The Big Black Clover Fanfic Recommendation Post

I've been talking about making that post since forever and I think I've finally finished compiling them!

So. Grab a notepad. Take out your TBR list. Get ready to bookmark or mark for later. And let's go.

I guess I should start with a few disclaimers 🫡

I haven't read every fic out there and there are notably a few fics I know I'm going to love but haven't started yet. I think I'll update the post regularly.

The fics on this post are fics I enjoyed and remember having read. considering how many things I forget on a daily basis, it means a lot.

I have my favorite characters, tropes, and themes and this will definitely show.

I'm attempting to organize the fics in categories but ofc some shippy fics also have feels or are angsty or are fluffy, same for the AUs... An attempt is made to organize them based on the vibes I remember (I’ve read some of those literal years ago).

If you're in this post and you think I've put your fic in the wrong category: don't hesitate to reach out!

For the shippy fics, I have my favorite ships but I'm a multishipper sooooo there's that.

I love legend of zelda I love boat boys this is like the ultimate combination of my interests you cannot understand the brainrot. Idk what to call it yet tho... majoras minecraft? Anyway prepare for an essay

OKAY so we have the Hero of Time, Etho, who stopped ganons plans before they started, and would be stuck in a child's body if not for the fact I think that'd be a lil weird for the more shippy aspects of this au that all the running through time aged his soul and his body followed suit (he's still got a young appearance, and the mask doesn't make him look older like he thinks). Same reason he has the scar over his eye (from the ganon fight); no matter how much the body may heal or rewind the mind will not forget.

Then navi (maybe bdubs?) left him, and he went with epona (maybe bdubs instead? (eponas a horse iydk)) and he sets out on a journey aka the beginning of mm:

Wandering through the woods on epona, gets jumped by skull kid. For those unaware, there is skull kid, a lonely lil sweetheart, and he wears the mask, an entity on its own. He also has two fairies, siblings tael and tatl.

So I was a little unsure about this for a while, but I think I've decided on grian for the skull kid and Jimmy for tael, grian bc watchers and Jimmy bc skull kid is not very nice to tael (bc of the mask) and like a listeners reference or smth blah blah blah

TATL. that's who's interesting. At the beginning she gets separated from her friends and becomes your companion. So naturally for this au she is our favourite joel smallishbeans. It works so well. Tatl is mean but cares, and that's joels dynamic with the bad boys and with etho, guys it's literally perfect idc what you say

I think it doesn't change much throughout like the story of the game, but just taking dialogue tatl says to link and its so perfect for a sassy joel to a "can't believe I'm dealing with this shit again" etho. Uh one thing different though; in hylian form etho doesn't have an ocarina but instead a mini marimba. Just because. I think it's cool, and for potential things later on.

Now, fairies in this au are just tiny glowing people shaped things with wings. The glow around them is their magic, and depending on emotions/energy the brightness changes (thats why they look like flying balls of light). Some fairies have the ability to make projections of themselves, more hylian sized in nature. This can be intimidation or distraction or w/e, but they cant do it for long periods of time bc its exhausting. These forms aren't physical. Just sized up light projections of their actual bodies.

So for a lot of their journey, joel is just a cute pocket sized ball of rage and sarcasm, who helps with ethos aim for fighting. Bc that's a game mechanic and also ethos like half blind. But like when joel calms down imagine him crawling into ethos hat and just dozing off. He can fit in the palm of your hand like guys it's so cute. But he is also capable of being worse than a mozzie

Oh probably a good point to put in what I imagine etho looks like. So it's typical link green (maybe a bit dampened?), weird pointy hat, short hair (white ofc), his shirt is more of a jacket with a fluffy cold weather collar, it's a bit too big for him but he knows he'll grow into it, he's all knobbly and thin (underfed a lil, boy was never taught how to care for himself beyond basic survival). His injured eye is red bc of ganon, and often gives him phantom pains. It can't be healed.

Anyway, at some point in their journey together, etho and joel learn a song that let's fairies have a larger physical form, no wings, sorta like the great fairies (who they learnt it from prolly). It isn't permanent, slowly draining ethos magic meter, the spell ends when you run out of magic. This is because I want them to actually be able to stand side by side or maybe hug, and also bc its hard to block a blow with your body when ur tennis ball sized.

Aaaaand, this ties back in with with marimba. What if ethos injured, or unconscious, and he obviously can't defend himself, so joel panics and plays the marimba in what he hopes is the right order to give himself a body. I imagine that being that small, you could not play an ocarina. And hey maybe joel carries etho away after that, and when the spell ends he has barely any light emitting from himself because he spent nearly all his magic (what he is made of) saving etho.

But this song isn't used much, because of its draining nature, and you can't really do any other magic things while it's going. So it's mostly just in the final fight (over and over) or tough moments or maybe joel wants to experience something like hoe hylians do. It's obviously inferior to how he experiences things as a fairy, of course, he's just curious thats all. He totally doesn't want etho to do it more.

hello i'm néide and this is my blog, which mostly consists of me being grumpy about niche things. i have multiple degrees in medieval irish literature and while sometimes i use these to be vaguely educational, more often i use them to write incredibly specific fic about characters nobody else cares about, and this fic can be found on ao3 (for logged-in users)

so this is a guide to my incredibly specific fanfiction, which i feel also gives a reasonably good introduction to the kind of thing i'm likely to be yelling about on this blog

i am reliably informed that you don't actually need to know anything about the source material to have fun with these fics (or suffer from the angst), but also they can be more fun if you do. some have bibliographies/refs/explanations so i also know a few people have used them as a way to get started with medieval Irish lit which will never not be extremely funny to me

current WIP: chasing someone else's dream (16k, WIP): a cú chulainn/láeg reincarnation fic. they have been reincarnated, not for the first time. they've also been cursed, and thus, unlike in every life before this one, they've never met. ngl this fic contains some of the best prose i ever wrote, please read it

Maybe then the image of Merlin's golden eyes will stop haunting him. AKA an in-depth character study of Arthur. I do not endorse Arthur's actions, but this is what I think he'd do in canon. This was my season 3 prediction!

Summary: 'You will forget all that you hold dear,' the sorcerer had vowed before he attacked Arthur, leaving his patrol dead and Arthur achingly thankful that for once, Merlin hadn’t been with him. Well, and he is quite certain that he hasn’t forgotten anything. As it turns out, everyone else has; specifically about him, and that Camelot is supposed to have a crown prince. When Merlin stumbles across him by chance, Arthur should be relieved. And he would be, really—if he hadn’t just been stabbed, and found out that Merlin has magic while he was at it. It all gets a lot more complicated from there on out as Arthur tries to keep his own secrets, deal with the revelations about Merlin, and find a way not only to restore Camelot's memories, but protect it against the threats gathering on the horizon, too. I could probably make this more streamlined, but for now I just wanna get everything out of the way. I love writing about Husk from Hazbin Hotel, and I can write (almost) whatever sort of Huskpost you want to see from me, from sweet and fluffy to outright nasty! You can check my "irk huskposts"/"hazbin hotel husk x reader" tags to get a feel for what I do here.

I pretty much exclusively write for Husk. Of course I can include other characters as side characters, I love this whole cast, but Husk is the one my brain wants carnally right now.

Prompts don't need to be shippy! I don't mind doing angst, slice-of-life, headcanons; just give me an excuse to yell about Husk.

That said, I don't want to write any canon/canon ships with Husk for now, not even Huskerdust. I don't hate Huskerdust! I'm just a huge baby when it comes to shipping my F/Os with other canon characters when my obsession is new. Give me a year or two, and maybe some more canon. But until then, my relationship with Huskerdust will be nothing more than passive appreciation.

When it comes to Reader inserts, I'll do any gender and body type! I tend to default to GN!Reader and AFAB due to personal experience, but I'll write any identity, including trans readers. Everyone is welcome here! Husk is pansexual and gender-blind, of course he doesn't judge! I do concede that I don't possess a dick and any attempts at writing a reader with one might be inaccurate, but I'll do my best.

I'm fairly open to kinks and have no moral judgment toward anything in fiction. There may be a very small amount of kinks I won't write, and I do reserve the right to reject anything I don't feel comfortable writing, but do know that any rejections don't come with moral judgment. Let's get uhh...constructicons/Prowl (for the ask thingy)

Don't ship it.

Why don’t you ship it?

The biggest reason is that nothing about the situation was healthy for Prowl. Not only did he become part of Devastator in the most traumatic way possible, but the time afterward was physically and psychologically harmful for him as well. Outside of that, there just isn't much for me to ship there? Prowl sees the Constructicons as a weapon and the Constructicons are just fanboys (up until the narrative decides Prowl needs to be utterly alone and they drop him like a hot potato). The whole situation was incredibly wasted potential.

2. What would have made you like it?

A different writer.

On its own, Prowl being forced into Devastator isn't a deal breaker for me because the Constructicons weren't the ones responsible. They did decide afterwards that they liked Prowl and wanted to hang with him, but until then, he was never even meant to be part of the team; just a disposable test subject for integrating someone new with an existing combiner. And I do honestly get the appeal of, "You were disposable to them, but not to us". Goodness knows Prowl needs someone in his corner. Heck, I can even get behind the angst of "this situation is physically hurting Prowl, but none of them - including him - want to stop".

So the setup was great. Super unhealthy, but you can do some pretty interesting things with unhealthy. But as they say, the devil's in the details.

See, I like the Constructicons. I do not like the way John Barber writes them as an interchangeable amalgam instead of letting them have some individuality. And I really don't like how he tried to resolve that conflict with earlier portrayals by saying that combining "rots away the individual". I like the idea that the Gestalt mind affects its components, not the idea that it supercedes them. I also don't like Prowl's recent instability being ascribed to the combining process and not, y'know. The traumatic events surrounding it. But we get this explanation from Galvatron, who delivers it alongside lies about Prowl killing Spike's father, so I can ignore it. I can pretend it's just another lie.

What I can't ignore is that Arcee doesn't hear this and think, oh, maybe it's not Prowl's fault he's been so erratic lately. Maybe I should see if he's okay when I get a chance. Nope. She just turns on him completely. Because the post-Dark Cybertron arc is the "let's tear away what little support Prowl still has" arc.

So I don't like how the Constructicons were written, I don't like the in-universe explanation for how they were written, and I hate the way everyone saw Prowl falling apart (including people who dared to call him a friend, Optimus), and just went, eh, I don't really care. He's just bad. And then, just to make sure Prowl loses everyone, the Constructicons turn on him too. Because apparently they can spend time in his head and like what they see, but it's still somehow a surprise that the mech who tolerated them because they were useful might not actually want them the way they want him.

Get these mechs a different writer.

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

As I mentioned above, the setup is great. It had a lot of potential, not just in terms of the relationship, but for character development, worldbuilding, and even the introduction of something like chronic illness with Prowl's physical health being affected by combining (again, he was introduced to the team as an experiment in adding bots to a combiner. It would make perfect sense if it wasn't an entirely successful experiment).

I also like a lot of the art and fics I've seen for them, even if most people seem to ignore the inherent angst in favor of sweet, funny, and fluffy pieces. I just wish more people dived into the physical and psychological impacts, whether in a shippy way or not.

A (Noncomprehensive) Guide to Zine Apps; or: How To Show You're Going To Be Good At The Specific Thing You're Applying For

There's been a lot of zines opening apps recently, and with that comes a lot of acceptances/rejections and questions on what applicants could do differently to finally get to be part of a project they're enthusiastic about. While I'm not some kind of all-knowing zine expert, I have been in a good handful so far, and so thought I could share some tips.

Read the Info Doc or Carrd for zine requirements and theming. Seems obvious, but this is always a good first step when you're thinking about applying for something. Think about how the zine's theme fits in with pieces you've already made--you'll have a harder time getting into a zine that's themed for something you've never written/made art for before than you will with a zine that fits with your typical works. These informational resources are also where you'll find the specs that you'll be expected to work to for the zine, which can then inform what example pieces you choose.

Choose your example pieces based on the zine's theming. What is the zine trying to accomplish? Which characters are going to be showcased? If you're applying to a zine all about platonic love, maybe don't have all three examples you provide be heavily shippy. If you're applying to a zine about women, make sure you've got some examples of writing/art that showcase you writing women! Personally, I never use the same combo of writing samples twice--I've got a pool of fics I pull from that are roughly in zine-wordcount-territory and I select them based on what the zine I'm applying to is about.

Make sure your examples show off the style you would be expected to create for the zine. This is where having read the info doc comes in! If you're applying as an artist, typically zines will expect art contributors to create pieces with full backgrounds. Make sure you've got at least one example in there of a piece that matches that description! For writers, usually the request will be to tell a complete story in anywhere from 1500-3000 words (depending on the zine), so keep a stash of oneshots within that word count ready to go to use as your writing samples. There's some other considerations, too--is this a fluffy, shippy zine? Maybe don't use your angstiest work in the application. Is this a serious, somber-toned zine? Think twice about including the comedy crackfic you're proud of as an example. Remember, the mods are looking for people to help bring their specific zine vision to life--you'll make their lives (and your own!) easier if you give them examples that already go along with that vision.

A coda to the last point: what if you don't have anything for that fandom written? While that's definitely a more difficult situation, there's ways around it: mainly, making extra sure your submissions hit on the tone of the zine. Are you applying for a ship zine but haven't ever written that ship before? Maybe use some pieces that feature the characters involved individually. Do you fully not have any works including the characters from the zine's fandom? Think about the kind of writing/art the zine wants you to create, and send in your best submissions having to do with those: for shippy zines, show that you can write/draw romantic scenes! For gen zines, choose your best character introspection moments, or anything that shows off the genre (lighthearted? comedy? angst?) best.

Don't rush things. Remember, apps are usually open for a while! If it's the beginning of the application period and you're not sure you've got any good examples to apply with, maybe send out a call for writing/drawing prompts and aim for that zine wordcount/art specs goal! Taking the extra time to make sure your examples are relevant will let you put in a much more curated application

At the end of the day, it's all just for fun. I know this sounds a bit like a PSA, but ultimately there are many reasons why people are rejected from zines, and they're not because of some personal failing--usually it'll be a case of many applicants and few spaces to fill. Don't be discouraged--there's always more projects coming along, and you can always find or found some other, non-application-based fandom events in the meantime!

Anyway--hope this was useful in some way to someone out there! I know zine rejections can be frustrating and a bit demoralizing, and I can assure you that I've definitely been right there with you. I definitely encourage trying to flesh out your portfolio of zine-styled pieces even when you're not actively writing or drawing for a zine--it'll give you more variety to pull from for apps in the future.

He tugged – pointedly, purposefully – on his collar, the badges from each time he’d thrown in his lot with fate flashing in the lamplight. “I would be more than happy to make use of it. In, fact, I already had plans. So, please, by all means, let us know yours soon.”

The man in question – a Baron or something, Link honestly didn’t know or care – bowed a second time and turned away, his heels clicking on the tiled floor as he retreated to anywhere at the banquet that wasn’t at Link’s side.

Good riddance. He smoothed his collar down again, checking each pin was still straight after their argument. He had a bad habit of fidgeting if he wasn’t careful, especially when he wound up in an argment, and exhaled.

There was a soft noise nearby, under the chatter that surrounded him, and Zelda rolled up beside him and turned her chair neatly on the spot to wave someone else over as she spoke aloud.

“Was he really trying to argue with you again?”

“It’s the same thing,” Link groaned. “He’s been there to check the fences, you see. He’s very sure they’re repaired. He’s so very sorry about the scares to the train drivers and the inconvenience... You’d think the man liked losing his cattle with how he goes on.”

“What are your plans for that land?”

“It’s not that far out of Papuchia.” Link picked up a glass of wine from the table nearby and used it to gesture with, his wide sleeves nearly grazing Zelda’s hair before he remembered to be careful.

Fuck, how many glasses had he had yet tonight? He’d been ambushed by a dozen people in a row, all eager to know where he’d been and what had taken the Chief Royal Engineer from his duty for so long yet again. He’d been given glasses as greetings and picked them up to occupy himself over and over...

“There’s a lot of good land there to build, like another shelter on for, uh,” he continued, or tried to. The person Zelda had waved over had finally arrived, and Link lost his train of thought rapidly.

Hateno was there. Hateno, wearing a formal outfit Link had never seen him in before: red and blue with gold trim and a hat not too unlike his own red one perched on his hair, which he’d let down tonight for some reason. His tunic was red, pants black and mostly covered by tall, pristine white boots and a blue surcoat. His left hand was in a white glove to match, and his right had the green stone that marked he was still wearing the wrapping for under his prosthetic, just not the arm itself: powers without the weight or stress.

Link swallowed hard again, and Hateno grinned.

“Shelter for people and emergencies, I assume?” he said, his light voice sending a shiver down Link’s neck and heat right to his face.

“Er. Yeah,” Link swallowed and started to take another drink before Hateno reached up and stole his wine glass. He took a long drink himself, then leaned down the (more than one inch today; his boots must have heels) to kiss him pointedly on the forehead.

Zelda, next to them, squealed. “I’ll leave you two alone then,” she said, and Link kicked the nearest wheel of her chair as she left.

“You’re drunk,” Hateno observed the moment she was gone. “Never thought I’d see that.”

“I hate these kinds of things,” Link grumbled, but he looked up relieved: he was pretty sure Hateno hated them, too.

“Can you escape yet?”

Link looked around to see if anyone else seemed like they were waiting on him to have a free moment, but truthfully it seemed he’d gotten through most. He slid one arm around Hateno’s waist himself and took a second, longer check: who else in their group was still down here? Did anyone look bothered?

But his Zelda had gone to Captain’s side, and Smith was dancing with Ravio and there was no sign of Kokiri at all, and that was all he really worried about right now. He leaned his head on Hateno’s shoulder instead.

1; Be specific and unique

For example, the prompt "Sole dies". All characters would be sad, or angry. But the prompt, "Companions travel through a haunted forest and lose each other" has a lot of ways it can go. Vague prompts can be difficult for me to write, as there's often not much to write. Or if there is, it ends up feeling samey, or too short. There's only so much I can write about Sole dying.

Some prompts are answered in canon, and don't need to be answered. For example, Companions react to Sole speaking like the Silver Shroud. You can easily go on a wiki or find a compilation video on YouTube.

Also, I prefer to write about the companions, not Sole. So, requests about the Sole Survivor are likely to sit in the inbox for a while.

2; Be mindful of dark subject matter

Guys. You know miscarriage is a real thing, right? A horrible, traumatic thing that fucks up entire families? And same with rape, or abuse, or anything like that. Use your best judgement asking about heavier topics. These things aren't scenarios to generate angst. They're traumatic events. That real people go through.

I'll never forget following a react blog who was asked to write about miscarriage, only for them to apologize and refuse, as they had suffered multiple miscarriages themselves.

Rule 3; No fetishes or second-hand embarrassment prompts

So, I said be specific and weird...not with your own fetishs, please.

For non fetish stuff, I really do not care for toilet humor. Or anything meant to evoke second-hand embarrassment. This is another 'use best judgement'. I'm very easily grossed out by body fluids/excrement and there's no prompt that I'm willing to do with it.

my gjhm hcs/prompts/scenario/drabbles 5️⃣🎶💘

more personal hcs i have! also in continuation/addition to my utahime hcs post 👍 this is just a mix of gjhm, utahime and some sprinkle of utashoko, sugushoko hcs if you stare hard enough..

i stand by the idea that these two started out as hot and cold frenemies during their time as students. so not exactly fluffy/shippy material here but i digress, it's fun to speculate what gjhm were like as annoying students getting on everyone's nerves.. i think those two would have been adorable, funny, and annoying 😂

also, i wrote this in mind that gojo is the one that fell first and fell hard for utahime. so almost everything here is just a perspective of someone crushing on their senpai LMAO. in my head, utahime doesn't start noticing gojo until they're both in their twenties. i feel those two would be a slow burn like a very angsty slow burn 🫠🫠🫠

note: i had to research more of the tokyo tech school, calculate the years, ages to try and be accurate as possible to the canon timeline. this long list starts at around 2005/2006 pre-HI arc. if gege doesn't state something explicitly, i feel it's free real estate to interpret and develop headcanons 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

young gojo and utahime formally met around late spring to early summer of 2005 and immediately had a rocky start. they met through shoko one afternoon after class. however, gojo has already known about utahime prior to this. while not paying attention to yaga's lecture. he noticed the senior singing to herself as she tended the campus community garden with the other upperclassmens/sorcerers. her soothing voice is what he notices first

gojo was awe struck by utahime at first glance and it's been bad for him since then. his senior who is 2-almost 3 years older, short, calm and too easy of a target to pick on is very much adorable when angy

bc of the nature of shoko and utahime's CT, they're often at the main campus ground together. they'll hang out in the infirmary or chilling somewhere nearby. post missions, the boys tend to visit the infirmary just to annoy them and get treatments/checkups even if they don't have a visible scratch

the gang made it a tradition to have dinner every sunday, every week as possible. it started with utashoko going to a potluck/bbq restaurant frequently until the boys learned about it and crashed it >_>. since then, they have dinner at campus where they all cook together. everyone has to pitch in. utahime likes to incorporate in-season crops to the cooking. gojo doesn't usually eat veggies but somehow can have seconds of songstress's hotpot

when on missions, utahime keeps a journal and a camera to document memories. gojo makes fun of her for it, but ends up enjoying it and helping her with the camera work, finding spots to take pics. he sometimes helps take pics too bc of his tall stature

the tokyo tech high campus is LOUD when gjhm are bickering. and they're always bickering! it doesn't matter who started it (it's gojo always), so those two end up getting scolded by yaga often

on days when utahime is paired with another sorcerer for support, the campus is quiet and gojo is sad :(. when he gets sent to missions, he doesn't get the same support. he's aware he's a special grade and don't need it but it's so boring to do it alone!

when utahime comes back from missions, she always brings back treats and souvenirs for everyone. yes, that includes her annoying junior who in return starts doing the same thing at his missions. she ends up bringing him sweets, like tons of sweets she thinks he'll like (he does). gojo started doing the same gesture but he tends to lie that he didn't bring anything for utahime--which she'll say she doesn't care. but by the time she returns to her room, she'll find a gift bag and a note placed on her desk from the same junior who likes to be dramatic about everything

since utahime is the top student at their campus and aces every exam they have. it's become a thing for her to lead their study sessions. she does her best to tutor and simplify things for them. gojo tends to be a distraction at first but tends to help her out on these sessions. they end up pass out next to each other with his uniform jacket placed on her as a blanket. the others often wake up early before those two and notes how peaceful they are

sugushoko definitely picks up on gojo's crush on utahime before gojo is even aware himself. they been quiet about it the whole time, just watching the disaster unfold. shoko brings up the idea of mentioning it to one of them at one point but geto wants to see how much longer until one of them realizes it or something funny happens

geto one day asks gojo who's his type. gojo's answer makes it so obvious he's describing utahime but he doesn't even know. geto teases him that he just described their senior. gojo just gives him an annoyed look and changes the subject

shoko just drops the information about gojo's crush to utahime out of the blue and utahime just gives her a disgusted look. "gojo just likes to be a brat." utahime goes into a long tangent about gojo. shoko notes the songstress definitely does not look at gojo like that except as an annoying junior and laughs to herself about it. poor gojo 🤭

utahime gets asked out a lot by upperclassmen and non-sorcerers. it definitely doesn't bother gojo! nope, not at all! but he makes it a goal to disturb whoever he sees talking to his senior when utahime should be studying or tutoring. their courtship is distracting the flow of education! utahime ends up apologizing for her junior's bratty actions

december 2005: gojo turns 16 and the new years are near. the trio decides to celebrate over break. everyone except utahime are present during this month. due to the songstress graduating in a few months, she's been occupied in missions back to back. it doesn't bother gojo that she's not present during his bday or the gang's winter break or for new years celebration. but he is annoyed he doesn't even get a simple text or email from her! what kind of senior is she not to acknowledge her junior's bday or greet a simple new years? he definitely does not miss her or wait for her message on his phone 💢🙄

what he doesn't expect is to find himself walking to campus in the crisp january weather after new years. he sees utahime sitting on one the benches. she stands up after noticing him and waves at him. gojo quickens his steps towards her, already planned out what snarky comment to say. what he doesn't expect is for her to suddenly reach out a big giftbag to him. gojo pauses and looks at her. "happy belated birthday and a happy new year, gojo"

utahime's gifts to him were handful of sweets, varying from different prefectures. there are mochi, chocolate, pastries, etc. one that stood out to him was a stuffed white cat keychain wearing some dark glasses. she states she saw it and thought it resembled him. she got matching ones for sugushoko as well and can't wait to give it give to them. gojo doesn't have a joke or anything in return to say and thanked her for the gifts. he doesn't end up using the keychain but places it in his desk inside his campus room. displaying it neatly next to his lamp and a picture of their friend group

gjhm rarely fights. sure, they get into arguments, bickering contests, loud banter--but fights are very rare. when they do fight, it's usually something that started from stubbornness, pettiness, even miscommunication. but they're both willing to apologize soon right after the heat of the moment ends. they don't like giving each other the cold shoulder

since gjhm are pretty young and are still inexperienced, i think them apologizing won't be so direct. they're both equally stubborn when it comes to each other and stumble with getting their thoughts across but they'll make it up halfway towards other means (likes small gifts, tea, nonchalant convos about it, etc)

look. i don’t just have a fic rec for this. i have a rec for a ship manifesto (original link | wayback machine) and rec list (LJ comm het-reccers | wayback machine)

Because of the slim canon interaction and the many obstacles to writing the pairing, it’s often done badly. But I think when it’s done well, it’s done very well; a writer who can keep the two characters true to the Remus and Hermione that we know and still write a convincing relationship between them tends to be a good writer. Consequently, there are some real gems among the fandom. In conclusion, yes, this is difficult to write and indeed to get your head around. But done well, it can be challenging, thought-provoking, fluffy, angsty, dark and hot. Often all at the same time. And in a fandom that ships cephalopods, this can only be a good thing.

first entry on that reclist is a ~10k E-rated fic titled after a shakespeare sonnet, and the rec begins:

This is by far my favorite fic in any fandom or ship. It's a beautiful story that depicts how these two characters slowly weave into each other.

She sighs contentedly and threads her fingers through his hair, her eyes still shut firmly against reality. What good is reality, she muses, if I can just pretend to get what I want?

The Heart by bloodsugarlove (7k, T). teacher/student told from teacher pov is always fascinating and the prose in this one is unique and lovely! note: doesn’t warrant the underage warning, no whiff of underage sex anywhere.

It's something of a scandal that Cho is seeker for Ravenclaw; many girls appear threatened by this, though they can't deny that is is rather decent at the position. Boys think it is fascinating, and Chang herself is arrogant in the most charming way. Not that Mr. Lupin really thinks so, mind you; it's a collective opinion, and anyway he has had quite his fill of arrogance. He has had quite his fill of a lot of things. He would really rather think of something else.

12. remus/luna

Stubby Boardman and the Cacao Bean by kestrelsan (2k, G), a remix fic!!! loved the original drabble and it was so cool to see it expanded into this oneshot.

To gleefully ride along the edge of it, to toss away all but your own discernment, to simply do what you would like to do so long as no one’s being harmed, to not worry about what your desires say about you, to call your godson’s half-dressed former girlfriend a bad idea to her waggishly smiling face at your kitchen table and to let yourself bask in the fallout, sated like a wolf that's helped itself to a lamb. Shelter at Your Door by starfishstar (13k, T): an andromeda doesn’t elope, marries and later leaves lucius au. the r/a relationship in this au is so well-written, their compatibility is so lovely, and although tonks is never born in this au, the r/t echoes are deliciously haunting!

"So," she said softly, pressing down against him, and Remus, following instinct at last, arched to meet her. "Are we doing this?" "Yes," Remus agreed, a whisper in her ear. "We're doing this." Careful not to sound judgemental about it, Andromeda asked, "Have you done this before?" With Remus and his insistence that everything about himself was dangerous and not to be allowed, it was difficult to know. He gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Yeah. Couple of times." "Oh?" she teased, still gentle. "What happened to being too dangerous for anything beyond friendship?" Remus' mouth made a wry twist. "It found itself on a collision course with being nineteen years old and horny, that's what happened to it."

He's strong, but she's not sure if he's that strong, and he's starting to look a little pale. "It can get rough after dark." "Indeed," Remus says, but he smiles almost politely. "See you," Faith replies, and she tries to shut the door quietly behind her.

there's a really fun intersection of ideas coming together to affect how people engage with fiction and stories right now and all of them are bad

any story that contains harmful/problematic subject matter supports and condones it, therefore it is always bad to have any kind of problematic or harmful subject matter in any story. also, the author probably does those things themselves if they're writing about it. so they must be an evil person

any story that has conflict is bad because conflict and bad things happening is upsetting and that means it's harmful and I can't handle that and so no story should ever have conflict or sad endings or upsetting things. yes, even when I'm going to genres that literally promise those kind of things happening. what do you mean people died in this post-apocalyptic show? what do you mean upsetting thing happened in this horror novel? inexcusable

every single story must cater to Me and My Wants and what the creator intended or even what other people can get out of it doesn't matter. it didn't give me what I wanted and therefore it is Bad

canon = only what is directly stated in a story, unusually only through dialogue. therefore if a character doesn't say something, it's not true. or if a theme or message or idea is not directly stated, it's not there. the only thing that matters in a work is easily stated plot points, the summary of events. and also the ship, of course. (subtext only really matters when it's about proving a ship is canon)

and it's leading to a point where the only kind of story some people can engage with are conflict-free, sanitized, shippy, fandom-style romances where everything is filled with cute tropes and nothing bad really happens and the couple gets together in the end and it's not interested in looking into any kind of deeper or more complex themes or questions

there's a serious problem with media/literature literacy right now - the ability to analyze a work for deeper meanings and draw conclusions not directly stated in the text or engage with it beyond shipping two characters together (and that's not solely the fault of fandom and shipping/fanfic culture) but then that is intersecting with this rising purity culture that wants to scrub any mention of something "impure" or "problematic" (defined, of course, subjectively) from art

so we have audiences who can't engage with dark subject matter and actually look at how the text uses them or what it's saying or why it's there (sometimes just because fiction is a reflection of the actual world we live in and those things happen) and instead just labels anything with dark subject matter "evil/problematic", anything that is sad or upsetting (to them personally) "bad writing", and wholeheartedly makes statements like "this horror novel is bad because it has dark subject matter" or "tv shows are supposed to always be happy, so it's bad that you the author wrote something sad"

and I don't know where I'm going with this other than being frustrated. I know that I'm in a different position when it comes to media than a lot of people in fandom spaces; I was an English Literature major with a minor in Film Studies and I work in film - I'm literally more trained to be able to analyze literature and media and I genuinely think there is a huge problem with how media/lit analysis is taught right now that leads to a lot of people having a warped understanding of it (my god, I have Thoughts on the whole "the curtains are blue" or "red = passion" type analysis)

but it is extremely frustrating as someone who doesn't even particularly like fluffy, happy, no conflict stories to see people argue that those are the only acceptable stories, or to see people be bold and entitled enough to tell creators what/how they should write (and I critique what I find bad writing all the time, I recognize that, but the criteria for bad writing should not be "made me sad" or "i didn't like it personally")

or to see people harassing horror authors for putting upsetting subject matter in their horror stories or going on moral crusades because a story had problematic things in it without even stopping to look at HOW those things existed in the work (like is it actually a work steeped in hateful rhetoric reflecting the author's harmful views or is the bad thing literally portrayed as a bad thing that happened in the work)

and that's not even stepping into the whole media/lit literacy issue of every single idea being spoon-fed to audiences now, of 50 "(Blank) Ending Explained" videos the minute any new show/movie comes out, regardless of whether those works are incredibly straightforward and you only need to watch the media to understand the ending (Ted Lasso Ending Explained?? Really?? not a subtle show) OR if those works are a lot more metaphorical/abstract and there actually ISN'T any direct explanation for what happened / what it means (discussing the ending of Annihilation should be a lot more about what the work is saying, what thought it leaves you with and why it ends there, not some kind of plot breakdown - a discussion, not a summary)

and perhaps this is a message to myself as well. a reminder to go back to engaging with deeper films and new novels and analyzing what I take from the work and a little less time just pulling ship/character details that would make for a good Tumblr post out of a story with a fandom following.

but it's also me going, please, please, please. for the love of god. accept that stories that have bad, upsetting things in them, that have sad or bittersweet endings, are valid and good and ok to have. we have had them since the start of humanity, because stories give us a way to explore those things.

and sometimes, stories also just give us a chance to go "wouldn't it be fucked up if" and that's okay too.

If you're like me, you want to know what categories you'll be making nominations for. Here are the 2023 categories:

Fanfiction of the Year The BEST OF THE BEST that you've read this year. It can be anything from a short one-shot, a spanning multi-chapter piece, ship or no ship, fluff, angst, whatever you want that you think is the best of the year? Nominate it here!

Best Leonardo Portrayal

Fiction that portrays Leonardo in the best ways that you enjoy!

Best Donatello Portrayal

Fiction that portrays Donatello in the best ways that you enjoy!

Best Raphael Portrayal

Fiction that portrays Raphael in the best ways that you enjoy!

Best Michelangelo Portrayal

Fiction that portrays Michelangelo in the best ways that you enjoy!

Best Non-Turtle Portrayal

This is to highlight the best portrayal of a NON-TURTLE character within the nominated work!

Please include the CHARACTER NAME with the TITLE, AUTHOR, and URL so we know which character in that piece that you want to highlight!

Best AU (Alternate Universe)

This is for the fics that change things up from the normal known turtle universes. Anything is allowed as long as it is not from a canon universe within the turtle spaces. 

Such examples can include making cast live in a high fantasy world or maybe they're pirates! This is where you should nominate your favorite alternate universes!

Best Multi-Chapter

These nominations cater to the fics out there that are more than one chapter. Any genre of TMNT fic is allowed to be nominated but it must have more than one chapter to be counted.

Best One Shot

These nominations are for those short one piece fics that are just a mere chapter long. Bite sized pieces of fun! Any genre of TMNT fic is allowed here and the only requirement is that it has to be only one chapter long.

Best Angst

These are the fics out there that make characters go through (usually mental) anguish in some way. Usually these are the 'hard' fics to read, such as things that make you really feel remorse or pain for what they're going through, but more for the heartache feeling.

Best Fluff

These are usually the fics that leave you with butterflies or the urge to "squee" as one might put it. Overall happy feelings are associated with fluffy fics, such as the feeling you get when you pet something soft, heartfelt and kind.

Best Smut

Typically smut refers to a scene or an entire fic. This can be anything from a steamy one shot or a hot multiple chapter fic that really hits that XXX or pornographic scenes. This would be where you would nominate the fics that might have had your toes curl in anticipation for the characters having sex, sexual relations, or simply something erotic done together.

Best Squick

This refers to the type of fiction that may have scenes that are defined as "hardcore" or not everyone's cup of tea. These can refer to fics with things like non-con, dub-con, gore, hyper violence or murder.

Best Comedy

The fics that are essentially made to make the reader laugh! Usually made to provoke humor, or are naturally funny regardless of what is happening in the fiction. If you laughed a lot at a specific fic, here would be where you nominate it!

Best Non-Tcest

This category often refers to both ship and non-shippy fiction regarding the turtles and someone else. Any nominations here can be general or ship related, provided that the ship is not focused on tcest. Examples of these would be things with April and Donatello (either together or simply best friends) or Raphael and Mona.

Best Of ALL Time

THIS IS A SPECIAL NOMINATION THAT BREAKS THE RULES OF OUR "ONLY 2023 FICS!"

This is where you would nominate your FAVORITE FIC OF ALL TIME. It can be from ANY year. 

It can be any genre, ship, non-ship, etc. It does not have to be finished. It can be multichapter or simply a one shot from twenty years ago that you just adore to this day.

This is ONLY nomination that does not have to be from 2023.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

35. I have more on other sites, but since I've made my AO3 account, that's how many I've posted there.

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

656,547. Give or take a couple thousand.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Currently? Dream SMP. But I also have an Inscryption WIP and a couple Kpop WIPs that I really should get back to one of these days. orz But I've written for all sorts of fandoms over the years.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

5) Its Suffering Was Real [Inscryption]

This is the one that came as the biggest shock to me when I went and looked at my kudos count in preparation for this write-up. Like, really? People like the fic where I torture the sassy robot trapped in the body of a stoat for 7k words that much??

4) A Shoulder to Lean On [Avatar: The Last Airbender]

WHERE did all these people come from, I have like 6 comments on this thing (not counting my replies)??? I mean, I'm flattered, but ??!!?!

3) Accepting Amelioration [Voltron: Legendary Defender]

I mean, it's a Voltron fic posted back when the fandom was in full swing, it doesn't really surprise me the kudos counter is considerable, though I am still surprised it got that much traction considering the fic is gen and not shippy. Am still proud I made the first daemon AU in the entire fandom, though, if this is my claim to fame, then I'm ok with that. :p

2) Temporary Shelter [Astro / VIXX]

I seriously have no freaking clue how this little self indulgent Kpop crossover fic became so popular, I really don't. I mean, Kpop crossovers are niche at the best of times, and these two groups aren't exactly the most popular Kpop fandoms on AO3 if you know what I mean. It basically started as "wouldn't it be fun if my two favorite Kpop groups were secretly friends all this time? How would I have that happen, tho?" and then snowballed from there. I, uh. I'm glad so many other people like it, ig? 0_0

Of course it's the MHA pet AU fic. Of course. OF COURSE-

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Absolutely. It's only fair I reply if someone takes the time to read on my work and actually give me feedback about it, wouldn't you say? Plus, like most authors, I enjoy talking about my own work, so sue me. >:p

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I don't usually do angsty endings; I prefer happy or at least bittersweet ones. I guess by default, it has to be the fic where I slowly killed off America and China from Axis Powers Hetalia for 13k words, while the rest of the cast had already been dead for centuries at that point. So yes, the entire cast of that series was dead by the end of that fic. :))) IN MY DEFENSE, ok, I was actually trying to give them a bittersweet ending by reuniting them with all of their old friends and family by finally letting them rest after so long alone, but it still turned out really sad. TT TT It's basically my only fic where I can't go back and reread it more than once every couple of years, because I still end up a sobbing mess by the end.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Well, I guess that's what you define "happiest" as. The most cathartic? The one with the least amount of trauma and extreme bodily injury incurred by the characters? 🤔 I guess by the latter definition, it would Kaleidoscopic Perceptions, a very fluffy USPH college AU that I actually enjoyed writing a lot despite me not usually enjoying romance or college AUs.

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

No, thankfully. I've gotten a couple kinda weird comments, and of course the obligatory "It's been X months since you updated were you aware?????" comments, but no outright negativity.

9. Do you write smut?

LMAO. Absolutely not.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Yes! I really love crossovers. I have a few common fallbacks that fit with a lot of fandoms (daemon AUs, Firefly AUs, etc.), but I also enjoy fandom-specific crossovers when I can figure out how to pull them off.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

No idea. I hope not!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Just once for this Gravity Falls fic.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

Yes. It had a few ups and downs, but it was overall a really positive experience, and I think it turned out really well!

14. What‘s your all-time favorite ship?

idk that I have an ALL TIME favorite ship, especially since I hardly ever ship anything, but Frobin is pretty choice, I gotta say.

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Er, none of them, hopefully? I hope that I eventually get to finish all my WIPs at some point, even if it might take me awhile. >.>; But I suppose if I had to pick ONE to abandon, I'd probably pick Written In, my D&D Inscryption crossover AU. I like the IDEA for it, but writing it out is like pulling teeth, and after the first installment where the party gets together, I don't really have a lot of ideas on where to take the plot. :/ Like I have the general overarching idea but no plot structure or anything but small disconnected story beats.

16. What’s your writing strengths?

I like to think I do a pretty good job with descriptions while not bogging the story down too much with too much detail?

17. What’s your writing weaknesses?

Uuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh, staying motivated ig. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if you're asking my weakness about mechanics, though, uh... exposition, I guess? Dialogue in general, sometimes.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

If there is actual information included in the other language, then you better provide a translation. If it's just for flavor, though, have at it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

TMNT, specifically the 2003 show. It's never been posted anywhere on the internet and never will. :)

20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?

Becoming Real, a Kpop fanfic based on VIXX's Voodoo Doll MV. However, it can easily stand on its own as its own original work. I consider it the most accessible story I've ever written, and it also was just very easy for me to write. Writing is often like pulling teeth for me, but not this story.
