5 years ago I played Assassin's Creed 2. I LOVED Ezio and his costumes. I really wanted to make the Altair armor. So I began to plan it. And even started it. But then trauma hit. I struggled to try and continue but eventually put it in a box to continue later. Every year I tried pulling it out to work on again only to get PTSD flashbacks and back into the box it went. Eventually I used parts to make his original outfit which turned out great and helped me meet and become close friends with the Dom father himself: Carlos Ferro. Even my service dog, Cleopatra,(RIP sweet girl) had an Altair costume, which was another reason Carlos and I became great friends.

Years came and went, as they say. I finally constructed Dracula and won Best in Show at @animebanzai in 2022. That was the push I needed. I pulled the in-progress cosplay of the Altair armor out of the box. Looked at all of it and began to work on it and rework other parts of it, bit by bit. In the posts to follow I will share what photo's I have been able to hang onto and organize as it has been 5 years and all.

Earlier this year, I decided to make a prop every week as Ubisoft celebrated 15 years of the Assassin's Creed franchise. This is a beautiful Assassin Yataghan, wielded by the Mentor Ezio Auditore da Firenze in Assassin's Creed Revelations.

The one piece that I kept from version one of my Ezio costume was this shoulder cape. Previously it was attached by safety pins. This time I sewed on large snap buttons to the jacket.

I used a measuring tape from my neck to where I wanted it to end and then transferred that from to a poster board for a pattern. Then I transferred it to fabric and sewed it together.

thinking about how much i used to love cosplay and how i have barely done any of it ever since one specific contest in 2019.

it was at a decently sized convention, and i entered my assassin's creed ezio cosplay. this thing took me like 60+ hours and over $200 to do, which i recognize that many cosplays have more than that but it was my most extensive one ive ever done.

i adapted the pattern from some guy on youtube who had made an approximate one for the tunic, inside and out, and i changed it to fit my measurements and vision and it was double sided and layered and had the stripes manually inserted (not sewn on the outside!) into the tunic. i spent an unreasonable amount of time adapting of pair of my own boots with cardboard and faux leather to make them taller and more accurate, which looked really fucking good at the end and gave me a ton of hot glue burns. i sized and printed a diagram of the shoulder guard and meticulously wrapped each segmented piece in faux leather and aged it with various paints and actual damage, i modified a belt to attach it to the cape and around my shoulder, i bought two of the assassin blades, painted them both over again, made an entirely new hook for one of them fitted to my wrist, and practically remade the brace for the other one. i found leather gloves and cut one up and resewed it together so the cuff was accurate AND the blade could come through. i so carefully put the hood together with multiple failures to make sure it sat right like the weird triangle shape it is instead of being a circle. have you SEEN the patterns on ezio's collar??? i didn't scrimp on them, i hunted and hunted for ribbons and iron-on designs (because i can't embroider like that) and so carefully lined them up and spliced them together and made sure to have the border and the insides. i 3d printed the belt buckle and modified two more belts to cinch it around me, and i manually sanded primed painted and gilded the buckle. i put my life into this cosplay.

and i lost

to a sanders' sides cosplayer in jeans and a dress shirt.

also!! i got the shoes for the bella cosplay and i’m still a little self conscious about doing the cosplay but kinda excited too. they’re just simple black stilettos but they’re super cute and i’ll for sure do a finalized makeup test once i get the tights and some makeup.

I love finding old videos on YT of cosplayers from 15 years ago and seeing that nothing has changed besides camera quality. It's amazing but it also makes me a bit sad to see a lot of these channels are abandoned now- dancing Sephiroth hasn't uploaded in 13 years, I hope he's okay

NOW! For the main event! The armor! First you will need to draw out and pattern your pieces.

Pin your pattern pieces to your doublet and make any adjustments.

Cut out your armor from the thicker veg tan leather (7-9 oz)

After beveling the edges and poking and punching any holes needed, each piece was placed in a bath of water with a bit of vinegar and dish soap. Soaked until nice and soft and floppy.

Stitch your pauldrons together while moist then form as they should be.

Form your armor while damp and moist.

Now dye your pieces. You may need a couple coats. Punch riveting holes.

After dying, I lightly brushed Alumilite silver powder over the black and then wiped it off to give it that metallic shine followed by dusting the edges with a gold powder.

Don't forget to burnish your edges. This is a finishing touch that will round your edges and take out the roughness and tool marks. Instead of wax, I used a burnishing gum called Tokonole https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017X8GL9A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I finished the leather with Resolene to give it a nice shine. But wait! We're not done!

We need to harden the leather!

To harden my pieces I did a few coats of UV resin. Hitting each coat with the UV light.

The top parts of the pauldrons you are going to cover in the same fabric as your doublet with the trim/bias also. The triangles cut out with a heat tool to seal the edges.

Rivet your armor together and you are now complete!

He thought Altaïr would be fine. He seemed to have a grasp on the situation and looked like he was taking everything in better than Ezio and Ratonhnhaké:ton.

“The Apple has shown me visions of this future. I’ll be fine, Desmond. Just give me a phone with this internet thing in it.”

Oh god.

Desmond should have not trusted his words.

He should have anticipated something like this.

That Altaïr would get lost in the crowd of this…

Desmond needed to find Altaïr before he gets suckered into Vtubers or one of those toxic fandoms (he seriously didn’t want to see Altaïr having an oshi or going to Twitter to fight some rando because they had differing headcanons) or worse…

Desmond did not exactly have any memories of Altaïr’s love life (thank god for that small mercies) but he knew that Altaïr was a curious little shit and would definitely research hentai and kinks and-

Desmond needed to find Altaïr for both his sanity and the purity of the Brotherhood’s image of the great Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

“And the winner of this year’s Cosplay Competition is… Altair from Abstergo’s video game franchise: History’s Hit Men: Murder in the Levant!”

Desmond froze.

“It’s Altaïr.”

Fuck.

Desmond tried to get to the stage as the MC laughed before asking, “Okay, Altaïr, how about a few words to share to everyone? Why did you choose to cosplay this character and did you learn to parkour because of him or did you cosplay him because you do parkour?”

“I was trained by-”

“-by our awesome parkour trainer!” Desmond shouted as he jumped onto the stage, placing himself between Altaïr and the MC. He gave the MC a charming smile that caused the MC’s cheeks to reddened and a few of the people in front of the stage to cheer.

“Oooohhh a modern take of the Assassins?” The MC flawlessly asked as Desmond kept a tight grip on Altaïr’s shoulder to stop the man from running away.

“Yup! We’re sorta a duo.” Desmond said, trying to bullshit his way out of this while Altaïr remained quiet.

Desmond wanted to believe it was because he knew he fucked up.

But no.

Most probably, he was quiet because he wanted to see how Desmond would get them out of this.

Asshole.

“He’s cosplaying Altaïr as the game showed and I’m cosplaying Altaïr if he was an Assassin of our time.” Desmond said.

“Oooohhh, that sounds nice.”

“He would totally wear leather pants!” Someone in the audience shouted.

No. He definitely would not. That shit was too tight. It would be hard to freerun… parkour… wearing them.

“On behalf of my partner, we are grateful that he won and we’d like to go now because, I’m gonna be honest with you, we haven’t eaten yet.”

That got a few chuckles from the crowd.

“Alright, give it up for Altair and uuhhh… Modern Day Altair!”

The audience clapped while Desmond walked Altaïr off the stage by pushing him.

“Dad’s going to kill me.” Desmond hissed.

“I will talk to him.”

Desmond rolled his eyes as he said, “That won’t do anything. He’ll just kill me after talking to you.”

“I’ll make sure he won’t.” Altaïr promised.

The saddest part of this entire thing is that Desmond actually believed Altaïr could do it.

“By the way, Desmond. Can I borrow a bit of money. I would like to buy fanmerchs of my oshi.”

“I left you alone for an hour, Altaïr!”

Ezio Auditore Pauldron Part 1

Starting with reference photos, I created a paper pattern and traced and cut it out of 5mm EVA foam for the base structure and foam clay for the details, similar to the bracers.

For the base structure it took a few sheets of 5mm foam and I also cut a foam disc to create the raised circular detail. Having learned from the bracers, I first shaped the pauldron before adding the foam clay details. I rolled many snakes of foam clay and using water attached it to the base structure. After heat sealing the foam, I used Kwik Seal to smooth over any gaps, using water to make it smooth. Then I used 3 layers of Flexbond for sealant.
