What Writing Contest is Best for You?
Writing contests might seem a little daunting. Maybe you don’t have the money or skill to enter one just yet. If you’ve got mixed feelings about writing contests, let me give you some pointers!
Let’s talk about what type of contest you should enter! There are lots of different ones that cater to almost every writer, so you need to know what your style, genre, and skill level is before looking for a contest.
University/Publication Contests - These contests will have a variety of styles, like flash fiction, short stories, non-fiction, poems, essays, etc. They usually have amazing prizes, like cash or even a publication deal, but might cost a little more to enter. Your writing must be free of any spelling mistakes with proper punctuation, correct dialogue tags, good plot/character development, and overall be of mature writing level. Basically, you shouldn’t enter one of these if you’re a new writer, but to experienced writers, I encourage you to enter! You could get a lot of online publicity if you win.
Writing Contest Websites - These are going to range a lot but typically websites like Wattpad, Joara, Writer’s Digest and more will cater toward intermediate writers. They also cover a variety of genres and styles, but you’ll see a lot of prompt related contests. They don’t usually have an entry fee, which is a plus! However, that means the prizes won’t be the same. You probably won’t find a publication deal, but maybe some amazon gift cards or recognition on their social medias and sites, which is still super for up-and-coming authors! As for writing requirements, you don’t need to be absolutely perfect because these judges aren’t typically going to look at the entries from a publisher point of view. Obviously, avoid spelling and grammar mistakes to the best of your ability, but you don’t have to worry about more complex things like perfect plot and character development. Also, double check a website to make sure it’s not a fraud! The last thing you want is your money or story stolen. I would definitely check the terms of service on a website you haven’t heard of before, and see what previous contestants have to say.
“New Writer” Contests - These are perfect if you’re a new writer that wants to get some recognition! Be warned, though: Lots of writers will enter these types of contests. I suggest going for less popular genres if you want a better chance of winning, like poetry or essay writing. At the end of the day, it’s up to you! There will typically be no prize, as so many new authors enter and have very little experience. Do not expect straight cash prizes or publication deals. You’ll probably get a shout-out, though, which is exactly what a new writer needs to get going! As for writing skill, the judges won’t be very harsh, and will often provide feedback which is perfect for new writers! Please don’t enter these if you are an experienced/intermediate writer. These are for authors who are just starting out, and it’s not fair if you already know what you’re doing.
So, after reading all that, I hope that you’ll try out a writing contest! I suggest getting your submissions ready now, because the start of 2021 will be when contests open again. You want as much time as you need to enter, and don’t worry if you miss the deadline! It just gives you more time to perfect your story. Best of luck, and happy writing!

Flash Fiction Contest: Nederlandse finalist
