You Can't Control Everything

It popped into my head this morning lounging in bed with a coffee that I wanted to document this journey. When I was younger I religiously kept a journal but I don't know, there's something easier about typing than there is writing. Also my handwriting is shocking.

I am 5 weeks and 6 days pregnant.

On April 1st (ha!) while my husband and I were doing a weekly food shop I just grabbed a box of pregnancy tests off the shelf. Earlier in the day we had taken our dog to the beach and I was complaining to him about needing to pee so often. Earlier in the week it was how sore my breasts were. My period was due in a few days, but I thought "I'll get them to confirm it's nothing."

I didn't even tell him what I was doing, I was so convinced the test would be negative. Like I said, my period wasn't even late yet. I genuinely believed I was checking to confirm it was nothing. But withing seconds there it was, that second line. Positive.

I thought about calling him upstairs but thought no, I should show him. So I took the test downstairs to where he was making our lunch and just mumbled, "It's positive."

My hands were shaking and at first he didn't believe me. Ever calm, he suggested we eat and then I could take the second one just in case it was a false positive. The panic was coming off me in waves.

We ate, I peed, more lines.

So straight into the car we hopped to buy more. And after getting two more tests (different brands, just in case!) we wandered around the shops a little while I calmed down and tried to take it in.

I wanted children, and had gotten my IUD removed the year before. But then I had health problems. We both decided it would be best to wait, give it until the summer when all my tests were done and then start trying.

Were we always careful? No. Did I foolishly think that there was just absolutely no way I could get pregnant sleeping with someone unprotected ? Sure did!

So yes I'm married, we own our home, I have a good job, health insurance, my relationship is strong. And even with everything lined up I panicked, because I hadn't decided to get pregnant.

That lack of control over the timing, even though there was what, four months difference? Between when I did get pregnant and when I wanted to. I was freaking out walking round those shops.

Until he spotted a small avocado Teddy and said "Look, it's you."

I cried. I cried so much. Being pregnant is something I had desperately wanted for years and held off on for health reasons and now here it was. It had happened, and I finally accepted it and thought "I'm so lucky. It worked. I got pregnant."

All the fear melted away and for the first time in so long I just felt completely at ease. In those few minutes crying in the middle of a clothes shop while my husband held me it all slotted into place in my mind. We were going to have a baby. And it's going to be ok.

So we bought the Teddy.

33 and a half weeks down, 6 and a half to go. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Taking a nice stroll to the doctors office this afternoon. Andddd I’ve left myself plenty of time. What I used to be able to do in 15 minutes now takes me at least 25. Emphasis on at least! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s cool and drizzly here but I am so not complaining because at least we’re not buried in snow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And speaking of snow, I’m breaking out the Christmas decorations when I get home. Saturday, 19 June 2021. "The Test"

It was such a miracle, yet a surprising fact. I exactly knew when was the last time I got my period last month and it was late 4 days from before. So I decide to check it with a pregnancy test pack this morning and I was freeze. The line was two. Clearly two, which means that I'm pregnant.

My heart was full with joy, excitement, and also fear. Fear about can I raise this child as good as I want? And also with this pregnancy, I know that my mother would ask me to stay with her l, which is against my husbands will. Even though we already discussed and agree that all the pregnant ceremony and the labour time will be at my mother's house. So I can be focused with the baby without thinking about house duty.

At the noon, there's a little blood came out. Some people and articles said it was normal during the first weeks of pregnancy. And there's no doctor available on the weekend, so we decided to have a visit at Monday.

People we let to know first was my uncle. Fortunately, we had a schedule to visit him because Hubby wants to take my plant and ask for some another plant collection there. My uncle hold himself to not burst into tears, but I know that he felt a bunch of joy inside. And it makes me want to shade a joy tears. He warn me to be careful, because it's my first pregnancy, the first grandchildren for him. My aunt suggest a female doctor for I told her I'm a little bit uncomfortable with a male gynecologist. After that, hubby told his parents this news by phone and they gave some advice for me like eating well, drink a milk for pregnant mom, and also don't force myself too tired.

We were so excited but also confused with this fact. However, we still embrace it with a lot of joy that now, the two soon will be three.....
