Welcome to YA Scavenger Hunt!

This bi-annual event was first organized by author Colleen Houck as a way to give readers a chance to gain access to exclusive bonus material from their favorite authors...and a chance to win some awesome prizes! On this hunt, you not only get access to exclusive content from each author, you also get a clue for the hunt. EXCLUSIVE AUTHOR CONTENT:

The town in my novel, When Darkness Falls, is rife with mystery.  Misery Bay is a small community, and like most, it’s tight knit and people love to gossip. When Ezra, a stranger, comes to town, seventeen-year-old Austen is determined to figure out why he’s here.

Unbeknownst to Austen, Ezra has arrived in town to search for his brother, Nate, who disappeared ten years ago. He believes the key to his brother’s disappearance is on a piece of land protected by an eccentric lighthouse keeper and a high-powered electric fence. In this scene, he decides to break into the property. However, he has no idea that he’s being followed.

EXCERPT from When Darkness Falls:

I drop my backpack next to the fence. It rises high above my head into the clear night sky, and is topped with razor sharp wire, angled outward. That’s not going to stop me. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Or, in this case, short out an electric fence.

There’s a crackling noise behind me and my muscles tense. When I don’t hear it again, I force myself t relax. It’s probably a squirrel or a rabbit. Austen said there was something out here, but I can’t let that stop me. There’s always something out there trying to kill you, and if I waited until it was safe, I’d never have come here. Misery Bay is cursed, after all.

The crickets start their serenade and an owl hoots from a nearby tree. Using the moonlight as my guide, I grab a pair of thick gloves, a small shovel, a metal stake, a roll of copper wire, and a bottle of water from my backpack.

Step one: put on the leather gloves. I’m trying to short out a fence, not end up extra-crispy.

Step two: twist the wires around the top of the stake. It’ll be easier if I can hold it up to the light so I do that before I ground it. Two wires, each ending in a clamp. There. Hopefully, that’ll hold. If not, then I guess I’ll find out pretty quickly.

Step three: ground the metal stake. Using the hand shovel, I dig a few inches into the hard-packed black dirt and plant the stake. Did the You-tube video show the guy digging it deeper? I don’t remember. This better be deep enough, I’m not sure how much farther I can go.

Step four: pour the water around the spike to help dissipate the electricity once it’s grounded. I uncap the plastic bottle and pour the whole thing around the spike. I can’t remember if the guy on the video used the whole bottle, but it’s better to be an over-achiever in this case, I guess.

Step five: attach the clamps. I take a deep breath, and hold each of the clamps in my hands. I have to attach each one at exactly the same time, or I’ll be the recipient of all that electricity, and not the metal stake in the ground.

Okay, take a deep breath. One… Two… Three… I clamp the cables onto the fence.

The force of the blast throws me to the ground and my breath whooshes out of my lungs. Someone shrieks. Me? My hands burn. Damn, that hurt. But then excitement and adrenaline rushes through me. Did it work? God, I hope so. That would be so awesome if it did. It worked on YouTube, but I never really thought I’d get to do it. I brush the hood on my sweatshirt back to survey my handiwork.

Wait. There’s that rustling noise again. I spin around, heart pounding from more than the zap of electricity. “Who’s there?”

No answer. Come on. I know I wasn’t imagining things.

“I know you’re out there.” I pull a knife from my pocket and flip it open. The wicked silver blade gleams in the moonlight. “Put your hands above your head and come out. Slowly.”

I wave the knife in front of me, slowly, as a slim shadow separates from the rest and steps forward into a shaft of moonlight. Red hair. Red hair and an impertinent grin. Austen? “What in the hell are you doing here?”

About the Tea

The Duluria tea is named after the ship name for my two main characters, Dov and Auluria. I designed it with the help of my author friend, Lyssa Chiavari, and the amazing tea designer, Jamah, who created it for me. It is a delicate, summery blend reminiscent of Auluria and Dov’s time near the pond in the woods. Readers will know just how important the scenes at the pond are to the story and specifically to what happens with Auluria and Dov.

There are a few times in Golden when Auluria and Dov have these quiet moments when it’s just the two of them and things don’t seem as bad. These moments are few and far between, but these are the moments I imagine the two of them would love to sit down and have a cup of tea together and just talk, and personally I would love to join them. I’ve always been a fan of tea parties, so sitting down with my characters or some friends and just have a nice quiet time to talk and be with each other would be such a nice treat.
