My grandmother, my Lola, was an immigrant. Once, my Aunty, her sister, held my pale hand in hers, and said, I’m disappearing.
Last fall, I visited the museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe, and afterwards, I cried, because I could not find a reflection of myself in there.
There was only one piece of Filipino art in the whole museum’s library, and it was a depiction of the crucifixion, in a very Spanish art style. Im sure they’d feature more if they could- if there was more to speak of. But there isn’t much.
Colonialism has swallowed it all. Many records were burned. Many were made of materials that don’t last long to begin with. Even the name of the islands comes from a conqueror. I too am a product of colonialism, as my grandparents met during the US occupation of the Philippines.
Many can look back to the stories of their ancestors. Many can look to an ancient piece of art and see the stories of their family.
I didn’t think I could, until my uncle started to research. He found that we are visayan, that we are potentially of an indigenous group who call themselves Waray. He introduced me to visayan tattoo art, and his research lead me to mythology.
Though rare, it turns out there are stories, and Bakunawa is one of them. Once, the earth had seven moons, and then Bakunawa swallowed six of them. The people beat drums to keep him from swallowing the last.
So too, I feel, my family is beating the drums, to keep what remnants of stories we have alive. My Uncle continues in his craft, and I grow into mine. I learned a lot in this mural, which I will take into my future art. Together, we will chase the dragon away from our last moon.
Carcass-Cornucopia by Agnes Arellano. Cold-cast marble, unhulled rice, metal hooks, abaca rope. 1987.
"The female figure is a cast of my body, done in 1987 and exhibited as Carcass-Cornucopia. She was hooved, hung upside down with slaughterhouse hooks, and through the gaping hole of her slashed abdomen, the Serpent and bounty of the Universe split forth. Inside was the Lordling Bulol: from destruction comes new life."
Saw this audio getting popular ✨️🏃♀️ I also wanted to showcase how so many people(mostly white people) would think that Filipinos don't count as "Asian" and would call us "Hispanic"/"Pacific Islander". Just because we have been colonized by Spain doesn't mean we are suddenly "hispanic". We have our own culture, languages and customs in different regions of the country way before the Spaniards came. No, we dont speak Spanish, we speak Tagalog, Bisaya, etc so on and so forth. We have over 120-187 languages(not including dialects). Contrary to popular belief, we don't have "Spanish lineage", we have more ancestry/heritage from Chinese, Indians, and other Southeast Asian countries, it is stated that the most Spanish lineage we had is only 0.5 which is teeny weeny. We are as Asian as we could get ✨️
The ethnic groups showed in the video:
Aeta(their ancestry came from the Aborigines of Australia)
2019, Boo-chi Halloween Set! I remember thinking this was my first holiday with Buchi, so I wanted to go all out for Halloween. I felt like I did a good job! I had the most fun making the Trick-or-Treat photos and trying to decide what’s in each pumpkin basket. I hope it gave people a good laugh.
The one, the only, Nymphadora Tonks! Inspired by a picture of Hayley Kiyoko, but she ended up looking more like my aunt so now Filipina Tonks is my official headcanon (note the tattoos lol)
I do hope that Olivia won't go to the Eras Tour at all. Despite the general refusal by a lot of Swifties to acknowledge that something went downhill between Olivia and Taylor a long time ago it's crystal clear at this point that they're not on good terms anymore and going to the tour would probably be a move to keep that unhinged cult-like fanbase away from herself. It would be understandable on some extent but I'm SO tired of Swifties' entitlement with this idea that Olivia owes everything to Taylor+them and I hope that she'll keep refusing to bend to their ever growing pressure the same way she has done so far.
