The lake is part of the Muncho Lake Provincial Park and located at kilometre 681 (mile 423) of the Alaska Highway. The lake is about 12 km (7.5 mi) long and its width varies. It reaches a maximum depth of 110 m (360 ft). The surrounding peaks (the Terminal Range of the Muskwa Ranges to the west and the Sentinel Range to the east) reach altitudes of more than 2,000 m (6,600 ft), while the lake lies at an elevation of 820 m (2,690 ft). It is formed along the Trout River, a tributary of the Liard River.
The jade-green color of the lake is attributed to the presence of copper oxide leached from the bedrock underneath. Its name is derived from the Kaska language in which "muncho" translates as "big water".
The small community of Muncho Lake is established on the lake's southern shore, at the confluence of Trout River and Muncho Creek. The Muncho Lake/Mile 462 Water Aerodrome is set up along the eastern shore of the lake, at Mile 462 of the Alaska Highway.
i have never done one of them tumblr videos but winter is the prettiest season here and i wanted to share the extremely specific sight of snow drifting off conifers and being caught in the afternoon sun
my goal craft-wise as a burgeoning little words doer is to be able to describe something like this and do it justice
Across the Canadian Rockies (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens
Via Flickr:
A setting looking to the west while taking in views across a forest of evergreens to more distant ridges and peaks of the Waputik Range at Hector Lake Viewpoint. This is in Banff National Park along the Icefields Parkway. In composing this image, I decided on a more leveled-on view with the horizon. I felt I could capture a view looking over and across the forest to the more distant mountains. I liked how there was that little sliver of the lake to highlight a contrast between the forest and mountains.
The little man gestured up at the Wall with a gnarled black walking stick.
“Makes you wonder what lies beyond.
“Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what’s on the other side?”
He cocked his head and looked at Jon with his curious mismatched eyes. “You do want to know what’s on the other side, don’t you?”
“It’s nothing special,” Jon said.
He wanted to ride with Benjen Stark on his rangings, deep into the mysteries of the haunted forest, wanted to fight Mance Rayder’s wildlings and ward the realm against the Others, but it was better not to speak of the things you wanted.
“The rangers say it’s just woods and mountains and frozen lakes, with lots of snow and ice.”
“And the grumkins and snarks,” Tyrion said. “Let us not forget them, Lord Snow, or else what’s that big thing for?”
Anyway this took me nine hours and thirty three minutes and I did it all with zero references for literally fucking any of it for no reason god I wish I had used references but too late now Ig
I will say though most of those hours were spent on the lineart. Aka every fucking blade of grass and flower I did in the foreground which you can hardly even see. Because you were never meant to be able to see the majority of it.
This is just the lineart
And then for the project I had to incorporate several things into a drawing:
-water feature
-whimsy
-creature
-nature aspects
-lighting effect
-some kind of architecture
(I was also given a list of places I could use for inspo or as references. I used none of them. I probably should have-)
