Grammar time
This was my mams when she was in school and she gave it to me. It has everything from how to congugate regular verbs and every irregular verb, how to put things into questions, how to reply in the affirmative/the negative, useful question words, prepositions, all of the essentials. It's okay if you don't understand all of it, I didn't at first, but now I love this cheat sheet

the trouble with learning a minority language is that once you've hit the upper-intermediate stage of actually reading books in the language and so on, it doesn't take very long to exhaust the books at your level that you have any interest in whatsoever, and then there aren't any more. so you read the ones you're not really interested in, but that feels like Work, because you're not really interested in them. but it doesn't exactly get better as you get more advanced because even the more difficult books tend not to correspond too closely to your preferred genres

Maidin mhaith!
Decided on a spur this morning / yesterday I was going to make a Tumblr... Aight, fine... Turns out I already have a Tumblr? I just haven't used it once since I created it, I don't know when... Now it's up again, hi... Síocháin daoibh, or peace to everyone :) I don't know what I'm going to be posting here yet, but I hope to make friends. I'm a musician so I might make a second blog for my music ? This was really just for fun, and all other social media now is just so bad...? I missed Tumblr. It's very different than it was when I was a teenager, I haven't used it since I was 14/15 and I'm 22 now. It's nice to be back, and I hope this will become a happy place for me. Maybe I'll make more of an intro post soon, like who I am, interests & hobbies and stuff... Do people do that?? I don't know, I'm so used to Discord now, ahhhhhhhh... Slán!

((Splendidly silly nonsense, but I suddenly recognized in a textbook something familiar about the mysterious stag wild god Athair's name )) An fia mór osnádúrtha ina gcónaí sa choill: "Athair is ainm dom"
na draoithe ó Cúl Tíras: An carria mór osnádúrtha = an t-athair mór osnádúrtha?
The great magical deer living in the woods: "My name is Athair" The Thornspeakers of Kul Tiras: The large magic stag = the large magic dad?

Ceol comhaimseartha as Gaeilge (Contemporary irish language music recommends)
Many foriegners looking more into more music as gaeilge following from Unreal Unearth and have been asked afew times about it. So Im gon give afew recommendations
Seo Linn - Folk/Indie/Soft Rock group formed in Conamara and have a good range of sounds ranging from newer covers of our most popular folk songs (Óró sé do bheatha abhaile , Siúil a Rúin and Mo ghile mear are among the best) and are a good intro point
IMLÉ - More of a collection of artists who bring different sound styles together and topics in their lyrics. Honestly, just take the entireity of the self-titled album as a taster
Róisín Seoighe - A great soloist and someone who transfers aspects of Canadh Sean Nós into a newer format. Alot of her work and songs touch on the state of Gaeilge (Níl mé marbh and Sín do lamh).
Kneecap - One of the more well-known, atleast over here. A rap trio from Belfast/Derry, and alot of their lyrics and flow focuses much more on the specific experience of both millenial life and Gaeilgeoirí and An Ghaeilge in the North, and what its actually like trying to engage with society through our language when half of the the governmental institution has contempt for its existence. CEARTA, one of their singles, has still stayed a sort of aintiún (anthem) for language rights up here in the North. Also, heavy heavy anti-colonialism, mar sin craic Mhaith (see their JOE.ie interview). Otherwise, some of ther best works you might like are Cearta, Bouncers agus Gael-Gigolos
TG Lurgan - A sort of summer school/learning scheme that started out of the Connemara Gaeltacht, meant to help irish learners pick up the more natural flow specifically by learning through music. Nearly all of the music is sung by school kids and leading musicians with the majority being covers of pop songs. So you can find the lyrics online easily, and can be a helpful way for people trying to learn how to deal with the lack of real word-for-word translation ó Ghaeilge go Béarla.
This is just a handful of artists, and the first handful rarely scrape over 2000 streams a month. Modern irish music is still very much a niche in its own way, miserably so even on our island. Theres no shortage of music you can find being made by newer artists though, even if ceol as gaeilge only makes up some of their work
Tá súil agam go bhfaighidh tú roinnt a mbaineann tú taitneamh astu, agus má tá tú ag foghlaim, go gcabhraíonn sé leat

Gearrscannán ar YouTube
Short films on YouTube
(Don't worry, everything has English subtitles in the videos themselves)
Fán https://youtu.be/e3xnvkMp_1Q?si=i-4pmljDbzA8bRtu
Created by the incredible @nibmoss, an absolute queen (Bánríon). It is a short sapphic story about 2 best friends who end up together and it is my favourite short story ever!!! It is also my favourite piece of Irish media in existence!!! I love it!!! It is incredible!!! BEYOND AMAZING!!!
Yu Ming is ainm dom https://youtu.be/JqYtG9BNhfM?si=jnZjP4LozqOhNxkI
This is a classic. Ive had 4 different teachers show me this over the years, and my first year Irish class studied it exam style. It was the first piece that we studied and everyone LOVED it, people were quoting it all the time. Every second conversation had someone using a line from it. It's a crows pleaser and simple to listen to even without the subtitles provided. It also has a great storyline about a man who is fed up with his life in China and learns Irish to move over here, and well (bhuel) , I won't spoil the plot twist for you
Lipservice https://youtu.be/4QP0eEhhTSo?si=1DLvo_ECRhwGI5s8
It's the day of the oral exams and everyone is terrified (bhí imní an domhain ar gach duine), people are rehearsing in the bathrooms and speaking French instead of English, the stuff that half of them come out with is absolutely gas, this one is such a bit of craic, I was in stitches. And the bit at the end is so sweet. Is breá liom an gearrscannán seo agus beidh mé mo scrúdú béil i dhá bhliain 🙈🙈🙈 (I loved this short film and I've my speaking test in 2 years🙈🙈🙈
Filleann ar feall https://youtu.be/Tay7eMxas2k?si=q3ksVJVYJ7E_xxoa
IT'S CILLIAN MURPHY AG CAINT AS GAEILGE!!! You can't beat a bit of Cillian, he's a national treasure. And this is 2000 Cillian, he's so young (this was before I was born) he's in the Gaeltacht for his holidays with a grumpy friend, on a job to sell some Putchín, and he is everyone's favourite sweetgeart, a bit of a himbo, and a respecter of old ladies. Agus deir duine sa sna tuairimí (a person in the comments said that it's like Breaking bad, but with an Irish teacher that instead of a chemistry one (I've never seen Breaking Bad, so I don't know how true that is, but I do know that this was AR FHEABHAS!!!
Rúbaí https://youtu.be/jjYx5v2BUWo?si=tFu1ektBvHNkoQFB
This is a short story about a little girl (cailín beag) who's class is about to make their 1st Holy Communion, but she doesn't believe in God (ní creideann sí i nDia). She's everyone is trying to convince her that god is real and she's just like "nope, read a bit of Darwin, he's great, I'm off to collect worms", even to the priests face and towards the end there's a bitter sweet twist which gives a LOT of background. This was a nice, easy watch, the little girls was so cute, there were a couple of laughs (cúpla gáire) and the vocab was nice and simple
Gaiste https://youtu.be/Xr-V7vg_Y2Q?si=cMMNqPLkmtugbg8t
Very simple vocab, good message, kind of like a fable, big "One of us is Lying" vibes. Nice short film overall
Fíorghael https://youtu.be/t3Kv4fZ2SOE?si=bHibiFJyRUcvZ-TZ
This ones a bit older, but it's still a good bit of craic. You need to wait a couple of minutes to get into it, but the end is brilliant (Caithfidh tú cúpla nóiméad a fanacht chun dul isteach ar, ach tá an chríoch go hiontach)
Sylvia https://youtu.be/fi_4aweOP4w?si=ZCfUAfYaD73IVn8r
There are plot twists, and then there plot backflips, this was the later. This is so weird, but I really enjoyed it at the same time
Ciúnas https://youtu.be/cGfuQ-HeTmk?si=WRPGmo-UNQ0bw9mA
There's not much dialogue, but all of it is very casual, so you still get to pick up a few words that you wouldn't find in a textbook. The storyline is quite sweet, but please be careful watching because it although it centres around her family's love for her, it is set on the way home from the hospital after she tried to end her own life

Ba maith lion grúpa a fháil lán de daoine éireanneach a bhfuil in ann an teanga a labhairt nó a maith leo é a foghlaim mar níl aoine sa saol fíor ag iarraidh ar teanga a labhairt agus nílim beagnach gar de na Gaeltacht. Cá bhfuil na daoine a bhfuil Gaeilge ar eolais agaibh? 😭
Agus níl mé ag rá gur chaithigh siad a bheith go hiontach, mar nílim an maith mé féin, go hairathe sa pointe gramadach agus litriú ach bím ag deaneamh iarracht, ceapaim go bhfuil sé sin an rud is tábhachtach.
