It was impossible for you to score 99 in English. Your best subject was English. You furiously flipped through the pages of your answer sheet, searching in vain for that one mistake.

You snapped your head back to the infront, blush creeping up on your cheeks. After studying day and night for weeks, you were both exhausted. Yet you continued to see graphic scenarios in your head with context to the scenario. The vision persisted in your memory even after you shook your head to ignore it.

You placed his sheet on his side of the table.

"T-there's your paper." You mentally cursed yourself for stuttering. He looked up as he sat up straight. He held his paper with a smile.

Jake walked back up, high-fiving all the girls who spread their hands to feel the touch of Jake's hand. As they felt his hand on theirs, they burst out giggling and squeakling.

You tried your best not to cringe, seeing the girls drool over him. Jake walked up the aisle to your shared seat, he spread his hand for a high-five from you. "Come on. For once just praise me and that I did well." He said giving puppy-eyes.

You tried your best to not let your composure slip, but eventually you found yourself high-fiving Jake.

He smirked. "Even the Min Y/N, high-fived as a sign for surrendering from her first position."

You stood up, slamming the desk, grabbing Jake by the collar.

"I never said that." You growled almost into his face. He lifted his hands in surrender as you left his collar and stormed out of the class.

You had the last three periods of the day with Jake again. You groaned annoyed.

He sure knew how to get on your nerves.

As you finished your classes of other courses, you found out that Jake had scored higher marks than you in 3 subjects out of six. You had scored higher than him in 3.

This lead to your anxiety. Jake was almost there. He almost beat your marks.

You walked up to the classroom. You prepared yourself mentally for tolerating Jake.

You walked the aisle, noticing Jake already seated. He seemed to be busy in his laptop. You quietly walked up to him, as you sat down. You peeked at what he was doing.

He was chatting with Jungwon on Kakao talk. Jungwon messaged him,"Hey! You coming on Hoon's today's party?"

Jake had replied with a "Nah bro."

But Jungwon's next message that popped up caught your attention.

"Katrina is coming."

Jake's composure changed as he replied,"Hmm. I'll see then. ;)"

You didn't notice his condition as thoughts coursed through your brain. Anxiety stirred up within you at the thought of Jake liking someone else. 3 periods passed away with a snap, and soon you found yourself walking towards your home.

"Well what's up?" She asked. You sighed. You started explaining to her about how Jake had scored marks higher than you in three subjects and that you were mainly worried about having a one-sided unrequited love. Ryujin chuckled.

"Don't worry, Min (Y/N)! You are coming with me to Sunghoon's party too!", she declared, catching you off guard.

"Wait, what?!" you stammered, halting in surprise as she laughed at your reaction

"Sunghoon was searching for you to invite you but he couldn't find you so he thought that why not inform me cause I am going and I am your bestfriend too." She explained as you nodded unable to speak.

She playfully shoved you as she said ,"Go home and get dressed. We leave in an hour."

She winked as she walked away towards her house just a street away from yours.

You looked at yourself in the mirror for the last time before grabbing your purse and walking out of your house. Ryujin stood there waiting for you. As her eyes landed on you, she couldn't control admiring you.

She had no idea where she was being held, but she had an upsetting level of certainty about who had brought her here. She'd heard all the rumours about the "Happy Cow Dairy" through the web. Nominally, they were just one of the many industrial dairy mega-farms active in the US, providing milk and cream to the public at reasonable prices. If you believed some of the less charitable opinions about them, they were also huge political donors, able to sway regulations and laws to suit their business interests despite the risks to health and safety.

And if you believed some of the really out-there conspiracies...

Bethany wasn't usually one to believe the sort of nonsensical rambling that gets shared by the paranoid and the delusional on social media, but some of the stories about the Happy Cow Dairy were just plausible enough to make her finish reading any post about them that she saw. Mentions of their links to government bio-tech firms, collusion with intelligence agencies, even some gene-editing companies absorbed under their corporate umbrella. This was all just the icing on the cake though - the real story was the number of abductions that had been blamed on them over the past couple of years. It all would have sounded like the usual crank nonsense, except for one shred of proof that had made its way onto the internet. She would never forget what she saw when she finally got her hands on a link to that video...

Back when she had first moved out to the small, rural town in which she currently lived, Bethany had befriended a waitress called Danielle, who worked at the cafe next to her apartment. They were both out-of-towners who didn't really have any close family, so they naturally gravitated towards each other; Danielle would spend half of her shift loitering at Bethany's table, keeping her coffee topped up and letting her vent about what a rough week she'd had. She got a bad enough feeling about the whole thing to contact the police about it. They got back to her a couple of weeks later - They'd managed to get in touch with her and confirm she was safe, but beyond that, they couldn't give Bethany any details.

She would have relegated the whole ordeal to Danielle just being weirdly skittish... If not for the contents of the video. It supposedly showed one of Happy Cow Dairy's "top-secret" R&D labs, where they develop new hormone formulas for maximising the milk production of their cows.

Except these weren't cows. These were women.

You could be mistaken for thinking they were cows at first glance. Their size and proportions were definitely far from normal. Lined up on either side of a central walkway, dozens of immensely fat women crouched on their hands and knees, all communally eating from two long metal troughs running parallel to each other for as far as the camera showed. Each face looked dazed as it munched on whatever slop was being served, spilling the stuff all over their triple-chins and onto their massive mammaries. Every now and then, a low, guttural moo would escape from one of the captive women, echoing through the vast hall long after the offending cattle had dipped her head back down into the slop.

The smallest of the "cows" had to be at least 700lbs, and the biggest were too big to even fit fully into frame as the camera passed over them each in turn. Their bellies all scraped along the faux-grass floor as they dragged their immense bulks from one section of the trough to another, seeking out more mouthfuls of the apparently delicious slop. Their breasts looked so big and so heavy, sagging low and also touching the ground as they endlessly leaked thin streams of creamy milk; whatever hormone cocktail those scientists had pumped into these poor girls, it was clearly having its intended effect. The video went on for less than a minute, but every frame seemed to last an eternity when Bethany first watched it. It was horrifying... But it was still, at the end of the day, just a video on the internet. It wasn't proof of anything. Sure, Happy Cow Dairy might have a secret lab filled with women who had been halfway transformed into dairy cows. But it was just as likely that somebody with a lot of skill in digital effects had created the whole thing as a hoax, maybe as part of some vendetta against the Dairy for firing them or building a farm over their land. As Bethany had approached the end of the video, she had all but convinced herself that that was the explanation. Just a disgruntled ex-employee, getting back at their old bosses with this wild conspiracy.

She just wished she had closed the video at that point. She could have moved on with her life and laughed at what a gullible fool she had been for digging so deep into all of this nonsense. But she hadn't. She had watched it through to the end. And as the camera panned over the last couple of faces bowing their heads into the half-empty trough, Bethany's heart had skipped a beat.

It was Danielle.

If not for the colour of her hair and the distinctive scar on her eyebrow, Bethany wouldn't have recognised her old friend. Her face was so much rounder and softer, dominated by chubby cheeks and several chins, with a mop of wild, greasy hair framing her once delicate face. She glanced at the camera as it passed over her, not even bothering to pause from sinking her stained mouth into the slop and swallowing a hefty mouthful. She wore no clothes, except for a grey pair of shorts that barely seemed to cover the colossal mountain of ass that now weighed down her rear end. The tag attached to her ear was just legible for a single frame of the video, and Bethany had managed to decipher it.

"DAISY"

Suddenly, Bethany was stirred from her reminiscing by a gentle buzz from the doorway on her left. With a soft click, the door opened to reveal a tall woman wearing a familiar-looking labcoat, and carrying an equally familiar-looking tablet. She wore safety goggles and a facemask, preventing Bethany from seeing what emotions were playing across her face as she stepped into the room and paused in front of the chair that she was constrained to. Was it pity? Curiosity? Excitement? She tried to speak to the scientist, but her words fell on deaf ears - Literally, as the scientist's earplugs prevented her from hearing any more than a gentle hum coming from Bethany's direction. She typed something into the tablet, then walked around to a point behind Bethany that she couldn't see. After some cryptic beeps and buzzing from whatever console was located there, the woman left the room through the same door she had entered by, leaving Bethany alone once again.

Her head sank in defeat as she realised just how bad this was looking. Nobody was going to help her. Whatever these people were going to do to her, she wasn't going to be able to fight it. This was a well-oiled machine, and Bethany's role in it was already decided; anything she could try to do to resist them, they'd probably already thought of and planned for. Her only choice was to hope they made some kind of mistake before they could do her much harm.

As she sat there with her head hanging towards the ground, she noticed something that made her heart sink. The grey outfit she had woken up in...

It was exactly the same shade as the shorts Danielle was wearing in that video.

The console behind her, which had been humming softly since the scientist had left, suddenly came to life, and Bethany could do nothing but watch as a thick rubber tube descended from the ceiling towards her gasping mouth...

This my original main character, Sarala Devi! (Pronounced like Davey)

Pronouns are She/Her, and she’s pansexual but doesn’t explicitly identify as such

Sarala is a 49 year old mother of 2 adult sons (Vincent and Jordan) and grandmother to one adopted grandchild (Riley)

She’s a scientist with passions for biology, dermatology, and chemistry. But also has a knowledge in/tinkers around with robotics.

Her Spider-name is Makadee Naree (Hindi for Spider-Woman), and she has all the usual Spider powers *plus* the ability to shoot webs from her ankles as well as her wrists! She also gained her powers in the typical way, bite from a radioactive spider from the lab she works at. She was the first to be bitten and gained powers, and then the same happened to all three of her children as well, which led them to become San Jose’s one and only Spider-Family!

*please ignore how on some of the drawings she has two small spiders as part of her chest emblem, her design has been changed to drop those so it’s just the black widow spider on her chest*

She and my other characters existed prior to me gaining my interest in Spider-Man, but since I love Spider-Man so much and that love really helped me develop my characters so much further and deeper, I only really focus on the Spider versions of them all.

Her best friends are named Frank DuPont and Meera Tamanna. Meera’s her on and off again high school sweetheart girlfriend, buuuut then one day I accidentally shipped Sarala with Miguel O’Hara and that happened instead lmao

Exclusive Interview with Retro-a-go-go's Doug P'Gosh; Interviewed about EC Comics products!

Chet Reams: Tell us at Crypt of MADness a bit about yourself to start off:

Doug P'Gosh: I’m an artist, illustrator and product designer. My full time job is working with my wife, designing products for Retro-a-go-go! I also design products such as statues and tiki mugs for Tiki Farm, Munktiki, Disney and others. Finally, I try to paint and draw every day and I love creating portraits of classic Hollywood stars and alternative movie posters for films. I’ve had a number of my illustrations licensed and released for Lucasfilm and Warner Brothers. I’m very lucky to live a very full, creative life. And when I’m not working, my wife and I like to travel and haunt antique shows and stores, where I always keep an eye out for old ECs among other things. A couple of years ago I found a nice copy of a vintage Weird Science for $10! Miracles can still happen!

Reams: Fill us in on Retro-A-Go-Go, the business!

P'Gosh: Retro-a-go-go! was started nearly 21 years ago by my wife, Kirsten. At the time, she was feeling pretty burned out by her corporate marketing career. She wanted a new challenge and to work for herself and to build her own business. She took a $100 investment and created a bunch of necklaces at our kitchen table. She utilized my collection of old 1920’s and 30’s film magazines, printing the covers at a miniature size and creating a fun product. She took a table full of the jewelry and some other items she created to a Rockabilly/Car show and quickly sold out of them all. She was off to the races after that. Belt buckles, t-shirts, wallet cases and business card cases, flasks and more all with retro related, fun, humorous images.

I had my own corporate product design job at the time and after about 7 years of my wife growing the business, I left my job and joined her as a full time product designer.

About 8 years ago, we were feeling like the company needed to go in a new direction. We were no longer inspired to create more of the same types of products and then our factory for metal work closed. Around this time, I was developing a new product using vac form plastic to enlarge old Halloween masks from the 1960’s and 70’s into 2 foot tall giant wall decorations. We pretty much poured our last bucks into getting a series of wall décor masks manufactured for us.

The first few days after we introduced our new Horror Décor, the line was met with indifference. Our present customer base just wasn’t looking for what we had created. But by some miracle, Pee Wee Herman saw our designs, blogged about them and his own 1980’s Pee Wee Halloween costume and our sales exploded overnight. Since then, we’ve created thousands of Halloween, Christmas and monster related vac form and other products. We’ve licensed with Universal for the Munsters, Mars Attacks, General Mills Cereal Monsters and more. We’re now a collectibles and décor company that creates products for people that are looking for something different from what you find in every big box department store. The unique, different and unusual- as long as we have a passion for the product, we’ll create it. If we like it, we figure we’ll have customers that like it too. We’re usually right.

Reams: What initially led Retro-A-Go-Go to start producing officially licensed EC Comics merch?

P'Gosh: That was me. I pushed to get the license. I loved the comics since I was a kid and thought there was room for the kind of products that we can create. And I loved the idea of contributing to the EC legacy- if only in a small way.

Reams: Did you read EC Comics (reprints or originals) growing up? If so, what was your initial take-away from them?

P'Gosh: I have thought of this question a lot. It’s a bit fuzzy as to when I first was introduced to EC…or rather the artists I love so much that drew for EC and MAD. My Dad was in his early 20’s in the 1950’s, so I know I remembered him talking about “Tales from the Crypt”. But I think I found my way to EC through MAD. First it was the magazine, then someone gave me “The Brothers MAD”, the paperbook reprint of the early comic book MAD. I think that had the Wonder Woman parody in it and I couldn’t get enough of Bill Elder’s drawings. I was hooked. And that sent me down the rabbit hole of chasing down the early MAD comic books. First with the stitched in reprints, bound into the MAD Super Specials. Then it was discovering Jack Davis, Wally Wood and the rest of the gang. Then somewhere around that time (this is the late 1970’s/early 80’s and I’m in grade school) I was really into the Warren Magazine re-prints of Will Eisner’s the Spirit. In the back was an ad for the re-print set of EC comics. All of them for one price. Once those came in the mail and I got a taste of the EC line, it really demonstrated how great comics could be, as opposed to the stuff that was in print by the big houses DC and Marvel. The more EC I could find, the better. I loved the horror stuff, but the War and Sci-fi lines were fantastic too. All these years later, I have a stack of EC originals and a shelf full of various reprints, from the Cochran volumes to the recent GIANT Taschen book.

Reams: Fill us in on the EC Ghoul-unatics bust/sculpture of The Old Witch (which is currently up for pre-order on Retro-A-Go-Go)…

P'Gosh: Our first big EC intro was the “Tales from the Crypt” ornament set. Those sold out pretty quickly after we received our shipment, so we knew there is a passionate audience for the product. But I wanted to do more with the Ghoul-unatics. Last year we started a line of 5.5” Creep-tastic statues. They’re affordable, highly detailed mini statues of classic monsters and Halloween related characters. We started with Lagoon Creep, our version of the Creature, and then introduced the Trick or Treat Devil Creep, which is an homage to classic kids' Halloween costumes. I really wanted to introduce the EC mascots in this series, and worked up a number of sketches. I landed on poses and looks that I thought captured the look of the Ghoul-unatic AND the artist that was most famous for each. The Old Witch is closely associated with Graham Ingels, of course. My personal design sensibility with these monsters is to have fun with their looks and proportions, while keeping the essence of each character. As I mentioned, I grew up on MAD and the over-sized head and hands and feet are inspired by all those years of reading the magazine and loving the art and artists that created the work.

Reams: What was the design process for the EC Old Witch piece …

P'Gosh: Once we had drawings we were excited about, we submitted them to the licensee. Happily, they were as excited about the concepts as we were. The next step is to create digital sculpt and when the sculptor saw the drawings and was supper excited to work on the designs, I knew we were onto something great. Once we create a digital sculpt, it’s sent to the factory for creating a sample. I take my drawing and work on a detailed color break and indications as to how we want the finished sample to look. Some weeks later, we see photos of a painted sample, where we then make changes and adjustments. A few weeks after that, a revised sample is shipped to us for photography and promotion.

Reams: I am assuming from the design sketches you shared on the Facebook group “EC Fan-Addict Club” ..; That is, I’m assuming that there are also a Crypt-Keeper, and a Vault-Keeper in the works for this particular line of products?

P'Gosh: Yes, that is the plan. Our hope is to give a 3-4 month lag between introducing the next Ghoul-unatic. We’ll probably start sculpting the next one in a couple of months.

Reams: What about Drusilla, the fourth EC Ghoul-unatic? Will she have an item in this series?

P'Gosh: I hadn’t considered her yet. I’m not sure she would lend her good looks to having her head oversized to match the rest of the mascots… let's say the jury is out on her at the moment.

Reams: Are there any plans .. plans to produce items of the new EC Comics horror hosts for EC/William M. Gaines Agent, Inc? The various new EC comic book titles (that Oni Press has been co-publishing with EC Comics), that is?

P'Gosh: Our present license does not include those characters. The new EC line came along after we had our agreement, so there’s no plan for that at this time. But never say never!

pricing comms is so weird because there are people that would do "more" than me for a given comm type (like painting, rendering, way more colour and texture) but charge half of my price, and people who do "less" than me (no rendering, sketchy lines, etc) that charge double my price.

and that's honestly a good thing that we are all very different, imo

i do wish the people doing more rendering would charge more in the even they are undervaluing their time, and i don't wish the people charging more than me would charge less. but it's just wild to see things that i would personally consider more time-consuming to be easier for others, and they price it accordingly. and likewise many artists have such a distinct style or quality that their work is priced that high even for a "basic" coloured fullbody sketch. because it IS worth that much (because the worth is determined by the artist).

what goes into those prices are the years of practice, research, and dedication to the craft. it's all the accounting, marketing, web development, social media management, equipment, and living costs that need to be met by these prices. regardless of if they are a full-time or part-time artist taking commissions or making YCH's or adoptables or stickers or t-shirt designs.

at the end of the day, i think i understand best the prices which are justified by "i will not [do this task/sell this item] for less than [price]". in a nutshell, what Sarah says here in this video:

I've been holding out answering this, because I've been searching around - but I'd just like to say:

RP your canon events, and RP in other spidersonas' events, with your sona getting to jump into cool new universes

RP as canon characters (if you want), or roleplay with them! Make friendships with your favorite characters. (I'd be down to rp Hobie or Gwen or either of the Miles)

RP going to the Spider-Band shows - complete with backstage passes and afterparties thrown by Disco-Spider, living in dorms on campus, and other cool things

Join clubs you can tag yourself with in discord - like the Hobie Brown Fanclub, The Welcome Committee, or a Spider-band of your own

Send in stuff to the 'Canon Event Advice Column' channel and get funny advice from other spider people

Take turns babysitting Mayday all around campus (- she can be a handful)

It'd love it to be low-skill and accessible. Replies would NOT need to be fancy and you wouldn't need fancy art or anything. Prompts would be simple as well. Something like (in this case Lyla could be me or you if you have an idea and wanna start one)

Or and even simpler prompt could be like

** Weekly Prompt!! ** It's Saturday night and the Spider-band has just finished their 8pm show! The night is young and Disco-Spider is down to boogie. She's having an afterparty with the Spider-crew over in Mumbattan. Wanna come?

Replies and jumping in can be as simple or complex as you want, and there's no permissioned need or anything - just go with the flow, even in battle (if you wanna rp that - no biggie if you just wanna hang on campus).

Responding to a prompt could be like

RPer1: [Spider-Jane] Mary-Jane Watson of Earth-42069 has arrived in Mumbattan! She's wearing a tie dye t-shirt and jean shorts. Her curly red hair in a ponytail. She heard about the party from Margo [ or some made up scenario you want] and wanted to come.

And a reply could be

Disco-Spider: [Disco-Spider] Diane is hanging outside the warehouse in Mumbattan, out of uniform and wearing a sparkly blue dress. Her eyes light up when she sees Jane's portal open in front of her. "Hey, Jane! I heard you were coming! What's up? How'd your last mission go?"

and it can go from there or whatever it doesn't have to be fancy at all. These are just examples , honestly just me rambling.

IDK if that's basic but I'd love it to be basic and open to beginners. Because someone invited me into a super chill rp years ago and I fell in love with it!! And it can go into deep rp if theres some people more experienced because I'd love to do that too.

I just love ATSV and when I saw it I was like 'omg this has SO much RP potential and with so many spidersonas yoooooooo' Like Spider Society seems so interesting that even a fic can't even do it just yknow what I mean like i wanna hang out in the food court and spar with other spidersonas in the training rooms or talk about canon events in support groups or see other universes or whatever

But I have NO idea if enough people would be into this or if anyone would be. Or how to work discord. But I'd be willing to go all in if some people (like even 4 or 10 is enough) and make it like a super cool chill community of developed spidersonas and stuff

maybe its a pipedream but I figured I'd put it out there

I decided to test the new version of Stable Diffusion, called Flux. The prompt is at least similar to what I tested SDXL 1.0 with, a hippie girl wearing a t-shirt with the words "Everything Will Be Alright".

Well, shit. The thing is an absolute fucking behemoth, with a 11 GB data model and 5 GB dictionary, so it put my 8 GB video card and brand new 32 GB of DDR5 system RAM through a wringer. Rendering just one picture took about forty minutes when, for comparison, both SD 1.5 and SDXL need about a minute and a half. But it does replicate text fairly well, with minor typos if any and solid legibility. I also tried a web-based setup on the developers' site that's incomparably faster but still making typos (for example, I got a period-accurate white t-shirt with the phrase set in Cooper Black typeface, but it said "everything will be arright").

Also, from what I'm seeing, Flux not only messed up the number of fingers only once in a lot of pictures generated by multiple people, but can also, finally, draw guns correctly, something that annoyed me in Stable Diffusion for a long time. However, it's not that good at replicating art, being aggressively photorealistic no matter the prompt - I tried to ask the web-based setup for a replica of Rembrandt's style, something that the previous models did fairly well, got jack shit.

Also, a curious thing: I tried the Glurb prompt, a streak of random nonsense that returned goblins in every previous version of Stable Diffusion no matter the specific model, and the web-based setup returned something much closer to people's attempts in Midjourney instead - meaning that the entire thing was rewritten from scratch and not based on any previous version.

If you're an Anonymous who wrote me an ask about Bad Buddy's episode 7, and you noted that you liked the un-formulaic way in which Pat and Pran reconciled their relationship, and asked for recommendations for dramas to watch *before* Bad Buddy, ones that might reflect on that un-formulaic quality that you liked so much: I apologize for the delay in responding.

I had a great answer that I had all written up, that the web editor ate. :'( The web editor LOVES to eat asks in drafts. Lame.

So here's my best attempt to recreate that answer!

Non, thanks for the ask! Ha.

Okay, so, Bad Buddy's episode 7, the competition-in-love episode. What is so great about this episode is that the boys are equals in their competition to get each other to confess first. They're both so clearly sweating for each other, they are totally aware of it, and yet they're still committed to the bit until the very end, when Pat confesses that he'll always throw the game for his lover.

Non, in your original ask, you noted that this set-up went against the formula of how couples usually reconcile their attractions to each other to confirm a relationship. You then asked for recommendations for dramas that a beginner should watch before Bad Buddy, so with that, I assume you mean that you'd like recommendations of Thai BLs. I'm going to interpret your ask from here on out as an ask that reflects on your appreciation for how we got to the setup that was episode 7 of BBS. I can help with this, but I'll also call in some experts at the end to ponder this!

I so appreciate that your ask focused specifically on Bad Buddy, because: my watching and appreciating BBS was a major reason why I myself wanted to learn about the early development of the Thai BL genre. Bad Buddy upends a ton of tropes that had been established in early Thai BL dramas -- I wanted to gain a better appreciation for what BBS was doing, so I hit the archives in my Old GMMTV Challenge project.

As I review the OGMMTVC syllabus for thoughts on recommendations, I'm reflecting on dramas that relied heavily on certain tropes that established the exact formula that BBS/episode 7 spins around. To me, namely, that's the pursuer/pursuee structure, better known as the seme/uke structure.

Pran and Pat are equals in episode 7 -- they're both chasing each other. Earlier Thai BLs almost always featured a seme who pursued an unknowing uke, and very commonly, that uke would have a queer revelation to realize that they were falling in love with their seme pursuer. (In BBS, Pat indeed has a revelation -- but he's not being pursued at that moment. He just realizes that he's fallen in love. By episode 7, both boys are the pursuers of each other.)

So in thinking about earlier Thai BLs that a beginner could watch, to learn about and appreciate the seme/uke tropes that established the formulas that BBS upended, I've got the following.

SOTUS/SOTUS S/Our Skyy x SOTUS: By now, in 2023/2024, SOTUS is.... gently offensive? But for historical purposes, AND for Bad Buddy-purposes, I think it's a must-watch. SOTUS walked so Bad Buddy could run. It was the first BL by GMMTV, a huge one, and gave birth to the first huge celebrity ship in KristSingto. Singto's Kongpob pursues a hesitant Arthit (Krist), who has a revelation that he's fallen for Kong by the end of the series. SOTUS S and Our Skyy x SOTUS follow their eventual relationship.

VERY IMPORTANTLY! Bad Buddy does a LOT to upend a LOT of what SOTUS put out there, by way of commentary on bullying, on the "gay-for-you" phenomenon -- BBS even featured an actor from SOTUS S who played the father of one of the main characters (Kongpob), and put that dude in the same shirt he wore in SOTUS S!

But for the sake of the seme/uke tropes we're talking about, SOTUS has this in spades. There's problematic hubby/wifey language in SOTUS that's, again, upended in Bad Buddy. But SOTUS is a product of its 2016-time period. The genre has learned a lot by way of revising problematic elements that came with the genre's origins. Whenever I think of SOTUS, I always get a sense of nostalgia for Arthit and Kongpob, because SOTUS gave birth to a LOT of tropes (engineering, beach trips, etc.) that we still see in Thai BLs today, tropes that often give structure and reference to dramas. I like that Bad Buddy honored these tropes while also gently calling them out -- and I think, Non, that if you get your historical knowledge squared away just through the SOTUS franchise, you'll appreciate that BBS/episode 7 that much more.

Love By Chance: LBC aired two years after the original SOTUS came out. Trope-wise, overall, I call LBC an ultimately derivative structured drama, in that it encapsulates really well a lot of the tropes that had been established in Thai BL in years prior. Non, I recommend LBC for its seme/uke pairing in AePete, as the pairing was a classic pursuit, but Pete happened to be out and gay, and had a fear that Ae would face discrimination for being open in his love for Pete. I loved that the show addressed this head-on. The rest of the show is not nearly as up to par as what PerthSaint delivered in their AePete performance, but LBC is well worth watching to see the tropes in high action.

Until We Meet Again: While I am a slavish LOVER of UWMA, this drama has a classic seme/uke pairing in Dean and Pharm, but -- the show allows Pharm as a blushing maiden uke to actually have agency and space for his sexual preferences. The show depicts Pharm in hesitation mode, often, but also allows for Pharm to have open and equal communication with Dean about when Pharm is ready to take things to a next level, without a seme pushing an envelope to move things more quickly than they should.

I Told Sunset About You and I Promised You The Moon: Instead of driving to a classic seme/uke set-up, ITSAY spent much more time in Teh's revelatory and recognition headspace, as he negotiated internally his attraction to Oh-aew. IPYTM allowed us to see into Teh's and Oh's eventual relationship, and established Oh-aew's supremacy as a man in control of his world and his decisions, always fully aware of Teh's attraction to him, but needing time and space to be ready for Teh's chaos. I love thinking about ITSAY and IPYTM as trope-deflectors before the rise of Bad Buddy, and -- there are multiple moments when Bad Buddy talks to ITSAY as well.

All of these dramas are considered classics and are thus on the OGMMTVC, but Non, I am in no way a comprehensive expert on the genre itself. There are elders all around who have watched more than me! I'm wondering if -- for the question of what dramas best established the seme/uke pursuit trope in Thai BLs before Bad Buddy upended that trope -- if @bengiyo, @so-much-yet-to-learn, @absolutebl, and @lurkingshan have thoughts and suggestions.

Nanoha (Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha) I was 18 at the time and this character and series would touch my heart forever and reminded me how sometimes it's not about saving the world, it's about saving one life. Her magical staff, Raising Heart, lives with me in my profile picture.

Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog) My 7th birthday was Sonic themed. And I was 14 when I played Sonic Adventure 2 (perfect timing). The blue guy who showed me you can be cool and a hero. He's lived in my internet handle since I was 12 and signing up on the GameFAQs forums.

Optimus Prime (Transformers) I was a little kid, growing up on reruns of Transformers G1/G2. In those days, Optimus was like a second father to me (and like a first father to many). A role model from the start who taught how to 'be strong enough to be gentle'. He's also lived in my internet handle since the days of dial up.

That's the big top three out of the way. The rest is all gravy.

4. Kirby That happy, pink little guy with more power than the elder gods who just wants to eat cake and have a good time. I have Kirby on my t-shirt right now actually.

5. Asuka and Homura (Senran Kagura) Ninja girls from rival schools that would develop a powerful bond and friendship. This series, which sadly will never see the final game it deserved, was some of the most exciting and happy gaming times I had in that era. Just when I thought we couldn't have pretty girls in gaming anymore, SK delivered.

6. Strong Bad (HomestarRunner.com) The original king of the Flash cartoon era of the old web. I've kept up with this masked wrestle man ever since the 10th grade. The whole cast on that website makes for a good time.

7. Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool, Detective Pikachu, & others) The man who got me excited to watch movies again. And yes, Ryan himself is basically a living cartoon so he counts.

8. The Doctor (Doctor Who, specifically the 10th Doctor played by David Tennant) I watched the first 5-6 seasons of the 2005 reboot. This show, and specifically David's Doctor, was there to see me through a lonely time in my life.

9. Zelda (The Legend of Zelda BotW/TotK) This version of Zelda was one that really got me feeling in a video game again. 10/10 would rescue again.

10. The Lord of the Rings Just all of it.

Tattoos

Story: Six of Powers

Genre: General

Characters: Mari, Jun, Trisha

A short I wrote to get a feel for Mari, Jun, and Trisha's personalities. Also because tattoos are cool.

"Huh?" Mari was staring, but she honestly couldn't be blamed for it. Because, with what she knew, what she was seeing didn't make sense.

The day was warm, a late season heatwave that was just warm enough for t-shirts and jeans and no jackets. Seeing as Mari had moved to City in September, right when it was starting to cool off, she hadn't really seen Jun in t-shirts. At least, not ones as tight as the v-neck he had on, whose sleeves reached just barely to the middle of his bicep. The middle of his bicep where half of a black scaly tail peeked out.

Now, Mari didn't have much if any memories of their time at the Facility, but she had learned fairly quickly that Jun was virtually invulnerable. He had purposely ruined a steak knife to show her how only her claws and teeth could break his skin. So she was aware that things like needles should shatter if pressed too strongly.

And yet, that could only be a tattoo on his bicep, unless it was one of those fancy temporary tattoos that lasted like a week.

"Stare any harder and he might just combust," Trisha drawled, examining her freshly done manicure.

Mari whipped her head around. She opened her mouth, unsure what she was going to say, when a lower voice cut her off.

"Trisha," Jun scolded, but there was a slight twitch to his lips when Mari looked back at him. It made her stomach flutter.

"I'm only worried that maybe our dear Mari developed heat ray vision or something," Trisha huffed, but it poorly disguised her own little smirk. "Not that I don't think you don't mind the attention, Junie."

"Shut up." Jun rolled his eyes, but he no longer met Mari's gaze.

Something in her chest didn't like that. Which Mari refused to examine at this very moment because she would then get distracted and upset that she couldn't remember whatever it was that made her hate when Jun wasn't paying attention to her. She also refused to acknowledge there might just be a simpler reason for that. There were more important matters at hand.

Mari cleared her throat.

"If I may ask," she began, ignoring Trisha's "No" and Jun's "Anything", "do you have a tattoo?"

Jun blinked before he turned to show his left shoulder. Rolling up his sleeve revealed the rest of said tattoo: a black snake that wrapped twice around his bicep with its head resting just under the ball of his joint.

Her wild was dismayed that it wasn't a dragon.

"I got it back when I was twenty-three," he explained and left the sleeve rolled up. Like an invitation to touch it. Which Mari resisted despite her desires.

"We got them together," Trisha added.

"You have one too?"

"Mm, on my back." She sipped her drink. "And I'm not wearing the right top to show you."

"It's a spider web, between her shoulder blades," Jun explained when Trisha made no move to say more.

"Ah, I see," Mari murmured, not fully understanding the meaning behind either tattoo. It wasn't like Jun was born in the Year of the Snake or Trisha was a black widow or anything. But that wasn't actually her question. "...how, though?"

"With a needle." Trisha's tone alone said the unspoken "duh".

Mari gave her her most unimpressed look. "I'm an amnesiac, not dumb, Patricia. I mean, how did Jun get a tattoo?"

Trisha immediately looked a little guilty. Her mouth twisted.

"Ah, it was...a special needle," Jun reluctantly said. He was staring at Mari with a mildly grim look on his face. "...back in the Facility when the scientists found out your claws could cut me, they took a sample of the chemical makeup to replicate for tools that could work on me. They really only managed to make needles, but the data was still in the hard drives."

"Since my father's company scavenged all the data they could, Company got those files so we could fabricate more," Trisha continued. "Once I took over, we did it to make, well, a tattooing needle and a piercing gun tip."

Mari had covered her mouth and gave them a long look.

On one hand, she hated that the Facility had had files on something that could bring Jun harm. More than just needles, if he had ever rebelled before the six of them had, the Facility could have made weapons to kill him. And Trisha kept those files instead of deleting them. On the other hand, she hadn't done anything besides make essentially nonlethal equipment, which allowed Jun experiences that someone without his invulnerability could have. It was honestly very sweet of her.

"Your ears are pierced? I thought they were clip-ons," Mari remarked with a growing smile. "I will admit, that wasn't exactly what I expected."

"You're not...upset?" Jun asked as he ventured closer.

"Well, there's not much I can do about it," she said. "Besides, if it helped you feel normal, I can't really fault either of you."

He blew out a deep sigh. "I thought you'd be angry."

"Like I said, there isn't anything I can do about it," she insisted. "As long as there hasn't been anything made that can hurt you."

"No, any blueprints other than needles i got rid of," Trisha declared. Her eyes flashed. "I'm not going to let anyone hurt us again."

"Then there isn't any reason for me to be angry," Mari said. She smiled up at Jun and privately marveled at the surprise on his face. "I'm a little disappointed it's not a dragon, though."

He huffed a laugh.

"I thought that might be a bit on the nose," he remarked, leaning closer to her. "Y'know, being second gen and all."

"Mm, yes. You have a point," she agreed. "And the snake is...?"

A shadow fell over his smile, the warm amusement turned cold. He didn't move, but the spark had gone from his eyes.

"Thought it was cool," he answered finally.

Mari thought it sounded like a lie.
