Have you watched Nimona? Whenever she used her wings I couldn’t help but be reminded of Tik-tik from the story “Si Kalipay” by Christina Newhard and Happy Garaje. Tik-tik is Cebuano for a spirit or creature similar to the Tagalog Manananggal, which flies without legs! Hashtag Nimona-nananggal! Here she is in pre-colonial Visayan attire, inspired by a class I attended held by Karakoa Productions based in Cebu. She’s decked out in gold, with kasikas or arm bands, a kamagi chain worn as a sash, a lambong top, a bakus or belt Batman would be jealous of, and a heavy taklay or gold necklace.  I loved how she transformed into different animals in the film, so I imagined her here shapeshifting into different Philippine wildlife, and used different Philippine scripts to write their names. Lots of things going on here, which is how I saw Nimona. Bakunawa and the Last Moon

I am a third generation Filipino American.

My grandmother, my Lola, was an immigrant. Once, my Aunty, her sister, held my pale hand in hers, and said, I’m disappearing.

Last fall, I visited the museum of Folk Art in Santa Fe, and afterwards, I cried, because I could not find a reflection of myself in there.

There was only one piece of Filipino art in the whole museum’s library, and it was a depiction of the crucifixion, in a very Spanish art style. Im sure they’d feature more if they could- if there was more to speak of. But there isn’t much.

Colonialism has swallowed it all. Many records were burned. Many were made of materials that don’t last long to begin with. Even the name of the islands comes from a conqueror. I too am a product of colonialism, as my grandparents met during the US occupation of the Philippines.

Many can look back to the stories of their ancestors. Many can look to an ancient piece of art and see the stories of their family.

I didn’t think I could, until my uncle started to research. He found that we are visayan, that we are potentially of an indigenous group who call themselves Waray. He introduced me to visayan tattoo art, and his research lead me to mythology.

Though rare, it turns out there are stories, and Bakunawa is one of them. Once, the earth had seven moons, and then Bakunawa swallowed six of them. The people beat drums to keep him from swallowing the last.

So too, I feel, my family is beating the drums, to keep what remnants of stories we have alive. My Uncle continues in his craft, and I grow into mine. I learned a lot in this mural, which I will take into my future art. Together, we will chase the dragon away from our last moon.

1. Masskara festival

The smiling masks used in the festival were a declaration of Bacolod locals' resilience in the face of challenges and tragedy, prompting the city to become known as the “City of Smiles.

2. Dinagyang Festival

Is one of the biggest and world-class festivals in the Philippines. It traces the history of devotion to the Holy Child Jesus popularly known to Filipino devotees as Sr. Sto.

Halang-halang is a Bisaya spicy coconut chicken recipe that varies by location and even household, in the Visayas. 

Some recipes strictly use ginger, others use sili or chilis, to achieve that perfect heat. Native neighborhood chickens are favored in most places, but feel free to work with what is available. 

Substitute the chicken with mushrooms, tofu, or another plant-based protein for a healthier and heart-warming pot. Try making your Ginataang kalabasa a spicy veggie halang-halang-inspired soup by adding the tanglad or lemongrass, along with sili and luya or ginger. 

Spicy coconut dishes are not only common in the Philippines (like Gising-gising & Bikol express), but with our Southeast Asia neighbors including Thailand’s Tom kha gai - Thai coconut chicken soup made with local spices and cilantro.

Visayan spotted deer, also known as the Visayan deer, the Philippine spotted deer or Prince Alfred's deer, is a nocturnal and endangered species of deer located primarily in the rainforests of the Visayan islands of Panay and Negros though it once roamed other islands such as Cebu, Guimaras, Leyte, Masbate, and Samar.

This deer is named after Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He was the second son and fourth child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

We imagine this is only a small sliver of what brilliant gold was once held in the abundant rivers & waters of the islands.
