finnish mythology: pihatonttu
pihatonttu are tutelary, which are spirits or deities of particular locations, people, nation, or culture, of the yard. they are generally described as being short, having a long white beard, and wearing a conical or knit cap in gray, red or some other bright colour. they often have an appearance somewhat similar to that of a garden gnome.

That bloodstained son of Tuoni / struck the man with his sword, struck fear with his hunger. / Threw him to the stream of Tuonela / to the Underworld's underlake. — Kalevala, rune 14, lines 445–8; 451-2.
My rendition of Tuonenpoika, the guardian of the Finnish underworld, Tuonela; This gore-covered son of Tuoni fishes for unwanted visitors downstream, slaying them. He is said to collect the belongings of all the dead flowing down river Tuoni.

Regulus' Brother
Tumblr media
Combining my two passions: Marauders and Kalevala. (This is probably very sacrilegious.)
In Kalevala Lemminkäinen's mother saves his son from the river of death and brings him back to life. I was playing with the idea of Sirius coming to the rescue of his brother. I have a feeling that he gets his brother back only for a short time. R.I.P.R.A.B.

I used Gallen Kallela's painting Lemminkäisen äiti as reference.

Legends and myths about trees
Forest myths, Estonian traditional beliefs (2)
The world of the Estonians’ ancestors - Proto-Estonian mythology
The world of the Estonians’ ancestors is believed to have turned around a pillar or a tree, to which the skies were nailed with the North Star. The Milky Way (Linnutee or Birds' Way in Estonian) was a branch of the World tree (Ilmapuu) or the way by which birds moved (and took the souls of the deceased to the other world). These myths were based on animistic beliefs.
Some traces of the oldest authentic myths may have survived in runic songs. There is a song about the birth of the world – a bird lays three eggs and starts to lay out the nestlings – one becomes Sun, one becomes Moon and one becomes the Earth. Other Finnic peoples also have myths according to which the world has emerged from an egg.
It has been suggested by ethnologist and former president Lennart Meri and among others, that a Kaali meteorite crater which passed dramatically over populated regions and landed on the island of Saaremaa around 3,000 - 4,000 years ago was a cataclysmic event that may have influenced the mythology of Estonia and neighboring countries, especially those from whose vantage point a "sun" seemed to set in the east.
There are surviving stories about Kaali crater in Finnish mythology (Description of indigenous paganism by Finns who always believed in spirit beliefs).
In the Karelian-Finnish folk epic, the Kalevala, cantos (songs) 47, 48 and 49 can be interpreted as descriptions of the impact, the resulting tsunami and devastating forest fires. It has also been suggested that the Virumaa-born Oeselian god Tharapita is a reflection of the meteorite that entered the atmosphere somewhere near the suggested "birthplace" of the god and landed in Oesel.
Estonian mythology is a complex of myths belonging to Estonian folk heritage and literary mythology, and the systematic documentation of Estonian folklore had only began in the 19th century.
Therefore, information on Proto-Estonian mythology before the conquest of the Northern Crusades, Christianisation and incorporation into the European world and during the medieval era, is only scattered in historical chronicles, travellers' accounts and in ecclesiastical registers.
It can be difficult to tell how much of Estonian mythology as we know it today was actually constructed in the 19th and early 20th century. Friedrich Robert Fehlmann, one of the compilers of the Estonian national epic, Kalevipoeg in the introduction to Esthnische Sagen (Estonian Legends), states.
"However, since Pietism has started to penetrate deep into the life of the people...singing folk songs and telling legends have become forbidden for the people; moreover, the last survivals of pagan deities are being destroyed and there is no chance for historical research."

a cookie in exchange for vittra lore?
I would talk about him (and the rest of the gang) for free but cookies are all welcome akshskk
Now he is from my original work so this is heaaavy spoilers if any of you ever get to read it lmao, but anyway!
SO, Vittra is essentially a homunculus, created in order for his bio parents to win an inheritance (the one who had a heir first in the family would get the inheritance aka the family's magic), and creating a homunculus was faster than waiting for a pregnancy. Even though he is fully a human (just artificially created one) no one in his family really believe that he is a real human person. But, because he is their blood, he counts as an heir.
Now, the witch who created him for the parents was like okay sure, but I want him back when he is older (because basically magic lives in the blood, and culminates more the longer the person is alive), so he can essentially reuse him for his own goals. So Vittra is eventually sent off to that witch, his bio parents have more kids by regular means and have the inheritance yada yada. Vittra is very close to getting emptied of his blood by the witch who created him, but that witch's son was like hmmmmm I don't know about that old man I think he's pretty. So he murders his own father and keeps Vittra. And so they play house for a few years and create a couple of kids of their own (the witch's son more for experimentation reasons and for continuing the family legacy, Vittra more for wanting to have a family of his own who would love him for once in his life). Eventually tho the witch's son does a few too many very questionable things, and is imprisoned in the big witch purge, and Vittra is thrown into a jail that is essentially a purgatory dimension in the process (he is still not seen as an actual person by any of them)
So now Vittra spends the next few hundred years in the purgatory dimension and just keeps training and developing his own powers and techniques (he was essentially always the more skilled and definitely the smarter one of the pair) and unlocks many skills that were thought to be impossible, simply because no one else had had the time to try before him. Then the year 2008 rolls around, and after many, many things happening outside of the dimension he is in, he is rescued from there by his grandson (yes there has been a few hundred years, don't worry about it-) and he joins his grandson and great-grandson and the rest of the gang to stop his own son from murdering people in order to gain immortality.
Sooooo that's the short version of it 🥰 found family when the found family is your actual blood family but they are not insane for once-
(he also has two "familiars" that are talking witch ravens who have lightning magic! their names are Borti and Rosti and they are shitheads)

I follow a few semi-popular blogs who often write posts in a "i-know-what-im-on-about" tone. This can make humorous posts even funnier, im not complaining. But so often (around 80% or so) they will make authoritative posts on a subject i know about, and they will be completely off the mark.
Like, if it is about history, they'll theorize about something and link two events that were thousands of years apart, apparently not knowing that their theory was bust before even being uttered. But since they write in an authoritative tone, people will think it's real, and go "oh my, this changes everything!". No one will see that one buried comment about how this has no basis in reality.
This really annoys me, because these posts will get thousands of notes, and people will take it at face value and believe it's real, not just a batshit insane take posted in a "know-it-all" voice.
Something about seeing misinformation get created and spread in real time, i guess.

Recovery of Lemminkäinen's head from the river of Tuonela (Hades).
Lemminkäinen was a worrior who met his death in a cruesome manner and his body was chopped into pieces and drowned in a river. His mother goes to look for the pieces by raking the river. She finds the pieces of his body and with the help of a bee who flies to heavens to get ointments that bring Lemminkäinen back to life.
Falling in love wiht Kalevala. It's a book of poems based on Karelian folklore.

Mythological Deer - Vaadin
“The god Ilmarinen was a blacksmith and inventor, capable of creating anything. He created Vaadin the reindeer out of stone, moss, and birch to carry and assist him in his search for knowledge, giving her lichen to eat and mead to drink.”

in a better world all the true crime groupies would be oversharing about the Voitka brothers. estonian anarchists who lived 10+ years in the woods to avoid mandatory enlisting to the soviet army. attractive in a weird way, tragic, hate the police, reppin that whole survivalist beast aesthetic. their re-integration to society is really complicated and touching to follow in the movie made of them. new light on this case would maybe also be beneficial to them as i couldn’t find info on if aivar is still institutionalized.

Horses and Ravens in Finnish Mythology
Horses and Ravens in Finnish Mythology
The Finno-Ugric tribes shared the widespread Eurasian belief that the world was divided into three levels and related to one another via a world tree. They were referred to as Ylinen, Keskinen, and Alinen levels. The highest spirits and most revered gods lived in the upper realm, which was known as Ylinen (in some cases it was also believed to be the state where the re-birth process…

This is a throwback to a first comic I ever made. I started creating a comic strip called Team Anssi while playing the Birthright route (I got maybe 25% through and got distracted with other things, and that’s where I still am after 4 years or so).  Team Anssi was a cross between a parody of the canon story and a satire of some contemporary phenomena in Finnish culture. I’d maybe share examples but the rhythm and the cultural references of the comic are kind of difficult to translate in other languages.
The central idea of the story was that what if Corrin (called Anssi in my personal game) was “just a guy” trying to survive the story where things simply keep happening to him.
Team Anssi holds a special place for me because I managed to make over a dozen strips for it (and wrote and sketched out even more). I am not good in maintaining longterm projects, so it was an achievement for myself. Also I still have fun when looking through the things I made - which I cannot say for all old writing.
