Plus-One // Lewis Hamilton
Tumblr media
You stared at the envelope laying mockingly on the counter in front of you. You couldn’t believe it! Your cheating ex-boyfriend actually had the gall to invite you to his wedding … to the woman he cheated on you with.
Having moved on with your life, you could safely say that you did not miss him at all. That didn’t stop you from still being pissed at the way he disrespected you and the way that the so-called friends you shared blindly sided with him in the aftermath.
He made you feel worthless, placing the blame on you for being too plain and too frigid. And you actually believed him for a while. Until you met the man who spent every day since he first laid eyes on you proving just how priceless you really are.
Technically, it’s more accurate to say that your Cocker Spaniel met Roscoe while both dogs were being taken for a walk and it was love at first sight for them. Laughing at how your dogs hit it off, Roscoe’s owner introduced himself and invited you to join them for lunch at a local dog-friendly vegan cafe.
That’s how, two years later, you found yourself traveling the world with two dogs and one Sir Lewis Hamilton. The F1 season meant that you spent a good portion of the year away from home and so it was only during summer shutdown that you finally had time to go back to the Monaco condo that you shared with your boyfriend and look through the giant pile of accumulated mail. Hidden in the middle of the mess of letters was an unassuming envelope postmarked from your parents a few months ago. Opening it revealed the envelope you were currently staring at.
The wedding invitation was originally sent to your parents’ house three months ago (which made sense as your ex-boyfriend had no way of knowing where you currently lived). You were willing to bet that he had no idea just how far you’d come since you found him in bed with another woman and unless he was a frequent subscriber to F1 WAG update pages, he likely had no idea who you were dating. Evidently, he invited you to his wedding just to rub it in your face.
Lewis walked into the kitchen to find you sitting at the island trying to burn the invitation with your mind, “What’s wrong, love?”
“Remember when I told you about my douche of an ex?”
“The idiot who cheated on you?”
“Yes,” you raged at his audacity. “Apparently he invited me to his wedding to the same woman he was cheating with.”
“Okay,” Lewis took the invitation from you and read it over, ever the rational one when off the grid. “Here’s what you’re going to do: you’re going to RSVP and check off that you’re bringing a plus-one with you.”
“But-“
“No buts. It will be after the end of the season. We’re going to pull up and show him just how much better off you are without him. We’re going to make him regret ever hurting you like that.”
You stood up and kissed him in thanks, “I couldn’t have asked for a better boyfriend.”
His eyes raked over your form, even exhausted after a long plane ride back to Monaco, he still made you feel like the most beautiful woman on earth, “You’ve already upstaged the bride and you’re not even trying.”
Fast-forward to a week before Christmas, one month after Lewis won his eighth world championship title, and you were making the finishing touches to your makeup in a hotel suite near the wedding venue.
“Lew,” you called over your shoulder, “can you please come help me zip up my dress?”
He came up behind you and ran his hands over your back, pulling up your zipper and sending chills throughout your body.
“Gorgeous,” he kissed behind your ear. “Exquisite,” he turned you around and kiss along your jawline.
You met his lips, “I love you. Thank you for everything.”
“And I love you. Every man at the wedding is going to be jealous that I get to have you on my arm tonight.”
The wedding was an experience from the moment you pulled up to the valet and the teenager who ran up to collect your car caught sight of Lewis. He drove to park your Mercedes with shaking hands and a fresh Lewis Hamilton autograph across his company branded cap.
It was a little bizarre when most of the guests were more focused on your boyfriend than the groom at the altar or the bride making her way down the aisle, but the two of you resolved to gracefully sit together, the picture of quiet elegance. Luckily, you sat far enough back at the ceremony to escape your ex-boyfriend’s notice which will make the moment he finally sees you all that much sweeter.
You zoned out while the officiant droned on and on, focusing on Lewis tracing little shapes along your thigh, only snapping back to attention at “you may now kiss the bride.”
The two of you joined the rest of the guests as they filed out of the ceremony space and into the ballroom for the reception, once again the subject of stares as they tried to figure out whether your boyfriend was who they thought he was, and made your way to your assigned table.
You sighed as you realized that you were going to be surrounded by the “friends” who blamed you for the break up and made excuses for why your ex cheated. You whispered as much in Lewis’ ear.
He pulled you closer, “it’ll be fine, love. I’m here with you.”
As the table filled up, it seemed like the rest of the occupants were too preoccupied with your boyfriend to actually realize that he was seated next to you. But you were feeling particularly petty.
“Hello,” you inclined your head with a slight smirk. “It’s nice to you see again.”
They did a double take.
Amy, who you once thought was your best friend, stuttered out a broken, “Y/N?”
“Hi, Amy! How’s it going since you told me that it was understandable that he cheated because I ‘never put out!’”
She didn’t reply, eyes jumping between you and Lewis.
“Oh, this is my boyfriend, Lewis.”
He gave a curt “hello” and raised your entwined hands to his lips.
James, another one of the friends who once betrayed you called out from the other end of the table, “You and LEWIS HAMILTON?”
“Yes, that is my boyfriend’s name last time I checked.”
James continued to run his mouth, “never took you for a gold-digger but I can’t say I’m surprised.”
Lewis interjected before you could even say anything, “Y/N is the most amazing woman I’ve ever met. If anyone’s punching above their weight, it’s me. She’s the one who’s out of my league. It’s not her fault the lot of you were too stupid to appreciate her.”
Amy’s boyfriend, who must be new because they weren’t together when you last saw her, tried to ask for an autograph as the table fell into tense silence but Lewis wasn’t having it.
You really loved your boyfriend.
Later that night after the first dance, Lewis went up to the bar to get you some drinks, first making sure that you would be fine alone for a few minutes.
Someone must have it out for you because that’s also when the newlyweds decided to start making their rounds and when your ex finally noticed you.
“Y/N! You actually showed up. Didn’t think you had it in you to watch us get married,” he sneered. “But it looks like your plus-one bailed on you.”
A glass of champagne was placed by your plate before familiar arms wrapped around you from your back, the smell of Lewis’ cologne instantly comforting you. “Her plus one’s right here.”
You could’ve sworn your ex looked less shocked when you walked in on him that faithful day. “But-but you’re Lewis Hamilton?”
You decided to join in on the fun, “really? I had noooo idea.” You turned to face your boyfriend, “why didn’t you tell me that you’re Lewis Hamilton?”
You turned back towards your ex, “and by the way, the next time you have to send me something, you can mail it to our penthouse in New York or our villa in London or our condo in Monaco or our apartment in Nyon.”
You reached for Lewis’ hand as an upbeat song came on, not letting your ex get in a word edgewise, “come on Lew, let’s dance.”
As Lewis led you to the dance floor, you couldn’t help but be thankful for your ex because if he wasn’t such a moron you probably would have never met the love of your life.

The green-eyed monster
Warnings: the green eyed monster, of course! Implied smut and a couple of swear words. Oh! And me attempting to put in song references.
Jake Gyllenhaal x Fem!reader
I hope you enjoy it!
Tumblr media
Jealousy, also referred to by many as the green-eyed monster, is the act of feeling or showing a resentful suspicion that one's partner is attracted to or involved with someone else.
You had never really been the jealous type. Never. However, something about this situation was very different. Could it be because this was not an event you were familiar with? Could it be because the lady affectionately laughing while placing her hand on your boyfriend’s chest, was capable of buying most of your possessions, if not all of them, with half of her paycheck? Or could it be because your insecurities about how you looked, despite being told you looked gorgeous by your boyfriend, suddenly decided to make themselves known?
Whatever the reason was, you were jealous. And that was that.
Now the question is, how did you get here in the first place?
“Don’t fret. You look gorgeous, honey! “ you boyfriend exclaimed, finally exhausted by the number of questions you asked about how you looked, while you were having a mini freak out in front of the full body length mirror in your shared bedroom. Jake genuinely thought you looked amazing in anything you wore and it irks him whenever you don’t acknowledge that as well.
Noticing the hint of expiration in his tone, you apologized.
“I’m sorry. I just...” you paused, sighing, as you tried to find the right words. “I just don’t want to let you down. There are going to be a lot of extremely beautiful women there and I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb. Especially since this is going to be the first event we’re going to together.”
With a light chuckle, Jake pressed his lips to your forehead.
“You worry too much. You look wonderful and I don’t care about all the other women because you are the only beautiful woman I’ll see.” He said, cupping your face his big hands and stroking your cheeks with his thumbs.
You smiled and tried your best not to cry because of how sweet Jake was being. You weren’t ready to mess up your make up because it was time consuming and quite expensive.
“I love you.” You finally uttered after a moment of silence, consisting of you two staring into each other’s eyes.
“I love you too, baby. Now come on. We’re gonna be late.” Jake murmured before taking your hand and tugging you out of the room and out of your shared apartment towards the rented car that was waiting for you outside.
Half an hour later, you both found yourself in the midst of many well-known actors, directors and producers. Jake pulled you along as he greeted the people he recognized and introduced you to them, if they hadn’t met you already.
“Hubby!” you heard a familiar voice call out, over the loud party music that was playing. You knew that voice quite well. Maybe too well.
Tom Holland that proud owner of the voice, accompanied by Zendaya, made his way to you and Jake.
“Well, well, well isn’t it my prodigal husband.” Jake joked as he embraced to in a side hug. Meanwhile you and Zendaya, who has become close friends the moment you met each other some time ago, smothered each other with kisses as you giggled in unison.
The four of you spent the next hour cracking jokes, while catching up with each other’s lives. That was until you were interrupted
“Jacob,” a feminine voice purred “I haven’t seen you in forever!”
All the attention moved to where the voice came from.
“Joey! Hi! It has been a while.” Jake responded, hugging her.
Zendaya looked at you with a raised eyebrow as ‘Jo’, as Jake affectionately called her started conversing with him.
You shrugged in response, answering her silent question. You had no idea who this newcomer was.
“Oh how could I forget?! Tom, Z, Y/N, this is Jolene, an old friend.” Jake introduced.
Jolene? How fitting. You suddenly felt Dolly Parton’s pain when she sang her song with the same title as this lady’s name.
Jolene giggled. “Old friend? Is that what you call all your exes now?”
“You knew what I meant, Jo.” Jake rolled his eyes playfully.
She let out more giggles.
You opened your mouth to say ‘hi’ but you were interrupted by Jolene talking again.
“Oh my god, Jacob! You absolutely have to meet someone.” She pulled Jake away from your group and towards whoever she wanted him to meet.
You blinked rapidly, trying to process what just happened.
“That was…interesting.” Tom deadpanned, earning an elbow to the ribs from Z. “Hey!” he protested rubbing the spot he was hit.
You raised your head, looking up at the ceiling. “Y/N, what are you doing?” Z asked in confusion.
“I wanna cry but my foundation cost me thirty-five dollars.” You muttered, trying to blink away the tears that were forming.
Not today, Satan, not today.
Tom’s snort quickly morphed into another exclamation of pain when he got elbowed at the same spot again by the same person.
“Aww hun, you don’t need to cry. It’s not worth it?” Z asked rubbing your back soothingly.
“His ex does seem kinda bossy, to be honest.”
Z gasped, “Thomas Stanley Holland, the next time you do something that will make the situation worse, I. Will. End. You.”
“It’s alright, Z” you sighed, as you fished through your purse to find anything to help you with keeping the tears as bay, “He’s right.”
“I think I’m going to talk to him.” Tom said, leaving before any of you could react.
Z turned to you “Y/N-“
“No, no.” you butted in “It’s okay! I’m okay! I’m just going to head home.”
Oh boy, were you lying.
Who were you kidding? She was beautiful! All Jake’s exes probably were the same. What did he see in you anyway? Why did you decide to come here at all? Ugh! Jolene, please don’t take my man.
Finally, bringing your head down to its original position, you dubbed your eyes gently and put your brave face on and made your way to the exit.
You were not going to cry here. You were not going to cry here. You were not going to cry-
“Y/N!” You heard you boyfriend’s voice shout from afar.
You stood still, taking a deep breath.
You can do this Y/N. Elsa was able to do it. Don’t forget. Conceal, don’t feel. Don’t let him know.
“Y/N.” you heard him again, only closer this time.
You opened your eyes and there he stood, right in front of you, in all his handsome glory.
“Where are you going, love?” Jake asked with a slight tilt of his head.
“You seemed very much occupied with that Jolene of yours so I decided to head home.”
Jake raised an eyebrow.
And now he knows. Fuck.
“Really? That sounds like-“
“Yes, Jacob. I am jealous because she’s extremely pretty and you are probably still attracted to her.”
Let it goooo, let it goooo. Can’t hold it back anymore. Damn, you feel so much like Elsa right now. Why on earth were you thinking about Frozen anyway?!
“Babe!” he laughed, stunned at your revelation. “What did I tell you before we left the apartment?”
You sighed.
“I know it’s just… I don’t feel like I’m enough for you sometimes and coming here just makes me feel like I’m not enough for you all the time.”
Jake shook his head, sighing, and pulled out his phone without a word.
“What are you doing?” you asked, curious.
“I’m getting us an Uber.”
“Why?”
“It looks like someone has to have all her insecurities fucked out of her.”
You blanched and looked around.
“Jacob!” you whisper-yelled between clenched teeth looking around to check if anyone had heard what he said.
He placed a hand on each of your shoulders. “I love you so, so, so much. Please don’t let anyone including yourself make you think otherwise. You won my heart fair and square and you own it, baby. Besides, Jolene is married anyway. ”
“What?! Really?”
“Yeah. “He chuckled.
“She took me to meet her wife. Honestly, it was quite boring. I felt like I was third wheeling. I’m glad Tom saved me.”
“I’m sorry.” You pouted.
“It’s alright, babe.” He said offering his hand which you took “Come on, let’s get of here.”
 ……………………………………………………………………………………………
Bonus
“So…your inner green-monster came out, huh.” Your boyfriend whispered as you two cuddled in bed, in your pajamas.
“Jacob, it is 2 am .Why are you thinking about THAT at 2 am?”
Author’s note: I really don't know what to feel about this. I loved writing it, though! I would love to hear from you! What do you think about it?

Adoration to Ashes, Dust to Just — Thoughts on: Alibi in Ashes (ASH)
Previous Metas: SCK/SCK2, STFD, MHM, TRT, FIN, SSH, DOG, CAR, DDI, SHA, CUR, CLK, TRN, DAN, CRE, ICE, CRY, VEN, HAU, RAN, WAC, TOT, SAW, CAP
Hello and welcome to a Nancy Drew meta series! 30 metas, 30 Nancy Drew Games that I’m comfortable with doing meta about. Hot takes, cold takes, and just Takes will abound, but one thing’s for sure: they’ll all be longer than I mean them to be.
Each meta will have different distinct sections: an Introduction, an exploration of the Title, an explanation of the Mystery, a run-through of the Suspects. Then, I’ll tackle some of my favorite and least favorite things about the game, and finish it off with ideas on how to improve it.
If any game requires an extra section or two, they’ll be listed in the paragraphs above, along with my list of previous metas.
These metas are not spoiler free, though I’ll list any games/media that they might spoil here: ASH; mention of a whole host of previous games with the Hardy Boys in them; mention of SCK; mention of STFD; mention of FIN; mention of DED; small spoilers for SPY; unflattering mention of the Nancy Drew: Girl Detective series; brief mention of erotic-shifter-romance book Bearllionaire.
The Intro:
Welcome to the Nancy Games, lads!
Before we begin, since we’re at the beginning of a new “section” of games, let’s go over exact what the “Nancy Games” entail. Unlike the other games, this section (which runs from ASH through SPY) of games is most concerned with Nancy’s personality, growth, and showing her through a different character foil each game.
These games not only give us a better picture of who Nancy is, but also how she fits (or doesn’t fit) into the world around her and with the people that she meets. Rather than solving the case, these games are made to make Nancy react to things; rather than ‘where is Nancy Drew’ or ‘what case is Nancy Drew tackling’, the preeminent question for ASH and the four games after it is simple: ‘Who Is Nancy Drew?’.
Though only possible because of the nature of the miscellaneous games (WAC, TOT) and the Faerietale Games (SAW, CAP), the Nancy Games have been sorely needed since the series graduated past the first few cases. For a lot of the series, the games weren’t really concerned with the main character of the series, preferring her to be a blank slate that players could superimpose themselves onto…which, as recent media (such as Twilight, and Twilight But With Bondage This Time), isn’t a good basis for a character outside of a dime-store bodice ripper.
But these games aren’t Bearllionaire, they’re detective stories, and detective stories need a strong main detective to carry the story — not to mention the stakes.
That’s where these games come in. Building obviously to the story in SPY, each game explores another facet of Nancy’s personality, and shows what she could become — or could have become, in a few instances — should she let the more negative sides of her personality take over, or if she trusts the wrong kind of people and makes the wrong friends.
How better to illustrate than by showing exactly the kinds of people that Nancy’s friends are? That’s what ASH is primarily concerned about — showing who Nancy is by showing the reactions of people who have known her all her life to a crisis. The only difference between Nancy and her Foil in this game is the fact that Nancy has good people — good friends — fighting for her. It’s how she gets herself out of jail, and how she manages to solve the crime.
And it’s a fun (if a bit clunky) game mechanic as well.
This is why this story can only happen in Nancy’s hometown. Not only is it delightful for fans to see (modern-day, as we saw the old version in CLK) River Heights for the first time and get to explore a bit around the town, but hometowns in media are quite significant when looking at who a character is.
Almost always, a hometown is used as sort of a microcosm for the character, giving us a bit of a cheat sheet into who they are as a person just by showing their environment. Think about it — how many times in cop shows (which are the most blatant offenders by far) are we told that a character is from a small town, and thus they’re intent on proving themselves, probably a ridiculously hard worker (to get out of “that place”), and a bit more innocent than their inner-city colleagues? Or that a character grew up overseas to justify their interest in international crime, establish them as a bit of a wildcard, and handwave them knowing about 16 languages? Or that they grew up “on the streets”, justifying a hidden juvenile record, skills in hand-to-hand combat, and a soft spot for Youths Just Like Them?
(But enough about Criminal Minds. I’d rather focus on something that actually has thought put into it.)
The same thing is happening here in ASH; from River Heights, we can extrapolate that Nancy is well-off, straight-forward, comfortable largely around adults (think about it — ignoring the usual phone characters, we only meet one person around Nancy’s age in RH, and she hates her), and has a drive to be Somewhere Other than her small town.
Another interesting point is that River Heights is chosen as the backdrop for something that has only happened twice in the series, and only once been done well: a personal revenge story against Nancy herself. Sure, RAN attempted it, but RAN’s story is — if you haven’t read that meta, spoilers — hot, flaming garbage, and the personal revenge plotline is bungled to the extreme, resulting in it not putting across that theme very effectively.
ASH is different; from the very beginning, it’s obvious that whoever is doing this is working off of a person grudge against Nancy specifically — and burned down the town hall in order to implicate her, so they’re not playing around. It’s the reason that the culprit search is so focused, which really benefits the games as well. The question isn’t really “who would want to get rid of Town Hall”, it’s “who hates Nancy enough to burn down a building to get her in trouble”. It makes questioning so much more interesting — and very full of mines, which is Great — when it’s the person, rather than the specific crime, that matters.
The last thing I’ll touch on in this introduction is a question that the fandom has posed both seriously and jokingly many times over the last….almost exactly 10 years (10 years!!! I need to lie down my land!!!) since the game first came out: where are the Hardy Boys? Surely, if there was ever a game where they made sense to appear, it would be this one; their friend is in prison and needs the help of practiced investigators — you’d think that even if Carson wouldn’t think of hiring them (which, as desperate as he was, he totally would have), that Nancy would have given them a call, if only to see if ATAC had anything on the suspects.
There are two reasons why the Hardy Boys don’t appear, from a storytelling perspective (ignoring the issue of how much money it would cost to include them or any other technical considerations), no matter how much I would have liked them here, or how much sense it would have been to at least name drop them, if not make them phone friends.
The first is to keep the game centered on River Heights. Everyone in the game — both suspects and allies — is from River Heights and is a part of the town’s makeup. Our suspects reporter, a politician-slash-ice-cream-store-owner, an ex-detective-turned-antiques-dealer, and a college student born and raised in RH. They represent different facets of the town — the media, the political, the business, and the rising generation — and so each represent a part of the town. Nancy’s allies all fall under the “rising generation” — the “Future of the Town”, if you will — or under the justice system category, with Carson. Even the Chief represents another facet — the law — that can both hurt and help Nancy in turn. By keeping all suspects and allies tied to the town, the mystery and the story can focus on exactly what’s going down in River Heights, without any distractions.
The second reason that the Hardy Boys don’t appear is a little less obvious and a little less cut-and-dried plain fact, but I find it compelling enough to mention here: Ned is present. Other than as a foil in CAP (and an oddity in CRE/VEN), the Hardy Boys don’t appear in the games where Ned is present — it tends to be an either/or thing as far as phone characters are concerned. The why of this is, admittedly, conjecture, but I do find it fascinating that the two (three, technically) don’t intersect — and when they do, it’s to compare them.
Also there are not enough fics of the time Nancy sent Ned to hang out with the Hardy Boys like their house was a vacation kennel and Joe broke Ned’s car. Just saying.
Ned represents River Heights, safety, security, constancy, and comfort — the same things that the other River Heights phone friends (Carson, George, Bess, Hannah) do, albeit to a slightly lesser extent. The Hardy Boys, on the other hand, represent excitement, danger, the unknown, new discoveries, and growth — as do, in different extents, the non-River Heights returning phone friends (Hotchkiss, Savannah, Prudence).
Nancy sits squarely in the middle of these two extremes; she’s from River Heights, but she’s not exactly of River Heights, if you get my meaning. As the games have progressed, they’ve shown Nancy moving further and further away from safe, small, friend-related cases to professional jobs with more than a few people actively trying to kill her. For me, that’s the reason we don’t see the Hardy Boys and Ned mostly in the same games; they represent different spheres of Nancy’s life.
And, had competent writer(s) stayed and the games not, well, imploded due to Penny being one of the worst business people I’ve ever encountered, it would have been interesting to see that push-and-pull dynamic being expressed in Nancy’s relationships. As it is…thank Heaven for AO3, am I right?
Now, let’s refocus on ASH in specific, and talk about its composite parts, shall we?
The Title:
Other than being catchy and evocative (and telling us exactly what crime was committed here — that of arson), Alibi in Ashes is also a notable title for its flexibility in meaning. Like CAP, there are so many different connotations for “fire”, and all of them apply neatly to this game.
First, we’re dealing with the literal fire that sends Town Hall up in smoke, and the inciting incident for our mystery (and Nancy’s jail time). Next, we have the word “fire” standing in for “emergency” — as in “where’s the fire” — and there seems to be a new emergency every five minutes in this game — the fire, Nancy’s arrest, Bess breaking the vase, Carson’s absence, etc.
After that, we venture even further down the abstract hole, and dive into the political — whistleblowing, which is often referred to as “setting a/the fire”. This is partially what Nancy does, and is also what Brenda likes to do, no matter the accuracy of the report. Finally, we stay with Brenda for the term “media wildfire” – which is exactly what Nancy’s arrest (due to Brenda’s machinations) causes.
The title in total — “Alibi in Ashes” — also works in a few different senses. Literally speaking, Nancy’s alibi — and the evidence to prove it — is in the ashes of Town Hall, waiting to be discovered. More metaphorically, due to the work of the culprit, Nancy’s alibi (aka her innocence) is in pieces, in ashes — it’s been destroyed. Finally, in a literary sense, Nancy’s situation can be shown in the “ashes” of a past life — in the “wildfire” that destroyed Alexei’s life and career as a detective.
Its acronym being “ASH” is also pretty awesome, not gonna lie.
It’s the multifaceted nature of the title that really gives it its staying power, catchiness aside. Many titles are just as good as ASH’s, but almost none work harder at having so many possible meanings that are all represented in the text of the game itself.
The Mystery:
Sufficiently chastened into spending more time at home (at least for a few days), Nancy comes home in order to spearhead her team (consisting of Ned, Bess, and George) to victory in the River Heights Clues Challenge. This friendly little competition that included No Cheating Whatsoever on the part of Other Teams heats up, however, when a clue leads Nancy to the historic Town Hall — only to have it erupt in flames minutes later. Coughing but still moving, Nancy escapes the inferno…only to be greeted by the suspicious press, declaring her guilty of setting a beloved building on fire.
Things only get worse when Chief McGinnis shows up the next day, taking Nancy into custody due to political pressure in the town. An arsonist is afoot in River Heights, and unless her friends can dig up some dirt on someone — or everyone — else, it looks like Nancy Drew won’t just be convicted by the press, but by the town that raised her…
As a mystery, ASH has some great personal stakes — for Nancy and for our suspects — and pretty layered motivations. The cast comes alive through their relations to Nancy, especially as she’s unprotected with Carson being in Australia. The shift in the mystery that occurs when Nancy can finally get out and speak to the suspects — and seeing how differently they treat her than how they treated the other members of the cast — really helps to add something new to a mystery that’s tying itself up a bit, and give it the last push of gas it needs to get us to the conclusion.
While it’s not the most involved, complex, or thematic Nancy Drew mystery ever, it does what it needs to do, and does it well – and that’s honestly all I want in a game more devoted (as it should be) to character than it is to a twisty plot.
The Suspects:
ASH has a rather full cast (not because of the size of the suspect pool, but because there are so many people involved that should be mentioned), so let’s get started with our suspects, then move on to our other cast members.
Brenda Carlton, resident Reporter of River Heights News and perpetual thorn in Nancy’s side, is both our first suspect and our culprit, proving once again that the media cannot be trusted. We haven’t had a reporter be our culprit in 21 games (TRT’s Lisa being the previous example), so I guess we were due, but Brenda is a delightfully hateful example of just how bad the media can be, so kudos for that.
And this game didn’t even come out in an election year. How refreshing.
As a suspect, Brenda is awesome. Catty, arrogant, and with a penchant for dressing up as Nancy – titian wig and all! – to perform her dastardly, dastardly acts, the game doesn’t try to be subtle for one second that she’s up to no good. While Nancy and Brenda are equally as interested — and equally as talented, by all appearances – in ferreting out a good story, Brenda takes it a step further and makes one if she can’t find one – and nurses a grudge against Nancy for exposing her for it.
Up next is ice cream shop owner and scaly politician Antonia “Toni” Scallari, a woman with a bright-eyed, smiling public face — and if you don’t like that face, don’t worry…she has others. Toni is your typical politician — pretends to be nice and pleasant, is actually a scheming villain, hates people who do honest work, and thinks that fairness in government is a luxury – but the game does stop shy of making her The Villain, preferring instead to show the crimes she’s committed in her search for money and power and letting her quietly bow out of the election.
So definitely better than she deserved, but at least the game shows her corrupt nature rather than sweeping it under the rug.
As a suspect, Toni would have made a decent villain, but it would have turned the game into a tale of cold political expediency and machinations, rather than hot-blooded revenge, and that would have been a shame. I’m a fan of how the games from about TOT on always have multiple characters who Do Crimes and Bad Things, and Toni is a prime example of a bad guy who just happens not to be The Bad Guy.
Third on the docket of suspects is our resident grumpy old man (and Nancy’s foil in this game) Alexei Markovic, who provides not only some of the best voice work in the game, but whose age is also proof that Nancy’s dad really is the silver-haired DILF we’ve been waiting for.
C’mon, he prosecuted Alexei when Alexei was 20. The youngest Carson could have been was 25 if he booked it through college, took no breaks to study for the LSAT, and blazed through law school — and immediately got a job the day after graduation. And seeing as Alexei has the “old coot” personality and grey hair…well, Carson is probably straddling the line between DILF and GILF.
(I’m so sorry for that aside, guys, it got away from me. I’m equally sorry for the first recorded use of the term “GILF” in the Nancy Drew fandom. It’s not the legacy I wanted, but perhaps the legacy I deserve.)
Back to Alexei!
Alexei is a great character, full-stop, and his VA just improves the experience more. Bitter and jaded, but by no means uncaring or evil or myopic about his troubles, Alexei is, where Nancy is concerned, a bleeding heart whose blood happens to run cold. While he could be bitter about Carson playing a part in taking away everything he had, and thus treat Nancy poorly, he instead empathizes deeply, wants to help, and, in effect, treats her the way that somebody — anybody — should have treated him.
As a suspect, Alexei, as Nancy’s foil in the game, would have been a poor choice; he’s not really there to be suspicious, he’s there to show the stakes of the mystery. No matter if Carson could find a world-class defender to get Nancy off the charges, no matter if they couldn’t even indict her, the stakes aren’t “Nancy will go to jail for Realsies” — the stakes are the town turning its back, she loses those she loves, and is unable to do the job that is the essence of who she is. In other words, if things go poorly, Nancy becomes Alexei.
One of the reasons that Alexei is such a good character is that he recognizes this immediately, and is determined to do all he can to prevent that. Sure, he knows the odds are stacked against him, and the whole town is his enemy, and he won’t get anything for helping out — but at his heart, he’s still the Magnificent Markovic; “no case too big, no fee too small,” remember?
Last of the actual suspects is noted red-light runner and girl in envious, envious green, Deirdre Shannon. Deirdre’s a rather divisive character in the fandom — especially of late — but is a character I stand firmly on the side of great, for a few reasons.
The first is that the games took a 1-dimensional, wouldn’t-cast-a-shadow-if-you-turned-her-sideways character from the Girl Detective books, there purely to make Nancy look good, and instead gave her a fully realized character, sympathetic motivations, and a whip-sharp tongue.
The second is her hilarious banter with the River Heights crew and wry sense of humor, which would be enough to make her a favorite character of mine alone.
Annoyed by constant, unflattering comparisons to Nancy from her parents (her father also being a lawyer in River Heights), she’s amused when Nancy’s arrested — though, if you read in between the lines, never suspects Nancy actually set the fire nor thinks Nancy will ultimately get the blame — though not as amused at Bess’ spying on her. She harbors a not-secret crush on Ned and enjoys spending time with him, girlfriend or no girlfriend — though it should be noted that even Ned isn’t spared her sharp tongue.
As a culprit, Deirdre would have been the obvious choice for writers who were the caliber of…well, of the Girl Detective series writers, but thankfully we’re on a higher playing field with Nik, Cathy, and the rest of the crew behind ASH. Deirdre is a snarky observer, but that’s as far as her ‘evil’ goes — and looking at her methodology for solving the Clues Challenge clues (and her commentary on her compatriots) is a joy — real detective work, indeed!
After our suspects, let’s talk about our players on the side of Right — or at least, on the side of Nancy — starting with the girl detective herself (as we will for all of the Nancy Games). ASH provides a better look at Nancy than we’ve had before (as befitting the first of the Nancy Games)
Nancy Drew is our main character, sometimes-protagonist, and at times villain protagonist — especially in the eyes of our culprits — when it comes to unearthing long-buried hurts and wrongs. Stuck in jail for a crime she didn’t commit due to political and community pressure, for the first time, the girl detective can’t really do anything by herself, and is relegated to “phone friend” while her boyfriend and childhood friends are running around frantically trying to introduce reasonable doubt in a frame-up par excellence.
Our source in SPY refers to Nancy as an autodidact — one who teaches themselves — and that’s a perfect summation of Nancy’s character. She’s no museum expert, nor cowgirl, nor entomologist, nor any other hat she’s put on — but she can fake it if someone hums a few bars. Her other big pluses as a detective are (once again according to the source in SPY) in interrogation and code/puzzle breaking — and the differences in the questions that Ned et al pose and the questions Nancy poses to our suspects does bear out the first point, at the very least. Her code and puzzle skills are the usual fallback for the games’ mysteries, more so in the modern games than in older ones (which is both a good and bad thing, depending on what types of puzzles you like).
In ASH, we learn about a key trait of Nancy’s — self-sufficiency, and, more importantly, the limits of that self-sufficiency. Able to fake most things until she makes it, Nancy is finally put in a situation where she can’t do anything by herself, and it’s a source of frustration and impatience to her that overrides other feelings (“Also, I’m in jail, and I would really like to get out,” anyone?). It’s rather stunning that Nancy goes from a triumphant Girl in the Dress to stuck in a police station, relying on the phone and her own intuition, and it does some good for her character exposure and development.
Next up is Edward “Ned” Nickerson, erstwhile boyfriend and long-suffering Emerson College student, Ned is part of an honors fraternity and is in River Heights for the Clues Challenge — and to see his girlfriend, of course. While his attempts to be Detective Ned have really only resulting in finding the keys that were in his pocket, Ned is nevertheless quite useful in getting information out of Deirdre (and is responsible for one of the funniest bits of dialogue in the game that’s not spoken directly by Deirdre).
According to the files from SPY, Ned’s defining characteristics are his honestly and his loyalty, both of which mean that he’s the ideal ‘phone friend’ when Nancy’s in a pickle — and means of course he’d be front and center, ready to do anything he needs to in order to help clear Nancy’s name. His main role in the game, however (and very interesting, as one of 6 or so Neirdre shippers in the fandom!) is to be the object of Deirdre’s window-shopping affections and to be made fun of (good-naturedly, of course) by his friends.
Because of his relationship (such as it is) with an overtly antagonistic character, Ned’s a lot of fun in ASH. I feel like he gets a lot of characterization that he often lacks in most other games (excepting CAP and SPY, of course), and it just makes me like him more.
George Fayne is also here to help — though, irritatingly, not required the same way Bess and Ned are — with her knowledge of technology and impeccable Togo-watching skills. George is a great character in the OG Nancy Drew books – the ultra-modern, straightforward, clumsy flapper, to contrast Bess’ more genteel sensibilities and Nancy’s down to earth, practical, yet fashionable nature — and one of the greatest disservices that the 60s rewrites, post-60s ND books, and, yes, the game series has done to the ND universe is to turn her into a “hurr-durr tomboy because name George like boy name” sort of mockery of her original character.
And no, I’m not crediting her as “Georgia”, because that was not her name in the books. Her name was George, full stop — once again, quite fashionable of her to have a “boy’s” name in the 20s/30s — named after her grandfather. You may fight me on this, but you will not win.
George is noted to have above-average skills in mechanical engineering, and indeed creates a jammer to stop Brenda’s broadcast in the game, but is otherwise…well, kind of pushed to the side in favor of Bess and Ned, her enmity with Deirdre notwithstanding. I’ll address this issue more in The Un-Favorite and The Fix, but a few tweaks while developing the game would have gone a long way towards defining George as a character — we’re ignoring MED wholesale, don’t worry — and helping the gameplay be a bit more varied.
George’s maternal cousin, Elizabeth “Bess” Marvin, on the other hand, is basically required to get what you need to know from Toni, but is very much not the favorite person of Alexei, due to her breaking an antique vase upon coming into his shop.
When a vase can survive the Nazis but not Bess Marvin, it seems a shame that Bess didn’t go to France with Nancy during DAN. They would have found that secret room with the artwork in like a minute and a half.
Bess is mentioned to lack judgment (her reveal of George’s crush on the snack shop boy illustrates that pretty well) but to have above-average intuition and, while manipulated easily enough, is too honest for that manipulation to really cause any lasting harm. Because of her sweet, open nature — and her open pocketbook when it comes to ice cream — she’s a favorite of Toni’s, and uses that in order to try to clear Nancy’s name and discover just what illegal, corrupt pies Toni has her grubby little politician hands in.
Going a little less friendly and a little less college-aged for our next helper, we turn to Chief McGinnis, a grumpy pushover of a cop who’s really only important for letting Nancy walk around a Police Station and solve a crime while under arrest because he didn’t wanna do his job, and for a hilarious diatribe about Pancake City.
Seriously, I go and watch that scene every so often when I need a good laugh. ASH has some fabulous comic writing, and McGinnis’ rant is a prime example.
McGinnis is pretty ineffectual as a helper, but he does allow for the first 2/3 of the game to happen by locking Nancy up (“You cannot leave jail! This is a very basic concept!), and for that, we salute him.
Rounding out our cast of Nancy-supporters is Carson Drew, who is (frustratingly, to him) stuck in Australia when all this goes down, and thus cannot use his legal prowess to free her.
Of course, as a prosecutor, I’m not sure how much help he’d be anyway, but hey, a lawyer is a lawyer is a lawyer, at least in the ever-wise eyes of HER Interactive.
Carson’s really just there (or not there, as the case may be) to explain how Nancy can be locked up with such a powerful lawyer father, honestly, but he gets some good lines in, so we’ll forgive it. He’s also there to round out the “River Heights Cast”, but I can’t help feeling that, if we were gonna have another Drew in this game, I would have taken the puppy over the golf ball. #Togo4Ever
The Favorite:
There’s a lot to love in ASH, so I’m going to focus on the biggest things. Suffice to say if a part of the game isn’t in this section but isn’t in the Un-Favorite, I love it.
I’m going to start off just by saying that the dialogue in ASH is wonderful. We’ve got distinct individual voices, sarcasm galore, enough cattiness to fuel the Halle Berry movie, and great interpersonal work, especially with Alexei.
One of the places Nik truly shines is dialogue, and a small-town environment like River Heights really shows off his skill. I sometimes hear the charge that “no one talks like this!!” leveled against the Nik games but, honestly, I talk to people every day who speak similarly to Nik’s characters, allowing for the differences in written and spoken speech, and so do most people I know. Allusions, analogies, metaphors, and aphorisms aren’t just for English class — they’re part of speaking well.
If you really wanna see dialogue where “no one talks like this,” look at the early ND games. FIN is a particularly bad offender, but SCK and STFD aren’t much better.
My favorite puzzle in the game is the letter swap puzzle inside of Scoop, by far. Sure, I enjoy other puzzles — Alexei’s number box, fingerprinting, the suspect board — immensely, and have a blast doing them, but I can spend hours figuring out old quotes on that aqua background and not notice the time passing one jot. It’s fun, references old games, and is exactly the kind of puzzle that gets me excited anyway, and I love it to pieces.
My favorite moment in the game is probably the moment Nancy takes control and goes and talks to Toni, oddly enough. The stark difference in what Toni says about Nancy while she’s in the station to what she says to her face is like a brick wall to the chest, and is, every time, the moment when you see exactly how River Heights turned on Alexei so completely as to push him out of his job and into the antique business. It’s a moment of almost stomach-sinking disgust, and I absolutely adore the game for not pulling its punches and instead keeping true to one of its major themes — that you need to see who people are in the dark, not when they’re facing you.
In the light of day, Alexei is just a cantankerous old man; Toni is a smiling, motherly ice cream store owner, Brenda is a hard-hitting reporter, and Deirdre is a vapid Queen Bee type. Under the cover of darkness, however, we see Alexei’s charity and heart, Toni’s corruption and two-faced nature, Brenda’s unethical and illegal means to her ends, and Deirdre’s soft center. And I love the game for pointing out the world of difference it makes to see what someone truly is.
For my last point, there are two characters are of note in this game that I love for very different reasons.
The first is Alexei, who is the inspiration behind the title of the meta. There’s something incredibly compelling about Alexei’s down-to-earth nature and the way he deals with being dealt the poorest hand in the world without ever dipping into “woe is me” or any other self-indulgent crap. Insatiably curious, bright, and caustic, Alexei feels like the perfect person to sit down, drink a cup of something warm, and talk about puzzles, antiques, and harsh truths with.
He’s a character who watched his entire life fall apart with one bad person’s actions — “one time, just once, I tried to speak truth to power, and man if I didn’t pay the price” — but still had it in him to keep going, even if it wasn’t what he was doing before. He went from being the town’s golden boy to a pariah, and yet still looks after River Heights and its history, even becoming the curator of the River Heights Museum (when it opens). The difference between his reaction to being falsely accused to, say, Noisette Tornade’s (DAN) reaction to being “falsely” accused is huge and, I think, rather inspiring.
The second is Deirdre Shannon, if you couldn’t tell by my gushing about her above, and, can I just say, I love everything about her. There’s a temptation to assume at first blush that she’s your average boy-stealing popular rich girl a la WAC, but actually looking at her tells a different story.
Sure, the rich part is true — but so is Nancy, and from the looks of their houses and all the trips/vacations they do, the Marvins and Faynes seem pretty well off as well. She shares the tendency for a sharp tongue with Nancy as well (as befitting her status as Nancy’s foil in DED, stay tuned!). Deirdre also doesn’t qualify as popular — her two “friends” that she hangs out with in ASH for the Clues Challenge are still in their “free trial”, and aren’t really her friends.
And her feelings for Ned? While she openly flirts with him (even if Ned doesn’t get it until the girls tell him), Deirdre isn’t looking to actually cause damage (if only because she sees Ned as completely unobtainable), and is up-front about everything she does to Nancy’s face. Putting yourself in her shoes, she’s a bright girl, in love with a boy who is the definition of out-of-reach, is constantly (and negatively) compared to the boy’s girlfriend, and feels stuck in her small town, desperate to move beyond the boredom. In other words, in any other story, she’s the protagonist. It just so happens — as she’s acutely aware — not to be her story. And that’s the kind of character that it’s impossible for me not to love.
And speaking of things impossible to love…
The Un-Favorite:
My biggest problem with ASH, as was mentioned above, is the fact that George is relegated mechanically and interpersonally to the “unimportant” bin. Nancy, Bess, and Ned all have suspects that like and don’t like them, while all George gets is a note that her and Deirdre particularly don’t get along — no extrapolation, no explanation. It makes the decision to include her as a playable character feel a bit like a last-minute decision, like Bess and Ned were planned and George was supposed to be watching Togo until the very end when she makes the jammer or something.
My least favorite puzzle in the game has got to be the stacking of the boxes and crawling towards the exit at the start to escape the fire; it’s a time-sensitive puzzle, which are usually my least favorite, and takes the mechanics of Renate’s bag puzzle and small visual distinctions, which we’ve already noted in the last meta are not particularly my jam either. I wouldn’t replace or get rid of it, it’s just my least favorite. I tend to start my game from a save I have after the puzzle — while I have to refresh on the opening occasionally, it’s better than the frustration from the combined puzzle.
I don’t have a least favorite moment from the game, to be quite honest, so let’s move on to the last section of this meta.
The Fix:
So how would I fix Alibi in Ashes?
The big thing I would change would to be to ensure that each member of Team Danger should have one culprit that likes them and one culprit that hates especially them. Nancy already has Alexei for her plus and Brenda for her minus, and Bess should keep Toni and Alexei, respectively, but both Ned and George need one more. Luckily, with four friends and four suspects, they’ll divide up evenly very easily.
My fix would be to have Ned keep Deirdre as his plus and give him Toni as his minus (local business owners usually don’t like football players for being rowdy and taking up a lot of seats, plus he’s Nancy’s boyfriend and staunchest defender).
George, meanwhile, keeps Deirdre as her minus (though flesh it out a bit more — what exactly went wrong there?) and gains Brenda as her plus. Not only would this make the endgame where she creates the jammer a little more interesting, I’d note that George and Brenda have a bit in common, due to Brenda’s technical and mechanical prowess that we see throughout the game. Throw in something with George having done a technical internship with the River Heights broadcasting network or something during high school, and we’d get a slightly different side of Brenda, even though George still dislikes her privately.
Just fixing this issue would be enough to where nothing in ASH would stand out as a real negative, but for my second, smaller fix, I’d make the friends able to call each other to change off, instead of having to call Nancy, then have her call the other person. That slows the game down and is needlessly clunky, and I’m still not quite sure why they did it.
Once those two things are fixed, there’s nothing in the way of ASH being a truly excellent game. Sure, it’s not as thematic as the few games preceding it, but it’s not supposed to be — it’s supposed to have an entertaining mystery while showing us a little more of who Nancy really is and why she does what she does, and on those (and most other) fronts, ASH is an incredibly solid, enjoyable game that I replay whenever I get the chance.

Tumblr media
Please check if the ask box is open AND read my “What I write” post before sending in an ask. Thank you.
Tumblr media
(A green heart means low/med. Angst)
Thank you for the love and support <3!
So turns out you submitted your ask as a… submission instead of an ask, lol. no big deal, I’m doing this and tagging you. @uwuttaja
This is kinda a deconstructed fic… it got long cause I just kept typing and typing and idk what happened.
This got long so ...
You hadn’t left on the best of terms with the gang
Some of them were sad to see you go
You shared hugs and “I’ll miss you”s
Others were angry that you’d abandon them like that
Were they not your family?
Didn’t you love them?
Were they not good enough for you anymore?
Those who were angry didn’t even see you off
...
They hadn’t seen you in years
There were some new faces you wouldn’t recognize
And a few missing faces that would make your heart ache
If you were to have a reunion with them it wasn’t meant to go like this
...
Arthur was the first one you saw
As he entered the train car you pointed your gun, as he pointed his
Thankfully the two of you paused long enough to see each other before either of you fired
He and the others had thought the train stopped because they fired their weapons in warning
In reality it was your gang that was there first
Your gang took out the driver and stopped the train
They heard gunshots and you went to confront whoever it was
You weren’t expecting him
He looked hurt and relieved at the same time
Hurt to see you again
Relieved to see you alive
You wanted to hug him
You’d missed them all so much
“What are you doin’ here?” he asks.
“We were here first.”
“We?”
He frowns. You’d replaced them.
“We got less people than you. We’ll split it. For old times sake,” you offer
You hear footsteps and next see Javier and Sean
They stop dead in their tracks
Sean looks overjoyed
Javier looks angry
“Well, look at you!” Sean exclaimed. “Bet ya never though’ you’d hav’ ta deal wit’ me again!”
Sean was ready to hug you
Javier looked ready to shoot you
“They got here first” Arthur says “But they offered to split with us.”
“Robbin’ a train all by yerself, there?” Sean sounded proud and amused.
It’s then one of your men enter the car
“Boss, ya okay-?”
They pull out their gun but you hold up a hand and they lower it.
“Boss?” Arthur asks with a proud smile he’s trying and failing to hide
“Yeah,” you nod. “Didn’t want the title,” you add with a shrug.
“Didn’t give ‘em much choice,” your man says. “Rounded everything up this way.” He motions behind him.
You nod.
“We’ll take our leave then. They get the rest.” You motion to the three.
The four men look shocked for different reasons
“Yer not even gonna pop by an’ say hi?” Sean asks with a disappointed frown
“Boss, we only cleared two cars,” your man protests.
There were about five more cars filled with supplies and such.
“They have more mouths to feed,” you tell him. “We have enough,”
“You sure?” Arthur asks
Javier is silent.
He missed you
He can’t tell you that though
You left them
You betrayed them
You had replaced them
You were family
and you just went and got a new one like they didn’t even matter
“Get the others, we’re leaving,” you tell your man.
Sean starts to whine but Javier smacks his arm
You turn and walk past your guy, leaving the car before hopping off the train
You whistle for your horse
Then you see them
Dutch, Lenny, Bill and a few unfamiliar faces.
The three look shocked while the others look confused.
Arthur exits the other side of the car and hops down
He walks up to Dutch to explain
You’re leaving everything in the last five cars to them
Dutch calls out to you and you stop as your horse reaches you
You make eye contact and he nods
You return the nod before mounting your horse
Three other horses approach upon the whistles of their owners
Then the four of you are off
Never to see the Van Der Linde Gang again
Or so you thought
It was as if fate was playing a sick joke on you
You saw them all again
Over the next week you had bumped into more and more of them
Mary-Beth and Tilly at the store
You almost started crying when they hugged you
Arthur again and Charles (Who you didn’t know) while out hunting
Arthur had to explain who you were
The three of you had been hunting two deer who ended up in the same area
You offered them the rabbits you had already gotten but they both refused
Bill, Micah (who you didn’t know), Javier and Lenny at a saloon one night
Lenny gave you a small wave and a sad smile
while Bill and Javier gave you the cold shoulder
Micah just sat there in confusion until someone explained
...
When Arthur bumped into you for the third time,
You were sitting at a table at the saloon, your boys at the bar having a good time
Arthur saw you and you saw him at about the same time
He finally decided to do what the world seemed to want him to do
he sat down across from you and let out a sigh
“How are they?” you asked. “Everyone.”
You couldn’t stop the words from leaving your lips. You had to know.
“Good...kinda.”
“How’s Jack? And Abigail?”
“Good. Boy’s four now. John came back.”
You smiled at that.
“Lost a few...Jenny, Mac and Davey.”
Your smile fell.
Jenny had cried the most when you left
You missed her and were hoping to see her again
“I’m...sorry,”
You didn’t know if you were speaking to Arthur or to Jenny
“Picked up a few new ones though,” He leaned back in the chair. “Even got us an O’Driscoll.”
“I’m sorry, what?”
He chuckled at the expression on your face
“Ex-O’Driscoll. Saved my life actually.” He seemed reluctant to admit it
“Hosea?”
“Alive. Still has that nasty cough.”
“The girls? I saw Mary-Beth and Tilly but… Molly and Karen?”
“All there, Miss Grimshaw keeps ‘em busy.” This made both of you smile.
“Is he mad?” you finally ask.
“You mean Dutch?” You nod.
“He knows you had your reasons...” he hesitates on his next words. “If you wanted to come see every-”
“I can’t,” you cut him off. “I’m sorry Arthur. I am, but I just can’t.”
He nods silently.
“I miss them all more than you ever believe but I can’t see them all. Just seeing Tilly and- I’ll want to stay and-”
“He’d let you,” he says.
“What?”
“He’d let you come back. I could talk to him-”
“Don’t. I left for a reason… I can’t go back.” You put a hand on his and he stared down at the table.
His hand moved to hold yours and he nodded.
“Just don’t get yourself killed out there,” his voice was soft.
“I’ll try not to,” you feel tears welling up in your eyes
As he stood up to leave, they fell
“Arthur!”
He stops and looks to you
“You too. Don’t get killed out there.”
He smiles.
“I’ll try not to,”
I... don’t know what I just wrote... was that angst? was that good? probably not... I hope you like it anyways. I did try.

The Shocking Case of O.J. Simpson (Part 1)
Yep, we’re back with this insanity! In honor of me getting through the first week of winter semester, here is the next installment in KISS Unsolved! However, unlike last time, where we saw Paul, Gene, and Vinnie going on a hunt for the supernatural, here we see them covering a true crime case, because Buzzfeed Unsolved also covers unsolved true crime cases. It actually took me quite a while to decide which episode to adapt for this, but ultimately I decided on this one, partly because this case really fascinates me. I also decided that since there’s three co-hosts in this AU, Vinnie’s going to be the one covering the true crime cases (I thought it fitting, since he’s a bit of an unsolved mystery himself). Here is the original episode if you want to watch that before reading this story.
A quick note about this one: I learned from last time to split up the episodes so I don’t go over the post length limit and Tumblr starts acting like a jerk. I know it’s awkward, but that’s how it’s gonna have to be.
IMPORTANT NOTE: this case is very controversial. I realize that. It also contains some effed-up details that some people may not be comfortable with reading. If at any point you are feeling uncomfortable, please do not hesitate to stop reading. You are not a lesser person for it.
And now, without further ado, enjoy!

Something said in unison
Tumblr media
[screen cuts from title card to Vinnie, Gene, and Paul sitting behind a desk cluttered with papers, pens, a desk lamp, and other objects. Behind them are bulletin boards full of things from various unsolved cases and conspiracies. In order from left to right: Paul, Gene, Vinnie]
VINNIE: This week on Buzzfeed Unsolved, we discuss the brutal murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman, or as you may know it: the case of O. J. Simpson, who was Nicole’s ex-husband, a Hall of Fame running back in the NFL, and the case’s top suspect.
PAUL: Fun fact: we’re all old enough to remember this case.
GENE: Yep. I remember there was a lot of Yiddish thrown around my house after the verdict.
VINNIE: A lot of people our age and older than us will remember quite a bit about this case. I remember watching it on television.
PAUL:  Yeah, I actually never knew O. J. was a football player. I always knew him as the guy who murdered someone.
GENE: Me too.
VINNIE: Yeah. There’s a lot of unpack here, so… let’s get into it. [opens folder]
[screen cuts away from the three to a black screen. Pictures and text appear on screen as Vinnie narrates]
VINNIE [voiceover]: In the early morning of June 13th, 1994, at 12:10 AM, the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L. Goldman were found outside Nicole’s Brentwood townhouse, stabbed to death.
[screen cuts to the three of them in a car driving through a neighborhood, Brentwood. Vinnie is driving, Paul is in the passenger seat, aiming a camera at Vinnie, and Gene is in the backseat]
VINNIE: So right now, we are on our way to Nicole Brown Simpson’s former residence. [time skip: the car parks on the side of the street]
PAUL: [looks at the house across the street] Is that it, right over there?
VINNIE: Yep. That’s the place.
GENE: I feel… I don’t really feel all that right going into this place.
VINNIE: Oh, we’re not going onto the property.
GENE: We’re not? I thought we were going to go see where the bodies were found.
VINNIE: Oh hell no, we’re not doing that.
PAUL: That is kind of disrespectful.
GENE: Okay, good.
[all three of them sit still for a couple beats. Then Vinnie sighs and unbuckles his seatbelt, and opens the door to get out. Gene and Paul follow suit. Screen cuts back to the slideshow]
VINNIE [voiceover]: At the time, Nicole and O. J. Simpson were divorced and living in separate residences, both in Brentwood. The bodies were discovered by two neighbors who were literally led to the crime scene by Nicole’s dog. Multiple neighbors would say the dog was incessantly barking at the time of the murder. [audio of a barking dog plays with the narration]
[cuts back to the sidewalk in front of Nicole Brown Simpson’s house. Paul has the camera on Vinnie, who is taking steps while Gene watches off to the side]
VINNIE: So the dog led the neighbors down the street, to the entrance, and they saw the blood coming down from the entrance to the sidewalk.
[cuts to the three once again sitting in the car; it is now darker out]
PAUL: What occurs to me, though, is how close together all these apartments are. And how…
VINNIE: How no one heard…
PAUL: Yeah. From the way I always heard it, I assumed the houses were really spread out and the street was bigger. But no, they’re all pretty stacked on top of each other. I think… I feel like someone would have had to have heard something.
VINNIE: … That’s a good point, I never thought about that. [runs his hand over his face] Jesus…
GENE: This case just got so much heavier.
[screen cuts back to the slideshow]
VINNIE [voiceover]: Let’s go over the established, highly-detailed timeline. On June 12th, 1994 at 6:30 PM, Nicole, her children, and others arrive at a restaurant called Mezzaluna. At 9:15 PM, Nicole’s sister calls Mezzaluna and says her mother left her glasses there. Ronald Goldman goes to pick up the glasses. At 9:00 – 9:30 PM, Brian “Kato” Kaelin and O. J. Simpson go to McDonald’s for dinner.
Can’t imagine McDonald’s was excited to hear that…
Yeah…
…as part of the testimony.
Was that part of the testimony?
I mean it had to have been, since it’s on the official timeline.
… Well.
*snickering*
I mean… it got a lot of coverage at the time so… free advertising, I guess?
Yeah, I suppose.
VINNIE [voiceover]: At 9:45 PM, Kato and O. J. return home from McDonald’s. Kato was staying in O. J.’s guest house at the time. At 9:48 to 9:50 PM, Goldman leaves Mezzaluna with an envelope containing Nicole’s mother’s glasses. At 10:15 PM, Nicole Simpson’s neighbor hears a dog bark and cry while he is watching TV. The prosecution would later cite these barks as Nicole’s dog, who was crying out over the murder of its owner, Nicole.
They went by dog bark?
Well all dog barks are a bit different. The neighbor could’ve recognized it as Nicole’s dog from the bark.
Yeah, that’s probably what happened.
Honestly, I feel like the dog is the real hero of this story.
*laughs* I don’t think there are many heroes in this story, Gene.
No, let’s say that. We need at least one good thing to come out of this story.
Fine, okay. This dog’s a regular Lassie.
VINNIE [voiceover]: At 10:25 PM, a limo driver named Allan Park arrives at O. J.’s home, O. J. having been scheduled for a red eye flight from L. A. to Chicago at 11:45 PM. At 10:40 PM, O. J.’s guest, Kato, hears three loud thumps on the outside wall of the guest house he is staying in. From 10:40 to 10:55 PM, Park buzzes O. J.’s intercom several times, but there is no answer. Just before 11:00 PM, Park sees a shadowy figure—six feet tall, two hundred pounds—walking across the driveway towards the house. At 11:00 PM, Park tries buzzing the intercom again; this time, O. J. answers. O. J. tells Park that he had overslept and had just gotten out of the shower.
Suspicious.
Yeah, quite suspicious.
This is a very detailed description of a “shadowy figure.”
*laughs* Yeah, “He was six feet, weighed two hundred pounds—and was enshrouded in shadow.”
*laughter*
VINNIE [voiceover]: At 11:45 PM, O. J. departs on an American Airlines flight to Chicago. And taking us back to the start, at 12:10 AM, the bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L. Goldman are discovered outside her townhouse stabbed to death. Evidence found at the crime scene includes a bloodstained glove left behind by the killer, a knitted hat, and a bloody footprint. At 5:00 PM, detectives arrive at O. J.’s house and discover some key pieces of evidence… but we’ll get to that later. Meanwhile, O. J.’s flight lands in Chicago. According to lead prosecutor Marcia Clark, Detective Ron Philips called O. J. to inform him his ex-wife was dead. O. J.’s first response: “Who killed her?”
Not good.
Yes, very not good.
Not, “How did she die?”
Nope.
“What happened?”
Nope.
“Who killed her”… that’s what he said.
*quiet laughter*
That’s not the go-to question there.
*laughter* Heheh, no, it is not.
Not the best decision ya could’ve made, O. J.
VINNIE [voiceover]: O. J. was questioned for three hours by the LAPD, but released. On June 17th, 1994, O. J. was charged with the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman. But he famously did not surrender to the police, and was declared a fugitive. The ensuing low-speed police chase of O. J. on the freeways of southern California in his white Ford Bronco is a lasting memory for anybody familiar with the case.
Do either of you remember this?
Oh yeah, I definitely remember this.
My memories of this are actually a little vague. I do remember people talking about this after it happened, though.
I think my sister actually yelled at the screen for O. J. to go faster.
*laughter*
VINNIE [voiceover]: O. J. was in the passenger seat, while the car was driven by his friend, Al Cowlings. Cowlings explained he did not stop because O. J. had a gun to his own head in the car, and because O. J. was suicidal. A suicide note written by O. J. was in fact found, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
[screen cuts to the three back in the car. It is daytime, and they are now on the freeway]
VINNIE: So right now, we are going about the speed O. J. was going, and we’re in rush-hour traffic.
PAUL: I gotta say, I’m actually a little bored.
GENE: This doesn’t exactly feel like Fast and Furious.
VINNIE: Well, the stuff in Fast and Furious probably doesn’t happen in real life, Genie.
VINNIE [voiceover]: During the chase, they recorded a phone call between O. J. and homicide detective Tom Lange. Here’s some audio from that:
LANGE: Nobody’s going to get hurt.
SIMPSON: I’m the only one that deserves…
LANGE: No, you don’t deserve that.
SIMPSON: I’m gonna get hurt…
LANGE: You do not deserve to get hurt.
SIMPSON: [groans]
LANGE: You do not deserve to get hurt. Don’t do this.
SIMPSON: All I did was love Nicole. All I did was love her.
VINNIE [voiceover]: The chase would end at O. J.’s home in Brentwood. Inside the car, they found, in what I imagine was unintentional humor, makeup adhesive, a fake mustache and goatee, O. J.’s passport, and a gun.
Pfft, hahahahah—!
*laughing* What the hell?
*laughing* I know, that’s—just try to imagine one of the most famous people at this time, trying to sneak through airport security with a glued-on mustache…
That’s hilarious!
… and thinking it’s gonna work.
This guy didn’t even change his passport, that’s… was he even trying at all?
VINNIE [voiceover]: O. J. surrendered to the police at 8:51 PM. Now, let’s go over the suicide note. Apart from thanking those who meant a lot to him in his life, O. J. professed his innocence. Quote, “First, everyone understand. I have nothing to do with Nicole’s murder. I loved her; always have and always will. If we had a problem, it’s because I loved her so much.”
Well, that’s… kinda sweet, I guess…
Seems kinda over the top to me.
I had the same impression. Overall, though, when you put it in with everything else… I don’t know.
What’s our consensus here, do we all agree that he did it?
I have actually been told that we should refrain from explicitly saying who we think did it.
Oh, really?
Why?
Well, because this is a very controversial case. We all remember how controversial it was. We don’t wanna step on any toes.
... I guess that’s fair.
Yeah, that’s fair.
To be continued in Part 2!

A Taste of Home-Chapter 5
Warnings: Language.
Tumblr media
(I do not own any of the images used in this piece)
You stood back from him, dancing anxiously and shamefully on your feet, mulling over the pitiful train wreck he must think you are. He was chatting on his phone, you were too preoccupied to care about to whom, or what the call consisted of.
“Ok, so. I’ve got a car on the way since I was totally counting on you to be my ride back to ma’s house. But, in the meantime, gimme your phone.” He opened his hand, and gave you eager brows of demand.
You obeyed his obviously impatient ask, and handed over the nearly dead device, watching him swipe a thumb over the screen. He held yours in one massive hand, and his in the other, nodding back and forth between the two.
“Thank you very much.” He matter-of-factly thanked you, still never looking up but handing back your cellular.
His screen was hidden, and he was tapping rigorously at it, and suddenly you heard the robotic beeps of an outgoing Facetime call. Chris turned his hat backwards, maybe to take away its casting shadow over his face, and his eyes turned dark when the beeps stopped.
“What in the fu-“ You knew that voice on the other end. This would be so pleasantly bad….
“No, no. I talk, you get to shut that ugly fucking mouth.” Chris sarcastically closed his eyes and held up a wagging finger to the person on the receiving end of his call. “Now, I don’t know your name, nor do I give a shit. So, we’ll just call you the very appropriately given name in Millie’s contacts as shithead. Okay, shithead?”
You were horrified, and mortified, and hot, and confused like no drug could ever make you.
The man you once called your spouse made no peeps, undoubtably nearly drunk with confusion and questioning his current grip on reality.
“See, that bullshit, ya’ know, with Amelia’s car, that just doesn’t work for me. So, I thought I’d ask, no demand, as politely as my saint of a mother taught me how, that you reverse whatever little stunt you orchestrated. She was MY ride home this afternoon, and I don’t take too kindly to being left stranded in the middle of Boston. NOR, do I take kindly to any piece of worthless shit like yourself treating someone I care about as such.”
“Woah, woah. Let’s just wait a minute here. What in the hell do you have to do with Amelia?”
Chris’ teeth crunched together like gravel under an 18-wheeler, and like a mood ring, you could see his face illuminate the same red of his boiling internal anger.
“Chris, it’s fine, okay? Let’s just let it go.” You sought out his arm to fiddle with the phone, hoping you could disconnect the interaction with the ‘end’ button.
“Wait, is she… is she there? Amelia?”
“Yes, she’s here, you imbecile. We were having a perfectly nice afternoon, and your smug little fuckin’ face had to crash it all the way from Texas. Millie never mentioned she and I were old friends, huh? Well, how’s that for a surprise, you smug shit.”
“Now, I see what this is all about. Mill had to run to her rich friend and beg for a little money, did she? If only her precious little blog hadn’t tanked, maybe she’d be standing on her own two feet. Do yourself a favor, Mr. Evans. Leave her right where you found her, and keep moving. A man like you doesn’t need a girl like Millie, we both know that.” Your ex drawing at straws attempted very foolishly to buddy up with Chris, playing the ‘we’re men, and we think alike all the time’ card. You certainly agreed with him though. Chris didn’t belong anywhere near you, and for the life of you, none of his kindness made any sense.
Your chin dropped like a beaten, timid dog whose owner mistreated him when no one was looking. Chris cleared his throat, and raised your eyes to his. He spoke at Ben, looking directly into your tear-rimmed eyes.
“This woman is so beyond your fuckin’ league, you rotting piece of trash. She’s talented, witty, fun as hell, and lightyears too beautiful for any to disregard.” He turned a cheek towards the phone, and you heard Ben audibly gulp. “And if…. This is your last warning, you fucker. If you don’t turn that tow truck around and have her car back here in one piece within the hour, you’ll answer to me. I’m not usually one of those assholes to play the celebrity bit. But ohhhhhhh, Benny Boy. We both know that I can absolutely ruin you within minutes.” He hung up as a punctuation to the very real threat, Ben’s hands tangled in his hair.
Hearing the loyal, threatening, protective way he had so thoughtlessly jumped to your defense without hesitation erupted your pupils with need to thank him. But not in the way that a friend would thank another friend. Or, the way that would be appropriate for the middle of the street in broad daylight. Never. Not even your once husband who had made a fucking career out of coming to an individual’s defense, had ever swept in to preserve your honor as such. You couldn’t capture his tongue, or jump his bones out of appreciation, but you needed to touch him. You needed to convey with action what words just couldn’t justify. So, you settled for a smothering, waist clenching bear hug. Connecting your cheek to his stone chest, you squeezed him. Squeezed him and smelled him, but hopefully he didn’t catch on to the sniff you gave his t-shirt.
“Thank you. You meathead asshole, you.”
His chuckle rumbled into your ear as he reciprocated your embrace, rubbing calm hands up and down your back. “Take note, Mills. I expect you speak up for yourself like that the next time that worthless shitbag pulls something like this. I know you’ve got quite the mouth on you, Calvert. Tell that fucker where to shove it. You hear me?”
Your chin perched just below his perfect peck as you looked upward to him smiling down at you. He ‘booped’ your nose curtly, then playfully knuckled a noogie atop your already matted hair.
“Ay, Ay, Captain…” Your cheeks puffed with the withholding of a hearty laugh.
“You’ve had that one on cue, haven’t you…”  Chris rolled his eyes with knowing sarcasm.
A dark sedan with impossibly black windows suddenly wheeled next to a parking meter just down the way from the pair of you, and his phone buzzed in unison.
“That’s our car, you asshole.” He lovingly shoved you away. “Get in before I make you walk home in those shoes.”
“How very un-captain of you, Evans. I’ll be speaking with your agents about such lack of chivalry.” You playfully punched his arm, and smiled when his feet bumbled beneath him.
“There’s that smile, Calvert. I’m telling you….”
Your business meeting with Chris’ connection had came and went without a hitch, and now, only 3 days later, you were stepping off your flight towards baggage claim at LAX.
The shoot would be held somewhere in the Malibu hills, and you’d been informed your styling would be for both male, and female models. It was a collection announcing a breakthrough designer from London, so once you learned his identity, you delved into the world wide web for exploration.
A car was waiting just as expected to pack yourself and your suitcase to a suite at some swanky beach spot near the water where you’d be sleeping the next 3 days. There would be the shoot this afternoon, the edits tomorrow, and the editor of the magazine had simply gifted your third day as a gesture to her friendship with Chris. You were certainly not in Kansas, or Boston anymore, and this was truly your first taste of real success in the world of fashion. All thanks to the mysterious kindness of your generous friend.
When you unloaded your wheeled suitcase from the trunk of the car service at the gates of your hotel, you could’ve drooled with envy. It was bright, and airy, and tastefully large, and you were now more so eager to investigate the extravagance of your suite.
Checking in, a bellboy carefully took the bags from your hand, ushering you into the elevator destined for the 25th floor where another member of staff waited beside your room door with a fizzling mimosa. Tipping the both of them, you latched the door behind you and turned into the window-front view of your home-away-from-home. It was perfectly decorated with whites, and sandy creams, and flowing drapes. The king mattress crisp with plush sheets, and a balcony fit for royalty called your name.
Upon your quizzical assessing around the room, you became pleasingly distracted but a healthy bouquet of creamy alabaster orchids on your counter next to a folded piece of cardstock.
Hope your flight wasn’t unbearable.
Enjoy yourself. You’ll be amazing, I know it.
There may be another surprise later in your day….
Oh, and check your phone when you arrive.
X
Chris
Following his vague direction, you pulled your phone from the pocket of your purse, clicking the button to reveal a text from the very man in question. It was a playlist titled ‘Malibu Barbie’ with a message attached:
C: Wear sunscreen when you go to the beach. Blast this playlist marvelously put together by mwah, and always, always drink before 10 a.m. Only in Malibu, baby.
Scrolling over the array of music, you smiled at the presence of songs such as ‘Hot Child in the City, Malibu by Miley, of course, Soak up the Sun, and a welcomed repetition of Ellie Goulding, your favorite. But, how would he know? You banked it as another of the slightly creepy, but always flattering ways of one Chris Evans.
After finishing the perfectly portioned morning cocktail, topping a wicker hat obviously appropriate for the beachy climate, you checked your watch and called for the return of your car. You’d gotten to appreciate the balcony view for a brief moment of downtime, but planned to wind down with a good read later tonight and hopefully catch the sunset.
The studio where you were scheduled to shoot was quaint, and very minimally adorned with props so the focus would only be on the undoubtably beautiful designs you were to highlight. The same woman, Tess, who you had met with days ago welcomed you as you climbed the stairs to the dressing area.
“There’s our girl. How was your flight, Amelia? You look rather rested.” She kissed each of your cheeks.
“I think it’s only the glow of adrenaline you see, but thank you anyway!” You surveyed the room of cameras, and makeup chairs, and light bars. “Again, thank you so much for the opportunity!”
“No need, love. Your work speaks for itself. Now, let’s get up to the dressing room and meet your models, shall we?”
Tess tucked her arm into yours, making you feel strangely… in place, in this world of fashion and editorials, as you had longed to.
She pulled you into a brightly lit room, unpainted brick walls lined with racks, upon racks of lavish fabrics. There were shoes in every color, belts of any length, and hats for every occasion.
“Now, you’ll be working with a male, and female model today, as the designer is trying his hand at menswear this season. So, wait here, mosey around a bit, and I’ll bring them in.”
You walked the hangers, brushing a hand over the variety of velvets, and suedes, and leathers, and tulle. You let yourself have a bit of a giddy fit knowing Tess had briefly left you to yourself, impulsively squealing and bouncing reservedly from one foot to the next.
“I won’t tell anyone about that little dance for a price…”
Surely. No, surely not.
Propped in the door, all casual and handsome like nobody’s business with his hands smashed into the pocket of his acceptably tight jeans, one sneaker crossed over the other. His eyes seemed a bit puffy with the early hour, and his dirty yellow shaded hair climbing in all directions.
“You followin’ me, Evans?” You narrowed your eyes in skepticism, dropping your purse on the floor by a chair before slowly drawing nearer to him.
“If I say yes, would you be flattered of afraid?”
He pulled your hand to swipe you into a hug, uncharacteristically kissing your hand.
“A friendly helping of both, of course.” You meekly let yourself blush. “Seriously though. What’s going on?”
“Well,” he found his way to sit on the sofa beneath the window. “I thought you might be all nervous, and clumsy, and well… predictably Millie about today, so I figured I could be your model. It will be good for Tess and the magazine, plus, I thought having a friendly face around would make you feel a little more at ease. I had a couple days so I thought, “why the hell not, Chris’”.
It made sense in its own way, but you still couldn’t fathom what made him fly all the way out here with his schedule the way it is. He only had a week or so left in Boston before he leaves for filming, why did he mess with the hassle of a two-day trip across the country?
“And I mean, come on? You know I’m a damn good muse, Mil.” Chris winked.
“I’m just concerned how any of these clothes are gonna cover you, beefcake. You’ll rip through every shirt I put on you.” You retorted, winding up and down, back and forth around the racks.
“I could always just do the whole thing in the nude. Wear a pair of the guys shoes, or something.” He cocked his head nonchalantly in that smug, but mind-blowingly sexy way.
The shoot went almost entirely without a hiccup, and the only little snag you did hit was your female model getting a little too handsy with Chris all afternoon. You weren’t at all going for anything risqué, or romantic in any manner of the word, and although every piece of fabric you put on her looked annoyingly flawless, it took way too long to get her to settle her hormones.
The designers every creation was constructed like the perfect masterpiece, making your job for the day a cinch, and you hoped when he flew in tomorrow to approve the final photos that you’d done him justice with your styling.
“I think that might be a wrap, guys and girls.” Tess clapped, tucking her water bottle in the crook of her armpit to free her hands.
The room followed suit, and clapped and hooted, murmurs of ‘thank you’s’ and other flattering filled your ears.
“Tess, wait. Hold up a second, everybody. I have one little suggestion, if I may.” Chris weaved through the crowd towards his editor friend.
“Let’s hear it then.”
He looked to you, shit eating grin already capturing his face.
“Amelia, our amazing stylist, is too peculiarly beautiful to not get in front of that camera for at least one shot. Am I right?”
Every member of the crew immediately followed Chris’s eyes as his smile fell in your direction.
“Oh no, no, no. I’m definitely a behind the camera girl, Chris. Kourtney did an amazing job, we got more than enough shots for today.” You protested, trying to inconspicuously locate the nearest exit.
“I think he may be right about this one, Amelia. As much it pains me to give this fool any credit at all.” Tess marched towards you. “Let’s head into the dressing you. I think I may have a suggestion as to what you should try on…”
You staggered an uneasy line re-entering the bustling set of photographers, styled at the very capable hand of the publication’s editor-in-chief. You couldn’t break apart the spellbinding crush your eyes suddenly had on your bare feet as the chatters about the room decreased to murmurs.
“You are a vison, gorgeous! Mr. Evans knew what he was talking about, clearly!”
The photographer boasted as Tess escorted you in front of the bleached plainness of white backdrop. His praises were able to miraculously capture your attention, and your pupils to his, finding an observing Chris standing at his side.
His blue-flamed stares were categorically forceful, and accidentally intrusive. His face read blank on one hand, but you could almost see the penetrating waves oozing from him if you tilted your head just right, and squinted hard enough. He was deep in thought with either captivated admiration, or robust disgust at you in your state of very foreign glamour compared to how he’d seen you as of recent. Your throat contracted in a gag analyzing his batting eyes, and arching brows.
You kept your theatrics and posing to an appropriate minimal, careful not to take away from the calm beauty of your ensemble, and you were able to somehow, with bold effort, let yourself do your job acceptably despite your most handsome audience member.
“Fuck.”
Chris covered the laughing lines of his mouth as Paul turned the camera toward him, seeking a second opinion on one of your shots.
Tumblr media
“It’s stunning, Mil. I swear to you. You look absolutely phenomenal.”
Paul motioned you over, in clear agreement with Chris, to reveal the already selected shot for the spread. The captured view of your marvelously bold, sharp-turned jaw elicited a baffling gasp from you.
“I think that’s really a wrap, folks. A beautiful one, might I add.” Tess announced.
Chris swooped in to crush you into embracing arms, gifting a prolonged kiss to the crown of your unusually tamed head. He seemed almost more contented than you were with todays turn of events, and never had anyone ever made you feel so, so accomplished.
“As fucking gorgeous as you look right now, how about you go get changed, yeah? I’m taking you to dinner tonight. Seems we’ve got some celebrating to do, superstar.” His muffled, wet whispers demanded the attention of every hair on your body as goosebumps began spreading like wildfire. A kiss behind the curve of your ear to the typically untouched spot made you want to sing out like the tabernacle choir.

Title : Just Married
Warning : Curse words, violence . Personalised fic , requested.
Request
Basically Winter soldier/avenger Bucky falls in love with  one of the richest business men in the world spoiled daughter (me) duh 😂 , who was destined for a more socialite match, such as slick family friend(name of your choosing) they still get married against the wishes her friends and family and go to Europe for their honeymoon. Unfortunately for them, her parents send her ex-boyfriend (name of your choosing) to break up the happy marriage.Although they're some scenes from the movie i want them to be included if you don't mind?
Author’s Note : It was done for a while but tumblr wouldn’t let me post it. This fic is based on a movie Just Married, i hope you like it ! As always gifs are not mine, they are all of Google.
Tumblr media
Sitting at the airport waiting for their flight Mara leaned her head on Bucky’s shoulder and allowed her mind to flash back from now to the moment they met. James Buchanan Barnes was a working-class man and Mara upper-class woman, they met when James accidentally hit Mara with a football. It seemed like from the very start the world was against them, Mara’s family opposed them claiming James was not the right man for Mara but despite it in few short months they got married.
“Passports please.”
Both James and Mara took out their passports and gave them to the man working at the customs control. ” Are you leaving with any fruit or vegetables over 10000 dollars?”
Smirking up at the man Mara replied in a serious tone.” No. No, but my husband does have two pounds of hash hidden in his rectum.”
Tumblr media
That joke resulted in James having a full body check or as he put it when he was finally allowed to board limping ‘the first sex that he had on his honeymoon was with a man named Santino’ which made Mara chuckle.
Thinking back Mara knew she wasn’t being fully honest with James, as she didn’t tell James that she slept with Mark Prentiss, a childhood friend and her family’s friend, after she and James had started dating, but she wasn’t the only one with a secret, James didn’t tell Mara that he accidentally killed her dog.
They flue to Europe for their honeymoon, and even attempted to consummate their marriage by joining the mile high club, but failed rather publicly. When they arrived at their classy hotel at the foot of the Alps they found that Mark had sent them a bottle of cognac “with love”, while James’s friend Sam had sent them a Thunderstruck A-200 sex toy.
Stupidly James has tried to force the toy’s American plug into the European outlet and managed to shut down the entire village’s electricity. After a heated argument with the hotel owner James and Mara had to leave the hotel and pay a large bill to repair the power.
As they were trying to find another hotel they crashed their undersized car into a snowbank, and got stuck until daylight and once again were unable to consummate their marriage. Fortunately they make their way to Venice, and stay at a pansion recommended by Mark’s father. The pansion turns out to be a wreck, but they tried to make the best of it but decide to check out when a cockroach crawls over James when they tried to have sex.
Thank’s to Mara’s father’s financial help they manage to secure a far better Venetian hotel. After checking in Mara and James decide to go and explore but after a short period of time James got bored with it and left Mara, so he could get to a bar and watch sports. On her way to the hotel Mara runs into Mark, who is staying at their hotel on business.
Upon returning to her room she initiated a conversation with James in which he revealed that he accidentally killed her dog, and she revealed she slept with Mark. After the confession both of them storm out of the hotel and each go their way. James went back to the bar, where he met an American tourist Wendy, and Mara went sightseeing, where Mark followed her.
In the bar Wendy flirts and dances with James, who after he finds out that she wants to have sex with him escapes through a bathroom window. He returns to the hotel, only to learn from the maître d’ that Mara has gone out with Mark for the evening. James in his state decided to return to the bar, where Wendy joins him again. After a while James finds himself in his hotel room with a half naked Wendy who upon entering took her entire top of, as she tried to have sex with him James blurted out that he is married and is on his honeymoon, which prompts the girl to leave.
On the other side of the city Mara got drunk so Mark takes her back to the hotel, and kisses her at the entrance, after which she slaps him and reminds him that she’s on her honeymoon but all James sees from the balcony is a kiss but not the slap.
Tumblr media
“You slut!” James yelled out as Mara entered their room.
“Excuse me?!”
“You let him put his tongue down your throat, i saw it out the window!” James threw a glass he was holding, breaking it on a wall. Keeping her voice as calm as possible Mara replied.” Did you see me slap him, then?”
“Ah, don’t give me that. Some part of you wants him. Just say it!”
“Fine,I’m not gonna lie anymore. Certain things would be easier given his background. And a small part of me thought that i wanted it once, a very small part.” As she said it Mara walked past by James as he continued talking.
”Why would you invite him on our honeymoon?”
“I didn’t invite him, i don’t know how he found us.” Mara said but James wasn’t pleased with her answer, thou she didn’t pay much attention to it as she saw a flash of red on a chair next to their bed.”Oh yeah, oh maybe it was magic. Peter is a warlock.”
She got closer and picked it up to inspect it. A woman’s bra. A red woman’s bra. She turned towards James still holding the bra. At the site of the bra James temper calmed, he gestured towards the bra and with his voice cracking said.
”That’s yours.” The audacity! Thought Mara as she scoffed and hit him with the bra.” Yeah, sure. It matches perfect with my call girl panties!”
“Okay, i met woman at a bar. Nothing happened.”
Tumblr media
“You picked up a total stranger at a bar, brought her to back our honeymoon suit and took of her disgusting red bra!”
“Nothing happened, i swear.”
“No, no, no, the bra just jumped of her naked breasts.” Said Mara and threw the bra at him, and moved passed him towards the table.
“Mara…”
“You sit there and make me feel guilty of a kiss. A kiss i didn’t want in the first place!’ After those words the anger in Bucky returned.“Don’t tell me you didn’t want it.You wanted it. I could see from the balcony, you wanted it!”
Enraged without a thought Mara grabbed an object closest to her and threw it at James, the object happen to be a pretty large ashtray and it landed right on James’s face knocking him down to the ground. As it hit him, Mara grasped her face with her hands realizing what she did.
“I’m sorry.Oh my God.’’ She approached him and knelt next to him. “Son of a beatch! My scull is on fire!” As she went to access the damage a knock was heard. ” Who is it?”
“Room service.”
Mara rose from the floor and opened the door, On the other side was Mark,as soon as she saw him she tried to choose the door in his was telling him to leave, but he wouldn’t budge.” No, listen. I’m leaving, last chance. Come with me to Seattle.”
Tumblr media
“Hello, Mark! So glad you could join us. Welcome to the honeymoon from hell.” James rose up from the ground and was holding a fire poker, As Mark saw the fire poker in James’s hands he hid behind Mara who spread out her hands protecting Mark.
” What are you doing, James?”
Tumblr media
”I think it’s time for Mark and i to tango!” Using the fire poker James broke a lamp in front of him, Mara moved away from Mark towards the wall protecting herself from the glass shards.
“See you have no future with this lunatic!” Yelled out Mark glaring at James.
”Shut up, Mark! Buck, you’re acting like a crazy person!”
“Maybe it’s cuz i just got hit in a head with a ten pound ashtray!”
“I gotta warn you, Barnes. I studied karate with a Chinese grand master.”
“Yeah, well i hope he showed ya, how to put a fire poker out of your ass!”
“James. Put the poker down.” Mara gestured towards the poker, while Mark took that to his advantage, pushing Mara in front of James as he bolted out of the room, James following right behind.
As he descended down the stairs he ordered the receptionist to phone the police. As he reached the lobby James swung the fire poker repeatedly trying to hit Mark.
“You sat at our wedding! You heard us take our wows! You still had the nerve to show up on our honeymoon, and try to have sex with my wife!”
That fight was what led them to jail, still without consummating their marriage. It was Mark that bailed them out of jail, but the damage was already done, both James and Mara decided to return home alone. Right after they returned Mara moved out of their apartment and moved back to her parents home.
James was crushed by her choice, he loved his wife and wanted her back, so he made a decision to try, one last time to win back the woman he loves. After talking to his mother who encourages him to try, James attempted to see Mara on her family’s estate, his friend Sam decides to join him for support but even after he rammed his car into the gate remains unsuccessful. Once last time. If she doesn’t want me, than I’ll leave.
“Listen Yuan, Willie, whoever else is listening. You don’t want me to be with Mara and i can’t change that. In ten, twenty, forty years. i don’t know who we’re gonna be. I don’t know if I’m ever gonna be able to give her all of this. There are a million things that i don’t know. But there is one thing that i do. And that’s that i love Mara. And i am going to love her day in and day out for the rest of my life. Now will you please…please…open the gate so i can tell that to my wife.”
James brokenhearted with tears in his eyes slumps against the side of his car defeat. She doesn’t want me. It’s over. Just as it seemed that all hope is lost the gate opens and James takes off running. After hearing the speech Mara opened the gate herself, her father stared at her and all she said was that she loves him.
“Then go get him.” Her father said and Mara gave him a hug before taking of herself towards James, they both keep running until they meet outside of her house. They stopped and said hi to each other. Bucky was the first one to speak.
“I’m sorry.”
“Me too.”
“I miss you.”
“I miss you too.”
Tumblr media
“I miss wreaking airplane bathrooms with you.”
“I miss sleeping with you inside a snowball.”
“Torching hotels in Europe.”
“I miss doing time in prison with you.”
“Do you wanna try to?”
Tumblr media
“Definitely.”

Psycho A-Go-Go
Before he made Carnival Magic, Al Adamson made movies like this.
We open on a crotch.  A mediocre singer sings a mediocre song, while a couple of fringe-bedecked go-go dancers gyrate behind her.  This only just barely has anything to do with the plot, but we’ll be treated to a couple of recurrences of it.
Tumblr media
When the actual movie starts, it’s with some guys in surgical scrubs committing a jewel heist.  A policeman catches up with them, and they have to stash their loot in the back of a pickup truck – before they can retrieve it, the truck’s owner returns and drives off.  This guy turns out to be Dave Clarke, husband of the singer from the opening.  He never notices his expensive cargo, but it’s found later by his six-year-old daughter Nancy, who decides it’s pirate treasure and hides it in her Christie Minstrel doll.  The thieves search Clarke’s house and when they find nothing there, they decide to pry the truth out of him by going after his wife and daughter.  If only Clarke had any truth to tell them!
You know how I’ve mentioned that all the men in these movies look exactly alike?  Psycho A-Go-Go is a particularly egregious offender.  The thieves all look alike, except for the one who gets shot, who I was prepared to refer to as Scowling Hemsworth Brother, and the guy in charge, who has inexplicably drawn a mustache and goatee on himself with a sharpie marker.  Worse, all these guys also look just like Clarke!  Why is this?  Is it the haircut?  They all have dark hair in that 60’s Man Haircut.  Eventually I figured out that one was The Rapey One and another was The One Who Kinda Looks Like Tom Hanks In Big, but by then the movie was two thirds over. There’s also a couple of cops who were cast in the same mold.
The same thing goes on with the women in the movie. There’s an abundance of dark beehive hairdos over identical faces.  The bad guy’s moll (whose name I never caught, so I shall call her Molly), Mrs. Clarke, the murdered secretary, elevator woman, and the nightclub singer all look exactly the same… to the point where I was trying to figure out if the singer were the same person as Molly but then the movie blindsided me with the revelation that she was actually Mrs. Clarke!  I only managed to tell them apart when they were all in different rooms.
Maybe it’s the soft focus.  The whole movie is in soft focus and maybe it obscures the facial features?  It’s not very well-lit either.  There’s the inevitable shitty day-for-night, which I think just gives up at the end and decides the sun is rising, and a climactic car chase so dark all you can see are headlights, but the rest is kinda muddy too.  A lot of shots are also from across a room, and appear to just show a bunch of identical men in identical suits.  Maybe the casting director had a secret cloning lab.  I don’t know.  I just don’t know.
Tumblr media
So much for what the movie looks like. Let’s talk about what happens in it. There’s a surprising amount that’s trying to go on in Psycho A-Go-Go.  Of course there’s the main plot where the bad guys are trying to get the diamonds back but nobody knows where they are except for Nancy, whom they never think of asking. There’s actually one nice little moment in this, when Nancy tells Rapey Guy she’ll give him her treasure if he’ll promise not to hurt her mother.  He ignores her, because he thinks a six-year-old girl’s treasure is probably just a bunch of those rings you used to get at the dentist.  He doesn’t realize his mistake until the Christie Minstrel doll is dropped and broken open during the chase, and then it’s too late. I think this is supposed to be ironic but it doesn’t quite get there.
Aside from that, there’s a number of other plotlines. Molly is supposed to be Sharpie Mustache’s girlfriend, but she’s cheating on him with Guy Who Looks Like Tom Hanks, and Sharpie Mustache gets more suspicious of and more violent towards them as the movie goes on.  Dave’s brother-in-law is one of the cops investigating the robbery, and manages to swoop in at the end to save the day.  Rapey Guy keeps wandering off to brutalize women, which is never really dealt with, and there’s also the Mute Thug who makes friends with Nancy.  All of this is cliché and none of it is really interesting.  Scenes of multiple identical guys talking are downright boring – how are we supposed to care when we can’t even tell which are the good guys and which the bad?
Tumblr media
I will say, though, that at least Psycho-A-Go-Go sets everything up.  Hiding the diamonds in the doll never really gets the payoff it deserves, but other stuff works.  It’s a bit too much of a coincidence that Dave’s brother-in-law is the detective on the case, but it does explain how the cops knew where to go and prevents their arrival being a deus ex machina – if only all these men didn’t look alike, so we could tell which one just got shot.  The murders Rapey Guy commits are almost entirely gratuitous, but they do make us feel that Mrs. Clarke is truly in danger when he gets his hands on her.
There is a lot of brutality against women that goes on here.  Sharpie Mustache slaps Molly around a lot, and Rapey Guy just goes around committing felonies for fun.  All he needed from the office at the construction company was Dave’s name and address, but he stabbed the secretary for no reason.  She didn’t even see him there.  All he needed from the redhead was to know where Mrs. Clarke was, but he rapes and strangles her – possibly not in that order.  These two incidents are never brought up again, not even in a police context.  Nobody in the movie gives a shit about these women, and apparently Al Adamson, who also wrote the script, didn’t either.  They’re nothing to him but foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
I think Rapey Guy may be the ‘Psycho’ referenced in the title, but if so that’s a little strange because the movie doesn’t present him as the main villain.  Sharpie Mustache is the criminal mastermind, and while we do see him losing control of his henchmen, he’s still the one who’s giving the orders.  I guess with him dead there’s nobody to rein in Rapey Guy anymore, but I don’t think he ever actually tried to.
Psycho-A-Go-Go isn’t very clear about who its hero is, either. It can’t be Dave, the man whose family is in danger, because in the fine tradition of shitty movie non-heroes, he of course doesn’t do anything.  He spends the middle part of the film tied to a chair in his own living room, and at the climax he hits his head on a rock and just lies there while his brother-in-law the cop shoots Rapey Guy instead.  So is Officer Brother-in-Law the hero?  He can’t be, because we barely see him.  He and Dave talk very briefly about the case at the nightclub, and then he goes to Dave’s house after his wife asks him to check up on the family, who aren’t answering the doorbell or phone.
I really don’t think Psycho-A-Go-Go is trying to be a movie with something to say, either.  I mean, yeah, it’s another film in which crime doesn’t pay at least partly because the criminals ultimately turn on each other, but really it’s just a lot of scenes of people being horrible in an attempt to shock and thrill the audience.  Nobody really grows.  This is the sort of movie that seems tailor-made for that hoary old arc about the man who doesn’t realize how important his family is to him until they’re in danger, but they don’t even have that.  Dave’s domestic tranquility is shattered, and then restored. I guess Molly and The Guy Who Looks Like Tom Hanks grow a little, since they decide to get out of the whole ‘crime’ thing, but in any reasonable universe they both ended up in jail.
When I compare this film to Carnival Magic, the two movies don’t have a whole lot in common.  Carnival Magic hid its dark content under a veneer of cheerful family fun, and in a way Psycho-A-Go-Go does the same thing – Dave’s happy family are blissfully unaware of the underworld they’re about to be sucked into, and the diamonds are hidden inside the apparently harmless Christie Minstrel doll.  Psycho-A-Go-Go is much more tonally consistent, since when we meet the happy family we already know that horrible things are going to happen to them, and it feels like the film-makers’ hearts were way more in it than they were in Carnival Magic.  That’s somewhat troubling when we consider the difference in content.
If you want to ask me which movie is better, I don’t know how to answer you.  Carnival Magic looks better, with a crisper picture and characters who don’t all look the same, but it’s a weird, messy, disjointed film that isn’t sure what it’s plot is.  Psycho-A-Go-Go looks like ass, and it’s also weird and messy and not sure what we’re supposed to be focused on, but everything that happens is unified by the common thread of the diamonds, and we’re not switching from domestic violence to talking monkey antics and back again.    I’d still rather watch either of them again than Cry Wilderness, but man… this one left just a bad aftertaste.  Can’t I just watch My Neighbour Totoro for the rest of my life?

The right has been trying to sell Americans on consumption-based standards of freedom for years. Indeed, the CEA’s report on the baleful impact of socialism makes much more sense when one remembers that the current head of the agency is Kevin Hassett, a longtime fixture at the American Enterprise Institute, one of the foremost think tanks of the American conservative movement. (Hassett’s also the coauthor, with rabid supply-sider James Glassman, of one of the most ridiculous books of all time, 1999’s Dow 36,000.) This is the level of persuasion one expects from a person whose career has largely been devoted to persuading rich people to subsidize the production of dubious research praising the system that allowed them to get rich.
These think tanks specialize in that sort of “me or your lying eyes” approach to selling Americans on American-style capitalism (which you’d think, if it were working correctly, wouldn’t need so much marketing help). That’s why the Heritage Foundation, perhaps the most influential conservative think tank, periodically tells us that there’s no real poverty in America—or at least that while there might be some, it is, all in all, pretty pleasant poverty—in reports with titles like 2011’s “Air Conditioning, Cable TV, and an Xbox: What is Poverty in the United States Today?”
…All of these reports—and scores more pieces of commentary making the exact same arguments and citing the exact same figures—were authored or co-authored by Robert Rector, who has been shaping conservative arguments on poverty since joining the Heritage Foundation in 1984. He’s been called the “intellectual god-father” of the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act, also known as welfare reform. Considering his part in that triumph of bipartisanship, which really did, as Bill Clinton promised, “end welfare as we know it,” it’s clear why Rector is so invested in the argument that to be poor in twenty-first century America is a cakewalk—he’s responsible for creating a whole new population of poor people.
…The tendency for American capitalism to justify itself by the gadgets it is capable of making affordable is an old one. It was the basis of the notorious 1959 “kitchen debate” between Vice President Richard Nixon and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, which took place at an exhibition of American technological wizardry set up in the heart of Moscow. The American pavilion featured the latest in American time-saving household appliances, and the debate almost immediately took on a legendary character in the United States, where we told ourselves that Soviet citizens were entranced by our washing machines and Polaroid cameras. The Americans faked the automated kitchen, of course—there was a guy behind a two-way mirror making the proto-Roomba move and turning on the “automated” dishwasher, Joe Maxwell, one of the industrial designers responsible for the kitchen, told Gizmodo decades later—as part of the mission was to convince the Russians that things being marketed to middle-class Americans, including things that were years away from any sort of commercial viability, were commonplace in homes across the country. (The Soviet exhibition in the United States, meanwhile, featured a modest three-room apartment. And Sputnik.) While the Soviets were suitably impressed with the quality of our kitchen appliances, this message left in the exhibition’s visitors’ book seems pertinent: “A shortcoming: you show what you produce, but you do not show what you produce it with.”
At the time, the (real, non-automated) dishwashers would have been manufactured in the United States, to be sold to middle-class families to help wives more efficiently carry out their unpaid domestic labor while their husbands were at work manufacturing dishwashers. The government subsidized the construction and (for white families) debt-financed purchasing of large suburban homes so that there would be somewhere to put all the dishwashers—and so that the people who built homes would have enough homes to build to afford their own dishwashers and large suburban homes. This was called “capitalism.” (The Council of Economic Advisers report on socialism quotes the late economist Sherwin Rosen’s dismissive description of Sweden as a place where “a large fraction of women work in the public sector to take care of the children of other women who work in the public sector to care for the parents of the women who are looking after their children.” Just think of all the surplus labor going to waste caring for people instead of being expropriated by the owners of capital!)
Eventually, the sort of people who own household appliance companies saw the return on their investments begin to stall out, due to inflation and labor power, so that system was phased out in favor of one in which many people still got large, debt-financed homes, but there were fewer dishwasher manufacturing jobs. The dishwashers got a lot cheaper, though, to help the new arrangements seem more palatable.
Yet still, despite the dirt cheap vacuums and flat-screen TVs, something seems wrong. People keep complaining about “income inequality” and writing books about how grindingly difficult it is for an alarmingly large number of Americans to get by.
Conservatives seem to have noticed that their primary argument—why do you feel so poor when you have such a large TV?—has had trouble making inroads among people who actually experience life in the United States and who don’t work within the think tank–lobbying firm–Council of Economic Advisers circuit. They’ve noticed, too, that while TVs, for example, are quite cheap, things essential to live—and things essential to “get ahead” in the United States—are only becoming more expensive.
The American Enterprise Institute even produced a chart illustrating the problem. It shows the prices of things like new cars, clothing, toys, and TVs staying steady or dramatically falling relative to the inflation rate, while food, housing, child care, and—especially—medical care skyrocket in price. If you want an explanation of why non-wealthy Americans feel so stretched thin even in a time of supposed abundance, there it is. They can afford to get their kids toys but not bachelor’s degrees.
…Ex–Cold Warriors still fondly recall the kitchen debate. They still chuckle at the crummy cars and televisions the Soviet citizenry had to endure as Americans innovated cruise control and Betamax tapes. But during the periods when life was stable in the Soviet Union, its people were reasonably satisfied. The years since the end of Communism, on the other hand, have been devastating to a generation of Russians. As Masha Gessen wrote for The New York Review of Books in 2014:
In the seventeen years between 1992 and 2009, the Russian population declined by almost seven million people, or nearly 5 percent—a rate of loss unheard of in Europe since World War II. Moreover, much of this appears to be caused by rising mortality. By the mid-1990s, the average St. Petersburg man lived for seven fewer years than he did at the end of the Communist period; in Moscow, the dip was even greater, with death coming nearly eight years sooner.
Many of those deaths were violent or self-imposed. Deaths from injuries and poisoning are five times higher in Russia than in Western Europe. “We would never expect to find premature mortality on the Russian scale in a society with Russia’s present income and educational profiles and typically Western readings on trust, happiness, radius of voluntary association, and other factors adduced to represent social capital,” the economist Nicholas Eberstadt writes. In her review of scholars’ attempts to explain the story of the Russian death rate, Gessen wonders if the problem might be a sort of inherited cultural despair—whether “Russians are dying for lack of hope.”
Millions of former Soviet citizens now have access to the consumer bounty Americans lorded over them during the Cold War. It has not helped them adapt to life without a safety net. However often those notoriously unreliable Lada cars might have broken down, an inferior product line drove many fewer Russians to drink themselves to death than economic shock therapy did.
The year after Gessen wrote that piece, Princeton economists Anne Case and Angus Deaton published their paper showing that, after declining for decades, the mortality rate for middle-aged white Americans had been steadily climbing between 1999 and 2013. They updated their report in 2017, with data showing that non-college-educated white American men were increasingly dying of “diseases of despair,” meaning mainly drug and alcohol abuse and suicide.
The connecting thread in both the Russian and American cases seems to be decline in living standards—not absolute deprivation. By historical and international standards, there are much worse things to be than a member of the stagnant or declining middle class in America, or even post-Soviet Russia—nearly everyone we’re talking about probably has televisions and refrigerators among other cheaply produced pieces of gadgetry. But people seem to choose to obliterate themselves not when their current situation is dire, but when there is no apparent path to a better one.
Non-college-educated white American men are also, we’re told, President Trump’s base. His Council of Economic Advisers would like them to be grateful for all the room our large country has provided for them to park their trucks.

Key, meet car.
Pairing: Daveed x reader
Words: 1779 (I’m sorely tempted to take away three OR add ten)
Note: This was going to be a fill for a VERY different prompt, but I glanced at a prompt list and noticed this one: ‘Person A gets caught keying person B’s car’ and decided to go for it.
This is setting up for a longer, more intricate story, so consider this part 1 of god knows how many.
Also, I suck at titles...
Warnings: None, except an ungodly amount of unnecessary backstory… Sorry.
Your boss had been a grade A asshole all day, giving you the next task before the previous one was finished. Around 3 o’clock, you made your way to the break room for a cup of coffee. You stopped outside the door when you heard your name. “Y/N? I mean, she’s got a pretty face,” one had said. “Yeah, but would you fuck her?” you heard another say. “Pft, no. A pretty face doesn’t excuse the rest of her. Linda, on the other hand? I’d give her-” You left, suddenly not in the mood for coffee anymore. When you got back to your desk, your boss had left yet another pile of work for you, accompanied by a note. ‘These need to be entered in the system, thanks, sweetheart’
‘Fuck you, asshole,’ you thought, before doing the work anyway.
After work, you still needed to go grocery shopping. While there, another customer looked at you weird for having three types of chocolate and a tub of ice cream in your basket. Normally you weren’t one to care, but something about their look had set you off, making you feel insecure. You were determined not to let it get to you, but then you heard them whispering to their companion. You couldn’t make out all the words, but chocolate was definitely in there. You shot both of them a dirty look and went to pay. Once your groceries were bagged and you got into the car, your eyes filled with tears.
“Don’t give them the satisfaction of your tears, Y/N,” you told yourself. “You’re never seeing those shits again, you shouldn’t care.” You wiped away your tears, started the car and drove home.
As you drove home, your eyes kept going foggy when you thought about the day you’d had. You took extra care to not cause accidents, but you had to admit it was quite cathartic to yell at the traffic lights and slow drivers in front of you.
By the time you got home, you’d gone from being sad about how the day went, to being angry. Angry at your boss, your coworkers, the fuckers at the store, the other people and cars on the street and as you got closer to your house, angry at the owner of the car in front of it. There, directly in front of your door, was a car, parked neatly by the curb. You glanced along the street, not seeing another spot. You checked your mirrors, but again, no space to park. You slowly drove around the block, cursing the car owner when the one spot available meant you had to walk at least five minutes to reach your house. You parked anyway, knowing the ice cream you were planning to eat for dinner was probably half melted already.
Five minutes later you approached your house, your anger close to the surface. When you spotted the offending car, you made a split decision. You took out your keys, making sure not to drop the bag of groceries, picked out the sharpest one and ran it along the side of the car. With a satisfying screech, the key made a long white line in the dark blue of the paint job.
“What the FUCK are you doing to my car!?” You quickly turned around and saw a man approaching you. “Oh shit,” you mumbled, anger gone and being replaced by apprehension. The man had reached you and lightly pushed you out of the way, seemingly aware his big muscles could hurt you badly. You looked at him, but his focus was on the car. “What the fuck! What’d you do that for!” He turned to you, indignation clear on his face.
“You- I-,” you stammered, looking everywhere but the man in front of you. “I, you, what?”
“You parked in front of my house,” you answered lamely. “So you key my fucking car?!” The tears that had left in the face of anger returned, filling your eyes quickly. “I’ve had a shit day, okay?” you cried. “Work sucked, shopping sucked, my drive home sucked and your car is in front of my house! I had to walk five minutes to get here after parking two blocks down, my ice cream’s melted, my feet hurt and I'm so done with everything right now, and your goddamn car is in front of my HOUSE!”
Even though the tears had fallen, you looked up at the man in anger. He looked down at you, seemingly shocked that instead of an apology, you had started yelling at him. He took a deep breath and looked at the white line on his car. He turned to you and calmly said “lady, I’m sorry you had a shitty day, but you keyed my car. I’ll need your contact info so that you can pay for that. I already know where you live, so there’s no point in arguing with me about it.”
It was your turn to be shocked. You really hadn’t expected him to react as calm and logical as he did. You wanted to yell at him some more, felt the anger and sadness fade when you did so. You didn’t want to yell at someone as calm as he was, though. You sighed, ran your hand through your hair and pulled out a couple of strands when the keyring got stuck. “Fuck!” you yelled, not at the man, but at the situation as a whole. Annoyingly, the tears returned. You turned your back to the man and looked at the sky, willing the tears back into their ducts. Once you had a handle on it, you turned back to him and said “yeah, okay. Let’s go inside, I need to put this ice cream away.”
You walked up to the door and unlocked it. You turned to look at the man, who was looking between his car and you in the door opening. You nodded towards the door, signaling him to follow you. The man walked to you and inside your house.
After you put the ice cream and the rest of the groceries away, you turned back to the man. He was standing in the living room, looking at the pictures of your family and friends you’d hung up.
“So, what do you need?”
“Huh? Need?” he asked, turning to you.
“Yes, need. The information? What exactly do you need?”
“Right! Uhm, probably your name and phone number. I’ve got your address,” he said with a nervous laugh.
You took some time to really look at him. His curls were wound tight, his facial hair neatly trimmed and his smile was wide. His arms, which you’d previously only half noticed, were thick with muscles, as was his chest, which was hidden inside a shirt that said ‘Oaklandish’. You could only imagine the rest of his body and shook your head when you caught yourself doing exactly that. He was tall, taller than you by a good bit. You heard a cough and quickly flicked your eyes back to his. He was looking at you with a small smile on his full lips, knowing he caught you staring. You could feel your cheeks heating and quickly turned back to the kitchen.
“Y/N,” you said. “My name’s Y/N Y/L/N. D’you… Uhm. You want some coffee?” Not turning back to him, knowing your blush hadn’t gone down yet, you started making the coffee anyway.
“Are you sure you wanna have coffee with the guy who’s car you fucked up?”
You turned to him now and stared at him. “I didn’t ‘fuck up’ your car. It’s a scratch on your paint job, you make it sound like I went full on Lemonade on it.”
“I bet you’ve done that to some other poor sucker’s car,” the man stated.
You scoffed and said, “look- whatever your name is-, I’m sorry I keyed your car, I’ll pay for it, but I have never gone to town on one with a baseball bat.”
“Daveed,” he said, as if that was an answer to your statement.
“What?”
“My name. It’s Daveed. Or Diggs, if you feel like we’re not there yet.” A smile appeared on his face. Big, with lots of teeth, but not threatening. It was nice. It made his face light up and his eyes wrinkle and you couldn’t stop yourself from smiling back at him.
You gestured to a chair at the table and turned to get two cups for the coffee.
“I’ll also have you know that I also never keyed a car before in my life.”
“Looked pretty fucking professional from where I was standing,” Daveed said with a laugh.
You put the coffee on the table and went to grab sugar and milk. Once you sat down, Daveed started chuckling.
“What?” you asked.
“Nothing. I just didn’t think today would end like this. Yet here I am, sharing a cup of coffee with a crazy lady named Y/N.” His chuckles had grown and he started laughing, his shoulders shaking.
“I’m not cra- Whatever. You caught me on a bad day. Normally I’m not like that,” you pointed out.
“Well, let’s just say it fit with the rest of my day,” Daveed mumbled, looking down at his coffee.
“What happened?” you asked before you could stop yourself. You shook your head, adding “no, nevermind. It’s none of my business.”
“It’s okay. My girlfr- EX girlfriend I guess, lives a couple of houses down. We broke up last week and I went to get some stuff.”
“I’m sorry, man,” you said, laying your hand on his arm. “Was she there?”
“Nah, she wasn’t. The dude she’s been fucking for the last four months was, though.”
“Damn,” you whispered. “That’s rough.”
“Nearly punched him in the face. He knew we were together, y’know. Fuck, I wish I did punch him. Knock his teeth out or something,” Daveed growled.
“You can always key his car,” you joked, wanting Daveed to smile again.
“Ha! I would, but he doesn’t own one, sadly.” Daveed looked at you once again. You found yourself mesmerized by his dark eyes, but forced yourself to look away. You finished your coffee and got up.
“I’ll grab some paper and a pen, give you my contact info. Let me know when you get your car fixed and I’ll give you the money for it,” you assured him.
Daveed got up as well, following you to the living room, his eyes on the pictures on the wall again.
“Thanks,” he said distractedly. Suddenly he pointed at one of the pictures and turned to you. “You know Oak?” he asked, sounding surprised.

Once upon a night in 2016 a Homeland Security agent whisked Lucy Preston away from a bitter conversation with her sister about how the university had denied her tenure, to an industrial gray and black waiting room at Mason Industries. A man, a stranger, leaned back in a chair on the other side of the room, his eyes closed as if asleep. Short, dark hair stippled his jaw. His booted feet lounged on a glass-topped table as if he was just someone relaxing at home. She envied him his obvious ease. Why had Agent Kondo brought her there? Had she done something wrong? She fingered her locket and tried to ignore the way her nerves pinged, her stomach churned, and her knee wanted to jiggle up and down. OK, so maybe she had an unpaid campus parking ticket lying in the console of her car, but— “Are you asleep?”
In her head, she’d already dubbed the man in the jeans and boots Sleepy. “No, ma’am,” Sleepy said.
“Oh. Okay, good. This is Connor Mason’s company? Do you know why we’re here?”
“No idea, ma’am.”
“You know, we're pretty much the same age, so you can just stop calling me ma'am.”
Sleepy’s eyes opened, beaming all their blues at her.
Lucy blinked. Oh, she thought. Maybe she’d have to reconsider that nickname.
His mouth arced in a slow, lopsided smile. Lucy inhaled sharply. Oh, she thought again.
The first time she saw him it was on a computer screen. Coal-dark hair, green eyes, and a slender, unsmiling mouth. She shivered but could not look away.
“Garcia Flynn, ex-NSA asset in Eastern Europe,” Agent Christopher said.
“Ex since when?” Wyatt asked.
“Since he killed his wife and child and went off the grid. That was a year ago. We thought he was holed up in Chechnya, but apparently not.”
What kind of man murdered his wife and child?
It was with the flaming skeleton of the Hindenburg dying next to them, pandemonium and screams puncturing the night air, that she stood with Garcia Flynn for the first time. He loomed out of the darkness, a tall creature wreathed in shadow.
“It’s time we talked,” he said, and the charcoal-smudge impression in front of Lucy resolved into a man. A tower of a man holding a gun trained in her direction. She had to tilt her chin up to meet his blistering gaze, while he tipped his down. Firelight burnished his hair red. The two-dimensional image Agent Christopher had shown her had not prepared her for the weight and vibrancy of Flynn’s presence. “You need to understand who and what we’re dealing with,” he said. His eyes traced her face as if seeking an answer to a question she didn’t know how to ask yet.
His voice, she knew it—had heard it ring out across the barren landscape of her dreams, even if she had never met its owner before. The rough timbre of his speech and the way he elongated his A’s—all of that was familiar to her in a way that defied understanding. “I understand that you’re a psychopath trying to burn everything to the ground,” she said, ashamed at the tremor in her voice.
“Well, that depends on your point of view, Lucy.” Her name slipped from his lips like a caress—the murmur of a thumb stroked over the top of her hand.
Babylon burned all around them, and this man, this stranger with the voice and the eyes she knew somehow— This man was responsible. Terrorist, they called him. Danger, her mind whispered, here there be dragons. Ignoring the klaxon that blared in her head, shoving aside all common sense and logic, Lucy stepped closer to him. “How do you know my name?”
“I know everything about you.”
He held open a book, a journal, and showed her pages filled with her own handwriting. Of course she recognized her own penmanship, but how could that be, when she possessed no memory of writing the words? Impossible, and yet… Hadn’t she journeyed on a ship back through time?
“Do you believe in fate?” Robert Todd Lincoln asked her at a train station in 1865. Did she?
Flynn found her there, fresh from her encounter with Lincoln. Lincoln, upright and handsome in his dress blues. Lincoln, with the soft gleam in his eyes.
In daylight Flynn was all formidable lines and stern angles, his hands folded stiffly behind his back. His nose was a touch too long; his mouth sat tense and unforgiving. Only a few feet separated them as she cursed him for being the reason for her sister’s disappearance.
He didn’t hold her there with a gun this time. No, this time he pinned her with only the electric flare of his eyes. He arrested her. The elegant score of his eyebrows beneath his creased forehead captivated her in a way it should not as he threw around words like Rittenhouse, war, and future.
If there was any softness in this man, her eyes could not find it.
But her ears heard it every time he uttered her name.
“Lucy, one day you are going to help me,” he said and wrapped the sound of her name in that silken familiarity. A wave of warmth, wholly unwanted, cascaded over her as if Flynn had touched her.
She wanted him to touch her.
Beyond all logic and reason, in defiance of all the sense her mother had tried to instill in her, Lucy wanted to touch Flynn, this strange man with phantoms and future trajectories and vengeance in his eyes. She could cut herself on the dagger point of his lips and not care that she bled. The skin on her palms craved the harsh geometry of his face, so she argued twice as hard, her tone strident and brutal, teeth snapping, antagonizing Flynn even as she questioned the wisdom of doing so.
His large hand closed hard around the fine bones of her wrist, light catching on the gold ring that encircled his fourth finger. Thus manacled, Lucy fought back the tears of humiliation that suddenly clouded her vision.
If there was any softness in this man, her eyes could not find it.
In 1865 Lucy flirted her way into an invitation to Ford’s Theater with Robert Todd Lincoln. She donned a white gown sprinkled with silvery blue flowers, and when she came out from behind the changing screen she watched Wyatt’s lips echo that same half-smile from the night they met. Strands of his hair slashed down across his forehead, and her fingers twitched with the traitorous impulse to push them back.
Flynn shot Abraham Lincoln in front of her that night; his blood christened her dress in a macabre series of Rorschach blots.
Blood brutalized her dress.
Blood marked her skin.
Blood thrummed thick and fast in her ears.
“I decided I was gonna let it happen. But then I called out to warn him. It was too late. It's one thing to talk about history like this abstract thing. But when the man gets shot right in front of you… I tried,” she said in an effort to convince herself she had done her utmost to save Abraham Lincoln’s life. The words offered her no solace as she recounted her tale to Rufus and Wyatt in the half-dark interior of the Lifeboat. Lucy’s throat closed up and she found she couldn’t continue. Wordless and heavy, she floundered in a vast sea of guilt and grief.
Until Wyatt’s hand curled over hers, knuckles resting on her blood-stiffened clothing.
In the welcome pressure of his hand, the steady warmth of his gaze, and the steadfast bow of his mouth, she found an anchor.
In 1962 she listened to Wyatt dictate a telegram to send his dead wife in 2012. (Time travel—its risks, its paradoxes, all of it—raked her thoughts into hopeless knots. But the human heart and its capacity to expand, to contract, to shatter, and continue beating, well, these were timeless things.) Over the irregular click clack of the typewriter keys, Wyatt’s voice trudged on, its cadence shaky and tinged navy with sadness.
This moment, she hadn’t meant to witness it, and the guilt of intruding on her teammate’s privacy licked hot at her skin. Then he turned around and caught her watching him; he donned his armor, made a joke and strode away from her. But his eyes shone too bright; his head hung too low, and he had no other easy quip or crooked smile to offer her. All his other masks fell away while anguish sheathed his features like a second skin, and she could not let him leave.
“Wyatt.”
“I know what you’re going to say.”
“No, you don’t. Look. I understand. I would do anything to get my sister back.”
“Look, I’m sorry about before. I get it’s your job, keeping history the way it’s meant to be. I don’t believe in ‘meant to be,’ though, or fate, or anything like that, and if you knew how Jess died...You would know there’s no such thing. It’s all just dumb luck and random chance. It’s just a roll of the dice.”
Wyatt’s voice reverberated with old pain; she recognized it. With her sister’s loss still a fresh injury, she felt a certain kinship with him.
That was when Lucy began to believe in ghosts.
1836 found Lucy and her team chasing Flynn to the Alamo Mission in what was then still Mexico. Hundreds would die there. Hundreds of souls burned white-hot and true, souls just like hers or Rufus’ or Wyatt’s, then flickered, before they were finally snuffed out. It didn’t get easier, riding a metal bucket of bolts and vibrations through history to witness life’s end over and over again and knowing she shouldn’t do much, if anything at all, to alter history’s tragic outcomes. Contemplating these ethical dilemmas for too long would lead, she knew with a bone-deep certainty, to insanity.
There in 1836, while the dry wind flicked sandy soil into her skirts, Lucy peeled back more of the mysteries that lay behind Wyatt’s blue eyes. Six men—his men—all soldiers like him, had died so he could complete his mission and carry out crucial intelligence. She overheard him confess this to Colonel Bowie. Yet another private moment she shouldn’t have witnessed, though honesty made her admit, if only to herself, that she didn’t regret it. Couldn’t regret it. Because she wanted to know Master Sergeant Wyatt Logan, and every piece of his history she learned was a dot in the Pointillist painting that would eventually reveal his complete image.
Fine grains of soil clung to Lucy’s skin as musket and rifle fire thundered around her. Until recently, war had seemed an abstract entity, a mirage shimmering hot in the distance: something fought in distant lands or at least distant times. Now, though, war was this, a man who could not forget:
“I'm not going,” Wyatt said.
“What? No. What do you mean?” “You don't need me. They're getting rid of me anyway, right?”
Lucy looked at him in horror. “You can't stay here. Everybody dies.”
“No, I know. I can't leave good men like this, not again.”
Wyatt Logan was a good man, too; he acted as her sword and her shield and Lucy would not leave him behind to perish with everyone else left at the Alamo Mission. “No. No, Wyatt.”
“What difference does it make? Jessica, everyone I care about is gone. Let me do one good thing. Let me buy you the time to get out.”
Jessica. He was so mired in his own grief and memories that he had called her by another woman’s name.
“What about us? We're counting on you,” Lucy said, desperate to convince him.
“The next guy's gonna handle it.”
“I don't want anybody else. Look, I trust you. You are the one that I trust. Rufus needs you. I need you. Okay?” Her lips formed the words she thought would be the right ones to persuade him. Underscoring her words, she fit her hands to his face and let their warmth and pressure guide Wyatt out of the past and forward into the present. I need you.
1934 took them to Arkansas—and Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Their love affair was doomed, Lucy knew, and seeing them together was... difficult. Their desire for each other was so stark, so vivid, that Lucy had to ignore the hot blood she felt flood her cheeks and force herself: to look at them when they spoke and to go through all the right motions to maintain her and Wyatt’s cover. Bonnie and Clyde wanted each other, and that want was almost a tangible, visible thing, a circuit of raw hunger cycling back and forth between them. Watching them was torture. Wyatt spoke up in a low, gruff rumble. He spun a tale about himself kneeling on a hill in West Texas in front of the woman he loved, with a ring box in his hand and the sunset as a witness. There was a kiss, he told them, a kiss he’d never forget. Lucy knew he told the truth; this story was his story—his and Jessica’s. It was— It was something about the way his eyes turned remote, suspended in memory, and his body grew still. Finally, when Lucy was sure she could not bear it any longer, Wyatt turned to her and said, “You remember that, honey?”
It was all she could do to stutter out a “Yeah” and hope her nervous laugh didn’t give them away to Bonnie and Clyde.
Then he kissed her, stealing her surprised breath into his lungs. His palm found a home on the curve of her cheek as if they had done this a thousand times before. Through the whirling chaos in her mind and her body Lucy reminded herself that this, this was pretend. She fought to remain academic. She fought to divorce herself from the intimacy of pressing her mouth to Wyatt’s, especially since she couldn’t even count how many months it had been since she had last shared space and breath with someone like that.
It didn’t matter that Wyatt tasted faintly of hooch and of light—of sunlight filtered through a damp forest canopy of green leaves awakening in springtime. The grains of light hair on his jaw tickled her fingertips. Lucy wanted to slide her hand into his hair and curve it around his skull. I need you so much closer.
It didn’t matter. Her fingers quivered on the hard line of his jaw. This was acting. Nothing more.
In 1780 Lucy, Rufus, and Wyatt teamed up, unbelievably, with Flynn. Crisp early-autumn air slid its cool fingers under Lucy’s wine-dark cloak while she listened to Flynn murmur to their horses as he helped them slake their thirst. “Hey, buddy.” She blinked at the gentle, slip-slide lilt in his voice.  Perhaps she’d imagined it. But, no, there it was once again as he tended the animals. Those tones, overflowing with affection and warm splashes of color, were ones she had never heard from him before.
If there was any softness in this man, her eyes could not find it.
But her ears, oh her ears, they found it.
She swallowed hard and tried to shake off her desire to curl up against that kind voice like a cat dozing in a puddle of afternoon sunlight.
“I wanted to be a cowboy growing up,” he said. Growing up. They’d all had to do it. She’d never considered, though, that Garcia Flynn had once been a child, too. Did he have nightmares when he was little? Who had stroked the dark hair from his forehead and soothed him back to sleep? His mother? His father? And what had he looked like as a little boy? Had those solemn green eyes always held so much torment? His face must have been fuller and held more softness back then….
Flynn continued speaking, tugging her from her musings as he told her about some comics he’d read as a child. Terms like “good guys” and “bad guys” fell from his lips, and Lucy silently asked, Which do you think you are—a good guy or a bad guy?
Lucy discovered she hungered for more knowledge of him. It wasn’t fair that he knew so much about her from a journal that she, or rather some version of her, had written. It added a strange, one-sided layer of intimacy to their interactions. The imbalance troubled her. This was the most open he had ever been with her. Who knew when he would slam the door shut and bolt it from the other side?  She decided to take advantage of the moment. “If we take out Rittenhouse, then what will you do?”
“Go home to my family. They'll be alive again. Let my little girl jump into my arms. Hug my wife. And then say goodbye and walk away forever.”
That he had responded at all rather than shaking off her question altogether sent a surge of shock through her. “What? You would just... you would just leave them after all that we've been through?”
“Chasing Rittenhouse, I've done horrible things... become something else. How can I bring that into my home? What kind of husband or... or a father can I be after what I've done?”
Without meaning to, Flynn had even answered the question she had not dared to ask aloud: Which do you think you are—a good guy or a bad guy?
Flynn had immolated history and stood ready to throw himself on the pyre as well simply to put his family back in the world. He didn’t intend to share a life with them; he only wanted to know they were alive. Without him.
A pang of melancholy sounded somewhere in the deep recesses of the small muscle that pumped blood through Lucy’s body. Had anyone ever loved her as much as Flynn loved his wife and daughter? Would anyone? Would she ever love someone that much?
Flynn pointed his gun at John Rittenhouse, a boy, a person whose only crime was being born to the wrong man.
There was no other choice: Lucy put herself between Flynn and the boy. Though she had no sword, she could be a shield; she would be a shield. “I’m not letting you kill a child,” she said, and that was it: She understood now that the war she and Rufus and Wyatt fought was against Rittenhouse, not Flynn, but she could not remain a bystander in that moment. She wasn’t fool enough to think she was Flynn’s conscience, but she believed— She had to believe that he still had his own conscience, buried beneath layers of silt and rock and the misery of someone who had lost everything and found that yes, he could go still go on living.
She searched his face—absorbed the lines of strain around his mouth and eyes, and the unsteadiness of his shooting arm. “You have a choice right now. We all have choices… You can go back, but not if you do this.”
It was finished, or nearly so: Ethan Cahill, her grandfather, had come through for her. For all of them. Because of his meticulous notes and records, the authorities had arrested 150 Rittenhouse members. She’d make one last trip on the Lifeboat and get her sister back. Soon she and Amy and their mother would be reunited. Life would go back to normal, and they’d be a real family, a whole family, once again. The thought should have filled Lucy with exhilaration and joy, and it did. But those emotions sat side by side with a sensation of dread as she remembered her final exchange with Flynn when he’d been arrested and dragged away to a military prison:
“No! No! I trusted you, Lucy. I trusted you with my family. I trusted you with my child!”
“I’m sorry!” she’d said, aware of how hollow the words rang even as she spoke them. She hadn’t known that Agent Christopher had followed her to her rendezvous with Flynn, but she should have. Her naivete had cost him his chance to get his family back.
“Oh, you're sorry? You're sorry? You have no idea what you've done!”
The situation had twisted so quickly, and Lucy had no power to fix it. Only minutes before, he’d handed her the journal, her journal. His lips had curved in a smile then, a real smile that wiped the harshness and rigidity from his face and replaced it with something soft and almost...vulnerable. It was so unlike the dangerous copy of a smile he usually wielded like both a weapon and a wound that Lucy had smiled back, helpless to do anything else.
No matter what paths her future might take, that smile would haunt her.
“How do you think I met your father?” Lucy’s mother said. “We both come from good, strong Rittenhouse families. And that almost makes you royalty. Sweetheart, you've made me so proud. You've made everybody so proud. You have such... such an incredible future.”
Her mother was Rittenhouse. Her father was Rittenhouse. Ergo she was Rittenhouse as well. Her mother said there was a Rittenhouse agent on the Mothership. Nothing was over. Nothing was finished.
Lucy’s stomach roiled, the sour taste of bile surging inside her mouth. Her hand clapped over her mouth as she wrenched herself away from her mother and the obscene sheen of pride singing in her opaque blue gaze. She raced upstairs to her bathroom, silently cursing her clumsiness when she stumbled on a step and went down hard, her knees and shin taking the brunt of the damage.
(Everything she and her teammates had done, every life they’d either taken or been unable to save,  every single principle Flynn had violated—all of it had been for naught.)
When Lucy made it to the bathroom the porcelain of the toilet was a cool benediction under her clammy fingertips, and she clung to it as she lost the fight with her stomach and everything she’d eaten that day poured out into the toilet bowl. She retched until she was sure nothing lingered in her stomach--nothing but a tangled skein of betrayal. Still, her body heaved, the floor unforgiving against her kneecaps. On shaky feet, she stood, the ground beneath her rolling like a boat on choppy waters.
Run, said a voice in her head. Just run. But where—and to whom? Flynn would understand her confusion and her anger; he would feed the latter until it sent fingers of flame reaching to the sky. Moreover, he would know what to do next. He would know best how to attack Rittenhouse.
But Flynn was no longer an option; he sat in prison, and it was her fault, at least in part. She couldn’t blame him for thinking of that, even though she hadn’t knowingly betrayed him. Oh god, Lucy thought. What if her parents were directly responsible for the murders of Flynn’s wife and daughter? Nausea crashed over her again, so she shoved those thoughts aside and stuffed them into a box to examine later. Or maybe never.
Lucy trudged to her bedroom and yanked at various drawers until she found her journals, both the one Flynn had given her (returned to her?) and the one her mother had gifted her. She threw them in a bag and left the house, not pausing again until she sat behind the wheel of her car. Sweat beaded on her upper lip, and her blazer felt like it was strangling her.  She tore it off as quickly as she could and tossed it on the passenger seat. Her hands tightened on the steering wheel until the leather creaked and her knuckles whitened with strain.
Lies. Lies. So many lies. Her grandfather had lived a life of lies, danger, and subterfuge, all because she had asked him to. He had sacrificed his happiness. And for what?
She breathed through her nose, scrambling for calm; she didn't find it. With a sigh that ruffled the locks of hair that had fallen into her sweat-damp face, Lucy released the steering wheel and fumbled for her phone.
She sent Wyatt a text.   Pls meet me at your place.
It felt like years passed while she waited for his response. What’s up? You OK?
Eyes closed, she pictured Wyatt sitting in the upstairs conference room or maybe the locker room at Mason Industries, eyeing his phone with a frown creasing his forehead. Was she OK?
She typed a response before she could think better of it. No. I need you.
Her phone chimed with his reply mere seconds later. On my way.
Why bother with preamble? Lucy thought, pushing past Wyatt into the hallway of his apartment as soon as he opened the door to her rapid series of knocks. “My mother is Rittenhouse.”
Wyatt blinked rapidly. “What?”
“My mother”—she shoved her hands into her hair and tugged until her scalp smarted and tears sprang to her eyes—“is Rittenhouse, Wyatt. I'm an idiot. The world’s biggest moron. God, how could I not see it? She’s been lying this whole time. She’s been lying my whole life. ” Lucy tossed the last words over her shoulder like a grenade as she stalked to his living room. She knew she was talking too fast, everything rushing out in a confusing torrent, but she couldn't stop.“My mom’s Rittenhouse. My fa—” Eyes screwed tight, she paused in her tirade and shook her head before continuing.
“Whoa. Take a breath. Slow down, Lucy—”
“My biological father is Rittenhouse.” Her voice shook and she hated it—hated herself—for the weakness. She folded her arms in front of her chest and paced in front of Wyatt’s brown leather couch. Head down she stared at the worn hardwood floor and stalked five steps one way before she spun on her heel and stalked five steps the other way. Click click click click click went the heels of her sensible, low-heeled black shoes. The floor started to blur into a golden brown streak. She inhaled an unsteady breath. “It’s in my blood…And my sister is gone and my mother doesn't care. She's known all this time and it doesn't matter to her. How can her daughter not matter to her?”
A floorboard creaked. There was a shift, of energy, of presence, then Wyatt stepped up behind her. Gentle fingers curled around her biceps; warm breath stirred her hair. Wyatt turned her until she faced him. Still, her gaze remained downcast, focused on the contrast between the curved toes of her shoes and Wyatt’s naked feet. They looked...oddly vulnerable, in a way that made her throat tighten. “Is my whole life just a series of false choices my parents designed for me?” Lucy asked, her voice quiet. “Have they… Has Rittenhouse been the puppeteer all this time, and I've just been the fucking puppet?” Her voice rose; Wyatt’s hands tightened on her arms. “I don't know what's real and what's a lie. I don't… I don’t know who I am,” she said, an unwelcome catch in her voice. Her gaze finally lifted to meet Wyatt’s.
His eyes were somber and calm as they watched her steadily, and she was glad she had gone there—gone to him. “We’ll figure things out,” he said, and she nodded, because she had faith in him, even if she couldn't quite believe his words just yet. “It’s OK, Lucy. Luce,” Wyatt said, moving a hand from her arm to the back of her neck, “hey, I know who you are.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I know who you are,” he said again, his breath puffing against her skin as he tilted her chin, leaned in, and kissed her.
She made a small sound in her throat, then stumbled backward in an effort to put some distance between them. Her hand rose to her throat. “No,” she said into the horrible silence, pained by the stark lines of shock and embarrassment she caught on Wyatt’s face. Right before her eyes, his expression shuttered, the openness that had been there scant moments before hidden by one of his masks. She was responsible for that, and she hated herself despite the necessity. Something aching and hollow opened in her stomach. “I'm...I’m so sorry, Wyatt. I just—” It had been their first kiss or at least the first one that wasn’t done for show, and she had ruined it because she had to. “It’s not you. We just can't do this right now.”
A few hours ago Wyatt had talked about focusing on the present and being open to possibilities. Of course she'd known what he was hinting at, and a part of her had been happy, even as Flynn’s face had flashed into her mind, filling her with sadness, guilt—and something else she might never be ready to face. That was before, when they had thought their work as a team was complete. That was before she had talked to her mother. Squaring her shoulders, she looked him directly in the eyes; they owed each other that much. “My mom said she and Rittenhouse are proud of me. I don't trust myself or my actions right now. How do I know I'm not doing exactly what they want me to do?”
“Lucy why would Rittenhouse care if we...if we kiss?”
“I don’t know.” She rubbed at her forehead, at the tightness there. “I don’t know, Wyatt. Maybe they wouldn’t. But I can’t… No, we can’t focus on”—Lucy waved a hand between them—“this right now.” She gasped and raised a hand, intending to touch his arm, but he retreated a step. Her hand dropped back to her side, heavy as a boulder. “We need to call Agent Christopher. Wyatt, my mother said someone from Rittenhouse is on the Mothership. ” It should have been the first thing she’d said when Wyatt let her into his apartment, but she’d been upset and… No, there was no good excuse. She’d simply messed up.
Wyatt’s phone rang. Lucy’s followed a few seconds later. “Logan,” Wyatt answered, rubbing the back of his neck. “Yeah. Uh huh. Got it. Lucy’s… here. On our way.”  After he hung up, he said, “That was Agent Christopher. Your mom was telling the truth; someone does have the Mothership. Emma. Let’s go.” He turned and started to walk away, shoulders hunched, and every step he took seemed to take him miles from her. “Wyatt,” she said softly, and he paused, “I really am sorry. I’m not trying to hurt you. It’s not the right time, and—”
“Forget it, ma’am,” he said, interrupting her and waving away her apology. He smiled, but it was brittle and didn’t reach those beautiful blue eyes she— “We’ve got a briefing to get to.” With that, he disappeared into his bedroom.
Like a puppet whose strings had just been cut, Lucy collapsed onto the couch and closed her eyes, her body and spirit leaden, and waited for Wyatt to return so they could head back to Mason Industries.

Five-0 Redux: A warning from McGarrett’s past reminds us of what matters most
By Wendie Burbridge / Special to the Star-Advertiser May 6, 2017
For the most part, fans watch “Hawaii Five-0” for more than just the pretty scenery,  shoot-em-up action, and intense drama. Not that viewers don’t enjoy that part of the hit television show, it seems as if they want more than just a typical police procedural.
Earlier this week, I was talking to former principal and personnel director of Hawaii’s public schools, Wendell Staszkow, about “Hawaii Five-0.” Like most Hawaiians, Staszkow watched the original Jack Lord, James MacArthur, and Kam Fong version, which aired from 1968 to 1980. Today, as an “ex-pat” living in Las Vegas where he works as an admissions counselor for UNLV, he watches the reboot to get a weekly dose of his island home– and because his daughter writes this column. While we were talking on the phone last Sunday, he said the best thing in all my years of writing about the show.
“Sometimes I want to watch “Hawaii Five-0” just to see them chase the bad guys, lock ‘em up, and then go have a beer,” he said.
I had to laugh. I’ve had fans around the world tell me what they like and love about the show, but my dad wins the “best fan quote” award in seven seasons. Because while the plot my father presents is simple, easy, with no frills– these are usually the kind of episodes many of us enjoy the most. Sure, we like the car chases, and the gun fights, and the funny subplots with our secondary characters– but all in all, give us the good guys catching the bad guys, add a pau hana beer to the mix, and that is a great show.
So this week’s episode had me a little trepidatious. The episode, written by Rob Hanning and directed by Krishna Rao, was titled “He keʻu na ka ʻalae a Hina” which means “a croaking by Hina’s mudhen.” The title comes from a traditional ʻōlelo noʻeau, or Hawaiian proverb, that means “a warning of trouble, as the cry of a mudhen at night is a warning of distress.”  The cry of distress comes from Naser Salaam (Omid Abtahi), an inmate at Gitmo, who McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) once showed great kindness to after he was captured by McG’s SEAL team ten years earlier.
Salaam asks McGarrett to come to Guantanamo Bay, so he can tell him in person about an impending terrorist attack on Oʻahu. He tells McG that if there is anyone who McGarrett loves on Oʻahu, “to get them off the island, and get them off now.” When McGarrett brings the news to his team, they are beyond skeptical. Yet, McGarrett feels that Salaam is paying McG back for the way McG treated him when he was being interrogated for information.
I loved the flashback scenes between McG and Salaam. While they were painful to watch, as Salaam has obviously been beaten and tortured, it is McGarrett’s actions that make the scenes between them so important. McG treats him with dignity. He brings him a prayer rug, allowing him ten minutes to pray. He gives him a meal after he has not been fed for a week, even though he is reprimanded by the CIA Operative (Terrell Clayton), who is in charge of gaining intel from Salaam. He sits with Salaam, speaking to the prisoner like a man and not as his enemy. He brings Salaam water as it is obvious he has not had any in days. It’s implied that McGarrett has brought Salaam clean clothing that also covers him appropriately for his prayer time. All of this tells us that McGarrett has tried very hard to treat Salaam decently, with respect, and kindness.
O’Loughlin is always so good in these intimate scenes. He can tell you so much with his eyes and his face. When he removes his ski mask, so that Salaam will see his face, we know he means to gain the man’s trust. As McG talks to him and spends time with him– man to man– rather than enemy to enemy, we can see how his actions reveal his desire to show Salaam that not all men are cruel.
Likewise, Abtahi is equally as strong in each scene, using his eyes to tell more of his character’s story. His character doesn’t speak much, just watches McGarrett for clues on how he is expected to act. It was intriguing to watch the two men play off each other. Both O’Loughlin and Abtahi make these simple, stripped down, scenes work on a much deeper level.
It is this strong use of these quiet scenes, peppered between the bigger and bolder scenes of action, and the Five-0 team chasing the bad guys, that help to make the episode so strong. It is in these scenes, with no special effects or stunts, where we can see how well “Hawaii Five-0” tells a story.
For me, it’s what saves the story. The impending terrorist attack seems so unlikely. Yet when it is coupled with the flashback scenes, showing the development of Salaam’s admiration of McGarrett, that helped to give the terrorist plotline a much stronger frame of reference.
While the Five-0 team chase down Salaam’s tip– to search for intelligence using the code name or phrase “Cain Allah.” With Jerry’s (Jorge Garcia) outside-the-box thinking they realize that perhaps it was an attempt at pronouncing Hawaiian words. So the closest to the word “cain” would be the word “kane” (pronounced kah-nay) or Hawaiian god of the sky, and instead of “Allah” the phrase “ala” as in “the way of”– which means, as McGarrett translates, “the way of the sky.”
Lou (Chi McBride) and Kono (Grace Park) search a travel agency, Ala O Kane, and find that it is actually a front for a “Hawala” which is a traditional way used in the Muslim world to transfer money. It was a way for families to send money home and is mostly based on trust and honor. Yet the team finds all of the paper records of transactions and quickly send the names to Chin (Daniel Dae Kim) who finds a link to a supposed suspect, Adnan Khalid (Nick Shakoour). Khalid is a naturalized American citizen living and teaching in Hawaiʻi, and as they search for him the show gets to turn on their high-powered action.
Five-0 storms Khalid’s house and find a planted video that announces Jihad and the reason for the terrorist attack. The video is set to be uploaded at 6:20 that evening, but they still do not know where Khalid could be. Lou and McG stake out a mosque in Mānoa and have Chin call his burner phone– as it rings, the two chase the owner of the phone, only to have him try and escape on a motorcycle before he is fatally t-boned by an oncoming car.
Once McG turns him over, they realize it was not Khalid they were chasing, but someone else. Seems as if Khalid is being framed to make it look like he is the one orchestrating the terrorist attack. As Lou and McG continue to search for a possible target, they find a photo on the dead bad guy’s burner phone and make a connection to an empty downtown office building.
They think it’s odd that an empty building is going to be attacked. But as they head toward the building, Lou sees that it is in the flight path of oncoming planes. Chin checks all 6:20 flights and realizes that a Marine, who was killed trying to arrest a high-ranking Al Qaeda leader, along with several members of his unit, are on a flight arriving shortly after 6:20. It is also scheduled to fly right over the empty office building.
I think this is where I start to notice the extreme difference of the stunt work of the show versus what it was just a few episodes ago. Stunt coordinator Eric Norris is obviously a complete professional, but his stunts are far more violent and brutal than they have been in the past. While I don’t normally mention that, I sometimes think perhaps too much violence doesn’t work for this show. We want our team to live and not limp– or have so many black eyes. I’m not trying to be a baby– but really, does McG have to get beat up so bad every week? His shiner at the end was awful. Kudos to the make-up team because it looked so real, I hurt for the guy.
So the team realizes that the terrorist attack is that they are going to shoot down the plane filled with innocent civilians and marines– and race to the roof to stop it from happening. McG ends up crawling up the side of the office building, using little more than the fingerhold ledges, to make it onto the roof. I suppose good shoes and gloves helped. Kono and Lou have a standard shootout with two goons protecting the roof access door, so the real terrorist can shoot down the plane with an over the shoulder rocket launcher.
Once McG gets to the roof, the fight that ensues is not at all pretty. McG stabs a knife into the bad guy’s groin and takes a few good punches before he finally just picks up the rocket launcher. When he blows our unnamed bad guy to dust with a well-aimed rocket, we’re pretty excited/shocked/surprised. Good thing the building was empty because the rocket sure left a mark, as well as a small fiery crater.
I suppose that means that my dad got his way this week. Five-0 did chase some very bad guys; they saved the innocent, the framed Khalid; they stopped the terrorists from killing the Marines who were bringing their hero friend home; they had a couple of high-speech car chases and cool gunfights; there was a motorcycle stunt; McGarrett risked his life crawling up the side of a building and engaged in some slick hand-to-hand combat–  before taking someone out with a rocket launcher.
And the team ended up having beers and shrimp fried rice at Kamekona’s, where we also tied up the humorous moment of the episode. Humor is always important for an episode and this week didn’t disappoint with Gerard Hirsch (the beloved Willie Garson) returning to again ask Kono to come to his rescue. This time, Adam (Ian Anthony Dale) helped Hirsch with a business plan to expand his crime scene cleaning business. Adam helps him rewrite the plan and shows it to Kamekona (Taylor Wily). Kamekona gives Hirsch the money to expand, thus becoming his partner in cleaning up crime.
So, Dad, you win. This week’s episode had all the parts you like– but it also had the kind of scenes that reveal so much about the character of Five-0. It is those moments that help to show the deep feeling of justice that McGarrett upholds no matter what he faces or what returns from his past.

Can an Insurance company still be held liable for the after affects of a car wreck?
Any advice is greatly appreciated. My problem is this, In July 2007 A man in a huge truck with a trailer hinge back up out from a parking space, it I saw him and the only thing I could at the time is speed up so he would not hit the middle of my car. He ended up hitting the side bumper and ripped it off. I have A 1999 Cryshler Sebring. It truely was a hard hit. Well the man's insurance did pay to fix the bumper, but now everything keeps going wrong. I did mention it to the person at the shop where we had arranged for the repair. I asked to please give me an estimated how much it would cost to fix it. When the time came, She did not do so and when I asked the lady she gave me a look like there is really something wrong with my car. I give two guys a ride to the bus so they do not have to walk the mile or so and they can attest that my car was running smooth. So many things one after another have gone wrong. I have put over 700.00 and still more problems. So my question is what do you think my chances are If I take it to the manufactor and they will rule in my favor. The Insurance Co-ordinator says if they say it was from the accident then they will pay for it. Straight from the start right after the accident my car kept dyeing out, so I had to drive it like a standard car with my feet on the gas and brake at the same time. So in the end , last I have heard there is a short somewhere so I took it to Spitfire and place that specializes in electrical problems and he told me my computer is bad. First of all the things my battery kept dyeing out, my car would not start up in the mornings,I took it to Auto zone and my battery was fat, swollen no good. Bought a new one, then I took it to a man at midas , he said I needed a valve cover gasket and he showed me my spark plugs we filled with oil, fixed that. Now Midas ran a scan and said I had either a bad map sensor or a short. Changed the map sensor the car is still barely running, so then another place said it was a short but had it for two weeks and could not find the short . I would like to know , if the guys Insurance is still on the hook for all the problems I have had with the car since the accident. Now I give these two guys a ride from work each day and they knew there was nothing wrong with my car before the accident. What is the best thing I can do. Many thanks , Sylvia""

My husband and I need a second car because I got a job way across town and with school coming up, we have completely different schedules... So I was thinking of only putting my name on the title and the insurance for the new car because my husband has an accident on record and our rates went up. Secondly, would it be beneficial to take my name off our current car and insurance so that it will be only in his name? Could this help save money with our insurance? Sorry if this is a gay question, just trying to save us a little extra money to put away in savings""

Dispute Car insurance claim estimate - Tiny paint mark
I lightly bumped the car in front of me and left a tiny red mark from my license plate. When I got out of the car I could rub the paint off with my finger, but I could tell the other driver was uncomfortable with me touching his car so I stopped. He said he wasnt going to file a claim but he did and the estimate for fixing his car was $641 Dollars!!!!!! Since this is over the $500 limit my insurance has for no penalty, if i do not pay this out of pocket my insurance will go up by $250 a year for 6 years. WHAT CAN I DO? I want to dispute this because there is no way it would cost that much to rub the red paint off. Thanks in advance!""

Raise car insurance price?
I recently got a speeding ticket for $198. I've only been pulled over twice, once in 2006 and then this current occasion. I'm a college student and I'm very short on money and I'm unsure as to what to do. I've already saved $100 and when I get paid again, I'll save the remaining amount. However, I hadn't thought about traffic school just because it's about $30 for the class and then an additional $10 to get the certification sent to me and by that point, it'll be close to 30 days and I have to mail the ticket and payment out since I was pulled over in a different county. And, it would end up costing me more money in the end. I'd receive 4 points on my license without taking traffic school. How bad is 4 points? Will the points make my car insurance go up? Question about car insurance?
I'm hopefully buying a car next month and my brother has agreed to look after it for me as he has private land with his property so I can leave it with him uninsured and then I will insure myself before I go to uni in September and then collect my car. My brother says he will take it for a spin now and again to keep it warmed up which is fine by me but I'm worried as their will be no insurance listed for that car. Although my brother has his own car and his own insurance policy which says he can drive anyone else's car, I would be the legal owner of the car and have no insurance so was wondering if it would be possible for him to be accused of driving without insurance? Hope that makes sense. Also if a car needs an MOT does it have to be the legal owner that takes the car for MOT test or could my brother do it on my behalf (my brother lives 100 miles from me and I wouldn't have the insurance to drive it there). Thanks in advance.""

I went for this policy pretty much because it was the cheapest because I'd spent all my money on the car, haha! After a couple of months I've finally managed to sort my finances out and I'm ready to upgrade to fully comp. I drive around 30 miles a day to work and back and would just like that little extra knowledge that incase anything does happen. So I email KwikFit (who take 2 weeks to get back!!) to ask them what the deal is. How do I do this? To my dismay, I got the following email back: In response to your email, I can confirm that your policy can only be upgraded if you are making another permanent change to your policy eg a change of vehicle/address/driver, alternatively your policy would need to be replaced to another insurer. Are they within their rights to do this? Surely upgrading to fully comp means an extra wad of money from me monthly? Thanks :-)""

Why am I paying more for my insurance because of my credit?
So, I recently paid off all my debt that was racked up from an irresponsible boyfriend. My score is in the high 600's, so pretty mediocre....but I'm relieved that I don't have any debt. The insurance I pay on my car is a higher quote than normal due to my credit and I'm just curious why that would influence the rates. How does having past outstanding debt mean I am a bad or unsafe driver? I am 30, have a college degree, have a good job, don't have anything negative on my driving record. I just don't think that it's fair to be charged more than another person because of spending habits; the two (in my mind) are completely unrelated.""
""Compare car insurance with health insurance, car insurance is a law, health insurance isn't why?""
car insurance is a law right? and I know a lot of people that have a very difficult time paying car insurance since it's so high, but it seems like insurance companies are making a lot of money, NOW how can we compare that to health insurance if it became a law to have to have it. You would hope that health insurance would be more affordable since more people are putting money into the pot right, but I am afraid but it being a law, the rich (insurance companies will get richer) and raise the cost of health insurance since it's a law. Maybe our solution would be to have our government give us tax breaks on health insurance premiums and some how get more for our money with health insurance. It's sad that you have to spend $500.00 a month for health insurance but still have to pay office visits and wait 6 months for preexisting problems. Maybe the solution is to have better health insurance options, right? Isn't that what McCain wants?""

Other driver was not covered under insurance?
I was in a car accident where the other driver (to be referred as The Idiot) was at fault. The police were called and The Idiot was given a warning citation. The insurance company called me today to inform me that the claim was being denied because The Idiot was not an authorized driver under the policy. It appears that The Idiot borrowed the car from his father. Now I am stuck with thousands of dollars in repairs that it appears will be billed back to me. What are my options?

What's the cheapest way to commute between Liverpool and Manchester?
Hi, I'm starting a new job in Manchester next month and I'm trying to find the cheapest way to commute. I'll be travelling from Rock Ferry to Manchester Piccadilly 5 days a week and my working hours will be roughly 9am to 5pm, although some days will require an earlier start and a later finish. I've looked at a rail season ticket and was shocked to discover it would cost 3008.00 with First Trans Penine. I've also read that the train journey is horrendous. My wife and I share a car but realistically, she can't rely on me to pick her up and drop her off at work at the same time every day (she works in Liverpool) so we would potentially need another car. With that, comes the initial cost of buying the vehicle, then tax, insurance, MOT and weekly fuel, which in my mind will cost even more than the rail season ticket. Added to that is the fact that we're not particularly well off so can't afford more than a couple of thousand for a 2nd hand car. A brand new car on finance would be out of the question. So, are there any regular Liverpool to Manchester commuters out there and if so, how do you keep your costs down? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!""

Do I need a consent to settle by my own auto insurance company?
The guy who hit me does not have an ample amount of insurance to cover my injuries. They are offering me the policy limits to settle. My own uninsured or uninsured motorist has been given enough documentation to know that my additional insurance will come into play. I have filed suit against the guy and his insurance company, but do I need a letter of consent to settle with them from my own insurance company to make sure that my uninsured motorist coverage will still be available to me. I really think it is criminal for any insurance company or state to make the limits on auto insurance so low, when the average cost of an auto accident is higher than the minimum coverages that they allow drivers to driver under. Also, there are many attorneys that wont even look at taking a case unless the limits are much higher than state minimum, because they can make considerably more on those who are very well insured. My own insurance company is treating my like I am retarded, and I was until I started reading all the insurance laws and bought a very fine civil litigation book for 4 dollars, best investment I ever made. But I am no Pro Se expert, my hat is tipped to you attorneys and insurance adjusters. What a stressful job you have and so many laws to abide by and to follow. I can only get better the more I read the more I know. Thanks for your time.""
How do I get a car registered which has no papers/plates and has sat for years?
I responded to a newspaper ad recently and bought a 1971 vw beetle. The car had no plates and no paperwork that I could find. There were several telltale signs that the car had sat a number of years, but I understood it to be a project. The seller said he had originally bought it at auction with the intent of using its (good) engine for a sand rail dune buggy, but that like many other good plans requires time. Once paid for, I was provided no bill of sale which I feel I was owed. It was as if the seller felt that since he had let the car go very cheap, that he owed no person any more, and if he did, he should've either charged more or wrecked it instead. Like he could have gone to the trouble but would be put out for something extraneous. The seller has a shop in an easy to find location, so it is not as if I cannot find him, and he doesn't appear to be trying to hide, hes just a strangely irritable and crotchety person.""

How to get low mileage discount from Progressive auto insurance?
I know that many companies will give a huge discount on your automotive insurance premiums if you supply them with proof that you drive far fewer miles than average. I understand that the best way to do this would be to mail a copy of recent vehicle inspections so that they can officially see the low mileage driven over time. However, Progressive does not mention anything, anywhere about low mileage discounts. I have been told you have to ask for this, or else you would never know it is possible. Does anyone have any knowledge, advice, tips, etc regarding this? Furthermore, does anyone know how you would go about this specifically with Progressive?""

Rental car insurance -- what does it cover?
We are going to Vegas in a few days and are renting a car. Since this car is going to be in and out of parking garages, I think it's a good idea to buy the rental car insurance @ $ 10.99 a day. Say while the car is in the parking garage and someone scratches or dings the door, would this insurance cover it? That's all I'm really worried about.""

How do doctors actually pay for liability insurance?
On studentdoc.com, the salary survey stated that the average OB/GYN made roughly $238000 a year, but some sites I have looked at show that they also pay $50000 a year (in florida, that rises to $100000) for malpractice insurance. Even for other practices, such as pediatrics and internal medicine, the rate is usually $30000+. This is a huge amount of money and really, after paying student loans, mortgages, taxes, and etc, how much money do doctors actually take home? Surely not all doctors actually pay for their premiums. Specifically, how much would a pediatric surgeon pay in malpractice insurance in California or Illinois? Just some food for thought.""
Can a lender file a claim against your insurance company after repossession?
My car was repossessed on 9/11. I attempted to get my car back..but Wells Fargo played games..such as saying the car is on its way to the auction...no, its still there and we can't place a hold on it..it leaves for the auction in a couple of days. So, I went and got me another car. Now, today..I find out that they are filing a claim for the very day that they took the car. The claim was filed at 1:06 today. However, the car was not insured on that very date. Also, I had to sign some papers to reinstate the policy to the effect that no claims would be filed because NO accident occurred. Will the lender be able to file against my insurance policy under these circumstances?""
