Just survived my first technical interviewâŚ
I didnât know it was going to be a technical interview. They didnât say it was and when I told my mom I was worried it might be, she was like, ânah, no way, theyâre just going to ask you about your experience.â It was a freaking technical interview.
They gave me two minutes to plan a five minute lesson on recursion and then had me âteachâ it. They also had me do the Fizzbuzz test (easy) and program a class (I forgot the syntax for the constructor because ⨠anxiety ⨠but I think I guessed correctly). This was justâŚsuper unexpected. The questions werenât difficult, but I hate getting out on the spot and it was terrifying.

#if u are unaware#fizzbuzz is a game we played in primary school#where you count up to 100#but every multiple of 3 you say fizz#and every multiple of 5 you say buzz#if a number is a multiple of 3 and 5 you say fizzbuzz#if someone messed up right near 100 they would be shunned forever

@stracciatellino:
I feel like people should be allowed to have complicated feelings about their jobs?? Like speaking for myself I love academia and right now I seriously miss it, but if I was doing research right now I'd definitely be bitching about how much data collection sucks ass. It's possible for people to be in a fulfilling career and still find aspects of their jobs annoying. (And also uh. Some people get stuck in unfulfilling jobs but can't quit because they need the money to survive. That's a thing too.)
This isn't about people who are already in the workforce finding their job annoying sometimes or doing unfulfilling work to get by, it's about college kids going into computer science because they think it's some get-rich-quick scheme, oversaturating the job market with "programmers" who can't write fizzbuzz during an interview without using ChatGPT, which lowers everyone else's salary and allows companies to outsource their jobs to people who will work for $5 an hour as a contractor because "no one in the US is qualified", and then if those college kids do get hired, they produce unstable software full of security vulnerabilities that results in mass theft of PII and contributes to the general malaise of enshittification

okay if there are jumps something goes screwy. At present I am literally just copying the .text section of a .o file out so there's probably some label stuff. I might be able to pre-process the jumps to convert them? I was able to get a fizzbuzz to run but only because an O3 fizzbuzz doesn't actually have any branches. -O0 fizzbuzz got stuck.

Days 47-50 of coding everyday for a year... It's been stressful
So I worked on with the image on top a game in Unity. I made a reverse murder mystery visual novel for Brackeys game jam. The bottom was me getting a feel for C++ still. Tbh I'm still kind of lost with it, but I'm trying. (it's just so different from C# in some ways). I'm also doing a small coding challenge every morning after I've had my coffee with C# since that's the language I'm going to base most of my career off of (I can do Java/Kotlin, and C++ but C# is special)
Here's a link to the game...

The next few days I'll be working on more C++, and my .Net Maui project. I also might be practicing some coding interview questions/tests since the summer is coming up soon (I did make an impressive fizzbuzz with a twist)

july internship 1, Java
after getting to know the language itself and giving myself an overall understanding of it, i started with my first task:
Let your program print out every number from 1-100. If the number is dividable by 3, the program has to print "Fizz" instead of the number. If it is dividable by 5, it has to print "Buzz". If both (dividable by 3 & 5) apply, it has to print "FizzBuzz".
(if i explain smth wrong or if you know easier ways to solve that task, please feel free to comment or text me! i'm more than open for help!)
Well that's how i did it:
first off i went and created an integer variable "num" with the value 100
i built a for loop starting from 0 on and told the program to keep going until it went up to 100 ("<=" means i want it to stop at exactly 100, "<" would end at 99)
inside of the for loop i put a few if statements in
the 1st if tests whether the current number is dividable by 3 and 5
here i put "if (i % 5 == 0 && i % 3 == 0)"... why?
-> "i" is the variable for the number that is "being tested" rn. We want to find out whether it is dividable by 5. For that we use "%".
This means, let's say i=2. How often does 2 fit into 5? 2 times. This results to 4 (2+2=4, another 2 won't fit into 5). now 5-4=1 soooo 2 % 5 == 1. 1 is the rest.
So , back to my code: to find out if "i" is dividable by 5, i%5 has to be equal to 0. If i%5 has any rest, it means that it is not dividable by 5. Same with 3 ofc.
The && here just means "and".
so.. long story short: IF "i" is dividable by 5 AND 3 print "FizzBuzz" (instead of "i") and go on to the next number. if it is not, go into the next if statement
the next "else if" statements say: if it is not dividable by 5 AND 3, is it dividable by 3/ 5 only? IF yes, print "Fizz"/ "Buzz" and keep going with the next number, else: go into else statement
the last else statement says: if you didnt apply to the first few if statements, just print "i"
.. well and that's about it:) programming this one was really fun and i enjoyed sound it so much ahhđЎđЎđ¤

The fucked thing about precomputing for stuff like FizzBuzz is that literally every programmatic solution is going to be slower than, like, a text file with the last run's results.
In a way a (for the sake of an example) Python program that computes FizzBuzz is just a... compiler (?) for that text file.
Under that lens, it isn't really any slower than a "real" solution in a systems or lower language. Slower to compile, sure, but the binary (text file) performs exactly the same -- instantly.
Something to think about, I guess.

Ode to FizzBuzz
FizzBuzz is a kind of old programming problem - one I was really familiar with and primed to excel at due to some unexpected basics of number theory cropping up in Dungeons and Dragons 3rd Edition.
Basically someone gives you a positive integer. Then you start counting, but if you hit a multiple of 3 you say "Fizz" instead of the number you were going to say, if you hit a multiple of 5 you say "Buzz" instead of that number, and if you hit a multiple of 15 you say "FizzBuzz" instead of whatever else.
In D&D 3rd Ed you had some levels that felt really blank and empty, because sometimes devs felt like giving out different sets of bonuses evenly - You'd get a Fighter feat every 2 levels and a regular feat every 3 levels so at level 5 Fighter would feel kinda bored and at level 6 Fighter would get two feats AND a second attack per round. AND all their saves would go up by 1 at 6 while none improved at 5. Bananas.
Anyway.
Most of handling FizzBuzz as a problem is just a matter of
Can you parse what's really being asked of you? and
Can you translate that using the vocabulary and grammar of the language you want to code in?
FizzBuzz, for instance, has a couple things to note:
You need to do something to account for 15s. If you just account for 3s and 5s, you'll end up with this kind of thing:
... 13 14 Fizz 16 ...
or maybe this, if you do back-to-back ifs instead of else-ifs (called "elifs" for short, in Python):
... 14 Fizz Buzz 16 ...
You probably want to include all three non-number outputs as explicit options - with 15 as the first option so it overrides others:
if n % 15 == 0: print("FizzBuzz") elif n % 3 == 0: print("Fizz") elif n % 5 == 0: print("Buzz") else: print(n)
If you try to make it part of the formatting of a single line, you still have to include a line of code that accounts for "what if %3 is also %15?" and you also have to code oddly so you won't run into issues with the if statements not progressing properly:
if n % 3 == 0: print("Fizz", end "") -> This makes it so "Fizz" won't automatically write a new line. if n % 3 != 5: print() -> It'll only write a new line IF it's not also "Buzz" if n % 5 == 0: print("Buzz") elif n % 3 != 0: -> This is the "weird workaround" bit, where you can't just say "else" because you had to use a second if statement to make it possible for both Fizz and Buzz to fire on the same number. print(n)
This also tests how well you understand the twisty ways code gets you thinking about stuff. Because there's a natural temptation to write it in the order the question asks about it: "Fizz," then "Buzz," then "FizzBuzz."
But if you write it "if n % 3" then "else if n % 5" then "else if n % 15," the 15 (the "FizzBuzz") part will never happen. "Else If" only happens if the first case doesn't happen, and "is divisible by 3" will always happen if "is divisible by 15" can happen. It's a reminder to put your rarer and more permissive if-statements earlier if you want everything to occur in its own time.
But wow, though. I'd really forgotten how bare-bones level 5 used to be on 3rd Ed Fighter.

Because most students dont take shop. Its a niche skill, its not something you *need* to learn (fine if you disagree, this is just the educational social cosnensus). Tech-support-level tech literacy is the same. Schools still teach that! Tons and tons and tons have programming classes and summer projects and all that jazz. But its not core and most never take them.
Meanwhile using a computer *is* core. You need it for virtually every single class you take and most every job you are gonna get. So schools need computers that everyone can use, not just the fizzbuzzers. And from that lens, from the 'i just want them to be able to use wikipedia for history papers' lens, the less those comps can be borked by fat fingers the better.
I think this is most evident by the fact that very few kids in the US today dont have a computer at home, schools are not where they learn comp skills. At minimum they have a smartphone. And they have obeyed similar design principles more or less. People dont want to bother with understanding tech and anyone who permits them to skip that will win.
We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.
Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.
Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
