Zuko’s head was heavily resting in your lap, cushioned on the deep red fabric of your gown pulled over your soft thighs. His amber eyes watched your face closely as you ran your hands through his dark hair, admiring the way the soft strands so effortlessly slipped through your fingers. It had been a while since you had sat like this. Between the conflict at the former colony of Yu Dao, now its own state, and the immediately following search for Zuko’s mother, there had been little time for any kind of quiet intimacy between Zuko and you.
After you had found his mother, and had returned to the palace, Zuko had been quieter than you knew him to be. He had spent a long time talking to his mother before leaving her and his half-sister in order to return to the palace, and you suspected that whatever they had discussed, was still occupying his mind. Usually, he talked to you about whatever thought he couldn’t get rid of, but so far, he had kept it shut inside, making you wonder if it simply was something he did not want to share, if he didn’t want to share it with you, or if he only needed a little more time to think about it.
A few days ago, he had eventually asked if you wanted to come to Ba Sing Se with him, an invitation you had gladly taken. You were staying at his uncle's place, a small house with only a few rooms, which gave the two of you the opportunity to share the narrow bed and cuddle up each night. In the palace, there were always guards around, and Zuko had been advised that it would be better if the two of you were not to sleep in the same room, at least not too often, to avoid gossip. Zuko had been in an especially bad mood after that for a while, grumbling about how he was your boyfriend and why anybody other than the two of you should be concerned with your relationship.  But if he had learnt anything in the year of being Fire Lord, it was that certain advice was better to be followed, and as much as both of you hated it, this was one of the instances.
This in turn meant both of you cherished the time at Uncle Iroh’s home even more. With the excuse of not enough space, you got to share a bed each night, falling asleep in each other’s arms without the concern of guards walking in or starting rumours.
Both of you were aware that you could not hide out in Ba Sing Se forever, but you had agreed that a holiday of a few days would be acceptable, and so you spent the days either helping in Uncle Iroh’s tea shop or talking long walks in the parks that spread wide and far through the city.
Now you were sitting in the garden that belonged to his uncle’s tea shop, back against the trunk of a blooming cherry tree, Zuko laying spread out on the ground, his head resting in your lap. Usually, you would have taken the opportunity to ask him what he was thinking about, but considering the events of the past month, the almost-war at Yu Dao and the reunion with his mother, which he still hadn’t talked about, you thought it would be better if he were the one to talk first. Or not. While you were curious about what had happened, you never wanted to make him feel like you were prying into parts of his life he wasn’t ready to share with you.
His eyes flickered from your face to the pink blossoms above your heads, before focusing back on you, a smile tucking at his lips before he spoke.
“You know,” he began, his voice soft, “For the time in which I was thinking Ikem was my father, I was almost relieved.”
Ikem, the man his mother had loved before having been married to his father Ozai, and the man who she had returned to after leaving the palace.
Quietly you nodded, more to yourself than Zuko. You had suspected as much, judging from his behaviour and how he had talked about Ozai in these days.
“If Ikem had been my father, I’d never have to worry about turning out like Ozai again,” he explained, his eyes almost absentmindedly tracing your features, like a routine that brought him comfort. “I wouldn’t be in danger to turn as crazy and delusional as him, or Azula. And I could have stopped feeling guilty for not being as powerful a firebender as them.”
You wanted to disagree, tell him he was as good as them, but the truth was they were more powerful than he would probably ever be, even though he had by far the better techniques and his skills were more refined. The only ones who had ever looked down on him for that had been the two of them, and to you it couldn’t matter less how good at firebending he was, or whether he was a bender at all. But you had a feeling this talk was better to be had at another time. Right now it was more important that Zuko got to share his thoughts uninterrupted, while he felt safe and comfortable enough to confide you.
“And Azula…” He trailed off, his eyes leaving your face and returning to the blossoms above him. “I always got told these stories when I was little, about siblings sticking together, through thick and thin, like Sokka and Katara. But Azula and I never were like that. Even when I tried to be what I thought a big brother should be like, she only ever took pleasure in humiliating me. If I had been only her half-brother, it would have felt like an explanation, and I could have stopped feeling guilty for it.”
A crease was forming on his forehead, and you brought your hand from his hair to his face, brushing over his forehead with your thumb.
“Why would you feel guilty for the way she was treating you, hm,” you asked. “It doesn’t make sense.”
“No, it doesn’t,” Zuko agreed. “Still there were times when I just wanted to get along with her. I just wanted a normal family. For my father to love me the way my mother had, for Azula to treat me like her brother, even if that includes the one or the other rivalry. But not like some second-class human being.”
“In Azula’s eyes everyone who isn’t her is a second-class human being,” you mumbled.
“I know,” Zuko sighed. “But still.”
“I’m sorry that you never got the family you wished for,” you whispered. “You have every right to be upset about that.”
“For a moment I thought, I could have that family, you know,” Zuko admitted. “If Ikem really would have been my father- I could have had a normal family, the one I always wanted, a father who’s proud of me, my mother who never made me feel small or irrelevant and a sister who actually sees me as a human and not just a challenge.” He took a deep breath. “But I always would have doubted my position as Fire Lord,” he continued. “I wouldn’t have known where I belonged anymore.” He hesitated for a moment before he added: “I think I would have even started to doubt that I belong at your side.”
“I wouldn’t have allowed you to doubt that,” you told him, and the crease on his forehead softened under your insistent brushing over it. You could have been only of little help if he had started doubting his position as Fire Lord, but you would never let him question that the two of you belonged with each other. That was not a matter of heritage, it was a matter of your hearts, your souls. As dramatic as it sounded, you were convinced that Zuko and you were bound together by more than the emotions you were aware of.
Even before you had really gotten to know another, back when you had still been enemies, you had always found and saved each other, even when all rationality had dictated the opposite. You had defied probability and logic again and again, consciously, and subconsciously, so much that by the time Zuko had turned up at the Wester Air Temple with an awkward “Hello, Zuko here”, you had been convinced you were cursed to always run into him.
Now you were convinced it was something else entirely, something that would lead you back to find each other no matter when and where you were. For a while Zuko had loved to throw around the word ‘destiny’, and even though you hardly believed in that concept, you couldn’t imagine to not be bound to him by destiny.
Zuko’s eyes found yours, clear amber staring up at you on a mixture of wonder and admiration.
“No,” he finally agreed with you. “I belong with you. No matter who I am, or where, or when. I’m yours.”
You smiled at the certainty in his voice, knowing that right now there was absolutely no doubt in neither of your hearts about that. Gently you brushed his hair aside and leant down to press a kiss to his forehead. His eyes flickered closed blissfully, and you grinned at the way he puckered his lips, expecting a kiss there too, but you pulled away teasingly. When he realised you weren’t going to kiss him, he blinked his eyes open, frowning at you disapprovingly, while snuggling into the palm with which you cupped his face. Sometimes it still surprised you how touch starved he was.
“And I’m yours,” you whispered, making him blush. After almost a year of exchanged whispers like this you would think he had gotten used to them yet, but you loved how you were still able to fluster him so easily.
“I’m just glad I get to be by your side,” Zuko confessed, making you smile.
“I’m glad, too,” you replied before leaning down again, this time softly kissing his lips, pretending like the soft sigh that slipped past his lips did not make your heart skip a beat, but you had a feeling Zuko knew either way.

“stop…moving!” you grit, holding zuko’s face as he glares at you, small wince erupting from his throat.
“how do you expect me-“ he hisses, hands instinctively flying up to get a hold of your wrists. “to not move when there’s this huge fucking burn on my face!” zuko retorts, grip tightening on you. you sigh, heart dropping as you no longer see that glint in his eyes. the glint that is now replaced with sadness, pain, suffering.
zuko’s chambers grew dead silent, no more arguing, no more disagreeing from you or him. just silence.
a small smile spread on his face as he now caressed your wrist with his thumb, pressing a small kiss to it, “i’m sorry for grabbing so hard.” this made your head perk up, blush spreading across your cheeks. you shake your head, “i understand.” the room goes silent again.
only thing that could be heard were the faint yells of the firebenders training outside and the mouse like footsteps of whoever passed by the unnecessarily and stupidly huge doors.
you kept applying the ointment onto zuko’s wound, sitting back with a small huff to examine him. to you, even with that huge scar on his face, he’s still as handsome as ever. you noticed how he tried to hide it from you, looking down at his trembling hands as the events from earlier are still fresh in his mind.
he slumped back on the bed, eliciting a whine of disapproval - you weren’t done tending to him. zuko ignores this as he just lays there, gazing up at his tall ceiling with a blank stare.
you knew him all too well, which means you also knew he was hiding something. refraining himself from talking. you hated it.
“zuko-?” you started as his body jerked up from the wine red sheets.
“i’m getting exiled.” he didn’t let you speak, words crawling up his throat as he was unable to hold them back.
you felt as if all air had been knocked out of your lungs, like a punch to the gut. your chest heaved, eyes squinting and eyebrows knitting together.
“w-what?” it’s not that you didn’t hear, in fact zuko’s words unfortunately fell on very perceptive ears.
“i’m-“
“you’re joking, right?” you chuckled awkwardly, fading into nothing as his eyes saddened. “i’m sorry.” was all he could muster. you frantically shook your head, disgusted that he felt forced to apologize for something he had no control over.
“how long?”
zuko hummed, eyes spaced out somewhere, looking everywhere but at you. you bit your lip, kneeling towards him, cold and shaky hands cupping his cheeks.
“stop avoiding and answer me, zuko. how long?”
zuko’s eyes peeled away from wherever he was previously glancing at, “however long it takes.” he mumbles and you frown, “what do you even mean by that.” you sigh, sitting back in defeat as you run your fingers through your hair.
“until i catch the avatar.”
you scoffed, “that’s fucking ridiculous.” zuko agreed silently, but that wasn’t enough for you. nowhere near, actually.
“i’m going to speak to your father.” you stand, making him stand with you, eyes wide and pupils blown.
“you can’t, yn.” he reaches for you in vain as you yank your hand back. “don’t try to stop me, zuko.” you were beyond pissed, tone dripping venom as zuko stood in front of you, obstructing your way to the door.
“move, goddamnit!” you hit his chest repeatedly, each strike more desperate than the last. “how are you just…okay with this?” you sobbed, forehead propped against his chest, his arms falling beside him, stiff as a statue.
“what more can i do?”
he made a good point, so good that it shushed you with a slap to the face.
“i’m leaving.”
“yn please wait-“
“im. leaving.” your lip quivered, voice shaky, eyes watery. zuko nodded, moving back to his bed, sitting on the edge.
you made your way to the bed as well, grabbing the ointment and placing it back on the metal tray.
“i hope to see you again, yn.” he murmured, back facing you as you stayed quiet, not wanting to entertain the idea of him leaving. sadly, it doesn’t matter if you entertain said idea or not, it’s happening anyway.
the moment you stepped out the door, that was it, even the hope of ever seeing him again started to dissipate.
by this point you were halfway down the dim hallway, ready to turn the corner back to the servant’s quarters. you looked back, guards standing proud and tall outside the prince’s room. you bit your lip, gazing down at the cold tray in your hands, caressing it with your index finger.
after taking a deep breath and preparing yourself for a life without your first love, you walk off, never to hear from zuko again.
✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦
“fucking hell!” zuko groaned as the memory made an unwanted visit for the nth time this week, standing from his cot like bed. he looked outside the small ship window, eyes landing on an endless ocean, stretching far and wide, separating him from you.
it’s been 3 years since zuko had the pleasure of laying eyes upon you. your pouty lips - which he longed to kiss - sparkling eyes, and beaming smile, he missed it all; every single second of it.
he made it his mission to capture the avatar, whatever it took, zuko will bring him before his father and finally get to feel your embrace again.
the fact that he didn’t seize the opportunity to confess, to tell you just how much he loves you - vocalize the burning desire to make you his partner - was eating at him from the inside out.
zuko paces around the room, breathing heavily as he grows anxious. his patience is running thin and he doesn’t know how much longer he can stay civil.
with three curt knocks zuko turns, uttering a ‘come in’ as his mind was somewhere else. a soldier walks in, with a small bow of his head, he exclaims, “we’ve found the avatar, sir!” this made zuko’s face brighten, nails no longer trapped between teeth.
“where?” the prince breathed, unspoken urgency in his voice. “here in the south pole, sir.” he raised a brow, “how far?” “close by, approximately 2 nautical miles.” despite his shocked expression, zuko was elated.
“good job.” was all zuko said before strolling out his suffocating room. his palms grew sweaty, his heart hammered against his chest. he simply couldn’t contain himself.
he will see you again.
oh, he’s just imagining it; walking up behind you and surprising you, indulging in your warm laugh, welcoming eyes, and safe presence.
this is something he simply won’t - can’t - pass. zuko has the target within reach and he’s going to hold on tight, so tight the avatar will have no choice but to turn himself in.
a way one ticket, an opportunity peeking its face through the blur that is his life.
no matter the circumstance, he will not miss or give up - no, he’s coming home to you, forever this time.

Hi super sorry if your request aren’t open.
I had this thought about Zuko x waterbending reader and maybe they could be related to Hama (like a grandma or something) and r basically it’s difficult to explain but Zuko and reader started dating after the war and he tries really hard to get Hamas approval because he’s from the fire nation and Hama ends up sorta accepting him but is still hella weary about him
‘Dinner’- Zuko x female!reader
An: HIYA! So as to not be annoying I’m leaving my lil disappearance explanation at the bottom, enjoy 🫶
(As usual, thank you for your request and patience it means a lot 💕)
Warnings: fighting/agression but it’s brief dw (this is also a very short piece)
You smiled as a candle flickered in your room, kicking your feet as you read a letter your boyfriend, Zuko, wrote to you. He detailed in it his most recent endeavours as a fire lord, as well as affirmed that he could in fact come for a visit. You had been planning to move to his palace soon, as per his request, but he was afraid your grandmother, Hama, a ruthless fire nation hating blood bender who might just hate Zuko, would not be on board. You decided the easiest way was to have them both over for food, and you’d prepared a huge feast of different delicacies of both nations. Zuko was meant to arrive in about an hour, and Hama was already down stairs washing up. She vaguely knew you were going to introduce her to someone, just not entirely aware of who. You shoved the scroll into another backpack you packed for your move, which was supposed to take place a week from now if all goes well.
You walked over to the window sill and sat on a cushion you placed on the protruding wooden part, sighing. You wandered in an endless maze of thoughts, until a face appeared in front of you. You squeaked, almost falling backwards but you caught yourself. Shaking your head, you unlocked the window and pulled zuko in.
“Dude?” You questioned, pulling him in for a hug.
He smelled like the sea, you noted, originally expecting the smell of a certain beast on him.
“Sorry- I got nervous,” you giggled, pinching his pouty cheeks.
He grinned, dipping you into a passionate kiss that screamed ‘I miss you’ in every language. His hand trailed to your back, and yours his hair. Just as things began to escalate, the door swung open.
“YN!”
Immediately, you pushed him away, and he stumbled backwards. Both your eyes landed on your grandma, who was as pale as a ghost.
“I can explain!”
“What kind of nonsense is this?”
Zuko was frozen, from the long list of things that could've gone wrong, this did not even make the top one hundred list.
“Grandma, this is Zuko,” you calmed down, “My boyfriend,”
He snapped out of his trance and extended an arm to shake with her. She walked out, leaving a small stone to prevent the door from closing again.
“Sorry about her,” you groaned, embarrassed that she left him hanging.
He retreated his arm, shoving it into his pocket, “She already thinks I suck. It’s over.”
“It’s okay she’s easy to win over,” you smiled sweetly, contrasting the lies that currently fled your lips.
Stiff, awkward, weird… all of the above.
You couldn’t relax for this dinner, things were so tense after what just happened. He didn’t even get to say hello before she saw his tongue down your throat and now she probably is a hair away from blood bending him into a ball. And he could tell she hated him- when he asked you to pass him a spoon she threw it at him. She missed…
“So, why don’t you tell her about yourself Zuko,” you broke the silence.
His eyes widened, suddenly being put on the spot, “Well I-uh-um-“ he coughed.
“He helped the avatar end a hundred year war,” you chimed in.
“Yeah so he can start a 200 year war all on his own,” she remarked, glaring at him. “All fire folks are the same,”
“Gram, give him a chance, he’s trying his best,” you held his hand over the table, rubbing your thumb in comforting circles.
Suddenly, a fork came hurling at you, and when you both dodged your hands away, you found it embedded in the table.
“Right…” you breathed out.
She stood up abruptly, folding her arms, “Yn, come outside, now,”
“Yes ma’am,” you replied, looking back at Zuko with a worried expression.
You shut the creaky wooden door behind you and adjusted your garments as you stood by here on the patio.
“A fire nation boy?”
“He’s different… he’s not what you think he is,”
“That’s what they all say Yn, he’s bad news.”
“What about him is bad news?”
“Everything. Especially the fact that he’s a ticking time bomb.”
“He’s a good man.”
“Are you forgetting his past? He attacked the avatar!” Your eyes widened, “That’s right, I did my research… I know every little thing he did and so help me if you dare leave this house with him I will make sure that’s the last time either of you see each other.”
“You can’t do that!”
“Who’s gonna stop me?”
Your eyes brimmed with tears- it was one thing to ban you from seeing him, but a completely other thing to treat you like a child. You were old enough to make these decisions on your own. You huffed, storming back inside and waltzing into your bedroom, slamming the door with a lot of force.
Hama sat back down at the table, smiling before she flipped it onto Zuko. He gasped, standing up quickly to avoid being crushed. She stomped around the table and got up in his face, grabbing the collar of his shirt. She was surprisingly strong for her ancient age.
“What do you want from her?”
“To be with her,”
“Why?”
“Because I love her,”
“WHY?”
“WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO SAY?”
She pushed him onto the ground, lifting her arm as if about to bloodbend him. He’d heard the tales of what she was capable of from his friends, and he felt his heart drop.
Zuko froze, waiting, shielding himself and closing his eyes.
“Aren’t you gonna firebend?” She asked, a bitter sounding tone.
“No.”
Just then, you exited your room, finally having collected your bearings. There, you found Zuko almost curled up on himself, and Hama glaring at him. He breathed heavily, and she looked as if a blood vessel was about to pop. You immediately rushed to his side, helping him up to his feet and checking him for wounds. He was fine of course.
Your hand brushed against his cheek and he closed his eyes, humming, “I’m fine,”
“What did you do?” You yelled, looking at the old lady.
“I tested him.”
You laughed sarcastically, “And did he pass,”
“With flying colours,” 2 out of 3 pairs of eyebrows flew upwards, you and Zuko exchanged glances. “For now,”
After a bit of cleaning up, you finished the night with Zuko in your bedroom, sitting at your desk.
“Is everything okay?” You asked, leaning against the table.
“If she doesn’t even want me near you, how on Earth are you going to move in with me?”
“That’s… that’s a great question.”
An: OKAY SO idek where to start I basically obv got back to school and I had exams and then even MORE EXAMS coming up (send help) BUUUT I mainly just lost my spark and interest in writing but it feels wrong to continue to ignore my inbox so I’m gonna try my best to clear it soon. Nightmares
Summary: Zuko is suffering from nightmares and it’s affecting his duty as Firelord. You finally do something about it.
Author’s Notes: This is part of my Kyoshi Warror! Reader X Firelord!Zuko drabble series) Hope you guys are having a great weekend.
Tumblr media
The air was particularly chilly tonight, the wind whipping all around you as it howled and played with the tendrils of your hair. As the tassels of your Kyoshi headband whip at your face for the hundredth time that evening, you sighed in annoyance blowing it out of your face one more time. You leaned against the palace wall, the stone digging into your back as you glanced around the perimeter briefly before allowing yourself to relax completely. There was no starts out tonight - just the dark inky night sky while the moon hid behind some clouds.  The palace grounds was unusually quiet that evening only adding to the tension that's been building for the past few days.
You quickly glanced over your shoulder and through the balcony doorway where Firelord Zuko slept in his bed. There had a few more break-ins this week and, unfortunately, it had been happening outside of your nightly shifts. Frowning as you recall back to the other Kyoshi Warrior's reports you read this afternoon, they all reported similar things - Zuko was being unusually short-tempered with them, he was falling asleep in meetings, and he was constantly not paying attention. You chewed on the inside of your cheek deep in thought, wondering what could be causing his moodiness - more than usual, that is.
Pushing yourself against the wall, you turned to patrol the rest of the balcony that wrapped around the wall. As you were about to spin on your heel to turn around, you hear it. It’s a hushed sound, almost like a whisper.  You paused mid-step and waited to hear the sound again.
Silence.
'Probably just the wind,' you thought. Even so, you kept your senses on alert in case you heard the sound again as  you continued to pace around the balcony.  As you were about to walk away from the balcony, you hear it again.
A whimper, followed by a stuttering breath. The sound came from the bedroom and your eyes trail to the bed and the faint online of Zuko's body. Even from where you stood, you could see him toss and turn, the sheets tangling around him.
You hung your head, cringing when it suddenly dawns on you. Zuko was suffering from a nightmare - and he had been every night for the past few days when he would go to sleep. You deduced that these nightmares were probably fueled by the recent break-ins. It would explain his recent behavior - his lack of sleep led to feeling more tired and stressed more than usual. That would also explain why he's been falling asleep during meetings with various subjects and definitely his increased in moodiness.
You sigh and untie your cloth belt, placing your sword and Kyoshi fans against the balcony door as you entered Zuko’s bedroom.  As you walked around Zuko's bed to his side,  you watched his features, illuminated the by single candle by his bedside table. He looked peaceful while he slept, but the crease between his brow and the light perspiration on his forehead told you all you need to know that he was far from peace.
Kneeling by the edge of the bed, you placed your crossed arms on the mattress as you watched the Firelord sleep. You frowned when you felt the slight tug of guilt blooming in your chest. Tonight was the third night in the row you've observed Zuko suffering from nightmares. You haven’t brought it up to Suki yet, figuring that maybe Zuko could handle it on his own. After all, nightmares were personal matters.
But after piecing the things together, you felt guilty for not bringing it earlier.  Some strands of hair had slipped over his face and covered part of his face, almost like a half-hidden mystery for you to discover. Gingerly, you lift your one of your hands to brush some of the strands away, a small smile tugging at the corner of your lips. You then let your hand trace his features delicately - over his brows, down his nose, across his jaw.
You stared at him for a moment longer, your cheeks flushing at the sudden realization of how close you were to him as your hand hovered over his face. Spirits, you thought, he was so handsome.
Zuko looked so peaceful while he slept, his face unmarred by the stresses of the day. You often forgot he was young for a Firelord. You couldn't imagine the weight he carried on his shoulders let alone try show the world that the Fire Nation has changed. If there was anything you could to lessen that weight, you would do so in a heartbeat.
Since starting your new position as a nightly guard to the Firelord, your relationship with him bloomed rather rapidly but deeply. He was very quick to open up to you, some nights he would spend sitting out in the balcony with you as he talked about his day or vent about things that were bothering him. You would sit next to him quietly as you listened to the timber of his voice and offered advice when he asked.
But there was always some kind of tension though. Your friendship teetered on a fine line between friends and being more than friends. Jokes that were a little too suggestive, eyes that lingered longer than should have, touches that seemed more intimate...Not to mention, every time he was near, you felt the flip in your stomach and when he catches your eyes, your mind was sent reeling. You weren’t sure if the feeling was mutual, but you certainly knew how you felt about the Firelord.
What you felt for him was definitely more than what a friend should have, but you refrained from ever taking it any step beyond that. After all, he was your superior and the Firelord. It was precisely for that reason you didn't know how to deal with see his nightmares. It seemed like a very personal matter and you didn't want to overstep your boundaries, fearing that it might ruin what you two had. Simply put, it wasn't your business.
“No…please.”
Zuko’s mumbling pulls you out of your thoughts and you watch Zuko as he continues to toss and turn around the bed. Under normal circumstances, you wouldn't have gotten involved, but his nightmares was impeding on his ability to be an effective Firelord so you have no other choice. You stood up from your kneeling position and leaned over to gently shake him awake when he suddenly whispered before swinging up his arms as if getting ready to send a fireball.
“No, please! Don’t…don’t hurt her."
Your eyes widened at the sudden realization that Zuko was about to firebend so you quickly forced his arms down to his sides and put your weight on him. Awkwardly maneuvering so that you can face him, you reached to cup his cheek as you whisper softly,  “Zuko...shhh...hey, it’s ok. Wake up, Zuko.”
Zuko slowly blinks his eyes open, his golden eyes connecting with yours, dazed. His eyes were heavy with sleep, but when he suddenly realizes the position you're in his eyes widen as he asks lowly, “(YN) - what’s wrong?”
He sits up and you let him after making sure he was fully awake. He tilts his head at your frown and brings to brush his  thumb on your jaw when you don't reply right away. You blink up to him and you give him a reassuring smile as you slip your hand onto his, noting that his hand was still shaking.
“Zuko, you were having a nightmare…Is everything ok?”
Zuko's eyes widen briefly as he stares down where your hand was brushing his knuckles before reluctantly pulling his hands away to rub his eyes out of sleep.  He knows he should tell the truth and tell you he's been having nightmares. But he wasn't ready to share the contents of his nightmare with you yet. It ranged from his father breaking out prison and reclaiming the throne, to Azula escaping the asylum and hurting everyone he loved and cared about - including you. Tonight, he had dreamt he saw Azula take you as a prisoner and use you against him. Azula was about to use her signature lightning to hurt you when you had woken him up. He remember feeling so shaken at the thought of not reaching you in time.
Zuko had woken up to your worried face, your hand stroking his cheek softly. He had to force himself not to pull you into him and press those worries away, but he instead sat up against his headboard. He didn’t want to make you more worried or make your job harder as it is; so he simply just pats your hand and reassures, "It was nothing. I'm fine now."
You sigh as you hang your head with a shake. It was now or never. Whispering lowly, you looked up back at him with a raised brow, "Excuse me, my lord, if  step out of line. But I know you've been having nightmares. After all, I'm supposed to look after you.  Not to mention, I keep hearing complaints about your irritable mood from Suki and the rest of the warriors.”
Zuko shakes his head with a smile on his face, laughing through his nose, “Nothing ever escapes you, huh?”
You laugh easily before squeezing his hand again. “No, it doesn’t, Zuko.”
The easy way his name rolls out your tongue makes him inhale sharply. It was always “sir”, or “my lord”, or “my king.” So anytime his own name came out of your mouth, it made him crave it just a bit more. Zuko briefly trails his eyes over your face noting how the candle on his nightstand made your features glow - from your striking eyes to the curve of your soft lips that looked so tempting.
“I did have a nightmare, but I’m fine now. I’m actually wide awake now,” Zuko sighs as he brushes his hair with his fingers as his sigh turns into a yawn. He blushes as he covered his mouth with the back of his hand.
You smirk at him and Zuko feels his stomach twist at the sight of your painted lips. He wondered how soft it would feel under his own? Zuko inwardly shook his head at his thought.
He was awake right? Right.
Snorting at him, you reply “And I’m a platypus bear. You need sleep, my king. Suki mentioned that you will be meeting with the Earth King today so you need all of your energy.”
As you move to stand from the bed, however, Zuko’s hands shot out and tugs at it, making you tilt your head at him. “Did you need anything?” You ask.
Zuko shook his head. “I...I just feel wide awake. I don't think I can go back to sleep at this point.”
You put a finger on your chin as you wrack your head with ideas to help the Firelord sleep, before a blush spreads across your face. When you were younger, you often had problems going to sleep. Anytime that would happen, your mother would read out lout to you and, as if magic, you would fall right asleep. Her gentle, soothing voice would always lull you back to sleep. You meet Zuko’s eyes expectantly and you sigh with defeat.
“Alright, I have an idea."  You rose from the bed as one of Zuko's brows raise in curiosity.
Zuko crosses his arms, an amused smirk spreading across his lips. "An idea? That's a first..."
You turn sharply at him to glare playfully, "Oh shut it. Anyways, when I was younger, my mother would always read to me whenever I had troubles going to sleep. Wanna give it a try?”
Zuko hums in thought and says, “Doubt it’ll work for me, but how can I pass up such a great opportunity. It’s not everyday the Firelord gets to have someone read them to bed.".”
You laugh through your nose, shaking your head as you walk up to the bookcases that adored the wall. Zuko watches as you look through his bookcase with a lazy smile. He almost felt delirious from the lack of sleep and wondered if he was truly still sleeping.  As you continued to look through the books, Zuko let his mind wander back to his nightmare.
He still felt some of the traces of anxiety from his dream lay heavy in his chest and he clutched at the sheets when a flash of your face in pain hits him. A slight wave of protectiveness washed over him. He understand that in your line of work, you could get hurt anytime. Even worse is that he knew you would put your life on the line for him.
And that frightened him.
You would do anything to protect the Fire Lord. He felt the fine line of their relationship, always teetering to something more. But the fear of you getting hurt because of him was the only thing preventing him from pursuing the relationship even further. No matter how much he wanted to.
Oh, how he thought about being with you. Zuko would wake up every morning with you in his bed, instead of by his balcony as you guarded him all night. He wanted to eat dinner with you, instead of watching taking a bite from his plate before giving the plate to him. He wanted to take you to the Jasmine Dragon and have tea with his uncle instead of you reading over his itinerary and checking the tea shop's perimeter.  He wanted more.
But for now, Zuko decided to just admire you from afar and hoped that you would stay by his side until he was ready to tell you his true feelings. He watched fondly as you turn and cock your head at him, brows raised, “I didn’t know you liked fairy tales, my king…”
Zuko rubs the back of his neck with embarrassment before sharing, “Actually, I found it among my mother’s things. I wanted to keep everything that was here in tact.”
Your heart tugs at hearing Zuko talk about his mother and you smile tenderly. “Lets read it then."
As you make your way to his bed again, Zuko scoots over a bit and makes room beside him on the bed. Warmth spreads across your cheeks when Zuko pats the space next to him. You were about to refuse when you finally gave in to that part of you that so desperately wanted to throw caution to the wind and just openly express your feelings for him. It took a lot of willpower to keep your composure as you kick off your boots and remove the Kyoshi armor, leaving you to your green dress uniform. You sit next to him shly, before Zuko sighs with exasperation and wraps his arms around your shoulders to pull you in closer. He puts the blankets over both your laps and looks at you expectantly.
You breathe through your nose with amusement before clearing your throat, “Comfy?”
Zuko looks at you with a tired, lopsided smile. “Yes. Well, come on, let’s get on with it.”
Shaking your head, you flip to the first page and start reading.
“Once upon a time…" ------
Zuko was fighting to stay awake as your soothing voice lulled him to sleep as you continued to read out loud from the pages. He had somehow scooted so that his head laid on your lap as you stroke some of his hairs away. You would occasionally stop to flip the page before going back to your ministrations. You were so warm  that it made him feel safe. He finally surrendered and let his eyes, that were heavy with sleep, drop.
You stop the mid-sentence as you hear a slight snore coming from Zuko, his eyes closed with sleep. Brushing your hands through his scalp, you hear a slight groan and your cheeks flush at the deep sound. You shook your head out of stupor and leaned over to whisper in his ear, “You need to sleep, m’lord.”
Zuko just hums as he cuddles more to your side. “Mmhm, you’re comfy.”
You laugh quietly, as you slowly pull yourself out of his grip, Zuko curling into your previous spot. Your heart tugs at his peaceful expression, glad that his nightmare seems to no longer plaguing his mind - at least that’s what you hoped. Carefully marking your place in the book, you place it on his bedside table before pulling the blanket under Zuko’s chin and tucking it around him, before staring at the Fire Lord with a soft smile.
You smile as you brush some of his hair away as Zuko mumbles something incoherent under his breath as you lean over.
Zuko was on the brink of sleep when he feels the brush of your fingers through his hair and a smile tugs at his lips. He sighs when he feels your soft lips on his forehead, your lips brushing against his skin as you whisper, “Goodnight, my lord. May you sleep well tonight.”
And Zuko falls into a dreamless, peaceful sleep.
------
The next morning, Zuko finds himself alone in his bed. He swore you were with him last night but shook his head and  concluded  that it must have just been a dream. He looks over at the balcony door where he sees you standing up straight as if you haven’t moved all night.  He yawns as his arms stretch upwards, finally feeling rested for the first time in days. The nightmares that he had been having were truly taking toll with his sleep. Zuko stretched his arms up high as he let out of satisfied groan when he felt some of bones crack.  He wondered how he was able to get such good sleep until he sees a familiar book on his bedside table, and the memories of last night comes rushing back.
Zuko remembered you waking him up from his nightmare and then reading to him. He must've fallen asleep after that. He glances over at you again and notices that you’ve shifted your weight a bit. He knows that you know that he’s awake. Grabbing a robe by his bed, he put it on as he walks out of the chilly air of his balcony.
He stands beside you as he looks over the palace grounds and then up at the sky. Feeling the energy from the morning sun waking him up. He glanced over to you and greets, “Good morning.”
You glance over at him and give him a small smile. “Good morning, my lord. Should I get the maids to get your breakfast now?”
Zuko ponders briefly before smiling over you. "That would be great, (YN)."
You politely nod to him, glad to see he looked more rested than the previous day. As you were about to turn on your heel to go back to the main hall to find a maid, Zuko's hand on your arm stops you. Glancing down at his hand, a blush reaches your cheeks. With a questioning brow, you ask, "Is there something wrong?"
The Firelord looked sheepish, bringing a hand behind his neck and rubbing it nervously. He wanted to take that firs step and this was his chance. It was now or never. A pink tint rises up to his cheeks as he Zuko shyly suggests, "Actually, I was hoping you can come and join me for breakfast."
Your cheeks redden even more as your insides rush with excitement. Biting your lip, you look up at his through your lashes before replying, "I would love that."

i know there are a bunch already but i can not get enough of zuko x reader arranged marriage fics ... a drabble to spare?
no such thing as too much zuko, anon!!
Tumblr media
Zuko knew why he was going through this arranged marriage, but that didn’t mean he was particularly thrilled about it. He didn’t expect much from the niece of Earth King Kuei, and figured they’d be a good enough pair and (ideally) learn to love one another, but he couldn’t take his mind off the girl from his uncle’s tea shop.
The girl had simply called herself Sakura, no family name, to which Iroh exclaimed, “Like the flower, and as beautiful as one too!” She was a regular at the Jasmine Dragon tea shop, and when Zuko helped his uncle out from time to time, she always managed to stop in to say hello over a cup of sencha.
She was sweet, but slightly mysterious, which is what intrigued Zuko to begin with. He wondered if she realized he was the Fire Lord — she had to, right? — and often wondered if he’d ever see her again. Now that he was getting married, she’d likely stop visiting the tea shop (at least when he was there, anyway; Iroh claimed she was a regular even when Zuko wasn’t around, but she did seem to show up more when he was). He wouldn’t be able to solve those mysteries.
Or so he thought.
When Zuko first received the offer of arranged marriage from Kuei, he knew he couldn’t really refuse. It was all part of the deformation of the Fire Nation colonies, and a strategic alliance between the Earth and Fire Kingdoms under Zuko’s new peaceful rule. Since Kuei didn’t have a daughter of his own, his niece would have to do, especially since she and Zuko were the same age.
From what Zuko heard, Kuei’s niece (YN) was much like her uncle in certain ways. She didn’t have a pet bear, but she was a bit peculiar in that she liked to roam among the locals and hide her royal status, and she used her earthbending more for gardening than for anything else. She was a gentle young woman, like her uncle was a gentle man.
Zuko thought that wasn’t so bad; perhaps they could bond over their closeness to their uncles, at the very least.
He wouldn’t meet or even see his bride until their wedding day, so to say he was anxious while waiting for her to walk down the aisle was an understatement. But still, he couldn’t get the image of Sakura out of his mind. He’d hoped that perhaps it would be her to walk down the aisle, and he thought he was hallucinating when his bride began her walk and it was Sakura.
Zuko blinked a few times, certain that he was mistaken, but his eyes weren’t deceiving him — either this was Sakura from the tea shop, or (YN) was her doppelgänger. He was even more certain it was actually Sakura when she spoke her vows, and her voice was equally identical.
When the ceremony ended and the festivities began, Zuko looked to his new wife and smiled. “Did you ever plan on telling me?”
(YN) giggled softly. “I hope you’re not offended. I use a fake name whenever I roam Ba Sing Se. Just wanted to be treated normally.”
“Did my uncle know?”
“Oh, Iroh’s known the whole time,” (YN) said nonchalantly. “He also knew that I’d frequent more often in hopes of seeing you. I guess you could say that I didn’t complain when I heard of this arranagement. Sure, we’re moving a little faster than I’d anticipated, but beggars can’t be choosers and all.”
Zuko smiles and said, “Had I known today’s surprise was in store for me today, I’d have acted on my feelings for you a lot sooner,” Zuko said. (YN) laughed at that, and it made his smile grow.
Suddenly, they heard the sound of clanking glasses. (YN) noticed Zuko’s confusion and laughed.
“What’s happening?” Zuko asked. “Why are our uncles hitting their glasses with knives?” Soon, their uncles were joined by Aang and the rest of Team Avatar, and more tables joined in soon after.
“It means they want us to kiss,” (YN) said.
“Shall we grant them their wish?” Zuko asked playfully. As you nodded, Zuko cupped one side of your face with his hand ever so gently, and pulled you in for a passionate kiss. His lips felt warm and soft against (YN)’s own, and the clanking was replaced by a few people cheering or whistling.
“They’re going to be doing this all day, aren’t they?” Zuko asked when your lips parted.
“Knowing my uncle? Oh, yeah.”
“I could get used to this,” Zuko said and kissed (YN) again.

Zuko x f!Reader fic
Hey, do you ever feel like the comics royally screwed over sweet Zuko in The Love Department ™? Me, too. Here's a Zuko/female reader fic to dull the pain. This follows the comics pretty closely, just trying to weave in one extra Kyoshi Warrior (guess who), traveling to the Fire Nation with Suki, Ty Lee and the rest of the warriors to serve as Prince Zuko's personal guard. I think you can guess where this is going.
Part I
Warnings: None
Word Count: ~ 1300
I don't know where this is going to go, so! If you have thoughts, shoot me an ask. Maybe more, maybe tag list? Idk
I.
THE AFTERNOON SUN glittered on the surface of the water. On the horizon, Elephant Koi rose from the depths with a splash. Y/N took a moment to bask in the sights of Kyoshi Island as she reached for her waterskin. She took a deep drink and wiped the sweat from her brow as Suki called an intense day of training to a close for the Kyoshi Warriors. The voice of her friend and sparring partner, Ty Lee, broke Y/N’s silent admiration of the scenery.
“Y/N!”
“Mm? Ty Lee?”
“Why do I feel like you’re not listening to a word I’m saying.”
“That’s because... I’m not. Sorry..! Ow! Stop! I said I’m SORRY! It’s been a long day. What were you saying?”
A wicked grin came over Ty Lee’s face as she ceased her assault of Y/N.
“I was saying, our newest sister is picking up Chi blocking really quickly, and I think it’s time for her to get some real training in”.
Y/N laughed and rolled her eyes. “Okay, so why don’t you spar with her, then? I promise I’ll carry you home when your legs are jelly.”
“So, first of all, you said that last time and then walked away laughing. But you know what I mean, Y/N! She needs to spar” Ty Lee pleaded, sending her friend a doe-eyed look.
“Alright, alright. I’ll spar with her tomorrow after training, and we’ll see just how good of a teacher you are, Ty.”
“I knew you would come around!” squealed Ty Lee, throwing her arms around her friend. Y/N responded with an exaggerated eye-roll. “Plus, I’m covering ALL of your watches during your trip home. You owe me!”
At the mention of home, Y/N cast a dreamy look to the horizon and sank down onto the beach. “You’re right,” she said, pulling her armor off and burying her feet in the sand, “I do owe you… big time”.
Ty Lee cartwheeled into YN’s field of view, landing in a handstand inches from her face. “Are you excited? You’ll get to see your boooyfriend“ Ty Lee quipped, raising an upside-down eyebrow.
Y/N exhaled deeply, avoiding her curious gaze. “I’m… excited, I guess, to see Haru. I don’t know, Ty. It’s not that simple. I’m probably going to have to figure that... whole thing out when I get home, huh?”
Ty Lee’s response was cut short by a shrill signal coming from the temple; a signal for the Kyoshi Warriors to assemble. Y/N rose up, brushing sand off of her green skirt and donning her armor. The two girls cast each other a knowing look. “Maybe I won't have to figure it out, after all” Y/N said, as the two started their run into town. “It sounds like we’re needed elsewhere”.
-
Suki took her place at the head of the group, looking at the group of warriors gathered in front of her. A messenger hawk carrying the symbol of the Fire Nation perched on her shoulder.
“Kyoshi Warriors, we’ve been asked to serve as Fire Lord Zuko’s personal detail” a stoic Suki told the room. A murmur rose from the group. “There have been six attempts on the Fire Lord’s life in his past year on the throne, and it’s now our job to ensure his safety. I’ll be assigning you all to  two groups; one to stay here on Kyoshi Island, and another to be detailed to the Fire Nation Capital. You’ll receive your assignments tomorrow morning, and we’ll head out shortly after. Sleep well, everyone. Dismissed.”
The group broke apart, discussing the news. “Looks like your trip home just turned into MY trip home!” Ty Lee said excitedly. “I can’t wait to show you where I’m from! We’re going to have so much fun!” Y/N glanced away from Ty Lee to where several warriors had already begun to approach Suki, undoubtedly about their potential assignments. “I don’t know, Ty, I think maybe it would be best if I stayed here”.
A look of confusion crossed Ty Lee’s face. “Really? But wouldn’t you, of all people, want to go? I mean, you’ve never even seen the Fire Nation, and it’s where yo-“
“But who's going to look after Kyoshi Island?” Y/N interjected. “Plus, I’ve been a Kyoshi Warrior for less than a year. I’ve never left the Earth Kingdom… and look at how excited everyone else is at the possibility of going. It’s better that I stay here”. Y/N broke away from Ty Lee and the rest of the crowd.  “Come on, let’s go get some dinner” Y/N said softly, and turned to exit the temple.
-
LATER THAT NIGHT, Y/N returned to the temple to find Suki sitting pensively on the floor. She had seen a light in the temple from her bedroom window, a sure sign that Suki was still there, working through a big decision.
“Knock knock” said Y/N softly, entering the room. Suki looked up, offering a slight smile at the sight of her friend. “How are you, Suki?” Y/N asked, taking a seat on the floor next to her. “This is a big task ahead of us, and the Fire Lord is a friend of yours”. Concern flashed across Y/N’s face. She reached over and gave her friend’s arm a soft squeeze. Suki sighed, rolled back onto the floor, and splayed her out arms with a thud. In response, Y/N collapsed onto her back in dramatic caricature of Suki’s movements, earning a chuckle from her friend. “I’m glad you came down” said Suki softly, “I was just thinking about how I wish Sokka was here to talk to. There’s so much on my mind”. Her brow furrowed before continuing.
“It’s not that I’m nervous about the mission…” she said, her voice becoming hushed. Her eyes scanned the ceiling, almost as if looking for answers. “I’m worried about Zuko. Mai’s letter mentioned he hasn’t been himself… he’s having trouble sleeping, and this Yu Dao conflict keeps escalating.” Suki hesitated for a moment, then turned to face Y/N. “I was actually hoping you would come with my group to the Fire Nation. Not only are you a skilled warrior, but I think you might be able to help figure out what to do about Yu Dao and the Harmony Restoration Movement” her voice hushed further “...because of what happened to you.”
Y/N took a deep breath, closing her eyes. They sat in silence for a moment. “You’re my leader, Suki. And my friend. I’ll go wherever you need me” Y/N replied with a soft smile. A sigh escaped Suki, a breath she didn’t know she had been holding. She rose to her feet and offered a hand to Y/N, pulling her up to her feet. “Thank you, Y/N. Our ship leaves tomorrow morning. We might be there a while… so make sure to pack all of your belongings”. Suki’s gaze softened when she saw a nervous look flash across Y/N’s face. “I’m really glad you're coming with us, Y/N… I don’t know how long I could handle Ty Lee without you” she said, causing Y/N to burst out laughing. “That’s fair. It’s a tough job... but someone has to balance out the pinkness of her aura” Y/N said, and they both laughed. “I’ll see you tomorrow morning, Suki. I need to rest up… apparently one of our sisters needs to test her Chi blocking tomorrow” Y/N said with a wink, earning one last laugh from Suki before making her way back to the village.

‘Bandits’- Zuko x female!reader
Masterlist <3
An: Summer is already almost over?? WHY??? Anyways, THIS REQUEST WAS LIKE SUPER DUPER CUTE AND the brackets u added at the end were so cute idek why 😭
Summary:
You get attacked whilst out and about, but maybe it was for the better.
Warnings: half of this is Zuko admiring you LOL, violence.
Zuko was the best fire lord, you think. Perhaps you were a little bias, but letting you stay in the palace rocked. Apart from visiting your hometown, you didn’t exactly have a plan for after the war. You bounced around a little, and then, a golden offer came. Zuko wanted your assistance with royal matters, you’d be the royal advisor. The title was already enough for you to be on board, but it also offered you a place to stay for a while. You just couldn’t pass that up, and hey, maybe since he’s been at this for a few months, the workload would lessen.
You were none the wiser.
You see, his life was nothing but a dumpster fire. From meetings to paperwork to arguments to rebellions to assassins to training and so on so forth, his life was a mess of schedules and poorly planned breaks.
The fire lord confided to you a lot about this, the absolute look of despair on his face as he entered another meeting, or the slow steps from the weight of his armour. He would rest his head on your lap in the library, and whilst you read the latest addition of your favourite book, he dozed off into a 15 minute nap. It was the perfect crime. They couldn’t yell at you, he was asleep right there, and they couldn’t yell at him, he was the ruler.
On a particular day, Zuko suddenly opened the door of your room, which he intentionally planted right by his.
“YN!”
“ZUKO! HASN’T ANYONE EVER TAUGHT YOU TO KNOCK?”
“Uh-“ he flushed immediately, “Sorry, I wasn’t thinking straight,”
“What brings you to my quarters, your majesty,” you rolled your eyes, adjusting yourself in the mirror on your vanity.
The boy stuck his tongue out at you, “I don’t have anything to do today let’s go out,”
“In this weather? Are you insane?” It was the prime of summer in the fire nation, death by heat stroke at the mere thought of going outside.
“You’ll live,” he mumbled, walking out.
Begrudgingly, you got up, stretching as you picked out the lightest outfit.
The sun burned the top of your head, you groaned, realising you forgot your hat. Zuko offered you his. He was always like that with you. So chivalrous, and yet, so childish.
“M’lady,” he bowed as he passed the large hat to you, moving to grab his spare. He kept it loosely around his belt.
“That seems excessive, but thanks,” intrigued were you, why was there another hat there?
“Maybe, but you literally always forget yours,”
“Cute,” he blushed, “But what kinda belt just has a hat hook?”
“I had it tailor made,” he played with his fingers, this clearly embarrassed him.
You were stunned to silence. Zuko tailor made a belt for me.
“Dork.”
You heaved heavily as you finally reached the market. See, the former prince had no intention of visiting the popularised shops, he opted for the small town one west of the castle. He tipped his hat lower, and you pushed your sunglasses up higher on the bridge of your nose.
“Wow you’re so different and not like other guys,” you mumbled.
“What do you mean?”
“This place looks abandoned,”
“Give it a shot, the stuff they sell is actually nice,”
“Zuko,”
“You’re so close minded, trust me for once,” he looked off to the side, where a few suspicious men were grinning at you two, he grinned to mask his worry, “Just stick close to me and we’ll be fine,”
“If I die I’ll kill you,”
“I’ll take you up on that,”
Despite your ‘friends that work together’ relationship, sometimes you felt he was being a little touchy. Especially around another man, he’d make sure there was distance between you two and him. You chalked it up to this place being shady.
“Just go I’ll be fine,” just as humans do, Zuko really needed the bathroom. Of course, you couldn’t exactly join him, gendered bathrooms are a thing, so you told him you'll just wait in the nearby stores.
“Don’t talk to anyone don’t look at anyone don’t buy anything-“
“You’re not my dad Zuko, chill,” you pushed him lightly, he rolled his eyes and left to do his business.
You were humming quietly when a woman tapped your shoulder. She wore a mask which concealed most of her features, and had a hat almost as big as yours on.
“Hello,”
‘Don’t talk to strangers’ you replayed. You pretended not to understand. You tilted your head to the side, shrugging animatedly.
“Are you a foreigner?” You continued the ‘deer in headlights’ act, and that’s when your eyes finally landed on her left arm. It rested in her pocket, and seemed to be flexed. A funny feeling rose in your stomach.
“Guys, she’s a foreigner,” she yelled out behind her, a few men and women coming up. There were about 4 or 5.
Your eyes kept snapping to the bathroom, willing Zuko to sense the situation. You were severely outnumbered, and judging by the looks of the people in the back, there were for sure a few benders. You thought to use your own powers, but due to the extensive work you perform, you rarely had time to train.
“Just give me your money and we’ll let you go princess,” one of the boys mumbled, coming up to threaten you.
You furrowed your brows, still pretending to be confused. You thought to pretend you were oblivious might actually help. You smiled brightly, turning around and buying a small souvenir for the man. You grinned as you passed it to him, a weirded-out look crossing his barely showing features.
“Is she stupid?” He peered forward into your open wallet, showcasing no money. Zuko was the fire lord. Why would you need anything aside from loose change?
“Probably, look at her, she’s dressed like a tourist,”
“That necklace looks expensive,” a woman remarked, nearing you inquisitively.
“Ah you’re right,” the leader smiled, leaning closer to you, she signed with her hand a necklace around her neck, pointing at yours afterwards, “Nice necklace, where buy?” She dumbed her words down.
You took it off, silently panicking as you removed Zuko’s handmade pendant. It was a gold encrusted heart locket, and inside was a tiny mix of your nation and his’ shades, making a gorgeous concoction. It was a thank you for joining him. The metal that crafted it seemed dainty, but was strong and durable.
You used it to your advantage.
As the mystery lady’s eyes lit up at the sight of it, you spun her around, placing the jewellery on her neck, restricting her airway.
“Nobody move,” you scowled, looking around.
The woman signalled with her hand for them to stay still. She then turned around quickly, using her pocket knife to gnaw at the metal. It didn’t work, but it did leave a few nasty scratches on it. She used the same blade to attempt to cut you, but you dodged, pushing her to the ground under you. You stood in a standstill.
“You’re not a foreigner,” she mumbled.
“You’re trying to rob me,” you narrated.
“Doesn’t take a genius,” some guy yelled. Most tellers hid at this point.
“Just give me the necklace, and all will be good,”
She pounced, pushing you into a pole. Another woman restricted your arms behind it. She walked up to you again, grabbing the jewellery harshly. Using her knife, she guided your chin to look at her.
“Tell me, how much did you buy this for,”
“It’s handmade,” you frowned, wincing as she dug the knife further into your neck, not quite breaking skin.
“It’ll pawn for a pretty penny,” a man rasped, getting closer. Both the bandits were now right in your face.
Thankfully, legs are good for kicking. You sent them both back flying, twisting around to free yourself from the other lady. During the process, your hat fell and sunglasses followed.
“She works with the fire lord, RUN!” As you tried to locate the lady, they scrambled away. You were left without a necklace, and with hurried steps.
You ran up to the stalls, talking to the nearest man.
“Hey!”
“Women’s bathrooms are over there,”
“Cool I need the men’s,”
“You’re not allowed in there,” he looked concerned.
“I know, I’m looking for a man about this tall, wearing a ridiculous hat.”
“Oh, is that him?”
“Hey YN, where’d your hat go?”
“Let’s go home,” you tugged on his hand.
“But you said you wanted to get food?”
“I’m not hungry anymore,”
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“Whatever you say…”
He continued to try to probe for more information, and you continued to shut him right back down.
When you finally got home and got changed, you were dunked right into another meeting. You sat next to Zuko, resting your head on your palm. Your non dominant hand rose to fidget with the necklace, only to be faced with the intense heartache that its absence brought forth. You sighed.
After what felt like an eternity and a half, the general- admiral(?), whoever, finished his speech and let you all excuse yourself. You matched your friend’s pace.
“Where’d your necklace go?”
You frowned, “probably at some pawn shop by now,”
“Okay ouch,” he furrowed his brows.
“I didn’t sell it,”
“Huh?” You reached your quarters, the moon dominating the dark sky. You pushed your door open.
“I was robbed earlier- at the market,” your feet guided you in, and towards your closet.
“Wait what? Is that why you wanted to leave? Why didn’t you tell me-“
“Zuko there was nothing you could do.” Pyjamas placed on the bed, you flopped on the mattress next to them.
“I could’ve had them imprisoned. I could’ve protected you,” he seemed hurt.
That angered you. You got up suddenly.
“I’m not some damsel in distress Zuko,”
“That’s not what I meant!” He stuttered.
“Oh yeah? Then what did you mean?”
“I just-“
“Forget it.” You pushed him out of the room, locking the door.
He knocked harshly. “Hey! You can’t just do that!”
“Why not?”
“B-BECAUSE?”
The soldiers and staff in the hallway tried to conceal their laughs, they really did, but seeing the fire lord begging his advisor who he’s totally not in love with to open the door was the funniest thing ever. Especially since he was so flustered.
“Yn please,”
“I’m changing don’t be weird,”
“When you’re done,” he rolled his eyes, resting his head against the door.
He practically fell on top of you when you opened it again.
His breath caught in his throat. Seeing you look so peaceful made him feel things. The way your face was illuminated by the dull- almost dead- candle you refused to replace. And how it made your eyes sparkle. And how yo-
“Zuko?”
“Sorry, lost in thought,” he flustered.
“It's okay,”
You stepped back, and he entered your room. It was decorated beautifully, much better than his room, Zuko never quite had the eye for design. And oh, it reeked of you. How the sheets were slightly dishevelled, the curtains weren’t quite closed all the way, the carpet had imprints of where your slippers were, and how all the decorative pillows were strung around the floor, your favourite ones still finding home on your bed.
“Sorry it’s kind of a mess,”
A mess? Surely this was an art piece. A painting of your room should be displayed in a museum.
Maybe you were a little more than his adviser. Just a little though. You sunk into the sheets, covering yourself in the warmth of a weighted blanket.
“Sooooo,” he dragged.
“Yeah Zuko, I got jumped.”
“I don’t understand,”
“What don’t you understand, I was attacked, and since I had basically no money, they took my necklace,”
“Oh,”
“Yeah,”
He paused. “Well are you okay?” He’d notice you looking out of your window frequently, and paranoidly checking your room and halls before entering.
“I’m fine,” you lied, for you were scared. Scared of being pinned with a knife to your neck, with the wrong move being the invitation to your funeral.
He tilted his head.
“Fine I lied. I'm not Fine Zuko,”
He smiled softly, a look of pity on his face. You got up out of bed, going near the window. The boy followed.
Again, your hand went up to play with your necklace.
Zuko kissed his lips. “What happened to you really sucks,”
“I really liked that necklace,”
“I’m not talking about the necklace Yn,” he wrapped an arm around you, pulling you into an embrace, “You were attacked, why're you trying to brush that away?”
You resisted tears, reluctantly replying, “If I think about it too much, it’s like I’m there all over again.” You refused to meet his eyes, until a gentle hand guided your face back to his.
“Yeah, but you can’t just suppress it. You’re safe here, I’m with you,” despite the words being just that, words, they comforted you.
Your eyes were locked with him, bodies intertwined. He hardly clocked in what he was doing, until you pulled away. You crossed your arms, putting distance between you and him.
“I should probably get going- it’s late,”
“Do you have to?” And all his resolve faded, how could he say no?
“I-I mean. I-“
“If you don’t want to it’s okay I just-“
“No I get it it’s j-“ you continued to cut eachother off.
“It’s up to you,” you concluded.
“I’ll stay if it helps you,”
“It does,”
“Alright, I’ll stay here. I’ll be here.” He stayed next to the window while you sunk into the bed.
You hummed as the cool pillow kissed your skin.
Still, you couldn’t shake off the uneasy feeling in your stomach. You put a hand on your chest, eyes snapping to where Zuko is to both make sure he was there and that he was asleep. The fire lord was slumped on your desk chair, head falling back.
“You okay?” He asked.
You gasped, not aware he was awake in the first place.
“I’m fine,”
“Then why are you breathing so heavily?”
“Is a girl not allowed to breathe anymore?” He laughed, not because it was funny. Well, everything’s funny when it’s past 12.
“No seriously what’s up?”
“I just don’t feel safe, even if you’re in the room,” you sat up, pulling the other side of the blanket away to show the empty bed.
If your light was burning, you’d see the bright red that burned Zuko’s face, and no, it wasn’t his scar. The thought of being in a bed with you, that close. It shocked him to his core. He knew he was kind of an idiot in the love department, if it was a job, he’d be fired. But what he did know is that he’d stumble on his words and forget how to speak if he got into the bed.
“Please?” You gave him that smile, and how his knees almost buckled below him just at the sight of it, how could he resist?
A different colour of blush gnawed carefully at his neck, tinting the already present one a darker shade of red.
“Yeah okay,” stiffly, he joined you under the sheets. Engraving the image of you next to him, nightwear making you look like a movie he’d spend eternity watching. He clenched his jaw, trying to stay focused.
Again, all efforts simply ditched him as you laid your head on his chest. You used your arms to guide his around your waist, the other your lips. You gave him the gentle-est of pecks, almost just a touch, on his wrist, resting it against your cheeks. The spot burned with warmth, a trail of goosebumps exploring the rest of his arms.
“Thank you Zuko,” but it wasn’t just a thank you Zuko. See, maybe he was delusional, but something was different.
Maybe it was the way you were looking at him, if you gave him those eyes more frequently, he’d bend to your every will. The sweet smile you dawned pushing against his arm, he wished it would leave a mould, a mark, anything, to remember this moment.
Gently, you put his hand onto your neck, and sighed. As you drifted off into a safe, sound slumber, Zuko wondered what it would take for it to all happen again.

‘Flour boy’- Zuko x female!reader

An: HIYA! *gives piece she started a year ago* muah <3
Summary:
Yn is a baker at the royal palace, and Zuko just wants fruit tarts. Chaos ensues.
Warnings: arguments, Zuko is an idiot.
Tumblr media
After a long night at the kitchen, you decided to dismiss the other staff. The fire lord usually doesn’t ask for food at 12 am, so their leave was permitted.
“Bye Yn!” Jin yelled to you.
“Bye!” You replied a bit late, being so tired from all the chaos of the day, so only the empty room heard you.
Sighing, you put back any ingredients and bowls that were left around. About an hour had passed before you were done. Carefully, you left the kitchen and headed to your quarters.
You awoke at some random hour of the night, looking around your room, trying to find out what woke you up. Then you heard another crash. Your eyebrows furrowed when you realised the source of the unknown ruckus was the kitchen. Quickly, you jumped out of bed and ran to the room. This intruder won’t be getting away with stealing. A knife in hand, you pushed the large doors and frantically looked around. Once you had located the target, who was covered head to toe in flour, you asked them one question:
“What are you doing in my kitchen?”
“Uhh see I-”
The figure cut themselves off as you neared, weapons held up defensively. Then, you noticed the damage, half of the platter of fruit tarts was gone! You dropped your knife and ran up to them, hand covering your gaping mouth.
“You ate them? You! What am I meant to do now? Present the firelord with half a batch of treats. You’re going to get me fired!” you started panicking whilst biting back tears at the thought of losing your beloved job.
“Actually I-”
“ZIP IT YOU CASPER LOOKING PAIN.”
His eyes widened in surprise as you ran around the kitchen, picking up an apron and tying it around your waist sloppily.
“You and I aren’t finished.” you waved your whisk accusingly as you passed him.
“I don’t think it’s necessary-” he pointed to the ingredients.
“Oh yeah me neither, I’d prefer to live on the streets, wouldn’t you?”
Again, your quick response caught him off guard, effectively silencing him. Another figure walked into the room.
“Yn, what on Earth are you doing?”
“Don’t worry about it, go back to bed, I already said you were dismissed.”
“Are you sure? I-I can help!”
“No, I can manage. Get your butt back to bed” You shot a playful smile.
“Uh, so not my help, but theirs?”
“Flour boy here isn’t helping, he’s my next hate crime.” you winked at Jin, your friend, and smiled maliciously at ‘Flour boy’.
‘Flour boy’ gulped.
“Well good luck buddy.” Jin snickered before leaving the kitchen.
“First, you wake me up, then you eat my fruit tarts, next you wake my staff up. You’ve got one hell of a day coming pal.”
You popped the fresh batch into the preheated oven, taking off your oven mitts and shifting your attention to the teenager (?) standing before you.
“Can you teach me?”
Your expression morphed from shock, to amusement, to laughter. You were grabbing your knees and wiping imaginary tears. Suddenly you went all serious.
“You’re hilarious,”
DING! The oven made a noise, stopping ‘Flour boy’ before he could speak. You bent over carefully, removing the treats from the machine and placing them on a counter. Then, you rapidly made your way to the pantry, grabbing fine sugar from one of the shelves. Back to the tarts, you sprinkled it lightly on every one of them, and placed them carefully on a plate. You smiled at your creation, and placed it on a cart. Finally done.
You turned your attention once again to ‘Flour boy’, who was eyeing the fruit tarts.
“They look amazing.”
“They’re not for you, hun” You smiled before reaching back for your knife, shoving it into your pocket.
Folding your arms, you eye’d the person.
“I’m sorry for eating the fruit tarts,”
A sigh fell from your lips.
“Not accepted Flour boy”
“I have a name you know.”
“I don’t care.”
“I think you might,”
“I’m not gonna listen to someone who is entirely encased in flour, Flour boy.” You laughed as you looked him up and down.
Colour rose to his cheeks and he darted out of the kitchen. You laughed as you watched the figure leave.
You walked back to your room, stumbling from tiredness. Once you reached your bed, you practically passed out.
--
3 hours of the night were slept by you. Safe to say, exhausted didn’t even begin to describe you, however you still had a job (no thanks to that idiot) to fulfil.
You got dressed in something that wasn’t your pyjamas, and made your way to the kitchens. You waved to the staff and began your day.
The boys™ POV:
“Sokka, why are we here again?”
“I wanna see if the shipment has any snacks.”
Zuko scoffed as he looked around the deck, which was now being unloaded. It was nice not being so easily recognised, since they were out of the professional outfits.
“Is it just flour?” Aang said, confused.
“Yeah Zuko why’d you just get flour.”
“I didn’t do anything? At Least, I don’t remember ordering a bunch of,” a servant passed by holding a bowl of flour. “Bowls? Of flour.”
“You’re weird.” Sokka shrugged.
“Why didn’t they ship it in boxes?” a voice said from far in front of them.
Zuko’s eyes immediately widened, he recognised who it belonged to - Yn.
He did not want to be recognised, and was definitely panicking.
Zuko stumbled on his words, trying to inform his friends they needed to leave. It was ineffective of course, but worth a shot. Eventually, Yn had gotten too close for comfort - what if she recognised his physique? He couldn’t take the chance. Quickly, he turned around, failing to notice Yn due to his overthinking - who was behind him leading the shipments. He slammed into her, flour jumping from the bowl laid in her hands and puffing into the air - successfully dusting both their faces.
Back to second person
You blinked twice comically, before your brows furrowed.
“CAN’T I CATCH A BREAK!”
“Hey that rhymed!” Sokka chimed in, getting ignored.
Zuko laughed nervously, his arm rubbing the back of his neck.
“How are you always covered in flour?”
“Luck.”
“Seems unlucky,” you smirked.
“Yeah well, it’s not my fault you were behind me.” he shrugged.
You gasped dramatically, flipping the bowl of flour onto his head.
“HUH?” Aang yelled - again ignored.
“So, your job?”
“Oh yeah. Phew! I was in the clear.” you smiled, before narrowing your eyes, “no thanks to you jerkface,”
“HEY YN CAN YOU STOP TERRORISING THEM AND HELP OUT,”
“COMING!” you replied, walking away quickly, sending a wink at Zuko.
That night, you stayed later in the kitchen, preparing yourself a snack. As you danced around happily, grabbing the sugar from the cabinets to top the cake you made - no special occasion, you just wanted a taste of home. Picking up the platter, you placed it on the island, sitting down. As you picked up your fork, you suddenly lost vision - someone turned off the lights. Hastily, you picked up your trusty pocket weapon, as well as an arm up in case you needed to bend - and carefully walked to the lightswitch.
“Actually, can you not?”
Your body jolted as you turned to see ‘flour boy’, a sigh escaping your shaky form.
“Man, what kind of entrance was that. Made me think I was gonna die.”
“Sorry,” he laughed, “I didn’t mean any harm.”
“Why’d you close the light anyways?”
“Don’t want you to recognise me,”
“Fair enough,” you shrugged, propping your elbows on the island.
Flour boy jumped up onto the table, sitting criss-cross like a child.
“So what brings you here.”
“I just wanted to talk I guess.”
“About…?”
“The firelord.”
Your body went back into fight or flight, was this an assassin? He was a damn stupid one then.
“It’s not what you think. It’s just - I’m new here.”
“What’s your job?”
“I’m a friend of his.”
“The fire lord has friends? Shocker.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Dunno. He seems… weird.”
“Weird how?”
“Well, I can’t really explain it - but he seems like he has no friends.”
“What?”
You laughed, relaxing again. You jumped onto the counter next to Flour boy, and swung your legs.
“I mean he’s like, too good to be true. Gives me weird vibes like- like somehow he’s secretly evil.”
“Aha,” he nodded, confused. “What about him is too good to be true?”
“This isn’t a slumber party.”
“I mean it could be.”
“Are you saying you want to sleep with me, flour boy?”
“Well- NO WAIT NOT LIKE THAT!”
“Wait here.” you jumped off the counter laughing and gave him a flour pack.
“It’s expired anyways - just do your thing so I can turn on the lights.”
So he poured it onto himself and you flicked the light on.
“Better.”
“Anyways,” he rolled his eyes, “I wanna know how his staff see him.”
“Hmm. He seems nice.”
“Nice?”
“The firelord’s always been a good man to us. I think. Plus he’s always so gentle and caring.” you said, lying down on the counter.
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah. But you know what’s the best thing about him?”
“His personality?”
“No try again.”
“His… Job?”
“How are you so dense, oh my god.”
“His humour?”
“Oh my god he’s funny too? Damn.”
“What is it then?”
“His face.”
Zuko flushed.
“He just has this complex, it’s like. I can’t explain it. He has this jaw, straight up looking like it was sculpted, and his eyes. I’ve only ever gotten a few looks but - he has these amber or brown eyes - can’t remember - I feel like I could get lost in them.” you smiled lovingly, before shaking your head.
You opened your mouth to say something, turning to Flour boy, only to see him staring at you. Your words got caught in your throat as you recognised his pupils, your jaw falling slack.
“No. way.”
“Hi.”
“You’re the firelord.” you said, more confirming to yourself than to him.
“I think your eyes are gorgeous,” he whispered.
He jumped off the counter and walked in front of you - a boost of confidence running through his veins. Zuko stood right in front of you.
Your hands rose and found placement on his face. The firelord leaned into your touch, which reminded you of a kitten - longing for affection. You brought your hands up to his flour filled hair, and lifted up to triangles on either side - resembling cat ears. Hearing you laugh, he opened his eyes, face scrunching at the sudden change in mood- why were you laughing?
“You’re still the same dork.” you smiled, resting your forehead against his.
“Hopefully your dork?”
“Keep flirting like that and I’ll fall in love with you.” you said, but before you could continue, you felt his lips on yours.
His muscled arms trailed up your back, before pulling you closer to him - on the exact tip of the counter. You clutched onto his hair, kissing back with so much passion. His lips moved perfectly in sync with yours, as you desperately begged for this moment to never end. Your lips parted, he leaned back to take a breath, throwing his head back. Your head slumped against his chest, feeling his whole torso rack as he let out a low laugh.
“Still a dork?” he said, looking up.
“The biggest in the world,” you grinned, lifting your head up and wrapping your arms around his neck. “But you’re my dork.”
He leaned into your embrace, and you pecked his lips.
Definitely not how you planned your day, but still, it ended in the best way possible.

‘Watergirl & Fireboy’- Zuko x female!reader
Masterlist <3
An: GOOD DAY FRIENDS. AHHH. tbh this is my best title yet.
I'm not sure what you meant by the forgotten one, but if you want to resend another ask, I can write you something again <3
(Your english was pretty good tho anon! good job!)
Summary:
Water bender gf firebender bf, yes. (Fn is fire Nation I used that at some point haha)
Warnings: mild comic spoilers.
Tumblr media
Dating Zuko is super wholesome.
And the dynamic of water and fire is so chaotic
At first, it was a bit of a shocker, as you’re complete opposites
But also made sense
Opposites attract
Anyways
Honestly nothing interesting happens in the gAang part of this story so I’m going to slide right past it
Fire lord and his lady
Notice the his
You’re not married yet haha
So you’re just his girlfriend for the time being as he’s adjusting
The peeps of the fn are definitely surprised
And not happy
Why is there a water SCUM here 🤨🤚
Some like the idea
Like ‘oooh diversityyy’
But others like the new ozai society opt to say you suck
Smh
It’ll be a super new concept
I’m talking a mixed wedding
I’m talking a mixed wedding
For example
The ring or whatever would have aspects from your culture as well as his
For example a blue dragon, pretty cute idea
He definitely had Sokka/Katara’s help with it though
For fighting and stuff, you guys are the dream team.
I mean like
Water and fire
Ugh goals
But yeah
Y’all are a force to be reckoned with yk?
In the palace, water tribe decor would for sure be incorporated
Some blue some red some dragons some penguins etc
It’d be such a vibe
Other rulers now not only look down on him because he is a CHILD, they now also feel superior as he married someone from outside his nation
Katara and Sokka would probably take on your protective siblings role.
So like, Zuko would get lectured anytime he was annoying to you
He’s just a baby-
Sparring would be kinda fun
Cuz like fire v water
Like you do the octopus arms and he’s like shooting at you
All in good fun ofc
And training
You would probably have an important role in his life
Like his advisor
So your next to him in all those boring meeting he has to sit through
You accompanied him on the search for his mom
We’re ignoring the promise comic because that's not my baby, he kinda was weird in that one?
Yikers 😒
Travelling to the watertribe would be so funny because you are more used to it so can like wear less coats but Zuko’s got his AND your coats all piled up and looks like a little marshmallow 😩
The watertribe siblings would 100% make fun of him
Trying each others foods like culture wise would be such a blast
Like he has some water tribe delicacies and you the same with fire nation
He would be evil and give you the ones he doesn’t like too just to see your cute face get annoyed
He’s secretly evil guys
The fact that you’re like always cold and he’s always WARM is funny, because he would heat you up, But you
Being the little gremlin you are
😈.
Place your COLD hands on his stomach or arms and stuff and he like shivers.
“Hey Yn did yOU - STOP” literally squealing
Anyways, yall opened up new opportunities for biracial marriages in the fire nation and water tribes. 😌
But yeah, fireboy and watergirl
Tumblr media
An: This was so short and written late at night and yeah okay I’m tired. As always, hope you enjoyed reading, SEE YA! <3
