Walk with me: Visit to a high-elevation red spruce forest. The red spruce (Picea rubens) forest on top of Red Spruce Knob, the ninth highest peak in West Virginia, provides a bittersweet glimpse back in time to the primeval beauty and solitude of such places prior to the arrival of the logging companies in the mid-Nineteenth to early Twentieth centuries. The loggers stripped the mountains bare and set in motion the massive wildfires that burned away everything, including the soil itself, down to solid bedrock. Almost a century later, the forest is regenerating and in some places, such as Red Spruce Knob, has regained the richness and vitality of a healthy boreal ecosystem.
From top: a view of Red Spruce Knob, in the far distance, from the Highland Scenic Highway overlook; Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), a ubiquitous understory component of the forest, along with mountain woodsorrel, yellow clintonia (a.k.a. blue-bead lily), hobblebush viburnum, Indian cucumber, green false hellebore, and various mosses and ferns; yellow clintonia (Clintonia borealis) in bloom; pink lady's slipper (Cypripedium acaule); green false hellebore (Veratrum viride) on eastern hay-scented fern (Dennstaedtia punctilobula); and mountain woodsorrel (Oxalis montana).

1740 words - gen
2/?
snily friendship, nightmares, severus loving potions class, angst
cw: self loathing
ao3 link if you'd prefer ♡
One, two, three, four - four ounces of Moondew, the herbal green fluid joining its brethren of finely pulverized Unicorn Horn, Syrup of Hellebore, and Stewed Mandrake. The greenish blue substance simmers in the cauldron. Severus couldn't be more focused if he tried, his careful hand stirs its contents while slowly adding in 12 ounces of Honeywater. It beginning to shift to a much warmer shade of amber. The sweat beads by his brow and the steam emanating makes his skin feel false, like wax paper, disgusting.
There are an abysmal amount of ways to screw up an elixir, and he'll be damned if any of the infinite creep up on him today.
When he woke up this morning he'd been excited-an immensely rare sight for the student-to work on his potion of anti-paralysis. Something about it all intrigued him, and he knew he'd wanna pocket some bottles for safe keeping.
Professor Slughorn had begun giving him heads up on what his class had in store, often lending extra books and indulging in the boy's curiosity.
"You could be a great Potions master one day you know." And Severus had known, being one of the only people to carry around tiny bottles of his own creation was somewhat of an ego booster. All the more fun in Herbology and all the more easy to take care of himself.
Maybe just 4 this time.
Other students in the room seem bored, not meeting much a reason to be brewing such a potion in the first place. It must be nice to walk in for the grade alone; Severus finishes pouring his honey-like antidote and runs his fingers through his hair. Everything always feels so sticky around cauldrons, his wrists hurt.
"Okay everyone, clean up for today." Slughorn's voice flits past Severus' ears, crackly and friendly as ever. "Keep this recipe in your repertoire.. Never know when Petrificus Totalus may sneak up on you."
What an understatement. Severus wouldn't be leaving Slytherin Dungeon on Sunday unless absolutely necessary, He wrings his hands and envisions a peaceful evening ahead of him, Saturdays bringing a sense of calm. It's just a trek back to his room and he can finally fall to his pillow and take a nap.
"Hey Sev." Lily's velvet voice acts as an invisible wall he walks into. Her eyes meet his as he takes a second to really catch up in his mind, and Lily's hands fall on his shoulders like knocking over old books. She just barely exceeds him in height, her freckles highlighted by the scattered warmth in her cheeks. "You look exhausted! Did you sleep at all?"
"I slept." He answers, voice croaking like he hadn't been awake the past hour. "Not enough though. I've been planning a long nap all day."
The arms of a warm floral cinnamon hold him tight and it's oh–so familiar. Everytime Lily hugs him, Severus doesn't quite know what to do. Does he hold her back? Would it be embarrassing for her if his hands grazed her hair and does she ever stop to think that it may ruin her reputation to be seen with whatever he is—so close to her lungs and– Why can't he just live in the moment? She always sees right through him in a way that no one else does. Perhaps it's because they've known each other for so long.. Perhaps he's just not the best at hiding his shadow. It's so easy to know a terrible person when Heaven on Earth stands directly next to you.
"I've been having some nightmares. Not too many, but some." His shoulders stay tense. There's never enough time with her, even if he were capable of simply standing here with more confidence he'd still have that voice in the back of his head screaming into the canal that connects his ear and up to his eyes and through every vein that reaches his brain. Spilling acid of it's disgusting to be seen and you ruin everything you touch. It's a shame really, his work in class shows otherwise. Good wizard, bad person. Nothing can change that.
She squeezes him ever so slightly, her fingers going to pet his hair before she brings him back to an arms length apart. There's a face of worry; he hates when she looks at him like that.
"I'm sorry." It's not fair, sleeping is supposed to be a time to rest. The one time when nothing else matters except just laying there unmoving, and trying not to go crazy when the loneliness veers its ugly claws. "Mind if i ask what about?"
Severus shakes his head. It's not like he has to hide this sort of stuff from her.
"It's just mum. She's much busier now, I never know when I'll see her. If it's for one month or one minute." Chest rising and falling, he doesn't expect to feel his throat tighten. He only cries when he's tired. "Sorry I need to go."
"Naptime?"
Please take care of yourself.
He nods and whispers a quiet "see you later" before quickly finding his way around the Hogwarts corridors. It always feels empty when he runs away from her, and whenever she says goodbye. He's always hoping for something better to come up, but he knows it's not logical to think that way. To wish and wish for anything to become perfect, for his life to grow into something he's not and will never be, for things to be different.
Reaching the common room, Severus doesn't say a word to anyone. He heads straight past leather sofas and flickering lamps, through the diamond-shaped door. He lands in the carpet of his room and the way his body hits his mattress feels like a rolling pin grading on his bones 10 times over. He'd exerted himself today, and it hadn't even been a full day's worth of classes.
Counting to 112, his hands grip the 2 layers of blanket he's buried himself in and the world around fades to a depressing gray, warm but far from inviting. Sometimes he wishes for a cat to accompany him with soft paws and a gentle purr.
Other times he just wants to stay asleep 'til Christmas comes.
______
Waves and waves of saltwater fight to pull him under, stinging his eyes and blocking his breath but he can't let them win. It's not a choice, but a responsibility, his long sleeves make it exceedingly hard to move and when he reaches this small puppy in front of him he's counting to 100 hoping they'll reach the shoreline before his lungs and limbs give out. She's shaking, and all he can do is wonder where his mother is.
Eileen had been in the water too, the fury of nature's pool hoisting uncertainty in every direction. Severus looks around, running past several people he can't recognize and it's starting to frighten him. Where'd she go? Is the beating heart he's carrying in his arms meant to be here? It's all a haze, a dreary haze.
They're all suddenly together, Severus ripping the paper wrapper off his straw and their waitress brings in a rack of many books. Eileen doesn't seem to even see Severus, she chatters and laughs but doesn't quite look at him, his brain hammers and drills and he just wants her to say 'I've missed you.'
You don't want to be here do you?
It hurts, hurts more than the water pulling him under and the times he's fallen down the stairs when wanting to skip out on Church and she still won't look at him. It's only when they're in his room and he runs into her arms that her voice is aimed directly at him, the small form she can barely hold on to.
"Why do you wish to be around me when I've been so wrong?"
Severus can't stop crying.
"I miss you. It doesn't matter what you've done, I still miss you."
This hug feels like he's fallen into their burning fireplace in the dead of Winter. He knows she's slipping away. She's always slipping away.
"I can't.."
His head pounds. The feeling of chills play through his shoulders and up his neck, it's a wonder that he's still submerged in fabric of green and silver. He can feel his eyes straining with remnants of salt when he opens them and it's only a little shocking when a rough palm collides with his forehead.
"You haven't got a fever, at least I don't think.."
Regulus has no sense of personal space.
"I'm not sick," Severus responds in such a way, he doesn't know if it's even audible. "Head.. hurts."
As if he were struck by lightning Regulus flings his entire arm back to then hang by his waist, presumably what he'd be doing if he hadn't gone to check Sev's temp status. His place next to his roommate's bed is awkward, and Severus is too wracked with leftover pain and confusion to care.
"Is it 7 already?"
"Nuh uh. Still 5:30." Regulus checks his wrist as if he remembered to bring his watch to school this term.
"More sleep."
And then Severus is out again, the tension in his forehead fading once he's breathing steadily and Regulus can't help but stare for longer than any normal person would. Disgust rises in himself because he doesn't feel like he should bear witness - he sighs out with thoughts racing. It'd be so easy to tease him for everything, but easy isn't what he's about. It's not like he's out to start wars. Only out to finish them.
Everburning candles lead the way out of the room in their spot on the small coffee table, almost like a glowing sign pointing him out. No one else is in here, though that shouldn't surprise him. Leave it to Severus to be the only Slytherin avoiding everyone else like the plague.
Once he can't justify standing around any longer, Regulus picks up a small book from under his bed and snakes his way back out from whence he came. A grimace forms on his face when the door has the audacity to screech and his head whips back to make sure it hadn't been a disturbance. Pangs of empathy, it's not something he knows yet. But maybe one day it'll make sense. And maybe someday it won't feel weird, weird that he stared with not much reason.
He's gotta write this all down.

Ruby animal wandering willows
Tumblr media
It can be easily identified by its straight spike of white-pink flowers and kidney-shaped leaves covered in a waxy layer-no other plant in the park has this combination of characteristics. Grizzly bears love to frequent these shrub-covered landscapes for bearflowers, also known as Richardson’s brookfoam ( Boykinia richardsonii). Leatherleaf is commonly found here, and the white-crowned sparrow can be seen foraging for insects and seeds on the ground and from branches of the shrubs. Settled between the alpine zone and boreal forests, shrubs are around 20 to 150 cm tall. This indicates that soils also have more moisture in this landcover type. Tussocks are areas of raised solid ground in bogs that are held together by root systems, and are common here. The last type of low shrub landcover is mixed with sedges. Upland sandpipers and moose will also make appearances as they scavenge for berries and food. Dwarf birch is the most common plant here, along with crowberries and labrador tea, which are pictured in the quilt. Blueberry patches can be scattered among the shrubs.Īnother low shrub landcover is mixed with ericaceous willow and sits below the alpine zone and above the boreal forest, most commonly on slopes of foothills and broad valleys. This landscape is almost completely covered in shrubs, most of which American dwarf birch. They are also known for having different song “dialects” based on where they are from. Though it spends its summer in northern habitats such as Alaska, these sparrows migrate south for the winter. The white-crowned sparrow is well-known for whistling and buzzing through the low vegetation. Grasses and sedges such as cow parsnip and bluejoint grass can also be found here. This landcover type is most frequently found around mid-elevation alluvial stream deposits and near small streams, making dispersal of seeds easy. Willows are insect- (often bumblebee-) pollinated and produce a large amount of seeds which are dispersed by wind and water. Six species of willows dominate the overstory of willow landscapes, including the Alaska willow. Green false hellebore and devil’s club are two other plants that can be found in the understory here. This allows alders to grow in less fertile habitats because they are able to take up more nutrients from the soil. The alder plant forms a team with bacteria in the soil-called a symbiotic relationship-in order to take nitrogen from the ground instead of the air. In fact, over ¾ of the plants found in this landcover type are alder species! This genus ( Alnus spp.) is special because it has the ability to fixate nitrogen. Steep rocky slopes made up of glacial sediment can be found throughout the park, creating prime habitat for various species of alder shrubs. Lady slipper orchids and dwarf dogwoods can be found scattered throughout the understory. Black spruce trees Found at lower elevations north of the Alaska Range, soils are cold and poorly drained with abundant permafrost. It was also historically used to treat ailments such as asthma, diarrhea, pneumonia, sore throats, and headaches, depending on the region of the country. Bog Labrador tea leaves were even used by Native Americans across the country. Plants like bog blueberry and labrador tea dominate this landscape, filling the air with fragrances. Alluvial fans-or cone-shaped deposits of gravel-and outwash-floodplains created by rivers offer excellent conditions for this landcover type.Ī stroll through the stunted spruce forest is certainly a feast for the nose. Red-backed voles and lynx can also be found wandering through the black spruce, labrador tea, and alders. Flashes of red feathers through the air offer clues of ruby-crowned kinglets and white winged crossbills, collecting insects and conifer seeds, respectively, in this more open forest. Frequently fires sweep across this landscape, but fire can help release seeds from black spruces’ semi-serotinous cones. In contrast to the dense spruce, trees in open spruce forests usually only grow around 7.5 meters tall. In the spring, male black-capped chickadees bring food back to the female and young and on the south side of the Alaska Range black bears roam the forests with their cubs. White and black spruce dig plant their roots into the sandy soil and dominate the densely-forested landscape, where the trees can be over 20 meters tall! Tamaracks and shrubs such as alders and willows grow wherever sunlight comes through.

While that’s just horrible, you, you…
*pulls out wildflower identification booklet*
You tansy ragwort. You nodding onion! You absolute tufted vetch! You’re just a no-good pinesap, a terrible blue stickseed! I bet your own family hates you, you good-for-nothing gumweed! You hear that? You’re just a common snowberry! I never should have spoken to you, the one-sided wintergreen you are! You hedge-nettle, the absolute nerve of you!
You long-bracted frog orchid, you spotted coralroot, you mountain ladysipper, you twayblade, you sulphur buckwheat, you tufted loosestrife, you upland larkspur, you shrubby cinquefoil, the worst baneberry of them all! You haunt my dreams with your hawthorn ways, you partridge foot! Don’t be a bitter cherry. Stop being a bald hip rose. Your red-stemmed saxifrage, chickweed monkey-flower, great mullein behind needs to be kicked right out of here! You’re such a showy milkweed, bunchberry! I never want to see your green false hellebore face ever again! So leave me alone, you trumpet honeysuckle!

* hc : the colorful flowers of the schnee gardens. this is an extensive look at what flowers grow in the schnee gardens &. what they mean. weiss’ mother , eilwen loves to garden. eilwen is reminded of the times when her father use to talk of her mother , gwendolen planting the most beautiful blooms. however , atlas’ long &. ardous winters a lot of common flowers won’t bloom in the country’s conditions. these are a list of some colorful winter blooms that are located throughout the estate:
Tumblr media
first we begin with the foliage outside on the grounds. this bloom is beautiful in its yellow &. grows outside of the gardens in the forested estate surrounding the manor. why ? they are extremely poisonous !! they keep rabbits &. deer away from the houses. they spread like wild fire after eilwen planted them one day after a fight with jacques. they represent ‘ hatred. ‘
Tumblr media
hellebores , the winter rose ( that isn’t actually a rose ) that blooms in a variety of colors. their colors range from cream to red to deep purples that almost look black. they are a tall flower &. they face downward so they are planted towards the center of the displays &. framed by other shorter flowers. the meaning of the hellebore is interesting in that the actual word broken down: helle - ‘ injure ‘ , bora - ‘ food. ‘ used as a  they mean ‘ protection from scandal &. calmuny. ‘
Tumblr media
although they are cabbage &. not flowers , they are included because of their vivid colored rosettes. ornamental cabbage borders the garden walkways , creating a bold splash of color with their blues , purples , whites &. greens. originally they were planted as a filler until other flowers could be ordered but eilwen adored the individuality they presented. so she kept them.
Tumblr media
camellias are known for being queens of the winter. the schnee camellias are bred for cold hardiness &. bloom in bright pinks on their evergreen shrubs. they grow along the brick walls of the manor since they enjoy shade. they were planted after the death of nicholas schnee since pink camellias mean ‘ a longing for someone. ‘
Tumblr media
this flower can grow in freezing temperatures &. is hardy. it has a unique structure of five petals facing upward. it can symbolize ‘ happiness’ but can also represent ‘ death ‘ &. ‘ all good things come to an end ‘ because they are also a poisonous bloom. the double meaning can represent the false happiness of eilwen’s &. jacque’s marriage.

Day Date at Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, Part 1. Most couples would probably equate a "date" to a nice dinner out and a Marvel adventure movie, but Blake and I, being hopeless nature fanatics and aspiring satyrs without hooves, equate it to mean "putzing around in the mountains". The timing was perfect: the haze from the Canadian wildfires, which has been choking most the US Mid-Atlantic and Northeast for the past week, had mostly moved on, replaced by a crisp blue sky with a light breeze.
From top: the view from the Rich Mountain Overlook on Old Route 33, heading toward Harman; Blake communing with the mystic creek chubs in Gandy Creek, one of the best brook trout streams in the Mid-Atlantic region; cow parsnip (Heracleum maximum), a mildly phototoxic beauty that Native Americans relied on for food and medicine; a forest composition of false green hellebore (Veratrum viride), ferns, wild geranium (Geranium maculatum), and golden Alexander (Zizia aurea); a close-up of golden Alexander, a lovely, spring-blooming member of the carrot family; the wetlands complex at Spruce Knob Lake; shining ladies' tresses (Spiranthes lucida), a spring to early summer-blooming bog orchid recognizable from its bright yellow labellum; bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), which can be easily mistaken for a spring-blooming forb but is actually a dwarf dogwood; and a feisty eastern garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis), whose saliva contains a mild neurotoxin that is deadly to its prey but harmless to humans.

Adonis vernalis
Adonis vernalis, known variously as pheasant's eye, spring pheasant's eye, yellow pheasant's eye and false hellebore, is a perennial flowering plant in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae It is found in dry meadows and steppes in Eurasia. Isolated populations are found from Spain in the west across Central Europe with fine examples in Valais, Switzerland, and southern Europe, reaching southern Sweden in the north and Abruzzo in the south, with its main area of distribution being the Pannonian Basin and the West Siberian Plain. In contrast to most other European Adonis species, the flowers appear in springtime, and are up to 80 mm in diameter, with up to 20 bright yellow petals. The plant is poisonous, containing cardiostimulant compounds, such as adonidin and aconitic acid. In addition, it is often used as an ornamental plant. (Green false hellebore, sometimes also called simply "false hellebore," is Veratrum viride, a member of the lily family.) Diagram of Adonis vernalis More details Android, Windows

One of the many beaver-engineered wetlands complexes in Canaan Valley. The dam, now over-grown with sedges and cattails, is as impressive a feat of engineering for rodents as the Hoover Dam is for human beings. More to the point, beavers are the key drivers to the ecological well-being of Canaan Valley’s extensive wetlands, and for the most part, staff at the National Wildlife Refuge and Canaan Valley State Park let them do their thing - to the point of occasionally letting them flood boardwalks and trails.
From top: spring cress (Cardamine bulbosa), a wetlands-loving relative of the toothworts, which is similarly edible; false green hellebore (Veratrum viride), a potentially-deadly mountain beauty, whose alkaloid-laden leaves and roots can cause cardiac arrest if ingested in sufficient amounts; dotted hawthorn (Crataegus punctata), an important food and shelter tree for wildlife in the valley; woodland strawberry (Fragaria vesca L.), distinguished from the similar wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana) by sepals that point backwards and seeds on the surface of the fruit; and Robin’s plantain (Erigeron pulchellus), the most impressive and beautiful of the spring fleabanes in Central Appalachia.
