Finished Fear The Walking Dead, and I'm sad to say I'm disappointed. Because WTF happened to Sarah and Wendell?!? You can't just have them disappear, and absolutely NO ONE say a damn thing about it! I'm secretly hoping, since the creator said TWD universe is only just beginning, and will be around for a long time, that they bring them back in a different show. They could run into Michonne and Rick or Maggie and Negan, something! I REFUSE to believe PADRE killed them on those rafts, everyone else made it. And as we know, if you don't see a body or a walker, they're never dead!

The Buffy Re-watch: S1E10 (part 1)
Nightmares
We are going to get spooky in here tonight.
We start this episode of people's worst fears with a premonition from Buffy going own to The Master's lair, which is really just foreshadowing for episode 12.
The mix of Buffy screaming in the dream and her mum trying to wake her up thinking that she is protesting going to school when she has no idea what is really going on in her daughter's life. Ouch. Then Buffy covers to try and not worry her mum.
Buffy's dad is visiting. The mysterious estranged father. So I don't actually know why Joyce and Hank divorced and I can't remember if they ever say why in the series or in the comics (I need to read them at some point). In season 3 'Lover's Walk' Joyce tells Spike that they both just grew apart. In season 4 'Fear Itself' Buffy thinks she was part of the reason why, but Joyce shuts that down and says she didn't. Then in season 7 'Conversations With Dead People' Buffy tells Holden that she thinks he cheated. Despite all of the possible reasons and Joyce trying to tell her otherwise, Buffy still believes she was part of the reason why her parents divorced. Especially after all she has done since she became a slayer, that could have exacerbated it. It would make sense that she would blame herself.
Can someone please explain teenage boys to me? Especially Xander remembering what type of jumper the teacher was wearing but not the lesson itself even though he took an active part in it?
Awww, cute non-threatening kid. How do I know he's non-threating? Because he is wearing light coloured clothing. Unlike the Anointed One where he is wearing dark coloured clothing.
Everyone screaming at the spiders? Tarantulas? This is one of the few times I will agree with lots of screaming, I have arachnophobia so I would be running out of that classroom not giving a fuck about my education.
The kid is sorry about what happened. See, non-threatening.
The Master and Spike are the only vampires I can remember that willing touch crosses despite all the burning the suffer.
Hank Summers adores his daughter. Oh sure he does. Yet he's barely around, ditches Buffy on her birthday in season 3, and did he do anything when Joyce was ill or when she died? Did he even go to her funeral? That's bullshit that he adores his daughter.
Giles nightmare #1: getting lost in the stacks in the library. As nightmares go, that's fairly tamed.
Buffy nightmare #1: surprise history test. That's what happens when you skip so many history classes to go train with librarian. Seriously needs to mix up which classes she skips.
I feel horrible for Wendell. He really cared for the creatures he kept and someone else's negligence killed them, but he's the one with the guilt.
Whoa, ugly dude! Lucky 19, that's definitely gonna be relevant later.
Part 2 tomorrow.

Thoughts on Wendell & Wild
Tumblr media
There is a part of me that gets kinda scared about criticizing stop-motion animation.
Anytime I see a movie like Coraline, Nightmare before Christmas, BoxTrolls, Paranorman, Kubo and the Two Strings, Chicken Run, Wallace and Gromit, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Pinocchio, or anything like that, I always feel guilty if I don't end up liking it because you can always feel the crazy amount of hard work that goes into making these things come to life, into making this animation work, into making these characters move. You can always sense the passion, the effort, and the creativity.
I always feel like the world's biggest and most soulless villain if I don't love every single part of the final product of these types of productions.
That said... I don't think I liked this movie very much...
Tumblr media
Kinda like Pinocchio, I don't think this is a bad movie by any means, but it is one that just didn't work for me, and much like that movie I feel like it's my fault for imagining something completely different from what I actually got.
When I first saw the trailer and the words "We all have demons... My demons have names!" I got crazy excited about all the possibilities of what this could mean.
Like, "Oh my God! A story about a girl dealing with the personification of her inner demons that are affecting her in the real world?? That sounds awesome!! The visuals you could do with that! The messages you could send! The personal character journey and internal struggle you could present!! The possibilities!!! What if they try to play around with it and make you question if the demons are really there or if it's all in her head? What are the sources of her demons? What are her fears and struggles?? Ugh! I can't wait to see this!!!"
...
And then I actually watched the movie and... Little by little my expectations went down the drain.
The big thing that just didn't work for me were the three main characters. I just could not get invested in Wendell, Wild, or Kat.
Tumblr media
For starters, Wendell and Wild are not "her demons." They keep throwing these lines like "I have demons, these are my demons" and so on... But in reality, these two are just some dudes that just happened to meet with Kate, the main lead.
They have very boring designs for a pair of demons (you could have made them way uglier or scarier), very boring powers, they have next to no connection or interaction with Kat, and honestly... They don't really do anything interesting. They have this gel that can raise the dead, but that's it, and the most interesting characters that are revived aren't even revived by them. The freaking gel has more character and more plot relevance than these two.
Tumblr media
And then there is Kat. She has a freaking sick design but... that's about it, she's not really interesting.
Her only two moods are angry or indifferent. Every scene she's either acting like she doesn't want to be here or like she's about to punch someone. Usually that would be really cool but the rest of the cast of characters is honestly so nice to her that it just makes me wonder why she is always so annoyed.
Her classmates, her nun teacher, her bus driver, her friend, I kept waiting for any of them to make fun of or discriminate her for whatever reason, but everyone is legit just trying to be her friend and help her fit in, so watching her always being "I hate all of you!" just makes her look like such a brat.
And I get the point that she's dealing with some personal problems over her parent's death and the bullying she received in the opening scene, but it feels like the movie is trying to glamorize her aggressive behavior instead of presenting it as an issue she needs to work on.
"Look at how cool and awesome Kat is as she walks down the hallway while carrying this giant audio player that's... Probably interrupting everyone's classes and distracting all the students but... Who cares! She looks badass!!!"

I also felt her reason to feel guilty was... Kinda silly. She feels bad because she screamed after seeing a worm on an apple and that led to a car crash. I'm not sure what the message is meant to be here... Don't feel bad for being afraid of a worm??
Why not just make it so she steals the apple behind her parents' back and later her mother finds out and that leads to a discussion that escalates and then that causes the car crash? It could show how even small actions of selfish misbehavior could lead to dire consequences and would make her guilt and self-blame hit a lot harder and thus make me sympathize more with why she's so, as she puts it, unable to forgive herself.

The one thing I absolutely loved (aside from the rest of the cast which is legit a good cast, I like these people a lot), was a scene somewhere around the middle of the movie where she does face her actual inner demons.
It reminded me a lot of the Aggie scene from Paranorman. They play around with visualizing her struggles and emotions, and they make her realize that she needs to confront them, and they make the struggles actually have a form and made me wonder why wasn't the movie more about this instead??
Why not make it so she's being haunted by this thing instead of those two guys who she has absolutely zero chemistry with? Although to be fair, she doesn't really have chemistry with any of the characters.
Tumblr media
So... Yeah... Once again I'm being a jerk blaming a movie for not being what I wanted it to be instead of just trying to enjoy what it actually is... But, man! I just keep thinking of what this could have been.
One of my favorite scenes of all time in any movie is the Aggie fight in Paranorman. I love how the emotions, and visuals, and messages all come together to just create one beautiful perfect scene, and I thought this entire movie was going to be that. Which... Yeah, that's on me for creating something in my head instead of really looking at what's in front of me.
As for what's really in front of me... I think this movie is fine. The story was fine, the message was fine, the main characters were fine... The side characters were really cool and the visuals were really cool, but for the most part, I just felt it made for a fine final product.
I didn't really love it but I can't really say it did anything particularly awful, it just didn't do what I wish it had done.

Ok I'm watching Fear the Walking Dead for the first time and why in season 7 did they ruin all of Victor's character development and make him a selfish asshole Negan type who ordered a little girl and her family killed and separated Wendell and Sarah?? Why did they do my gay, reformer con man so dirty 😭😭

i feel at home already... maybe i'll just stay here, hm?
but now i'm curious about what other types of films you like. would you like to ramble about that too?
- 🪼
Other films? Hm. I enjoy anything The Little Prince related. I also really like The Prince of Egypt, Wendell & Wild—slashers like Fear Street, Pearl, Evil Dead… It really depends on my mood.
As for shows, I’ve currently been watching The Boys and Supernatural. Some I’ve already watched have been The Walking Dead, Black Mirror, The Good Place and Community.
Are you familiar with any of these, love? If not, tell me the ones you like.

Alright Disabled Ranting For a Sec
So we all know I joke about not surviving apocalypses and shit but like, real talk...I wish (zombie) apocalypse stories addressed the fact that in that scenario, there is a reason the "strong" (read: abled-bodied) survive, and that's not because they're necessarily "built" for that world, it's because, as we're seeing all too well with covid, the government will do everything in their power to ensure that those people are the ones who survive, who can reshape humanity. And you know what happens to those of us who aren't able-bodied? We are the ones who are left to die, who make up the hoards of the dead. And if we somehow manage to survive the initial outbreak and infection, well, we won't last very long. Eugene is portrayed as annoying and a coward in the beginning, but, as someone who sees him as Autistic, man isn't being cowardly. He's lying to fucking survive! Because that's what we have to do in these situations! Depend on able-bodied people! And it's depressing! A lot of people (including myself, admittedly) romanticize apocalypses, but that is a privilege because the reality of the situation is that a (zombie) apocalypse is an excuse for people to practice eugenics. It's an excuse to get rid of disabled people once in for all.
"You weren't meant to survive this--" because you decided that. You left us to die and took away any means of survival we had because we didn't fit into your new world.
Anyway, this is why I love Connie and Princess, and Reagan in A Quiet Place., as well as Wendell on Fear. They are disabled and they are surviving. But I think it's due time we also start featuring blind protagonists and protagonists with prosthetics and cerebral palsy and other disabling physical illnesses, as well as mental illnesses other than the stereotypical depression and PTSD. I want to see stories where we show the reality of pandemics on the disabled community and see protagonists fighting to create a new world for them to live in. I like apocalypses because of the rebirth they symbolize, but it's time we start really showing the casualties made to enable that. I want to see a badass, disabled protagonist who gets to live. It doesn't need to be a disability story. We don't need any inspiration porn. But we don't need to completely sweep under the rug the reality of being disabled in an apocalyptic world (Which is where I side-eye TWD and Fear, because while it's great that Connie and Wendell are just two characters who happen to be disabled, neither show has really explored how hard it is for them). We, I, need stories where a disabled protagonist is fighting to live.
And succeeds.
Because dammit, we deserve to be in the new world too.
