There was this recurrent dream the First Enchanter was having for months on end.

In this dream Meredith comes to him to explain that this – all of this, the Circle, everything – is obviously not working; and while the Chantry tries to come up with a new solution they all get to go home. To leave. Everyone.

He accepts that as perfectly logical just like everyone else, the way one does in dreams.

Then the scene shifts and suddenly he is in the great hall. His people come to him one by one to say their goodbyes. He offers a handshake or a hug depending on the situation, and they all tell him about their plans for the future. Some of those plans are ridiculous, the kind of plans young people come up with when they suddenly find the whole world opening to them – but either way he smiles softly and wishes them good luck. Meredith comes to him last; without anyone to guard, the templars decide to leave as well.

Eventually he is the only one left.

He wanders the deserted hallways all by himself. He touches every wall, every table, every book. So many memories.

In the end he returns to his office. He sits down in front of his desk and waits.

And waits.

When Orsino had been first appointed as the Gallows’ First Enchanter, he used to laugh suggestions as the one Kly made off. He was too young and how else would he take them as except jokes? As years passed he’d be irred at the mere idea. Now, however, that irritation had started wearing off, leaving behind mere bitterness and a would-be wistfulness, if he didn’t know any better. He had abandoned his own innocence years ago, since Maud locked herself in that closet and set herself on fire; since he was leashed and thrown at the Gallows’ dungeons for the first time and his somniari curse awoke. He knew it in his bones, he recent developments that had mages cornered more and more every passing day were just the confirmation. He would never leave the Gallows alive.

“If you had your way, eh?” he finally sighs with resignation. “And what would we do? Tell her that this is no life? Murder her in cold blood to make a political statement? It’s no use. The former would just inform her of something she already knows but cares not to rectify, the latter would have all Andrastians -even those who support us for the time being- hell bent upon snuffing us out like a candle. As if they need an excuse at this point. In another lifetime, perhaps... maybe I would agree with you, but now... There are too many lives in my hands. Too many innocents that will be slaughtered; women, children. Even if we were to be freed there would be no future for us unless the rest of the world accepted us for what we are. Or unless we find a piece of land to call our own and lead our lives with our own rules. Whatever comes first.” 

The Templar guard Kly had brought with her was staring into nothing with that dumbfounded expression and empty gaze he had seen way too often for a lifetime. The hoard of Tranquil setting their wares every morning at the courtyard was growing larger each passing day, and it was sickening him. He had to fight Meredith tooth and nail everyday not to sign the customary petition presented to him, but it was no use; the Knight Commander had her way and pried that signature off him anyway. Each time he told himself it was the lesser of two evils, given the alternative in each case, but now he barely believed that excuse himself. There was so much one’s conscience could take; he hadn’t slept in days.

“I am not handing a Templar any compromising documents, spellbound or not.” he drawled, rubbing his forehead tiredly. “The Knight Commander has even her own people spied upon and if she gets ahold of the list with the names both of our heads will promptly be the new fancy decoration of the Gallows walls. But I do have a better, falseproof alternative to suggest, if you are not squeamish, that is.”

“Give me a heads up if you start to feel murderous.”

“If I had a copper for every time i’ve felt murderous but refrained from acting on the impulse I would be a rich man.” Orsino chuckled amused, as he regarded his visitor. It takes one to know one they say, and it did not take much effort for the First Enchanter to acknowledge that she was too a practitioner of the forbidden arts. Maker, if Meredith ever suspected that he had been arranging meetings with blood mages and slipped information and funds to the Mage Underground she would skin him alive at Hightown square.

“Also, Kirkwall would be a better place if I ever got tired of keeping the high moral ground and started biting people, but who am I kidding, that would just give Meredith an excuse to say that this damn elf has finally gone rabid and has to be put down.” he added with a rueful sigh. “I thank you for your tempting offer, but unfortunately I will have to decline for your own safety. Believe me, the last thing you need is to be involved in my fights.”
