Description: There are many names that people seem to have for Caspian, but none are their own. “The Cursed One”, “The Blind Horror”, or just simply “that one fae from Terrovania that scares the shit out of me”. But whether they fit any of these labels is up for debate by everyone but themself. In reality, Caspian just wants some friends. Like please give this poor fae some friends, they’re not gonna leech your soul right out of you…or if they do, they’ll give it back.

Backstory: Born in Briar Valley to two loving parents, the fae that would later be known as Caspian lived their childhood in relative happiness and stability. However, this was all interrupted one day when a guest arrived, claiming to be a “friend” of their mother. Unbeknownst to Caspian, their mother was once a powerful witch, and this “friend” felt threatened by this power. The guest attempted to put a curse on Caspian’s mother but they missed and accidentally cursed young Caspian instead. This would alter the course of Caspian’s fate for the rest of eternity.

Now this curse was not a regular one, conjured from the depths of Tartarus, Hell, or some other dark dimension, with the intent to drain a person of all of their livelihood and render them unable to be around others. This curse has no specific name but is said to be a “fate worse than death”. However, depending on the person, the curse can mutate and change because it is so powerful, thus also very unpredictable. In Caspian’s case, the curse gave them large horns that look similar to marble, milky white eyes, and drained their skin of color. Corpse-like, one could call it. The curse also gave them a condition called “draining”, which would soon become Caspian’s unique magic.

Caspian’s mother tried to do everything in her power to reverse this and cure her child, but nothing seemed to work. She eventually left on a long journey in attempt to find something that was rumored to cure any ailment, including magical ones, but she never returned. Caspian was left with their father, who was dumbfounded as to what he should do and how to continue raising Caspian. Years flew by and Caspian’s father remarried and had Caspian’s half-siblings. The family slowly grew more and more distant from Caspian, while the rest of the world seemed to do the same thing. Whether it be because of their ghostly appearance, or the rumors that seemed to lurk in every corner about them, Caspian was left quite alone.

Caspian, being a fairly gentle being, has rarely used this spell, only in certain emergencies or when they feel highly threatened. They have almost always returned the soul back.

• Caspian’s name is not their given name, but instead a nickname that came about from their white eyes and horns, because Caspian means “white” and of course people from Briar Valley have to be extra when it comes to nicknames. They liked the nickname better than their actual name, so they adopted it many years ago. They can barely remember their original name now.

• Their height surprisingly was not a side effect of the curse, but just them having the tall genes.

• Their voice is surprisingly quite deep and isn’t as light and airy as some people may imagine it to be

i need to mull it over but i think that ending was good! i wanna get my thoughts out before reading anyone else’s take on it, and i think that in itself is a good sign. it gave more to chew on than i expected it would.

i’ll avoid stating the obvious save to say that, for all it cleared the (very low) bar of not actively queerbaiting (like eg euphonium did), for a show that let two supporting charas be gay in canon, like, let our mains smooch cowards. (& when chisato calls takina “partner” it’s 相棒 which reads solidly “partner-in-crime” to me (and not in the otherside picnic way), so that doesn’t count.)

i enjoyed takina’s line: 諦めてたことから始めてみたらどうですか？ / “start with something you had given up on?”. if there’s a way to interpret that as meaning anything but “yourself” (”your own life”), i dont wanna know it.

i’m thinking about how mika had to be the one to, shall we say, extract the new heart for chisato. i don’t think there’s any systematic injustice angle there, it’s just about how the older generation must make sacrifices (his own pacifism, let alone his love) to create a better world for the newer (chisato alive). it fell to someone who could do that selflessly - unlike either main for whom it would be selfish - and i thought that was poignant.

but lets talk about majima.

majima, i think, has changed. earlier i said his danganronpa ass shit felt flat and now i wonder if that was on purpose to set up a contrast to now. it wasn’t when he let chisato have a break in the middle of a fight that surprised me - it was always clear he was interested in her as more than just an enemy combatant (and for different reasons as yoshimatsu’s more obviously evil one) - but i didn’t figure out why until his “bomb” turned out to be fireworks. that surprised me. he gives chisato this whole speech about how violent protest is the only way to oppose the state, and chisato counters with the other side of the catch-22 - her truth - that you can’t get ahead by hurting people. but this time, majima wasn’t there to destroy to begin with. he’s seen how DA just covers up his earlier naive protests with propaganda and he knows chisato is someone else the system has failed. having this conversation with chisato - presenting the catch-22 to her - recruiting her - was his goal.

admittedly there’s a few holes in this interpretation like he’s seen still danganronpa-ly egging on a random citizen at the end, and he himself isn’t characterized at all - we don’t know how his own backstory at all - i don’t like him at all! - but i don’t think you can explain his audible to fireworks as anything other than a second season hook. i don’t think you can interpret the “lycoris crisis” movie poster bit - literally propaganda - as a happy end. maybe we won’t get that season irl, but if we do, i really hope it delivers on what the fireworks seem to hint at and we get to see majima (well characterized) and chisato (goes on unambiguous dates with her unambiguous girlfriend in her free time) dismantle DA together.

Toonami Weekly Recap 03/09/2024

Ninja Kamui EP#05 - Higan misses his chance to enter and Zai warns him that he has merely delayed his death before turning back into AUZA City. Elsewhere in a ghost town, Mike meets up with a former AUZA employee named Jason Cardenas who turns out to have insider knowledge into accessing AUZA's servers. In the city, the clan's top brass decide to willingly let Higan in to directly confront him and plan a timed fireworks festival to distract the city's population. Mike and Jason successfully hack into AUZA's servers and uncover a list of fake identities being used to plant operatives before suddenly being denied access. After being cornered by mercenaries the two manage to escape the location by car but are chased down, eventually crashing off the side of the road. In the city, Higan slashes down hordes of ninjas and mercenaries before confronting four top brass ninjas donning armor suits. Higan attempts to directly confront Yamaji, but the four brass ninjas beat him around even after Higan attempts his secret art. Laying defeated on the ground, Higan is about to be beheaded by Zai before one of the brass ninjas rescues him and escapes.

Lycoris Recoil EP#08 - Another day, another dollar: Yoshimatsu explains to Himegawa, his secretary, that the Institute determines the future of people with special abilities. He asks her to take care of Chisato. As LycoReco is incurring monetary losses, Takina takes over the finances. She creates a new menu item, encourages using fewer resources during missions, and attends charitable causes with Chisato. However, due to the café's success, Chisato can't attend her medical checkups. She finally does, but is cornered by Majima at her house. He retells his assault on the Radio Tower and how she stopped him, revealing he possesses supernatural hearing. A shocked Chisato says the Alan Institute supports people for good purposes, but Majima reveals they only support people whose abilities may be used for killing. As he leaves, he is engaged by Takina, but manages to escape. Back at the café, Takina and Chisato reflect on what has happened since Takina's arrival. She gifts Chisato a dog keychain, and she learns Chisato's reluctance to attend checkups is due to her fear of needles. She attends her checkup, but is instead immobilized by Himegawa, who prepares to remove her artificial heart, just as a worried Takina rushes to her aid.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Entertainment District Arc EP#16 (42) - Defeating an Upper Rank Demon: Gyutaro neutralizes the wisteria and uses his Blood Demon Art to fend off Tengen and Tanjiro, before grabbing Hinatsuru. Despite his exhaustion, Tanjiro combines his Hinokami Kagura and Water Breathing, unleashing a very fast charge that stuns the demon and saves her. Tengen joins his attempt to slice off Gyutaro's head, while Zenitsu and Inosuke continue to fend off Daki's obi. Gyutaro stops their blades and unleashes his Blood Demon Art again, forcing Tengen to throw himself and Gyutaro away to save Hinatsuru and Tanjiro. With Tengen fighting Gyutaro alone, Tanjiro joins his friends in facing Daki, where he and Zenitsu open the way for Inosuke, allowing him to behead her. He runs away with Daki’s head to prevent reattachment but Gyutaro suddenly stabs him from behind and retrieves her head. Tanjiro looks for Tengen and sees him wounded and motionless. Devastated for not being able to help them in time, he freezes; Zenitsu pushes him off the roof to save him from an incoming obi attack.

To a _____ was a “lotus” caught a’fire. She opened at midnight, her spindly petals the color of his blood that she colored her lips. A lily in the night. Lycoris from the tick-tock of the clock. She budded in the clear skies of the night. What started as the unfurling of a flower became a vibrant red blossom; a firework, a pretty, hand-sized blaze. Burning from the inside--matchstick petals; red-shimmer opals; her jewelry shattered piece by piece and decorated her skin with glassy perforations. Colored so pretty. She thinks of this feeling so beautiful, so pretty, she could not help but smile. Like a crazy-person.

The two continued taking a long stroll through the winding path.

"Good. That's a good answer, I'd expect nothing less from an adventurer such as yourself; let alone one who shares the same Vision as I."

It seemed the two felt a strong sense of camaraderie with each other as they held the same ideals, only seeming to differ in how extreme they followed through to those beliefs.

"Huh? The Lantern Ri—Oh!—that's the true purpose for your visitation, isn't it?" Xiao said, now beginning to fully grasp the situation at hand.

He walked back a bit and leaned himself against the nearest fence post on the side of the road, "Sorry, but you can forget the offer—I don't partake in such festivities, it's not appropriate when the lives of others are at stake from malevolent creatures without end; there would be no point in bringing me along as my attention would be solely focused on keeping a watchful eye. Besides, the crowds of people would be... a distraction."

As much as Xiao was curious to experience the Lantern Rite festival up close and personal, he knew deep down it could not be done as demonic energy was particularly strong during this time.

"The fireworks are large enough to be seen even from this distance believe it or not, and you seem like you can really handle yourself; I'm sure you can figure out a way to balance your sense of duty with your normal festivities. But if you ever do find yourself in trouble, speak my name."
