An eon ago @floggingink tagged me in a music shuffle meme! I'm not a huge playlist person, but here's a selection of tabs I had open, stuff I heard on the radio in the part few days, etc etc. (Is the radio the analog version of shuffle? You tell me.)

The Who, "Baba O'Riley" — The episode of Joe Pera Talks to You where Joe Pera discovers Baba O'Riley (sample here) is such a pure and joyful watch, and also IMO one of the best on-screen depictions I have ever seen of how the first ecstatic stage of a new hyperfixation feels: this, more, again, again! Let me share this thing with you, strangers and friends, so that you might also feel transcendent joy!

The Lone Bellow, "Honey" — Love the mellow energy on this one. For some reason I feel like if this had been on the radio in 2017/2018, it would have shown up in a bunch of top-shelf Bughead fics. Maybe it's the "Put the pedal to the floor/Let the darkness come" lyric?(@anniemurphys, thoughts?)

R.E.M., "Strange Currencies" — This Esquire article described the soundtrack for The Bear as "widely praised by forty-something-year-old Midwestern dads," and like, uhhhh: guilty as charged.

boygenius, "Not Strong Enough" — "Always an angel, never a god": what a mood, what a mood. Also, it reminded me that I really want to make a mixtape of song pairs with opposite titles. Obviously the match for this one is Sheryl Crow's "Strong Enough."

Twisted Sister, "We're Not Going to Take It" — I have always wondered about the lyric "Your life is trite and jaded/Boring and confiscated." My theory is that it was supposed to be "constipated," but that that was actually too much rebellion for the label.

Skeeter Davis, "The End of the World" — Whenever I hear this song, it's playing over the credits of Mad Men in November 1963. But the other day I heard it on my local oldies radio station, followed directly by Len's unparalleled 1999 one-hit wonder "Steal My Sunshine," and gentle readers, I about had a stroke.

Dove Cameron, "Boyfriend" — I've never encountered this song anywhere outside of the Internet, but anytime I hear it, I walk around with it stuck in my head for the next 3 days. It's basically the same lick over and over again, but when it's this sticky, you don't honestly need more than that.

Jimmy Buffett, "Come Monday" — Awww, Jimmy. Legitimately sad about his passing.

Duncan Sheik, "Barely Breathing" — Truly, the '90s will always be with us. Or at least with me.

Joni Mitchell (with Brandi Carlile and others, 2022), "Both Sides Now" — Do you need to have a good cry? Well, you do now. Consider this an open tag for anyone who wants to play - I'd love to hear what you've been listening to!

So...I haven't had to do this in YEARS (was hoping I'd never HAVE to, again, either...), but...here I am, BEGGING.

I know basically EVERYONE is struggling financially, these days. The world is a complicated, shitty place, and we're all in some kind of trouble. However, I am in VERY DESPERATE trouble. Or rather, my family is.

My mother (76), has been severely ill for months. The last few weeks it has gotten very, VERY bad. She can't eat at ALL. Some days she can barely take a drink of water, without getting sick. We live in South-Africa, and we are dependent on social grants - social welfare, basically. As such, we are also dependant on public health care.

Now, to try and describe the state of said public health care...well, let me just say, there aren't enough trigger warnings in the GALAXY, for that. To compare it to mid evil torture, would be being kind. And I'm saying this as someone who has LIVED it, witnessed it, several times. Most people choose to rather just go without medical help, and die at home, rather than go to any of these "facilities."

BUT... I'm not ready to let my mom die at home. I'm not ready to let her go. So, we bit the bullet, and went to a private hospital. The thing is, we have no idea how long we can stay here, because I am draining what very little savings I have as we speak, just having gotten her here in the first place. And we aren't even close to any kind of diagnosis or anything, yet. We might not be able to afford any actual testing she needs to get done.

So...here I am, BEGGING. Guys, every cent counts. ANY dollar that ANYONE has to spare, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, help us out. Again, I don't even care if it's one dollar from a few people. Literally ANYTHING would help, right now.

And if you can't donate, PLEASE SHARE THIS POST!!!!! I'm going to tag just about everyone on my friend's list, and I ask all of you, AGAIN, even if you can't give anything, just PLEASE help me spread the word, somehow.

"the visitors" by abba ... they played this between sets when i saw blur in july; i was desperately trying to shazam it the entire time and it finally worked at the very end thank god, have been listening on repeat since then

"on a ragga tip" by sl2 ... also shazammed in london when beta and i found ourselves at a family-friendly outdoor sunset rave on hampstead heath

"low flying jets" by heatmiser ... have truly been listening to this record all summer; every song is of course good but this one is my favorite

"i promise" by radiohead ... heard on KEXP and has reawakened my lifelong radiohead standom

"to hell with good intentions" by mclusky ... i had a dream like six weeks ago that jimin from BTS died and it was revealed that he had secretly been a former member of mclusky... so i figured i had better start listening to mclusky...

"i hate milk" by air miami ... this album was just reissued and is really wonderful

"emperor's new clothes" by sinead o'connor ... she just had so many great songs but this one is really special, it's so personal, and her conviction is so inspiring

"detroit swing 66" by gomez ... i've been listening to this album a lot this year... it's really good and i think quite underrated

"dying in may" by the clientele ... also heard on KEXP; from their new album

"parasite" by nick drake ... i have honestly mostly been listening to pink moon on repeat all summer and this is my favorite song on it!

This is from ch2, so it's a VERY brief recap of ch1 from Eddie's POV:

Edmodeus has been struggling in the ranks of Hell for centuries now, and he isn’t sure he’s ever going to get promoted to Corruption and Temptation, but finally, at last, he’s called to appear before the court and presented with his first official corruption assignment: a novice nun about to take her final vows. Eighteen, renamed Sister Mary Elizabeth, but christened Christine Elizabeth Cunningham. Called Chrissy until taking up her holy name. He studies her file over breakfast. The other demons all complain about nuns: how difficult they are to corrupt, how prudish they are, how cold. But this girl…there’s a picture attached, and he drinks in her fiery hair and big gray eyes. What a waste to shove such a beauty into a convent! That night he assumes human form and it takes hardly any urging before she’s inviting him inside. Chrissy (Sister Mary Elizabeth) in the flesh is even more lovely than her picture, and it’s almost embarrassingly easy to make her blush. She asks him if he’s an angel, and why the fuck didn’t he think of that?! It’s the perfect cover!

Yeah this one's me finally succeeding in writing a hellcheer darkfic and it's filthy. :D

14,874. I only started writing in September though.

3. how many fics did you publish in 2022? how many multi chapters vs one shots?

four – two one-shots and two two-shots. i'd like to give multi-chap a go but i don't think i have the patience?? i prefer to write little self-contained snippet-y things.

4. what was your longest fic? your shortest fic?

longest complete is netflix and thrill, but two nights will be longer once i finish part two. shortest is look me in the eye (tell me i'm the one).

5. what was your most popular fic? what was your least popular fic?

by number of hits is netflix and thrill, most popular by kudos and bookmarks is baby i'm yours now (dreaming a connection). least popular is two nights.

6. what fic didn't perform as well as you thought it would?

i didn't think any of them would perform well, so they all exceeded my expectations.

7. what fic performed way better than you thought it would?

all of them! look me in the eye (tell me i'm the one) has had really good feedback - much better than i thought it would. i love it when commenters tell me their favourite lines, and everyone seemed to have a different one for that fic. baby i'm yours now (dreaming a connection) also got a lot of bookmarks and i was so flattered by that.

8. what was your favourite fic you wrote from 2022?

the first one: baby i'm yours now (dreaming a connection). i wrote it really quickly for @majicmarker – it's a different style than i usually do and i just really felt connected to eddie's POV.

9. what was your favorite fic that somebody else wrote in 2022?
