When I was 14, my father printed out a paper of reasons why I should ask to be baptized, reasons he believed I was ready, and his own apology for not baptizing me a few years sooner.

He called me away from the kitchen, where I was helping to make lunch or maybe it was supper.

In the machine shed, leaning on a dusty tractor wheel, he read the paper to me and cried a little. He had to pause and clear his throat a few times.

I felt deeply, deeply ashamed. We both knew I’d been avoiding the conversation for too many weeks to attempt to avoid it again. Him standing there, reading reasons and quoting Bible like that, and crying a little to boot, was righteously forcing my hand.

I genuinely don’t even remember what I said, but I know it was all half-apologies, feeble excuses and explanations.

He said he figured it was time, and that so did mom. I mean, really, did I have any reasons to not be baptized? Any sins before God? Any humiliations I wanted to dredge up in front of the church elders to talk about and probe and repent of, just to postpone my submission?

My mouth quietly agreed to the baptism. My consciousness floated up by the rafters somewhere in the hazy dust floating in the cracks of light seeping in through the walls.

He put his hand heavy on my head and prayed a blessing on my decision.

So much of my childhood was characterized by that sort of lazy-summer-evening sense of doom.

A few weeks later I did my duty, made my vows. And it didn’t feel clean or holy or even like a decision. It just felt like water.

I tried to mark it as a big day, by writing the date big in my journal under “Baptized” and signing it, and copying out a Bible verse from Acts chapter 10. I guess it didn’t feel any different because it wasn’t any different: saying the vows and submitting to the ritual was all formality, I had always lived those vows and would live them for eternity. For people like me, there was no such thing as a choice.

I felt a little silly for having put it off so long, really. I could have gotten the whole thing over with a lot sooner if I hadn’t been so self-centered on how I felt about it all.

Hopefully this will be my last one in a long while I can live with 7 fuggin wh characters HHFHFUDJSNKSSJ- well- technically 8 if you include Betsy-

But to keep it (somewhat) short and sweet- my loser- a ye ol Milkman- Zachary Milksop (chronically lactose intolerant) and Betsy (a lil mascot moo sentient puppet)

Another character made almost spur in the moment again (like Mari) though thankfully not another bUG, but just some average human smhh. He’s a really simple guy, a loser, is as interesting as normal milk— he’s just the ye ol milkman who delivers you that gud shid smhh— enjoyer of the finer things in life (lunchables). A lil flirty and charming (in possibly the cringiest way possible) however he doesn’t really seem to pick up anyone besides the local cows that constantly harass him (and eats his pants). He enjoys watching them though, from v e r y m u c h afar——

Also Betsy- a very sweet woman! She always greets everyone and has the friendliest extroverted personality ever! Always the type to bring (albeit tiny) gifts for her favorite neighbors and always leads when talking to anyone. Not like she would allow Zach to say anything anyway, she hates his polyester guts (and only him smhh)

Thinking about the fact that Sun and Moon definitely have some sort of protocol to spot abuse (being daycare attendants and all) which means that they know exactly how mistreated they are.

They know that leaving them alone for so long is neglect. They know that the way the techs probably treat them is abuse and dehumanization. They know that the controlled shocks would be illegal if they were human.

But that's the thing, they aren't human. So that means it's okay. They have to be okay with it because they aren't even alive. They can't even feel pain, everybody tells them so. They're just an object.

But then why does it hurt so much?

hewwooo tuesday here's a silly little question for you since your "check it out, frogs!!" blog title always delights me: how do each of your characters feel about frogs? 👀

I *love* Frogs, but how do the blorbeans feel about em...? Well... I had to really think about it TTuTT BUT! Chuu favors mechanical creatures over flesh 'n blood ones, and while her getting to the First is ambiguous and mysterious (being a non-wol, I just try not to think about it too much) She DOES... love the Dwarven Mecha frogs. And. The biggest frog of them all... Formi.... <3 …. So she doesn’t care for frogs much. She has sent Tuesday out frog catching for alchemical ingredients though….

Colette... Doesn't have any feelings this way or that about frogs, really. They're small, they're kinda slimey? but mostly they're just, very small. Except Gigantoads, I suppose, but those are a toad, and decidedly less slimey, by virture of being a toad. The ambivalence remains though! They're not that tricky to fight so long as you know how to wriggle out of their tongue grasp. (I did... take some frog-related Colette pictures tho >:3 I'm just gonna, post em a bit later, since the theme got away from me) Gigantoads make for a decent enough meal so long as you prep the meat right :T the legs are the most edible part yk.

Ishi is much more fond of Poro Roggo's, Matoya's froggy familiars. They're wearing LITTLE HATS ! They wave little canes! They're quite frankly adorable and they have little croaking voices. What's not to enjoy? (And also, there's something really nice about being out in the marshes of Mor Dhona and finding a little frog instead of a Morbol ready to stink bomb you, HAH)

Tuesday shivers when he thinks about frogs (knows the difference between a frog and a toad, still pictures a Gigantoad first, and does not much love being yanked mid-cast from his Ley lines into body slamming range.) Finds just a regular little frog endearing and will get down in the mud and muck to look at it though. Is especially fascinated by frogs that stick to things like leaves and trees and their camouflages uwu He’s the one who likely knows the most about frogs, and would gladly tell you more about them. Probably compares information with Erenville, if they ever meet up in non-life-threatening-situations.

Tangy finds them fun ! If she’s on a walk or a run or an errand and it’s drizzly and she sees a little frog hop across the pathway there’s literally 0 inhibitions in her body that stop her from also hopping or skipping for at least a minute (still on her way, but a frogs leap is so charming. They’re like tiny dragoons! She points this similarity out to Estinien once. Krile laughs, Estinien looks constipated- you know the face.) She also has a weird compulsion to put them into her mouth, though, so if she catches one….. make sure it’s not poisonous. She doesn’t even plan to eat it! They just look like they would fit perfectly in her kitty jaws (she is sometimes correct).

Mochiie had to get used to frog song when he moved to Gridania. The rivers and lakes and greenery abounding let the little critters thrive in a way they don’t particularly on the Steppe. …. He comes around to finding it relaxing and feels uneasy when he doesn’t hear them anymore lmfao. In non-WoL au’s, probably sometimes tasks adventurer’s with catching frogs for alchemical ingredients OR to bring back to the pond he’s been carefully maintaining to encourage the little beepers to live in it. (Btw, his favorite frog singers are the Pobblebonk or Banjo Frog [YT Link], and the Pacific Chorus Frog [YT Link] 🥰)

Levraut…. I’m still not sure. 🤔 I think he’d like them, but he wouldn’t feel strongly about them. He WOULD eat them though. As would Colette and Mochi… I mentioned Tangy liked to stick them in her mouth but actually eating them seems like a waste, since she’s so big and they’re so small. Like eating a blueberry. I can say his favorite frogs would be the Blue Jeans Poison Frog, for their striking jackets of warning colors, and the desert rain frog, whose perfect spherical nature and grumpy face is endearing.

Winglesswriter's OC: Lady Ikath is a noblewoman raised in luxury by a loving family. Despite being a beautiful lady who loves fashion, jewelry, and ballroom gossip, she's not the spoiled brat you would expect. She's kind and caring, gentle to the point of naivety. Under the delicate exterior hides a spine made of steel, though, that helps her withstand the hard times that come later in her life.

My OC: Tristan is the youngest child of a fabulously wealthy country gentleman in England in the early 19th century. He is the spoiled brat you would expect. 12 years old at the time of the main plot, he's spent his childhood so far sequestered indoors due to chronic medical issues. He's intellectually precocious and knows a lot about a wide variety of academic subjects, but he's particularly passionate about the occult and fancies himself a black magician. He'd previously been obsessed with science, then got frustrated with the limitations it had in the time period and turned to magic. He also loves literature, art, music, and fashion. He's self-centered and arrogant and can be quite cruel. He tends to be duplicitous in the way he acts towards others vs his intentions, and insolent towards adults/authority figures. The lack of affection and socialization in his formative years has made him see others as objects, a means to an end. But he's also curious, creative, and fun loving. If he finds you fascinating or shares your interests, you might get genuine conversation from him- though he might act insufferably entitled to know everything about you/everything you know. He's extremely determined to get what he wants. He recently summoned a demon to help him run away from home, and now he's on his own. (Well..the demon is..still there..) Free at last! (Except for the..pact..) Tristan's a sickly pale and frail looking kid, with blue eyes and dark hair.

How they’d interact: Honestly? I think Tristan would love Lady Ikath. He loves fashionable ladies. He loves fashion, jewelry, and ballrooms too! He'd want to know especially about all the balls she goes to. Because she's kind she probably would actually give Tristan the time of day, unlike other adults, which would make him like her even more. If she was really sweet to him, it might make him a bit uncomfortable (he's not used to that) but that wouldn't deter him. When others see the good in him he doesn't see in himself, it doesn't line up with his core beliefs and he's stymied and doesn't know what to do with that. So he may get quiet. But not for long. He would barrage her with questions about her interesting life and would want to know where she was a noblewoman of (Ikath doesn't sound English after all, and he'd be super intrigued by a "foreigner"). He might ask her if she's a spy, or other inappropriate questions like how many amours she has, if she herself has ever been involved in a scandal, etc. Things might sour depending on if/how much this would bother her, but Tristan could handle it if she shut him down. He'd probably be put out if she cast him off though. He might actually find it in himself to exercise self-restraint just so he can keep hanging out with her.
