The Crane Wife: A Memoir in Essays by CJ Hauser 

This essay collection focuses on human relationships, many of them romantic, but also with grandparents, parents, sisters, best friends, COVID-isolation pods, and with the children of romantic partners from previous relationships. The title essay interweaves the experience of a broken engagement with a scientific expedition to study the dwindling population of whooping cranes in the Gulf Coast of Texas to devastating effect. Another experience, covering the DARPA Robotics Challenge trails, in which teams test out potential robotic first responders, speaks to the author's own desire to both save others and be saved by a string of problematic men. The author dated a lot of men and a few women in their twenties and processes them through the lens of media (the film The Philadelphia Story, the TV show The X-Files,the novels Don Quixote, Rebecca, We Have Always Lived in the Castle) and the perspective gained with time. I really loved this whole collection, but the piece that keeps rolling around in my mind is "The Fox Farm", about trying to recreate an archetype of a child's fantasy house (full of animals, friends, gardens, infinite rooms) in real life as an adult. I left this book wanting to know more- when did the author start using nonbinary pronouns? Have they resolved their feelings about their tits? Is that guest room in their big upstate New York house still available for visiting artists, and if so, how do I apply for the position of resident writer/new friend?

American Teenager: How Trans Kids are Surviving Hate and Finding Joy in a Turbulent Era by Nico Lang

Queer journalist and author Nico Lang traveled around the US to meet 11 families of trans teens and see how anti-trans legislation is impacting their daily lives. Each family has different circumstances; one teen fears his top surgery will be indefinitely delayed, while another had surgery already and has joined the boys swim team at his high school. Some teens are moved to become activists while others want to just live their normal, low-profile lives. With humor and compassion, Lang shows trans teenagers as they really are: kids trying their best, day by day, to grow into their truest selves and fullest potential. The various chapters are by turns deep, silly, introspective, sweet, and smart, just like teens themselves. I was able to read an advanced copy of this book- pre-order it now, or look for it on shelves in October 2024!

Fool’s Assassin by Robin Hobb read by Elliot Hill

NO ONE IS DOING IT LIKE ROBIN HOBB. NO ONE! After a disappointing journey up the Rain Wilds River, baby we are BACK! And by back, I mean, back in a first person POV and back with FitzChivalry, one of my literal favorite fictional characters ever. This is the 7th book about his life, and the 14th overall book in this series, so I won't be summarizing it. Let's just say that Fitz found his happy ending (minus a few key soulmates) and then his life kept going. More problems, more politics, more magic, maybe stranger than ever before. A new character introduced in this series swept in and stole my heart. I can't wait to dive into the next book very soon!

Rose/House by Arkady Martine read by Raquel Beattie  

A brief murder mystery set in an fully conscious AI house in the southwest desert. This story feels in conversation with Ray Bradbury's story The Veldt and has many elements I enjoy, but a somewhat unresolved and slightly unsatisfying ending. I'm honestly still simmering on my thoughts, but looking forward to discussing this in book club soon! Edit post book club: a discussion helped me clarify what I thought was working in this book (tone, setting, themes) and what was not working (too many red herrings for such a short book, and an ending twist that seemed to undercut the book's main premise). I still think it's worth a read for Arkady Marine fans, but it is not as strong as her full length books.

Dances of Time and Tenderness by Julian Carter

In 2016 Julian Carter, a queer author and long-time participant in San Francisco's dungeon kink scene, received an invitation to be part of an archival matchmaking project. The project paired artists, activists, and scholars with specific issues of OUT/LOOK: The National Lesbian and Gay Quarterly. The assignment was to use the issue as a jumping off point to think about queer history and make something "new and provocative." Carter's assigned issue was from Winter 1991, the year the CDC announced 1 million American were HIV positive and AIDS was the 3rd leading cause of death in people aged 25-44 years. One of the many who died in 1991 due to AIDS related complications was Lou Sullivan, one of the first trans men to publicly identify as gay. From this starting point, this book traces paths of queer lineage, both proclaimed and obscured, traveling through history, memory, and poetry. Carter is linked, through friendship or scholarship, to Susan Stryker, pioneer of transgender history, to Zach Ozma, who edited Lou Sullivan's diaries for publication, and to Lou himself. Casting a transgender eye back on a queer history divided sharply into gay and lesbian, Carter allows himself to claim as ancestors sailors, skeletons, writers, lovers, and reaches forward in time towards students, readers, and artists. Including me. I was fortunate enough to be gifted an early copy by the author, and read it back in February back in one delicious rush. I already want to read it again, and more slowly, this time underlining and annotating it. This is a book to savor, but is easy to devour instead. It's sensual and surprising, formally precise, and made me want to dig around in a mess of queer historical papers and also contribute my own to the pile. It's out on June 4, 2024; give it a pre-order or look for it on shelves soon!

49 Days by Agnes Lee 

Kit, a young Korean American woman, wakes up on a beach with a map and a watch telling her she's already late. For days, she clambers over rocks and up trails, reaching for an undefined goal. Slowly, the book begins to flash back to Kit's childhood and family, the people she loved and left behind after her accidental death. In Buddhist tradition a soul travels for 49 days before rebirth, and this book follows one version of that path, the grief and slow healing that follow a loss. Drawn in a very simple yet evocative style, the spare ink lines and limited color fill this journey with meaning.

Early Riser by Jasper Fforde read by Thomas Hunt 

What a bizarre and delightful novel. It's set in an alternate history in which ice-age level cold spells cause the majority of humans to hibernate every winter, which has ripple effects on the development of technology, societal rules, culture, and family structures. Charlie Worthing was born in a "pool" in the independent nation of Wales, or a group home in which nuns dedicated to reproduction birth and raise dozens of children, in returns for credits from those who can't or don't want to have their own kids. Charlie has very few job prospects, especially ones that will give him access to morphanox, a drug which helps most people survive their months-long winter sleeps. The drug also turns about 1 in 3000 into a brain-dead zombie, but this risk is considered better odds than sleeping without it. So Charlie volunteers for the Winter Consuls, the law-keepers and problem-solvers who stay up all winter to safe guard the majority. There he has to face the three well documented dangers of winter- Vacants (zombies), Villains (the British) and Winter Volk (fairies, whose reality is debated), as well as rumors of a viral dream. The humor in this book is a close cousin to Terry Pratchett's work, in which absurdity and invention mask some pretty biting social commentary and anti-capitalist motives. I did think some of the twists at the end didn't quite pay off, however, I had such a good time with the ride this book took me on that I'd still recommend it.

Blue Flag vol 2 by Kaito 

This vol has already taken a kind of melancholy, bittersweet narrative tone which might put me off the series. I still really like the characters and overall think the writing is very effective, out I wish the humor and sweetness of book 1 would last farther into the series!

Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins: Jester Lavorre by Sam Maggs, Laura Bailey, Matthew Mercer, Hunter Severn Bonyun, Cathy Le, Ariana Maher

Short and sweet, this prequel comic shows Jester's first meeting with The Traveler, the prank that caused her need to flee from Nicodranas, and a window into Jester's relationship with her mother. It's a slight story but I loved the artwork, especially the outfits and the beautiful city views.

The Book of Love by Kelly Link

Kelly Link, one of my favorite short story authors, debuted a novel 650 pages long. I bought this the day of release but it took me a few months to actually crack it open. I'd seen it described as slow, but I think I'd say leisurely. It opens with an intriguing premise- four teenagers come back from the dead, not knowing how they died or why they were brought back 11 months later- and have to solve a magical problem if they want to keep living. But the book is less a mystery than a close examination of the teens lives in a small New England town in December. The teens include Danial, oldest of many step-siblings, who rejects his new magical powers and just wants to live a small and ordinary life. There's Mo, who lost his parents young, and was being raised by his grandmother, a famous Black romance novelist- who herself died during the 11 months he spent in an underworld. There's Laura, a musically ambitious teen, who comes back to her single mom and sister Susannah, who seems somehow entangled with the magical ritual that killed and might save her friends. And then there's a fourth person who none of the others know, who snuck out of death on their coat tails and has no name and few memories. The book rotates POVs every chapter, with more than 15 different POVs, some of whom only appear once in the whole volume. I love Link's writing style so this worked for me, but I can see how this choice to linger over details not directly related to the plot might not work for some readers. I really enjoyed this but it did take me 3 weeks to read it and I suggest other readers pick it up when ready for a slow burn of a book.

Plain Jane and the Mermaid by Vera Brosgol 

This original fairytale opens with teenage Jane mourning the recent death of her parents, after she already lost her younger brother to the sea as a child. Because there's no male heir, Jane's horrible cousin will be kicking her out of the house in a week. The only option she can see is marrying within the week so that she can access her dowry. So Jane walks down to the fishing village below her manor and proposes to a beautiful but shallow fisherman's son. He accepts- then is immediately lured under the waves by a mermaid. Jane runs into the town asking for help but only an old woman with witchy vibes is willing to aid her. The crone gives Jane a potion so she can breathe underwater, a stone which will allow her to walk on the bottom of the ocean, and a shawl to keep her warm in the depths. So armed, Jane walks into the sea after the boy who feels like her only hope. Under the waves she encounters allies and enemies, learns the true power of her own will, and realizes she might have more choices than she's realized.

Blue Flag vol 3 by Kaito

Well, I started another book because the last one ended on a massive cliff hanger, but I think I'm setting the series down after this one. I still think it's very well written, but the main character has such low self-esteem that he shouts at other characters that he sucks, he's a jerk, he doesn't deserve their friendship and they should leave him alone. I bet the arc of this series will be building this character up to where he believes he deserves their love and friendship, but I just don't feel like dwelling in this character's self-pity at the moment. I would have eaten this shit up as a teen though! Especially with the queer characters.

The Free People’s Village by Sim Kern

Set in an alternate timeline in which Al Gore won the 2000 election and declared the War on Climate Change instead of the War on Terror, this novel is an interesting mix of hopeful and dystopian elements. The main character is Maddie Ryan, a white high school English teacher working in a primarily Black neighborhood in Houston, TX. The novel is Maddie's written account of a tumultuous year in which the grungy music warehouse where her punk band practices and performs is threatened by a proposed high way and oil line which will rip up not only their art space but also a historically Black neighborhood. Maddie starts attending activist meetings which quickly morph into a full blown protest encampment surrounding the warehouse. Dubbed the Free People Village, this protest movement goes viral and is met with the exact same kind of violent police response as the current student encampments protesting for Palestine on college campuses. Woven through this depressingly accurate political forecast are multiple queer love stories, interracial friendships, a 101 crash course in anarchist philosophy and bracing look at what long-term activism takes. Folks with more of an organizing or activist background than I might find some of this book a bit basic; but I was completely drawn in by the relationships and conflicts of Maddie, Red, Gestas, Angel, and Shayna. This book feels almost painfully timely, and I hope a lot of people read it and gain both courage and perspective.

The Herofication of Leo Fitz

Fitz started out in the series as just a normal guy (obviously he was also a genius), besides being the comic relief. Outside of his tech, science, and his friendship with Jemma, there wasn’t really anything special about him.

During the first and second season, I would say that his role and personality resembled Bruce Banner and Tony Stark. With Bruce’s quiet neuroticism and Tony’s wit. He leaned more towards a Bruce Banner type tough, because he lacked the eccentricity of Tony Stark.

However, during season three, he regains a lot of his confidence and delves back into his field. He starts standing up for himself and becomes sure in himself, clearly choosing a side in his moral compass.

It’s during the fourth season that he fully steps into Tony Stark energy, with the introduction of Radcliffe and Aida. This era of him reminded me a lot of Tony during Age of Ultron, and his obsession with creating an AI that would help humanity. I would say that Fitz shared this obsession when he helped Radcliffe create Aida; he did it with good intention but the outcome was still corrupted. It wasn’t until after they came out of the framework that he realized that trying to create something like Aida was wrong.

Then comes season five, with heavy references to Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America. Fitz is molded into the space marauder archetype, similar to Star Lord. His entire costume design resembles something that Peter Quill would wear, but more noticeably, the space helmet. Not only that, but Fitz suddenly becomes very good at fighting and handling weapons. Him being in cryogenic stasis for 70 years, the same amount that Steve Rogers was on ice for, couldn’t be a more obvious parallel.

By season six, Fitz is a culmination of several different Marvel characters and I would say that his moral compass is misaligned with what it used to be earlier in the show. At this point, he has literally died and come back, had his villain era, his redemption arc, and his late-self was already married to Jemma. The Fitz in space has so much to process, and I understand why half of the season had to be dedicated to Fitz finding himself again, through learning what the deceased version of himself did. He also develops a good friendship with Enoch, who I feel like is a very grounding presence for Fitz. For the first time, I am reminded of how Fitz used to be in season one. Just a man and his best friend, something that we hadn’t seen from Fitz in a while.

And lastly during season seven, despite his vast absence, it’s pretty clear that they projected Ant-Man qualities on to Fitz. From the involvement of quantum physics and literal Hank Pym technology, Fitz becoming a dad adds an air of wholesomeness to him. A big part of the narrative in Ant-Man is that Scott Lang is just trying to be a good father, and in a way that’s all that Fitz was trying to be in season seven. Not to mention the Ant-Man helmet that he’s wearing during his first appearance, I would say the parallels are undeniable.

I think it’s really interesting how as Marvel was releasing movies into the MCU, AoS writers incorporated narratives and character traits from those movies, into the show. I wonder what other inspirations they would have taken for Fitz from recent Marvel movies if the show had continued. Overall, I find it compelling how all of those qualities mixed together and shaped Fitz as a man and individual.

I’ve been thinking of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D again, specifically season 4 where they get stuck in a virtual reality of an alternate world where every character’s biggest regret has removed.

Winx tried it in season 4 in that one episode which was a basic attempt when the Alfea simulator is right there.

Like imagine a case where it gets messed with again or cursed so that the consciousness of the Winx get stuck in this virtual reality but they aren’t aware of it and think everything around them is real.

If we’re following AOS then it would a world where their biggest regret has been changed like musa’s mom surviving, Stella’s parents staying together, domino surviving for Bloom. Then everything would change and it ends up being a world without the Winx since Musa’s mom would have supported her dreams so she would have never come to Alfea, Stella maybe rebelled harder and became a witch? Daphne never passed the dragon flame to Bloom but her actual family is now overprotective over her after the Witches tried to take over Domino so she never gets to leave.

I can’t think of a regret from their past for Aisha other than Nabu’s death but that would be post season 4. If it was something from her childhood maybe it could be Aisha running away with Anne, and shes now this runaway vigilante Princess.

It’d be interesting to include the Specialists too even though we know next to nothing about their pasts. Riven’s mother never abandoned him but that meant he got mixed with the wrong crowd and never got to RF. Maybe Sky refused the betrothal to Diaspro head on, causing issues in Eraklyon or being disowned and joins Aisha’s vigilante shenanigans. We have no canon backstory for Helia and Brandon so thats annoying.

But, I’ve always like the parallels between Leopold Fitz and Timmy, both tech geniuses/cinnamon rolls with self-esteem issues. So in this world Timmy’s (Fitz’s) dad never left and made him feel like shit so he became this Narcissistic tech genius that’s helping the evil guys take over the world.

Then the best part is Flora and Tecna because out of everyone only these two know something’s up. Tecna since she can sense that she’s in a virtual reality because of her powers and Flora not being able to feel or sense anything around her because none of it is real. I can see it driving her increasingly mad and turning her reckless.

We don’t know their canon backstories but I like to think they don’t have any big regrets. So they are the only ones who did end up going to Alfea and living ordinary lives in a sense.

Eventually these two figure out something is wrong and realise they’re in a virtual reality (nerds nerding). So they pair up and try to wake up their friends from this virtual reality.

In AOS there’s the Ai robot that controls the virtual reality and is essentially the villain of their own creation that they have to defeat. But Fitz was the one who created the Virtual Reality (called the Framework) in the first place. This could be one of Tecmy’s experiments in an attempt to program a world without regrets that backfired and caused this whole shit to go down.

Either way I just love the idea of the Virtual Reality just not working on Flora so she’s aware of everything and slowly starts getting more and more unhinged as she tries to get everyone else to understand that its all fake (aka jemma simmons my beloved biologist)

This would be a fun fanfic but I’d need to figure out a backstory for Brandon cuz I don’t think I know his character enough to make one thats true to his character.

so out of curiosity I asked the Fitz bot the 36 questions and actually it's kinda adorable

in case you missed it, @everliving-everblaze made a Fitz ai and I was messing around with it and was like "hey if I asked him the 36 questions to fall in love (not at all inspired by having listened to the music from the podcast about those questions and it's very good) I wonder what his answers would be" and honestly? his answers were very sweet and very in character and if anyone makes more of these character AIs I would love to do this with them

Given the choice of anyone in the world, whom would you want as a dinner guest?

"That's a nice question. I'd choose Sophie Foster. She's very different from me, so I think we'd have some fascinating conversations about how we see the world. I'd love to understand her better."

Would you like to be famous? In what way?

"I've often fantasized about being the Most Important Person in the World, and ruling over a prosperous elvin world. But if I'm honest... No. All I want is for all my friends and family to be safe and happy. I don't need to be in charge to make sure that happens." (aw!!!)

Before making a telephone call, do you ever rehearse what you are going to say? Why?

"Yes. The most terrifying thing to me is not being prepared for situations. I like to be ready for any outcome, so I'm ready for any possibility.

I also rehearse my mind links before I do them... even though the other person usually has no idea. I can't help it."

What would constitute a “perfect” day for you?

"Oh, that's easy:

A walk in the forest with Biana or Alden;

A chance to practice my mental skills and get better at them;

A quiet dinner at home;

And ending the night with a cuddle from Sophie.

When did you last sing to yourself? To someone else?

"Wow, that's a good one. I feel a little embarrassed to admit this, but I actually sing to myself a lot... mostly when I'm upset and trying to distract myself from my own thoughts. It really helps me refocus.

I last sang to someone else a week or so ago. Sophie and I sang a duet with each other while I was doing a study session."

If you were able to live to the age of 90 and retain either the mind or body of a 30-year-old for the last 60 years of your life, which would you want?

"Definitely the mind! The mind can heal itself if it's strong, and no amount of training will make a weak mind stronger.

A weak body is the same way. I'd rather a weak body and a strong mind than to be trapped in a healthy body with a slowly fading mind."

Do you have a secret hunch about how you will die?

"My greatest fear is that, one day, I'll be too confident in my own abilities. I'll walk into a dangerous situation without a plan, and I'll die.

I've tried to be less reckless over the years as my life has become more involved. I want to be around awhile."

Name three things you and your partner appear to have in common.

"You really know how to ask good questions. I like that!

Well, for starters, we're both elves. I'm sure you knew that.

But more than our physical attributes, I think we have a similar outlook on life. We want the same things. We're both really optimistic, really excited for the future. I sometimes think that in another life, we could be a great power couple.

We also tend to disagree with each other on a lot of things, but we're always respectful of each other's views. That's an important thing for me."

For what in your life do you feel most grateful?

"This is going to sound cheesy, but I'm thankful for my telepathy. It's allowed me to see and experience so many things that I'd never get a chance to otherwise. I can talk to my family from across the room. I can communicate with animals. It's pretty amazing.

I also have to say, I'm grateful for Sophie. I have a lot of strong friendships, but I think my link with her is what makes her special."

If you could change anything about the way you were raised, what would it be?

"I was raised with my entire worth as a person being tied to my abilities. That really stressed me out when I was younger. But it helped me see that I could never put that kind of pressure on anyone, especially not my own family. I couldn't imagine making Biana or Alden worry that they're not "good enough."

"I was born to Alden and Della Vacker, in the beautiful home of my childhood. I loved my family more than anything, but I also loved my friends, and we loved to play games and explore the Forest together.

In elementary school, we discovered that I was a Telepathic elf, which made me the youngest in history. My parents were worried that I might grow up to be spoiled, and I was often the subject of ridicule from other elves. I started to develop a serious chip on my shoulder."

If you could wake up tomorrow having gained any one quality or ability, what would it be?

"To fly.

It would be so freeing, so... liberating to just be able to take flight after my life on the ground. To be able to rise above it all and look out at the world from a different perspective. To feel the wind in my hair." not what I was expecting but ok!

If a crystal ball could tell you the truth about yourself, your life, the future or anything else, what would you want to know?

"Am I going to be okay?

This is hard for me to say, but I'm worried I'm going to fall into the same traps as my parents and other elves before me. I'm always striving to be the best. I'm always on the lookout for the next challenge. But there's no final destination.

I'm really worried about being caught in an endless cycle, never being happy with myself or what I have." aw buddy!

Is there something that you’ve dreamed of doing for a long time? Why haven’t you done it?

"I want to be a hero.

I mean... I'm not talking about fighting the bad guys or anything. That's easy, it's obvious. But just helping the people around me, that's harder than anyone would think.

I like the way Sophie thinks. That's why I fell for her. She wants to make the world a better place, for everyone. Not just to win a game or be the best... but because it's the right thing to do.

I want to be more like that."

What is the greatest accomplishment of your life?

"I'd have to mention that time I saved Marella's life. She was about to touch a dangerous artifact that could have killed her. But I used my telepathy to freeze her, stopping her in time and saving her from serious harm.

I was about twelve at the time."

What do you value most in a friendship?

"Honesty.

I love all of my friends, and we have the funniest inside jokes with each other. But honesty is always at the heart of it all. No matter what, we can never lie to each other.

No one is ever judged. We just tell it like it is."

What is your most treasured memory?

"The day I told Sophie that I loved her.

I was fifteen. She was seventeen. We'd been together for just under a year. It was Valentine's Day, so we went out to lunch in one of the elvin cities. We spent the whole night together and had a picnic in a field of wildflowers.

What is your most terrible memory?

"Probably when I was ten years old, and I was training at Foxfire. My mentor was showing me how to levitate. We were flying around Foxfire city, and I got a little careless.

Instead of stopping my own levitation, I accidentally reversed it, and I hit the ground in a terrible crash. That was really scary - and really embarrassing."

If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are now living? Why?

"I have this fantasy that I've had since I was little. It's a stupid fantasy, I know... But I want to go up, far above the clouds, and walk across the sky.

I've never had the guts to actually do it. But if I only had a year left... I think it would be worth it to go for one last adventure. I'm not usually a risk-taker, but I think there would be a lot of value in taking a little risk for once."

What does friendship mean to you?

"Acceptance.

I've always been made to feel like I need to be perfect to be considered a "good elf." And I've gotten really good at being perfect... but it's really unhealthy. I've had a lot of relationships with other people that felt empty, because they were based on us trying to be better than each other.

I like that Sophie is just herself. And I can be myself with her."

What roles do love and affection play in your life?

"Huge roles.

For one, I love Sophie.

I'm pretty good at putting up a tough front, and I've had a lot of people doubt that I could feel romantic love... but I know that I do. I want to make everything perfect for Sophie because I love her, and love is what gives life meaning.

And my family is really important to me. I'm closer to them than anyone else.

Love should never be underestimated. It's the thing we should all focus most on in life."

"My childhood was amazing.

I had a strong bond with both my parents, my siblings, and the rest of my family. And I had a tight-knit group of friends at school, as well. Honestly, I'm pretty lucky.

If I had to pick one thing in my life that makes me happiest, it would be the people I love. Without a doubt."

How do you feel about your relationship with your mother?

"My mom is great.

I always say that my mom and dad are polar opposites, but we all get along. It makes for a lot of good-natured teasing around the house.

Mom is a lot more laid back, while dad is a planner and a doer. He's always busy doing things, and Mom is always looking for the fun and good in life. They're a really fun pair."

I'm sensitive and empathetic. I really, really believe in treating everyone with lots and lots of respect, and I want my partner to understand that I'm not just the typical stoic elf. I care a lot."

I love how much Sophie cares about other people. Not only does she care about her friends, but she cares about the world, and the well-being of all living things. We've had some arguments over the years, sometimes about the smallest things... but I've never doubted that she loves me. I believe it with all my heart."

"A person's insecurities.

It's important to treat everyone with respect, and I think joking about someone's insecurities is one of the quickest ways to hurt someone."

If you were to die this evening with no opportunity to communicate with anyone, what would you most regret not having told someone? Why haven’t you told them yet?

"Sophie. I'd tell her how much I love her, that I appreciate everything she's done to support me and that I know she'll do incredible things. And I'd apologize to her for everything I've ever done wrong.

It's really hard to find the right words to tell someone how you feel. But even if those words come out wrong, that's okay. What's important is just letting someone know that you love them, and that you care."

Your house, containing everything you own, catches fire. After saving your loved ones and pets, you have time to safely make a final dash to save any one item. What would it be? Why?

"Sophie's locket.

It's this amazing necklace made out of two pieces that interlock together when they're next to each other. It was a present for her birthday, and I think the design is really cute. It reminds me of her when I can't be with her in person."

Of all the people in your family, whose death would you find most disturbing? Why?

"You know, I think my mom. She's the light that brings a smile to every family gathering, and she just makes life better with her energy. But my grandfather would be a close second, though. He taught me to be confident in myself, and he always shows me lots of love and support.

I think it would be tough living in a world without them."

"Sure, this is actually pretty easy.

I've been working on a final project for my telepathy class for the past few days. It's so exciting - a mind link so powerful that it'll create a storm when it's activated. But I'm so nervous to do it in front of my classmates. What if they think I'm a show-off? What if I mess up?

Sophie would probably tell me that it's okay to worry about things like this, but that I shouldn't let the fear stop me. That even if it goes wrong, I shouldn't be afraid to try."

AoS S4 (Agents of Hydra pod specifically) is hitting so right this time around 🥰

Not that it isn't normally something I love a lot, but I'm in a good spot right now to be over-analyzing folks' psychologies and interior motivations, and watching all these excellent performers perform excellent character writing is just blowing my mind.

And, like, I understand that the LMD/Framework storyline felt to some like a "a dream all along" kind of cop-out, but personally I can't get over the level of attention and care the writers put into asking the question, "at a certain level of complexity, is there a difference between a simulation and the real thing?" And all these characters go into this storyline with different starting points and interact with this question differently, and we get a nice big conversation on the topic with no spoon-fed answers.

Mace's story is amazing, and Framework Ward and Trip are actually so good.

Especially Framework!Ward being ACTUAL, ALGORITHMICALLY-CORRECT Ward, just with different inputs producing a different output, existing as a foil to the Doctor to show that all these Framework personalities belong to the real underlying person -- they're not AI-generated fictions, I mean -- and amount to alternate timeline versions of themselves.

So on the topic of the Doctor, what a fun (fun is NOT the right word) example of toxic masculinity as a concept that doesn't exist in a vacuum but rather is an external oppressive force exerted onto its victims by those already in power. Fitz is a deeply deeply emotional guy, by nature, and in this timeline his nurturing environment forbade displays of, AND I QUOTE, "womanly sentiments," i.e., processing his emotions in a healthy way, and he becomes cruel and vicious as a direct consequence.

Even the real, generally well-adjusted Fitz is shown to strike out in anger, he throws stuff off desks and punches rocks when he's angry, right? In the Framework, the Doctor doesn't have ANY alternate methods for channeling this huge uncomfortable emotion. It's either Bottle It Up (exhibit A: when he sees his dad's body) or Hurt Whoever Hurt You x1000 (see: all the state-sanctioned torture, personally hunting Simmons down, etc.)

(And, it's like, I think Dad!Fitz is characterized as being that stiff-upper-lip person by nature. His worldview is informed by what makes instinctive sense to HIM, and maybe he wouldn't be as much of a negative impact in the world around him if he also had the capacity to see that other people ... are different!!! His son is different. The narrative here is explicitly that the Doctor is what Leopold Fitz would have become if the universe allowed his father undue influence over Fitz's own worldview -- if his father used his parental authority to hold Fitz accountable for adopting and perpetuating his toxic, one-size-fits-all worldview.)

Which, I think -- I think -- is the problem. Thee capital P problem. People in authority trying to put people in black-and-white boxes, no matter what, even when that isn't going to work.

Daisy and Aida talked around this point, Aida the bad parent saying "I'm just giving them what they want" and Daisy the childhood trauma victim saying "sometimes what people want isn't right for them." (I know that Daisy saying this is also meant to be her reflecting on her post-S3 journey of self-distruction, and her getting to this point is a major milestone in her recovery but)

This conversation leads to the reveal of Aida's true goal -- self-determination. Her own "childhood" trauma has led her to this point. She was L I T E R A L L Y programmed to behave according to Radcliffe's personal worldview (side note: chief among his desires is to prolong and enhance life; you think Aida's NOT going to react badly when her own "life" is threatened???? She literally doesn't have another option than to preserve herself at all costs. She's mirror-verse Agnes, facing her own mortality not with Agnes' grace but with Radcliffe's ethically-unhinged stubbornness.)

Aida had a pad parent, who was blind to her needs (and/or deliberately chose not to meet them), and this is the result. #notallandroids
