400 butthurt people on Twitter.
In 2015, he posted this collage. At this time, he judged at fitness expos all the time. The Tahoe Show was something he hosted and helped put together. Not to mention, he tagged the women....
Tumblr media
Look at the comments. They don't care.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We have all done stupid shit in our past. Our younger selves are problematic af but we learn from our past and all we can do is try and better ourselves.
If people can't get past these things that is completely valid, however, I have made my own decision on the matter and although I wish better choices were made, I don't condemn people on who they were over 10 years ago unless they're still that person today. Lou has shown, in my eyes, he is not that person anymore.
I have also never seen a legit racist post black lives matter videos on their Instagram as Lou has done and I can't find it but he also posted an emotional video talking about how upset he was when Kobe Bryant died.
Please make educated decisions on your own. Don't follow blindly.

Dear Mr. Radguy,
I know that Daisuke was born in South Africa but I'm just curious why? It's rather odd that a Japanese dude was born in South Africa and lived there til he was like 7. I've tried fact checking this and everything is in Japanese.
With kind regards, Anon
Hello!
Daisuke doesn't really talk about it too much, but he mentions in the Artworks of GGX 2000-2004 interview that his parents moved to Johannesburg for work. Translation by fairymisao:
I was born in South Africa because of my parents’ work, and we returned to Japan soon after, but I ended up living over there again from 4th grade of elementary school till the second half of 7th grade.
He says a little more about his experiences in South Africa further on in the Artworks 2004 interview, too, through the link.
I ended up translating quite a big chunk of an interview for this ask, so I'm slipping that under a readmore (alongside some other stuff). It's mostly just bonus material since the Artworks 2004 quote already kinda answered your question lol
There was an interview at Tokyo Game Show 2016 where he says about the same thing as the Artworks 2004 quote above. I'll do a quick translation of the whole segment about it since a full translation of this interview doesn't exist for me to link to:
Katsuhiro Harada: That's enough from [Toshimichi] Mori-san for the time being. Ishiwatari-san, there's something I've wanted to ask you about for a while now. If I look you up on Wikipedia, it says that you were born in Johannesburg, South Africa. I thought this was part of the background for a character or something, but is it real? Daisuke Ishiwatari: People often say that, but it's true, yeah. It was simply because of circumstances for my parents. Harada: I think that Johannesburg is kind of a scary place, and I can't help but wonder if your father's job isn't something like Fist of the North Star. Ishiwatari: No, no [laughs]. When I was born in South Africa, there was apartheid and during those times there were areas where white people lived (白人圏). In those places, we were treated like honorary whites (名誉白人),* and security wasn't particularly bad. I came to Japan right after I was born, but due to my parents' circumstances, I lived in Johannesburg from the 4th to the 8th grade. *Note: During the apartheid era in South Africa, non-white Japanese were treated as "honorary whites" for economic reasons. [this note is part of the interview article, not added by me]
The Wikipedia article on "honorary whites" mentions Japanese people moving to Johannesburg specifically for business, but that a lot of people questioned why they were granted that status. (also yes that is Harada Tekken interviewing him lol)
During Anime Expo 2015, Daisuke talked about living in South Africa a little:
Jeremy Booth: You were born in South Africa, is that correct? What was your family doing there? Ishiwatari: Yes, in Johannesburg. They were there for work. [...] Booth: So are you technically South African-Japanese then? Ishiwatari: At the time, I had dual South African/Japanese citizenship, but when I was taking my tests for college, I got a conscription notice from the South African army. I threw away my [South African] citizenship then.
IIRC Daisuke was in college at the tail end of the '80s into the early 1990s.
Hope this is the information you were looking for!! Daisuke being born in South Africa interests me a lot, so I tend to mentally bookmark it when he mentions it
