Musings on Danse's political/moral alignments

I saw a post mentioning how a lot of the Fo4 fandom associates Danse with current American conservatives. I disagree, and just want to ramble about my feelings on the subject.

Yes, he is a meathead asshole.

I totally understand taking Danse at face value and assigning him mentally to the "bigoted bootlicker" category. That's totally valid. Unless you travel with him extensively and pay close attention to his ambient dialogue, it's understandable to figure that's just how Bethesda wrote him.

Danse's backstory

To understand Danse's moral and political standings, we have to take a look at his origin story. As far as Danse is aware, he grew up alone in the Capital Wasteland. He was an orphan that scrounged for scrap metal and other junk, which he sold to get by. He had no known family, parental figures, or mentors of any sort. He had one friend, Cutler, who was around his age. The Brotherhood of Steel, much like the real U.S. military, preyed on people like this for recruitment missions. Teenagers of low socioeconomic status - hungry, lonely, desperate, unsure of their purpose. Of course Danse and Cutler would elect to join the Brotherhood, which promised them food, protection, somewhere to sleep at night, and above all else - camaraderie. During one of his affinity dialogues, Danse admits that joining the Brotherhood seemed like the only way to escape his situation.

The Brotherhood took advantage of Danse and other soldiers' naivety and lack of experience by instilling fear and hatred of the misunderstood (synths, ghouls, mutants) and using those negative feelings to shape their training. Dare to disagree with their belief system? At best, you would be disciplined. Verbally abused by the Elder and shunned by your friends and mentors. At worst, you'd be booted out - back to the Wasteland you had been taught to fear unconditionally. Back to starvation, radiation, poverty, and isolation.

After a year of service, Cutler disappeared on a mission. Danse searched for him for three weeks, finally tracing him to a super mutant hive. Cutler had been exposed to FEV and had become a super mutant. Danse killed him. He admits that he doesn't know if it was the right thing to do, but it was what he had been trained to do.

That was the first circumstance that really gave me a glimpse into the nuance of Danse's beliefs. Like...wait, he questions his oh-so-precious-and-infallible training?

Is he still a douche to almost all non-human NPCs? Yes. However, I don't think he knows how to be anything other than a condescending, militant, Brotherhood heavy. That kind of attitude is what got him promoted so quickly. It's what got him out of his bottom-of-the-pecking-order trainee position, where he had felt singled out by his superiors. He learned that bigotry and cold-heartedness were the only methods of survival and success in the Brotherhood.

His character arc

Danse is not meant to be a one-dimensional, blatantly bigoted character. If he was, I don't think Bethesda would have made him romance-able. In fact, that's why you can't romance him until after his character arc quest: Blind Betrayal.

Spoiler alert! On this quest, you find out that Danse is a synth. He had no idea, and has a subsequent identity crisis that leaves him suicidal. This is the breaking point in the struggle between his own innate morality and his Brotherhood training. His default stance is that he should be killed to uphold the Brotherhood's code — he even offers to do the deed himself to protect the Sole Survivor from disciplinary action (a true testament to the brutality of the Brotherhood — Danse would rather die than allow Sole, his best friend, to face Maxson's wrath). However, through charisma checks, you can remind him of his own humanity and convince him not to harm himself. This breakthrough leads him to recognize that synths are truly nothing to be afraid of.

After Blind Betrayal, he will agree with most dialogue options supporting synths. According to the wiki, any leftover dislikes regarding synth-related dialogue are glitches.

There are other moments in separate quests that reference his moral confusion — for example, he likes when you help Kent, who is a ghoul, but doesn't like if you flirt with Holly, also a ghoul (maybe that's just some jealousy, lmao).

He also dislikes when you give Virgil, a mutant scientist, the serum that will help him return to his human form. My personal headcanon is that seeing Virgil cure himself forces Danse to address the fact that he might have been able to save Cutler, but killed him instead, due to his Brotherhood brainwashing.

Evidence of Danse's fiscal/economic beliefs

Danse is a COMRADE. You heard me. This man's pussy pops for socialized medicine. When you walk through Milton General Hospital, he says: "Facilities like this were funded by privately owned corporations more interested in making a profit than helping mankind."

You heard me, this man hates capitalism. Behold:

"Vault-Tec built places like this to conduct unethical experiments on human beings. Just thinking about it makes me sick."

"It was corporations like this that put the last nail in the coffin for mankind. They exploited technology for their own gains, pocketing the cash and ignoring the damage they'd done."

"Private corporations like Vault-Tec ruined mankind. All that brainpower put to waste..."

"This is disgusting. I can't believe Mass Fusion dumped these barrels here. This is the perfect example of how environmentally irresponsible the ancient corporations behaved."

"This is exactly the reason that science never belonged in the private sector."

Ugh. Really gets me goin'.

Conclusion

He has several other comments that suggest he is generally anti-war, is very pro-education, shows appreciation for the arts, loves children and animals...several things that conservatives couldn't care less about. He reacts angrily to greed, assaulting or harassing any non-hostiles (including synths, ghouls, and mutants), turning your back on beggars, harming non-hostile animals, etc. In my opinion, he's a pretty stand-up guy once he completes his character arc.

Does he still love the taste of boots? Yeah, and he probably always will. :/

Bethesda did him so dirty by not finishing his character arc. The fact that he still gushes about the Brotherhood and acts as if he's still in their ranks after Blind Betrayal is pretty clear evidence that he's a generally unfinished character. I think he had the potential to become a more accepting, radicalized, philanthropic individual after recognizing the shortcomings of the Brotherhood's ideals.

But yeah. I love this handsome dumbass, and I personally consider him a comrade, not a conservative. Kudos if you read this far into my crazed ramblings!

My mind just went completely blank when I read this lmao. I’m really bad with vague questions like this. I’m also not really sure what counts as a rarepair?

Off the top of my head though. . . . . .

I ship Harry from HP with pretty much everyone, he makes a good fandom bicylce tbh, but especially with older Death Eaters. I also have a huge soft spot for Sirius/Regulus, especially in arranged marriage AUs.

I ship quite a few TAZ rarepairs because I don’t like shipping the canon ships, but I especially like Taako/Lup/Barry, taacocest, Taako/Brad (I really love Taako), Aubrey/Hollis, and Fitzroy/Gray.

As you all know already, I LOVE polymechs but especially like Jonny/Nastya and Jonny/TS. Ashes/Ulysses is a great Mechs ship too, they should kiss. Jonny/GPT/Bertie is good too, but the angst and death stresses me out. I just want them to be happy.

I ship Jon from TMA with pretty much every other avatar, but I especially enjoy Oliver/Jon. I also ship Nikola with Jude which I feel should be way more popular but there’s absolutely nothing for them? Evil and sadistic queer girlfriends who murder together stay together. I also have a completely ridiculous ship idea that involves Evan Lukas being put in an arranged marriage with Jon (as a fully realized Beholding avatar) so that he can survive without escaping the Entities and to strengthen the ties between the Beholding and the Lonely.

Since I’ve started playing The Arcana, I’ve fallen in love with a giant Arcana polyship but I also really like specific triads with the Apprentice and Asra, especially if the third is Lucio. I think their dynamic would be fun.

For Dragon Age, I like Hawke/Carver, Hawke/Gamlen, Krem/Inquisitor, and Fenris/Danarius. I just generally have a soft spot for Hawkecest.

I don't have much plotwise yet but i'll leave y'all with this:

indrid cold in the place of Nick Valentine, except he was originally a human archivist/researcher, augmented with a computer that attempted to predict the future, using his human knowledge as a constraint for vision possibilities. these days he only solves, a la minority report, the most catastrophic crimes that he can predict, like massive settlement murders or the CPG massacre, (this universe's Silver Bridge for indrid,) which gets him in hot water with a local gang who wants to use him to predict shit. yes, he's a synth. yes, he still has the red glasses and ratty clothes. and yes, he's just like he is in canon, which makes his nog fixation a... messy affair.

it's been a while since I touched fallout 4 but hey. guess it's time to watch playthroughs and get brushed up again

I might pull a "here's my 999 au, a month late" and expand on this later. it won't be an exact parallel, of course - like there's not nearly enough NPCs or PCs to go around to fill all the fo4 companion roles, and it will only follow one set storyline, where Aubrey (in keeping with Amnesty themes) joins the railroad, and all the factions gradually unite, in their own way, to fight the evil that's corrupting the institute (see, another thing I'm tweaking, a straight up Shaun plotline with Aubrey's parents would be heartbreaking). the factions would be less like their fallout versions and more like their amnesty institutions.

I would also have to take plot threads from amnesty and weave them into the world of fallout 4, in keeping with canon so we can have stuff like. H2Whoa, Fallout edition. (would that just - would that just be fucking Nuka World??????? goddamnit)

and the characters would follow their Amnesty characterizations from the very start, which would require tweaking the backstories of the fo4 characters they're replacing, and some stuff will either have to be torched, made up, or reshaped. but hey, that's the fun of AU-ville, and it's not like I haven't done something like that before.

i have a lot of loose headcanons about what ronto and the surrounding great lakes area could look like in the fallout universe mostly just bc i live here & because i think analyzing canadian politics through fallout’s worldbuilding is really interesting. i started writing some stuff about it as part of this post but it got too long, so i’m gonna finish it and post it after. i really want to conceptualize potential canadian factions, what the annexation of canada by the US looked like w/ canada’s own shitty history that in many ways is similar to the US’s - mostly unknown on a global scale, etc.

ive been balls deep in the fo4 fandom for years now and something no one ever mentions abt maccready is his ghoul fetish?? i guess people arent really aware of it since you have to have him with you at certain places. if you talk to daisy with him in your party he flirts with her and if you tell holly from the slog that shes hot when she asks if she looks good you get a [maccready liked that] and hes the only companion to react to the conversation, even hancock doesnt care how you respond. this is such a funny part of his character why do people sleep on this

he was born july 4, 2231 [ im p sure this is like 10 years before fo2 takes place. lawrence is about 56 by the time fo4 takes place. im bad at math ] to holly and cal fields. his full name is lawrence karlotte fields.

hes an ex-institute scientist who worked in the SRB. he was kind of a nervous wreck all the time and once he left he was scared the institute would find him in the commonwealth so he leaves for the mojave. his timeline takes place on a timeline where house wins.

lawrence was in charge of watching over even synths still in the institute and as a result ‘adopted’ A5-50 and G4-18. A5-50 by the time lawrence left in 2267 he was almost in his 50s. A5 and G4 were upset when he left because he didnt treat them like they were old or broken [ both of them were assembled before lawrence was even born ]

he makes it to the mojave eventually and spends most of his time in the strip. the end of fnv passes and the courier who doesnt get a name bc they arent important to his story leaves and never returns. house is like “huh i kinda like this weird man who walks around the strip as if hes gonna be gunned down every time he blinks” and invites him into the lucky 38 and the two get along really well

i havent rly decided how this part plays out EXACTLY but lawrence eventually gets house’s conscious into a gen 3 synth body that looks like his before the war happened. they dont ever get in a relationship but they ARE very good friends and enjoy each others company

well, a lot of people’s suggestions were either sensible or considering cougars and milfs to be the same thing. now of course they can overlap ! but truthfully i think a lot more cougars exist in fallout, than milfs. So my personal list is short probably

1. The Lone Wanderer’s mom. Now you may ask, I didn’t consider Nora one, why Catherine. Well, I’d rather list NPCs than player characters. Also James is a dilf, so inherently Catherine is a milf.

2. The Village Elder of Arroyo. Same deal, I just think player character’s parents if included are automatic milf/dilf territory.

3. Rose from FO2. It’s never listed that she has children, though her great niece in FNV gives me enough leeway. Also just her description... “You see a pleasantly plump woman. Her gray hair is done up in a loose bun, and she walks with a slight waddle. You can't help but feel relaxed around her.” ideal milf

4. Tandi. She does have a son, though Tandi in FO2 reaches gilf territory.

5. Kerith from FO2. I have an issue with listing creatures as milfs. I am not a monster fucker. But she talks, and I find the intelligent deathclaws to be very endearing.

6. Ostensibly, Holly from the Family can be a milf. Found family of vampires milf...

7. Leaf Mother Laurel is a milf, and the type that you find at a organic farmer’s market
