I would love to hear about Wally's dynamics with canon characters! Also very interested in knowing how the Librarian Guy feels about them, if you have any new thoughts on him.

This is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to be asked about! Thank you. Now, Wally's got a problem. He's got this system, see? One good turn deserves another - and it goes double for pals. You don't leave a buddy holding the bag. It all works out. When the people he meets inevitably want him to take his brand of localized excitement and move on, least they'll think back on it all fondly. It's a great system.

The hitch is he hasn't gotten Luffy to understand his math. The two met when Luffy was starting to get hungry and Wally was stuck up a tree. Both being naturally affable, it took about five minutes of acquaintanceship for them to solve each others problems(Wally gave his only piece of hard won fruit away without a second thought, generous type. Luffy de-treed him. Stretchy type.), Wally to start calling Luffy "Cap", and for Luffy to decide to take Wally home for more food. If you're doing Wally math, that would be three favors he already owes the guy, and the numbers just keep piling up from there.

I think overall they'd have an uncomplicated friendship. Wally is scruffy looking, talks funny, and shares his food, all admirable traits. Luffy is usually unbothered by the bad luck Wally tends to bring with him (Aside from occasionally indignantly asking "why did you do that?" when something totally out of Wally's control inconveniences him.) Wally thinks Cap is a real gem. Has no notes, trusts his judgement utterly. They should not be allowed to hang out unsupervised. It never ends well. Nami has pieced together that money does not ... continue to exist if Wally gets a hold of it. He falls for scams, sob stories, has been mugged to the extent he's figured out how to streamline the process. To say nothing about the holes that keep ending up in his pockets. She's decided, reasonably so, there's absolutely no reason why Wally should ever even breathe near berries while he's on board. This isn't a problem for him until they get to a town with (FUNNY ANIMAL) races going on. Turns out Wally loves to gamble. He's never won a game in his life - but he's gonna turn that around some day. Just you watch. Being the hardhearted woman she is, she's able to resist his cajoling. Right up until he pitches the shockingly devious scheme that he could bet against her. They should also not be allowed to hang out unsupervised. Now Sanji and Wally have history - Sanji has seen how out of hand Wally (during ill-fated stint as a busboy at the Baratie to pay back the damage he accidentally did) as the jinx can get and is pretty uptight around the scruffy little guy. Wally is flattered that Sanji even remembers him. There's a strict "keep thirty paces away from the kitchen door" rule in effect. The thing is, Wally is so genuinely grateful for "good grub" and has a surprisingly sophisticated palette, it's extremely difficult to stay crabby with him.

I've got a couple other notes, Usopp is the only who can understand the cartoons Wally draws in lieu of leaving notes, if Franky's gonna cry Wally's gonna cry, Wally's convinced Chopper is a miracle worker who brought him back from the brink of death (Wally is seasick the first day on any ship and is always convinced This Time It's The End), and so on and so forth. I think the general reason why Wally spent time onboard the Sunny is it was a very "if we leave him here, he will die" situation. He tried to leave quietly at one port (no need for a fuss y'see) , but he quickly got into trouble, was unceremoniously rescued and retrieved by Zoro, and then Chopper was crying so Wally was crying- When he finally does leave it will be way less sneaky than that.

Librarian Guy is a capable and mature adult who immediately flips into being an absent minded dweeb whenever he's around people who can handle the Problems. It's how you know he's happy and relaxed - he gets bumbling.
