My dad runs a website that he inherited from another guy and something went wrong this week and the site is redirecting to an AI porn chatbot site so I've been tapped as the only one in the family with any wordpress admin experience to fix this problem.
The site has a bunch of inactive admins who nonetheless still have admin privileges, is running on a version of PHP that hasn't had support in two years, and, most maddeningly, had about 35 plugins installed.
I'm fixing this and rooting out the malware redirecting the site, but I took a photo of the most bugfuck plugin that I knew Tumblr would appreciate:

Hello! I couldn't find where to message you and felt silly to email the question on your business email, so you're absolutely free to ignore this!
Love your comic so so much, your characters are wonderful! As someone who also wants to make a webcomic (traditionally, not like webtoon or tapas or any scrolly place), how did you get your website made up and hosted? I'm always stuck on the details of that stuff. Making the art isn't hard, it's the technical details that I'm too boomer to understand!
Apologies if it's such a weird or awkward question, but thank you for reading nonetheless!
Not a weird question at all, I feel like with large social media platforms being the main places where people post their work, the art of making your own website is truly lost in this day and age (I know I had to fumble a bit to make mine)
I use Bluehost to host my site, and used Wordpress's open source website builder for it. I highly recommend checking out Toocheke, which is pretty much what I used for the framework for my site. I am not a tech savy person (most of my css knowledge was editing my own tumblr back in the day), but toocheke was fairly easy to install and I was able to get most of my problems fixed by light researching.
I would highly advise against trying to make your website on wordpress itself, for some reason toocheke costed more to use since they put custom themes like that behind a paywall on their own built in builder if you decide to host with them.

do you have any posts already or if not would you be willing to share any information about what the process of getting the website up and running was like? i'm really interested in getting a site going for some other photo/record keeping projects and i know a decent amount about website design and basic html, but not that much about the process of actually getting it online;^;
Happy to share!
To be clear, my level of coding skill began with teaching myself html for neopets and ended with cobbling together vaguely custom css for my OG personal tumblr in 2011. So in terms of the physical backend of the website… it’s just Squarespace.
Getting it online is pretty simple if you’re not writing the code yourself, but there’s some stuff you’ve got to figure out first: what the name of your site will be, what url (domain) you want it to have, where to buy it, and where you want to host the site (like squarespace or Wordpress).
Once you’ve got the details sorted, you get an account on the hosting platform you want to use, and then set up the site and connect a domain. Squarespace lets you buy domains directly through their interface, but it tends to be more expensive than buying it directly from a registrar company like Namecheap or GoDaddy. If you’re comfortable teaching yourself to navigate basic internet stuff via Google, it isn’t too hard to learn how to tell a domain you bought elsewhere to point at your site. (Everything I’ve done to run all my websites has been self-taught via Google and Reddit, with the assistance of some very patient techie friends).
Once you’ve got the crunchy stuff set up, you build the site! I use Squarespace preferentially over Wordpress because a) I like the aesthetic of the templates and b) it’s what I know how to use. Wordpress is cheaper but trying to navigate the visual layout of the site annoyed me to the point it wasn’t fun anymore, so I personally will pay for ease of access on layout and design stuff.
To build the site, I thought through what I wanted the user experience to be, and how I wanted people to navigate, and I built with that in mind. For the photo repository, my goal was very clean visuals that really showcased the photos, and I wanted people to be able to navigate the taxonomy both visually and from a list. Honestly, just play with it, and try different things until you find a layout you like.
Then you try to break the site you’ve built. Because there will be errors and bugs and as much as I do appreciate it when y’all send me problems you encounter, I’d rather fix it first. I always check a new site on a desktop computer, tablet, and phone, and then ask a couple friends running different operating systems to do the same. That’s a good time to get feedback on things like layout and font size and readability, too.
The biggest time sink for the project has actually just been the photo management. I had to figure out how I needed things organized to build the site, and then taking the time to upload them all is the major rate-limiting factor.
You can launch the site so it’s “online” at any point during this process after you’ve paid for hosting and the domain and set it up, but I tend to wait until I’ve built the site and beta tested it sufficiently.
I’m happy to answer other questions, I’m just not sure what else would be helpful!

unfortunately ive seen this all coming. i skimmed through matt's wordpress way back when he first took the reigns of tumblr and i did NOT like what i found. he's always been one of those vapid tech-bros convinced that one money hack could fix all their problems forever, whether that be crypto, chatGPT, or NFTs. it doesn't surprise me one minor problem on a site he should've left operation of to his staff would blow up into a major PR disaster. although now that i think about it, his staff don't do a great job either, what with the bribes and all...

Commenting Problems Update
First, a picture of Charlie, looking very intently at our neighbor’s dog: Second, the problem with commenting looks like to be a miscommunication between my site’s code and PHP 8.1, which will mean absolutely nothing to most of you, but the good news is, WordPress’s folks are cooking up a fix. So hopefully it won’t be too much longer now before we’re back to full functionality. More news when it…

Hi Steph,
I am just wondering about your full fic rec list. When I click the link, it just brings me back to your home page. I cannot see your fic lists anymore.
Hey Nonny!
AHHHH Okay I know what the problem is as I have been asked about it before. Are you using the mobile app? Because on the app it just doesn't work. I have NO idea why. My theory is this, with what little I know about UI: I think the app can't read "sub-pages" (basically, it creates a folder on your blog that doesn't have a unique blog number code that the mobile app can read) that Desktop users are able to create on the "Customize" page of the Desktop Version (which functions essentially like a Wordpress blog), and because it's not reading it as a "real page" it gets forced into an endless link loop.
THE TUMBLR APP IS GARBAGE. It has been since implementation and they NEVER ever properly made the desktop and app versions work together.
It was only just LATE LAST YEAR that the desktop / browser version got all the style sheet stuff mobile's had for years AND the ability to edit mobile-made posts (before it used to lock you out and you had to go to the app to fix any posts even just reblogged on mobile, which is why I NEVER EVER blogged on the app). It's so bizarre that Tumblr hates their desktop/web browser users but it's the only version of the site that functions properly and is completely stable.
THAT ALL SAID, Nonny, the simple fix is to log into Tumblr on your Phone's web browser app, whether that's Safari, Firefox, Chrome, whatever... It functions just like the desktop version and all the links will work again for you.
OR you can copy-paste this web address into your web browser if you don't want to do that and the page will open as it should, since my blog isn't locked to only-Tumblr:
http://inevitably-johnlocked.tumblr.com/myficrecs
And to see the other pages just add a "2", "3", "4" or "5" at the end. I'm so sorry for the shit-show Nonny, but it IS there and the links all work on my end, and I just checked my web browser on my iPhone and it works in Safari <3
I should REALLY make a Rebloggable post since this is probably never going to be fixed on mobile (a rebloggable post will give it that unique ID number I mentioned and SHOULD fix the "fuck you mobile" issue, LOL). Let me know if y'all would like me to do that, and I'll put the pages as separate reblogs.
*HUGS*
#steph replies#tumblr things#tumblr problems#my blog#my fic recs#tumblr mobile is a piece of ABSOLUTE dumpster shit#i only use the mobile app if i want to scroll something on the bus#the desktop/browser version is FAR superior#case in point the customize page#you can do SO MUCH to your blog using the backend

Repairing a BBC Master #1 – plan of attack
Repairing an #Acorn #BBC Master, part 1 – plan of attack #retrocomputing #bbcmicro
So my poor Acorn BBC Master Turbo is sick … again. And I feel a little bit responsible. Quick recap: the Master developed a problem some years ago. This was ‘fixed’ when a very generous person donated a motherboard from his machine. I never did find the cause of the problem. Since then, however, the machine has spent a lot of its time stored in a cupboard because … reasons. The other day I…

If you don’t mind me asking, what controversy was there about icing on the cake?(I forgot if that’s the rainbott one)
Heads up, this post might be a bit of a rant so I might go all over the place with this post.
Basically, a fan made Muffins ask blog (ask-cake) made a post on their WordPress blog claiming that Icing On The Cake was disrespectful to Reitanna and "Muffins but kid friendly". I have a number of problems with their statement.
Firstly, it is not Muffins but kid friendly, I read the entire thing on Rainbott's website and it's still far from kid friendly.
And as for the "disrespect" to Reitanna because Muffins is a vent fic, Rainbott's rewrite was made to fix the many problems the original story had. Surprisingly enough, even if you write a vent fic people will still point out the flaws of the story. Especially if they didn't know it was a vent fic beforehand. It would be a whole other story if Rainbott wrote it purely to spite Rei but they didn't write it for that reason. In fact, Rainbott left out Reitanna's name because they didn't want people to harass her, which has happened before and could very likely happen again.
Also, I find it kinda rich that the blog owner claims that rewrites are disrespectful when Reitanna, the original creator of Muffins, has also done a lot of disrespectful if not out right disgusting things herself. (If you wanna know what she did specifically here's IssacBlooms' video response to Reitanna: https://youtu.be/jB5jZpTtO9c?si=V-m36I5j46enH50I ) Yes, what Reitanna went through as a child is terrible and no one should have to go through that, but it still doesn't give her a pass for all the shit she's done. It's almost like Ask-Cake holds Reitanna on a pedestal where she can do no wrong.
Yeah I have a lot of problems with Ask-Cake and their opinions on Rainbott's rewrite as a whole, and I have more that I won't post here because they're mainly about the story and how it doesn't make much sense.

no one reads these anymore right? Maybe i should post on wordpress…
I won’t be with Maria outside Pittsburgh tonite.
You know when you want to be mad at yourself even though it doesn’t matter and it becomes some sort of theater?
This week in scattered thought and action… not complete: I flew to Columbus Ohio and in the cab from the airport I left my airpod holder/charger and the portable brick charger attached. i got a new airpod holder charger but not a brick bc i have a backup.
I was flying to minneapolis the next day and misplaced my wallet to the tune of six witnesses and 90 minutes of scramble and me remembering witnesses to bad behavior, while technically, could be turned into an audience of my tragic death scene… they didn’t buy a ticket. So i was pretty good (tho not perfect… i was a little teary eyed and so mad at myself)… i thought i was rewarded for my patience by finding my wallet.
I go to Minneapolis and get to the airport early. So early I use up the charge on my other brick charger so plug it in. I missed the flight to Pittsburgh bc I left the charger and WENT BACK FOR IT. It’s not a fellow Marine… it’s a $100 charger. But I asked the people to call the gate and ran for it but the door was closed. So I missed the flight. And i had a small temper tantrum and cried and - it wasn’t the worst - like it wouldn’t go viral. But it was embarrassing and there was no way to get there on time for the show. So the agent has to find a new opener for Maria. My luggage is going to Pittsburgh. And I’m flying back to LA.
I am now trying to parse why I still want to hate myself for forgetting so many things this week. I want to still be mad at myself and have people be mad. Maria gave me extra money. I think - I HOPE it was the bump from last night’s show and not just sick pay:) but I’m not good at not accepting money. So I’ve taken it. I know Maria gets it. She has missed and forgotten things. But I’m just so mad and scared it’s the end of my brain working. But it’s also - A. OVER… just keep swimming Dory. And B. So many moving parts and not sleeping a lot. So chill kashian.
And I’m still in a skyclub. I’ve told the story to too many Delta reps and can’t face telling it to every friend and family member. To each person asking “so you couldn’t get another flight and make the show.” “There wasn’t another early flight?” I probably would have taken it. “The plane was there but they wouldn’t let you on?” I probably would have gotten on it. “So your luggage is on the flight to Pittsburgh? You checked it at Minneapolis?” That’s how checked luggage works.
“You knew the flight was boarding and Minneapolis gates are really far, why didn’t you just abandon the charger? The charger costs $100 - you would have got to hang with your friend, watch her work on her set, work on your new jokes and make more than $100?” And then I want to get defensive and explain tired and I already lost one… And I KNOW the questions aren’t there to make me feel worse - just people thinking out loud to get the problem and either fix it or offer ideas of how not to do it in the future. Hell, that last has not even been said to me… that’s the Parole Board Committee meeting that’s being held in my head right now. And you’ve just read the minutes. Sigh.
No sympathy is required, just venting and others might need to hear my brain and know they aren’t alone.

A Good Rule of Thumb: Too Clever is Dumb
Sooo, I am going through the site, post by post, to make sure everything is legible. Got about 100 left to go. But, here's the deal, my custom reusable blocks, which WordPress is so proud to offer... Aren't.
It's the updates. It's a year's worth of updates since I designed most of them, to WP and to the third party blocks that hafta keep up with it. Milo's cards don't really work anymore, nor do my existing accordions - although the the template still works on the latter if I stamp out a whole new block, the accordions weren't as complicated.
There wouldn't be as much of a problem if I could make a post and never, ever open it in the editor again, ha-ha, but that's not how I roll. So, while I am fixing colours and minor formatting errors, I am experiencing an occasional crashed block. I haven't killed any of Milo's cards yet, but the template doesn't work to make new ones, so it's inevitable.
First, I am correcting for legibility. But, eventually, I will have to go back around and redo the cards, and probably the Liner Notes, and other random stuff. I'll have to pick a new card format before I post the next instalment, because there's a card in it. I might end up going way more simple with no font or graphics at all - I'm having trouble with the theme fonts overriding the card fonts. Or else I'll hafta go back to images, which is less accessible and won't work with the dark mode. I know probably nobody's willing to put up with my work via a screen reader, but I'm trying not to be an asshole, just in case, ya know?
Well, tl;dr, I believed WordPress about a thing and made more work for myself. If grouped in a complex structure, Gutenberg's reusable blocks aren't reusable. Depending on complexity, you got about a year, then you gotta remake them all over again.
Beyond that: Since Discuz started dropping updates of untested compatibility, the SPOILER tags don't work anymore! There are spoiler-heavy comments now. I might be able to fix it, but in the meantime, NEW READERS (if any) BEWARE THE COMMENTS.

100 days of code - days 24-25
Hi! Long time no see!
Monday - Nov 13, 2023
My main goal for this day was to close a project I was procrastinating to do. And I finally did, maybe I'll write a post only about it (if I'm not too lazy) to review, since I stopped it in the middle to do other things. It is a project where I had to use docker and up a WordPress website, with nginx and a database. It was boring, I think I don't like devops that much. But the knowledge was worth it, I had to make a lot of scripts to configure the containers and the overall docker knowledge is useful.
In web dev I studied about CSS positioning (fixed, absolute, static, relative, sticky). And about custom properties that are like variables in CSS. So you can reuse some values in many places.
Tuesday - Nov 14, 2023
I read about browser compatibility, and what I can make to avoid problems.
Also learned a little about CSS frameworks that was something I always listen but not really know what it was. My understanding is that frameworks are basically libraries with some useful, ready code for you to use in your own projects. So you don't need to reinvent the wheel.
That's it.
Well, I was missing for, idk, 4 days; I was feeling a little down, and I wasn't really inspired to write here. Idk maybe I'm charging myself too much, for writing long posts, and It makes me procrastinate on writing. So, I'll stop charging myself this way, if I write a small post it's Ok if I write larger posts It's also Ok. I just want to have the commitment with myself for studying and writing every day and turn It into a solid habit.
