Not– not that there's a real Nate situation, per se, but it’s just– Mikey has Nate, and it’s kind of a thing.

(Or: there very much is a Nate situation. There's also a Mikey situation. Eventually, they realize this.)

why i love it: to me, this is the superbuddies fic-it’s got the perfect pacing from friends to lovers with just the right around of blurred lines between what’s normal for friends and what’s something more, and their characterizations are just *chef’s kiss* it’s also such a great take on soulmates, and it really covers the different ways people can feel about their soulmates/the concept in general

kiss the night air by clementiae

summary: Jersey, Jersey. Whispered into the warmth of their laced fingers like a prayer.

It was a stupid dream. Mikey wanted it to last.

why i love it: never has under 1.3k words made me want to cry as much as this fic has. the way talking about their dream of playing together evolved, the narrative structure that builds? absolutely hits, very good if you want to cry about the expansion draft

summary: In the history of hockey, there’s no way something like Nate suggested has never happened before and Mikey feels out of control following that thought down the rabbit hole, how he’d be powerless to stop it if it did, and that’s if he’d even want to stop it. The terrifying thing is that even though he can’t see it happening—they’re both straight, this whole fucking thing is just a thought experiment, pretend—now that Nate’s painted the picture for him, he can’t stop thinking about it—whether he’d even notice the signs until it was too late.

why i love it: i’m SUCH a sucker for fake dating aus, and this one does it so well. It really leans into the messy and complicated feelings part of fake relationships that i don’t think gets explored enough, and it handles it so, so, so well.

summary: Mikey didn’t really pay attention much in biology— didn’t have to, not really— but he vaguely remembers something about doing heat by yourself in a pinch. There were lots of warnings about it.

“You can’t just be alone,” he says and Nate lets out something that sounds like laughing.

Mikey is just trying to be helpful, and Nate is just trying to get through it.

why i love it: i really love omegaverse fics that invert the usual takes on the tropes (and this is one of them!) and it just really is a great look at their dynamic. i really like this take on mikey and nate as a whole, as well

summary: Mikey wishes he wasn’t in love with Nate, because everyone knows that juniors shit—it doesn’t work out. Like Dylan and Mitch.

why i love it: lots of fun bad communication between nate and mikey, and i think this one really handles the emotion of it all so well. absolutely peak idiots to lovers, and i really love that it gives us both of their point of views

summary: “It was a mistake. That’s— I didn’t mean that, and that’s it.” Mikey says, but he can’t quite meet Nate’s eyes. “That’s where I’m at, I guess.”

“That’s what I thought. So, we’re on the same page.” Nate nods.

(or: lost gold medals, ill-advised snapchats, love confessions, meddling teammates, and a whole lot of miscommunication.)

why i love it: i just think the premise of this works so, so, so well for them-it’s another great idiots to lovers vibe for nate and mikey, and the whole concept of drunkenly telling your crush you love them via snapchap? yes, good, correct

there is a bridge over a river, and some days it is lovely by lotts

summary: “What are you doing here?” Mikey asks, trying and failing not to stare, but Nate’s staring right back, like he’s also not sure what’s going on.

“I figured I’d meet you here,” Nate says. “Put a familiar face on the Binghamton welcoming committee.”

Mikey looks around. “There’s no one else here.”

“Well, it was either a familiar face or no face,” Nate says with an uncertain smile, like he’s not quite sure he’s allowed to make a joke.

why i love it: perhaps i love it because i like to hurt my own feelings, but this is really just a well done fic that really just hits. it’s honest and emotional and you can feel the weight of that throughout it, but it does have a pretty light hearted ending that is good and hopeful. bonus points for being one of my favorite break up make up fics ever and currently my most read fic of 2021

summary: Mikey McLeod is gifted — or cursed — with the power of psychic persuasion. With the ability to bend people’s ears to his will, Mikey is well aware of how dangerous a power he wields, and the responsibility he bears to not abuse it.

Though he rarely uses his gifts, new developments in his friendship with Nate Bastian may threaten his control. Mikey would do anything to protect his best friend, including finding a way to get rid of his powers for good. Luckily, Newark’s own witch in the woods may be able to help.

why i love it: magic au!!!! i cannot stress how fantastic the world building is in this series (you don’t have to read the tknp fic that’s first to follow what’s happening, but it is worth the read) and mikey’s feelings towards nate and his own struggle is just!!!! honestly i’m just a series of exclamation points about it all

Invisible string by philatoi

summary: Mikey has known he’s liked guys since the first time Nathan Bastian smiled at him. That’s the thing, almost everything about Mikey’s sexuality has involved Nate — which isn’t necessarily bad. In Mikey’s humble opinion, Nate is the perfect person to fall in love with. Highly recommended. Mikey doesn’t regret putting all his eggs in that basket for the last six years.

why i love it: the pining in this, the emotions of it all-just absolutely top notch all the way around, and really just what i wanted out of a superbuddies fic. it really just feels so right for nate and mikey, and i just love it

Nate knew this couldn’t be true, his and Mikey’s season had just finished and they were both exhausted. Still, Nate knew what Mikey meant when he said he couldn’t go to sleep yet, that he was too wired up, because he felt exactly the same way.

“I think I’ve got a way to make you more relaxed,” Nate said, mouth curving into a smirk as he brushed a hand over Mikey’s cheek. Mikey’s mouth smiled against his own.

What made you ship it?

I think I primarily started shipping them when they first showed up in McStrome fic? I thought it was incredibly cute (and also unhinged) that Mikey asked GM Ray Shero to draft Nate. I don't think I went HARD for them until "what a run we had tho" and then I went absolutely batshit when "NJ claims Bastian" happened.

I think, when it comes down to it, my favourite thing about them is just how fucking weird and in love they are with each other? Like, Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider are in love and beautiful, but Mikey and Nate? They're WEIRD and also in love. Like has any other hockey talked for three minutes straight about their best friend's extra tooth? Yeah, I didn't think so. That's love, babey.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I think "unpopular" is perhaps taking it tew far, but I think sometimes Mikey's characterization in fic is entirely based on how we think Nate sees him, whether or not the fic is from Nate's POV? I know of the two of them, Mikey's the unknowable one, so I get totally get it! I think it would be interesting, though, to see other takes of Mikey based on the material we have so far!

what's up my pals my reading this month was uhhhhhhh unhinged? clearly i'm doing, based on the number of found family fics i have read and the fact that i reread both cut to the feeling and once more with feeling this month, rip 2 me everyone

but anyway, must reads for this month:

-i know i was yours long before you were mine by sensationalshehulk is such a fun little nate bastian/mikey mcleod fic. absolutely love the premise (marriage clause!!!!!) and the vibes and the way the team all tries to help keep these two together even when scattered across the globe, very sweet

-it's hard to be a saint in the city by theaa was a super compelling jack hughes/nolan patrick fic. i loved this characterization of jack so much, and i really think the fic made this ship work, made it compelling and engaging and it's fun read

-tragic ends by trueneutral is an absolutely lovely quinton byfield/alex turcotte ghost/haunted house fic. it takes a certain something for me to enjoy a fic around a ghost, and this has it. really cool world building, the dynamic between quinton and alex is perfect, and i got SO emotional reading it

Fic Recs!

@enter-remiges did a recs post awhile back, and it introduced me to the the incredible dystopia AU that swallowed my life for a few days. It was great, and I feel like I owe the world a recs post of my own! So here, months later, are a couple fics in a few different fandoms and ships that I have enjoyed recently.

you should see the things we do by threeturn Fandom: Pod Save America RPF Ship: Tommy Vietor/Jon Lovett Words: 5,461

Look I”m not saying you should be reading PODSA fic, but like, why aren’t you reading PODSA fic? So fun! So funny! So witty, so banter! And the characters (uh, people) are so THEMSELVES, its charming. This fic is a very good version of those things. Its so funny it makes me laugh out loud REGULARLY and it incorporates actual details nicely, and its sweet and perfect. You should read it.

“It was weird because usually Tommy only had gay thoughts about men in uniform and Barack Obama. Tommy darted a look over at Lovett, who was probably the most civilian person he had ever met. He had fallen asleep.”

A Case Study in Non-Traditional Pack Dynamics by 7iris Fandom: Hockey RPF Ship: Carey Price/PK Subban Words: 7,449

PK and Carey are a good ship (RIP!) but this is the best version of them. It is! Carey Price is obviously a werewolf, recalcitrant but good at it. PK is having a great time. The story of the two of them is lovely and has just enough like, animalistic scent nonsense, but more than anything this is just one of my favorite little built worlds ever? I would very much like to go to this conference, and the author does such a good job of making it real and charming and fun. Its gorgeous.

"And mate," Kayla says.

"And mate," Carey repeats dutifully, "at the Greater Pacific Northwest Werewolf Symposium?"

puttin' on my shades (to cover up my eyes) by electrumqueen Fandom: Hockey RPF Ship: Adam Henrique/Taylor Hall (but it doesn’t really matter. Taylor Hall/growth and emotional understanding.) Words: 26,844

Honestly, this is just a fic about Taylor Hall being sad in New Jersey. It is a WALLOW. I love it quite a bit.

Eventually he like, learns to love again and that part is cool too but its just so well written and so evocative and like the feelings are so SHARP. It manages to be funny and clever even while its unbearably sad, and watching him pick himself up is…its great. Also, Mikey McLeod. Ok.

Taylor’s puking in the gutter on a Monday night when he runs into the kid. They stare at each other for a second and then Taylor, bent over, hands on his knees like he’s fifteen again, lifts his head to make eye contact. His mouth tastes fucking foul. His stomach hurts.

The kid blinks at him, and then bolts.

What Will Survive Of Us by Ferritin4 Fandom: Hockey RPF Alexander Ovechkin/Nicklas Backstrom Words: 26,093

Oof. OOOoooooffff. No one does Nicky and Ovie like Ferritin does. All their fics are so good, this one is just the newest and its…its….*groaning noises.* Soul bonds, huh. Telepathy and shared emotions and buttoned up careful composed Nicklas Backstrom leaking his feelings all OVER the place.

Also its hot af. Like, telepathic plane blowjob hot *monkey with hands over its mouth emoji*

“They win against the Habs off a classic Ovechkin snipe, and Nicklas looks at him in the locker room and thinks, I’m sorry. He doesn’t know why.

He’s been radiating apologies for a week at least, but now: now, with Alex looking at him, his face a mystery, Nicke can only think it, and hope.

The room feels different, suddenly. Nicklas’s skin feels warm, like sunlight in the wintertime.”

Seven Universes: Remember by quigonejinn Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe/Captain America Ship: uhhhh Words: 1,609

I don’t always want fic to rip my heart out, but when I DO. This is 7 possible ways things could have gone at the end of Winter Soldier and man they are all bad. REAL Bad. As the author’s note says, “This is not a fic about fluffy unicorn puppy cuddles. The first universe involves suicide. Things proceed from there.”

But its so gorgeous, these heartbreaking chiming possibilities, these explorations of a single moment and the ways that the moments before and after can affect them, the people these characters all get to be, the ideas it explores. It’s so cool. I’ve read it many many times.

“Steve Rogers puts his hand on the Tesseract, and he wishes for the Winter Soldier to remember.

It has the effect that he wants. The Winter Soldier comes to a skidding stop about twenty feet away. He crumples; he goes down on his knees, and he makes long, terrified noises of fear. Steve hesitates, but sees the Winter Soldier yank his mask off and throw it on the floor. There are real tears. There appears to be real anger. Steve steps close, then a little closer; the sight of his old, best, childhood friend on his knees, weeping, feels like a knife in the heart.”

The rarest pair you have a wip about? Why them? Do you have that one wip you have had for ages, thought many times of deleting and abandoning totally but occasionally you open the doc, edit a bit or add a sentence or two bit it still never really gets ahead? What is it, how old is it and why do still you keep it around?

oh man i just went back and finished a mitchell stephens/taylor raddysh soulmate au that i started literally last summer? i have a few fics like that tbh... i just don’t like deleting stuff. there’s a comfort in going back and completing old fic, like if i’m *totally* stuck i have something that’s 80% done that’s a little less daunting than like. a full fic, uk? there’s also the auston/zach offseason fic i started last july, a few mitch/auston fics, and the mikey/nate roller disco au that fall into that category.

as for rarest pair? tie between lee/davidson, mcleod/strome, and joseph/cirelli, probably.

Taylor Raddysh/Mikey McLeod - A WJ Primer

I feel like I should start off by saying this is not my fault and that I never asked for it and this is entirely this pictures fault. 

Anyway these great kids played together on Canada’s 2017 World Juniors team and where frequently seen standing next to each other in the presentation lines.

This isn’t the first time they have played together but despite being on seperate OHL teams (Taylor on the Erie Otters and Mikey on the MIssasauga Steelheads) the pair played hockey together with the Toronto Marlboros from atom all the way up to minor midget where got to play along side fellow WJ teammates Dylan Strome and Mitch Stephens.

They knew each other back when Mikeys hair was very un-Mikey (thanks taylor for the great receipts on that one). Anyway they won some trophies, chirped each other on insta and parted ways as they started there Major Junior Careers on seperate teams in different conferences. 

For the next two years they had a lot of near misses both playing fro team canada at the U17 World Hockey challenge except on different teams and then facing off again at the OHL top prospects team. They never really left each others orbit, but they also never really hung again until the 2016 NHL combine.

After the draft World Juniors development camp was in the summer and everyones favourites where there except one noticeable exception that would go on to be invited to training camp come December Taylor Raddysh. Taylor then proceeded to tear it up in the OHL throughout the first 2 months leading the league in scoring which was enough to get him noticed by the Hockey Canada Scouts and win him an invitation to the World Juniors Selection Camp where he roomed with Mikey McLeod.

The pair would then go on to start the tradition of standing next to each other in pretty much every anthem line and simultaneously steal my heart.

They also engaged in the proven Canadian hockey boy flirting method of tagging them in pictures of yourself and replying with equally confusing emoji selections.

However tragically, all good things must come to and end and in the face of the worlds most crushing international defeat we look to mikey mcleod for words of wisdom and/or inspirations to move forward.

luckily for us, their friendship/relationship lives on in near constant Instalive love confessions.

Mikey replied with - “love you T” so thats enough the fuel this ship through until at least next december in my eyes.

fic recs: what do you think is a super underrated fic? there's a ton of authors with expansive universes and drabbles and stuff, but what do you think is a good fic that's amazing but doesn't get a ton of attention? (she asks, not at all because she's already read all of the big fics and is hungrily searching for more)

hahaha, i honestly usually choose a pairing, set filter to complete, and read anything that catches my eye as i work my way through every single page. so i really do need more specific parameters to tell you fics you might like, i’ve just read so many. like what pairings have you tried and would you be open to trying? or are you like me and have literally read almost anything if it looks like a decent fic?

also, like, what makes something underrated? like, is there a certain amount of comments/kudos/hits under which something becomes labeled as unappreciated?

if you’re like me and read literally anything, and are looking for something a bit different with substantial content to browse: have you gone through the kane/toews archive on ao3? because like, there are some really amazing fics there- most written pre2015- that will never get proper recognition because you know, kane is a scumbag and toews is problematic.

again, i don’t support the players, and i read the characters in the fic as fictional and separate from the real life counter parts, but honestly some of them are really beautifully written?

How Alex dealt with Mikey & Nater must be from growing up with William eh?

Omg I started a fic about Alex Dealing with Mikey and Nater and idk if I’ll ever finish it bc I have zero (0) plot in mind, but some of my favorite lines:

Alex can tolerate a lot of bullshit. No seriously, he’s been doing it his whole life. There are plenty of guys he knows who say they’re mentally tough, but Alex has been living with Mikey McLeod and Nate Bastian for like, a whole year. That takes resilience.

Not that there’s anything like wrong with Mikey and Nate. He loves them, much as any good teammate loves their lineys. And they’re good friends. They’re just, you know, Mikey and Nate.

“What does that even mean?” Willy asks, when Alex complains about it.

“It’s like - you’ve seen them before, they do that thing!” Alex says, because it should be obvious.

“Use your words, Alex. I know Swedish is a better language, but English isn’t that hard - ”

Which is totally missing the point. Willy’s being deliberately thick. William, Alex decides, is an asshole.

Oh and of course lmao this part

Nate would probably get mad at the girl currently macking on Mikey. Alex can’t really blame her, Mikey’s got the whole blond hair blue eyes thing that people seem to love. Plus, he looks like a nice boy who’d treat you right.

“I love your eyebrows,” the girl says. Okay that’s a little weird.

Mikey thanks her, because he’s a nice boy who treats people right.

Nate magically materializes over Mikey’s shoulder, which isn’t really a surprise because Nater has like Mikey Radar Extra Sensitive. People keep talking about Mikey’s speed and how explosively fast he is. They’ve probably never seen Nate move when he spots someone hitting on Mikey though.

Summary:

The thing no one tells you about falling for your best friend is that despite all attempts to make sure nothing changes, things will change. And once they do, you can’t stop them from changing either.

(or: Nate isn’t exactly sure when he fell in love with Mikey.)
