reading about the history of the tin mines in sungai ujong and malay (esp minangkabau) peasant and chinese labourer resistance to british colonial rule in what is now negeri sembilan and how the malay ruling class weaponized communalism - ie. the classic "malay ethnic solidarity vs chinese and indians" in opposition to class solidarity - in order to get the malay peasantry to stop fighting british colonial rule and help the malay nobility profit from british imperial rule, to the detriment of the class interests of the majority of malays as well as those of chinese and indians in the region. tale as old as time

"this is a witch hunt" say the men threatened of being asked accountability for their predatory behavior, when History shows that witch hunt were for the most part targeting (destitute) women
"pregnancy is slavery" say the White women who participated in using Black female slave body to nurse their own children
"there's a Great Replacement" say the White Nations which are actually the only ones that invaded and replaced the native populations of the (many) place they invaded
remember friends: never let oppressors twist & shift the narrative.

Fake news here:
Barbados recently (30th november 2021) became a republic within the commonwealth instead of just an independent state. Since then Barbados has looked into ways of doing right to the people that were enslaved back in the colonial ages. Part of this is building museums about the atrocities, another part is attempting to get people to pay back reparations for their ancestors roles in slavery.
They've not pushed to get reparations previously, as the British monarch was still their head of state. With that no longer being the case, the Barbados PM Mia Mottley is calling for 1 specific family to pay reparations. Drax Hall was the largest slave plantation in Barbados and the only one still in the hands of the family of the original slavers. Its current owner is Richard Drax, the Conservative MP for South Dorset. This is who they're asking to pay these reparations. They want him to give the land back so they can build on it, and otherwise there's talk of them sueing for money instead.
The chairman of Barbados's national commission on reparations (David Comissiong) has talked about how other families might be asked to pay reparations too. In particular he mentioned the British royal family/ other relative of Queen Elizabeth, none of which is happening now
The only reason Cumberbatch is involved is the Telegraph used his name to ask whether he was involved so they could get clicks. Cumberbatch or his family, aren't involved in the slightest. Other newspapers than ran with this clickbait and made it much larger. Here is the only thing that's said about Cumberbatch
When asked if descendants of the Cumberbatch estate would be pursued, Mr Comissiong said: “This is at the earliest stages. We are just beginning. A lot of this history is only really now coming to light.”
They are not actually targetting him, Barbados in general is just making an effort to reclaim land that was used as slave plantations and use it (or the funds if they come to an agreement) to fund infrastructure.
The article linked here is just fully clickbait without doing much themselves, and intentionally using charged words like "reparations" to get clicks.

While I agree that the queen and monarchy represent colonialism and british imperialism to a lot of people, I probably won't be sharing many jokes or celebrating her death today. And i say this as someone who weeks ago would've said i would celebrate the death of the queen, but the reality is that I'm more terrified than anything. As a Jewish citizen of the commonwealth I'm dreading the hypernationalism and civic unrest about to happen, not to mention the economic impact. If you're someone affected by or descended from those affected by british imperialism you're totally entitled to find humour in her death and make jokes, I'm not about to police that. But I can't help but personally feel that if you're economically or socially unaffected by her death that instead sharing condolences for those affected by colonialism, sharing support for commonwealth republicanism, and having empathy for marginalized people upset about her death for aforementioned reasons are all more beneficial atm. But that's just my individual opinion.

It's gonna be so funny to go through all the anglosphere posts being like "oh so sorry she died she was such a respected monarch :/" and they're going to learn there are entire COUNTRIES that are celebrating right now, you could make this a global holiday and like 70% of the planet would be partying

what’s y’all’s strangest fanfic experiences? mine is my secondary school being mentioned BY NAME in a fic. it was a h*rry p*tter fic and my school is in malaysia. they also relocated twice as student numbers increased, and the fic had historical accuracy by mentioning the previous location (by street name) rather than the newer one it moved to in the 2000s. it’s been a decade since I’ve read this fic and it haunts me to this day.

Shirley, I saw the asks about you're having British accent. While I can hear that on your writing, the 'you know' you drop at the end of sentence sounds very Asian to me. Singlish, probably, because I often hear that from people in Singapore and Malaysia (usually they say something like you know laaah~). Sometimes I say it too to emphasize the meaning.
I wish I took sociolinguistic seriously in uni because it's an interisting topic tbh. 😁
sociolinguistics???? that sounds SO cool the me that wished she took linguistics in uni is literally foaming at the mouth 🤣🤣🤣
ive always thought i had a pretty standard norcal/valley girl accent since i grew up in sf and was surrounded basically by valley girls. trying to get 'literally' 'like' 'so' out of my speech is an ongoing battle 😔 i do truncate and lose consonants while speaking, but thats harder to translate over the written word, as is my vocal fry. i adopted all this fancy vocabulary out of PURE spite from the first 2 years of schooling spent in esl 🤣🤣🤣
i picked up 'you know' (and puns) from valley girls stanning kim seokjin for....7....? years.....gods im old. my dad has been told often that he sounds singaporean and everytime he gets so insulted like his hk spirit is crushed x2 super effective damage 🤣🤣🤣 i wonder what he'll think when i tell him ppl think im singaporean chinese 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
yall have me convinced! i hope the next time i open my mouth in london ppl will stop looking at me like i commited unspeakable crimes on their royal language when the american accent IS actually the og british accent smh

It’s incredible how everything I learn about Irish, Welsh and Manx history makes me wish the entirety of the parliament would collapse into a sinkhole and flood from the Thames with all those cunts in it and that Buckingham would collapse with that entire lineage of shit inside
yeah basically 👍

I've seen many Brits express annoyance at the Irish for being "bitter" about the past but honestly the more I learn about the enduring damage colonisation had on this island the more I think the Irish are frankly not bitter ENOUGH. The English ruling classes get off remarkably easy and most Irish people are, if anything, far too forgiving

Some advice to my British frens, whenever my fellow burgers got taxed for bullshit reasons during long periods of financial instability and crisis (granted not for a giant funeral for a broad who regularly leeched off the people's coffers like a literal welfare queen), we found that tea helped. A lot of it. Poured into a harbor after tarring and feathering any taxman who came into town. From my travels in your country, you have a lot of tea. Anyway, just a thought
