Unlike the apostles and the martyrs, most of us will spend a significant portion of our lives shopping, scrolling, reading books, watching movies and television, and listening to music. For this reason, taste isn’t a trivial matter that only affects a small, contained aspect of our lives. Taste isn’t merely a preference for the Stones over the Beatles or some one-off affinity for Jamaican cuisine, or Doris Day films, or Monet’s paintings. Rather, taste determines a good deal of what we do with our lives. This hasn’t always been the case.   If we lived on rural farms during the Middle Ages or worked sixteen-hour days in nineteenth century textile factories, taste would play a relatively small role in our lives. Medieval farmers didn’t have to decide whether to listen to Taylor Swift or Frederic Chopin while cooking dinner. They didn’t have to decide between Ordinary People and Transformers on Friday night. They didn’t have to choose between Grace Lutheran and Sponge.TV Faith Café on a Sunday morning. We do, though. These are daily, even hourly decisions modern men have to make. What is more, the modern world is arranged in such a way that a conscious, defiant act of the will is necessary to avoid spending one’s entire life reading, watching, and listening to banal trash. The average man does not so much form his own tastes as he accepts the tastes dictated by his age. He reads what he is told to read, which is why a very small number of books sell so many copies. He sees ten to twenty new movies every year, most of which are wildly popular. He doesn’t deeply enjoy these books, which is why he doesn’t return to them after the zeitgeist stops telling him to read them. Instead, he reads whatever the zeitgeist tells him to read next.

George Luz had Portugese-descended parents and nine siblings.

Darrell "Shifty" Powers had Indigenous heritage.

Eugene Roe was Cajun, as shown in the show, but his early life was most likely more interesting than we know. Historical records say Eugene was born in 1922 in Bayou Chene (translated from French as Oak Bayou), which was a small, unincorporated community located in the Atchafalaya Basin, which is the largest swamplands in the United States.

Bayou Chene was a community settled in the 1830s, located approximately 40 miles north of Morgan City, Louisiana. The U.S. post office was established there in 1858. The settlers there ran a church, a school, a merchandise store and the post office, which were all located on the bayou. In the 1920s it had approximately 500 residents, most of whom had lived there for generations after settling there from other communities both within and outside of Louisiana. They were swampers, lumberjacks, trappers, farmers, fishermen and moss pickers.

Despite occasional flooding, Bayou Chene thrived until the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 destroyed much of the community. This would have been when Eugene Roe was five years old.

The community rebuilt but declined after construction of the Atchafalaya Spillway levees and dredging of river channels caused repeated flooding of the community. While we know the Roes at one time relocated to Morgan City (Most likely due to the flooding), what used to be Bayou Chene now no longer exists, and now lies under 12 feet of silt. So when we talk about Eugene being bayou, the man was BAYOU.

Ronald Spiers was actually born in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Lewis Nixon's mother, Doris Ryer Nixon, was an American civic leader, particularly on the home front during World War II. She became a national vice-president of the American Women's Voluntary Services (AWVS) during the war. The AWVS was a key organization for coordinating volunteer activities in support of the war effort. She had founded the California chapter, and had served as its first president.

She was also the founder and president of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., and state commander of the California Cancer Society.

With hundreds of highly prized species, bird tourism is thriving in the country – and farmers are increasingly turning their land into nature reserves

“Wildlife tourism is far more profitable than farming but that’s not the only reason we made the change,” says Ajila’s son, Luis Jr. “We wanted to save not just the umbrellabird, but all the special creatures here, and safeguard them for future generations.”

Projects such as this are eligible for funding from the Ecuadorian government. Launched in 2008, the Socio Bosque scheme offers “the poorest private and communal forest landowners annual payments for each hectare of forest cover maintained”, with sums of between $30 (£23) and $60 a hectare.

But the income provided by birders alone has been enough to propel some farmers to take up the nature reserve model.A few years ago, Favián Luna decided to convert his 120-hectare tomato farm in the Tandayapa Valley, north-west of Quito, into a cloud-forest reserve and lodge called Alambi Reserve. Visitors go to photograph many species of hummingbirds, including the Andean emerald, native to the Chocó bioregion of the Ecuadorian Andes.

Nearby, at Mashpi Amagusa, former farmers Doris Villalbaand Sergio Basantes have created a reserve, lodge and garden, which attracts 260 species of sought-after birds. Highlights include glistening-green, flame-faced and beryl-spangled tanagers, and the rare, endemic rose-faced parrot.

At Finca La Victoriana in Pichincha, the owner Jacqui bought the house and land, and began to reforest the site while growing crops to feed herself. But during lockdown, when she was stuck in nearby Quito, all her crops were stolen. She was saved from having to sell up by a visiting friend, who heard an unusual sound from lower down the valley and realised this was one of South America’s most charismatic birds: the Andean cock-of-the-rock.

Since 2005, Ángel Paz and his younger brother Rodrigo have transformed their former dairy farm in Mindo into a bird reserve. - xavier gets really excited for your birthday, mostly because people always forget his until he met you.

- every year, it is an unspoken rule that your birthday date will be at the art gallery you two first met! (his is playing laser tag with you and ajax and ending it with lotr movie marathon but that's another post)

- you two like to act like posh british people with fancy accents running around pretending to be interested in buying a painting until he actually pulls up his credit card and buys you a $30,000 painting.

- you repay him by paying for your date lunch.

- he keeps telling the waiters "it's his birthday" "yeah we're celebrating his birthday :)" until it's so uncomfortably awkward and they have to give you a free slice of cake.

- after lunch, you two decided to hit up the farmer's market.

- neither of you are talented cooks, but he's been learning about how to cook a nice salmon and steak lately

- after gathering the ingredients needed, you head back to your place and attempt to make a nice grilled dory fish together.

- it's definitely your favourite bonding activity now, you never knew that cooking could be such an enjoyable thing to do!

- working together to prepare the meals, almost burning the sausages because you started making out halfway through, etc.

- you're also very surprised at how serious he takes the way you cut the vegetables, if it's too big or too small he starts grumbling and takeover the slicing.

- it's actually adorable how frustrated he gets over baby carrots.

- the dinner was successful without any burning pots and pans thankfully, and throughout the whole meal, his hands stayed lingering above yours.

- he decided he could sneak back into his dorm the next morning and risked getting detention to stay the night with you, your bed more than enough to hold the both of you together.
