#fma mob psycho au

thought I should collect my vague fma/mp100 thoughts here to make it easier to have them all in one place !

basic plot/character stuff

ed and al are both talented young psychics who got their powers when they were pretty young. ed got his powers around the time their dad (a CRAZY powerful psychic) left, and al got his shortly after their mom died :(

they thought they could use their powers to bring their mom back as a spirit, but it went. very bad. instead, an evil spirit took advantage of them and started fucking Eating Their Life Forces. al freaked out and astral projected out of panic, but his entire body was consumed so now he's. stuck like that. ed managed to exorcise the spirit, but not until after his arm and leg are devoured too

their motivation is to get rid of evil spirits that take advantage of people and hurt them like this, which is what takes them to roy mustang's door

roy mustang is a fake psychic pretending to have pyrokinesis (he just has a flamethrower behind his desk) because I think that's funny. he's running an exorcism business like spirits and such, except he has a larger crew -- mostly his friends he can call up to do odd jobs for him, like fixing the leaky pipes that make noises that make people think their house is haunted or whatever. he's also the only exorcism business that's willing to hire a teenager, so that's how the elrics end up working for him

in addition to mustang's crew of non-psychics, he also has hughes, who is tragically a ghost. there is definitely some tragic back story here that I'm still working on hashing out, but they've kind of come to terms about it now. he still haunts his family, who know he's there, and he agrees to help out mustang with Actual Spirit Issues when the elrics are unavailable

the elrics' quest to deal with manipulative evil spirits leads them to encounter the sins, who are all very powerful evil spirits. one of the first ones they deal with is greed, who they mostly exorcise, but he manages to just barely survive, dimple style. he's looking for ways to bring himself back up to full power

enter: ling yao, recently awakened psychic who is also looking for ways to become more powerful. he keeps over-exerting his psychic powers and exhausting himself, which is how the elrics come across him mostly unconscious. he's very excited to meet another esper, but he makes the mistake of asking why al doesn't possess ed, since he knows that can enhance someone's psychic powers. the elrics are both Very Sensitive about that kind of topic and tell him to fuck Right Off

bad idea, because then he goes and finds a spirit of his own. both he and greed approach their mutually beneficial consensual possession situation for self-serving reasons. both of them look at each other and think "yeah I can definitely manipulate this guy into making me more powerful" [fast forward a couple months to when they've become Extremely attached to each other] oopsies

lan fan is a telepath. ling did not know this, so he tried to act soooo normal about being possessed around her. that didn't work for long, jackass! she got so fucking angry with him when she heard a literal devil on his shoulder, and even though ling stopped her from destroying greed, that evil spirit is on THIN ICE.

scar's family was killed in a psychic terrorist incident (think kimblee if he was part of claw). he's one of those really late bloomer espers -- it wasn't until this traumatic event that his psychic powers awoke, and he hates them because of the link to the event. now he's on his vengeance based quest, going after psychics that abuse their powers

things I'm still working out the details for

mustang was involved in some high profile fuck-up. kind of like separation arc reigen except uhhh people Died. hughes was likely one of those people. no one has enough proof to outright prove he did it, but he is definitely linked to the event, especially because he was a pretty public psychic figure at the time. in reality, it was the fault of the sins, but it's harder to find evidence when it was evil spirits doing it

olivier + the rest of briggs are an anti-psychic terrorism government agency (kinda like joseph) and initially scar is one of their targets, but they end up recruiting him bc they have a common goal

eventually scar starts working at spirits and such (olivier's assignment so he can keep an eye on mustang) but he fucking hates it. oh my god I cannot emphasize how much he hates it. imagine reigen serizawa and mob at spirits and such except none of them can stand each other. that's mustang, scar, and ed having to work together.

mei is also a psychic! she kind of latches onto both scar and alphonse (separately) because she needs some help killing someone. they have very different reactions to this.

the someone she's trying to kill is father, a super powerful psychic who's been orchestrating much of the psychic terrorism, as well as directing the sins. he's like if toichiro had a specialty for spirit wrangling like matsuo

miscellaneous au details

ed and al's auras (and al's spirit form) are mostly gold, ed's leaning more coppery and al's more of a green-gold. ed's kind of has the look of fire crackling around him. ling's aura is a blend of red and purple and has a kind of watercolor/bruise look. it's more vibrant and has more purple when greed is possessing him. mei's is mostly pink with some red.

mob psycho spirits range from completely abstract to mostly humanoid and frequently have multiple forms in between. hughes looks mostly humanoid most of the time, but can go simplified and silly when gushing about his family. al has a more powerful form that looks like the full suit of armor but he doesn't like using it very often, so most of the time he's a long blob that's just kind of armor shaped (like when the armor is simplified for silly moments). greed at full power looked like the ultimate shield, after being weakened he looks more like a dimple-like blob that resembles the face in ling's mindscape. when possessing ling and both of them are using their powers, ling gets lines on his face like on the ultimate shield (like dimple's cheek spots!)

other spirits: pride looks how you'd expect. horrible shadow spirit. envy bodysnatches a lot. wrath has been possessing a politician for Literal Decades. it's no good. I'm not sure about the other sins

people's feelings on possession range from the elrics (Fuck No), to hughes and mustang (if necessary to get a job done), to greedling (they like it like this actually)

the rockbells aren't psychics but they live kinda adjacent to the psychic world bc theyre family friends with the elrics + hohenheim, so they know more than most about psychic powers

FMA modern au where the Elrics’ dad still collected vintage suits of armor and Al still got stuck in one but the setting no longer provides any sort of plausible deniability for why someone would go around dressed like that, and so every time they go out in public they have to pretend that Al is just really into historical re-enactment.

So on AO3 I got My Hero Academia, Detective Conan/Magic Kaito and Before the Coffee gets cold. Outside of AO3 I got some Naruto, FMA, One Piece, Bungo Stray Dogs, wips too (and there was that time I was writing crack fic about Mob Psycho here on tumblr with Panda, that was fun). There's probably some other I've forgotten too- oh yeah there was some Hetalia at some point.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I tend to but lately, I haven't really kept up with it. I am sorry. I should get to it at some point soon, but be aware every comment is read and enjoyed.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Morituro, probably? Considering both All Might and Izuku died so, yeah.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

I like to think it's Before The Coffee Gets Cold - The Sisters, since this fic is about closure after death.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Oh! I got once a hate comment on who the f- is this, to which i answered with an essay or two. I probably shouldn't have but also it was really fun at the time. Otherwise I don't believe I do.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I can barely write romance, smut is way out of my reach. I also don't really have any interest in writing any, to be honest.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

Crossovers are probably right after Time Travel in term of things I love. Not one I've written but special mention to that one time I dream about Zabuza from naruto/Reigen from mob psycho as a ship.

Don't know if it's the craziest but I had a The Rising of the Shield Hero/Naruto one started once, there was also that Detective Conan/My Hero Academia one started with Panda that the idea was so good. We should get back to it, one day.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not that I know of.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

*squint* I don't think so (unless it was done without my knowledge) but strong maybe back in my ff.net era. Though I did translate some fics myself before (it wasn't done very well, but I did try back then, and it did help me a lot learning english. Problem was I'm not good at grammar stuff.)

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Once again, there was that cracky Mob Psycho one here somewhere. Also, some projects with Panda that are really good except words hard for both of us.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

...yeah no idea right now, come ask me another time. (It tends to change on the day, but also right now I'm on a no-romance streak so, better luck next time)

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

*crying* all of them.

Okay so, first of all, a wip is never dead unless I decide to bury it. Which doesn't happens. I still have hope one day I'll get back to them.

Right now I really want to work on Dad For All and the DCMK NOC AU except, word hard and planning harder. But I'll get there, one day, even if it's in 10 years.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I honestly got no idea? I probably got some I'm just not sure what it could be.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

word hard. Also no idea how grammar works beyond "whatever feels right to me".

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Eeh, I probably wouldn't do it because it's bothersome having to look up a translation while you're reading a fic, unless it's something that fits with the context or just a few words here and there. Also switching languages in the middle of thinking is so hard to do, why would you do this to me.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Naruto, back in uuuhhhhhh probably middle school. It was a long time ago. Nothing is left of what I could have written then. (Also close to that time period was D.Gray-man).

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

Huge huge huge fondness for Before The Coffee Gets Cold - The Sisters, probably because Im very fond of that universe and also when grief is explored and closure is sought. I also really like the flowers have water.

Who the f- is this and Noisy as the dead are my funny projects though, I have lot of fun working on them.

I typically draw whatever interests me depending on the day, but I probably should've made a list first to make it clear what those interests are.

Note: I'm very fic reliant. I could like a show but what REALLY gets me into them is the fan content bc they tend to flesh things out more, in a way that I can understand, and make me appreciate characters/events that were not properly explored in canon. Idk if that's gonna be an issue but I'm sure there are elitist people out there who only claim canon content while bashing everyone else for enjoying fan theories and aus.

🚫Oh and some proship warning, I guess? (I've seen other artists include it so..) Excluding my notps, I'd read any story with ships I probably didn't know existed so long as: I already like one or two of the characters in the ship, the thought of them together makes me curious instead of repulsed, and if the story itself looked too interesting for me to ignore.🚫

Haven't caught up to the manga yet but loosely following the anime. Read quite a bit of lengthy Deku centric fics, and that + what I've gotten so far from the show are what fuels my headcanon aus when I draw them.

Naruto

Tbh I only watched the og kids Naruto when I was young and any shippuden knowledge I have is a mix of posts from other fans, Google, and fics. Already said this before in an older post but I read a lot of time travel/fix its so I just assume that when similar events are included in more than 2 timetravel fics (if it's still set in naruto's timeline and not like, minato's or pre konoha), then that's probably what happened in canon. I also just Google any shippuden powers or characters I'm not familiar with, which is quite a lot but it works for me.

ATLA

Finished it years ago. Memories are vague but posts from other fans and canon adjacent fics help me remember.

HP

Finished the books years ago, probably before or around the same time as ATLA. Only properly watched 5/8 of the movies. Heavily read a lot of fics. Memories of the og content is vague and sometimes I'm not sure if what I know is canon or just widely loved fanon (like the Black library).

2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 372,792, which is about what I thought

3. What fandoms do you write for? Currently it's BNHA, FMA, and Mob Psycho 100. But I have also written for Soul Eater in the past and may look into revisiting that series.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos? Auras Tell All, Shaken, Not Stirred, Mocha Choco Latte, Of Ink-Dipped Petals and Tattooed Hearts, and Salted Caramel Doubleshot

5. Do you respond to comments? I try my best to! Sometimes I get behind on it though.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Ignoring all of my Soul Eater fics, since they're old and I somewhat want to rewrite them, I think the angstiest ending would be To the Moon, my only Hanako-Kun fic.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Right now, I think the happiest ending is my Camie/Jirou fic, mother tongue, which was written for the @novapulsezine. But, most of my fics have a happy ending.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Not really. I think I'm pretty lucky.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? You know it ;) And I write a wide spectrum of it, but mostly it's KiriBaku or ShinKami smut when I do write.

10. Do you write crossovers? I've dabbled with it, but never have posted anything.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Teenage Dirtbag, my FMA HS AU fic. I've had plans for it for years, but never can seem to get the words on paper TT_TT

16. What are your writing strengths? Description of settings and internal dialogue

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Probably action scenes-I feel like they tend to fall flat. But, there's always something I could improve upon in my writing.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I think that it would be okay as long as it's thoroughly checked to make sure what you're saying is accurate. I tend to shy away from it, just because I don't want to offend anyone.

19. First fandom you wrote for? On AO3, it was Soul Eater. In general, it was probably Twilight or Ouran High School Host Club with my friends during classes in middle/high school.

20. Favorite fic you’ve written? It's a tie between Mocha Choco Latte and Shaken, Not Stirred. I love both of these babies and they are my heart and soul.

I have more fma/mob psycho thoughts I forgot to add to the masterpost, this time about psychic specialties

I think ed is probably like teru in that he tends to pick up new techniques pretty quickly and knows how to do a lot of different things with his powers, but he mostly sticks to telekinesis because that's what he knows best

al was the same way, but as a spirit he's got some other abilities. he mostly does poltergeist kinda stuff

This has been something that's been on my mind for a while now, and with all the negative criticism towards people like YandereDev, Vivziepop, and J.K. Rowling... I felt like I needed to say something:

It’s best to separate the creation from the creator, and, if anything, just appreciate it.

You don’t have to like the work, and you don’t have to dislike it either. If the creators are just jerks and/or assholes, then it’s not a serious thing to worry about. Unless they’ve committed serious crimes (i.e. murder, sex trafficking, pedophilia, etc.), then it’s petty to boycott them just because “they said something that hurt my feelings”.

There’s a handful of artists out there that I don’t like for personal reasons, but I don’t think the same about their art. Their art on it’s own is good and amazing, and, I can tell, they put a lot of time and effort into what they do. Yeah, I don’t like the artist themselves, but that doesn’t mean that I should think the same about their art.

There's games that I enjoy playing, movies I enjoy watching, and series I enjoy watching (be it western cartoons or anime). But... I don't either dislike the creators of those games or voice actors for those series, because I don't really have an opinion on them. I respect their work and what they did for the creation, but, they've never really done anything to me personally to steer me into creating a certain view of them.

Of course, when they go so far as to be convicted of owning child porn, or commit defamation against co-workers (and any other illegal issues)... that's when I'll step in and boycott them. Because it's not a little petty matter of "they said/did something that I don't like"--that "reason to dislike someone" is just stupid, in my opinion. When legal boundaries are crossed, that's when the exception comes into play, and I'd say it's within justified reason to "not like the creator/actor/etc.".

There's creators that I like, but I don't have an opinion on them as a person. I don't have a reason to dislike them, but I also don't have a reason to say "Heck yeah! They're cool people!" I like the ideas and concepts that fanatic writers come up with in their crossovers and AUs. I like the ideas that Game Developers come up with for their games. I like the way some actors portray their characters in the movies they star in. But, I don't know anything about these people as.... people. 

Just like many artists or people who come across my work don't really know much about me as a person. Some people, who may just have a small conversation with me, might say that I'm pretty chill or nice; meanwhile, others might just absolutely hate my guts and say that I'm an absolute asshole. I'm not confirming denying either of the two views--though, I will admit, that there have been many moments, especially in my early internet years when I was still a young teenager--where I was an absolute Problem Child to many artists here on dA, especially in the FMA Fandom. But, that's what it is. I, and the other person, just don't know each other well enough to say either "I like them" or "I don't like them". All we can do is just go by our actions.

Unfortunately, though, we live in a day and age where everyone criticizes and harasses others just because "they said something mean to me!1! REEEEEE!", and everything is blanketed in a “Guilty by Association” view. It’s what’s led to SJWs running rampant, and it’s now what’s leading to the snowballing of Cancel Culture. Just because someone said something that someone else might not like... that doesn’t mean that they should be harassed and bullied by some mob. Negative comments like that can take people in a direction that no one should have to go through.

And it's become worse now that the Ranting Community on YouTube is as big as it is, and, speaking as someone who used to be in that Community... it's more than just drama. There's some users who are psychos who thing that the way to get back at someone for making fun of them is to find out where they live and try to kill them. It's a twisted world that's being  developed from that along with all the SJWs and radical-left-wing-extremists and feminazis out there that's just stirring the pot more and more.

Nothing can be enjoyed anymore because everyone wants to be so hyper-focused on a creator, who, one day, was just... having a bad day, and said a few snippy sarcastic remarks towards someone, and expand it to where the big picture can't even be seen. All that matters to them is just this tiny little detail and nothing else. These things we enjoy are because we want to escape from this negativity, and we can't even enjoy that because it has to be something negative the creator said. I mean, if I found out that one of my favorite voice actors was a homophobe... I wouldn't care. Just because I'm lesbian and part of the LGBT doesn't mean that I have to dislike someone who doesn't agree with me 100%. Hell, I wouldn't even want to associate with any group that agrees with me 100%, because, to put it simply, that's called a cult.

But, this whole mindset of these controlling people who think they know what's best for everyone with their negative criticism on people needs to end. Just because the creator of a game, or an artist is bad just because "they said something mean", is just so stupid. And this sort of thing really needs to end. We need to stop bowing to the mob and say "we're going to like what we want to like", because the creation and creators are two separate entities.

So, if you have a book series, or a movie, or a game that you like... just enjoy it because it’s something you enjoy. Who cares about some “mean” thing the author said to someone else? Just because someone “said something mean to someone else” that doesn’t mean they’re the equivalent of a felon on death row, who’s committed far worse crimes.

Enjoy what you like, regardless of what others say.
