Since 2015 Sentimental Punk presents its research on structural & avant-garde female filmmakers and invites Sound Artists to create soundscapes for the presented works.

This special edition has been developed in collaboration with FilmCoop NY & Electronic Arts Intermix in context of Kotti-Shops Month Theme HEAT.

First Soundscape 2030 hs on Time!

At 20:00 hs we offer a touch tour for people with visual impairments, and an introduction with free access for live-transcripts to the AVA app for people with hearing impairments. People with hearing impairments are invited to sit down on one of the „sound chairs“ during the performance which transform the live-soundtracks into vibration frequencies. The venue is accessible via wheelchair.

# Marina Cyrino is a Brazilian flutist, sound artist and researcher currently based in Berlin. She works across the fields of improvisation, composition, instrument building and performative audio-visual installations. Her flute playing is characterized by singular techniques developed through the use of inside amplification. She explores subtle transformations of the air streams inside the flute’s tube and inside the flutist’s oral cavity, creating a constant kaleidoscopic movement of air-sounds shaped through unvoiced consonants, vowels and plosive sounds. The rhythmic use of the flute, the extensive use of objects and balloons attached to the instrument, and the use of disassembled flute parts are other striking elements of her playing. One of her main performative strategies is to play with flute stereotypes, revisiting and re(hear)sing Western flutist figures. By removing these figures from their original context and performing them in relation to the construction of Western modes of thinking, she experiment with playing-the-flute/ performing-the-flutist as a method for dismantling the different economies of an ‘universal’ narrative that imposes Western thinking as center of knowledges, languages and imaginations.

# Laura.aLL: the brazilian artist works and lives in Berlin and since 2004 she has been the guitarist of the band M.i.p.V _ Músicas intermináveis para Viagem (“Endless Music For Tripping”). She is an artist and researcher with a multidisciplinary background encompassing music and its relateds, performing arts, photography, video, chemistry and communication-journalism. Her work ranges from experimental art to ambient music, psychedelic rock, electroacoustic, noise and minimal.

# Roberta WJM Andreucci is a percussionist, an experimental producer and DJ, and on air personality. She has more than twenty year of experience organizing and promoting alternative music events. She practices plagiarism and the cutting and mixing of musical and ambiental aural sources. Early in her career she started focusing on the use of voices and on vocal metalinguism, focalizing on her personal practice of “cuttingandslicing” and on rhythm patterns obtained through an improper use of her tools of the trade (cdjs, cd player, md, me mixer). Through the years her percussion set morphed into a hybrid encompassing a dj booth, a radio dj one, a microphone station for electroacustic experiments, and a mnemonic butcher’s slab. She is a founding member of performing music units such as Jealousy Party, Semerssuaq, The Secretaries and Sistemi Audiofobici Burp. She is the director of the music label Burp Publications.

The last film I saw was “Die Bullyparade”. It`s a german comedy movie where the actor (who is also the director) Michael “Bully” Herbig is basically made 4 short movies where he revisits his old characters from his former work. Trên IndieWire, cây bút David Ehrlich từng nhận xét Us (2019) của đạo diễn Jordan Peele "là yếu tố cho thấy dòng phim kinh dị Hollywood đang nhiều thay đổi". Phim xoay quanh Adelaide (Lupita Nyong'o) - cô gái da màu trốn chạy bản sao độc ác của mình.

Jordan Peele được nhiều chuyên gia nhận xét là người tiên phong cho xu hướng người da màu là nhân vật chính của các phim kinh dị. Trước Us, anh ra mắt Get Out (2017) xoay quanh nhiếp ảnh gốc Phi Chris (Daniel Kaluuya) về quê ra mắt bố mẹ của của bạn gái da trắng. Anh nhận thấy cộng đồng da trắng nơi đây có nhiều điểm bất thường. Trả lời Deadline, Peele nhận định Get Out không chỉ là một tác phẩm mỉa mai tình tiết "người hùng da trắng" (white savior) thường thấy, mà còn là câu chuyện của sự thấu cảm về các mối quan hệ giữa con người.

Còn phim Antebellum (2020) lại có cách tiếp cận trực diện, tập trung vào sự tàn nhẫn của người da trắng với cộng đồng người da màu. Trong phim, nữ chính Veronica (Janelle Monáe) cùng nhiều người Mỹ gốc Phi hiện đại vì lý do không rõ, kẹt ở thời Nội chiến Mỹ. Họ bị ép trở thành nô lệ, phục vụ những nhu cầu man rợ của bọn chủ nô da trắng. Trang Variety nhận xét hình tượng của Janelle Monáe vừa đại diện cho sự mạnh mẽ của người Mỹ gốc Phi, vừa tôn vinh nữ quyền.

Thông điệp nữ quyền được đề cao

Phim kinh dị Mỹ thập niên 70-90 của thế kỷ trước chuộng tuyến nhân vật chính là nam giới, như trong Evil Dead, The Hitcher, Phantasm. Họ lthuộc kiểu nhân vật phóng khoáng, luôn dũng cảm đối mặt với thế lực tà ác. Riêng phụ nữ trong phim thời kỳ này bị áp đặt với những khuôn mẫu khắt khe, thường được mô tả như những cô gái yếu đuối, thoát chết nhờ may mắn.

Loạt tình tiết rập khuôn này bị đem ra mỉa mai trong phim kinh dị - hài Final Girls (2015), khi final girl "đúng chuẩn" chết từ đầu phim, còn người sống lại là "nữ phụ tóc vàng". thì nay được khắc họa mạnh mẽ và phức tạp hơn. Nữ chính của Hush (2016) là một cô gái câm điếc đối đầu với tên sát nhân bệnh hoạn. Cô chỉ có thể sống sót nhờ khôn ngoan trong tình huống hiểm nghèo. Họ không hề tầm thường, nhanh chóng lập ra kế hoạch để "săn" những kẻ hãm hại mình.

Ready or Not (2019) có Samara Weaving đóng chính tạo tình huống dở khóc dở cười : Trong khi nữ chính thành thạo sử dụng vũ khí, tính cách mạnh mẽ, bọn giết người lại vụng về và yếu đuối. Chính sự đảo ngược vai trò thợ săn - con mồi từ giữa phim đã mang đến điểm nhấn cho tác phẩm. Trên Rotten Tomatoes, nhân vật Grace của Weaving được nhiều nhà phê bình khen ngợi. Cây viết Cody Corrall nhận xét: "Weaving mang đến một làn gió mới cho tuyến nhân vật kinh điển 'final girl'".

Những nỗi sợ mới xuất hiện. Cùng sự phát triển của công nghệ, phim kinh dị nhanh chóng bắt kịp xu hướng tạo những cơn ác mộng kiểu 4.0. Like. Share. Follow (2017) xoay quanh một phụ nữ ám ảnh anh chàng Youtuber. Cô ta sẵn sàng làm tất cả để có thể tìm ra anh này. Còn nhân vật chính trong Cam (2018) là một cô gái làm nghề biểu diễn trước máy quay theo yêu cầu khách hàng một ngày bị một phiên bản khác của chính cô ăn cắp tài khoản. Chứng kiến "bản sao" diễn trò khiến Lola hoảng loạn. Phim là ẩn dụ về việc con người trong thời đại công nghệ số, không phải lúc nào cũng hiểu hết được tác động và sức ảnh hưởng của Internet.

Bên cạnh đó, các thể loại kinh dị cũ như nhà ma, truyện ma dân gian (horror folklore) cũng có nhiều đổi mới từ bối cảnh đến cách kể chuyện. Series kinh dị của Netflix The Haunting of Hill House (2018) xoay quanh chuyện nhà ma không mới, nhưng khai thác tốt khía cạnh tình cảm, đào sâu vào mối quan hệ gia đình đầy mất mát của nhà Crain. Midsommar (2019), phim kinh dị đến từ hãng A24 khiến người xem bất ngờ vì khung cảnh thơ mộng rực rỡ của ngôi làng Thụy Điển trong mùa lễ hội.

Thành công của Blumhouse và mô hình làm phim ít tốn kém đã góp phần hồi sinh thể loại này trong thập kỷ qua. Những năm 70, 80 là thời kỳ hoàng kim của phim kinh dị, đồng nghĩa với việc chúng trở thành bom tấn tại các rạp chiếu. Phim kinh dị thoái trào trong khoảng thời gian sau đó một phần bởi chi phí làm phim quá lớn trong khi đề tài rập khuôn cũ kỹ. Các phim kinh dị kinh phí thấp kiểu Blumhouse cho phép nhà làm phim thoải mái sáng tạo với quy mô nhỏ hơn. Không cần dùng đến kỹ xảo hay bối cảnh khoa trương, không thuê dàn diễn viên nổi tiếng, các phim mang thương hiệu Blumhouse vẫn đem đến nỗi sợ chân thực.

Những dấu ấn đầu tiên như Sinister (2012), The Purge (2014) hay Paranormal Activity chứng minh tính hiệu quả của mô hình này. Trong đó, loạt Paranormal Activity được xem là một trong những series kinh dị lãi nhiều nhất khi tổng doanh thu cán mốc gần 1 tỉ USD so với kinh phí làm phim trung bình là 4 triệu USD một phần. Hãng tiếp tục thành công trong các năm qua với sự mở rộng của vũ trụ kinh dị The Conjuring, các phim lẻ như Get Out (2017), Happy Death Day (2017) hay gần nhất là The Hunt (2020).
