It's a BareBones Brigade Halloween!
Tumblr media
I'm sad that I don't have something new to post for this year's leadup to halloween, but this is an illustration from last year that's still very close to my heart. Everyone on Caliosteo is here celebrating together, the patrol team, the former commanders of the BB Brigade, and even Joe Wildwest himself. What's more, it seems they all decided to collaborate and dress up with some BB Brigade flare (maybe it reminds them all of the good old days).
I remember working tirelessly on this one for a near month, and it was honestly a really fun project in hindsight that I wish I could replicate. I have the distinct memory of staying up all the way until Halloween morning making sure that it was perfect, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.
Since the image is a bit widely cropped and not the most "mobile friendly," here are some close-ups on the batches of characters scattered around Ribular Isle. Dina and Rupert sticking close together (as usual), Cole lashing out at Lester after finding out that he stole some of his hair dye (as usual), and Pauleen's Amargo acting snarky, Todd getting himself into trouble (as usual).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here are also some WIPs from this one. This was the beginning of the phase where I started refining my sketch lining rather than doing a whole separate layer of lineart on top of an original sketch. It's honestly super satisfying, and I recommend anyone who likes drawing to try it out!
As for the lighting, when I do a shading layer I like to change everything underneath to be a solid white, it makes it easier for me to create realistic lighting in a 3D sense, almost as if I'm forming the shape of a sculpture. Plus, when it comes out like this before adding in color everyone here looks like a ghost >< (how appropriate)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One more thing, I made these little pfp icons to go with the Halloween vibe, also making one for Kris (one of the characters from my own Fossil Fighters sequel story). All of their last names are purely headcannons of mine, but there's still a bit of meaning behind all of them.
Being that I'm half Greek, I've always seen Dino and Dina as being short for Κωνσταντίνος and Κωνσταντίνα respectively (also because that happens to be my Greek name, where Dean comes from ><) so I think it makes sense to give them a Greek last name that may or may not also connect to something in my own story.
As for Rupert (still going with my own headcannons), both he and Kris originally hail from Bockland, a European-based Fossil Park that's just as big as Vivosaur Island/Caliosteo. Both of them act so posh and well-mannered, and I'd love to come up with a reason for imagining Rupert with a slight British accent. Kris's story comes a good 9 years after the events of the first 2 games, but she shares a lot in common with Rupert back when he was her age, much more than just being from Bockland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thanks if you read this far. I'm both happy and sad to be able to share and talk about this illustration again. If there's anyone here on Tumblr seeing this for the first time, then I'm very happy I can share with you.
I hope you all have a happy week leading up to Halloween night!

Fossil Fighters Headcanons because it's 3:00 AM and I can't sleep.
Most Vivosaurs do not make good pets. Not because they're too wild or anything, but because they're too big or (sometimes) require water when out of battle.
This doesn't mean you shouldn't take care of your Vivosaur, quite the opposite! You should take time outside of battle to bond with your Vivosaurs.
The most popular Pet Vivosaurs are the really small Pterosaurs and theropods.
Tro act like cats. Really intelligent cats.
Dino Medals provide energy for Vivosaurs due to remnants of the Stone Sleep Revival technology they were based on.
Champions takes place about a year after the original Fossil Fighters. This is why Dinaurians aren't really common yet.
Frontier is an AU because that game sucks. (Actually because there are so many things that are different that I'm not even gonna try and explain it.) That said, the plot still does happen in the main 'verse, albeit with some fairly major changes. I might cover that sometime, because I have IDEAS.
Joe Wildwest set up a group chat between the patrol team, the staff leaders and the BB commanders.
He regrets this decision immensely.
(Dina, Stella, and Lester all independently entered the chat by saying 'WASSUP FUCKERS!')
Dina and Dino are siblings.
Dino won the Caliosteo cup, Dina saved the world.
Dina is a disaster lesbian.
She had an instant crush on Pauleen once she saw her without the mask.
She also got a huge crush on Lola.
Like, they are so cute? Help?
(Dino is just laughing hysterically)
(Then Dina teases him about his crush on Rupert and he clams up.)
Dina is a chaotic gremlin. Her Dimetro and Compso are enablers.
Dino is just. So exasperated by his sister.
Hunter, Rosie, and Duna are all in a relationship together.
None of them quite know how it happened.
They know it's Raptin's fault somehow.
One of the big problems that happens post-champions is figuring out what country will allow some dinaurians to settle.
No country has accepted so far, though they're pretty sure once one country does it, the rest will follow
Good thing the patrol team is on good terms with a princess, huh?
The sub-idolcomps, now that they don't have as much to do, enjoy pranking Raptin.
He almost doomed Earth, they're allowed to be petty.
Duna eventually gets a job with this verse's Wardens
And oh boy is she terrifyingly good at her new job
Just don't get into a moving vehicle with her at the wheel
(Rosie and Hunter learned this the hard way)
(Daliah might have a slight crush.)
I think that's all for now. Might come up with more. Might write some stories based on these. Who knows. Not me.

“A sinister feeling is in the air- Are you prepared for battle?”
Yet again another instance where I completely ignore a canon design in favor of unnecessary details
(I’m not sure how much of a fandom Fossil Fighters has on this site but headcanons under the cut?)
- I know the Boneysaurs are supposed to be ghosts or something but I’m choosing to ignore that in favor of fluffy ghost dinosaurs
- I couldn’t find a decent reference image of Cole AT ALL so I improvised. Multiple artistic liberties were taken.
- Cole wears eyeliner and has long eyelashes. He’s the only one out of the commanders who puts genuine effort into how he looks.
- Every member of the BB Brigade nicknames their Vivosaurs. Don names them after old cowboy film stars, Cole names his after rock stars, Lester nicknames them after cars, and Lola after actresses she likes.
- I did not draw the star. In this instance I forgot, but I doubt that it’s going to change.

shay.. gibe me some assorted champions headcanons... thamnk you.
Absolutely! (I have so many...)
Dina is a trans girl and bi, with a preference for girls.
Dino is a trans boy and bi.
Todd is demisexual.
Pauleen is a lesbian.
Rupert is demiromantic/asexual
Joe is totally gay. No one who wears cowboy apparel and runs a dinosaur-themed park can be straight that’s the law.
Both Cole and Lola are pan, and both lean more towards girls.
Not really sure about Lester tbh?
Dina and Dino are twins! Dino is older than his sister by a few minutes.
Dino’s hair is styled and dyed to match Hunter’s because the two are best friends. Dina’s is natural.
Pauleen has severe social anxiety to the point where she wouldn’t even leave her home unless she was with her grandfather (who she’s closer to than her parents). After meeting the rest of the Patrol Team, though, she learns how to manage it better.
Todd has severe self-confidence issues which is why he’s so cowardly; he doesn’t want to be seen in a negative way. He also has a tendency to push others away because of this, and unfortunately doesn’t realize this until after he runs from the BB Brigade Base after Dina is framed.
Dina and Todd were childhood friends and have been inseparable since kindergarten. They stopped going to traditional school in 5th grade and started online schooling because they were beginning to train to be Fossil Fighters.
Rupert’s original Mapo/Mapo King was one that he’s had since he was very young. It’s never left his side and likely never will.
Pauleen and Rupert actually have pretty similar music taste and like to exchange new songs that they hear with each other.
Joe low-key adopts the BB Brigade trio after the events of the main storyline. He kinda just buys them snacks and makes sure they stay out of trouble.
Cole, Lola, and Lester all join the Patrol Team after the BB Brigade disbands. They tend to stay in their own little group as opposed to hanging out with the original four (or five? if Dino is a part of it?), but they still get along with everyone.
Pauleen suggested that the Patrol Team get matching jackets and everyone was game for it. Cole helped design them. (They all have a T-Rex design on the back, and each one is the specific person’s favorite color. Dina’s is blue, Dino’s is orange, Pauleen’s is magenta, Todd’s is forest green, and Rupert’s is red. The BB trio decided to make all of their jackets black.)
Pauleen loves unicorns, which it what influenced her to Super Evolve her Amargo.
Pauleen was originally planning to study dance and become a famous dancer, but growing up on Vivosaur Island and seeing all the Fossil Fighters around her home made her seek fame elsewhere.
Todd never wanted to Super Evolve his Stego, but ZongaZonga forced it to do so while Todd was under his spell. Nevertheless, Todd loves Barbaros.
I’m probably forgetting some but that’s what I’ve got for now!

some quick queer fossil fighters headcanons
-Several vivosaurs have been treated throughout the ages as queer icons. Generally, dromaeosauridae, particularly Dilopho, Breme, and Nychus, are seen as representative of all forms of queerness. Moreover, Aopteryx, Proto, and Guam, who are gifted with the ability to transform into yet more glorious iterations of themselves, are commonly used in trans iconography. Shanshan tends to be used as a transmasc icon solely, while Guam is usually used for transfem iconography. Aopteryx is used dually as a generalised trans icon and as a representation of nonbinary Fossil Fighters. Also; Sinopteryx is often incorporated into lesbian iconography.
-Most assume that Holt, for his love of V-raptor, would be gay. They're not wrong that he's queer, but his specific brand of queerness is asexuality.
-Dinaurians have more complex chromosomes than humans, so have their own approach to classifying both sex and gender. While there exist both female and male Dinaurian phenotypes, these phenotypes don't always match with their BC/CC chromosome distributions—environmental influence plays a far greater part in Dinaurian than human puberty, so BC males and females both exist, as do CC males and females, and BC and CC intersex Dinaurians. While Dinaurian standards of masculinity and femininity exist, they present more guidelines than cultural imperatives—as such, many Dinaurians fit into neither box socially or biologically, and this is broadly considered normative. Human ideas of straightness, gayness, and bisexuality thus don't always translate well into Dinaurian culture, as the idea of inherently being attracted to especially stringent expressions of certain chromosomal phenotypes just doesn't compute when those phenotypes aren't straightforward. Dinaurians might mention preferring masculinity or femininity somewhat if asked about their sexualities, but are more likely to emphasise personality, intellect, or specific nondimorphic physical characteristics. That is, most dinaurians are sapiosexual and pansexual to some degree, but pansexuality doesn't tend to entirely translate as a cultural construct.
-Near the Hare Club, Cranial Isle has a small hangout room labelled 'the Aopteryx Club'. It's a de facto space for trans Fossil Fighters to meet up and trade anecdotes, and Terry insists on setting aside a portion of the Fighter Station housekeeping budget to make sure the Aopteryx Club is furnished as well as possible.
-Terry is gay, and Cole is a bisexual who long assumed himself to be the sole queer man worth his own attention. The two attended highschool together, and slowly, ever so slowly, have been seen becoming more and more affectionate with each other in public.
-Lola is nonbinary and aroace, but doesn't tend to mention her gender identity unless asked. She's seldom felt quite comfortable with they/them pronouns, but considers herself human before she considers herself in any way female. Though she's ace, she absolutely adores gossiping about others' love lives, and has made every effort possible to nudge Cole closer to Terry.
-Lester is nonbinary and transmasc (he/they pronouns). He and Lola spend a great deal of time making music after hours at the Aopteryx club.
-Pauleen and Dina are lesbian. Oh so very lesbian. Dina is usually entirely oblivious to any male expressions of attraction towards her. Pauleen is not oblivious when men adore her, but tends to be upfront about seldom returning feelings.
-Rupert and Dino are gay. Oh so very gay. From a marketing perspective, Rupert's father didn't disapprove of his son's sexuality—rather, he despised his son's choice in partner, and feared that Rupert and Dino's public affection for each other would drive away potential clients for FossilDig. Rupert managed to allay most of his father's worries by pointing out that FossilDig could likely buy into rainbow capitalism more now, but look less conspicuous doing so. Nevertheless, Rupert's father remained too stuffy to follow through on such a business venture, and pride month sales remain anodyne. Joe Wildwest, meanwhile, not only dotes on his son, but has been absolutely vocal about LGBT rights since he noticed that Dino was gay. 'Noticed', rather than 'was told', since Dino never really came out—he just happened to have a first crush on a male, rather than female, classmate, and the family rolled with it from there.
-In the Patrol Team, Todd is the token straight on thin ice.
-P. A. Leon is gloriously and gorgeously aroace. Though she dated as a young woman, she came to realise she better enjoyed time spent alone with her Kraftwerk and Gary Numan records than time spent together with partners. Her team comprises solely dromaesauridae, and as such, long before she used the term 'asexual' on radio, many celebrated her apparent queerness.
-Diggins and Beth are both trans, and Diggins was the first person to popularise Aopteryx as a symbol of transness.
-Joe describes himself as straight, but also swoons over 70s & 80s rockstars. He's as straight as a 70s rockstar can be—that is, functionally bicurious at minimum. An, uh, 'extremely devoted ally'.
-Though Stryker gives extremely little away to the press, he's always been openly gay. It's not something he's ever wished to conceal; as such, he's the first openly queer head of the Wardens.
-Dahlia and Penny are probably the most prominent resident sapphic couple at INTERFOL.

AND AS FOR MY SECOND FAVORITE THING; Cole having an entirely unexplained bloodlust for Kowloon (because basically! I integrated Frontier into the previous two Fossil Fighters games, which here take place at basically the same time. So two/possibly three bastards set on world domination/destruction.
