Belated Instructions
Dungeon Meshi this week had me remembering my love of characters finding out late or never what's happening to them. The fatal one is at the end, for those who are uncomfortable with temporary D&D style character death.
"This tastes a little odd."
"Huh. Let me have it. Sit down, will you?"
"Sure. Why?"
"So you don't hit your head when the drug kicks in."
"What are you... Taaaaa..."
"There you go."
"My stomach hurts."
"Which bottle did you take?"
"The blue one."
"Shit. Quick, put your hair back and face that way. I'll help you."
"What, why? BLAAARGH."
"...Because you're going to throw up."
"How did I - where am I?"
"You're in a medical facility. Here, take a deep breath of this."
"Okay. What's... next..."
"Now you can go to sleep."
"Wait. Wait... Ssssfffhh..."
"Okay, they're under. Start the procedure."
"The sending has begun, go ahead."
"I killed that lich, but there's a - there's a spell that hit me. It hurts like Hell. I can't feel my toes."
"What color was it?"
"Black."
"This is very important. I need you to find a landmark down there, can you do that? Something easy to find."
"Hnn - getting harder to walk. How about this statue?"
"Describe it, quickly."
"Looks like a centaur with an elf on his back."
"That'll do. Get behind it and lie down. Hurry."
"Right. Gods, this hurts. I can't feel my - arms either -"
"I know. I know. But I'm going to come get you, all right? Now in a second everything's going to get gray and then the pain will stop. Don't be afraid. Don't worry. I'm coming."
"Oh. Good. It doesn't. It doesn't hurt any more..."
"Can you hear me - ? No, the sending's over. Listen, listen! They're dead. We have about ten hours to get to the body before our resurrection window closes and we can spend NO power on the way. Get moving!"

I can never take “Bad Kids lifespan difference angst” seriously because you can’t look at the state of the afterlife in that setting as well as the way multiple Bad Kids and their families have interacted with it and convince me that they’re not just going to find new inventive ways to continue wet t-shirting each other across the various planes they end up in.

Consider: depressed necromancers forced to go on mental health walks by their creations
"Get up, go outside."
It was like being ordered around by a chill running down his spine. He gave a blind, swatting wave into the space around him. "Piss off."
"Ha! You sure must be regretting studying resurrections instead of banishments, hm?" the ghostly voice echoed at the edge of his hearing. "I have aaall the time in the world."
It was absolutely killing him that turning off his hearing aids didn't work against ghosts. He opened his eyes, staring blankly up at the by now familiar shape floating above him. The look in the spectral eyes was infuriatingly soft.
"Come on. One little walk. And I won't give you any grief about your meal choices tonight."
"It's still light out," he gritted, too tired to even raise his voice. "And you can't make me."
The shining eyes narrowed. "Not yet I can't, but I'll learn. And I bet I'll be able to start chucking bottles of vitamin D at your head long before I'm strong enough to move your sorry ass."
"I did you a favour, you wanted this. And this is the thanks I get?"
Somehow the chill turned warm for a second while the ghost smiled with his whole face. "Yeah. I'm paying it forward."
He pulled the couch pillow over his head. "Go haunt somewhere else."
"Or, you could leave and go for a-"
"Fine, I'll go for a damn walk."
The ghostly laughter followed him all the way to the door and for a second it felt like the grey sludge gave way
He paused with his hand on the key in the lock. "...are you coming or what?"

i love kristen applebees so much because with most dnd pc's if you said they'd "killed a god" you would go "woah they're so powerful to be able to fight and win against a god!" on the other hand you have kristen who has managed to kill 1 to 3 gods (depending on if you're counting yes! and yes? as seperate and who knows what's going on with cassandra's "being alive" status) solely by being bad at time management and comitment issues. oh your character spent a whole campaign working with their party to build the strength to kill a god in combat? well she did it by literally just having adhd SHE'S TOO POWERFUL

a writeblr resurrection
my name is rhyannyn, and i'm looking to get more involved into the writeblr community after a lengthy hiatus of getting myself and my works in order. i'm always willing to follow new people, and reconnect with writeblrs i knew a few years ago when i was consistently on tumblr (going as kennedy :b)
if you write any of the following, are intrigued by any of the following, or just want to hang out and rip my OCs apart (i've got a list of where you should start, by the way) please feel free to follow and I will follow back. i'm really looking to find writeblrs right now who blogs are focused on writing, as i always love finding new things to read, and new stories to support :)
tragic characters--characters who see no way out, characters who are icarus coded and sisyphus coded AND antigone coded, characters caged by their duty and love and faith and it destroys them
in turn, complex characters with really rich backgrounds
stories influenced by slavic cultures (polish heritage plays a large part in one of my fantasy cultures)
queer fantasy stories by queer voices
FANTASY! CONTEMPORARY FANTASY! SCIFI FANTASY! DARK FANTASY! HIGH FANTASY! URBAN FANTASY! I WILL SCROUNGE THE FLOORS FOR FANTASY AND GORGE MYSELF ON IT!
stories that are anti-colonizer. i like seeing indigenous people win, and i love stories with irish, native american, sammi, and kurdish influences. i like seeing characters cling to who they are and old gods and kind ways while colonizers try to take it away, and i like seeing indigenous people prevail.
worldbuilding with a major focus on family values, religion, and magic.
any and all things dark
slowburn lovers, slowburn friendships, slowburn found family. make it teeth-gritting and loving and heart gouging. i will devour it.
characters who are hurt and traumatized and it isn't the end. characters in the dark who keep going even when there isn't any light in sight.
all things divine and demonic and grimy. i have a taste for violence as long as it serves a purpose to the story and isn't done just for fun
this is a list of things i write, and what i particularly love to read in literature, but i'm willing to follow any writeblrs and hopefully connect with some new and old accounts!
again, i've been off of tumblr for an official two years now (yes my bad, but alas i had the strangest hyperfixation on the job i despise and totally disappeared), but i am holding myself by the throat and forcing myself to resurrect because i am trying to publish a book right now!
oh and my wip page sucks. please avoid it at all costs while i try to edit it :3

i hope bucky's adventuring party mirrors all the good aspects of the bad kids. like not necessarily copying class for class like the rat grinders but the vibe is still there
i hope they're on their own adventure right now. solving a mystery and sneaking around and forming unbreakable bonds that will help them through the stress of high school.
I hope the bad kids run into bucky's adventuring party when their mysteries overlap and Bucky just begs Kristen not to tell their parents.

So we're all in agreement that Lucy Frostblade is Kristen's actual Ratgrinder parallel and not Buddy Dawn, right?

thoughts on thistle and yaad's dynamic that i vomited in the tags of another post but will now try to articulate here: they're not actually family, or at least they shouldn't be. not in a conventional sense anyway. framing them as uncle and nephew (even in a non-literal, silly fantasy world way) rides more on technicality than anything concrete.
what i mean by this is yaad calls thistle by name and says he and delgal were raised "like" brothers. he talks about thistle like he's an outsider imposing himself into the melinis' space, and it's clear that thistle was never legitimized as a member of the family. for thistle's part, though we don't know how he would treat yaad pre-demon brainrot, it's safe to assume based on the way he punishes him—turning him into a doll—and how little is shown in the way of any sort of relationship between them that thistle only cares* about yaad as an extension of delgal (otherwise i'd expect something like kabru and milsiril, because it's not like another complicated interspecies family dynamic would be out of place, yet there's next to nothing on them even in bonus content, just their scant interactions in the main story).
in essence, they're strangers to one another. thistle's desperation to preserve the illusion of a family, a model where he doesn't even fit, was the snare they were caught in for the past thousand years of stasis. yaad-as-nephew is a prop to uphold that illusion, and thistle is playing a role he's unfit to play. in the context of post-canon interactions, attempting to reconstruct that facade would only be a reenactment of trauma for them both (in a deeply compelling way i'd love to watch unfold, tbh), as that "uncle and nephew" framing places thistle in an implicit position of power over someone he's already traumatized through misuse of authority in the past, a role which also perpetuates his adultification and yaad's infantilization in turn. it'd mostly be an obstacle to any real connection.
best to burn the melini family bridge, i think, and if there's still anything salvageable left in the rubble, let something different supplant it.

Oh. Fuck. Uh-oh. I just realized what that final scream in the trailer for next week is. Remember a few episodes ago when Kristen said something to Buddy about hoping he gets to meet Helio one day? Well, guess who just died and met their god and found out that he fucking sucks? 🙃 Sorry Buddy.

On the one hand I’m very emotionally invested in the rat grinders and it makes me a little sad to see them get violently wrecked. But. On the other hand. If Ruben Hopclap was an NPC in my home game I can admit that I would have sent him to rock and roll hell too
