Why they're the Worst (TM)

Rainflower:

Basically disowned her son after he was permanently disabled due to falling in the river and smashing his jaw on a rock. Had him RENAMED after his injury (Stormkit -> Crookedkit) and said she couldn't love him because he was "ugly". Spent the rest of her life ignoring him and heavily favoring her other son and Crooked's brother. AND YET. SHE STILL GOT TO GO TO HEAVEN???

She didn’t allow him as a small child to sleep in the same nest as her and his brother, basically the cat version of throwing him out on the streets. Rainflower also forced their leader to change his name to something that reflected his disability, and once he was old enough to provide for himself effectively disowned him. This extreme emotional abuse had a huge effect on both of her sons, and caused her disabled son to literally start training in cat hell because he didn’t feel appreciated anywhere else.

Mapleshade:

Oh boy, strap in bc this one’s crazy. So, Mapleshade was a cat who died several generations before the main series began. She had kids through an illegal relationship with the man who killed her leader’s son, and she and her very young children were ultimately exiled from their Clan when the truth of their parentage was revealed. Mapleshade tried to take them across the river to their father, and all three kittens were swept away and drowned. Mapleshade then went on a grief-fueled killing spree, driven by hallucinations of her dead children urging her to kill the cats she perceived to be responsible for their deaths. Eventually, she confronted her ex and his pregnant mate (bc oh yeah, it turns out Mapleshade was the Other Woman), and the ex was killed protecting his pregnant mate. Mapleshade also died in this fight, but her hatred was so strong that she basically became a demon in cat hell and declared eternal suffering on her ex’s entire bloodline. Two generations later, the ex’s grandson breaks his jaw as a kitten and is rejected by his mother. Mapleshade swoops in as a maternal figure and promises to make the poor kid into the best warrior he can be, despite his broken jaw being a significant disability. She grooms and manipulates him throughout his entire life, and every person he loves dies horribly, one by one. Whether or not Mapleshade actually caused these deaths is unclear, but she does make Crookedstar (the cat she’s been manipulating) believe that she’s caused them. This is because when Crookedstar was a small, rejected child, she made him promise her that he would always put his Clan first. Being a kid, Crookedstar made the promise without a second thought, not realizing that Mapleshade meant that he could never be close with anyone (since that would mean putting his loved ones before his Clan). Therefore, Crookedstar thinks that every death of his loved ones is a punishment from Mapleshade, his maternal figure, for breaking the promise he made as a kitten.

Jerico, Kassian, Sloane:  I was experimenting with getting a chibi style I liked.  Found it!  I decided to give Sloane puppy ears and tail and then Cat said I should give Jerico a cat tail and panther ears.  Summing this up... Jerico is a very bad kitty and got put in timeout, and Sloane was a good boi and got taiyaki which is his favorite treat.  Kass is being spiteful and loving on Sloane cause bad kitty's don't get pets.

Addu (OLD ART): Ok this has been sitting around my damn computer for a while but it's time folks, to meet Ryder's Grandfather the entity Addu and pretty much the reason Ryder is a badass who can call storms and everything else.  He doesn't actually learn anything about his heritage for years, of course, how could he?  He was sold into slavery when he was 3.  Addu is known by other entities as The Maelstrom, as such Ryder has earned the title of The Rising Gale among the entities.  This is due to being the one descendant of any entity to show the powers of an entity (yes, they don't create other entities, they create demons when they bump uglies - not to say there aren't other ways to create demons... I know, I know, stop confusing us Koy! I'll get species sheets and historical shit up soon ahhhh!) and another incident I don't plan to reveal until I actually bring in Addu.  Even his father did not show this finesse though he was the son of not one but two entities (Addu's mate is Tiamat btw).

How did they first meet? Honestly, I forget. I think they literally bumped into each other on the street and he went full flirt mode.

Who felt romantic feelings first? I dunno. It was a tie of denial. But I think he faced it first.

Who gets jealous easily? They’re both pretty chill on the outside, but both are jealous asses on the inside. Glad is more vocal about it.

Who is more protective? Even, but in different ways. Glad is more subtle about protecting Lola because of her pride, but Lola is more overt about her protection.

Who remembers the little things? Gladstone.

Who talks about their feelings more? They avoid this crap unless at crisis levels.

Who uses the cheesier pickup lines? IT’S A CONTEST BETWEEN THEM.

What does a first date look like for them? It was a very innocent afternoon date at the ice cream parlor. Glad was a very patient gent for a long time.

What do they like to do together? They’re competitive braggarts, so anything they can do to show up other people or couples. But Glad also gets lazy, so it boils down to annoying everyone in their life and laughing about it later. Plus vacations.

Which one gets angry the most, leaving the other to calm them down? L-o-l-a

Do they like PDA? Ayep--mostly to annoy others. But as gross as they are, they do like holding hands.

What are their big spoon / little spoon arrangements? I think it depends on who had the more upsetting day, but Glad is pleased to be cuddled or be the cuddler equally, so it depends on Lola’s mood.

Does one like the cuddle more than the other? At first it was Glad, but as they got more serious and committed, it became Lola’s deal.

Who hogs the blankets? Gladstone all the way. Spoiiiiled.

Who’s more likely to initiate sex? That’s a big 50-50 there, they’re always on each other.

Who’s the kinkiest? I think Glad has Lola beat on this by a few things.

Who is the top and bottom in their sex life? Are they interchangeable? Extremely switchy couple. 

Who likes giving and who likes receiving oral? >_> It’s pretty tied but Glad is very talented and has a certain “advantage” that most people do not when he’s giving.

Girlfriends S1E03...SPOILER ALERT!!!

Okay.....

So are we just not going to talk about this week’s episode?? (My apologies if its been discussed to death and I missed it)

OMG!!  Of all of the characters to kill off...

Why did the writer’s have to pick on the poor kitteh?!?!  *Batwings squinches up her eyes and prays that it’s only a flesh wound*

And that Carol Hardcastle - what a LOON!!  Although I was glad to find out that perhaps Mickey hadn’t been involved with her, I’m still not convinced that he’s “innocent” - if you know what I mean.  It could be that Mickey set this whole thing up in order to make things easier for Linda but somehow, I still think he’s a bit of a player in the long run.   

And what about Gail?  I think that Gail has allowed herself to become a doormat where her family is concerned.  I loved her Mum this episode; standing up to Tom when he was getting mouthy.  But is Dave all that innocent either?  Tom keeps accusing him of being out with another woman - and all Dave does is say “it’s not like that.”  We don’t know much about this other woman and it makes me wonder if Dave’s just trying to keep both sides of his bread buttered.  But he does get extra brownie points for always being their to save the day, even when Gail isn’t aware she needs saving!!

I was glad to see Sue stand up to John this episode.  And the look on John’s face when he realized his perfect little world is likely to come crashing down around his ears.  I hope he ends up with no one by his side in the end but somehow, guys like that always land on their feet and come out smelling like a rose....*grumble grumble grumble*  I’m keeping my fingers crossed that when they are finished with the tribunal, Sue will be the new owner-director of the magazine.  She was very powerful in that scene and I wanted to cheer when she was finished!  

I have to say this though - I’m worried about the future of this show.  Ms. Mellor is stuffing sooooooooo many women-family-relationship issues into this first series - where will the girls go from here??  It also makes everything feel very compartmentalized.  There is some overlap with Gail’s son being involved with Linda’s daughter - and Sue’s son defending Linda - and Sue giving Gail relationship advice about Dave - I think it might have been better to have saved some of it for later in the series and have it “teased out” as a sort of soft cliff-hanger to leave us wanting a second series.  

For example - we’re hitting menopause, cheating, age concern (Sue), caring for aging parents, raising grandchildren, good kids making bad decisions (Tom), gay children, gay children having babies (gay and lesbian couples as families), being the other woman, divorce, job loss (Mickey), depression and possible suicide...

I feel like we’re going to get to the end, everything’s going to be tied up into three neat little packages, leaving the girls with nothing to do but live their lives and meddle in the lives of their children and neighbors - ala Coronation Street.  Okay, so maybe comparing Girlfriends to a soap opera like Corrie is a little extreme but hopefully you catch my drift.

Trash Panda

What’s that noise coming from the trash?  Is it a monster?  No it’s a raucous raccoon!  Today we’re reviewing Trash Panda which was published by Gamewright in 2018.  It’s a 2-4 player competitive game, with an age rating of 8 years and up.

Trash Panda’s art style is bold, colourful, and cute.  At first glance it can be easy to be dismiss the art style as basic but give it another, closer, look and you’ll notice small details that give the game more visual depth.  The dice is nicely weighted and solid while the symbols are clear and bright.  We greatly approve of the tokens as they are made of wood and are extremely durable.  The only token that has some wear to it is the Recycle token, but it is still easy to identify it.

The game rules are very simple. You roll the dice and collect the corresponding token from the pile. You can choose when to stop rolling and at which point you resolve the token actions. If you roll a duplicate for a token you’ve already claimed your turn ends and passes to the next person. The 6 tokens are:

· Trash Cans: Take 2 cards from the draw pile (The trash can) and add them to your hand ready for use (there is no hand limit).

· Trees: Take 2 cards from your hand and place them in your stash. These count as points

· Trash Can/Tree: Players can choose to take 1 card from the trash can or stash 1 card.

· Raccoon Paws and Bag:  Take 1 card from a player and add it to your hand. This can be blocked by the player being stolen from using either Kitteh or Doggo cards.

· Raccoon Eye Mask: The player takes the top card from the trash can and shows the other players. They can then stash that card as many times as they like but the player showing the card draws a card for each card stashed.

· Recycling: This can be swapped for any other token. If you have 5 tokens already you may as well stop as there is no token to swap for.

You can use cards from your hand to influence yours and other players turn. Blammo cards allow you to ignore your last roll and keep rolling, this is particularly handy for a duplicated roll. Nanners cards allow you to ignore your last roll and stop rolling. Some of the other cards allow you to resolve a token twice and make another player keep rolling when they want to stop.  By playing cards it means mean you cannot stash them to score points.

Players need to stash as many cards as possible for cards to count. Any cards in the players hand when there are no more cards in the trash pile don’t count when adding up points. The only cards that contributes to the final score are those which have been stashed.  When counting points at the end of the game some cards give points for having the 2nd and 3rd most cards. Stashed Blammo cards always count for 1 point per card, there is no 1st, 2nd or 3rd point system for them. Kitteh and Doggo cards are not stashable and don’t contribute to players final scores. The scores are clearly shown on each card for clarification. The player with the most points wins.

 The dice and shuffling of the decks means there is a lot of luck in Trash Panda. Often players will bust out and roll a duplicate when the token has already been taken. This is entirely random and keeps each game unique and fun. Resolving tokens twice or forcing players to keep rolling when they want to stop can be a good tactical move, but means you can’t stash the card. A player with a lot of cards could resolve the stash 2 token twice to stash 4 cards and improve their chances of a better score at the end of the game. Choosing the point at which to stop rolling is also important. Get too greedy and you could end up with nothing happening on your turn. It’s all a big gamble.

The suggested playtime for Trash Panda is 20 minutes.  For this game our play time was 15 minutes and we both felt that this was the right length of time.  We have had games that have lasted 5 minutes and others that lasted nearly 30 minutes. We think the scope for such different play times come from the luck of the dice and how frequently you go bust, as this impacts how quickly you go through the trash pile.  Despite the fact the game’s replay value is high due to the random draw of cards and the dice rolls,  Andy feels this is a game he could only play now and then.  Whereas Kirsty could quite happily play it several times a week.

Trash Panda is a great game to play at home and on the go.  It fits really well on a coffee or train table, although we’d recommend using the box lid to roll the dice in or you might spend most of the game on your knees looking for an escaped dice.  It’s also a brilliant family game and although the age rating is 8 years old and up we have previously played it with our 5-year-old great-niece who was able to play with a little to no guidance after a few turns.  A slight annoyance with the game comes at the end when tallying up your score, as you typically have groupings of the same card meaning there needs to be some hefty shuffling done.  Overall we both enjoy and rate Trash Panda highly.  It’s a versatile game in the fact that it’s easy to play with children but it’s still fun and provides challenges for adult and more experienced gamers.  For this reason we both give Trash Panda an 8/10 rating…and just in case anyone wants to know, Kirsty won by 4 points – blammo for the win.

Weird is totally in. The weirder the better. This brings the unpredictable factor in again, which is totally hilarious. 

Cats Are Easy to Personify. People can relate to cats. So when they take really fat naps on the couch, we can easily relate to them. 

dogs do cute things because they want attention and validation while cats do what they want because they want to. Man’s best friend, am I right? While cats don’t care for your attention, dogs crave attention. So when cats do something stupid, it draws our attention because we would have never thought cats would have drawn our attention to them. 

because cats are jerks. Cats are devil spawn. You always laugh in movies when the bully is “accidently” tripped by the bullied. Pay back time. 

the most compelling explanation for our interest in cats, may be the most simple: we’re in awe of them. We all wish we could be as graceful as cats. They climb trees and they land on their feet every time. We’re clumsy.

Kittehs Are Cute! When you see cute things, you have to watch them. Like surprised kitten. 

Goodbye Kittehz, Hello Doggos? Dogs are the most loyal pets of all the land. We praise them so much it’s ridiculous. Cats don’t care though.
