National Library Day
National Library Day is celebrated every year on 6 April. On this day, people come together to celebrate the crucial roles that libraries and librarians play in our society. It’s also the day to reflect on the importance of reading and how essential it is to make books accessible and affordable for every reader. A well-stocked library can introduce readers to many new worlds, and helps them become more informed citizens. Libraries are also great community spaces where people can gather to exchange ideas and learn together.
History of National Library Day
Libraries aren’t a new concept — it dates back millennia. The first systematically organized library was founded in the 7th century B.C. by Assyrian ruler Ashurbanipal in Nineveh, in contemporary Iraq. It contained approximately 30,000 cuneiform tablets sorted by subject.
Since their inception, almost every great civilization has built libraries. They became great repositories of knowledge, and a few ancient libraries live on even today. The goal of these libraries was to collect knowledge and distribute it for its use in everyday life. Special importance was given to books on agriculture, architecture, medicine, art, manufacturing, war, and topics concerning the betterment of life. As the years went by, people realized the benefits of having publicly accessible centers of knowledge, and libraries became an important feature in cities and towns across the world.
As the influence of the Internet grew, many believed that there would no longer be a need for libraries, but history has proved otherwise, as libraries continue to flourish and are now more popular than ever! Not everything can be found on the Internet, and a good amount of information is still available only on paper, and despite the convenience of the world wide web, people still like to physically visit a library and spend time among books and other readers.

Emile Treville Holley, center, spring 1922, being congratulated by CCNY classmates.
Holley had been an outstanding student at high school in Flushing, and enrolled in City College when he was only 16. The following spring, Congressman Martin Ansorge nominated him for admission to the Naval Academy at Annapolis. It caused an uproar at the school.
Midshipmen (undergraduates) said he would be "condemned to Coventry" (i.e., socially ostracized). Officers (faculty) expressed sympathy for Holley but said there was no regulation under which they could compel the white students to treat him as an equal.
In any event, Holley did not pass the entrance examination. He transferred to Middlebury College and became its first African-American graduate in 1925, earning a cum laude degree with honors in philosophy and English and membership in Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to earn a master's degree from Middlebury and became a professor of English and philosophy in a number of African-American colleges and universities.

Why So Much Wealth at the Top Threatens the US Economy
Policymakers and the media are paying too much attention to how quickly the U.S. economy will emerge from the pandemic-induced recession, and not nearly enough to the nation’s deeper structural problem -- the increasing imbalance of wealth that could enfeeble the economy for years.
Seventy percent of the US economy depends on consumer spending. But wealthy people, who now own more of the economy than at any time since the 1920s, spend only a small percentage of their incomes. Lower-income people, who were in trouble even before the pandemic, spend whatever they have -- which has become very little.
In a very practical sense, the U.S. economy depends on the spending of most Americans who don’t have much to spend. That spells trouble ahead.
It’s not simply a matter of an adequate “stimulus.” The $2,000 checks contained in the American Rescue Plan have already been distributed and extra unemployment benefits will soon expire. Consumer spending will be propped up as employers add to their payrolls. Biden’s spending plans, if enacted, will also help keep consumers afloat for a time.
But the underlying imbalance will remain. Most peoples’ wages will still be too low and too much of the economy’s gains will continue to accumulate at the top, for total consumer demand to be adequate.
Years ago, Marriner Eccles, chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1934 to 1948, explained that the Great Depression occurred because the buying power of Americans fell far short of what the economy could produce. He blamed the increasing concentration of wealth at the top. In his words:
“A giant suction pump had by 1929-1930 drawn into a few hands an increasing portion of currently produced wealth. As in a poker game where the chips were concentrated in fewer and fewer hands, the other fellows could stay in the game only by borrowing. When their credit ran out, the game stopped.”
The wealthy of the 1920s didn’t know what to do with all their money, while most Americans could maintain their standard of living only by going into debt. When that debt bubble burst, the economy sunk.
History is repeating itself. The typical Americans’ wages have hardly increased for decades, adjusted for inflation. Most economic gains have gone to the top, just as Eccles’s “giant suction pump” drew an increasing portion of the nation’s wealth into a few hands before the Great Depression.
The result has been consumer spending financed by borrowing, creating chronic fragility. After the housing and financial bubbles burst in 2008, we avoided another Great Depression only because the government pumped enough money into the system to maintain demand, and the Fed kept interest rates near zero. Then came the pandemic.
The wealth imbalance is now more extreme than it’s been in over a century. There’s so much wealth at the top that the prices of luxury items of all kinds are soaring; so-called “non-fungible tokens,” ranging from art and music to tacos and toilet paper, are selling like 17th-century exotic Dutch tulips; cryptocurrencies have taken off; and stock market values have continued to rise even through the pandemic.
Corporations don’t know what to do with all their cash. Trillions of dollars are sitting idle on their balance sheets. The biggest firms have been feasting off the Fed’s corporate welfare, as the central bank obligingly holds corporate bonds that the firms issued before the recession in order finance stock buybacks.
But most people have few if any assets. Even by 2018, when the economy appeared strong, 40% of Americans had negative net incomes and were borrowing money to pay for basic household needs.
The heart of the imbalance is America’s wealthy and the corporations they own have huge bargaining power -- both market power in the form of monopolies, and political power in the form of lobbyists and campaign contributions.
Most workers have little or no bargaining power -- neither inside their firms because of the near-disappearance of labor unions, nor in politics because political parties have devolved from giant membership organizations to fundraising machines.
Biden’s “stimulus” programs are fine but temporary. The most important economic reform would be to correct this structural imbalance by reducing monopoly power, strengthening unions, and getting big money out of politics.
Until the structural imbalance is remedied, the American economy will remain perilously fragile. It will also be vulnerable to the next demagogue wielding anger and resentment as substitutes for real reform.

“A Star in Stripes”
36" x 34"   Oil on Linen
American Awards winning painter Amy Lind studied portrait painting at the Florence Academy of Art under “living master” Maureen Hyde and with Michael Grimaldi at the Bay Area Classical Artist Atelier. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her eclectic training has provided her with a unique approach and insight to realism, which is visible in both the traditional and contemporary qualities that her paintings possess.
Lind’s work has appeared in national publications, including The Art of the Portrait: Journal of the Portrait Society of America as well as three features in American Art Collector magazine. Her paintings hang in both public and private collections around the world.
On top of gallery work, Lind is sought out by many for her uncanny ability to capture the likeness and essence of those she paints. Compelled by the strikingly simple, yet infinitely complex qualities of the people and things that surround her, Lind attempts to convey a sense of life, beauty and truth through her paintings.
Hailing from the Chicagoland area, Lind now resides with her husband, a commercial producer, in Los Angeles, California where she has been juried into the prestigious California Art Club’s Mentor Membership program. She is currently represented by Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina, and will hold her fifth solo exhibition there in December 2010.

The Life of Roman Polanski
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The director of our current movie under review, Roman Polanski, is a man that has been surrounded by sadness and controversy. I think that he is a great director and an amazing creator of the visual arts, but he has a major flaw that makes me very glad he is nowhere near me. I think a statement like that deserves some explanation, but know that a lot of my take is based on opinion. I was not alive when a lot of his issues occurred so I base my opinion on news and official record statements. I will try and rely on recorded facts as much as possible and make a point to mention if something is not proven. I also encourage anyone who is interested to find out more because it is a fascinating story.
Polanski started off the in a pretty bad way as he was born in 1933 in Paris during the height of Nazi reign in Europe. He was moved to Krakow in 1937 right before the German invasion and his parents were taken in raids. He was kept alive in foster homes under an assumed identity and was lucky to survive. His mother died in Auschwitz, but he was reunited with his father after the war in 1946. Roman had quite the artistic eye and used it for both photography and filming. He attended the National Film School in Lodz, Poland and started directing short films that gained recognition. One film in particular was called Bicycle. It was a true story of a thief that tricked Polanski out of his money when purchasing a bicycle and instead beat Polanski around the head with the butt of a gun. The thief was found and eventually executed for past crimes including 3 murders.
After graduating in 1959, Polanski went to France and continued to make short films. He reported that there was a problem with xenophobia at the time since so many Polish people had dispersed around Europe after the war. He went to England and made three movies between 1965 and 1968 that gained recognition in America: Repulsion, Cul-de-sac, and Dance of the Vampires. A young woman named Sharon Tate played a role in Dance of the Vampires and Polanski fell in love. He married her in 1968 in England, and they moved to the U.S. so he could make movies in Hollywood. His first film in the states was a horror film entitled Rosemary’s Baby, one of the highest rated horror films of all time. Polanski had a beautiful young wife, a son on the way, a hit movie with more work coming, and great prospects for life in the United States.
As horrific as his formative years were, I am surprised to find myself writing that this is when Polanski’s life really went out of control. On August 9th, 1969, cult members who followed a man named Charles Manson broke into the Polanski home in Los Angeles and murdered the 8 month pregnant Sharon Tate and four friends that were at the home. Polanski had been working in London on a new film and wasn’t there that night. He says to this day that it is by far the greatest regret of his life. Remember this. It seems that some wires got crossed as far as Roman’s thinking process because his behavior really took a turn.
His films had been dark and violent in the past, but they started to have sexual undertones with more graphic nudity. His first movie back after the loss of his wife was Macbeth, a movie that was rated X at the time for graphic nudity and violence. Polanski later said that he was in a dark place, but the media would find things in his movies always looking for a story. He hated the media after the sensationalism and lack of privacy involved with the loss of his wife and son. Next came an extremely odd road trip sex comedy that was appropriately called What?. And then came his last work filmed in the United States and the film he was probably best known for, Chinatown. I don’t want to go over the film too much since it is the film currently under review for the group, but it is very dark and has an extremely down beat ending.
And then another crime was committed in Polanski’s life that would haunt while simultaneously erasing any good will the American public had for him. He was charged for drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl who modeled for him during a Vogue photoshoot. It was recorded as occurring at the Bel Air estate of Jack Nicholson. There is no question about this encounter as Polanski was arrested and confessed to the charges. He thought he was going to receive probation and timed served for a guilty plea, but the judge was reported to have changed his mind and was planning to reject the plea and give Polanski prison time for all charges. This would result in up to 50 years in jail and what amounted to life in prison. Polanski would not serve this sentence so he fled the country to France where he would not be extradited.
The charges are still pending and there is no statute of limitations on rape in the United States, so Polanski is on a list of people that if found outside of certain countries will be immediately sent back to the U.S. to face charges. He has dual citizenship in France and Poland; both countries do not extradite citizens. He went on to make one of his best works, a film called Tess, while in Europe. It was a great success and Polanski was nominated for Best Director. The film ended up winning three Academy Awards (none for Polanski). So it seemed that this acclaimed director would live in France and hope that things would blow over. He settled a civil suit in court with the girl and she went on to marry and says she forgives Polanski. But it didn’t end...
Because the woman was in the U.S. and Polanski was not, she was harassed by the press to speak out and tell her story. She reported that the media did much more harm to her and her family than Polanski did. That is a very strong statement considering the charges. Things finally cooled down somewhat when Polanski married an actress from one of his films, Emmanuelle Seignor in 1989. The couple have two kids together and things were apparently going fine in France.
Things remained well through the 90s although nothing Polanski did got much attention. It seemed he would simply live out his life quietly in France. Then in 1999, he came out with a film called The Ninth Gate that garnered attention since it starred the very popular Johnny Depp. Polanski was back on his game and he directed and produced a film called The Pianist. It stars Adrian Brody and told the story of a Polish-Jewish composer who survived the concentration camps because of goodwill received from German officers that appreciated his work. It is a masterpiece and earned Polanski the award for Best Director. He could not accept the award in person because he would be arrested, so Harrison Ford accepted it on his behalf and took it to him in France. A strange little detail about this is that The Pianist was also up for best picture, but stirrings about Polanski’s past were brought up by a competing producer to throw the award. There is no real proof of this, but the man said to have done this was quite powerful in Hollywood at the time. Ironically, that man who was said to remind people of old rape charges was none other than Harvey Weinstein. I don’t have proof of this, but it is an interesting story. One of those “I heard it is said that” kind of things from TMZ.
Anyway, these reminders had people trying to interview Polanski and his wife about the past and he basically said that people needed to move past it. This does not tend to go over very well with the American public or the legal system and Polanski was arrested while in Switzerland and held in Zurich. Public sentiment in America, France, and Poland leaned towards Polanski being sent to America to face trial. The Swiss judge denied extradition and Polanski was sent back to France. There were requests in 2014 by US courts that Poland send Polanski to stand trial since there was question concerning the conduct of the original judge in Polanski’s case. It was believed that Polanski would be given some form of probation, but it also meant he could travel. Polish courts ruled that Polanski had served his punishment and should not have to face U.S. courts again. In 2016, it was presented by Polish officials that no amount of time could account for the crime of rape, but the decision of the lower court was held.
In 2018, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences removed Polanski as a member. Strangely, that same year, they offered a membership to his wife (who loudly said no).
So the final say about how to feel about Polanski and his works lies firmly on the individual. Here is all the information about the trial that can keep it nice and ambiguous for you. The judge, the lead prosecutor, and the LA County Deputy DA at the time all admitted bias against Polanski. He would not have gotten a fair trial and would likely have ended up in prison for life. The prosecutor said later in an interview for a documentary that he was not surprised at all that Polanski left and it would have been a media circus. Polanski paid the victim almost a million dollars in civil settlement money and she said she doesn’t want to see any further prosecution. Okay. In 2017, a website run by Matan Uziel was sued by Polanski for libel when it was posted that 5 other women had come forward and accused Polanski of sexual assault. Polanski did not show up in court so Uziel was dismissed of charges. Uziel requested specifically that the cases not be dropped so that Polanski could not try and sue him at a future date. It is true that, in 2010, an English actress accused Polanski of “forcing himself” on her during filming of the movie Pirates. In 2017, a Swiss woman accused Polanski of raping her in the 70s when she was only 15. The same month, another woman accused him of assaulting her in 1975 when she was only 10. Finally, in 2019, a former actress model from France said that Polanski violently raped her at a Swiss chalet in 1975.
So what can you say about the man? His early life was tragedy and misery. The loss of his wife and child was horrific. He seemed like he was in a very bad place in the 70s. I don’t want to give credence to accusation without proof, but it can be sure that he committed at least one sexual assault of an under aged girl. He ran from his trial because he knew it would not be fair, but he was still never held accountable in a court of law for what he did. He has been forced to stay in Poland and France, but he is wealthy with a wife and kids, never seeing the jail time for what he did. And if it is true that he has committed other crimes like this, then he needs to be in jail. But could he ever get a fair day in court at this point? The man is 87 and will likely die soon, likely before any sentencing could occur. Also, how reliable is testimony from any parties about things that happened between 40-50 years ago? Everything he is accused of seems to have happened after the death of Sharon Tate and before his marriage to his current wife, so it seems like his behavior was linked to his state of mind and he is no longer in that state. That may explain things but it does not forgive them.
I don’t know. This is probably why I chose psychology instead of law enforcement or criminal justice. Trying to decide if someone has adequately paid for crimes they have committed is not my specialty. It will be a moot point soon enough because he will be dead. So what do we do with the guy? He has encountered both great suffering and great joy in his life. He as also caused great suffering and great joy. I guess it is more about how he will be remembered at this point. I would be curious to hear what others think.

Consciousness-raising
- Reading: Tales from the Lavender Menace by Karla Jay.
Karla Jay experiences consciousness-raising meetings through membership of Redstockings.
“[R]epresentatives from Redstockings talked […] Women, they insisted, needed to learn, through a process they called “consciousness-raising”, or “C-R,” that they were oppressed as a class.” p. 40 *
“Though the representatives [from Redstockings] claimed C-R wasn’t therapy, it sure sounded like therapy. Would C-R just be endless sessions in which everyone sat around complaining about the pain of being a woman? I wasn’t sure, but C-R stuck seemed worth looking into. If I made some friends and allies within the Women’s Liberation Movement, that would make C-R worthwhile. ” p. 41
The contempt in Karla Jay’s writing when it comes to women voicing their pain is a symptom of internalised misogyny. As if women had nothing to complain about, as if women were not oppressed and disrespected every day. And women have a need to discuss their pain. No good can come out of bottling it all up. If we stay silent, if we pretend everything is fine, we end up with unresolved trauma, with crippling depression, with an inability to function under misogynistic oppression. Pain is a natural reaction to our circumstances as women, and we need to speak it aloud to realise that we are not alone and that there is something systematic about our pain. How can we come to the understanding that men are oppressing women?
Upon attending her first C-R group:
“Our first C-R meeting took place in the late spring or early summer […] there were only ten women present.
We sat in a circle and listened eagerly as Kathie [Sarachild] gave us instructions. Once we had chosen a topic, we were to start with anyone who wanted to speak first as long as we avoided always beginning with the same person. Each woman was to speak on the topic and to narrate her personal experiences. The listeners were allowed to ask questions to clarify each account, but we were not to challenge the truthfulness of any statements, nor were we to psychoanalyse a woman or her motivations. In “Notes from the First Year” (1968), Redstockings Pam Allen termed this approach creating a “non-judgmental space.”
After each woman had spoken, we were then to seek the common core of our oppression as women. […] As Katie Sarachild wrote in in the 1978 Redstockings collection Feminist Revolution, “The aim of going around the room in a meeting to hear each woman’s testimony … is to help stay focused on a point, to bring the discussion back to the main subject after exploring a tangent, to get the experience of as many people as possible in the common pool of knowledge.” The idea was not to be “nice” or to provide “therapy” or to “change women.” The whole point was to develop knowledge to overthrow male supremacy.
Before we started speaking, Katie and Alix [Kates Shulman] gave us a quick history of consciousness-raising. Redstockings did not really invent C-R; the group borrowed the concept from Che Guevara and other Marxist Cuban revolutionaries who were organizing peasants in South America. They, in turn, had adapted a Communist Chinese strategy called “speaking bitterness.” When the Communists first attempted to organize the peasants in mainland China, they asked the peasants to speak about their own experiences as oppressed individuals. In the process the peasants understood that they were oppressed as a class, that their suffering was widespread, and that the masters profited from their pain. These understandings galvanized the peasants to revolt.
The same technique, Redstockings assured us, would liberate women. When the world’s majority realised the degree to which we were enslaved, we would rise up and overthrow the patriarchy.” p. 50-52
The basic idea of consciousness-raising meetings is to share personal lived experiences as women and then reflect on what the common thread, the common denominators are. It ensures that theory is not dry and based on lofty concepts, but on the contrary that it is directly derived from the lived reality of women.
“One of the idea of consciousness-raising was to give power and space to the “quiet woman”.” p. 52
And as women we are more likely to speak up in an environment of only women who have also shared their experience with the topic at hand. We know we will be listened to and heard, which is already a great step compared to other environment we are usually confronted to.
“But the changes wrought by C-R went well beyond my name. C-R totally altered my vision of who I was and where I was going. It gave me a political tool, a class analysis through which I could (re)view and come to terms with my Dickensian childhood. I trusted C-R in a way I would have never been able to accept psychoanalysis as a process for understanding my own life. Psychiatry had failed my mother, in part because she was a woman.” p.57
In short, consciousness-raising meetings are a way to bring women to a deeper understanding of the root causes of their pain and experience. It allows women to come personally to the conclusion that male oppression is indeed strangling their lives. As such, it is a very valuable tool, as it does not antagonise the participants with presentation of feminist theory as dogma, but invites women to draw their own conclusions. And the methods learnt during consciousness-raising meetings can later be applied to all walks of life, taking testimonies from writings and arts made by women, exploring subjects not broached in meetings, …
* Note that this passage goes on as follows: “Although Redstockings defined men in Marxist terms as a social class that oppressed women, they seemed bent on struggling with men rather than abandoning them”, definitely marking Redstockings as a reformist group.
Also: Karla Jay mentions her distrust of psychiatry. A few interesting posts on the subject linked here.

Ep 205: Terry Carnation's "Dark Air" and Rich Hatem
“Imagine the universe, compressed on the head of a pin…”
– Scott’s remembrance of a Carl Sagan quote, which, turns out, probably originates from a parody impression of Carl Sagan
Description:
We have a very special guest joining us tonight, metaphysical "astralnaut," philosopher of the liminal, "Pope of the Paranormal," and host of the AM Radio talk show Dark Air, Terry Carnation. Terry first got his start in the paranormal radio genre when unexpectedly thrust into taking over for another show. While working as a late-night rock n' roll Disc Jockey for an FM station in Buffalo, NY, in 1992, Reginald Wilcox, the host of the paranormal call-in show that aired after Terry's slot was mysteriously murdered while Terry was in the bathroom... or so he claims. In his unflappable sense of duty, apparently stronger than his sense of legal obligation, Terry immediately took over the role of consigliere for listeners stupefied by the supernatural. And in Terry's words, "that's how a legend was created." Now, after a three-year hiatus, Terry Carnation returns with a new podcast, also called Dark Air, available starting April 1, 2021, wherever podcasts are given away for free. While you may not have heard of him, there will be something uneasily familiar about his voice and visage. And the audience will come to know his strange power for tearing off the head of disbelief and reaching down deep into our souls to yank out the viscera of our darkest fears and mysteries. Wrapped around our interview with Terry, our good buddy Rich Hatem joins us once again to discuss his latest adventures and projects. We'll also con him into playing our version of a game show, in the spirit of America's NPR radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! and Britain's Would I Lie to You? We'll tell Rich three outrageous paranormal stories, and he has to guess which one is fake. Please join us for an episode of inscrutable levity.

Essential Avengers: King-Size Annual Avengers #11: In Honor’s Name!
Tumblr media
August, 1982
“Why do the AVENGERS battle the Defenders?”
I dunno, man. Is it Tuesday again?
“And who is the mystery woman Nebulon has fallen for?”
Nebulona? She’s clearly just him but a woman.
Oh, hey Beast. So this is where you got to after quitting the Avengers.
Soooo.... Annuals, amirite? Pain in my butt. I actually forgot to cover this one and #12 is going to be somewhat plot relevant soon so I’ll shove this in wherever.
Its a blast from the past of the previous year.  Back when the Avengers were fantastic but only numbered four: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Wasp.
And the Defenders seem to number many so this isn’t a very fair fight at all.
This issue starts with a PRELUDE
Tumblr media
(J. M. DeMatteis again? Is this going to be weird?)
Nebulon the Celestial Man and damn fine dresser fades onto a hilltop shaking his fist and yelling that someone can’t do something to him.
Nebulon is mostly a Defenders villain and the major thing I know about him is that he’s supposedly exceptionally handsome but the handsomeness is a ruse and that the Squadron Sinister stopped helping him destroy the world once because they discovered he wasn’t as handsome as he was letting on.
Goes to show where their priorities lie. Also, the experience was so jarring that the evil Nighthawk decided to join the Defenders much to their chagrin.
So basically I know nothing about Nebulon. Hi, Nebulon.
Tumblr media
An angry yelly fish head with the Rocky Horror Picture Show lips inside its fish lips shows up (I think this is what Nebulon realy looks like) and tells Nebulon that his punishment for constantly dicking with Earth is to be stranded on Earth with his powers reduced to half and stuck in his handsome-to-some-but-grotesque-to-fish body.
Okay. That clears things up.
Although I wish all of space would stop using Earth as their place to dump stuff or exile people. Its bad enough when Asgard does it. Its worse enough when there’s a whole crossover about all of space deciding to make Earth its supermax jail. And its a medium amount enough here.
But apparently the shouty fish people have a Prime Directive and Nebulon keeps breaking it, specifically on Earth. But a Prime Directive that also lets them dump troublemakers on planets where they’ve been troublemaking.
Nebulon tries to defend himself that, hey, Earth makes you do crazy stuff. But the yell fish is hearing nothing of it and just tells Nebulon to kill himself if he doesn’t want to be on Earth so bad.
... Eesh.
In his rage at being stranded on Earth, Nebulon teleports inside the Sanctum Sanctorum and starts yelling at Wong.
Wong tells him, dude, Dr Strange isn’t even here. So Nebulon starts beating up Wong.
How dare you, sir. Wong is a great guy!
Nebulon: “Then Wong shall die -- just as your master shall soon die -- and his accursed Defenders with him! They shall all pay for bringing this tragedy down on my head! For, if they had not risen up to thwart me. If they -- if they... Listen to me. Listen to the words of -- a fool! Forgive me, Wong! Neither you, Strange, nor the Defenders are responsible! The blame belongs solely to -- NEBULON!”
And then he teleports away, no doubt leaving Wong very confused.
CHAPTER 1: IN HONOR’S NAME!
Tumblr media
Later, Thor flies over the Himalaya mountains and over the chapter title.
He has come for some peace and quiet sitting on a mountain away from the bustle of mortals but what does he find but someone already in his thinking spot!
Thor lands to see who would be sitting on a mountain with no pants on and its Nebulon, of course.
But I have to say. He’s sitting and hugging his knees. That’s advanced brood. That’s, in fact, verging on pout.
Although lets not let the fact that Thor flies out to the Himalayas to be alone sometimes slip on by uncommented.
Thor asks what brings the guy out here and Nebulon has a dramatic exile speech ready to go.
Nebulon: “For hours now I have sat, lost in thought, pondering that very question! What is it that brings any creature to the depths of despair, the edge of doom, but... himself?”
And since he senses a kindred spirit in Thor, one who is as different from the Earthly masses as Nebulon is, he unloads his full story onto Thor’s ears.
Upon hearing all about this dude who tried to take over or sell the world multiple times, Thor is like ‘this guy has got to meet the Avengers!’
Nebulon thinks Avengers sounds like Defenders and he’s not into that but Thor says that the Avengers are way cooler than the Defenders.
(Ooooh, shots fired, Thor)
Thor: “No, my friend -- there are none in all creation to compare with the Avengers! A hardier band of warriors hath ne’er been assembled! Where else could a god walk among mortals and find -- his equals?”
If Nebulon has truly repented of his past deeds, the Avengers will help him make a home on Earth.
Tumblr media
And with a manly armclasp, like the one from Predator, Nebulon accepts and Thor takes him AWAY!
While the person who looks like Nebulon but a woman and with better boots watches them go and disappears in a bright flash of light.
CHAPTER 2
Yes, already.
Tumblr media
“Avengers Mansion... Over the years, many fantastic beings have walked through the doors of this august Manhattan townhouse: Gods, mutants, androids... even a were-woman. But, of all these unique individuals, few -- if any -- have been more honored, more respected... More willing to serve the cause of freedom, wherever the place, whenever the time.. than the living legend whose only powers are his wits, his daring, and his years of hard-won skill... Captain America!”
And we see Cap leaping and gamboling about the exercise room, exercising.
Cap: “Ah -- there’s nothing like a good workout to make a man feel truly alive! It might pay to run through it once more, though --- my timing was a hair off on the parallel bars!”
Wasp comes in to... well, its Wasp. She comes to eye the eye candy and flirt a little, in a friendly fashion.
Wasp: “I see you’re here early for our meeting -- as usual! Don’t you ever slow down?”
Cap: “I seem to remember catching a few winks back in 1942 or so!”
Wasp: “Why, Cap -- that was two jokes in a row! I didn’t think you had it in you!”
Cap: “Oh, come on, Jan -- I’m not really that serious a guy, am I?”
Wasp: “I was just kidding, handsome.”
Cap: “Oh.”
Heh.
So, Thor called a super special emergency meeting of the Avengers to introduce his cool new friend.
Iron Man (secretly Tony Stark, true believers) is a little tense about the meeting because he had to cancel three business conferences, an address to foreign stockholders, and two dates.
Geez, for one meeting? You ever consider your calendar is way too packed, Tony?
Thor arrives with his cool, new pal and introduces the Avengers to NEBULON -- THE CELESTIAL MAN!
And Iron Man lunges out of his chair to get into better pointing distance.
Tumblr media
Thor: “What irks thee, comrade? Why art thou so angered?”
Iron Man: “What irks me, Thor? He does! Haven’t you ever bothered to study our computer-file on alien threats? Your ‘newfound ally’ almost totalled the Earth -- several times!”
Nebulon: “Don’t you see, Thor? They react as I predicted they would!”
Also, geez. I know Tony is frustrated about all the schedule juggling he’s had to do but in this and the Black Knight two-parter he’s a lot ruder to Thor than you’d expect considering how close they are.
Some writers just don’t get the Avengers, I guess.
Cap and Wasp try to get Iron Man to calm down.
Wasp: “I’m sure there’s a darn good reason why Thor brought Nebulon here -- isn’t there?”
She’s downright staring daggers at him when she asks that.
We’ve jumped back in time a little from where I was covering but Jan is still the chairperson of the Avengers. It happened right when she returned from her divorce related hiatus and this four person group has to take place post-Tigra leaving and pre-membership drive.
So, she’s the boss and she just gave angry boss eyes at Thor. And Thor did his default squinting always-looks-pissed look back at her.
Thor tells Nebulon’s whole sad story off-panel.
And damn if it doesn’t hit the Avengers right where they live.
Wasp tells him that they all know what it means to lose something precious “whether it’s an entire world... or the love of one person -- it makes no difference! It hurts to suddenly find yourself -- alone!”
And Captain America sympathizes because when he was defrosted after twenty years, it was like a strange new world!
They’re both on team ‘give Nebulon a chance!’
Iron Man is more reluctant but decides to give Nebulon one chance.
Then the Defenders bust in.
Tumblr media
Beast, Valkyrie, Silver Surfer, and Gargoyle who is not Etrigan at all.
And they’re here to kick Nebulon’s ass. Which is entirely fair considering that they’ve been the ones who keep having to stop Nebulon’s planschemes.
Since the Avengers seem to not be beating up Nebulon, obviously they’ve all been mind controlled. Nebulon is clearly planning to blow up half the Earth and use the Avengers to control the rest.
Cap: ‘what’
Silver Surfer: ‘HE’S MAKING A HOSTILE MOVE!’
And then Silver Surfer blasts the floor, sending all of the Avengers sprawling every which way.
MEANWHILE, IN SPACE
Tumblr media
There’s a huge spaceship, in space. And within the huge spaceship in space, the lady who looks like a lady Nebulon watches the fight on a screen and cries.
Hey, I get it. Doing the Avengers vs Defenders Again But Worse makes me sad too.
CHAPTER 3
Tumblr media
See, that’s more of the length for a chapter. You could learn something from chapter 2, chapter 1.
Anyway, the clock winds back a little for the Defender’s side of the story.
Valkyrie returns to the Sanctum Sanctorum in a good mood and also on a flying horse.
For a long while, Valkyrie’s status quo is that she was inhabiting the body of Barbara Norris, a woman that Dr Strange accidentally drove insane. But she’s gotten her original Asgardian body back so she’s stronger than ever and also not bodyjacking someone else.
She flies into the window, alarming Gargoyle, Beast, and Wong.
Gargoyle tearfully flies up and hugs Valkyrie saying that he thought she was leaving for Asgard forever.
Hey, um, who dis?
-wiki- Ok so he’s an elderly man who was trapped in a gargoyle body by some demons who he broke an agreement with. Cool, cool, cool. I would have guessed much younger based on how he acts here.
Valkyrie also smooshes Beast’s hand when he gives her a handshake hello, because she’s much buffer than she was when she left. Also, she talks more like Thor.
Valkyrie: “I am, at long last, the true Valkyrie! What more need be said?”
Then the Lady Nebulon teleports in and introduces herself as Supernalia. She tells the Defenders that she’s here to save the world from the evil of NEBULON!
Beast doesn’t recognize the name but Valkyrie definitely does. What with all the existing history that I keep alluding to.
Supernalia: “Indeed! I am a bounty hunter from Nebulon’s homeworld come to bring him to justice! He has fled to your Earth, taking sanctuary among the so-called Avengers! Using celestial mind control, he has usurped their will, and -- after decimating part of your world with four pre-set anti-matter bombs -- he plans to use the Avengers to take control of the surviving population!”
Beast goes ‘uh cool story but i’mma verify this real quick by ringing them up’
But then he remembers he already did do that and they were very rude to him!
He remembers this interaction very clearly even though it didn’t happen at all.
Tumblr media
Ironically, the Defenders are the ones who are being mind-controlled into accusing other people of being mind-controlled. Yes, I’m pretty sure that’s irony.
Wong suddenly remembers that Nebulon rushed in the previous night but he can’t remember how that interaction actually went.
AH HAH, decides Beast. Clearly proof that Nebulon mind-controlled Wong. Lets go half-cocked everyone.
No, no. Beast decides they’ll need more than just the three of them and wonders who they should call to bolster their numbers to a whole four Defenders. Dr Strange is busy chasing Daimon Hellstrom and Namor soooo...
Valkyrie suggests Silver Surfer because he kicks ass but they have no way to get in contact with him.
Supernalia goes hey allow me.
Supernalia: “Although my planet’s laws forbid direct involvement with alien cultures -- and thus my need of you Defenders -- I can help!”
And she baps Valkyrie in the forehead and instantly transmissions Silver Surfer right to the Sanctum to his existential annoyance.
Silver Surfer: What force has swept me halfway ‘round the world? Who toys with -- the Silver Surfer?”
Valkyrie explains off-panel because this is very much “let me explain! No, there is too much. Let me sum up” kind of day.
CHAPTER 4
Tumblr media
We cut back to right after the Silver Surfer knocked everyone on their ass with a warning shot.
Thor: “Surfer -- art thou mad?! Thy ‘warning’ came close to slaying us all!”
Thor gets up to kick Norrin’s rad ass but Valkyrie grabs his arm. She tries to convince him to trust her that Nebulon is controlling the Avengers. She appeals to their shared history, their shared love.
Thor: “Brunnhilde -- thou art truly the one blinded... by thine own prejudice! Because, once, Nebulon stood as thine enemy -- thou takest him for that again!”
Valkyrie: “Thunderer -- once I loved thee -- but now I see -- that thou art -- A FOOL!”
Then she just up and tosses him.
Tumblr media
It’s pretty great.
Thor just rights himself midtoss by helicoptering his hammer and tells Valkyrie that she’s the fool. And also that because she fucking threw him, now he knows that its her group that are under some kind of control.
Nebulon starts yelling too because he’s not going to sit by while other people fight his battle so he’s like ‘come on if you’re hard enough, dickfenders’ and Beast is like ‘ok.’
Wasp, team leader, thinks Thor is onto something re: the Defenders being against some kind of influence and asks Iron Man to create a distraction so the Avengers can skedaddle.
Iron Man has the perfect distraction and fires the UNIBEEEEAM. At his own roof, collapsing it on the Defenders.
Iron Man: “Wait till Tony gets the bill for this!”
... so depending on the time frame, either only Nebulon or both him and Wasp are the only ones who don’t know Iron Man is Tony so who are you putting on a show for, Tony?
Or maybe you’re just so used to grousing about the Avengers breaking your shit that you do it even when you do it.
Anyway, since Thor has a hunch that the Defenders are being controlled, he decides that the best thing is to teleport somewhere safe and make a plan.
So Nebulon teleports himself and the Avengers to the Himalayas where he and Thor first met.
The effort nearly kills Nebulon, since his powers have been curtailed by the yell fish. But now they have some space.
Wasp: “And don’t think we don’t appreciate it, Nebulon! But couldn’t you have zapped us to a more temperate climate -- like the Bahamas... or the French Riviera? It mean, it’s COLD here!”
Cap hopes that the Defenders won’t find them somewhere so remote and isolated but Thor, whose idea this was by the by, isn’t so sure because they don’t know who is pulling the strings.
Iron Man: “Good point! Are we dealing with one of our old foes -- one of the Defenders’ -- or perhaps someone out for Nebulon’s head! Let’s face it: we’ve got a wide field to choose from!”
Annnnnnd thennnnn, the Defenders just show up anyway so trying to get some breathing room was a waste of Nebulon’s efforts.
Beast: “Cap, Thor, Iron Man, Jan! You’re all my friends... more than that -- you’re family! So why won’t you believe me when I tell you that this nut’s gonna wipe the whole planet out in a matter of hours! Please -- hand him over or --.”
Nebulon: “Or... NOTHING!”
Then he shoots an energy blast at the Defenders.
Tumblr media
Which sadly arcs to the ground with a SHOOOM! and does little more than splash some snow on the Defenders.
But awwww, Beast considers the Avengers family! Shame that once the X-Men pull him back into their orbit, he only hangs out with them and decides never to ask the Avengers for help, either when Professor X gets shot by Stryfe or when trying to solve the Legacy Virus.
I think that social group is a bad influence on Beast. He never broke time or pretended to be gay to dunk on his ex when he was an Avenger. He just got high, practiced polyamory, and yukked it up with his bffsie Wonder Man.
Anyway, Silver Surfer gets up and disses Nebulon for his sad laser blast.
Silver Surfer: “Like all who seek conquest, Nebulon -- you refuse to recognize truth! You alter reality to serve your own malefic ends! But the power you no wield, tyrant, is as nothing compared to that which you once had! You are weak -- as Supernalia said you would be!”
Nebulon is aghast to hear that Supernalia is the one behind all of this. And also aghast when Gargoyle shoots a bio-mystic bolt at him.
Apparently, Gargoyle can shoot bio-mystic bolts. Are there mystic bolts that are not bio? Shrug.
CHAPTER 5
Tumblr media
Hey, some of these chapter divisions feel arbitrary. We go from the fight to the fight. At least some other chapter divisions had scene or temporal shifts.
Cap begs the Defenders to fight off Supernalia’s influence. Or the Avengers will fight off Supernalia’s influence for them. Probably via punches.
For whatever reason, this makes Valkyrie go stickycaps.
Tumblr media
Valkyrie: “The hour of Earth’s doom draws ever closer -- and, to prevent that doom, we will do whate’er we must! wHaTeVeR wE mUsT!”
Mystifying.
Anyway, with both sides thinking the other side are dumb easily mind-controlled doodoo heads, they both get to the slugfest that neither side wants but thinks there’s no other way to reach the other side but by punching some sense into them.
Tumblr media
This panel feels like a microcosm of a lot of Marvel events.
And as this goes on Nebulon just watches the fight with calculating eyes.
I’m sure that’s fine.
Thor and Valkyrie continue sparring verbally, as well as with punches. Valkyrie asks how Thor can let Midgard be destroyed when they both love it so much. And Thor is like ‘for the last time, there’s no danger except from your mysterious new golden pal’
Meanwhile, the Defender’s mysterious new golden pal Supernalia is monitoring the fight from her spaceship. And monitoring the Defenders’ brainwaves.
Thor is actually making Valkyrie doubt. And Supernalia can’t have that.
Tumblr media
Supernalia: “I cannot afford to lose control of the Defenders now! For honor’s sake, their rage must grow! And more -- they must retain a psychological surety that cannot be breached! In Valkyrie’s case, the introduction of something... familiar -- something to increase her confidence -- would seem appropriate!”
So Supernalia teleports Valkyrie’s sweet flying horse Aragorn to just. Appear on the Himalayas. Between Valkyrie and Thor.
Valkyrie doesn’t know how her horse suddenly appeared but she’s not going to look a gift teleporting winged horse in the mouth. She jumps on his back and takes to the air.
Thor gets pissed and hammerflings himself after her.
While Thor is chasing Valkyrie around the sky, Iron Man squares up with Silver Surfer.
Silver Surfer tells Iron Man that “you see to halt one who has outraced comets! Soared faster than light itself!” and basically that he rules, Iron Man sucks. And then to prove it, he blasts Iron Man with the power cosmic.
Just that one attack nearly tore Iron Man apart and he’s pretty sure that Silver Surfer was holding back. Oof, that’s some power gap.
BUT MAYBE just maybe if Iron Man puts all of his might into one staggering punch...
Tumblr media
It’ll do jack shit to the Surfer.
Well, damn.
Gargoyle fights Wasp but says its not proper for a man to fight a lady. Wasp points out ‘hey you’re fighting me anyway so maybe someone is making you do it.’
Gargoyle: ‘.... NUH UH’
Cool. Good talk.
Supernalia: “This Gargoyle is too... soft! His mind accepts -- but his heart rebels! These beings are not like us! Their minds are filled with too many questions! Their souls overflow with conflicting emotions!”
I can’t believe humans (and Asgardians) have too many feelings and emotions to be easily controlled.
Well, I can believe. It really checks out.
So Supernalia increases the celestial mindwaves to shore up her control, even if it means burning out the Defenders.
Rude.
Thor blasts Valkyrie off of Aragorn with lightning and then catches her, saying he won’t let her fall. So, reasonably enough, Valkyrie elbows him in the face for treating her like a damsel.
They both fall toward the ground. Aragorn catches Valkyrie and Thor catches... a cosmic bolt from Silver Surfer.
You had one job, Iron Man.
And that job was to sneak up on Silver Surfer while he’s self-flagellating for doing a shameful opportunistic attack on Thor.
Iron Man uses those... hip... power pod... things. To zap Silver Surfer’s temples and siphon off some of his power.
And with that power, Iron Man tips a chunk of the mountain on top of Silver Surfer.
This doesn’t keep the Surfer down for long. Despite the fact that trying to contain the incredible surfing energies he absorbed threatens to damage his armor, Iron Man absorbs more when Silver Surfer blasts him, to try to turn the energy back at the Surfer.
Instead, they both explode.
Double KO.
Elsewhere in the fight, Gargoyle blasts Wasp with his bio-mystic bolts, knocking her into the snow.
Gargoyle panics because his bio-mystic bolts are supposed to drain off a fraction of a person’s life-force, not up and kill them.
So Gargoyle shouldn’t have been surprised when Wasp pops back up and zaps him in the chin. And Wasp shouldn’t have been surprised when Gargoyle zaps her back.
She passes out. But so does Gargoyle, to his confusion. His hide should be tough enough to take a truckload of punishment, yet he suddenly feels so weak.
I mean. Wasp is strong enough to blow up a house with her own zaps. But this is probably intended to be Supernalia’s mind control burning him out.
I choose to believe that its Wasp’s cool house-blowing-up might. She’s kicked bigger ass than Gargoyle.
Wasp’s defeat scream momentarily distracts Cap from where he’s fisticuffsing with Beast.
Beast: “Holy cow! I hope she’s not badly hurt!”
Cap: “You hope she’s not -- ?! You can still say that after all you’ve done today? After all the pain this Supernalia has driven the Defenders to cause?”
Beast: “We’ve caused? You’re the ones harboring the lunatic with the anti-matter bombs --.”
There’s no guilt-tripping some people.
Cap throws his mighty shield but Beast must not have heard the song because he not only doesn’t yield, he also catches the shield with his feets.
Then he sleds on it down a snowy incline and tackles Cap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beast: “It’s time we quit all this clowning around!”
Cap: “That’s right, Hank! This is serious business -- so hit me! Hit me, blast you! HIT ME!”
Beast: “Hey! wHaT tHe HeCk Am I dOiNg?”
Cap: “Coming to your senses, I hope!”
Beast realizes that Cap dropped his guard and let Beast beat the shit out of him on purpose, let Beast almost kill him.
Cap: “You’re no killer, Hank! And no force, however great, could make you kill! I counted on that fact to snap you out of it!”
Wow, good going, Cap!
Out of everyone here, you’re the only one who successfully snapped anyone out of anything. Although I think Wasp coulda if she had played possum and let Gargoyle think he killed her instead of popping up to zap him.
But Cap has insight into Hank. That probably helped.
Me and Jan know jack about Gargolye.
CHAPTER 6
Tumblr media
With exactly two people conscious but not fighting anymore, Nebulon is like ‘hah eat shit Supernalia’
So Supernalia appears.
Beast feels like he’s about to keel over even though he beat the shit out of Cap and Cap feels weaker too. They blame Supernalia because its very easy to blame someone whose fault everything is.
But Supernalia blames Nebulon.
Nebulon slams a drama bomb in response.
Nebulon: “Do not seek to reclaim the upper hand with more lies, Supernalia! Such sophistry is unbecoming in... my wife!”
I heard that in Borat voice and I hate myself a little.
But now that Supernalia’s relation to Nebulon has been established, Nebulon is like ‘but why are you trying to ruin my exile?’
Supernalia: “You were convicted of high crimes, my husband -- and the sentence was a choice of honorable death by your own hand... or ignominious exile! In 500 generations, none of our people have ever chosen exile! All have proudly faced extinction! But you, lacking courage, brought shame upon your wife and children!”
HE HAS KIDS??
Anyway, she came to Earth to just. Kinda. Kill him. To restore honor to their family.
But when she got there, she found that he had already made friends and decided well I need some pawns of my own. So I can kill him.
Nebulon isn’t really impressed because in his one day as an exile, he’s had some epiphanies.
Nebulon: “Unlike you, I have traveled far across this universe! I have learned to see in new ways! Our concepts of honor are archaic! Our laws are cruel! I now dare to dream higher dreams, for I have learned what it means to have -- friends!”
Supernalia: “I have been your friend... and much more! Since our childhood betrothal have I stood by you -- despite your constant avoidance of responsibilities! Despite your failure to achieve glory or rank!”
Oof, imagine if your childhood friend and spouse told you that being exiled on Earth taught him what friendship really means.
I have to imagine that Cap and Beast are just listening to this like ‘god why do cosmic people always have to dump their relationship baggage on Earth?’
Supernalia then tries to tell Beast and Cap that Actually Nebulon is up to no good.
Beast is like yeah nice try.
But this time Supernalia has actual proof evidence.
Tumblr media
She dispels the invisibility cloak hiding the Ennui Device that Nebulon left on a prior trip to Earth and is now using to drain energy from the Avengers and Defenders to beef himself up.
Now, Cap and Beast turn to Nebulon like ‘but buddy, why?’ and also to punch him a little bit, in a friendly manner.
Nebulon: “I did what I had to -- to survive! Believe me -- I truly wanted the friendship you offered -- but observing the unfolding battle, I realized I could never find peace on this or any world -- without the POWER!”
And this rude boy who doesn’t understand what friendship means punches both Cap and Beast.
Beast sprawls right at Supernalia’s feet completely burned out and goes hey feel like stepping in??
Supernalia: “I can do nothing directly, Beast. I am not permitted to interfere!”
Beast: “You... stupid... self-deluding... idiots! Don’t you understand that all this has happened... because you already have... interfered?!?!”
Supernalia: “So           I              have!”
And since now she’s done the big bad transgress of the Prime Directive, she decides that unlike her shitbird husband, she’s going to do the honorable thing and kill herself.
Tumblr media
I. Have no words. At this entire exchange.
Its too much.
Nebulon is distraught so slaps the gun out of her hand and begs her to instead of killing herself, not do that. She could stay on Earth and rule at his side!
This latest bout of cosmic interpersonal drama gives Cap the opportunity to muster his strength and throw his mighty shield.
It deflects the ray emitter of the Ennui Device so it hits Nebulon instead of the Avengerdefenders.
Except, oops, the Ennui Beam was calibrated for “humanoid physio-psycho energies” so instead of draining his energy, the Ennui Beam just straight up starts killing Nebulon.
Amazing how you can stretch vocabulary to encompass humans, Asgardians, mutants, power cosmic imbued Zenn-Lavians, and whatever demonic biz is going on with the Gargoyle.
It sure is amazing how it affects all these different things as intended but its accidentally fatal in a way that will help wrap up the story.
Beast wet noodle jumps to try to redirect the beam and save Nebulon but Supernalia shoves him out of the way and then jumps into the beam herself.
Supernalia: “Thus, I join my husband -- in oblivion!”
Geez, when she sets her mind to killing herself, she sticks with it
.__.
Nebulon agrees that Actually This is the Right and Correct Course for them, I guess because couple counseling is a hassle.
Then the Ennui Device overloads and explodes and Nebulon and Supernalia turn to their true forms of giant weird fish people with Rocky Horror Picture Show lips inside fish lips.
Tumblr media
Beast laments that Supernalia didn’t just let him save both of them but she’s like ‘HONORRR’ and then dies.
Thor: “I called Nebulon friend and he decieved me! Yet now -- Thor mourns his passing!”
Silver Surfer: “What manner of beings were they, to cherish honor so much... and value life so little?”
Cap: “Perhaps, Surfer -- not so different from us. Not so different -- at all!”
Okay, shut up your face, Cap.
First off, I don’t think much of an honor code that says its okay to mind control and lie to people and use them as pawns in a way that could kill them but then also goes ‘this is an honorable death’ when you stupid yourself to death.
And neither should you! Don’t put a poetic, poignant spin on things! This whole affair was a weird couples spat that two space weirdos forced you to participate in!
Follow @essential-avengers because I went back and covered an inconsequential annual and now I can’t go back and not do that. I wasted my time for you. Also, like and reblog. I need positive reinforcement. It makes me happy.

HANS LOVES LUCY
July 10, 1987
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
By CAROL HOWARD News-Review staff writer
Hans Borger loves Lucy.
Lucille Ball, that is.
The 23-year-old Petoskey man, who wasn't even around for Lucy's golden era during the 1950s, collects books, record albums, videocassette tapes, photos, T-shirts and mugs, all dedicated to his beloved Lucy.
For any cave dwellers out there who may not know of whom we speak, Lucille Ball is one of the best known comediennes in America. Along with her husband, the late Desi Arnaz, the two reigned as queen and king of comedy on their outrageously successful television show, "I Love Lucy," during the 1950s. The show also made stars of Vivian Vance and William Frawley who played Lucy and Desi's landlords, Ethel and Fred Mertz.
After she divorced Arnaz in 1960, Lucy went on to star in her own sitcoms, "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy" in the 1960s and 1970s.
Borger, who is news director at WMBM, a Petoskey radio station, said his love for the zany redhead goes back to his after-school days.
"When I was a kid, I'd come home from school and watch reruns," Borger said. "Shows like "Lucy" and the "Brady Bunch.'"
But he didn't start collecting Florence Henderson memorabilia, he chose Lucy. It must have been the storylines, he said.
"You can watch it (the show) over and over and still find it funny," he said. "Somehow you know everything's going to turn out all right in the end. And you go away with a smile when the show is over. You can't say that with very many other programs."
"The chemistry among the four (actors) was something that made the show the hit that it was," Borger said. "And, as Lucy says, they were lucky.”
Borger turns up his nose at current comedy programs.
"In the 1980s they try and make comedy shows about things like AIDS. That doesn't seem very comical."
Borger also admits, because of Lucy, he loves things from the 1940s and 1950s.
"It kind of influenced my whole way of thinking," he said. "I love the music of (that era). I kind of live in the past."
When Borger has time off, he says he'll kick back and watch an old Lucy episode or one of her game show appearances on his videocassette recorder. It's still a daily routine, he said.
If Borger gets tired of watching Lucy, he can read about her in the Lucy library he has accumulated.
He has a dozen or more books about her life. (She's 75 now). He gets newsletters from the "We Love Lucy" fan club, where he's maintained membership for the past 10 years. He keeps up scrapbooks with Lucy newspaper clippings and magazine articles.
He makes no bones about his devotion: "I could talk about this forever," he said.
He's never met Lucy in person, but he did meet Desi Arnaz near Detroit in 1976 during an autograph session.
"He was signing his autobiography. There he was with a glass of beer and a big, fat cigar," Borger said.
Borger said a controversial topic under discussion among Lucy fans and anyone interested in television history is whether or not the 179 "I Love Lucy" episodes will be colorized. (1)
"I feel it would be great," Borger said. "(I think) if Desi could have filmed them in color, he would have."
Hmmm, that means Lucy's red hair would be red.
There's also an all-points-bulletin out for the "lost" pilot episode of "I Love Lucy," Borger said. Borger's read about it and knows why it's a hot item. (2)
"For one thing, there were no Mertzes," he said. "And it wasn't Ricky and Lucy Ricardo, it was Larry and Lucy Lopez. But they found out there was already a bandleader named Lopez so they had to change the name."
Does Borger have some favorite episodes? "Oh, just like everybody else, I like the Vitameatavegamin show (where Lucy films a commercial for an alcohol-laced tonic until she gets drunk)," Borger said. "And the one called "Sentimental Anniversary" where wind up celebrating their anniversary in their closet. And the one where Lucy tells Ricky she's going to have a baby."
Borger said he plans to keep on collecting all he can about Lucy. "As long as I have the money."
And what if she shows up again on the tube? Will Borger give her another try?
"If she was just standing there, doing nothing, I'd watch it," he said. "If you are a diehard fan, that's just the way it goes."
Lucy and Ricky Lucy Quiz
So you claim to be an "I Love Lucy" fan? Here's a test to just see how much you really know (answers at end of test):
1. What is Lucy Ricardo's maiden name?
2. When Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel go to Hollywood, for whom does Lucy disguise herself with a long, putty nose?
3. Where was Ethel Mertz born? (Hint: it's in New Mexico.)
4. Name the movie Ricky supposedly contracted to film in Hollywood.
5. One day a group called "The Friends of the Friendless" consoled Lucy in a park. Why was Lucy upset?
6. What day of the week does Lucy and Ethel's women's club, the Wednesday Afternoon Fine Arts League, meet?
7. In the famous candy-making episode, what unusual gifts do Ricky and Fred buy their wives after the two women are fired?
8. What musical instrument could Little Ricky play?
9. What is Lucy Ricardo's middle name?
10. What was the plot of the first episode aired?
ANSWERS: 1. MacGillicuddy; 2. William Holden; 3. Albuquerque; 4. Don Juan; 5. No one remembered her birthday; 6. Friday; 7. 5 pound boxes of candy; 8. Drums; 9. Esmeralda; 10. Lucy thinks Ricky is planning to murder her.

FOOTNOTES FROM THE FUTURE
Tumblr media
(1) In the early 1980s, the Museum of Broadcasting (now the Paley Center for Media) began actively searching for the long-lost “I Love Lucy” pilot. During the 1970s all traces of the pilot had disappeared; not even Desi Arnaz or Lucille Ball owned or knew where to find a copy. In December 1989, a film print was found in the possessions of the late Pepito Perez, who had appeared in the pilot as a clown. Pepito’s widow, Joanne Perez, had read about the search for the pilot in TV Guide and recalled that her husband had been given a copy. CBS aired the pilot as an hour-long special hosted by Lucie Arnaz on Monday (the same day of the week “I Love Lucy” traditionally aired), April 30, 1990. Over 30 million viewers tuned in.
Tumblr media
(2) “The ‘I Love Lucy’ Christmas Show” was the first episode CBS aired colorized on December 18, 1989. The ‘wraparound’ segments (the non-flashback parts) were broadcast in the original black and white, but were also colorized starting in 1990. Currently, in addition to the Christmas episode, there are 14 fully-colorized “I Love Lucy” episodes (out of 179):
“Lucy Does A TV Commercial”
“L.A. at Last!”
“Lucy and Superman”
“Job Switching”
“The Million Dollar Idea”
“The Fashion Show”
“Lucy and Harpo Marx”
“Pioneer Women”
“Lucy’s Italian Movie”
“Lucy Visits Grauman’s”
“Lucy Gets Into Pictures”
“Lucy Goes To Scotland”
“Bonus Bucks”
“The Dancing Star”
A DVD was released featuring 11 of the colorized episodes, five of which were screened in movie theatres nationwide prior to the DVD release.
Tumblr media
In January 2008, Hans Borger self-published his autobiography “The Little Grownup: A Nostalgic Michigan Boyhood”.

MCU Bucky Barnes
So here’s the thing.
I’m a costume designer by trade, and one thing that I actually really love about Captain America: The Winter Soldier (okay, among the things I love) is the costume design and the rhetorical value given to the clothes and, well, costumes in this movie.
For example - when Sam and Steve have their heart to heart on the bridge that ends with Sam saying “but he doesn’t even know you” and Steve saying “he will” before going to steal his old uniform - the one Bucky last saw him in when he was Bucky. There are some other great costume points in this movie, actually a LOT of them (costumes, not wigs, don’t at me because I KNOW).
But one thing that has always stood out to me, and not in a good way, is the “I’m with you til the end of the line” flashback.
Tumblr media
Now, here’s the thing, it’s not JUST about the clothes. We’re in MCU verse, so it’s MCU canon - obviously, the Steve and Bucky duo is drastically different in Marvel comics canon so - and Bucky starts this scene by saying his folks wanted to give Steve a ride to the cemetery.
Which is super cool and nice. So one, we know Bucky’s dad is still alive - and his mom, but two, we know they have a car.
So this is supposed to be when Steve is around 16? So it’s... 1936 (according to MCU wiki it totally is)
So cars.
Crazy popular ever since they started having closed bodies and all that. BUT, were they crazy popular in CITIES in 1936? Especially in the middle of the Great Depression?
There’s some evidence that actually no, that car ownership in a city like NYC was something like 1 car per every 43 people. Then again, looking at the NYC.gov 2015 Mobility Report we see that the population of NYC in 1936 is something like 7.2 million, and the number of registered vehicles in 764,000... or roughly one per every 9.4-ish persons. Which is a pretty drastically different number. This doesn't, of course, account for taxis or fleet cars being registered - so the number might seem inflated. I still think it’s probably something closer to 1 car per every 20 than every 43 but... I’m too lazy to dig that much deeper at the moment. Plus I'm sick, which is fueling this in the first place.
So, anyway you slice it, Bucky’s family was in 11%, 5% or 2.33% of New Yorkers who own cars in 1936. Which says something, I think, about Bucky Barnes that we don’t always - ever? - think of in fandom.
I’m not going to say that Bucky Barnes was loaded. Maybe his family owned a garage or a grocery store or a delivery service or a funeral home...?? or something. So, the vehicle could be occupational as opposed to private usage - but either way it’s a statement. Bucky’s family has money and/or Bucky’s family has steady employment.
I’ve been there. I’ve read the fics where Bucky works at the docks to put Steve through art school and get him his medicine. I love those fics. I love that head canon.
But I... don’t think it’s realistic in light of some evidence showing us that, actually, Bucky wasn’t doing too badly for himself.
Let’s now actually look at CLOTHING. Here’s the whole scene via youtube, if you want to follow along with what is about to get RIDICULOUS.
Actually, before I dive in, who is the costumer for this movie? And should I be like... reading into all this as much as I am?
Judianna Makovsky - fellow New Jersey..Ian?ite?no clue - 3 time Oscar nominee and designer of 5 MCU films and a lot of other big budget movies, including quite a few period pieces dealing with issues of race and class (The Legend of Bagger Vance, Seabiscuit, The Little Princess.. and also like Harry Potter and The Quick and the The Dead.) So, should I have some faith in Judianna Makovsky’s designs? I’m gonna go with yeah, yeah I should.
So, back to the movie. The scene.
This is post funeral. We’re in 1936. As a general rule, the dress, colors and style of mourning wear was pretty much formalized in the early Victorian era. There was a great - read PHENOMENAL - exhibit at the MET a few years back on Mourning-wear and I’m still reeling from how lovely everything was - but the gist of it is this: you wore black when someone died. If you were a lady, and especially if you were a rich lady, you then went through a few different colors (dull black to SHINY black to purple/mauve and gray and white and then back to color within six months to one year). By the 1930s only the really rich were sticking to the actual rules of mourning - or like, really old people. And, of course, really old rich people. Really old rich WHITE people. Because it needs to be said: these are WHITE customs. I'm not saying people of other ethnicities didn’t follow them, but these are basically British Victorian practices that were assimilated into American culture.
I’m not going to go off on a huge sidebar about American fashion following in French dressmaking and British tailoring, but I need to say at least that much. Everyone who was anyone knew you got your dresses made in France or in the French style and you got your suits made in England - Savile Row in specific. I am NOT implying Bucky’s got himself an English suit, fyi. I just... have to be thorough.
BACK TO THE SCENE:
We’ve got our boy Steve. STEVE. Who just buried Sarah Rogers and what is he wearing...?
For starters, he’s wearing a windbreaker, check out the 1933 ad below, he’s the guy almost giving us the Fonz finger gesture, or maybe guy in the fedora on the end.
Tumblr media
This thing isn’t falling apart at the seams, but it’s a very nondescript not really gray, not really blue - maybe was at one point. It also doesn’t FIT Steve. It also, in the ad above, would cost about $165.40 in today’s money.
My guess? It’s Bucky’s old windbreaker. Because it’s not cheap and because it’s just a bit too big on Steve.
He’s also wearing a shirt that is maybe tan? And a brown tie and maybe - MAYBE black trousers. And if those trousers are black, it’s the only black thing he’s wearing. Not even a black tie, or a black arm band (which I’m pretty sure - but also pretty aggressively atheist so I don’t know - the Catholic Church would have provided for chief mourners and pall bearers right?). We also have our depressing as all shit Depression surroundings to clue us in: Steve Rogers ain’t loaded. Steve Rogers is poor as dirt. Side note: boys. Hiding a key under the ONE FUCKING BRICK on a walkway is not like... a smart idea???
So we can guess a few things here, we can guess that Steve and Sarah were really struggling - this checks out with the rest of MCU canon (wearing newspapers stuffed in his shoes, even when he had nothing he had Bucky, etc.) - and that all money probably went towards Steve’s numerous ailments, food and then the TB medication or treatment, as it was, that was available to Sarah.
We can maybe guess that Steve and Sarah weren’t very religious -but I don’t feel qualified to impart anything except my own agenda here so I’m not taking that stance. But like, real talk, not even an arm band??
But, well, let’s move on to the point of this whole long ass thing anyway?
--
Then we go to Mr. Barnes, looking dapper AF. Also, hey, check out this ad from 1933 featuring... pretty much exactly what Bucky is wearing down to the god-damn two-tone shoes:
Tumblr media
If you’re curious, yeah $24.98 in 1936 is $475.44. I'm not suggesting Bucky Barnes went out and bought a brand new suit for Steve’s mother’s funeral - for one thing, this ad is from 1933. BUT, that suit fits Bucky. Quite well, and it’s in good shape. He’s also sporting that super stylish mid-late 30s into 40s deeply angled collar shirt - as is our dude up in the ad - and so we know these clothes are at least new-ish. We also can see that the suit is definitely of the mid-30s moving into the boxy silhouette of the later 30s and early 40s and NOT the look of the 20s and early 30s, which has an almost bell-bottom fullness to the legs instead of our straight-leg here (though we can debate nuance if you want to hit up my DMs.)
I should note, Bucky’s shirt is not bright and pristine white - it’s kind of grayish? And I can’t tell if that’s supposed to be an old-timey sepia thing or an indication that Bucky can’t afford to... bleach a white shirt? So that’s an odd choice for sure because we’re still in an age when a crisp, white collar shirt means something (Hey, if you want to hear me go on about the democratization of men’s fashion via shirt collars and 19th century Victorian suits, let me know because I am READY).
All this is to say: I don’t think Bucky Barnes is a poor dock worker. I think Bucky Barnes of MCU canon. Okay, so the MCU wiki on Bucky/The Winter Soldier is an actual mess (because it tells us that Sarah died in 1936 and that’s FINE but I’m not going back to change my math because I’m SICK so just... I went back and changed it. She died in 1936. Fine. The damn wiki also says that “a year later, during their art class, Barnes and Rogers found out that the United States of America had joined World War II. Which, like, I’m sick, but there are a few years between 1936 and December 8 1941... just... I’m no rocket doctor but...
ANYWAY. Bucky is a three time YMCA welterweight boxing champion by this “year later”/ 1941-1942. He and Steve are also in an ART CLASS together. Bucky also trained Steve in boxing at Goldie’s gym before the two of them went to enlist - Steve rejected and Bucky, again quoting MCU wiki, “drafted” (which I'm gonna take to mean he didn’t try to enlist when Steve got rejected, they went home and Bucky got called up later but... hey, who knows?!).
So, I can’t easily find the prices of gym memberships in NYC in the 1930s right now because I don’t feel like wading through all of the articles complaining about Equinox pricing in 2019. But I do know that part of Roosevelt’s WPA (Works Progress Administration) building projects included building more public gyms - as well as libraries, auditoriums, pools, parks etc. Check out your local public buildings - if they are WPA projects they will have a cool plaque like my local NJ library does! All that is to say, there were free or very cheap PUBLIC options where Bucky could have trained Steve.
Bucky trained Steve in a private gym. Do I like to think that this is the same gym Steve and America’s ass are working out in in The Avengers? Yes, Yes I do. Do I like to think that Steve likes to box because it reminds him of Bucky? Yes, yes I do.
But moving on: it’s another sign of wealth.
So is this “art class.” Whether we are in 1937 or 1941 - we’re still in the Depression. Steve still has all of his health issues and presumably accompanying “medication” (wanna talk 1930s medicine? Again, slide into my DMs or shoot me an ask). So Steve either has a side job making enough to cover all of that, rent? and enrollment in an art class.
OR maybe Steve is teaching the art class and Bucky is his model for life drawing instruction (yeah, it’s a fic bunny I’m sharing with the world).
OR maybe... Bucky is paying the rent and other things or Steve is living with Bucky and can afford the class and meds... somehow or...
OR I'm not saying that Steve is Bucky’s kept man because Steve Rogers would punch anyone who dared to say such a thing.
All I’m saying is, Bucky Barnes was not a poor dude. Bucky Barnes... had some money.
And also I’m about to be late for my doctor’s appointment so I gotta run.
At me with your thoughts!

For more than a year, Los Angeles-based streetwear designer Tremaine Emory had been working with Converse on a red, green and black sneaker inspired by Jamaican political activist and Black nationalist Marcus Garvey’s Pan-African flag and artist David Hammons’ 1990 work “African-American Flag,” an original of which was acquired by the Broad museum in Los Angeles last year.
Emory’s brand, Denim Tears, tells the story of Black people in the United States starting in 1619, when the first documented enslaved Africans arrived in Virginia; according to the designer, the brand’s logo, a cotton plant, is a direct reference to slavery. That’s why the proposed packaging for his Converse sneaker collaboration depicts a coffin covered with Hammons’ flag and a cotton wreath, as a tribute to Black Americans who have died under unjust conditions. The image is based on an art installation, “A Proper Burial, Thanks America,” that Emory debuted in London last year.
However, in late May, as protests spread across the country after George Floyd’s death in police custody, Emory announced on Instagram that he and Denim Tears couldn’t go forward with the partnership until Converse’s parent company, Nike, went beyond its plan to donate $40 million over four years to support the Black community. (Michael Jordan, through his Nike subsidiary Jordan Brand, is donating an additional $100 million over 10 years.)
Emory called the move by Beaverton, Ore.,-based Nike, which reported $37.4 billion in revenue last fiscal year, a very expensive Band-Aid. He said he wanted to use his voice to push Nike to look inward at its own record on diversity and inclusion.
“It’s accountability,” Emory said in a phone interview. “It’s about Fortune 500 companies and how they are run under the guise of white supremacy and patriarchy and how I take accountability, that I need to see the steps — and brands that I work with dispensing that — or guys won’t work with me.”
In recent months, nearly all major industries, including entertainment, journalism and sports, have been forced to confront how closely their statements opposing systemic racism align with their treatment of Black and brown employees. The fashion industry, which has frequently been criticized for cultural appropriation, instances of blackface and a lack of diversity, is no different.
According to a count by trade publication Women’s Wear Daily, Black people make up only 4% — 19 out of 477 members — of the invitation-only Council of Fashion Designers of America, whose new chairman is Tom Ford. In an email to The Times, a CFDA spokesman said, “The CFDA does not record nor require members to state their race upon application, but it is estimated that members of color make up approximately 25% of the total membership.”

In anecdotal comments, Black streetwear designers from L.A. to New York told The Times that their subset of the fashion industry is no different.
“You can’t ignore the fact that there aren’t many Black brand owners in the streetwear space,” said Scott Sasso, who founded 10.Deep in 1995 while he was a student at Vassar. “And [at] some of the biggest companies, I don’t know if they’ve even had Black employees.”
Streetwear brands such as Denim Tears and 10.Deep offer casual clothing, primarily for men, that blend the styles of various subcultures, including hip-hop (as popularized in the 1990s by brands such as FUBU, Walker Wear and Phat Farm) as well as surf and skate motifs. It’s an identity that can be found in the clothing from brands such as Supreme and Stüssy. Instead of offering widely available, mass-produced products, streetwear brands tend to offer limited-edition drops for consumers who hear about companies through social media or by word of mouth.
Although Black style — from hip-hop to sneaker culture — has played a major role in shaping the fashion industry while bringing new designers and brands to prominence, Black fashion professionals and streetwear brand owners said in interviews with The Times that the clothing industry has failed to elevate and promote Black creatives in a way that reflects that influence.
Several designers also questioned the sincerity of corporations promising to invest in Black communities. They reflected on their own experiences trying to explain Black art to predominantly white company leaders.
Chicago-based designer Joe Freshgoods started selling T-shirts in high school and has been selling his designs out of Fat Tiger Workshop, the streetwear retail hub he co-owns, since 2013.
“I feel like a lot of these brands are in these boardrooms having these talks about how to fix this or how to just clean up their mistakes real fast, and it’s just like, ‘Hey, let’s just fill in the blanks real quick and see if this will make them happy,’” Freshgoods said.
He said he tried to include the logo of the Black Panther Party on a design for an Oakland-themed collaboration with an apparel brand last year. The company’s legal department rejected his proposal. At the time he went along with it, but now he’d push back, he said.
“A lot of Black collaborators are the reason why a lot of brands are super successful right now, so that’s a lot of power to have,” Freshgoods said.
Emory, who has partnered with New Balance and Levi’s, called on Nike to stop supporting Republicans while President Trump is the party’s leader. He also wants the company to release more information on its record of hiring Black employees and assist in “the defunding and total reform of all the police departments across America.”
Since his initial Instagram post in June, Emory has spoken to Converse Chief Executive G. Scott Uzzell or Uzzell’s team about a half dozen times over the phone or in video-conference meetings. In those discussions, Emory said the company acknowledged it hasn’t done everything it could in terms of creating a diverse corporate structure and laid out its hiring plan, especially in its executive suite. The designer said he discussed current initiatives at Nike to invest in Black communities and to address systemic racism and police brutality. “They want to get involved in all that, and we will see,” he said.
The release date for his red, black and green Converse sneaker has been moved up from February to October, ahead of the November election. Emory said the marketing for the shoe will focus on promoting voting. The shoe will be available in North America, Europe and online for $95 to $100.
“We respect and encourage the efforts of any collaborator or athlete we work with to raise their voice against racial injustice,” a Converse spokesperson said in a statement to The Times. “We have spoken with Tremaine and look forward to working through these issues together.”
At its core, streetwear is about authenticity and the personal connection between consumers and the designers and labels they love.
The push by larger brands and corporations — specifically in the fashion industry — to meet the current moment with statements, donations and new initiatives is in direct contrast to what many Black streetwear designers have been doing since the inception of their brands. Those designers have been hiring diverse staff, speaking up about political issues and infusing their works with references to Black culture.
“Now I feel like everybody’s rushing to make some type of relevant shirt or make some relevant message on their Instagram,” said Zac Clark, a Black designer who started his brand, FTP, while in high school in Los Angeles. “To me, a lot of this stuff right now seems very unnatural and just forced from a lot of these brands, so they won’t get ‘canceled.’”
Olivia Anthony, the designer behind the Livstreetwear brand, said the turning point for her New York-based company was her 2017 My Love Letter to Our Culture collection, which paid tribute to Black trends of the ’90s — think long nails, grills and slicked-down baby hairs — that were largely considered unfashionable until they were adopted by other races.
“It was so beautiful, but it was looked down upon,” said Anthony, adding that she wanted her brand to reflect how those Black trends, now featured in magazines including Vogue, have been “shown in a different light.”
Kacey Lynch said he created his South L.A.-based streetwear company, Bricks & Wood, after years of working at streetwear brands where he felt Black representation was missing.
“They wanted a lot from us, but they didn’t want to do the work, what it took to understand us,” Lynch said of his past employers. “Whether that’s Black culture, South-Central, minorities … wherever the cool came from, they all wanted it but they didn’t really know how to identify with it.”
In May 2019, fashion website Hypebeast and Strategy&, a consulting firm in the PwC network, released its Streetwear Impact Report, based on interviews with more than 40,000 Hypebeast readers and 700 global industry insiders. The survey found that 70% of respondents said they care about social issues, 59% said brand activism is important and 47% said they would stop shopping from a brand because of inappropriate behavior.
“It’s fine as a starting point for corporations to say, ‘This is what we stand for and this is what we believe,’” said Elena Romero, a fashion journalist and author of 2012’s “Free Stylin’: How Hip Hop Changed the Fashion Industry.”“But that’s not going to be enough.”
Romero, an assistant professor at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, said companies likely will face questions over where they invest their profits, the diversity of their staff and how they’ve helped build the communities from which their dollars are coming. She said many companies will realize they’ve fallen short because the answers to those questions weren’t a priority until their profits were at risk.
“Now the consumer is saying, ‘You can’t fool us anymore,’” she said. “If you’re not authentic and truly supporting the very same things that these young people believe, your business will suffer.”
The result has been an industrywide push to make those investments now but also to make amends for past inaction. After Black Adidas employees criticized the company’s response to racism, Adidas announced June 9 that it would add more diverse staff, start a scholarship program for Black employees and invest an additional $20 million over four years in programs that serve the Black community. A day later, Adidas upped its $20 million pledge to $120 million. (In addition to those changes at Adidas, the company’s global head of human resources, Karen Parkin, resigned at the end of June after facing criticism for her handling of racial discrimination.)
Adidas also apologized for its past silence. “For most of you, this message is too little, too late,” a tweet from the Adidas account read. “We’ve celebrated athletes and artists in the Black community and used their image to define ourselves culturally as a brand but missed the message in reflecting such little representation within our walls.”
In the broader fashion community, various organizations and members of the industry have offered different strategies for creating a more inclusive environment. Aurora James, a New York-based creative director, started the Fifteen Percent Pledge, which calls on companies to provide at least 15% of their shelf space or contracts to Black-owned businesses.
After the CFDA announced its plan to promote diversity, a group called the Kelly Initiative called for the CFDA to adopt its proposal to conduct and publish a census of diversity in the industry, audit its recruitment practices and release an annual list of top Black talent, the Kelly List. The initiative is named after the late Patrick Kelly, a Black fashion designer who rose to prominence in the 1980s with work that played with Black cultural symbols and racial stereotypes.
April Walker, whose New York brand Walker Wear was worn by ’90s hip-hop stars including Method Man, Tupac Shakur and the Notorious B.I.G., stressed that Black designers need to look outside the fashion industry for success by collaborating, mentoring and sharing resources with their counterparts.
“We just need to not look for the fashion industry, as it’s been very oppressive for the last 30 years, to be the end-all, be-all for our opportunities,” she said, “but to create our own.”
Among streetwear companies, the effort to fight systemic racism in the country and the fashion industry has been on an individual basis, with brand owners of all races deciding how much they’re willing to give back and how comfortable they are using their platforms to discuss and condemn racism.
For some, that means speaking up in solidarity with the Black community. Bobby Kim, cofounder of the Hundreds, a Vernon-based clothing brand, teamed with Pharrell Williams’ brand Billionaire Boys Club to raise money for Black Lives Matter and the Black Mental Health Alliance with a shirt that was available for 48 hours. After the Fairfax shopping district where his shop is located was vandalized in late May, Kim, who’s Korean American, defended the right to protest.
In an interview, Kim said, “If you have been given a lot of money, and especially if that money has come by way of participating, contributing, or even stealing or borrowing from Black culture, then you more than anybody else right now — need to tithe, need to pay up, in a sense, in order to reflect how influential Black culture has been in your career and your profitability as a company.”
Sasso’s 10.Deep stopped selling its regular collection for most of June and instead offered a new line of 10.Deep products to draw attention to activism against racial injustice and police brutality. The profits went to national bail funds for protesters.
“Streetwear, in its truest form, is about shooting yourself in the foot as often as possible but also just doing what you think is right,” Sasso said.
He said he was drawn to streetwear because it was a multiethnic community of different countercultures, a blend of the skate, surf, hip-hop and graffiti scenes, with a dash of punk rock, united by an exclusive knowledge of where to find and buy certain brands.
However, he has noticed a shift among streetwear consumers. For some shoppers, it’s not about the community. It’s just about the clothes.
He said he lost “several thousand” social media followers after he posted about Black Lives Matter and has received comments asking him to just stick to fashion.
“My thought is: If you want just some regular clothes, go buy Banana Republic, go buy Levi’s,” he said. “Those are companies that aren’t gonna take political stances. They’re providing basic stuff. This space is about a culture. If you want to participate in it, this is what it’s about.”
