Dodo Bird :-

The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a flightless bird native to Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean. It stood about three feet tall and weighed around 15–40 pounds. The dodo evolved without natural predators, making it fearless of humans. Unfortunately, when sailors arrived in the late 1500s, they hunted the bird extensively, and introduced animals like rats and monkeys ate its eggs. By the late 1600s, the dodo was extinct. It has since become a symbol of human-caused extinction. Despite its disappearance, the dodo remains famous in popular culture, representing lost species and the importance of conservation efforts.

Inktober 52 2023 - Week 27 - ‘Cuddle’
What else but a drawing of the so called 'Triassic Cuddle'. A fossil discovered that found a mammal like reptile Thrinaxodon sharing a burrow with an injured amphibian Broomistega (it had broken ribs that appear to be in the process of healing, but not likely caused by the Thrinaxodon).
While it is most likely the Thrinaxodon was in a state of aestivation or torpor (like a very deep sleep - think hibernation) and therefore couldn't evict its new amphibious resident; I think this fossil really hit a chord with some people. It's never a good idea to humanize animal behaviour, but I think we all wish that this was a case of two animals facing a catastrophic extinction event and deciding it was best to ride it out in the safety and warmth that comes in numbers. At least until the rains came.
Unfortunately it would seem it did, and these two were buried in a flood and died. Kept hidden in the earth for 250 million years until we came along and found their short story.

Silly Game Time: If you were to be the patron deity of something (the way the Muses are goddesses of different artforms, Tlaloc is a rain god, Amaterasu is a sun goddess, and Anansi is a god of stories and trickery), what would you choose? It can be as broad or as specific as you like.
This is a hard one because I'm convinced I'd be an awful god OR be a good one although very problematic (like, meddling too much).
BUT- If I had to choose on this precise moment, I'd like to be a deity for extinct critters (and by extension, paleontology). It just gets me really sentimental thinking about prehistoric animals, how they died million of years ago, and million years later, we are able to find them and try to discover their stories and act with a fascination about them or even be moved by what they went through.
They're the reason why things are the ways they're right now, our existence is in debt of them, it's as sad as it's beautiful.
#I'm feeling particularly sentimental about fossils today lol#Also fun fact since you mentioned Tlaloc!#SOME mexican gods were also very meddling on the mortal's business#I don't mean this as greek gods like Mr. Zeus and his “hole is hole”#I mean it more like... our homie Tlaloc watching a whole ass telenovella and going “NOOOOOOOOOO? THEY CAN'T END LIKE THAT!”#“I want a happy ending for my ship!” [turns dead lovers into something funky like flowers so they can always be together]#Also... His wife Xochiquetzal? Great goddess.#She was so pro-homosexual romance#There's also the whole story of chocolate#Quetzalcoatl Tlaloc and Xochiquetzal were like “This is great we should share it with the humans”#And the other gods didn't particularly want that but they went with it anyhow#So at least there's that#Maybe if I were a deity the other deities would go “whatever” because they already had to deal with these 3 and their shenanigans

ppl romanticize reading poems like silently drinking hot tea, sitting under a blanket by the fireplace like in a period drama etc. when it actually feels like this
#poetry#ive had this poem taped on my wall since the first time i read it#it just hits something in me that i cant describe#my first poetry prof had us read and analyse it line by line as a class - one line per person - to get a feel for the analysis#mine was the last one. no name but amber archers cinnamon horses and birds#it circles like the minoan script back to the heart#from the more abstract that you can picture but may not have ever seen yourself in your life#(amber here being the fossilized tree sap)#down to the every day beauty. something everyone encounters nearly every day and have for thousands of years - the birds#also. note. Michiko is the name of jacks lover who died a few years earlier#he wrote a couple poems about her death all of which hit like a fucking sledgehammer

as a huge lover of birds, 90% of the concern against wind turbines being used for energy is literally just pro fossil fuel propaganda. birds ARE at a risk however there is a lot of strategies even as simple as painting one of the blades that reduces a lot of accidental deaths. additionally renewable energy sources will do more in favor of the environment that would positively impact birds (and all of us). one study found over one million bird deaths from wind turbines. while that is a shockingly high number and we should work to drastically shrink it, at least 1.3 billion birds die to outdoor cats on a yearly basis. it was never about caring about birds
