Dodo Bird :-
Tumblr media
The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a flightless bird native to Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. It stood about three feet tall and weighed around 15–40 pounds. The dodo evolved without natural predators, making it fearless of humans. Unfortunately, when sailors arrived in the late 1500s, they hunted the bird extensively, and introduced animals like rats and monkeys ate its eggs. By the late 1600s, the dodo was extinct. It has since become a symbol of human-caused extinction. Despite its disappearance, the dodo remains famous in popular culture, representing lost species and the importance of conservation efforts.

I’m excited to announce that my stickers are now available wholesale from Faire! My direct link is here, but for any of my followers, I would love to know any local stores or museums you frequent that I should reach out to that sells artist made goods (especially if they cater to nature and science minded folks) to get more of my designs out into stores. thanks so much!

Inktober 52 2023 - Week 27 - ‘Cuddle’
What else but a drawing of the so called 'Triassic Cuddle'. A fossil discovered that found a mammal like reptile Thrinaxodon sharing a burrow with an injured amphibian Broomistega (it had broken ribs that appear to be in the process of healing, but not likely caused by the Thrinaxodon).
While it is most likely the Thrinaxodon was in a state of aestivation or torpor (like a very deep sleep - think hibernation) and therefore couldn't evict its new amphibious resident; I think this fossil really hit a chord with some people. It's never a good idea to humanize animal behaviour, but I think we all wish that this was a case of two animals facing a catastrophic extinction event and deciding it was best to ride it out in the safety and warmth that comes in numbers. At least until the rains came.
Unfortunately it would seem it did, and these two were buried in a flood and died. Kept hidden in the earth for 250 million years until we came along and found their short story.

Silly Game Time: If you were to be the patron deity of something (the way the Muses are goddesses of different artforms, Tlaloc is a rain god, Amaterasu is a sun goddess, and Anansi is a god of stories and trickery), what would you choose? It can be as broad or as specific as you like.
This is a hard one because I'm convinced I'd be an awful god OR be a good one although very problematic (like, meddling too much).
BUT- If I had to choose on this precise moment, I'd like to be a deity for extinct critters (and by extension, paleontology). It just gets me really sentimental thinking about prehistoric animals, how they died million of years ago, and million years later, we are able to find them and try to discover their stories and act with a fascination about them or even be moved by what they went through.
They're the reason why things are the ways they're right now, our existence is in debt of them, it's as sad as it's beautiful.

as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds
